An improved replica technique is developed for a nondestructive study of the nucleation and growth of fatigue cracks. Three different growth stages of a fatigue crack were observed. An initial stage of high growth rate is followed by a long period of very slow growth, until finally a third period of high growth rate leads to fracture. THE metal-fatigue process is of a very complex nature. The experimental approach towards fatigue is susceptible to many minor influences which, together with the unavoidable scatter in testing results, makes the interpretation a matter of extreme care. The generally accepted fact that, in a homogeneous material, the fatigue cracks start at a free surface indicates that surface studies may contri-but in an essential way to a better understanding of the fatigue mechanisms. Indeed metallographic observations of the fatigue phenomena have been very fruitful in the last decade. The study of extrusions, intrusions, and persistent slip bands has contributed much to the present knowledge of the early processes in fatigue.' The drawback of the current metallographic techniques lies in the fact, however, that either observations of fatigue phenomena had to be made in a destructive way after an only partly executed test or a sequence of observations on the same test bar was only possible on notched specimens.2 4 In both cases an uncertainty exists as to the nucleation and growth of the fatigue crack in an unnotched test bar, where the crack can start at any place of a large area and develops in a test bar, which is macroscopically

This paper provides an example of how industry can respond to the implementation of new regulatory approaches to mining risk, health and safety by adopting a robust, practical, software-based approach to the management of risk accountabilities in terms of competence, experience and suitability for obligations and responsibilities, as required in Queensland Coal Mining operations due to the introduction of Recognised Standard 22 (‘RS22’; Resources Safety and Health Queensland, 2021). Based on the authors’ experience from working with several Qld mine operations, it offers a snapshot of the experiences, approaches and reservations faced collectively by industry as a result of the introduction of RS22. Several challenges exist within the detail of RS22, leading to varied interpretations, implementation strategies and overall compliance between mine sites. Arguably the single biggest challenge identified has been how to find a balance between compliance and practicality – considering cost, operational interruption, available pathways for delivery of competence, ongoing compliance and value adding to the business operations and people. Software-based solutions are increasingly being relied upon to address the introduction of new regulatory approaches and the significant administrative load placed on mining operation Site Senior Executives (‘SSE’) due to RS22 means this case is no different. This is further complicated given the continuous, ongoing changes with the site management structure witnessed by the authors across each of the mining operations as a result of continuous changes to personnel, the site risk profile and an overall mining industry uncertainty of how to respond to RS22. The stringent reporting/notification requirements under legislation compounds this further. The approach put forward by the authors is a well-considered rationale and approach to the application of training and skilling; and equally how to ‘future proof’ the coordination of site training needs around changes to the Management Structure, the Risk Register, skilling processes and succession planning. A brief investigation of other legislative frameworks concluded this approach would likely meet or exceed expectations of jurisdictions across Australia and overseas, making this a highly flexible approach for establishing a competent Management Structure to provide safe systems of work.

Three new apparatus arrangements were tested. Results with one of these arrangements average 74.2 pct silicon removal and 61 pet oxygen efficiency (disregarding removal of carbon and manganese).

What was perhaps the first attempt at basic converting in the Southwest was made by the late Charles F. Shelby at Cananea early in 1907, when he removed the acid lining from one of the 8 by 12-ft. barrel-type converters then in use at the reduction works of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co. and substituted a lining of one course of magnesite brick. In this shell, he blew 21 taps (about 180 tons) of matte to white metal before the brick gave out along the tuyhre line. In every case, the white metal so made was transferred and blown to copper in other converters. The cost of the lining was $700 and Mr. Shelby gave up the experiment as impracticable. No further serious effort to bessemerize copper mattes in a vessel having a more or less permanent lining of basic brick was made by any of the large copper smelters in the Southwest until some months after Messrs. Peirce and Smith had brought the question permanently before the public, and had proved it to be a metallurgical and financial success by their work at Baltimore and Garfield. Early in 1911, the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co. had in operation at its reduction works at Cananea, Mex., several 8 by 12-ft. barrel-type converters lined with magnesite brick which had previously been operating with acid linings. In the 18 months following, these converters produced 50,000 tons of copper. In June, 1912, this company installed the first of its new equipment of six stands of electrically operated 12-ft. Great Palls type converters, and shortly afterward discontinued the use of the smaller shells. In September, 1911, the Consolidated Kansas City Smelting & Refining Co. had installed at its El Paso plant two 10 by 26-ft. Peirce-Smith converters. Later, in March, 1913, one standard Great Falls type converter was added. About the time the Peirce-Smith converters were going in at El Paso, the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. was experimenting with basic linings in 7-ft. by 10-ft. 6-in. barrel converters at its plant in Douglas, Ariz. These efforts were sufficiently successful to enable the plant to "handle the total output of copper in these small shells until the standard Great Falls converters were substituted in June, .1914.

"INTRODUCTIONThe shales of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have been known to experience time-dependent deformations (TDD); those initiated by excavation-induced stress relief which progress with time as a function of rock porewater salinity, access to freshwater (or air) of lower salinity, clay and calcite content, and the buildup of swelling pressures within the rock mass. These deformations can induce long-term pressures on shaft walls and tunnel linings, especially if the permanent works are constructed soon after excavation, with very little time delay. This paper presents measurements of time dependent deformation of recent shaft and tunnel projects constructed in the GTA, and draws conclusions regarding the main influences on the TDD. The key input parameters for the numerical predictive model are critically assessed. Projects which are discussed include the Billy Bishop Airport Pedestrian Tunnel, Hydro One Midtown Tunnel and Hanlan Feedermain (Contract 3).MECHANISM OF TIME DEPENDENT DEFORMATIONExplanation of MechanismThe Georgian Bay Shale unit consists of typically moderately weathered to fresh, grey to dark grey, fine to very fine grained fissile shale interbedded with slightly weathered to fresh grey, fine grained calcareous siltstone and limestone interbeds. There are two distinctive features of the shale in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). One is a high horizontal stress regime, and the second is long-term time dependent swelling behavior which develops when the following factors occur (Lo and Micic, 2010):• Stress relief of the rock mass• Outward salt concentration gradient from pore fluid of the rock to the ambient fluid• Availability of fresh waterThe swelling is a consequence of the reduction in confined stress in the rock which occurs upon excavation in combination with a differential gradient in salinity between the saline rock porewater and freshwater or even humid air. Osmotic and diffusive processes result in a decrease in the salinity of the rock porewater achieved by an overall increase in the water content, resulting in volumetric expansion of the shale rock over time. The City of Newark is making a comeback with new mixed-use multi-storied Residential Development projects. The majority of developers tend to use driven H-pile deep foundation systems to support their super-structures. A different approach was recommended for one particular new development near the Passaic River. The surficial geology included glacial deposits consisting of loose to dense sand overlaying relatively soft silt and clay and a lower stratum of medium-dense sand. During a preliminary site investigation for the project, bedrock was encountered at depths ranging between approximately 168 feet to 182 feet below the ground surface. Design capacity required a single pile of 200 tons. Two different pile foundation systems were evaluated in conjunction to the typical driven H-pile system in order to review potential costs and construction schedule impacts. The two alternative pile systems evaluated were tapered tube piles and drilled displacement piles. Theoretical calculations were followed by in-situ load testing. The field testing results indicated the use of drilled displacement piles as the best option for a portion of the proposed building. This paper discusses the different piles systems considered, installation and using drilled displacement piles to minimize cost and optimize construction.

This demand, at the present time, is being fulfilled by the increased use of computers via information systems, decision support systems and management information systems. The idea of incorporating intelligence into computers to aid decision-makers has been evolving for over two decades. In recent years, significant progress is reported on applications to business and sciences. In engineering functions, the Artificial Intelligence approach that seems to have great potential is the application of Knowledge Based Systems.The primary objective of this paper is to identify domains in mining engineering where application of knowledge based systems could be beneficial. Incorporation of the expertise required during the analysis and interpretation stages of an engineering design problem through knowledge based systems is recognized as an area of significant benefit. To this end, the components of knowledge based systems for mine ventilation and strata control design are described. The potential applications and limitations of knowledge based systems are outlined. IntroductionCorrect decisions are the key to success in any enterprise. Scope of decisions varies with the echelons of management hierarchy. The decisions of top management are strategic, relating to the long-term future of the organization. In a mineral organization, these deal with such issues as the acquisition of a new mineral property or the diversification of the business to exploit additional markets. At the operational level, a manager is concerned with decisions pertaining to day-to- day eventualities related to production activities and other short-term needs. In either case, the prerequisite is the timely availability and use of information. The difficulty involved in decision-making depends on the situational aspect. In. many cases, the decisions to be made under given conditions are fairly straight-forward and standard. This may be due to experience gained from decision-making in similar situations in the past. In fact, many decisions in operations management are either repetitive or routine."

Meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid(DMSA) was studied as an additive for thiosulfate leaching of gold. DMSA was added to solutionscomposed of either sodium thiosulfate or calcium thiosulfate and the solutions were tested for their ability to leach pure gold samples as well as a calcined gold ore from Barrick Gold Corp. Results showed prolonged leaching of pure gold samples when DMSA was added at a concentration of 5µM; however, higher concentrations were shown to inhibit leaching. Differential capacitance measurements of the interface indicated that DMSA adsorbed as a defective monolayer on the surface of gold at low concentrations and formed a more compact monolayer with increased concentration. It is proposed that a concentration of 5µM DMSA produces a defectivemonolayer on the surface that still allowsthe transport of oxidants to the underling metal while inhibiting the formation of polysulfide passive layers that arise fromdecomposed thiosulfate.The 5µM DMSA/CaS2O3 system was also studied using calcined ore. Results showed that the initial leaching rates in the presence of DMSA are lower than those obtained in thiosulfate alone. However, after 10h, prolonged leaching is again observed when DMSA is included.

"Kaolinite is a dioctahedral aluminosilicate widely used as paper filler and coating pigment. At the best of our knowledge, kaolinite is not widely used in polymer industry. Therefore, in this study, the flame retardant effect of kaolinite in ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) and polypropylene (PP) were studied and compared with an alumina trihydrate (ATH) and Talc. Cone calorimeter results shows that the weight percentage of ATH in EVA/ATH composites must be at least 50 wt. % in order to reach an improvement in fire retardancy in terms of pHRR. In the case of EVA/kaolinite, even with 35 wt. % the pHRR is largely reduced. Comparing PP/Talc and PP/kaolinite composites at 30 wt. %, both fillers leads to same reduction in pHRR with a slightly better performance for PP/kaolinite composites. In both cases an intumescent behavior of kaolinite composites was observed that could slow the rate of the rising degradation products, allowing radical recombination reactions. Also, it was observed that kaolinite forms a protective layer on the surface of the samples, which could insulate the material. These behaviors (intumescence and formation of a protective barrier) could reduce the transfer of the degradation products to the flame and explain the better performance of kaolinite composites. INTRODUCTION The use of mineral fillers as fire retardants in polymer matrix are well known and widely studied [1]–[10]. Aluminum and magnesium hydroxides (respectively ATH and MDH) are the most widely used inorganic fire retardants. To achieve fire retardancy with these mineral fillers, about 50-60% loading is required which decrease the physical properties of the composites. The fire behavior of composite EVA has been the subject of many studies [4], [7], [9]–[15]. EVA copolymers are commonly used in the cable industry, due to their high ductility, even at high loading rates. In such applications, the flame retardant systems should be introduced into the polymer to improve the fire reaction. Many flame retardant systems have been tested but the most used industrially relates to formulations based on hydrated mineral fillers (aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide). Their low cost and reduced fumes generation explains their success. However, to obtain good performance with this type of flame retardants, it is necessary to incorporate high levels (up to 65 wt %), which severely impact other properties such as processability and mechanical behavior. The main modes of action of these flame retardants are the dilution of the gas phase, the endothermic decomposition and a barrier effect created by the inorganic oxide residue which may be improved by the incorporation of other components such as montmorillonites, silicas or talcs."

The aim of this paper is to question the need to develop bespoke monitoring and assessment methodologies and criteria, thereby ‘reinventing the wheel’, when designing and assessing the success of important natural habitat and ecosystem restoration schemes at mine sites in the UK and Australia. It draws attention to the existence and applicability of the Phase I Habitat, National Vegetation Classification (NVC) and Condition Monitoring methods in the UK and similar approaches used in Australia. These are long accepted established methodologies and have published accounts for describing, assessing and managing natural vegetation communities, habitats and ecosystems. They are often used at the environmental impact stage, but seemingly rarely, if at all, in restoration design and management at mine closure. Their application to mine restoration and closure is illustrated and discussed by reference to a surface coalmine in South Wales, UK.It is concluded that the application of a combination of the Phase I Habitat, NVC and Condition Monitoring methods is highly relevant to the expectations of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its implementation in the UK, and probably in Australia too. The methodology and criteria described could be incorporated into the guidance and specified in the mining permits so that there is clarity as to the expectations and requirements for monitoring and assessment for bond release. Their use could be of wider application where there is a requirement to assess the success of restored CBD assets and ecosystems.CITATION:Humphries, R N, 2014. "A West Kentucky mine operation in No. 11 seam, encountered floor heave, due to the localized increase of the thickness in the fireclay mine floor. Floor heave has overridden seals installed in two mined out panels. The third seal’s location was planned for isolating that area from the Mains. A plan of support has been developed to prevent repetition of the floor heave and related problems outby the seals. The applied ground control measures were successful. An attempt of a 3D numerical modeling was made, that it would match the observed behavior of the mine floor and could be used as a design tool in similar conditions. In the paper described are sequence of events, a mitigation ground control system applied, and the first stage of numerical modeling.IntroductionWest Kentucky coal mine operation in the No. 11 seam has approached an area where the fireclay floor thickness increases to about 5 ft. Delayed floor heave has been observed. In the first sealed area (Panel KK), floor heave has overridden the seals and has begun to progress outby. This could not be allowed at the new seal location PP described in this paper because such override would affect the mains. Previously numbers of standing support systems were used, but their effectiveness was not satisfactory as is illustrated in Figure 1, Figure 2, and Figure 3. Therefore, with sealing of the next area approaching, mine management was looking for a better solution that would eliminate the problem. In that stage, our team looked closely at the geology and strength of roof and floor, as well as the characteristics of ground failure around the seal at the first site. The technical literature has been searched as well Haramy et al. 1986 Hsiung and Peng 1987, Peng 2008, Santos & Bieniawski 1987. This led to the identification of factors responsible for the ground failure. It has been determined that increased fireclay thickness from typically less than 2 ft to about 5 ft, when compared to the previously mined parts of reserve, and the strong limestone strata just above the immediate roof composed of 2 ft of black shale, created conditions of failure. It appeared that, when pillars were punching into the mine floor, the strong roof did not break but was bending, exerting high pressure on outby pillars, causing rib failures and closure. This is a similar mechanism to a strong roof affecting longwall shields. The remedial action planned was additional support."

The Sensor Based-Sorting technology is an emerging technology applied in mineral separation and concentration. The technique consists in using a method known as Dual Energy X-ray Transmission sorting (DE-XRT). The particle's position over the conveyor belt was evaluated and, despite de variability of results, shows that there is no a position with greater accuracy on the sensor's reading. Results obtained indicated that DE-XRT sorting technology was able to significantly reduce the mass and the ash content of the ore feed, being an interesting option for reduction of costs and improvement of coal quality in beneficiation plants.

"District of Arabianranta (Helsinki, Finland) has been founded on an old seabed, which was filled with miscellaneous soil materials. The subsoil consists of very low shear strength clays and organic clays (gyttjas). The soil was moving towards the sea at a rate of 1050 mm/year, because of filling on top of the soft subsoil. In the middle of 1990’s it was decided to build a residential area to Arabianranta, because it is located only 5 km away from the downtown. To inhibit the movement of soil, it was planned to build this 700 m long deep mixed column-wall barrier along the shore of Arabianranta in the years 1997–2005. A lot of instrumentation and inclinometers were analyzed and it was noticed that the column-wall remains at its place and the displacement rate inside the wall has been only 0.44.6 mm/year after construction works. Nevertheless, the displacement of soil at the landward side of the column-wall is still 1.25.1 mm/year. The soil at the seaside of the barrier is also moving towards the sea 12.922.2 mm/year. Another problem might be displacements of soil near the places where the column-wall ends (tails).1. INTRODUCTIONArabianranta district (Helsinki, Finland) has been an industrial, storage and wasteland area for a long time. Developing this area into a residential area was earlier considered too expensive, so it has been constructed during last decade. The organic clay layers (gyttjas), which have weak shear strength and high water content, were covered by various layers of fillings done in different phases. Because of the fillings, the area was not only consolidating, but also moving horizontally 1050 mm/year towards the sea due to the fact that the frictional soil under clay layers slopes towards the sea. A trial deep mixed structure was constructed in 1997 to inhibit the horizontal displacements of soil. The actual construction of the columnwall was completed in 2000-2005 with overlapping deep mixed cement columns on the seaward boundary. The barrier was built so that the horizontal movements would not risk the pile foundations at Arabianranta. The length of the barrier is about 680 m and width varies between 1220 m. There is a great amount of instrumentation near the barrier (inclinometer casings and other measuring devices). All this measuring information has been collected and analysed at 2014 to find out how this deep mixed column-wall has affected the horizontal displacements."

To produce low-carbon (<30 ppm) steel in the tank degassing process, a ladle of steel with an oxidizing slag is placed in a vacuum tank equipped with bottom bubbling. The kinetics of this process are slow compared to the more prevalent RH degassing process, providing the impetus for the present work. There are several aspects to this work: water models of the fluid flow in the ladle; simulation of the decarburization (CO evolution) with C02 desorption in water; pilot-plant (60 kg) studies of the decarburization kinetics; mathematical modelling of the fluid flow in the ladle; mathematical models for each of the kinetic sites (plume, top slag and auto-nucleation); and full-scale trials. The results show that during the refining cycle the contribution from each reaction site changes, suggesting avenues for reducing cycling time and final carbon contents.

The management and disposal of the muck produced by an EPB TBM is an important aspect of this topic. Soil conditioners with higher biodegradability and lower eco-toxicity have been specifically developed to comply with strict regulations in several countries around the world, with the goal of reducing the environmental impact of tunneling on soil, water, and living organisms. This paper highlights innovative sustainable soil conditioners and how they differ from traditional products. Additionally, environmental considerations for TBM projects around the world and in North America will be examined.

Este artigo modifica a heurística de sequenciamento ATCS (Apparent Tardiness Cost with Setups) com vistas à sua aplicação na retomada de pilhas de minério (entendidas como tarefas a serem sequenciadas) em pátios de recuperação. Para tanto, inclui-se na formulação critérios relevantes para as operações de pátios de estocagem, como tempo disponível para o empilhamento de um produto, demanda relativa, tempo de recuperação da pilha e data de entrega, tempo de deslocamento das recuperadoras entre pilhas (setup) e índice de qualidade. O método proposto foi aplicado em um sistema de recuperação de minério composto por dois pátios, duas máquinas recuperadoras e doze pilhas. A sequência de recuperação gerada pela heurística proposta foi considerada coerente por especialistas de uma empresa mineradora.

SINCE my working life of 32 yr has been spent in and about the anthracite mines of the Hudson Coal Co., and the previous 4 yr in a college school of mines, I can write best about the safety program of a coal mining company. However, most of the suggestions, statements and practices mentioned herein are applicable to the members of a safety organization and program of almost any industry. It is realized that industrial officials actually interested in real safety work are fully acquainted with the requirements of a practical safety program. Therefore, for such persons there may be nothing new in this paper. The Hudson Coal Co. of Scranton, Pa., employs 7,000 men and produces 5,000,000 tons of anthracite annually at nine collieries scattered for a distance of 40 miles throughout the Lackawanna and Wyoming valleys of northeastern Pennsylvania. For the past 17 yr of the above mentioned 32, I have been engaged in safety work as a safety inspector, assistant mine superintendent, and at present the safety engineer. I have also had the privilege of visiting coal and metal mines in other parts of the United States and Canada. We Americans are the most careless people in the world. If any one doubts this statement why are 100,000 of our people killed accidentally annually? Or why during the almost four years we were engaged in World War II were more of our people killed accidentally at home than were killed in our army, navy, marine corps, coast guard, and other services during the same period? We are careless everywhere in our homes, on the highway, at work and at play. The purpose of this paper is to outline the requisites of a safety department and its program to stop the accidents occurring to employees at work in mines or industrial plants. The first requisite for a safety program is that the management must be convinced of the need and value of a real safety program. By "management" is meant each department head from the president down. Otherwise a good safety department with a good safety program will not succeed because it will not have the proper personnel and equipment to work with, its rules and regulations will not be enforced, and the members of the safety department will be belittled in the eyes of most of the workmen and supervisors. They are then in a position to have practical and first hand knowledge of the accident hazards of the industry, how to prevent them, and in general the problems of both the workmen and officials. El presente trabajo presenta alternativas indirectas para la exploración de depósitos de pórfidos de cobre (DPC), en los dos arcos magmáticos desarrollados entre Arequipa y Tacna. Estos dos arcos están representados por la Formación Guaneros y los batolitos de Punta Coles e Ilo, con edades Jurásico a Cretáceo inferior, y El Grupo Toquepala con el Batolito de Yarabamba de edad Cretáceo a Paleoceno. El análisis tectónico, aeromagnético y geoquímico de estos dos arcos, evidencia posibles áreas favorables al emplazamiento de cuerpos ígneos que puedan haber originado yacimientos económicos. De forma que se busca reevaluar los conceptos geológicos en tectonomagmatismo para la exploración de pórfidos de cobre, así como el desarrollo de ideas conceptuales a nivel regional de los patrones magmáticos y estructurales especialmente entre Perú y Chile y contribuir la exploración de Porfidos de Cobre desde el punto de vista geoquímico y tectónico.
