Five different types of drilling systems were developed under the flexible drill program that was initiated by the Federal Bureau of Mines to protect roof bolter operators. The systems were designed for underground coal mines with seams as low as 30 inches, and with roof bolts longer than the height of the seam opening. Four of the developed systems were true flexible drills; the fifth was a remote-controlled, automatic rod changer concept. Only two of the five firms successfully completed testing requirements under the original contracts: BendixCorp.,4 with a true-flex drill; and Ingersoll-Rand Research, Inc., with the rod changer concept. The Bendix drill was rated best, and the Ingersoll-Rand drill was rated second. Because of the closeness of the ratings and the vast differences in the two development concepts, both systems had sufficient potential to justify further development funding for design updating and testing. Also, both systems warranted consideration for inclusion into other ongoing development projects under both safety and energy directed programs.

The results presented in this report deal with the elimination of explosion hazards of ether-oxygen mixtures by the addition of helium. The method is based upon the fact that every combustible gas, vapor, or dust will not burn or explode when the oxygen content of the mixture is reduced below certain definite values. These critical oxygen values are usually different for each combustible, varying with the percentage of the combustible present in the mixture and also with the inert gaseous material used to reduce the oxygen content of the mixture.

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines Studied 25,340 acres of the 28,960-acre Twelve Mile Creek Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-162) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Malheur County, OR, about 30 miles northwest of McDermitt, NV. The area is underlain by thick sequences of rhyolite to with lesser amounts of andesite and basalt flows. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed pertinent literature, mining records, and examined the study area for possible mineral resources in geologically favorable sites. There are no organized mining districts and no record of past or current mining activity. Based on sample results, published literature and field observations, there are no identified mineral resources.

There are a number of methods available for the determination of the fracture toughness of rock. Some of the most recognised methods include the hollow pressured cylinder, the short-rod, the chevron - edge-notched round bar in bending and the disc-shaped compact specimen. Most of these tests are difficult and expensive to conduct. In this paper the simple Brazilian testing of discs for tensile strength has been used to determine their fracture toughness. Tests were conducted on six different rock types and the values of the fracture toughness obtained for each type are in close agreement with the results of the well recognised the chevron edged types. Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The region includes the Deveci siderite/goethite deposit and the Hasancelebi, Karakuz and Kuluncak magnetite/goethite deposits; Deveci is the only mine in operation. The area consists of a serpentine-gabbro complex overlain by a volcano-sedimentary sequence hosting the iron ores. At least three generations of hydrothermal alteration have affected all rock types except the latest trachytic dykes. The Deveci deposits occur in a pyroclastic volcano-sedimentary sequence with shales and carbonates equivalent to the main mafic sequence, whereas the other three deposits formed contemporaneously with the intrusion of trachytic dykes. The deposits are of the volcanic-exhalative type, with syngenetic siderite in pillow lavas or stratiform layers the primary and main Fe-bearing mineral. In the west hydrothermal alteration has replaced siderite in pillow lavas with magnetite or has remobilised sideritic iron into magnetite veins

Over 206 million tons of hard coal were mined in South African collieries in 1996. Some 132.5 millions tons came from underground operations and approximately 120 million tons came from bord-and-pillar workings resulting in between 100 000 and 150 000pillars being formed. Coal pillar design remains a significant feature of South African mining. This paper reviews South African coal pillar design procedures in the light of 90 pillar collapses that have occurred since 1904. It shows that, while the current pillar strength formula is still valid within the original empirical range of Salamon1,cognisance must be taken of local conditions. Current South African coal pillar research is attempting to account for the variations in local conditions with the emphasis on the effect of discontinuities and pillar deterioration. It is suggested that a more holistic approach to pillar design be adopted to include a design methodology that examines the stability of the roof, pillar and floor of the underground workings. Using this approach, deviations from the empirical database used by Salamon and Munro will be incorporated into the design methodology resulting in more stable underground workings.

This paper describes the tower foundation design and construction experience for the 345kV Youngheung marine transmission line, which has been in commercial operation in Korea since July, 2004. This transmission line was designed and constructed to meet the rapidly increasing power demands of metropolitan areas and supply stable, bulk electric power from the Yonghung thermal power plant into metropolitan areas. This transmission line passes over the west sea, Lake Sihwa and over land. In order to successfully complete this project, and to safely support the tower during severe maritime conditions, several types of tower foundation such as Pad and Chimney foundation, Pier (Cylindrical) foundation, R.C.D foundation, Jacket pile foundation and Steel pipe pile + concrete mat foundation were developed and used. As the world?s first and longest marine transmission line, the 345kV Yonghung marine transmission line operates successfully, thanks to several high-tech civil engineering technologies and KEPCO?s accumulated experience.

Investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of methods of upgrading tar obtained by low-temperature carbonization of lignite showed that ß,ß?-oxydipropionitrile, ß,ß?-iminodipropionitrile, and ß,ß'-thiodipropionitrile were effective solvents for extracting aromatics (aromatic hydrocarbons plus polar compounds) from coal-tar neutral distillate fractions. Batch extraction showed that these solvents extracted approximately the same percentage of aromatics from various neutral oil fractions boiling between approximately 170° and 350° C. In continuous countercurrent extractions using oxydipropionitrile and iminodipropionitrile, approximately 30 to 35 vol.-pct, and 65 to 70 vol.-pct, of the aromatics in 170° to 350° C. neutral distillate oil were extracted at room temperature when solvent-to-oil ratios were 2:1 and 12:1, respectively. As the concentration of aromatics in the neutral distillate oil fraction decreased, the capacities and, to some extent, the selectivities of these solvents for the remaining aromatics decreased. Aromatics were isolated from the extracts and the solvents recovered by washing the extract fractions with a low-boiling paraffinic hydrocarbon such as heptane, using hydrocarbon-to-extract ratios of at least 2:1. The heptane wash removed most of the aromatics but only part of the polar compounds (compounds containing oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen) from the extracts. The recovered oxydipropionitrile and iminodipropionitrile, containing polar compounds, were effective in extracting aromatics from neutral distillate oils. The contaminated solvents showed essentially the same capacities and selectivities as the pure solvents.

The objective of the draw strategy in a caving mine is to maximise economic return by minimising waste dilution3 and maximising ore recovery4. The draw strategy must also include suitable controls for air blast and mud rush hazards and is highly constrained until continuous cave propagation has been achieved. This paper details a three-year project at the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), which used cave flow simulation software to develop a draw strategy that increased the mine value by 32 per cent.Dilution and ore loss can be significant in sublevel cave (SLC) operations and result in poor recovery and considerable economic losses. To minimise dilution and ore loss, cellular automata software was used to simulate cave flow over the mine life. The optimisation project required mining footprints for various cut-off grades to be developed. Draw strategies for each mine footprint were then generated using a range of shut-off grades. Economic assessment of each scenario was then conducted to determine the mine footprint and corresponding draw strategy that generated the highest NPV (net present value). The iterative simulation process was improved by developing automated software functions in the flow modelling software to reduce time taken to generate and assess life-of-mine (LOM) draw strategy scenarios.In addition to improving the NPV of the mine, the optimisation project also enabled a decrease in the mine cut-off grade which increased the ore reserve and extended the mine life. Overall, an iterative process of mine planning, cave simulation, economic evaluation and geotechnical analysis was used to significantly increase the economic return of the SLC whilst ensuring caving risks were controlled to an acceptable level.CITATION:Campbell, A D and Power, G R, 2016. Red Dome Mine was a highly complex gold copper operation developed over a number of phases between mid-1986 to October 1997. With only three years of production ahead at any time, a proactive practical approach to mine closure was necessary. In 1989 the Domains Concept to life-of-mine planning and mine closure was created as a response to the proposed changes to legislation.The Domains Concept, a relatively simple idea developed to integrate mine closure during production at Red Dome, has been broadly adopted by both government agencies and industry in the intervening 20 year period. Over time the author has observed that the concept has been poorly applied, misunderstood and in some cases even misrepresented. As a consequence, the potential opportunities from applying the concept, including the optimisation and minimisation of life-of-mine costs, mitigation of long-term financial liability exposures and building credibility with the general community, have been missed.This paper examines the many benefits, advantages, applications and perceived barriers to developing and integrating a fully costed life-of-mine plan. Integrating the Domains Concept early in the project, within the operational budgeting, allows the production of a meaningful and useful document, representative of a whole life-of-mine, cradle to grave, with measurable rehabilitation and closure outcomes when the concept is used to full effect.The Domains Concept serves to optimise cost-effective, whole of mine, life cycle planning which provides beneficial outcomes for the community, significantly mitigates legacy issues and contributes to the attainment of compliance and sustainability principle objectives.CITATION:McCarthy, B E, 2014. Photogrammetry-based techniques supported by traditional mapping tools are more frequently used for open pit geotechnical mapping. It fundamentally involves the collection of geological, structural and rock mass data from pit batters when safe to do so. These are essential components for refining and implementing continuous improvements to geotechnical models. The geotechnical model is used to review bench performance, optimise geotechnical design parameters, interpretation and analysis of pit slope stability. This paper is a case study of implementing different pit mapping methods at Mount Carlton gold mine, North Queensland. It critically reviews the tools required, including the Brunton compass, mobile application Clino, geotechnical data mapping software CloudCompare (2015) and Sirovision software. The review compares the image precision, structural measurements and data analysis. The review also underlines mine site management philosophy for safe geotechnical data collection to identify in-pit geotechnical hazards and the mitigation of potential slope instability. Sirovision is a remote sensing system for site geology mapping and interpreting geotechnical characteristics of exposed mining faces. The system utilises off-the-shelf digital SLR cameras to capture stereo photographs of the rock face and uses the latest image processing technology to generate accurate 3D models. These 3D models are digitally analysed using computational geometry to extract unbiased and accurate geological and geotechnical data. CloudCompare processes high accuracy 3D dense cloud rock surfaces reconstructed with photogrammetry software to extract the geological planes using the FACET or Compass plugins. The major discontinuity sets can be observed and the orientation (dip/dip direction) obtained from the algorithm is accurate and reliable for geotechnical assessment, including kinematic and rock slope stability analysis.

A new method for the design of longwall pillars, called "Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability" (ALPS), is described. The method is the final result of a research program that included two major field studies, extensive reanalysis of data from other in situ measurements, and detailed evaluations of available pillar design methods. The key problem addressed by ALPS is estimation of the abutment loads applied to longwall pillars. Based on underground stress measurements made in mines in three states, equations for predicting the magnitude, distribution, and time-of-arrival of abutment loads are proposed. Stress measurements are also used to evaluate empirical pillar strength formulas for use in longwall pillar design. ALPS has been verified by application to case histories from several mining areas, and examples taken from the Pittsburgh and the Blue Creek seams are presented. Step-by-step guidelines for using this design method are also given.

"Permanent magnets have been applied extensively to several electronic products such as printers, TV sets, microphones, microcomputers and headphones, presently manufactured in large scale by industrial economies. Sm-Co alloys represent about 20% of the world market for permanent magnets and their industrial processors generate 20-30% of magnetic scraps which can be recycled. This paper discusses a process route to recycle SmCo5 using acid treatment, solvent extraction of Sm and electrowinning of Co. The results confirm the feasibility of the alternative proposed. Basic operational variables are suggested as guidelines to design a plant for recycling magnetic scraps.The use of hydrometallurgical processes to recycle scraps from the industry of permanent magnets has been suggested in some recent papers related to recycling of metallic alloys [ 1 ]. These research efforts might be understood as a worldwide tendency towards the development of self sustainable metallurgical processes which mean the reduction of environmental impacts.CETEM -Center for Mineral Technology leads in Brazil several research programs concerning recycling and treatment of industrial residues. The work on samarium purification and concentration by solvent extraction, producing also a solution of cobalt sulfate as partially reported here is one of these programs. On the basis of laboratory test results a comparison of various parameters (unconfined compressive strength, CERCHAR and LCPC abrasivity indexes, mineralogy) is presented and discussed in order to outline certain correlations between them. Samples cover a wide range of lithological types coming from various sites of tunnels. What separates the support of mining openings from the support of similar civil engineering structures is the fact that mine openings have to survive large deformations as a result of changing stress conditions induced by progressive mining. Steel fibres impart to concrete and shotcrete a high degree of ductility which not only allows the shotcrete and concrete linings to absorb important rock movements but also to increase its bearing capacity by a redistribution of the loads. A range of applications will be discussed technically and economically.

In the United States the performance characteristics of permissible explosives are controlled by routine tests, which include firing the explosive into a gallery filled with a methane-air mixture. These tests are made by the staff-of the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines and are similar, in general, to those employed in other countries. This control has helped to reduce the frequency of accidents involving the ignition of firedamp by explosives but has not clarified the basic causes of the ignition. To advance this control and to minimize potential hazards further, this fundamental knowledge is needed. Some of the results of recent research on the causes of the ignition are described herein. NATURE OF THE PROBLEM When an explosive ignites firedamp in the gallery tests, the source of the ignition must be one or more of the emissions from the steel borehole. It has been accepted generally that these emissions are (1) particles, (2) the shock wave, and (3) hot gases and flames. Photographs show that the shock wave emerges from the borehole first, followed closely by hot gases. At first the velocities of these are high and approximately equal, but the velocity of the gases decreases more rapidly than that of the shock wave, and by the time the reactions causing the flame are complete the shock wave travels in an otherwise undisturbed medium. The particles are originally enveloped in the hot gases but some soon begin to break through and eventually out-distance the shock wave. The approximate geometry of these emissions about 1 millisecond after the shot is fired is illustrated in figure

An independent technical audit by a consultant is part of the accountability process of publicly owned or publicly quoted companies when raising finance through share issues or loans or the sale of equity, and of banks or development funds when granting loans. Africa is undergoing a renaissance in investment in its mining industry. It is forecast that capital investment, in major mining projects in Africa, will be over US$ 4.4 billion, in the next few years. Most, if not all, of the capital to be raised will require an independent technical audit. The aim of this paper is to assist the management of mining companies seeking finance in appreciating the role of such technical audits. The reasons for such audits, especially to attract international investment, are listed. The role of the audit is explained in assessing the underlying robustness of the company as ?a going concern? and the viability of any ?expansion plans?. Its use is emphasised in establishing the underlying value of the company based on the mine life as supported by the mineral reserves. The independent consultant role is stressed as a representative of the parties in a finance deal who cannot, in practice, carry out their own detailed and specialized technical due diligence. The various components of a typical audit are examined with examples of critical matters which may require resolution. The definitions, which are used commonly in audits, in respect of competence and reserves and resources, as stated by various regulatory bodies, are compared.
