THE figures on enrollment in the engineering schools of the United States and Canada indicate that the total number of students in these schools for the current year, 1949-50, is about 10% less than it was a year ago. This year, 226 - 533 undergraduates and graduate students are studying engineering in the United States and Canada as compared with. 249,913 students last year. These figures are taken from advance data in the Journal of Engineering Education for February 1950.

"A carefully planned laboratory test program is the foundation for the successful development of a sulfide flotation process. In this paper, the development of a copper-molybdenum flotation process is described. However, the concepts discussed can be applied to most sulfide flotation systems and to many industrial minerals projects as well. Each step is examined, beginning with sample procurement and covering sample preparation, flotation test preparation grinding, scoping flotation tests for reagent scheme selection, rougher flotation parameter evaluation and cleaner circuit evaluation, through to locked-cycle testing and pilot plant design and operation. Ore variability and modeling to determine the response of various ore types to the optimum conditions established is also examined.IntroductionA carefully planned laboratory test program is essential for the successful development of any sulfide flotation process. These programs usually begin with a series of batch tests on several ore type composites to evaluate appropriate reagent schemes and delineate optimum rougher flotation conditions, such as primary grind size, flotation pulp density, flotation pulp pH and retention time. Cleaner parameters such as regrind size requirements, cleaner pH, pulp density and number of stages are then defined. Semicontinuous locked-cycle tests are performed using the parameters established in the batch tests to determine the effect of middling streams recirculation on flotation performance. The data generated and the experience gained in the locked-cycle tests may be used to design and operate a continuous pilot plant if relatively large amounts of concentrate are required for further process development, such as optimization of byproduct molybdenum production from bulk copper-molybdenum concentrate.A comprehensive ore variability program is undertaken to determine the response of various ore types to the optimum conditions established. These ore variability programs often test hundreds of samples in standardized batch rougher and cleaner tests to ensure that the orebody is well understood.This article describes the development of a copper-molybdenum flotation process, but the concepts discussed can be applied to most sulfide flotation systems and many industrial minerals projects. "Effective January 1, 1990, mines in British Columbia are subject to a new provincial mining tax statute, the Mineral Tax Act. Under this Act, mines are subject to a two-tier tax system, with a minimum tax payable on ""net current proceeds"" and a higher tax paid on net income. For many mines, the present value of tax paid under the new rules should be comparable to the amount paid under the old rules. Earlier cash payments could pose difficulties, particularly for smaller mines, but existing producing mines could benefit in the short-term.IntroductionEffective January 1, 1990, British Columbia has replaced the provincial mining tax regime under the Mineral Resources Tax Act with a new system under the Mineral Tax Act. The new rules borrow some ideas from other provinces (New Brunswick's two-tier concept, and Saskatchewan's indexed costs) with a view to levying a tax that is fairer to both the producer and the province."

Waste oil is a growing problem throughout industries where environmentally responsible disposal ways are usually costly. There are many industries have developed process to reuse of waste oil as a source of energy on their own premises. Hanwha Mining Services Indonesia is one of blasting service that manufacturing explosive using waste oil. The usage of 60 % waste oil content in fuel solution already developed applied since 2020 at Petrosea-Kideco Site and will be increase until 100 % in 2022. The purpose of this research is to analyze the increasing of waste oil usage from 60 % to 100 % content at Petrosea Pit without reducing the emulsion quality and performance, and surely eliminate the fuel cost and reducing waste oil processing cost. Some trial conducted to determine the effect and quality of using 100 % waste oil content on emulsion at production blast. The method use to know the quality of 100% waste oil of emulsion is by direct application on bench blast. Using Microtrap VoD recorder, explosive energy will be recorded into m/s dimension, microtrap recorder the speed of explosive detonation in line with the speed of burning wire in the blast holes. The summarized of this research present that the using of 100 % waste oil content on emulsion can be applied on bench operation with the result of Velocity of Detonation (VoD) data is 4,559 mm/s, the mean of fragmentation size is in range 65.31 to 225.62 mm, the average of digging time on 1st layer is in range 10.2 to 11.6 s and on 2nd layer is in range 8.9 to 9.5 s, and the productivity still achieve on target. The result of all parameter quality still in the standard range of Hanwha and Petrosea.

An impure variety of barite, which lends itself well to the manufacture of heavy drilling mud for oil wells, is widely distributed throughout the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas. The ore mined in the area and used for drilling muds usually contains an average of 67 percent barium sulfate, although ores as low as 50 percent BaSO4 are occasionally used. Due to the increased demand for barite for drilling caused by the intense search for hew oil occurrences during the years 1945 and 1946, the Federal Bureau of Mines began an investigation of barite deposits in the Ouachita? Mountains in October 1946. In all, 10 barite deposits were examined, trenched, sampled, and studied during the investigation, which was terminated in May 1947.

"The paper point out the volcanogene and sediment-hosted base metal deposit from the Colombian cordilleras have been considered in the light of tectonogenic models for these deposit types, based upon the recent re-interpretation of the geology and tectonic assembly of the Northern Andean Block by Cediel and Cáceres and Cediel. Numerous distinct propitious metallogenic settings containing important but subexploredbase metal mineralisation are manifest as a result of the tectonic evolution of this northern-most sector of the Andes. This report describes preparation characteristics of significant coalbeds in Tazewell County , Va . In 1961 Tazewell County produced 933,110 tons of clean coal from six coalbeds ; the Lower Banner , Raven , Jawbone , Upper Seaboard , and Pocahontas No. 3 and No. 5. Samples from all of these beds , except the Lower Banner , were included in this study plus a sample from the Pocahontas No. 4 bed . Of the samples collected , only one would require upgrading to be of metallurgical quality . The coals ranged in rank from high- volatile -A to low- volatile bituminous .

Os materiais compósitos tornaram-se ao longo dos últimos anos, essenciais ao surgimento de novas tecnologias. Para tanto, é imprescindível que alguns cuidados sejam considerados ao desenvolver estes materiais, como o uso do processo de fabricação adequado e a aderência fibra/matriz, sendo este último um fator preponderante na resistência mecânica final do produto. Também se torna cada vez mais necessário o desenvolvimento de materiais com capacidade de utilização ecologicamente correta. Diante disso, foi fabricado um compósito parcialmente ecológico, utilizando como reforço um tecido de sisal, e como matriz resina poliéster. Ainda, buscando a melhoria da aderência fibra/matriz foi efetuado um tratamento com Hidróxido de sódio (NaOH) a uma concentração de 3% no reforço de sisal. Para a caracterização mecânica do compósito, foram realizados ensaios de tração uniaxial nas fibras tratadas e não tratadas, bem como nas lâminas que utilizaram estas fibras como reforço, mediante a norma ASTM 3039. Quanto a esta propriedade mecânica, foi observado que o tratamento químico superficial diminui expressivamente a resistência à tração da fibra e, em contrapartida, aumentou a resistência do compósito polimérico quando comparado ao que utilizou fibra não tratada, confirmando assim o efeito positivo do tratamento na superfície do reforço de fibra natural.

The Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada has emerged as a major new province for diamond mineralisation in less than three years. This is primarily the product of a diligent search in the form of a scientifically based exploration effort. However other factors, including positive aspects of the business and the legal environment have also been identified as assisting the exploration process. In my view these have increased the likelihood of diamond mining becoming a major new industry for Canada. The supportive role of various government agencies has been important. In addition, the character of many of the joint venture deals that have been done has provided an attractive setting for the capital intensive evaluation and development work that is now required to bring the diamond discoveries into production. Perhaps of equal importance is that with the recognition that is being given to the success of the NWT diamond ventures, Canadian explorers are continuing to attract new risk capital for further exploration. This paper attempts to model and quantify the probability of exploration success translating into successful mine development.

Semipilot scale tests were made to demonstrate a newly developed electrorefining process which could be extrapolated to commercial scale in producing high-purity nickel and cobalt from crude nickel metal and high-grade ferronickel. The new process comprises application of solvent extraction techniques to remove and separate cobalt and iron from nickel and the electrodeposition in diaphragm cells of pure nickel and cobalt from chloride-based purified electrolyte. Using water insoluble organic amines, the solvent extraction operations enabled production of commercial-sized nickel and cobalt cathodes of higher purity than that of commercial electrolytic metals. The solvent extraction operation for separation of cobalt from nickel was made simpler than the conventional method. Furthermore, the solvent. extraction operation for iron removal made possible the electrorefining of ferronickel without the prohibitive loss of nickel resulting from the method ordinarily used for iron removal.

Los finos de coque son materiales que se producen en toda planta de gas y coque y que no pueden ser usados directamente en los hornos metalúrgicos debido que sus propiedades físicas y quimicas ison ndeseables. En este sentido, los finos de coque se producen en altos hornos de fierro y plomo, donde una capa de carbón sin aglomerar y parcialmente coquificado, permanece en la parte superior de la carga y es durante esta descarga que se separa del coque grueso. Sin embargo, el coque descargado es muy grande para el horno y debe reducirse a un tamaño pequeño. Por tanto, el texto señala que para que el coque llegue a los hornos debe contener más de 20% de finos y en el caso de los hornos de plomo, es necesario que se separe de los finos debido a que puede generar un sofocamiento en el rendimiento de los hornos. Así también, describe la operación de la planta de coque en La Oroya, como las características deseadas del coque.

Fluid flows in metallurgical reactors play a vital role on liquid metal cleanliness for both ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy. Thus, it is absolutely critical to understand different fluid flow mechanisms, and the use of computational methods to model the complex non-isothermal, turbulent, single- and multiphase-flows, has to be appreciated. The present case study emphasizes on controlling the flow of liquid steel in a tundish and enhancing liquid metal cleanliness. CFD modeling was used to build a robust mathematical model, and effects of flow control furniture and non-isothermal conditions were analyzed. The mathematical model was validated against water model experiments. Parameters that were conducive for inclusion removal were identified and implemented in the plant. Some flow control devices could increase inclusion removal to a great extent compared to the existing configurations. In cases, where a hot ladle was poured into a relatively cooler tundish, inclusion removal was better, whereas results were catastrophic in cases where colder liquid was poured from ladle to the tundish. Similar techniques can be applied for other liquid metals including light metals and non-ferrous metals.

Wind turbines are subjected to complex form of cyclic loadings with variable amplitudes and frequencies. The cyclic loading and the accumulation of plastic strains with the number of cycles will result in degradation of the foundation soil stiffness. The foundation stiffness degradation will result in a shift (reduction) of the fundamental frequency of the wind turbine. Although this issue is recognized in the guidelines for wind turbines foundation design, no specific provisions are provided in the guidelines to consider the long-term stiffness degradation. In this paper, a practical procedure to consider the long-term cyclic loading effects on the stiffness of wind turbine foundations in cohesive soil is proposed. The procedure is based on 3D FEM modeling and reliable empirical methods to estimate the stiffness degradation due to the cyclic loading. Using the proposed procedure, the long-term performance of the P&H tensionless pier foundation with and without a reinforcing collar at the top of the pier is assessed. The numerical results demonstrated that the long-term performance of the P&H tensionless pier foundation with a reinforcing collar at the top of the pier is outstanding with negligible long-term degradation of the foundation stiffness.

The difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for over-age mobile mine equipment at the Gay Mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians, or computer oriented. The Gay Mine is located 17 miles east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Company and the FMC Corporation with 1.5 MM - 2.0 MM tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24 yard scrapers; twenty-one 30-50 ton end dump trucks; four 32 42 yard shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units. Authorization of capital expenditures for equipment replacement is dependent upon a favorable profitability index (true rate of return on investment) plus a favorable payout time. The system is based on cash flows and requires the determination of (1) the net cash outflows in the form of capital expenses plus (2) the expected cash inflows resulting from reduced expenses and depreciation tax credits. After adjustments for taxes and the time value of money, the net amounts are used to calculate the required indices. The basic elements for the system related to the replacement of mobile mine equipment include: (1) the determination of dollar penalties to be expected from the continued use of aging equipment; (2) the selection of equipment that will provide the greatest return on the investment dollars; (3) the quantification of the expected savings; and (4) the calculations of the prescribed indices. Sixteen elements were determined spectrochemically in the general range of 3 to 1,000 ppm in high - purity columbium . Samples were converted thermally to Cb2 O , mixed with graphite and Ge02 , and excited for 15 seconds using a 15 - ampere dc arc . For the molybdenum determination , the oxidized samples were mixed with NaCl and Geo₂ and excited for 30 seconds . Spectra were recorded on photographic plates , and spectral line transmittance values were measured photometrically . Relative - intensity ratios of selected analytical and internal standard spectral lines were plotted against concentrations of standards to form curves from which concentrations of impurities were read . Average precision of the method was 11.2 percent relative standard deviation .

Mr. Geo. W. Bain: Dr. H. C. Cooke's discussion of 'The Geology and Mineral Deposits of the Harricanaw and Bell River Basins' possesses many of the elements of a good political address; perhaps his long residence in Ottawa has some bearing upon his method of discussing geological work. The three essential parts of the address are all included. First, the plank - "Contributed discussion on the Geology and Mineral Deposits of the Harricanaw and Bell River Basins"; second, the personal attack upon the opponent, to show antipathy to the opponent as well as to his ideas; and third, controversion of a number of statements, which have been made to appear as planks of the opponents platform, even statements and work which are in no way connected with one under discussion. In the following pages, I will confine my attention to a defense of my work in the Harricanaw and Bell River basins, leaving discussion of the other areas mentioned by Dr. Cooke until results of the re-surveys are published. It is intimated that it was impossible to make a geological examination of an area of 1,600 sq. miles on a scale of four miles to the inch (base map supplied) in three and a half months, because "the area is accessible only from the railway along the northern edge together with a few roads close to it, and from rather wide separated streams?. There is one way, known to most geologists, whereby a place can be reached other than by railway coach or motor boat, and that the oldest of all -- walking. Most of the region was reached in this fashion. The boundaries of all the 18 townships included in the map are surveyed, nine are divided into lots, and the north-south and east-west centre lines of most of the others are surveyed and have mile-posts placed.

Reverse-flotation technology is often applied in iron ore dressing plant, in order to enhance the quality of iron concentrate from magnetic separation. However, this technology has disadvantages in operating cost, energy consumption, and environmental protection. Developing innovative equipment to process magnetite ore more-effectively is a way to get rid of these disadvantages of reverse flotation and improve the quality of iron concentrate. This paper describes the development of Complex Flashing-Field Magnetic Cleaner, a new kind of equipment based on the principle of combination of separation in magnetic field and separation in gravity field. This innovative equipment possesses a tailor-made magnetic system and has the characteristics of a magnetic field, which can strengthen the formation of magnetic agglomerations and the dispersion of gangue minerals, improving the quality of separation. The automatic control system developed specifically for this equipment can further increase the accuracy of separation and stabilize the process. Test results showed that this equipment is reliable in operation, economically beneficial, and has large potential of application.

"The Geotextile Encased Columns (GEC) deep foundation system for embankments on soft soils was introduced some 20 years ago and is now considered State-of-the-art worldwide.The GECs consist of compacted granular fill, similar to common gravel columns, with one decisive difference: they are confined in a high-strength low-strain flexible geotextile “cylinder” (encasement). This engineered element provides a very efficient tool to control and optimize the behavior of the system. GECs perform very well even in extremely soft soils ensuring bearing capacity (stability) and reducing settlements. Due to the encasement, they a lso provide high lateral ductility. A wide range of fills including sands can be used.The remarkable reduction of vertical stresses in the soft soil surrounding the GECs results in a decrease of lateral pressure as well. Such reduction combined with the lateral ductility allow GECs to be also used for lateral pressure-relief adjacent to sensitive foundations, e.g. rigid piles. The application of GECs as lateral pressure relief was recently used in Brazil and Germany where bridge abutments were built on concrete reinforced-piles. The GECs below the bridge approaches and adjacent to the piles decreased the lateral pressure to acceptable values.This paper presents two case studies for which the most relevant parameters, the geotechnical conditions, specific problems, engineering philosophy, final solution and lessons learned are discussed. Furthermore, instrumentation programs were applied in both projects. The most important results in terms of displacements and stresses are shown, evaluated, summarized and commented upon, focusing on the lateral stress-relief, followed by conclusions and recommendations."
