The Calico area lies within the Walker Lane fault zone, six miles north of Schurz, Nevada. The mineralized area is overlain by a thick section of Tertiary tuffs and ash-flows, that have been intruded by a series of andesite plug, dikes, and sills. The pre-Tertiary rocks outcrops only in two areas at one to two miles distance from the drilling areas. Underlying the volcanics are sediments ranging from siltstones, sandstone, calcareous shales, to carbonates of the Luning sequence. These have been intruded by one or more phaneritic intrusives ranging in composition from quartz diorite to quartz monzonite, with the development of a skarn zone on the south flank that contains extensive mineralization consisting of magnetite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and chalcopytite, with traces of sphalerite, galena, and molybdenite. The magnetite, pyrrhotite, and part of the pyrite appears to be contemporaneous with the skarn, while, part of the chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, molybdenite, quartz, and calcite, occurs as minute veinlets cutting the other minerals. This later mineralization may be associated with a late stage of the same sequence, or possibly associated with another intrusive to the southwest. Geophysical work has consisted of aerial magnetics, ground magnetics, gravity, seismic, and induced polarization surveys. Preliminary induced polarization surveys indicated anomalies at depth, both over the magnetic anomaly and to the northwest. Subsequent IP work confirmed this earlier anomaly, and drilling disclosed extensive mineralization at depths of 400 feet on the northwest end and over 1,000 feet to the southeast.

The paper point out that the carbonate Carbonate Replacement Deposits (CRDs) are epigenetic, intrusion-related, high-temperature sulfide-dominant Pb-Zn-Ag-Cu-Au-rich deposits that typically form lenses or elongate to elongate-tabular bodies referred to as mantos or chimneys. Recent studies have shown that CRDs do occur in predictable geologic environments, allowing focusing of regional exploration. In addition, they have mappable alteration patterns that can be used to determine the magnitude of a given system and elemental zoning patterns that greatly enhance the chances of drilling success. Several recent discoveries of “blind” replacement deposits have been made by careful field evaluation of host and capping rocks coupled with geophysics.

Nos últimos anos face a quantidade significativa de reparos gerais, parciais e emergenciais no revestimento refratário dos fornos em um curto período de tempo (média 02 fornos por ano), haviam paradas prolongadas dos fornos de cal para execução destes reparos onde era necessário prever todos os anos um alto valor para compra de cal, revestimento refratário e mão de obra de manutenção refratária. Afim de reduzir estes custos, aumentar a disponibilidade e produtividade dos fornos, foi feito um estudo e análise para detectar os problemas para serem tratados. Chegamos a conclusão que para aumentar a campanha dos fornos era necessário manter um ritmo estável de produção para evitarmos os choques térmicos no revestimento, treinamento da contratada e implantação do novo projeto para realização de limpeza dos canais o que eliminava o impacto de alavancas contra o revestimento, revisar o projeto o que mudaria a geometria e a composição de algumas peças refratárias, aperfeiçoamento dos monitoramentos do revestimento dos fornos para identificação mais rápido das ocorrências de problema de forma a permitir a aplicação de técnicas corretivas de maneira eficiente além de um intenso trabalho junto ao quadro operacional incluindo cursos e melhorias nos procedimentos que impactavam diretamente na operação correta dos fornos, além disso, melhorias significativas de manutenção contribuíram para melhor performance dos fornos de cal. É possível checar os resultados que este projeto proporcionou aumentando em 06 anos no mínimo a campanha dos fornos eliminando os reparos parciais e emergenciais realizando somente reparos gerais além da redução de custos.

This Bureau of Mines report is essentially a handbook, or manual, for making the type of mineral resource valuation commonly required for such public policy problems as mineral leasing. The principle of resource valuation through the capitalization of cash flow is well established. A mathematical procedure, based on a simplified accounting system, is detailed for calculating cash flow from revenue, plant costs, and operating expense. Variations of procedure cover cost depletion, percentage depletion, and depletion limited to 50 percent of net income. The influence of the depletion provisions of the tax regulations on the value of a resource to an owner and to an operator is analyzed. The relationship of royalty, bonus payments, and sales price to resource value is also described, and methods for approximating resource values using these payments as input data are developed.

Selective flotation to separate copper minerals from, for example, Mo- and/or As-bearing minerals is a continuing problem because the selectivity of current systems is imperfect. Selective Cu-As flotation is currently difficult, and the most common Cu-Mo selective flotation method uses NaHS; this must be done in an enclosed system because, under acidic conditions, this method produces hydrogen sulfide. In this paper, some novel alternative flotation processes that use redox reactions are discussed; these methods have a much lower environmental impact. Oxidation and reduction reactions can be used to make copper minerals more hydrophilic and Mo-bearing minerals more hydrophobic. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicated that the copper minerals became hydrophilic because hydrophilic iron precipitated and several hydroxides covered the copper minerals’ surfaces, whereas the molybdenum minerals remained hydrophobic because their sulfide surfaces were not covered. Flotation experiments on these minerals after redox treatments indicated that excellent separation of Cu-minerals from Mo-minerals can be achieved. Possible mechanisms for this separation were investigated using detailed surface analyses and thermodynamic calculations. The additives used to initiate the redox reactions are easy to handle and make these new flotation procedures better than current processes because the new methods do not emit effluent gas and because they are commercially viable. "Previous work has shown that the strengthening Al-Mn alloys with copper leads to the formation of an undesirable reduction in recrystallized grain size. In this study the mechanisms of strengthening and recrystallization behavior in a continuously cast automotive heat exchanger fin stockof Al-1.1wt%Mn-0.5wt%Fe-0.3wt%Si with a0.3wt%Cu addition were investigated. Metallurgical analysis revealed that the Cu strengthening was dominated by the formation of dispersoid particles, while solid solution strengthening decreased with the Cu additions. This result is attributed to the decrease in the amount of Mn solid solution. The post brazing recrystallized grain size was reduced compared to that not containing Cu. It is postulated that the Cu addition leads to a decrease in the amount of Mn in solid solution which leads to a finer grain size. This effect is attributed to Mn in the aluminum matrix inhibiting boundary migration but allowing other grains to grow during heat treatment. The results are rationalized based on particle stimulated nucleation (PSN), wherein dispersoid particles are more likely to become active recrystallization nuclei during the heat treatment. The increase in the number of active dispersoid particles with Cu addition is correlated to the recrystallized grain structure.INTRODUCTIONImprovements in properties such as strength, braze ability and corrosion resistance in thermal fin stock alloys are all means to gain improved efficiency in heat exchangers particularly in automotive applications. While Al-Mn alloys dominate automotive heat exchanger fin stock alloy, even small chemical compositional changes can profoundly influence these properties (Kawaharaet al., 2004; Yoshino et al., 2009). The microstructure (particularly the grain size and shape) also plays a key role in determining the product performance and hence the thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) must also be considered. The casting method (typically conventional direct chill, DC, or continuous casting) significantly influences the properties in no small part due to the very different TMP routes that are used. Continuous casting is generally favored for fin stock applications as its higher cooling rate (which can be 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than DC casting) leads to finer as-solidified intermetallic particles and an increase in super-saturated solid solution elements (such as Mn)that are known to improve fin stock performance such as strength, braze ability(Okiet al., 2008)."

O titânio processado por metalurgia do pó tem sido cada vez mais utilizado na fabricação de implantes cirúrgicos, ortopédicos e dentários, devido às características de biocompatibilidade e propriedades mecânicas do material obtidas por esta técnica. A componente cisalhante da deformação característica do processo de extrusão angular em canal (EAC) permite a consolidação das partículas pela junção de novas superfícies e o elevado grau de deformação obtido confere considerável refino dos grãos do material. No presente trabalho o material foi processado por metalurgia do pó seguido de extrusão angular em canal, enquanto a caracterização envolveu técnicas como microscopia ótica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e ensaio de dureza. Os resultados obtidos neste estudo permitiram a caracterização da microestrutura, da dureza e da porosidade de compactados de titânio submetidos ao processo de extrusão angular em canal em temperatura da ordem de 375°C, com redução do tamanho de grão médio, de 30 µm para 1,32 µm no material processado por metalurgia do pó seguida por EAC e aumento da dureza, de 161 para 264 HV, respectivamente. A fração em área de poros, que atingia cerca de 4% no material apenas compactado foi reduzida para aproximadamente 0,8% no material submetido ao processo EAC.

Coke combustion during sintering process is significantly governed by coke breeze size distribution, which in turn affect sinter quality i.e. sinter granulometry, Tumbler index, Reduction Degradation Index and Reducibility Index of sinter. To know the effect of microfines of coke breeze on sintering process parameters, pot sintering tests were conducted and it was found that when microfines are eliminated and optimum coke size (1-3mm) is used yield of sinter increased by more than 7%. Similarly productivity increased by 9%, the strength of sinter i.e. ISO Tumbler Index increased by 2.3% and +10mm sinter size increased by 5.5%. Controlling of microfines during crushing and by improving crushing index will result in improved quality and productivity of sinter with lesser amount of coke breeze. This paper describes that how to optimize solid fuel i.e. coke breeze consumption in sintering process through granulometry control. In Novemeber of last year I visited a mica mine in Hunan Province, China. For nine months , we had been trying to sell Chinese mica to a customer in Belgium. Talking to the customer was like negotitating with a stone wall. The buyer refused to communicate any -thing other than his steadfast refusal to consider Chinese mica. He would not advise us what he wanted, what specifications or grades. He would give no indication if our price at market, or reasonable, or totally out to lunch. He would not even accept samples. It took no genius to guess that the mica buyer had at some time in the past bought a shipment of Chinese mica and had received a disaster. I invited the mica mine in Hunan in order to see for myself what could be done - without massive investment in equipment and instruments - to upgrade the quality of the mica for export. We had seen this type of customer reaction before. One disgruntled customer who had pur¬chased pigment grade barites direct from China ranted and raved about unreliable and inconsistent quality. It did no good to explain to him that China is a big country, with hundreds of mines scattered throughout many areas, each producing a different product. Our further explanation that Chinese export organizations also varied in degree and efficiency of customer service fell on deaf ears. Samples had no effect on his perception. Eventually we showed him photoraphs of two mountains of pigment grade barites. One lot was our sales of pigment barites to a major European minerals processor. Our Chinese barites stood proudly white and beautiful next to a hill of other material which now appeared at best mediocre and dull by comparison, and which the buyer had decided to reject after he received our Chinese barites. Finally the customer was sufficiently impressed to look seriously at our guaranteed specification and the outturn analysis performed by our other customer.

Adequate estimation of equipment costs is a key factor in a feasibility study and in evaluation of design alternatives for mining and mineral processing projects. Inaccurate early cost estimation could lead to the elimination of investment benefits. However, this estimation is complex and time consuming because of data accessibility problems and consequently access to a rapid, up-to-date and accurate tool is desirable for carrying out cost estimations.This paper describes the development of models for estimating capital and operating costs for a jaw crusher, which is used as the primary crusher for a wide variety of mineral beneficiation plants, applying single and multivariate regression analyses, together with the design of experiment approach, based on principal component analysis. Explanatory variables include gape size, length of feed opening and power as numeric (quantitative) variables and toggle type (single or double) and the existence of extra heavy duty construction as categorical (qualitative) variables. The performance of each model has been investigated and comparing the estimated R-squared (R2) of each model, the best was selected and its validity examined. The cost models include the capital and operating costs along with the operating cost components. The results indicate that the suggested best cost model is sufficiently accurate for use in feasibility studies.

Sossego Mine was the first Vale SAG mill operation to process copper-gold ore. It is located in the state of Para, in the south-eastern Amazon region of Brazil. In the first six years of continuous operation, Vale investigated different alternatives for improving circuit performance by investigating operating conditions, mainly focusing on the SAG mill. Today, after a steady increase over five years the annual production rate seems to have stabilized. It is hoped this work will show how the SAG operating practice have been perfected with time and as new data are collected. Historical data of mill grind-outs and crash stops helped create operation curves depending on the ball charge volume and total charge volume. Also noted were impacts on throughput due to the effect of reducing liner weight and the ore type characteristics.

All of these terms are often used synonymously by the trade and even in mineralogists and other reference books. Actually, tripoli is a ma- is a material of definite and distinct physical and chemical properties and all of the other terms belong to a different material with just as definite and distinct properties.Originally the term tripolite (loosely called tripole) was given to a diatomaceous cart from Tripoli in Northern Africa. Dena (J.D. Dana, A System of Mineralogy 6th Ed.) calls this material tripolite and gives no authority for the use of the terms tripoli. Between 1880 and 1890 the deposits near Missouri, were opened and the material placed on the market as ""Tripoli"" no doubt due to its resemblance in some respect to the original tripolite or diatomaceous worth from Tripoli. Since that time the term tripoli has with increasing definitenesss been reserved for the Seneca material and other siliceous of similar origin and physical properties, while all siliceous material of organic origin, containing dilators, has been called diatomaceous earth (or its synonyms infusorial earth, kiselguhr, etc.). Rottenstone is sometimes classed with tripoli."

Since dewatering is a costly process, removal of moisture from relatively fine size lignites is an important industrial problem. As the lignite gets finer, the presence of micropores and relatively low hydrophobic nature of lignite lead to trapping of large quantities of water in the coal matrix. Lignites used in power stations need to be dried to a certain degree of humidity before it is transferred to the combustion chamber. It is generally wise to dewater coal as much as possible by physical means before it is dried. However, dewatering cost in some cases may be prohibitive. Thus, sometimes removal of even little percent moisture may be of great help in such operations. Surfactants have been used to increase the efficiency of coal dewatering. It is crucial to select appropriate type and amount of surfactants in order to get higher efficiency. Since the hydrophobic characteristic of coals increases with increasing the coal rank, dewatering of bituminous and anthracite can be accomplished using low HLB surfactants (Oily), however, these surfactants are not efficient in the case of low rank coals like lignites and brown coals. It is suggested that adsorption of low HLB surfactants on high rank coals is governed by Acid-Base interactions rather than electrostatic and van der Waals forces. Since this characteristic in lignites is not strong enough, low HLB surfactants could not be effectively adsorbed on low rank coals to make surface more hydrophobic. In this paper, a special set-up has been designed to study the effect of high HLB surfactants on dewatering of fine lignite particles. It is shown that high HLB surfactants function more efficiently on low rank coals than low HLB ones.

"In city center sites around the world, and in particular in London, foundation reuse is becoming increasingly widespread as the ground is filled with detritus from previous developments. This paper sets out a systematic framework to consider the need for and benefits of foundation reuse and key issues to be resolved for foundation reuse to be successfully adopted on redevelopment projects. Once foundation reuse has been identified as a potential foundation solution there are several key stages in the design and construction process where the decision to reuse foundations needs to be assessed. The paper concludes by emphasising the importance of ensuring that the foundations being installed now can more easily be reused in the future.INTRODUCTIONThe concept of re-using foundations is not new, and has been adopted on an isolated project-byproject basis for many years. However, over the past decade, interest in the potential of reusing existing piles and caissons within Europe has increased significantly, with a growing interest in the United States of America and Japan. The need has been driven by necessity: on many urban sites the space available for new foundations diminishes with each new set of piles, and these problems can only grow in the future.Initiatives such as the European Union's RuFUS (Re-use of Foundations for Urban Sites) research project have resulted in identification of the key issues for technical viability and risk that have previously hampered potential foundation reuse projects.There is a need to define a systematic approach to the reuse of foundations so that the risks associated with reuse can be identified, managed and mitigated. This requires improvements in knowledge to provide confidence in the long term behaviour of the foundation support and address the risks involved in reusing existing foundations to overcome perceived obstacles in making foundation reuse a realistic option for many sites."

Of increasing importance to the student of fuels economics has been the extent to which different primary energy sources can substitute for each other in the various energy markets of the nation. Knowledge of the nature and extent of fuel interchangeability can aid the fuels economist in projecting trends of energy utilization, as well as giving him a better understanding of the past and present conditions of fuel markets. It is also important to the consumer to know just how much flexibility he can maintain in his energy consuming operations. And, finally, various governmental bodies show keen interest in the degree of energy substitutability in determining public policies concerning the fuels industries. The presence of excess fuel production capacity in the United States during the early 1960's indicates that fuel interchangeability should become more prevalent in the increasingly competitive energy markets of the nation. Discussion of fuel intercompetition is almost always restricted to qualitative terms-because of the lack of comparable statistical data, between the different energy sources in geographic or "type-of-use" fuel, markets. There are exceptions, of course, such as, the excellent fuel consumption data which are available on steam electric generating plants throughout the nation. In other sectors, statistics are at best incomplete.' Inmost instances, indirect fuel consumption indicators, such as sales of fuel burning equipment, are extensively used to measure market shares of a particular fuel; however, these indicators are hard to evaluate precisely without prior knowledge of the total competitive market.

“Down The Hole” (DTH) hammer drilling is often necessary to advance the casing during pile construction where the test bores have determined difficult drilling conditions with obstructions such as boulders, cobble and glacial till. The use of compressed air to operate DTH hammers in foundation drilling has been a contentious point in many regions of the world due to its potential to disturb the ground around the pile being constructed. There are many examples of damage to adjacent building foundations where compressed air exiting the pile being drilled disturbed the subsurface around the building’s existing piles. This paper looks at the use of compressed air in DTH hammer foundation drilling and the move towards controlling the exhausted air to avoid over drilling the pile, causing potential damage to nearby piles. Simulated models of air flow penetration into the soil of different configurations of drill bits are discussed to highlight design changes employed to better control the air during the drilling process. A case study of the construction of a water-tight pipe pile wall for a building’s underground parking structure is studied to demonstrate the potential of DTH hammer foundation drilling where the air is fully controlled.

During recent studies concerning the effects that various surface treatments, surface imperfections, locked-in residual stresses and metallurgical and geometrical notches have upon the mechanical behaviour of metals and, in particular, upon their tension-bending characteristics under impact loads, it became apparent that specially developed methods and samples would be of great assistance in determining the desired data. This paper describes and discusses a number of different types of double-notched tension-bending impact samples which have been considered and examined for this purpose. The types most suitable for exploratory investigations are proposed for application in the study of the _behaviour of metals, their welds, and, in particular, their surfaces, when subjected to various notch-severities, surface imperfections, strain rates, temperatures, and constrained states of stress (i.e. the relations of the three principal stresses). It is expected that the proposed double-notched tension-bending samples and the proposed test methods will also contribute toward further understanding of the cold brittle behaviour and the notch-sensitivities of metals. IT can be truly stated that no branch of the engineering industry has progressed more rapidly in the last few years than that of welding. In spite of depressed economic conditions, this industry has continued to advance along scientific lines, replacing the old hit-and-miss method of welding. The development work is intensive, and increased activity is recorded in every sphere of the industry, new applications of existing methods, together with new processes, being added to those already proved in practice. The general acceptance of the welding processes can be measured by their utilization as a manufacturing tool in the metal-working industries. Many manufacturers have partially or wholly adopted welding. These concerns have on their staffs welding specialists, design engineers, and metallurgists, who are qualified to design and supervise the manufacture of welded parts, at a considerable saving to the purchaser. The steady, consistent, and sound growth of welding is based upon investigation of the fundamentals of the various processes, together with their proper application. The classification of welding processes varies in different countries. In Europe, they are divided into two main classes, namely, heterogenous and autogenous. In the former, the parts are joined, as a ruler without melting the edges, and by using as filler a metal different from that of the object welded. Such welding differs from soldering and brazing in that higher temperatures are required to effect the union of the parts. In autogenous welding, the parts are joined by melting of the edges, with or without the addition of a material similar to the parts being joined.

A heavy mineral deposit about 1.6 km (1 mile) in length, 0.13 km (0.08 mile) in width and averaging about 3 m (10 ft) in thickness is exposed approximately 130 km (80 miles) east of Denver, along Interstate 70, in Elbert county, CO near the town of Limon. The deposit is exposed in a geomorphic feature known locally as Titanium ridge. The dominant heavy minerals, accounting for about 70% of the total heavy-mineral suite by weight, are ilmenite, garnet and zircon. The mineralized zone appears in a series of visually interpretable facies that are stacked vertically and represent subtidal, forebeach, backbeach, washover fan and aeolian depositional environments. These paleoenvironments are analogous to depositional environments represented by a modern heavy-mineral bearing facies tract on St. Catherines Island, Ga. Thus, Titanium ridge provides evidence that heavy-mineral accumulation models for late cenozoic deposits in the Georgia and Florida coastal plains are applicable to heavy-mineral deposits of the Western Interior subsurface and, by implication, the Western Interior Seaway, extending from Mexico to the Canadian Arctic.
