"OUR INTEREST in estimates of world reserves of lead and zinc is focussed mainly on the information they give about the sufficiency of metal supplies for the future. However, we soon realize that the estimates can be interpreted in several different ways. Accordingly, it is necessary to have some under-standing of the elements represented by a compilation of world re-serves, and we will start by examining the accuracy of the estimates and what they attempt to measure.Variations in Estimates of the ReservesIf we study the estimates of world reserves that have been published in recent years, we note immenediately that they vary over a considerable range. For example, an article by Shea in 1947 gave world reserves as about 36 million tons of lead and 60 million tons of zinc. Shea did not in elude the United States but I have added to his totals the estimates made by the Bureau of Mines for that country in arriving at the foregoing figures. For approximately the same date, the American Zinc Institute and the Lead Industries Association reported world reserves as about 50 million tons of lead and 77 million tons of zinc. A comparison of the two sets of figures shows a mean variation of 30 per cent. For individual countries the difference between estimates can be even larger. A few years ago the estimate of Canada's reserves made by the United States Bureau of Mines was 7.4 million tons of lead and 14.0 million tons of zinc, while the Gordon Commission reported 1 O. 7 million tons of lead and 26.0 mil-lion tons of zinc. In this case the mean variation was 55 per cent."

In this transition period the mixed arcs of the partly oxidized ore zone had to be treated instead of the free-milling ore that had been treated in the past or the deeper-lying sulphide ores that were to be smelted subsequently under improved economic and technical conditions.]

Cooling crystallization was used to separate iron (III) and nickel (II) from acidic sulfate solution produced by leaching of molybdenum-nickel black shale. The effect of K2SO4 concentration, crystallization temperature, solution pH and crystallization time on recovery of nickel (II) and precipitation of iron (III) was investigated, in order to obtain effective separation of nickel and iron. The optimum parameters determined were as follows: 200 g/L K2SO4, 10 °C crystallization temperature, solution pH of 0.5 and 24 h crystallization. Under these conditions, 97.6% nickel (II) was recovered as K2Ni(SO4)2, 6H2O crystals and only 2.0% of the total iron (III) was precipitated. Recrystallization yielded K2Ni(SO4)2, 6H2O crystals with a purity of 98.4%.

A massive slide at Bingham Canyon wiped out a side of the pit and covered the main haul road in and out of the pit. All pre-slide mine designs and schedules were no longer valid. New designs and schedules needed to be developed quickly to provide management with information regarding the immediate post-slide production potential and the time needed to ramp back up to full production. At the time of the slide, an effort was already underway to convert Bingham?s in-house Medium Term Scheduling Process to MineSight®?s Schedule Optimizer (MSSO). One of the main reasons for doing this was to reduce the time needed to produce Medium Term Schedules at Bingham, which involves a complex shovel-based scheduling approach with shovel productivities based on shovel type and the types of mining cuts to which the shovel is assigned over each planning period. The objective of the schedule was to maximize shovel usage, satisfy mill feed requirements of four SAG mills with variable milling rates, and have flexibility in setting truck constraints. This paper will describe how the new MSSO-based mine scheduling process met the challenge of producing new schedules for Bingham in a minimal amount of time.

"The aim in flotation systems is to control the grade and recovery of the product., numerical method or sampling and analysis is used to achieve this goal. Weakness of measuring instruments, lack of process knowledge, deficiencies in management and data processing in the control of flotation cells, has led the academic and industrial units to use numerical models. In this regard, using the results obtained from the experimental design carried out in the DTP line of Gol Gohar industrial and mining complex, a regression model was developed based on the analysis of variance. To present this model, after variance analysis of factors and interactions, all models were investigated and the final model was created based on 75% of the data. The model was tested with the remaining 25% of the data to confirm the goodness of the fit. The coefficient of determination for training and testing resulted 71% and 74%. Moreover, a feed forward back propagation neural network with different layers and neuron was used to model the results. The best network structure was 6-27-1 and the coefficient of determination for this network was 99% and 98% for training and test respectively. Given the complexity of neural network models and the relatively low accuracy of the regression model, neural network has a priority assuming we have access to a specialist. In addition, the results obtained from neural network can be used as expert systems to control and optimize the flotation cells.INTRODUCTIONThe primary objective of the flotation cell control is to maintain the product's (in this case tailing) recovery and grade, which represents the index for process efficiency and product quality. Continuous estimation of these indexes requires a significant amount of maintenance, and calibration of the continuous analyzers, in order to maintain an acceptable level of accuracy. Weakness of measurement equipment, lack of process knowledge and the general deficiency in management and processing of data in the flotation cell control, will lead industrial units to use smart methods such as mathematical models, regression and neural networks in near future (Panahi, Abdollahzadeh, & Sam, 2010). Artificial neural networks are inspired by the very complex structure of human brain in which millions of nerve cells solve problems or store information by communicating with each other. The duty of neural networks learning. It should be noted that learning in artificial neural networks is limited, and what is practically considered is the computing power of the network. A neural network consists of units called neurons, and has the capacity to handle a set of input data to produce a desired output data set. Each of these input and output data sets can be assumed as a vector (Soltanmohammadi & Noparast, 2006)."

The Pilgrim mine, operated by the Pioneer Gold Mining Co., is 9-1/2 miles west of Chloride in the Pilgrim mining district on the eastern slope of the Black Mountains, or River Range, Mohave County, Ariz. In March 1937, 100 tons of gold ore per day were being mined and milled at the property by a total force of 5i men. Climatic conditions allow year-round operations. Due to present activity in the county there is an ample supply of labor for the requirements of the mine. The Pilgrim is the only producing property within s radius of 6 miles; recently, however, the South Pilgrim Mining Co. has launched a development campaign on claims that adjoin the Pioneer Co. property to the south.

"The major features of the CANMET thermodynamic mine ventilation network program, developed by the Mining and Mineral Process Engineering Department of the University of British Columbia for the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), are described.The program is designed for use by deep Canadian mines in planning ventilation flows where the effects of auto-compression of air, moisture lift work and natural ventilation are significant. Routines to simulate stalled fans and give an optional cost printout have been included in the program.A supplementary plotting program used to simplify data interpretation is also described.The program is described with a test data example of a deep mine. It is a valuable analytical tool which can assist ventilation engineers to simulate many alternative ventilation strategies at a low cost in a very short time.IntroductionCanadian underground mines are becoming deeper and more extensive. The use of more and larger diesel-powered equipment increases the amount of air required to be circulated in these complex systems. These effects, coupled with the increasing unit cost of the energy required for mine ventilation, require that the air is used with maximum efficiency.Optimum airflow distribution can be obtained by using network computer programs enabling engineers to plan future ventilation systems based on quantitative assessments. The programs used for deep mines must make allowance for the change of air density with depth, as the assumption of incompressible flow leads to serious errors. Natural ventilation effects may vary with depth and from part to part of the mine; this must be catered for by the program. The air moisture content changes throughout the circuit and a significant portion of the fan work may be used in removing moisture from the mine; as this work varies directly with the flow, a suitable relationship must be utilized in the program."

THIS paper deals specifically with heading-driving as distinguished from the broader term tunnel-driving. A heading is a pilot or path-finder for the main tunnel. Some headings are complete tunnels in themselves; that is, conditions at times warrant driving a heading the full diameter of the proposed tunnel. A tunnel 10 ft. in diameter might be driven to advantage through a single heading, provided the nature of the material admits, but it usually pays to drive rock tunnels of large diameter through the headingand-bench system. Much depends upon the material, as in soft ground tunnels of much larger diameter are driven in a single heading.

Over the last four years, a major collaboration between CSIRO-MIS, UCT and JKMRC has produced two significant advances in the modelling of comminution. The Universal Comminution Model (UCM) uses parametric SPH/DEM studies of comminution and separation devices to calibrate mathematical models which are suitable for industrial use. The Virtual Comminution Machine (VCM) uses the same computationally intensive techniques based on discrete element modelling (DEM) and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) to directly model any comminution device by combining a CAD file describing the machine design, sophisticated ore characterisation methods and advanced particle scale flow and breakage simulation. The UCM should be useful for process analysis and optimisation of existing equipment and circuits while the VCM should make a major contribution to the evaluation and development of new machines. Progress to date is encouraging with several processes now well described using DEM. This paper also reports on progress towards combining DEM for particles with a realistic slurry model based on SPH for different types of comminution devices. In due course, this combination should allow accurate modelling of particle transport in wet mills to be combined with DEM models.

Process and engineering development of the Warner Zinc Process over the past two decades has proceeded alongside the world-wide collection and analysis of operating and cost data of current processing practices from sulphide ores to refined metals. Study of these data shows that recoveries are dependent on mineralogical characteristics of the sulphide matrix and point to the inadequacy of differential flotation as a tool for preparing feed for smelters. The paid-for return at the mine on the combined metal values in zinc rich sulphide ores rarely exceeds 80% and increasingly runs as low as 50-60%. Surveying the possible alternative ways of improving these performances leads to the conclusion that the Warner Process is the only technology in sight that could meet a target of 90% paid-for recovery and that its development has now reached a point where it can be a fully practicable process for all mixed sulphide ores.

When mechanical ventilation is to supersede the natural ventilation of a mine it is desirable to determine what resistance the mine as a whole offers to the flow of air in order to specify properly the limiting duties of a ventilating fan. The relation of pressure to volume of flow for the mine as a whole may be calculated from experimental data, or it may be determined directly by measurements of volume of flow and the natural draft pressures causing flow; but in both methods the determinations are affected by many variables. With the intention of making a practical application of both methods, a small metal mine in process of development at Butte, Mont., was selected by the writers as the object of experiments planned to compare the mine resistances determined by measurements of natural draft and volume of flow with those calculated from experimental data. Four sets of teats were made with natural draft in October, 1925, December, 1925, April, .1926, and September to December, 1926; the last set consisted of a series of weekly observations. DESCRIPTION OF MINE The mine selected for the experiments was a typical vertical shaft metal mine in the development stage. No stoping had been done, and ventilation was confined to shafts, crosscuts, drifts, and raises. Figure 1 is a dia¬grammatic sketch of the main openings. All were timbered with full sets on approximately 5-foot centers. The shaft compartments were 4 by 4.5 feet, and one in each shaft was partly blocked by staggered manway landings. A pump column in the upcast shaft was discharging about 280 gallons a minute of water at 70° F. from the 1,000-foot level. The drifts were slightly sinuous, but the crosscuts were exceptionally straight and uniform in area; both drifts and crosscuts were about 5 by 7 feet in cross section. Returning the original soil material to the surface of smoothed mine spoils is n practical means of restoring agricultural productivity. Research has established that high-sodium spoils in North Dakota (a) must be covered with about 70 cm of soil material to achieve maximum production; (b) topsoil must be segregated and spread separately from subsoil; (c) potential production depends on the quality of the soil material returned; and (d) erosion and upward salt movement must be controlled for sustained production. Erosion is best controlled by reducing final grades as much as possible during the smoothing process followed by prompt establishment of vegetation. Almost half the nation's cool reserves are in the Northern Great Plains underlying several million hectares of agricultural land. Social pressures to return mined land to agriculture or other productive uses have resulted in recent enactment of state and federal legislation, which is intended to restore productivity to disturbed areas. All such legislation relating to the Northern Great Plains has stipulated that useable soil material be saved and returned to mined land after spoils are smoothed. This requirement immediately raises questions as to how much soil material is needed, what criteria are important in defining useable soil material, how is the soil material to be handled in the earth-moving operations involved, and how can replaced soil material be maintained and revegetation. Scientists at the USDA Northern Great Plains Research Center at Mandan, North Dakota have conducted research on the reclamation of disturbed lands since 1970. Initially this research was designed to identify and characterize those physical and chemical properties of spoils that are most restrictive to plant growth (1). Basically, they found that any properties of spoils that reduced the efficiency of storage and utilization of the limited precipitation received adversely affected plant growth. Thus, in the Northern Plains, revegetation of mined land was found to depend upon the management of factors affecting the availability of water to plants - the same as on unmined land. After the major problems in revegetation were identified, technologies were developed to circumvent the effects of the growth-limiting factors (2). Basically two approaches were identified by which plant growth-restricting properties of spoils could be corrected: (a) various amendments (gypsum, sulfur, Fertilizers, mulches, calcium chloride, etc.) could be applied to spoils to improve their ability to conserve precipitation and provide water for plant growth; or (b) undesirable spoils could be covered with suitable soil materials to reduce or alleviate adverse effects. The latter approach appeared to be more feasible in most instances And is the approach specified in current legislation. The remainder of this paper discusses research on the use of roil materials returned to spoils and summarizes the information obtained.

Spatial and temporal trends in water chemistry in the acidic (pH ~2.6) Berkeley Pit lake, Butte, Montana, can be explained by a newly developed iron-cycling model. Key elements of this model include: subaqueous oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfide minerals by dissolved ferric iron, producing Fe2+ as a by-product; re-oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ in the epilimnion, assisted by A ferrooxidans; precipitation of secondary ferric minerals (schwertmannite, jarosite) in the epilimnion; and replenishment of the Fe3+ concentration of the hypolimnion by seasonal lake turnover and gravitational settling and re-dissolution of ferric precipitates. Pyrite oxidation rates were approximated by using published rate laws and information on the Fe3+ concentrations (~5 mmol) of the Berkeley Pit as a function of depth. The results indicate that subaqueous pyrite oxidation may be releasing as little as 6 + 106 or as much as 600 + 106 moles of H+ each year to the lake; the large range reflects uncertainty in calculation of the specific surface area of pyrite in the flooded pit. This helps to explain the observation that the pH and metal concentrations of the Berkeley Pit have not improved with time since mine flooding began in 1983. Vertical cycling of ferric iron in the pit lake permits pyrite oxidation to continue in deep water, even in the absence of dissolved oxygen. This hypothesis is supported by preliminary stable-isotope data.

L. D. GODSHALL, Everett, Washington: This very interesting paper cannot fail to command the attention of every one who has ever had experience in the amalgamation of gold-ores. I wish to call attention to three very important facts brought out very prominently by the paper, namely: 1. The extent of accumulation of amalgam on copper plates in the form of scale, not removable in the ordinary manner; 2. The change in the relative quantity of the two metals in the amalgam as we. recede from the battery-discharge; 3. The difference in fineness of the bullion obtained from the above-mentioned scale as compared with the bullion from the daily clean-ups. From Mr. Bayliss's figures we find that during the life of the plate in question 14,942 tons of ore were crushed, yielding amalgam of the value of $5.03 per ton, or a total value of $75,158.26. The amalgam accumulating on the plate during this time as scale, we find to have had a value of $8340.54, or $0.558 per ton of ore treated, representing 11.09 per cent. of the total amount of amalgam saved in the ordinary clean-up; or, taking the amalgam saved by daily clean-up plus the amalgam-scale as representing the total saved on this plate, or 100 per cent., we find that the daily clean-up saved 90.01 per cent., while the scale represented 9.99 per cent. The above figures do not include some additional amalgam still adhering to the plate after scale had been removed. We are told that this was not an exceptional case at the Drum Lummon, but that other plates have even yielded a third more than the one in question. The interesting query now comes up, whether this experience at the Drum Lummon is exceptional or universal at all mills; and another question arises, as to how long such an accumulation might continue,

Lithium is the lightest of all metals, but as it deteriorates rapidly in air it has no structural applications. Alloys of lithium that will float upon water can be made with other light metals, but these ultralight alloys are not useful in aircraft production or elsewhere at present. Alone or alloyed with alkaline earth meals, lithium acts as reining agent on molten metals, and as a minor constituent with other metals it imparts characteristic properties to the allay. Lithium compounds have somewhat wider application in commerce than either the metal or the alloys. They are used in the glass, ceramic, chemical, and air-conditioning industries and less extensively in the optical, pharmaceutical, electrical, and textile industries. The United States is the leading producer anti consumer of lithium ores and compounds and apparently has the largest known ore reserves. The value of lithium ores and primary chemical byproducts produced is relatively small, yet the lithium chemical industry yields products worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, owing partly to the high degree of purity demanded by the trade for most finished products and to the low combining weight of lithium. Fortunately, the low-grade ores can now be concentrated economically, and this fact, together with our extensive reserves, assures adequate supplies to meet any reasonable increase in demand. Lithium is listed as essential by both the American and British war agencies, and its military importance may be greatly enhanced.

This paper describes the design and construction of three 7.2 m span access ramp-tunnels to the three level underground car park of the newly redeveloped Top Ryde City Shopping Centre in northern Sydney. The tunnels were to be excavated without significant impact on the overlying Devlin Street, one of the busiest arterial roads in the Sydney metropolitan area and a major link in the Sydney road network. The interpretation of the geological conditions indicated that the tunnels would be driven in a formation of heavily jointed, extremely weathered to fresh Triassic Ashfield shale with some structural features such as dyke, fault and shear zones identified in the available boreholes logs. Both empirical and numerical methods were used to design the tunnels and to predict the ground surface settlements. The design solution, which was influenced by the relatively small scale nature of the work and the current demands on the tunnel construction market, included presupport, initial support and permanent steel fibre reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) lining. The interactions of the driven portals with cut and cover sections and the proposed deep excavation of the new shopping centre were considered at the design development stage and in the construction phase to ensure the safety of the live road. The tunnels have been successfully constructed and are now operational.

During the year 1933, in the Texas Panhandle, 113 oil wells were completed, adding 33,337 bbl. to the daily potential of the field. The field potential on Jan. 1, 1933, as determined by the Texas Railroad Commission, was 149,260 bbl., with a daily allowable production of 41,000 bbl. The potential was raised gradually, until on July 16, 1933, it reached 155,344 bbl. with a daily allowable of 55,000 bbl. This potential and allowable was maintained over a period from July 16, 1933, to Sept. 8, 1933, when the potential was reduced to 136,893, with a daily allowable of 43,727 bbl. Since Sept. 8, 1933, there has been a gradual increase, until on Jan. 1, 1934, the field potential reached 159,740 bbl. with a daily allowable of 42,000 bbl. Of this amount 26,429 bbl. arc "marginal oil" and 2682 bbl. are exempt on account of water. Deepening of Wells During the year 64 wells were deepened, increasing their total oil production 9631 bbl. per day. Of this amount the Gray County granite wash contributed 9256 bbl. from 57 wells. It has been found in many places that the granite wash carries an additional oil pay from 50 to 75 ft. below sea level. "Abstract- In the southern Gaspé Appalachians, gold mineralization is spatially associated with the Acadian dextral strike-slip Grand Pabos-Restigouche fault system. Two different structurally-controlled gold prospects, the Lac Arsenault and the Saint-André-de-Ristigouche, are described to unravel the genesis of gold mineralization in this part of the Canadian Appalachians.At the Lac Arsenault gold prospect, gold mineralization consists of Au-As-Pb-Zn-Cu-(Ag) polymetallic fault-filled quartz veins with laminated textures emplaced in brittle-ductile sinistral X shear fractures. Mineralized veins are hosted by Middle Ordovician graywacke of the Arsenault Formation, belonging to the Dunnage Zone, the Early Paleozoic oceanic domain of the Appalachians. Terrigeneous rocks of the Arsenault are regionally metamorphosed at the lower greenshist facies and the mineralized veins are included in a zone of Fe-carbonate alteration.The Sb-Au-As mineralization of the Saint-André-de-Ristigouche gold prospect, in the southwestern Gaspé area, comprises extension veins in the extension direction emplaced in brittle conditions. Mineralized veins are hosted by calcilutite and laminated silty and argillaceous limestone of the Early Silurian part of the White Head Formation, which belongs to the Gaspé Belt, the Middle Paleozoic successor basin in the Gaspé Appalachians. Metamorphic grade of the White Head Formation in the southwestern Gaspé area is very low, but the gold mineralization is included in a zone of hydrothermal propylitic alteration which includes two Cu-skarn mineral occurrences. The Lac Arsenault gold prospect has many characteristics of "greenstone-hosted quartz-carbonate vein" deposits whereas the southwestern Gaspé area, which includes the Saint-André-de- Ristigouche gold prospect, shows affinities with the geological setting of sediment-hosted gold deposits (Carlin-like deposits). The two gold prospects are controlled by the Grand Pabos- Restigouche fault system but they were not emplaced at the same level in the crust. Acadian strikeslip fauting played a major role in their respective genesis in providing channelways for ore-bearing fluids. The recognition of the analogy of the geological setting of the southwestern Gaspé area with that of Carlin-like mineralization gives new ideas for exploration in the area and elsewhere in the Appalachians.Résumé - Dans le sud des Appalaches de la Gaspésie, on trouve des minéralisations aurifères spatialement associées au système de failles de coulissage dextre acadien de Grand Pabos-Restigouche. Deux indices très différents, Lac Arsenault et Saint-André-de-Ristigouche, sont décrits pour évaluer la genèse des minéralisations aurifères à contrôle structural de cette partie des Appalaches canadiennes. Au Lac Arsenault, la minéralisation aurifère comprend des veines polymétalliques à Au-As-Pb- Zn-Cu-(Ag) en remplissage de failles. Ces veines à texture laminaire se retrouvent dans des zones de cisaillement fragiles-ductiles senestres de type X. Les veines minéralisées sont encaissées dans les grauwackes d’âge Ordovicien moyen de la Formation d’Arsenault appartenant à la zone de Dunnage, le domaine océanique du Paléozoïque précoce des Appalaches canadiennes. Les roches terrigènes de l’Arsenault sont métamorphisées régionalement au faciès inférieur des schistes verts et les veines aurifères sont dans de larges zones d’altération dolomitique (Fe-carbonate).Dans le sud-ouest de la Gaspésie, la minéralisation à Sb-Au-As de Saint-André-de-Ristigouche est dans des veines d’extension comprises dans la direction d’extension et mises en place dans des conditions de déformation fragile. Stability in Exxon's Colony Pilot Mine in the Piceance Creek Basin, Colorado has been monitored by periodic pillar stress-determinations End roof-to-floor convergence measurements since 1971. Pillar failure has caused marginal stability in some areas of the mine. Measurements taken during the process of failure provided valuable information on the in-situ pillar strength and long-term behavior of the mine structure. Four pillars were reinforced by 32 mm (1-1/4 in) diameter tensioned grouted bolts to increase long-term stability in the northern area of the mine. Stability of this area is necessary because future plans envision its use as an exit/access and ventilation exhaust. Computer analyses were performed to help evaluate the effect of pillar reinforcement on long-term stability. Results indicate that bolting is particularly useful in stabilizing failed pillars, but its effects are significant only in the immediate area of the pillar.
