This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds of Clay, Gilmer, and Lewis Counties, W. Va. In 1966, almost 1.3 million tons of coal was mined in these counties, of which more than one-half was from the Pittsburgh coalbed. Washability analyses were made of 16 coalbed samples. Of these, only 11 samples could be upgraded to metallurgical quality. For steam or power generation five of the coals were of low sulfur content as received. The remaining samples were generally of medium sulfur content even after upgrading.

Data Interchange for Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (DIGGS) is a data transfer standard that is gaining widespread acceptance in the geotechnical and geoenvironmental communities. Originally developed using funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to efficiently capture data related to geotechnical boring logs, cone penetration test (CPT) soundings, and lab testing results, the data transfer protocol is rapidly gaining traction. It has been shown to have beneficial impacts in other allied areas where disparate parties (i.e., consultants, contractors, vendors, etc.) routinely publish/submit data as part of project deliverables. The historic problem is that many of these submissions use paper copies (i.e., .pdf images) to transmit valuable data for the project… data that may extend beyond the “technical” aspects of the project (e.g., equipment operating conditions, construction production rates, project costs, etc.). These data could be used by multiple parties to assess project performance and safety, as well as to track productivity, etc. Currently, in the limited situations when actual data are compiled and transmitted, the data often are submitted as an author-specific (and often proprietary) software application and must then be re-entered into other software applications (e.g., analysis software, database, etc.) for use beyond simple data collection. An initiative undertaken by the Geo-Institute (G-I) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) focuses on exploiting the full potential of DIGGS to geoprofessionals both within and outside of the transportation community. The deep foundations industry represents one community that could benefit significantly from using DIGGS. Data of interest to DFI members include production records, quality assurance information (e.g., verticality and alignment, concrete strength), and, importantly, load test results. When adopting DIGGS, users need not modify how they capture data, but rather will use DIGGS as a vehicle to transfer data to other applications in a standard format where it can be shared, used, stored, and retrieved. This paper and associated presentation will describe DIGGS and demonstrate how DIGGS can be used effectively within the deep foundations community.

Determination of the nonlinear behavior of multivariate dynamic systems often presents a challenging and demanding task. Therefore, complex geomechanics systems are an ideal area for the application of intelligent methods. Often the physical problem is controlled by nonlinear equations, conveying to the use of neural networks. Hudson, (1992a), aiming at efficient engineering modelling and design, introduced and developed Rock Engineering Systems (RES) approach, through the implementation of generic interaction matrix GIM. This approach has been used for a wide variety of rock engineering and other problems, resulting in many case studies available, which illustrate the application of RES to rock engineering problems. Considering the spectrum of the coding methods for the Generic Interaction Matrix, we suggest an objective coding approach. Among the five proposed coding GIM methods, the coding method according to the slope of Pi and Pj relation is relatively accurate, but it might be difficult or impossible to establish or estimate the exact relation of Pi vs Pj for most of the variables involved within a rock engineering system. Self organising maps, are a special type of unsupervised artificial neural networks, which can learn from complex, multidimensional data, and transform them to visually decipherable clusters. The proposed, coding of the GIM, is performed through the combined use of scatter plots produced through, (SOM), and the coding according Pi vs Pj slope. Naghadehi et al., (2013) constructed a database of worldwide experience, in open-pit mine slope stability, the selection of the principal factors was based on Hudson (1992a) who proposed an ‘atlas’ of factors affecting the stability of rock slopes. Slope classification was performed according to status of stability. The rating of the GIM matrix was completed, coupling scatter matrix produced by SOM training, and Pi vs Pj slope plot. Results refer to the identification of clusters, according to status of stability within the original multivariate data set, and the rating of the principal factors according to the dominance and interaction intensity within the open pit mines RES.

Mining plants and infrastructure, and the decisions made by their designers, can have large impacts on their environmental and social context, commonly referred to as the site or plant footprint. They can also be the source of constructive contributions to sustainable development when designers are enabled via the information, systems and tools to incorporate sustainability in engineering processes. A facility’s footprint and the project’s contribution to sustainability – economic, environmental and social aspects – are now key considerations in regulatory approval processes and are the fundamental drivers of support, or opposition, from the project’s stakeholders.Historically, plant and infrastructure designers have not been well integrated with the environmental and social professionals who are engaged to pursue regulatory approvals. Despite this, many objectives central to technical and process engineering have in fact contributed positively to a facility’s footprint and indeed its contribution to sustainable development. Examples of these objectives include increasing process and energy efficiency, and minimising the quantities of waste requiring disposal. With the framework of sustainability, mining plant and infrastructure designers are indeed at the forefront of incorporating sustainability into resource industry projects and are central to the process of obtaining regulatory approvals and ongoing stakeholder support. The process of incorporation starts with a shared understanding of sustainability and sustainable development, and continues with project processes that facilitate information and knowledge exchange throughout the project life cycle.CITATION:Murphy, A, 2014. This paper aims to present the development of a 600mm U-Pile that was done in Gerdau’s Ouro Branco Heavy Section Mill in order to feed the local market with a product.The focus of this study is to show the developmental process the Mill went through until it was prepared for hot trials. All roll pass and guide designs were developed by our own team. Analytical tools like Finite Element Analysis and reduced scale lead trials will be shown and how these tools impacted on the development timeframe and accuracy of the final results on steel.

Municipal solid waste of incineration (MSWI) bottom ashes are recycled as aggregates in civil engineering. These heterogeneous materials are composed of crystalline and glassy solid phases which contain trace metals, presenting a potential risk to the environment. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) can provide quantitative chemical information, in particular the localisation of metals at trace level. Unstable glassy phases formed during incineration are present in relatively high proportions. Their analyses suggest a continuum between melilite-bearing glasses and dark glasses enriched in iron with abundant spinel aggregates. These primary glasses are enriched in zinc (~4500 ppm) but depleted in lead (~800 ppm) by comparison with the bulk chemical composition and reference materials. Heterogeneous cementing and encrusting admixtures on coarse grains are studied in a second step. SIMS imaging suggests a superposition of band zones including an intermediate layer enriched in iron oxyhydroxides and a superficial layer with calcium accumulation. A strong spatial association between lead and iron is systematically observed. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) supports these observations by demonstrating that lead co-precipitation within iron oxyhydroxides, or sorption on their surfaces, may be a main containment process in the cementing and encrusting admixtures, whereas lead speciation is globally more complex in MSWI bottom ash.

Spontaneous combustion is one of the most important safety issues in the global coal industry. It is considered to be a trigger for explosions in underground mines, especially for gassy mines. This thermal event is not easily detectable in the gob and sealed area. It is also a tough job to find the most likely hot point accurately. Admittedly, determination of the propensity for spontaneous combustion before mining activity should be a necessary step in the design of a mine and ventilation plan. However, due to the complexity of the chemical and physical properties of coal, spontaneous combustion has not been fully understood. According to a proximate analysis of coal, it is believed that sulfur and volatile matter in coal are the main intrinsic factors that cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal?s self-heating should be quantified. This study aims to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying a coal?s propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model?s ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture content in the coal ? three important factors affecting a coal?s self-heating process. Based on the law of energy conservation, heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built into the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature are calibrated with adiabatic testing data extracted from the literature for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation, respectively. From the modeling results, it is found that the higher the pyrite content the coal contains and the more moisture that condenses in an environment with high relative humidity and initial temperature, the higher the potential for spontaneous combustion.

SINCE the U. S. Geological Survey published the data on the Central Mining District collected by Lindgren and Graton1 and by Paige2 much new information has been obtained by development and mapping, but none of it had been published until recently when Kniffin3 published on Fierro, Lasky4 on the Ground Hog mine, Thorne5 on Santa Rita and Landon6 filed a thesis on the Fierro-Hanover-Santa Rita area at the Uni-versity of Chicago. During the years 1927-1930 much of the writer's time was spent in mapping the geology and ore deposits of this district, particularly in the area of the zinc deposits at Hanover. Some of the data collected are presented here. Previous publications have been freely drawn upon and additional data used that were generously supplied by L. M. Kniffin, Wilfred Wright and Gerald Ballmer. Thanks are due Augustus Locke, Samuel G. Lasky, Kniffin, Wright and Ballmer for suggestions and critical readings of the manuscript, and to the Empire Zinc Co. Introduction The Siscoe gold mine is the most easterly producer of gold from deposits lying in the belt of Keewatin and Timiskaniing rocks which extends east from Kirkland Lake, Ontario, and on through the Rouyn copper area. Unlike many of the deposits in this belt, those of Siscoe are contained almost entirely in a stock of much-altered granodiorite which intrudes Keewatin lavas. They are situated on an island of about one square mile in area, lying in lake De Montigny, Dubuisson township, 40 miles south of Amos, on the Transcontinental branch of the Canadian National railways, and 52 miles east, and slightly south, of Noranda. Geographically, the deposits are favour-ably situated with respect to transportation facilities, a through water-route being available from Amos, along the Harricana river and its lake expansions. The deposits consist of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins of the fissure-filled type and are of particular interest because of their geological structure and genesis. Furthermore, deposits of a similar type occur both in the Keewatin and in granodiorite bodies to the east, in Dubuisson, Bourlamaque, Pascalis, and Louvicourt townships, and it is hoped that the following discussion may be of some aid in the exploration work now being carried on throughout this general area.

New construction in metropolitan areas has direct impacts on immediate neighbors and abutters. While noise and dust are generally nuisance concerns, demolition, vibrations, excavation, and dewatering can cause structural damage to adjacent structures. Different cities, states, or jurisdictions have different regulations that dictate requirements, roles, or responsibilities for varying parties during construction. The authors will introduce and discuss risks of new construction adjacent to existing structures, and the legal framework in Illinois which requires the owner of the new construction project to provide adequate protections for adjacent existing structures. The authors, who are engineers and attorneys, will discuss technical and legal concerns, and will highlight the importance of early and frequent communication among project participants to manage risks, despite whether or not any local regulations exist to drive the process. RISKS IN ADJACENT CONSTRUCTION New construction in metropolitan areas inherently involves some combination of noise, dust, ground-borne vibrations, earth excavation, and subgrade dewatering. These issues have potential to directly and adversely affect abutters and their property. Noise and dust can be nuisance concerns, while vibrations, excavation, and dewatering can result in damage to abutters’ structures. Noise and dust are unlikely to lead to physical damage to abutters’ property, and can be controlled with limited work hours and good housekeeping practices. Vibrations and excavations, however, if not well understood, planned for, and mitigated, can result in serious damage to abutters’ structures. In turn, this damage introduces additional and often significant costs and schedule delays.

A recent report evaluating silica exposure levels in the metal/nonmetal mining industry noted that bag packaging and loading are some of the occupations at the greatest risk. In addition to dust problems, the bag-stacking process is labor intensive, making lost-time injuries common due to back fatigue and strains. During the bag-stacking process, a significant amount of dust can be generated, mainly from product on the outside of the bags and from dust escaping the bag valve upon impact of the bag on the pallet. In an effort to address dust-exposure and back-fatigue issues, Malvern Minerals Co., Hot Springs, Ark., made two major improvements to its ground silica stacking facility. First, the company purchased a semi-automated bag palletizing system (Figure 1). With this system, the bag stacker does not lift the bags, but slides them across a metal table. Small jets of air exit through perforations in the table top (similar to an air hockey game), allowing workers to more easily slide each bag into the proper position. After each layer of bags is completed, the table slides open, and the entire layer of bags is loaded onto an underlying pallet. The table then closes, readying it for another layer of bags. After the entire pallet is loaded, the unit delivers the pallet to a shrink wrap and forklift pick-up area. In addition to this semi-automated palletizing unit, Malvern Minerals purchased an Overhead Air Supply Island System (OASIS) to lower the bag stacker's dust exposure. The OASIS takes outside air, directs it through MEASURING RESPIRABLE DUST The bag stacker's respirable dust exposure was monitored using a RAM-1 instantaneous dust monitor to evaluate the impact of the various changes on the palletizing process and dust-control equipment. The bag stacker wore a vest that held the 10-mm Dorr-Oliver cyclone, which classifies the respirable portion of dust. Flexible tygon tubing was used to connect the cyclone to the RAM-1 dust unit, allowing the bag stacker to perform the palletizing process with minimal interference. The RAM-1 measures respirable dust concentrations by light scattering with a sensing chamber. This device closely simulates gravimetric measurements when calibrated for a specific dust. This instrument is ideal for comparative evaluations, as was the case in this study. Since the RAM-1 is not an MSHA-approved instru¬ment for dust compliance sampling, the dust concen¬trations listed in this article should be used as a com¬parative value of respirable dust concentration and not to determine actual dust concentrations from a com¬pliance standpoint.

To substantially reduce, if not eliminate, carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from ironmaking it is necessary to convert from blast furnace (BF) ironmaking using coking coal as the reductant to direct reduction (DR) ironmaking using hydrogen (H₂) and green electricity. Currently, almost all natural gas (NG) based direct reduced iron (DRI) production utilises iron oxide pellets in shaft furnaces, as opposed to fines in fluidised beds. Also, these pellets are ordinarily produced from high-grade magnetite concentrate, rather than hematite and goethite with typically higher gangue contents. The use of high-grade magnetite concentrate is driven by the preference to melt DRI in conventional electric arc furnaces (EAFs), thereby avoiding the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) for making crude steel (CS). However, in replacing BF with DR ironmaking it is not economically feasible to source enough high-grade magnetite to replace the lower grade hematite and goethite currently consumed. That is not to say that hematite and goethite, or even low-grade magnetite, cannot be used in DR ironmaking. However, their higher gangue content, resulting in higher slag production, requires that the EAF producing CS be replaced with a submerged arc furnace (SAF) that will produce pig iron (PI) for the BOF as does the BF. Here, critical issues to be addressed are, what are the technicalities in replacing high-grade magnetite concentrate with hematite and goethite and NG with H₂ in DRI pellet production and melting? This paper summarises certain relevant published information on DRI pellet research, test work and production together with relevant information on Pilbara ores. It attempts to illustrate the inter- relationship of composition and processing conditions on DRI pellet properties. It is intended to serve as a rudimentary guide to understanding the complexities of formulation, testing, evaluation, production and goethite and offer insight into this challenge.

"Particulate Copper Silicon carbide (Cu-SiCp) composites find application as wear and heat resistant materials in electrical sliding contacts such as in homopolar machines, railway overhead current collector systems where high electrical/thermal conductivity combined with good wear properties is required. However, challenges occur during machining due to the presence of hard reinforcement in the matrix. This may lead to high turnover of tool wear and poor surface finish. The adoption of near-net shape technology to produce such hard-to-machine metal matrix composites and subsequent finish machining with its attendant cost has reported limited success. This paper critically appraises the challenges and opportunities in the improvement of tribological characteristics of particulate Cu-SiC composites and identifies low cost reinforcement material that could be used to improve its tribological characteristics.IntroductionTribology consideration is increasingly becoming a decisive factor in the design and selection of materials for applications involving interacting surfaces in relative motion. The consideration is mainly on the combined effects of friction and lubrication on material's wear integrity and performance amongst other. Annual losses due to tribology in the US industries are estimated at between 1-2% of the Gross National Income [1], in Russia it is about 1-4% of the GDP [2]. Thus, the attributes of tribology has become imperative in modem machinery especially those applications involving sliding and rolling surfaces, and electrical contacts [3- 8].These are readily found in homopolar machines, internal combustion engines, aircraft engines, gears, cams, seals and railway overhead current collector systems [9-12]. In these systems, the dissipation of frictional heat arising from the interacting surfaces as quickly as possible imposes constraints on the choice of materials for such application to prevent softening, plastic and shear flow and the transfer of metal as wear debris onto the interacting surfaces. If these possibilities occur, system performance is compromised and premature failure may result. Materials for these systems are expected to possess high electrical and thermal conductivities, low coefficient of thermal expansion, good corrosion resistance and high melting point [3-8, 13]."

Ligas a base de zircônio são utilizadas na indústria nuclear devido à suas boas propriedades mecânicas, baixa absorção de nêutrons e boa resistência à corrosão. No entanto, durante a operação do reator, o hidrogênio é absorvido pela liga, resultando na formação de hidretos. Para aumentar o tempo de operação desses componentes é necessário o desenvolvimento de novas ligas que retardem ou diminuam esse efeito. Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a influência dos tratamentos termomecânicos no zircônio puro, através de testes que avaliem a corrosão, absorção e dessorção de hidrogênio nas condições laminada a frio e tratada termicamente. Análises de difração de raios-X indicam a existência de uma matriz Zr-a para as condições analisadas. Após a hidrogenação são formados ZrH e ZrH2. O zircônio puro encruado absorveu 1,23%p H. O zircônio puro laminado e tratado termicamente absorveu 0,85%p H. O resultado de DSC mostra que a decomposição dos hidretos ocorre em faixas de temperatura entre 318 e 368°C para a condição tratada termicamente. Para condição laminada, o resultado mostra uma transformação de fase entre 565 e 650°C. O conjunto de resultados permite concluir que a amostra tratada termicamente absorve menos hidrogênio, porém o início do processo é menor. A amostra tratada termicamente é menos resistente a corrosão e a velocidade da corrosão é menor.

The Chuquicamata mining and metallurgical complex is the main Division belonging to Corporation Nacional del Cobre de Chile (CODELCO-CHILE) and it accounts for 50% of the 1.4 Mt of fine copper output of the Corporation. It has been producing copper since 1915. The paper refers to the challenges that Chuquicamata has to solve in the near future. These challenges are: the increasing operation costs associated to a 800 m depth pit with low prices in an overstocked copper market; the increasing people's sensitivity to environmental preservation; and, the transformation needed for achieving high levels of organizational effectiveness. According to Corporate policy, Chuquicamata is making efforts to switch from a management style focused on supply to a management style focused on demand side of the industry. In this direction is tempting to establish strategic alliances to develop both new copper products and uses, to rise the metal demand. In more than 80 years of operation, Chuquicamata had exploited just one third of its geological resources. The exploitation of the remaining two third is a huge engineering challenge, taking into account the depth of the deposit, the impurities content, the decreasing ore grades and the transportation distances for waste dumping. All those factors are relevant in the economical process of transforming geological resources into ore reserves. Chuquicamata has other limitations. First, a 20,000 people town just aside the pit that limits the mining rates because of dust generation; second the scarceness of water in the desert area where Chuquicamata deposit is located; and, finally, the new tailing pond is a problem which solution will demand huge engineering efforts and investments. People are the principal factor associated to a company success. In this field, Chuquicamata have been progressing, but much more efforts from people will be necessary to reduce production costs for being successful as any other price-taker within the copper industry. Chuquicamata must develop the skills of its Supervisors to transform them into leaders and entrepreneurs, who additionally have the challenge of passing on their knowledge to non-professional workers. It is an ethic commitment to assure personal and professional growth of workers, as the only sustainable way to get real and integral success.

The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. It is the role of the exploration geologist to create wealth through the discovery, delineation and characterisation of economic mineralisation. This requires a critical depth of geological understanding.Unfortunately, the resource industry is well known for its cyclic nature. Many of the current generation of workers have only ever experienced the boom of the ‘super-cycle’ and are only just discovering the negative side to the business. For the case of the geologist and especially the exploration geologist, the magnitude of peaks and troughs are usually amplified and may become destructive to all parties. During the uptime a healthy stream of exploration good news becomes the staple diet of company releases, in particular those of junior companies attempting to bolster the share price. The geological knowledge and experience gained thus forms a significant and integral part of the value and therefore, future of a company. On the downturn it is often viewed that geologists are a luxury, an optional extra and a burden on the bottom line with companies entering a period of memory loss and myopia.Retention of geological knowledge however remains critical as projects, companies and cycles mature. Beyond exploration per se, this knowledge becomes both fundamental in de-risking and commercialising an asset (through development or divestment) and in positioning the company for cyclic or counter-cyclic opportunities.The growth and retention of this knowledge base is difficult to quantify in terms of direct value but becomes one of a successful resource companies greatest assets. At worst, its loss can lead to millions of investors’ funds wasted on missed opportunities, drilling, or poorly designed plant and mine.But the rocks are around for the longer haul and pay little notice to the vagaries of the scurrying of Man.This paper reflects on some of the authors own observations through 25 years of iron ore exploration, in why it is critical to always rigorously question the prevailing geological (mis)understanding and the technical and commercial benefits which that may bring, and looks forward to the future.CITATION:Kepert, D, 2015. "Coal transported by rail for Thermal Power Plant in Haldia, West Bengal, India, was to be received and stored in Coal Complex comprising of Wagon Tippler, Track Hopper, Junction Houses and network of horizontal and inclined tunnels. The site was very soft with high ground water level. Deep excavation and dewatering posed great difficulty. Original plan was to drive about 1000 m of steel sheet pile and well sinking which had major impact on cost and time. High ground water was identified as the main problem. Controlling water level and maintaining it would allow open excavation over major areas. Scheme for lowering aquifer with one and two-stage well-point dewatering system was developed following basic principles of groundwater and seepage. Arrangements of wells, installation and pumping were worked out in detail. Water levels could be lowered below bottom levels of excavation. Design of sheet pile was modified under lowered ground water condition. Overall length and depth of sheet pile were reduced drastically. Open excavation was possible in segments over major areas. The scheme was highly successful in smooth and fast progress of underground works. The works were completed safely months ahead of schedule time and with significant saving in cost.INTRODUCTIONThe Coal Receiving Complex of thermal power plant comprised of 250 m long 8 m deep Track Hopper (TH), 12 m deep Wagon Tippler (WT) with provision for addition of another Wagon Tippler. Track center lines of TH and WT were very close. Coal unloading facilities were connected with a network of underground tunnels and Transfer Points (TP) upto Pent House (PH). The facilities were optimized in a compact layout within about 400 m x 120 m area. Initially excavation for TH was started adopting side slope of (1 V : 1.5 H) with 2 m wide berm and dewatering by in-pit sump and pump. When depth of excavation reached about 5-6 m, failure occurred over a long stretch as shown in Figs. 1a - 1b photos. Further work was stopped to develop scheme for carrying out deep excavation and civil works safely."

This paper presents only the highlights of previous research on the paleobotany of coal. The accumulated material has become so vast that a comprehensive review of all findings relating to paleobotany would be far too long. The fact that coal is derived from plants is now so well-known that no further comment is required, but knowledge of the mode of transformation of plant substances into coal is not so general. The plant matter goes first through processes of semirottins-, maceration, and elimination of certain material to form peat, which is then further transformed into coal. The first stage has been termed the "biochemical process," because the more important changes take place under the influence of micro-organisms. Near the end of the biochemical action an unconsolidated peat is formed. The second or "dynamochemical process," caused by the addition of superincumbent rock strata such as sandstones and shales and application of additional pressure and possibly heat through mountain-building forces, results in the formation of higher-rank coals ranging from brown coal to anthracite. These stages in trans-formation of plant material to coal have been described in previous reports.4 The main object of this paper is to bring to the notice of paleobotanists the fact that coal contains an enormous amount of material in a remarkably good state of preservation. Although some of the coal-forming matter has lost its identity, much of the original structure is retained. A large proportion of the coal, therefore, particularly of common bright coals, comprises constituents or components that invariably have retained some of the original plant structure, and many of these structures may be assigned to certain plants. The identity of these plants and of the remains forms the subject of this paper.
