"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Recent exploration efforts in Eastern Interior, Alaska have discovered significant ca 72 Ma Au-Cu-Ag sulfide-amphibole skarn mineralisation within metamorphic rocks of the Yukon Tanana Terrane, 20 km SE of Tok, Alaska. Contango ORE, Inc’s 1.1 Moz Au-equivalent Peak deposit skarn discovery is hosted by an argillaceous marble layer in quartzite and micaceous quartz schist. This skarn mineralisation is both younger and much more Cu-rich than the typical ca 90 Ma Au intrusive-related gold deposits in the Tintina Gold Belt (eg Ft Knox and Pogo). Silicates at the Peak skarn are predominantly high Cl-, randomly oriented, Fe-rich amphibole, lesser chlorite and minor (<1 per cent) residual clinopyroxene (Hd80–90). Amphibole is ferroedenite to hastingsite and contains up to 4.2 wt per cent Cl-. Pb-Zn-Sb veins are most distal and cut schist wall rocks and amphibole skarn. The predominant sulfide mineral is pyrrhotite, with subordinate arsenopyrite and lesser chalcopyrite, native gold, minor pyrargyrite (Ag3SbS3), trace Jonassonite (AuBi5S4) and maldonite (Au2Bi). Native bismuth, galena, hedlyite (Bi7Te3) and Joseite-A (Bi4TeS2) are also present.Unmineralised garnet (Ad38–43) + pyroxene (Hd60–63) and pyroxene-rich (Hd76–80) skarn occurs in different fault blocks from the Peak skarn and represent proximal skarn related to different intrusive centres. Amphibolites in the region are true metabasites, display metamorphic fabrics and lack the high Fe-Cl compositions of the amphiboles in mineralised skarn. Residual clinopyroxene in the Peak skarn is rare, and most of the hornblende is coarse radial splays that shows no evidence for replacement of pyroxene. Consequently, we propose that the sulfides and hornblende were mostly direct replacements of argillaceous marble and not formed by retrograde alteration of pyroxene-rich skarn. The high-Cl amphiboles indicate that the fluids were Cl-rich and presumably carried Cu via Cl complexing, unlike the Cl-poor fluids associated with ca 90 Ma Cu-poor deposits of the region.CITATION:Illig, P and Newberry, R, 2015. As this is the first occasion I have had, and probably will be the only opportunity I shall have, of addressing such a large gathering of members and of student members of the Institute, I desire to- express my very deep appreciation of the honour 'you have paid me in electing me to the office of President for the current year. I realise also that such selection is a tribute to the Company which controls operations here, the centre selected for the annual meeting, but nevertheless there is afforded to the recipient a great deal of pride and of pleasure to hold the highest office in what is, in my opinion, undoubtedly the most important engineering society in Australasia.The past year has witnessed an unprecedented and unparalleled event in the history of the British Empire, and I think that we must all feel a wonderful sense of proud patriotism; the whole world was forced to admire the public calm and the dignity which accompanied the change in our Sovereign Ruler, and great tribute is due to the statesmanship of the Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin. At this time, we should, I think, place on record our prayer, in common with all his people, that His Majesty, King George the Sixth, may enjoy a long and prosperous reign.The meeting at Port Pirie recalls one who did so much for the advancement of mining and metallurgy, especially in Australia. I refer to the late Mr. Delprat, who, as General Manager of The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, had under his control for many years the smeltery in this centre. Water availability is essential for mining and minerals processing. To provide government and industry with recent data for water use planning and management, the Bureau of Mines canvassed a number of U.S. producers of nonfuel minerals to determine their water use in 1984. Data were analyzed and compared with previously published data in order to examine historical trends in water utilization in the nonfuel minerals industry and to estimate water requirements in the year 2000. Total water use in the domestic nonfuel minerals industry during 1984 was estimated at 2,267 billion gal, of which 571 billion gal was new water and 1,696 billion gal recirculated water. The largest users of water were the phosphate rock, iron ore, copper, sand and gravel, and crushed stone industries, together accounting for almost 90% of total used. More than one-half of all water was used in Florida, Michigan, and Minnesota. In the year 2000, total water use will amount to an estimated 2,679 billion gal, of which 810 billion gal will be new water and 1,869 billion gal recirculated water. The established crown pillar extraction method at Gold Fields Australia Ltd.’s Crusader Mine, leads to the significant dilution and poor recovery of ore due to caving of the overlying loose rockfill. The application of selectively injecting specifically developed ‘FB200’ ettringite (calcium sulphoaluminate hydrate) type cement grout into loose rockfill to form a stabilised rockfill material, enables an artificial crown pillar to stabilise the surrounding rock mass and prevent caving of the overlying loose rockfill during crown pillar extraction. Investigation of the geomechanical criteria for crown pillar extraction beneath stabilised rockfill has enabled the safe and efficient extraction of two crown pillars at the Crusader Mine. La méthode actuelle d'extraction des piliers horizontaux à la mine Crusader dont la propriétaire est le Goldfields Australia Ltd amène à une dilution sensible du minerai, à cause de l'effondrement du remblai peu compacté qui se trouve au-dessus. This paper addresses the impact of the variable speed drive on the particle size distribution in the product of a fully autogenous UG2 grinding circuit. It further discusses the impact of a varying particle size distribution in the product of the mill on the downstream classification and milling circuits. An industrial case study was used and data is presented to illustrate the techniques applied to identify the root cause of the shift in operational efficiency. The results achieved from both the investigation into the shift in plant efficiency and the sub-sequent corrective action taken illustrate that the root-cause methodology used in advance control can be effectively applied on production sites to both detect the shift and identify probable root-causes. The industrial example used confirms that the variable speed drive in a UG2 autogenous milling operation is a critical control parameter to ensure that the plant operates to design specifications.

Advantages: eliminates impact noise and vibrations, high section modulus if required, vertical load bearing capacity; corrosion resistant, easy to apply facing for use as a permanent wall, adapts to complex wall layouts, would allow top- down construction, very high uplift resistance. c. Disadvantages: spoil disposal, not water tight, cannot penetrate rock and most obstructions, soil can erode between the piles if surface water and ground water are not controlled, hard to install reinforcing beams over 409 long; subject to high negative skin friction loads, high grout takes in rubble and organic soils. e. Relative cost to other systems: 30% to 50% more expensive than driven soldier piles and lagging except when surcharge loads are involved, or the pile cannot be driven due to noise and vibrations. About the same cost as a sheet pile system. Very competitive if high vertical load must be supported by the wall.

Both client and end user are quite rightly influenced by their own experiences. The question is who is right, the client and his consultant, the supplier or perhaps a combination of these. This paper looks at some of the fundamental variances that often occur in the approach to the mechanical design of drum hoists, based on our experiences of recent years. The emergence of new steel grades is largely driven by the need to produce high quality steel at a competitive price. The principal aims are to attain ultra-high purity, (especially low interstitial elements) and ultra-cleanliness (by the control of the inclusion content and size). Whereas the steel used to build the Titanic contained 650 ppm sulphur, resulting in MnS stringer-inclusions 25 mm in length, modern quality requirements for arctic pipelines would only allow 10 ppm of sulphur and inclusions in ball-bearing steels must be smaller than 5µm. Most developments are aimed at hot-metal treatment before refining and ladle treatment after decarburisation. Because ferroalloys are added during or after the refining step, it is the secondary (ladle) refining production technologies that are of specific interest to the ferroalloy producer. Through ladle treatment, hydrogen and nitrogen contents are reduced, ultra-low levels of solute impurities are attained and the shapes as well as the composition of inclusions are modified. Steelmakers are concerned about the cost effectiveness of the use of ferroalloys such as consistent product analysis and delivery, improved financing arrangements and technical support. Minimal variation in product sizing is vital because it impacts on handling problems and because particle size determines the rate of particle dissolution. The required ferroalloy product quality depends on the specific use but in general sulphur, phosphorous and nitrogen contents are of concern. Apart from the presence of trace and impurity elements, ferroalloys also contain inclusions. For example, ferromanganese may contain MnO-MnS-SiO2 inclusions while high-carbon ferro-chrome may contain different kinds of Cr-Mn-spinels. The presence of these impurities and inclusions has a significant impact on steel production techniques and cost and hence, on the selection and use of ferroalloys. The interrelationship between ferroalloy quality and steel production technology is plant and product specific and hence, effective communication between ferroalloy suppliers and steel producers is essential.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority is responsible for slopes along the Kaministiquia River, one of the largest tributaries to Lake Superior in Canada. After arresting toe erosion for a mile of riverbank, the remainder of the slope required stabilization to stop further crest regression and to protect the houses, street and services at the top. Stabilization of the 100 ft. high slope was tendered as design-build with a target safety factor of 1.3 and a design life of 75 years. The successful bid was a system of 1.4 inch diameter soil nails up to 40 feet long, installed perpendicular to the slope on a 3 to 5 foot grid. The conventional shotcrete facing was replaced with a ?green? biotechnical facing and special transverse plate heads on the nails. The key to keeping costs low proved to be installation with light equipment working on the slope, and driving the nails without drilling or grouting. Rather than tension, the design was based on bending in the nails, similar to a laterally loaded flexible pile. The paper describes the design and installation of this innovative system. The design is discussed in terms of soil properties, nail resistance as it varies with depth, failure modes, corrosion protection, root design and nail head design. Construction challenges are discussed. The system is compared to an adjacent anchored soldier pile wall built along the same slope 20 years ago. Post construction monitoring results confirm predicted performance.

The area, A, under a gamma-ray log that passes through a horizontal bed given by: A = gl/k. Here is the equivalent concentration of U3O8 in the body, l the thickness of the body, and k the calibration factor or sensitivityof the logger. The area is independent of the logging speed or logger time constant.This relationship, together with the first moment about the maximum of the log and its value there suflicient to determine the thickness, position of the centre of the bed from the log maximum and the concentration of U3O8.Numerical results obtained from artificial and field data show that the computed results arc as good as those obtained by methods such as the inverse filter technique and the iterative method. The present method yields results that arc easier to feed into an ore reserve data base.

Fe-Ni alloys can be used as raw material in making stainless steel. Laterite nickel ore is one of mineral resources for producing nickel alloys. In this work, the laterite ore after dehydration at 800 °C and the anthracite as reducing agent were mixed for pre-reduction at 900 °C, and then reduced to form Fe-Ni alloys at 1550-1620 °C through carbon-thermal reduction process. A high Ni-content alloy component in the metallurgical mixture can be formed through pre-reduction. Better separation of the resulting metals from the slag is found with lower Ni-content alloys produced or higher temperatures during reduction. An effective processing of Fe-Ni alloys needs further understanding of the process fundamentals and optimizing of the process parameters.

There seems nothing wrong with this approach at face value. Companies need to compete and be profitable if they are to remain in business. Failure will in the end mean bankruptcy, and the loss of jobs. However, if one interrogates the precise practices, and their implications for all concerned?not just shareholders and employers, but workers, communities, the environment, future generations, the national economy?then the picture can change dramatically. ?Best practice? for whom?

The rapid increase of P2O5 use for food, biofuels, and LiFePO4 batteries etc. accelerates the depletion rate of phosphate reserves. In the phosphate industry, a significant amount of ultrafine phosphate has been discarded as slime tailing due to processing difficulties. The major problems associated with ultrafine particle flotation are low probability of bubble-particle collision and adhesion, and high probability of unwanted gangue particles entrainment. This paper investigates the enhanced ultrafine phosphate particle flotation probability by Eriez’ CavTube generated fine/ ultrafine bubbles and the improved flotation selectivity by wash water etc. Ultrafine phosphates with various gangue minerals of quartz/muscovite, calcite/dolomite, and iron/ silica were studied. Microscopic observations show that the entrained ultrafine gangue minerals can be minimized by using wash water in column flotation. A three-factor threelevel central composite experimental design was conducted for ultrafine phosphate flotation. For comparison, both benchtop mechanical cell and laboratory column flotation tests were performed at their optimal respective flotation conditions. Using Eriez CavTube column flotation technology for Industries Chimiques du Senegal (ICS) ultrafine slime tailings, a concentrate grade of 36.0% P2O5, was achieved at 89.4% P2O5 recovery. Improved flotation performance was achieved using column flotation as compared to benchtop mechanical cell flotation. The benefits of Eriez’ column flotation technology realized from this study include the high P2O5 grade and recovery.

Modelling and simulation are important aspects of flotation research, which may assist in the design of new circuits and the optimisation of existing ones. Flotation research in the AMIRA P9 project has developed a methodology for flotation plant modelling based on determination of cell (pulp) characteristics. froth characteristics, and ore floatability (using floatability components). The implementation of this methodology requires the determination of ore floatability, to which end a small flotation pilot plant known as the Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR) has been designed and then built and kindly made available to the AMIRA P9 project by Baker Process. The FCTR has a 2 tph capacity and consists of six 130 litre rougher/scavenger cells and six 50 litre cleaner/recleaner cells. The Mintek FloatStar pulp level control system is used to control the pulp level in all cells. A number of experimental procedures have been developed for using the FCTR to obtain the data required for the P9 flotation models. These procedures include how to determine the floatability parameters, Pi and mi, the bubble surface area flux, Sb, the mean residence of the pulp in the cell, t, water recovery. Rw, froth zone recovery, Rf, and the degree of entrainment, ENT. The flexibility of the FCTR allows it to be used in numerous flotation studies such as stream characterisation, reagent testing, grinding experiments, power studies, oxidation studies, and scale-up and simulation studies. This paper will describe the design and operation of the FCTR and the procedures that will be used to obtain data from the rig for modelling purposes.

One of the best kept technology secrets in U.S coalmining history involved a robust coal geophysics program used by a local coal company to detect and map various geologic anomalies and man-made structures ahead of mining for nearly 15 years. Several original mine plans were changed as a result of findings from two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) seismic data. They indicated the presence of geologic anomalies in reserve areas that could adversely impact future mine development and longwall production. By combining the surface seismic and exploratory drilling methods, the coal company learned how to properly leverage its risk by gathering a lot of useful subsurface information before making major commitments.

Commencing in 1922, each year a lecture has been presented to the Institute of Metals Division at this February meeting. The range of subjects has been very- broad. Some speakers have dealt with the most advanced work in the very heart of the science of physical metallurgy. Others have stimulated our imaginations by discussing the most recent progress in related fields of science. Others have told us of the latest art, which is at any moment of greater practical importance than the latest science, of metals. I feel that this broad precedent in the choice of subjects will justify my choosing to talk about some of the prosaic details of how, during the last generation, industry has effectively organized research to accelerate progress in our own and all other fields of science and related art. A number of years ago I visited one of this country's well-known research laboratories and had the pleasure of chatting for a few minutes with its equally well-known director. Being particularly interested at the time in the organization problems connected with industrial research, I broached that subject. My host stated in effect that he didn't believe in organized research. He was, of course, resorting to a rhetorical hyperbole. to pain: out the danger of overorganization which can so easily drift into regimentation and destroy individual initiative. Actually nearly all of us, much as we cherish our personal freedom of action, believe in organization because the history of progress in every field of human activity has been a history of men learning to work together, to cooperate, to create an efficient division of labor. We use organization to achieve this coordination. At the same time our form of organization must not stifle individual initiative or it will prove a deterrent rather than an aid to accomplishment. Research, too, must be organized for greatest achievement but especial skill and care are perhaps needed to avoid stifling the initiative of the individual workers. I have, of course, followed with keen interest and much benefit the vast amount . that has been said and written on this subject in the past twenty years but I still find new stimulation in discussions with my good friends working in this field. It is my hope that this discussion may serve a like purpose. It would be ungracious not to make due acknowledgment to the many able contributors to this particular phase of human progress, but their very number and the great volume of their writing makes it impossible to trace to any one individual a particular significant and valuable idea. I shall content myself therefore with this general acknowledgment and with acknowledgment of the specific debt that every research man owes to those who have so ably kept before the public, and in particular before industrial executives, the place of research in the modern scheme of things' Because of the legitimate publicity thus given to research, the day is past when any
