An informal discussion on the application of physical chemistry to steelmaking was held during the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1929. Alexander L. Feild presided. In opening the session, Mr. Feild said: We are all familiar with the cooperative mining and metallurgical studies that were begun in 1920 by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and the Mining and Metallurgical Advisory Boards, and in particular with the work on the physical chemistry of steelmaking which was launched under the technical direction of Dr. C. H. Herty, Jr., in May, 1926. It was this work at Pittsburgh more than anything else that was the immediate cause of the formation within the Institute of a committee on the physical chemistry of steelmaking. During the latter part of 1927 a small group of Institute members interested in. the general subject of the physical chemistry of steelmaking undertook the organization of a subcommittee within the Iron and Steel Committee, to foster an active interest in this comparatively new field among the Institute membership and to obtain papers for publication in the Transactions, covering the various phases of the general subject. This plan was conceived by C. E. Meissner, to whose active efforts at the outset as well as during the past year is largely due whatever measure of success the plan has thus far attained. The subcommittee, now a committee of the Iron and Steel Division, was recognized and formally made a part of the Institute's organization at the February, 1928, meeting. As originally organized and as const,it,uted during the past year the committee has been made up as follows: C. H. Herty, Jr., C. D. King, A. B. Kinzel, John Johnston, C. E. Meissner, L. F. A process for extracting 69 percent of the vanadium from weathered Nevada dolomitic shale containing about 1 percent V205 was developed on a laboratory scale by the Bureau of Mines. The process essentially is comprised of salt roasting, leaching with dilute sulfuric acid, solvent extraction, and precipitation of vanadium as ammonium metavanadate. Carbonaceous unweathered shale was less amenable to treatment. A preliminary cost estimate for mining and processing 1,500 tons per day of weathered shale indicated a production cost of about 1 dollar per lb of V205. Considering recent sales at nearly $1. 75 per lb of contained V205, larger scale testing to obtain more definitive process design and evaluation data may be warranted.

It is recently recognized that the iron reduction and melting as well as the slag separation of a composite of granular iron ore and coal are completed in a very short period of about 10 minutes when the composite is rapidly heated up to approximately 1673K. These phenomena are expected to be applied to a new iron-making process. The mechanism of iron ore reduction and iron-slag separation during rapid heating has not yet been revealed and the fundamental research has just started. Carburization of the reduced iron is regarded as one of the most important steps in this process. In the present work, the composite was prepared from four kinds of coal or graphite as a carbon source and electrolytic iron powder as a completely reduced iron ore. The temperature at which the liquid formation and iron carburization occurred was monitored. Direct observation of smelting reduction behavior was made by a confocal laser-scanning microscope combined with the infrared image-heating furnace to clarify the effect of molten ash on iron carburization. It was found that the meltdown temperature of composite became lower as the melting temperature of coal ash decreased. From the observed result, it was presumed that the liquid slag would act as an important media for the carbon transfer from coal to iron. The carburization mechanism during the smelting reduction was estimated as follows. When slag containing iron oxide melted down and contacted carbon, iron oxide in the slag was reduced and the formation of the metallic iron particle as well as the its carburization occurred simultaneously at the slag-carbon interface. Carburized iron particle was carried from slag-carbon to slag-iron interfaces due to the slag convection flow caused by the difference of the interfacial tension between the carbon-slag and iron-slag interfaces. This report describes development of the fusion-leach crystallization precipitation process for producing a hafnium content feed material for hafnium-zirconium separation plants. Mixtures of zircon, potassium silicofluoride, and potassium carbonate (or potassium chloride) were fused to prepare soluble potassium zirconium hexafluoride-potassium hafnium hexafluoride salts. High extraction of these salts was obtained by countercurrent leaching the fused material in dilute hydrofluoric acid. About one-half of the hafnium was recovered in hafnium-enriched mother liquor by cooling clarified lead: liquor to crystallize most of the zirconium salt. Additional hafnium was recovered from the primary crystals in a multiple dissolution-recrystallization step. Hafnium-enriched oxides having a hafnium-zirconium ratio of more than three times that of zircon were precipitated from the combined mother liquors. The hafnium and zirconium recoveries in the precipitate were 83 and 24 percent, respectively. About 71 percent of the zirconium and the remainder of the hafnium were recovered in potassium zirconium hexafluoride crystals of low-hafnium content.

Rio Algom Limited are currently undergoing a major expansion of their mining operations in the Elliot Lake area. To date this has involved the increase of output at the Quirke Mine from 4080 to 6350 tonnes per mill day (4500 to 7000 tons), the rehabilitation of the Panel Mine to produce at the rate of 2990 tonnes per mill day (3300 tons) by 1980, and the rehabilitation of the Stanleigh Mine to produce 4540 tonnes per mill day (5000 tons) by 1984. In addition, the planning for the rehabilitation of the Milliken Mine to produce 4990 tonnes per mill day (5500 tons) is now underway. This major expansion is taking place at a time of increasing awareness of occupational health matters and has involved very high capital expenditures and detailed planning related to the ventilation system to endeavour the provision of an acceptable environment. The paper discusses the ventilation systems, established and proposed, and relates them to historical and current data on mine air contaminants.

Este trabalho trata da deposição de um nanofilme de sílica através do processo sol-gel na superfície de um substrato vítreo para sua aplicação em usinas térmicas de energia solar. Os filmes foram confeccionados pelo processo de revestimento por imersão utilizando-se um equipamento dip-coating e passaram por um tratamento térmico à 425°C durante 30 minutos. Na etapa de caracterização foram feitos ensaios de espectroscopia de fluorescência de raios-X, refletância difusa no UV-Vis, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e medidas de molhabilidade. As propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas por teste de adesão da fita e dureza a lápis. Resultados dos ensaios de espectroscopia de fluorescência de raios-X confirmaram haver a deposição de sílica sobre o substrato. Foi obtida uma refletância difusa de 2,72% para o filme antirreflexivo. Imagens no MEV revelaram uma superfície lisa, uniforme e isenta de trincas. Medidas de molhabilidade mostraram que houve o molhamento dos filmes pela água, caracterizando-os como hidrofílicos. Os filmes apresentaram uma adesão de 4B e dureza de 3H. Os nanofilmes de sílica confeccionados apresentaram propriedades ópticas e mecânicas satisfatórias para a aplicação solar.

Mining companies have developed sophisticated risk assessment procedures, management systems and personnel competency requirements that facilitate the safety and health of employees, and Australia is a world leader in coal mining safety and health.RISKGATE is an Australian Coal Association Research Program funded online platform that delivers broad cross-industry knowledge about current practice in the identification, assessment and management of coal mining risk. Centennial Coal has engaged with the RISKGATE program, managed by the University of Queensland’s Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, since its inception in 2010, and contributed topic experts to many modules, including underground topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, and inrush).In 2013, Centennial Coal experienced significant unexpected strata failure at the Mandalong mine without any personal injury or fatality. This paper presents a case study in the application of RISKGATE to management of this unwanted event, the steps that were implemented, the information that was sourced and the contribution that RISKGATE made to the final outcomes. "The most common technique for selection of grinding equipment is the Bond method implying determination of a ball mill work index (BWi). The method is perfect for greenfield projects where a ball mill must be sized to grind an ore to 80% passing 75-100 µm. Finer grinding will require application of specific correction factors to a standard equation since initially the method was not designated for sizing of fine (minus 75 µm) grinding mills. Significant issues are related to selection of grinding equipment for treatment of originally fine materials when the standard procedure is not applicable. In 1984, Levin published his special technique titled as “A proposed test for the determination of the grindability of fine materials”, where he offered to use the standard Bond ball mill for determination of a specific grinding energy. However, this method did not meet with wide recognition. In 2017, Institute TOMS under guidance of JKMRC’s specialists performed a testwork aimed at verification of a new universal technique for determination of grindability of initially fine materials. An object was to test three aged tailings samples for the subsequent modelling of comminution circuit and evaluation of potential throughput of the existing ball mills with final grind size of ?80 passing 53 µm. In parallel with development of the universal approach, TOMS’ specialists carried out tests according to the Levin method in order to compare the data resulted from two methods. The results from lab ball mill testing on three products following the alternative test methods are presented in this paper along with the testing methodology and results analysis. Specific energy was calculated for regrinding of the materials to the required size. Difference of the examined methods and assessment of their applicability for sizing of full-scale equipment are explored."

The paper describes, by practical examples, how material flow can be improved on existing installations, and how difficult-to-handle materials can be successfully drawn from storage and fed to fully automated process systems. The examples illustrated are based on actual experience with projects designed for the mining and metallurgical industry. Maintenance costs, where available, are also indicated.

Some time ago, at ameeting of the Institute Prof. J. W. Richards1 said, "I take exception to the statement that all the factors in the production of electrolytic zinc were known long ago.... There is possible in my opinion an improvement of perhaps 50 per cent. in the new electrolytic processes." An examination of the literature of the subject will show the justness of Professor Richards' contention. The work of the earlier investigators was carried on in the shadow of difficulties that, today, are hardly more than memories. We seldom hear now of zinc sponge, that bête noir of the electrolytic-zinc pioneers. Zinc sponge was the name given to a peculiar, soft, black, non-adherent form of zinc deposit that was utterly useless for melting into ingot form. At the big plant at Cockle Creek, New South Wales, in 1897, Edgar Ashcroft2 said that the solution in the plant would suddenly, and without ascertainable cause, go' "bad" and begin to deposit spongy zinc. The most delicate, even spectroscopic, methods of analysis were unable to detect any difference between "good" solution and "bad" solution; either form might change to the other on being kept for a while. When it is added that an outbreak of this insidious disease (which appeared to be infectious, or at least contagious) could be dealt with only by discarding the solution and washing out all tanks and pipe lines, some idea may be gathered of the troubles of the zinc electrometallurgist in what may be spoken of as the "sponge age" of electrolytic zinc. Knowledge of the orientation and relative magnitude of in-situ stresses at the mine scale is important for safe and efficient production from an underground mine. With this knowledge, stope location and scheduling can be optimized. Passive seismic tomography was used for imaging horizontal stress distribution at the mine scale. Microseismic measurements from the Creighton mine were used as input for the tomography calculations. The double-difference tomography algorithm was used, which provides the most precise results. The results clearly show a low velocity zone in the previously mined areas bounded by two high-velocity lobes located adjacent to the mined openings at locations consistent with those expected due to the horizontal stresses at the mine. The overarching goal of the research is to provide a tool that can augment both numerical modeling results and underground geotechnical measurements to allow the mine operator to produce in the safest and most efficient manner possible.

Real options valuation is an alternative net present value framework that is able to incorporate both management flexibility and dynamic project risks. In this paper, management is considering the development of a satellite low-grade zone while operations in a developed high-grade zone continue. If the lowgrade zone is developed prior to high-grade zone exhaustion, mine capacity must be expanded before additional production from the low-grade zone can be processed. This expansion can be avoided only if low-grade zone development is delayed until the high-grade zone is exhausted. The real option model presented here allows the development and capacity expansion decisions to be reconsidered on a discrete half-year basis. It delineates price regions, for given levels of high-grade zone reserves, in which it is optimal to develop the low-grade zone, defer low-grade zone development and abandon the mine irrevocably.

Nos últimos anos, especialmente fibras naturais extraídos de plantas lignocelulósico, ganharam atenção devido ao seu desempenho como engenharia de reforço compósito polímero. Por exemplo, as fibras lignocelulósicas extraídos a partir das folhas da planta curauá (Ananas acutifolius) exibir um potencial de reforço devido à sua relativamente alta resistência. As fibras, entre 0 a 30% em volume de, foram misturados com resina de poliéster sob pressão num molde metálico, e curada à temperatura ambiente durante 24 horas. Este trabalho procura avaliar a resistência ao impacto deste tipo de matriz de epóxi fibra de reforço. A resistência ao impacto aumentado substancialmente com a quantidade relativa de fibras de curauá reforço do compósito. Traditional methods of creating a water tight shaft liner involve the use of segmented or welded steel. When shafts are located in ground that exhibits extremely difficult conditions of high water inflow and hydraulic pressure, composite liners are often combined with ground freezing during construction. The authors were searching for a cost effective and more flexible solution to hydrostatic liners design than the traditional concrete/steel composite design used so far. Searching through new technologies developed for tunneling applications, sprayed on membranes systems seemed very promising but were not developed for the specific circumstances encountered in shaft sinking applications where ground freezing is involved. Even though freezing is a very effective technique, it creates adverse temperature conditions for the application of spray on membranes. In addition, application and hydrating cure times for those membranes products ranged between six to twenty-four hours under ideal conditions (usually temperatures well above freezing point), which eliminated them from consideration in a shaft sinking cycle. While researching different spray on membrane materials, it was discovered that Stirling Lloyd Polychem Ltd. has developed and proven a different membrane material for waterproofing liners in different tunneling applications. The characteristics of the membrane exceeds the pressure parameters encountered in frozen shaft sinking operations, and the chemical cure times were reduced to one hour per layer which worked well into the shaft sinking cycle times. More over their system included a quality control procedure that allowed insuring integrity of the membrane at application time, a very desirable feature for shaft liner construction. However, the frozen rock surface still presented an unknown in the cure time and stability equation. As all membrane products a shotcrete substrate is usually required prior to application. The hypothesis used by the author was to use this shotcrete layer, not only as a substrate, but also as a thermal insulation against the frozen rock and the membrane during both application and curing time. The authors knew from experience that shotcrete could be applied successfully over frozen rock. But the shotcrete temperature curve over time was unknown and no information were found in the available literature. Testing was required to determine whether a suitable mix of shotcrete could be applied to the frozen shaft wall to provide enough heat of hydration for a suitable period of time to create conditions suitable for membrane application and curing.

O fenômeno de colagem é a formação de aglomerados de pelotas, denominados clusters, devido à sinterização do ferro gerado durante o processo de redução. O resultado disto é a elevação da perda de carga nos reatores de redução direta. Tal fenômeno vem sendo estudado por vários pesquisadores, pois as práticas operacionais dos reatores têm priorizado o uso de temperaturas de bustle gas (BG) cada vez maiores, o que potencializa o aparecimento dos clusters. Uma alternativa para controlar a colagem é por meio de utilização de agentes de coating (AC’s). Em relação às matérias primas utilizadas como AC´s, as questões que surgem agora são as seguintes: Como se comportam os AC’s em temperaturas muito elevadas de BG? Qual seria a maior temperatura possível de BG? A fim de começar a entender a melhor maneira de responder a estas questões foram realizados alguns testes de caráter exploratório e não convencionais para avaliar o comportamento de alguns materiais de coating a elevadas temperaturas de redução. Os resultados destes testes mostraram a possibilidade dos AC’s funcionarem a temperaturas maiores que a de inicio do amolecimento da carga e que, nestas temperaturas, a sua granulometria pode ser parâmetro determinante para seu desempenho. O aprimoramento dos ensaios de simulação do processo de redução em reatores de redução direta é fundamental para responder as questões que se apresentam em relação ao tema.

The abstract discusses the extraction of silica from nickel laterite ore using a hydrothermal process with sodium hydroxide. The effects of reaction temperature, time, and NaOH-to-ore ratio on silica extraction were investigated. The optimal conditions were determined, achieving over 98% silica extraction. The mechanism involves the reaction of Si in lizardite and quartz with sodium hydroxide, forming sodium silicate solution. Other metals like Mg, Fe, and Ni are enriched in the residue.

Collectors commonly used in flotation to date fall into two main classes: ionic and nonionic. The use of neutral or oily collectors is generally limited to the flotation of nonpolar minerals onto which they are adsorbed by forces of a physical or 'Van der Waals' type, while ionizable chemical collectors are utilized for all other types of minerals, adsorption in this case involving bonds essentially of a chemical nature. Though chemical adsorption is more selective than physical adsorption, even heteropolar collectors are active towards certain classes of minerals (sulphides for example) rather than towards one individual mineral. Thus, in order to float a given mineral from a mixture of minerals belonging to the same class, modifiers have to be used to render the action of the collector more specific. However, there are often considerable difficulties involved in this procedure and the desired results are not always attained, especially in the case of minerals of complex composition whose surface properties are not sufficiently well known. Hence the importance of seeking out collectors capable of linking selectively with given minerals. Selective linkage is possible if the collector structure incorporates active groups having specific affinity for certain cations characteristic of the mineral surface. The decision to investigate the possibility of utilizing chelate--forming reagents for flotation was based on the premise that phenomena which occur in solution and involve chemical reactions in the strict sense of the meaning and those which occur on the surface are closely correlated (1)

It will hardly be worth while to spend time over the discovery of this mine, how lumps of galena were picked up and brought to town, and how legends were told of an old mine from which Revolutionary bullets were made. This is an entirely new mine, with no evidences of former or ancient workings in its immediate vicinity to guide or attract the prospector. The first pit was opened in May, 1874. This Bureau of Mines report proposes a new methodology for estimating industrial dust explosion hazards in terms of three probabilities or co-factors: The dispersion of the dust, the existence of a flammable dust concentration, and the presence of an effective source of ignition. This method or rationale is proposed as a replacement for the "explosibility index" that was first suggested 25 yr ago, but which, by consen-sus among leading researchers in the field, is now outdated. This report presents a detailed critique of the deficiencies of that old, material-oriented index, and develops the logical rationale for its re-placement by an approach that is better suited for quantitative hazard evaluations. A variety of such evaluations are illustrated, which show how a quantitative prediction of explosion frequencies can be obtained from laboratory measurements and operating conditions in a given indus-trial facility. The method has some pitfalls, particularly as they re-late to the correlation of events or their randomness. These are discussed, as well as the method's other limitations and uncertainties. This work is intended to provide a beginning to a quantitative approach to explosion hazard assessment. To that end, a new method is proposed for estimating thermal ignition probabilities in terms of the measured laboratory autoignition temperature of a dust, its relationship to the operating temperature, and its distribution within a given industrial system.
