Thermal, mechanical, and physical properties of virgin and heat-treated Pittsburgh seam coal were determined as part of a comprehensive study of combustion of monolithic coal block. The information was sought to help characterize pyrolysis and combustion processes in underground coal mine fires but should also prove useful in the study of in situ and surface coal gasifiers. Measured properties include thermal conductivity, specific heat, thermal expansion, density, compressive and tensile strength, porosity, and permeability. The transport property data were obtained (when feasible) in two mutually perpendicular directions of the anisotropic virgin coal material, and coal samples carbonized for 5 hours at temperatures of 350° C, 475° C, 500° C, 650° C, and 850° C. Other coals (Pocahontas No. 3, Sewell, and Illinois No. 6 seams) were investigated for porosity and relative permeability. Interdependence among all properties was evident from the results; however, only a few correlations could be developed owing to inhomogeneity of coal material and specimen variation, which had the effect of reducing the accuracy of measurement and increasing data scatter.

Despite the recognised importance of tailings management, there remain little data on the potential benefits of biological treatments compared with physical and chemical treatments. The operation of the majority of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) continues to employ mainly physical solutions, such as sub-aerial tailings slurry deposition, with increasing adoption of thickening, paste and filtration to dewater the tailings involving the addition of chemicals such as flocculants and coagulants. However, with tailings production continuing to escalate rapidly due to the increasing demand for commodities and reducing ore grades, available technologies have not demonstrated cost-effective performance at high tailings production rates. This paper examines the emerging role of bacteria to better manage tailings, reducing risks and optimising storage capacity. Bacteria have the potential to enhance tailings dewatering, maintain their permeability, delay the onset of desiccation cracking, and improve their shear strength. Bacteria-treated tailings may be suitable for use as construction materials. Bacteria also have potential in limiting the dusting of tailings and facilitating rehabilitation on closure. The paper describes a series of laboratory involving the addition of harmless bacteria to a range of tailings. The bacteria form a compact material called calcite (a common and stable form of calcium carbonate), which immobilises the tailings particles, releases water, and cements the tailings in a stable and natural matrix. The water released can be recovered or evaporated, depending on site objectives. The bacterial reactions are linked to physical and chemical processes, providing the potential for an optimal mix of technologies for particular tailings and site conditions.CITATION:Cifuentes, H and Williams, D J, 2018. The coal industry in South Africa is briefly outlined. Test- work carried out on bulk samples of coal in the laboratory and used in the design of the Van Dyks Drift washery are described. Factors affecting the selection of equipment and the designed capacity of the plant are discussed. A description of the crushing plant, washery and load out section is given together with performance data obtained in the final acceptance tests. New features incorporated in the Van Dyks Drift plant and in more recent plants of the Group are outlined.

"The piles often are also subjected to lateral (horizontal) forces and moments. In fact, there are some structures where the primary function of piles is to transfer lateral loads to the ground. Proper analysis of laterally loaded piles is very important to the geotechnical and civil engineering profession.In the present investigation an experimental study has been carried out with free head short model cast iron hollow piles of outer diameter of 24 mm and L/d ratios of 8, 10, and 15. The experimental results have been supplemented by numerical techniques using PLAXIS-3D Foundation version 2.1 software. The results have been found to agree reasonably well with the experimental results. Further finite difference approach has been adoptedto reduce the computational time and to calculate the coefficient of modulus of subgrade reaction (?h) from the load- deflection data obtained from PLAXIS output at different pile depths. The parametric study has been extended for the non-dimensional form defined as flexibility ratio (F.R.),where ?h, L, Ep and Ip are the coefficient of modulus of sub-grade reaction, the embeddedlength of model pile, elastic modulus of pile material and the moment of inertia of model pile about the central axis respectively).The variation of coefficient of horizontal modulus of sub-grade reaction (?h) has been studied with respect to the following parameters for homogeneous soil system: relative density andL/d ratio. It has been found that the logarithm of flexibility ratio increases with increase inrelative density and increase inL/d Ratio. The values of ?h obtained by the proposed method have been, found to be close to the numerical results.As output of this research, graphs have been generated in respect of different parametric variations to gain an insight into behavior of piles under lateral load for short piles."

"Sensor based automatic ore sorting technologies are used in the minerals industries to efficiently remove waste and submarginal grade material from crushed and screened run-of-mine (ROM) ore, producing a coarse (typically >10 mm) upgraded preconcentrate at an early stage in the mineral processing circuit. This avoids additional energy intensive downstream processing of this rejected component of the ROM feed, leading to lower unit operating costs and reduced tailings disposal volumes.Test work on bulk low-grade gold ore stockpile samples from Central Norseman Gold Proprietary Limited has been conducted, indicating high gold recoveries as well as high material rejection rates. A financial model, based on these results, evaluates grade sensitivity and identifies a minimum stockpile grade for adequate financial returns. The base case modelling estimates that the ex-stockpile grade (including the fines bypassed fraction) can be more than doubled through ore sorting and that the project will be highly viable with strong cash flow generation at stockpile grades as low as 0.7 g/t gold. Os aços inoxidáveis austeníticos apresentam interessante junção de propriedade mecânica com elevada resistência à corrosão. Porém, quando aplicados em temperaturas na faixa de sensitização e submetidos a ambientes agressivos, tornam-se suscetíveis à corrosão intergranular. Para verificação da suscetibilidade desses aços sofrem este fenômeno são realizados ensaios de corrosão. Dentre eles os mais utilizados são os contidos na norma ASTM A262, que possui cinco diferentes procedimentos. Este trabalho consiste na comparação dos procedimentos das Práticas A, C e E, contidos nessa norma, para determinação da tendência à corrosão intergranular do aço AISI 304L. Para isto, amostras do aço foram sensitizadas a 675°C por uma hora e em seguida submetidas aos diferentes ensaios descritos na norma. Após a realização dos três procedimentos, considera-se que a metodologia mais assertiva e confiável seja a Prática E, conhecido como ensaio de Strauss, e que as amostras analisadas não apresentaram corrosão intergranular.

The mining industry’s attention has shifted over the last decade with the recovery from the downturn resulting in greater development of innovation and new work methods in a bid to remain competitive and deliver higher productivity. The emphasis on cost reduction to improve profit margins has primarily been the focus of the “work smarter” campaigns embraced within the industry. But is this strategy holistically the best-for-business, or does it place a ceiling on revenue opportunities and inhibit mining companies from truly maximising value? Businesses need to maintain a balance between active cost management and revenue generation often resulting in cost reduction strategies at site level. These strategies have merit, assessing areas of cost wastage across operations and creating space for opportunity. However, this potentially can create distractions from the goal of enabling growth and lead to the sacrifice of quality and delivery. Focusing too heavily on cost reductions without addressing revenue generation is an unprofitable lens to look through, and the relationships between cost, revenue, quality and profit margin can often be overlooked resulting in missed opportunity to maximise value. How these relationships are effectively employed by mining companies to reap the rewards from an overarching corporate perspective down to site level remains a fluid concept depending on the nature, operating market and strategy of the business. A common directive from businesses to their operations is to strive for greater profitability and productivity. The quantification of these requirements, and the nature of the cascading message delivered, impacts the methods employed by the operational team to meet the expectations of the business. Cascaded strategies, if not delivered with appropriate participation and buy-in can often be perceived to be knee-jerk and create frustration for operations who are squeezed to deliver on expectations by slashing site costs. This squeezing is not only felt by the mining operation but at the individual level and can result in increased team stresses. In some cases, this may also steer behaviours towards activities that result in corner cutting and an elevation of operational risk, potentially increasing associated incidents and injury. Driving down costs by any means can create an unhealthy tunnel vision where value is no-longer assessed for best-forbusiness results. By flipping the viewpoint to a value-based approach revenue opportunity may be realised and potentially exceeded, however this opportunity may be missed if value is over shadowed by a cost heavy focus. By analysing a selection of real operational cases (ranging from mining contractors through to in-house mining giants), it becomes apparent that practical revenue maximisation strategies are not only key to an increase in value and cash flow but to a stronger understanding of business drivers for sites and operators alike. In the cases evaluated additional revenue opportunities are foregone in favour of cost reduction strategies resulting in negative impacts on the associated operations and wider businesses. Alignment towards value generation is king. If strategies are not implemented focusing towards value and revenue maximisation, the opportunity loss experienced by mining operations could continue be great and the question should be posed; when the next up-turn hits will operations be ready to reap the rewards or still have a glass ceiling above their heads?

"In this work the dissolution, precipitation and adsorption behaviour of gold in acidic iron sulphate media containing small amounts of chloride ions is investigated via batch laboratory tests and OLI thermodynamic calculations over the temperature range 25-250°C. Chloride ions may be present in industrial pressure oxidation/pressure leaching (POX/PL) operations due to elevated water salinity levels or due to intentional addition as is the case of the CESL Copper Pressure Leaching Process. Thermodynamic calculations show that AuCl4 - may form depending on the free Cl-/Au ratio and temperature, its stability increasing with increasing Cl- concentration and decreasing with increasing temperature. On the other hand during POX/PL, we know that massive precipitation of iron in various hydrolysis products and compounds occurs. Hence of interest is the question how AuCl4 - that may form during leaching interacts with the iron precipitation products. Gold(III) chloride was found to co-precipitate with iron(III) (oxy) hydroxides and arsenates forming in the autoclave but not with natrojarosite. Upon further investigation it was discovered that activated carbon added in the autoclave (as done in CIL) acts as preferential sink for the mobilized gold, hence opening the potential for the development of a direct cyanide-free gold recovery process in acidic sulphate leach reactors.INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of gold from ores and concentrates has evolved over the years with processing routes becoming increasingly complex. Given the high value of gold, any reduction in losses during recovery operations constitutes an important economic benefit. One such loss that needs to be addressed is the potential solubilisation of gold during pressure oxidation (POX) of refractory sulphidic gold feedstocks. For example, Agnico Eagle Mines reported a loss in gold recovery due to the formation of a gold chloride complex (Garofalo, 2009). Gold is known to form complexes in solution, such as gold(III) chloride, if an excess of chloride ions are present. The fate of such soluble gold chloride during pressure oxidation and the subsequent neutralization of the acidic discharge slurry will determine if gold is lost or recovered in the downstream cyanidation operation. Thus it is of interest to know under what conditions gold chloride may stay soluble or co-precipitate along primary (formed in the autoclave) or secondary (formed during neutralization) precipitates. Furthermore, the mode of co-precipitated gold, such as adsorption on iron compounds, like goethite and hematite (Machesky et al., 1990; Nachayev, 1984); substitution in one of the precipitated phases; or finally chemical reduction to metallic state would have consequences in terms of gold recovery."

Gold occurrences have been known in the La Ronge Domain for many year . Mineable reserves have more recently been outlined and there is every prospect of a major gold camp being established in the domain within this decade. The La Ronge Domain lies in the Lower Proterozoic 'Trans-Hudson Orogen' and is part of a collage of Early Proterozoic crust comprising volcanoplutonic arcs, batholiths, associated volcaniclastics and volcanogenic sediments lying between the Superior Craton to the outheast and the reworked Archean basement/Aphebian cover terrain to the northwest. The domain has several lithostructural subdivisions, the most important of whjch , from a gold exploration point of view, is the Central Metavolcanic Belt. This belt is composed dominantly of a range of metavolcanic rocks and gabbroic to granitic intrusives, which geochemically resemble younger subduction-generated 'primitive' arcs developed on oceanic crust. U-Pb zircon geochronology indicates that the arc volcarusm and pre- to late-kjnematic plutonism occurred about 1890 Ma to 1850 Ma ago. The belt has an attained grade of upper greenschist to amphibolite facies and is relatively undeformed , though high strain zones occur locally. Most gold occurrences in the La Ronge Domain have been found in the Star-Waddy Lakes area of the Central Metavolcanic Belt, and in the Sulprude-MacKay Lakes area to the south which is interpreted as a tectonically dismembered part of the main belt. Both tratiformand vein-type gold occurrences are present in the domain; vein-type predominate and form nearly 90 per cent of the occurrences. The stratiform-type occurrences show a regional lithological a sociation with iron-rich sediments within proximal felsic volcanjc sequences. Some vein-type occurrences appear related to brittle fracturing associated with intrusive emplacement (the magmatic-hydrothermal "syn:' and "subvolcanic" veins) and faulting. However, most of the vein-type occurrences exhibit a spatial association with regionalscale ductile shear and other high strain zones, and were probably formed by metamorphichydrothermal processes.

In May 1991, AZSA commissioned a new conventional Cell House. This paper focuses on the major improvements introduced in the design and the construction of the equipment, machinery and control. An effective control system together with good reporting and routine operation has resulted in quality control of the Cell House at the highest possible level. Consequently the monthly current efficiency consistently averages above 93 per cent with a total energy usage of 3000 AC kWh/t of cathode zinc. The new concept for the year 2000 and beyond is introduced.

"A partially-stabilized zirconia powder was prepared by metalorganic precipitation process from technical-grade zirconium oxychloride and the effluent of an acrylic acid plant. The effluent contained low molecular weight carboxylic acids, i. e., acrylic acid and acetic acid. The· developed process is based on the selective precipitation of acrylic acid at suitable pH values by the addition of zirconium oxychloride to the effluent. The resulting precipitate is a precursor that can yield a pure, ultrafine, and partially-stabilized zirconia powder. The evolution of formation of the partially-stabilized zirconia in the present process was investigated using thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction technique. Environmental, technological and cost advantages will make the present process feasible for manufacturing advanced zirconia ceramics.IntroductionIn recent years the superior mechanical, thermal, electrical and chemical properties of stabilized zirconia have become the focus of growing scientific and technological interest, and hence resulted in various structural and functional applications. In mining, water management is an operational necessity, requiring planning and detailed engineering, as well as risk assessment. Yet, the hydrology of streams and aquifers typically extends well beyond the boundaries of mine operations and intersect with environmental and social values. Mine managers often plan, design and assess the impact of water management activities (such as dewatering, excess water disposal and flood management) with a mine site or process specific focus. The challenge is that the impacts are spatial, long-term and complex – and may be cumulative across multiple mine sites. Further, there is usually little consideration of the feedbacks and interactions between surface water, groundwater and catchment hydrology. Failure to understand these processes can lead to poor decisions and increased costs. "In recent years the fact that mining tailings cause serious environmental problems resulted in increasing number of studies about their disposal, storage and usability in various areas. Therefore the new studies about using the tailings for some purposes such as using in shotcrete or producing concrete have been increasing recently. The study is focused on applicability of tailings for producing shotcrete. Under this scope it is considered that mining tailings can bring many advantages in case of that they are used instead of sand, silt or fine aggregate in shotcrete applications. Most important advantages can be listed as decreasing shotcrete cost, decreasing amount if mining tailings to be disposed and the contribution to be provided on sustainable production of sources. The main objective of this study is the investigation of using mine tailing instead of fine aggregate in shotcrete. In this study, 10 shotcrete designs in different proportions were formed, and properties of the mixtures were identified. Then, the experimental results were statistically analyzed, the effects of the amount of the tailing material used on shotcrete properties were presented, and empirical approaches that can be used for the estimation of these properties were developed. INTRODUCTION The disposal of high amount mine tailing on the surface is caused a lot of problems in terms of environmental impact. Unfortunately, it is known that classic disposal techniques such as tailing dam cannot provide a solution these problems. The tailing dams which are usually used in the disposal of mining tailings bring along many problems in terms of cost, environment, and human health. So mine tailings are used in different production such as shotcrete. This technique is becoming increasingly common during recent years. The usability of mine tailings in brick and concrete production instead of cement and fine aggregate has been studied by many studies [1-4]. This situation has been promising for the usability of tailings in shotcrete which is commonly used for ground support especially in tunnels. Shotcrete (sprayed concrete) is applied mainly for construction of tunnels, shafts, renovation works and strengthening of slopes. Main advantage of shotcrete is fast development of strength, which quickly ensures stability of strengthened structure [5]. Shotcrete can be defined as spraying the grout consisting of water, aggregate, cement and optional additive mixture on the desired surface with a compressed air. According to the definition of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), it is the spraying of sprayed grout or concrete on a surface at high speed with air pressure [6]. In recent years, the use of shotcrete for the support of underground excavations is decreased in the mining industry. The design of shotcrete support for underground excavations is a very imprecise process. Strength and pumpability properties of shotcrete are very significant for determining suitable shotcrete design. Flow characteristics of the shotcrete must be determined for pumpability and fluidity of the material."

Introduction The great importance of air warfare during World War II and the introduction of large-scale air transportation and airborne operations created an immediate demand for large quantities of high quality light alloy products. Before this war, the use of magnesium, the lightest structural metal, was barely in the development stage, and considerable research work was needed to overcome difficulties in improving its properties and to attain uniform quality in mass production of magnesium alloy products. The Canadian Bureau of Mines was frequently called upon, by various agencies of the Armed Forces and of the newly established war industries, to examine magnesium alloys that had failed in fabrication or in actual service, and to advise on proper alloys and fabrication methods to be used. Failures in magnesium alloy castings were connected mainly with lack of knowledge of proper founding and surface-protecting techniques. Most of the defects were due to microporosity and faulty heat treatment. To aid the foundry industry, small-scale investigations were started on the effect of various factors in the casting technique in order to improve the quality of the products. These investigations were made in co-operation with representatives of the Armed Forces and the Canadian magnesium industry. This work was later co-ordinated into a broad research programme on magnesium alloys, comprising problems on melting, refining, various casting methods, heat treatment, and testing of properties of standard and special alloys. This research programme? is still in force, and the present paper contains some results of the first series of investigations on magnesium casting alloys carried out at the Experimental Foundry of the Bureau of Mines.

It is the aim of this paper to induce mining engineers to consider dry fill as an engineer- ing material rather than a mass to place in unwanted voids. Dry fill is generally cheap, inert and readily available, but it can still contribute to mining performance. In particular, the choice of the dry fill becomes more critical as stope sizes increase, controlled choked draws are used or pillar recovery introduced. Selection must be initiated from an evaluation of the role of the fill in the mining operation. In most cases the fill must be chosen before quarrying begins and an investigation must be made of available sources and appropriate quarrying methods. Some of the properties of fill are described together with evaluation techniques. A com- parison of placement conditions is limited by the complexities of material flow and degrada- tion: However, field and model tests can aid interpretation in these cases. Examples are given of aspects of dry fill selection and their incorporation in mining design.

Bureau of Mines research on the arc welding characteristics of titanium was initiated in 1948. Little was known about the art except that the easily contaminated metal required more protection from the atmosphere during welding than most other metals. Chambers were designed and built within which titanium could be welded with adequate inert gas protection. Welds were made and their properties studied, and prototype items were made successfully. This report, presenting a resume of the titanium arc-welding experiments undertaken by the Bureau of Mines, demonstrates that the process is successful if conducted under proper conditions and describes the welding of prototypes. INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines&apos; first report on methods of joining titanium covered the subject of spot welding,4/ outlining the conditions necessary for producing spot welds in ductile titanium consolidated by powder metallurgy methods and describing the characteristics of such welds. This report embraces the field of fusion weld-ing of titanium and traces the development of suitable methods and equipment for producing such welds.

There are many measuring methods of grain sizes. Taking into consideration the fine grained materials, one of the existing techniques is measurement of grain size by the Coulter Counter method. This method is based on the measuring the changes of electrolyte resistance during grains flow through the calibrated diaphragm. This method is relatively simple to apply, significantly precise and the results are given quickly. However, the problem is that the measurements are limited by the size of diaphragm. Because of this situation, measurement of grain sizes by this instrument is possible in range from 10% to 60% of diaphragm diameter. This limitation causes the necessity of re-placing diaphragm in case when the measured grain size distribution concerns the material of large size range. In purpose of determining the total grain size distribution, the synthesis of some partial distributions, given for individual grain fractions (with different diaphragm applied), is required. This is possible to do by calculating the mixture of distribution functions, created from the partial distribution functions. Two materials were selected to research: quartzite and glass, which were comminuted in cylindrical crusher, additionally grinded, screened and then analyzed by Coulter Counter for five grain fractions: 0~125 µm, 0~80 µm, 0~56 µm, 0~40 µm and 0~25 µm. For each fraction, five different partial distributions were given (in case of glass ? four), which are the basis for the creating the joined grain composition. To assure the adequacy of the given distribution function, it is necessary to obtain the possibly best approximation of partial distributions. In the work, both the parametric and non-parametric methods of density approximations of investigated random variable. For each grain fraction the approximations were done by three traditional distribution functions: RRB, GSA and log-norm distribution functions and three methods of non-parametric approximation: Gauss kernel, Epanechnikov kernel and orthogonal Fourier series method. Geometallurgical modelling is increasingly being incorporated into mineral resource modelling and estimation as a means of increasing efficiency, decreasing operating costs and reducing risk in mining operations. Traditional geostatistical workflows for geometallurgical modelling face several difficulties, in particular, related to the non-additivity of process response variables, to highly heterotopic data sets and/or to preferential sampling designs, all of which may explain why most attempts to estimate geometallurgical response variables from assay data and mineralogy are still based on statistics and machine learning. The aim of the work presented here is to demonstrate the applicability of geostatistics to estimate copper recovery from copper sulfide ores at the Prominent Hill Iron Oxide Copper-Gold (IOCG) deposit in Australia. As recovery is non-additive, the preferred workflow is the joint estimation of the masses of metal in the feed and in the concentrate, both of which are additive variables. While the mass of metal in the feed can be estimated from abundant online assay analyses, the mass of metal in the concentrate can only be estimated from a very limited number of laboratory-scale batch flotation tests. Traditional approaches to estimating the masses of metal in the feed and in the concentrate, such as simple and ordinary co-kriging, are described and discussed. A modified version of co-kriging is introduced, which incorporates linear relationships between the mean values of the input variables, in addition to a spatial correlation model. Co-kriging with related means is shown to outperform traditional simple and ordinary co-kriging in terms of precision, accuracy and consistency of the estimates, and offers a practical and efficient tool to deal with highly heterotopic and preferential sampling designs.
