Royal Nickel Corporation is developing the Dumont Nickel Project, a large nickel sulphide deposit located near the town of Amos, Québec. The nickel occurs as pentlandite, heazlewoodite, and awaruite. The relatively low grade ore can be processed to a very high grade nickel concentrate, containing 29% Ni. The absence of copper and precious metals in the ore renders this concentrate amenable to processing by dead roasting in a fluid-bed roaster and smelting in an electric furnace to produce ferronickel for sale to stainless steel producers. Laboratory test work and conceptual engineering design was completed to demonstrate the amenability of Dumont concentrate to produce ferro-nickel.

Water-borne blast pressures from confined blasts were recorded as part of a submerged blasting program in Florida for channel deepening. The blasting was confined within the rock floor by stemming. Shot patterns of stemmed borings were recorded, as were two open-water shots. One hole of one shot was not confined properly, which allowed comparison of confined and a poorly confined larger charge weights per delay. The pressure data were intended to gain information on typical pressure measures from the rock removal program relative to impacts on marine organisms. Water-borne pressures from actual confined, rock-removal shots validate the hypothesis of lessened impacts to aquatic and marine biota.

Paste back-fill technology is gaining rapid acceptance in the Canadian mining industry. The authors were able to work on four different mining sites employing paste technology in their operation. In each site the paste hackfll is prepared with very fine tailings containing significant amounts of sulphur minerals. The research program involved laboratory testing on samples prepared in the laboratory, on control samples obtained at the hackfilll plant during pouring into the stopes and on core samples obtained from drilling in backfilled stopes. The laboratory testing provided detailed knowledge of the mechanical behavior of the paste backfill. The need for a means of measuring the in-situ mechanical properties of the backfill became clear. A review of various trials published in literature and an evaluation of available technology suggested the Cambridge Self-boring Pressuremeter. A first field campaign confirmed the efficiency and dependability of this instrument leading to the conclusion that it offers a very good method for the in-situ measurement of paste backfill properties.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Rip Van Winkle mine, which is about 25 miles northwest of Elko, Nev., from October 1942 to February 1943 to determine possible resources of lead-zinc-silver ore. The property is owned by the Rip Van Winkle Consolidated Mining Co., which maintains its offices in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ore was discovered in the 1860's, and active mining was carried out intermittently until 1939, when the Rip Van Winkle Consolidate Mining Co. acquired the property. This company equipped and developed the mine, erected a flotation mill, and operated on a 65-ton daily basis. The ore is mined from veins, mineralized faults, and replacement deposits of wall rock. The country rock comprises cherty shale, granite, porphyry, intrusive breccia, and breccia, and brecciated shale. Mining operations were carried down to the 700-foot level. The Bureau of Mines drilled 5 diamond-drill holes, totaling 1,084 feet, from the 600- and 700-foot levels, excavated a 250-foot surface trench, and took 26 underground samples. The ensuing sections note the location and physical features of the district, mention the equipment, and specify the property and ownership. The history of the mine is briefed, and the geology, mine workings, and plant are described. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is summarized and supplemented in detail by assay maps, logs of diamond-drill holes in appendix A, and by tables of sample analysis in appendix B.

"In most of the coal washeries, Dense Medium Cyclone’s (DMC) are deployed to treat coarse coal fraction in the range of 50-0.5 mm. DMC’s are very popular due to its ability of high tonnage, ease of operation and effective separation at high near-gravity material (NGM) in feed coal. The ease or difficulty of washing is merely depending on the NGM fraction present in run of mine coal. However, the quantitative effect of NGM on DMC performance was not explored in the literature. Hence, in this investigation, the influence of NGM on DMC performance is focused. With the help of synthetically prepared coal mixture, the effect of NGM mass fraction on separation efficiency is studied in three different approaches. Firstly, by increasing the NGM coal fraction systematically from low to as high as possible; second by varying the distribution of NGM coal; and third by varying distribution of particles lying just above and below the near-gravity zone. Washability studies are also carried out to establish the theoretical yield for the prepared synthetic mixtures. Pilot-plant experiments are carried out in a 4-inch DMC with 1.4 operating separation density treating coal in the size range of 4 - 0.5 mm. From results, the partition curves are constructed by both density and size wise distributions. It is observed that at higher NGM coal fraction i.e above 60%, the performance of DMC is very poor with significant coal particles misplacement. In second approach with increased distribution at higher density fractions, the separation efficiency reduces. In third series the distribution of fraction in near-gravity zone doesn’t much effect the separation except the shift in separation density. It is observed that smaller size (-0.5 mm) coal particle having high NGM content seems have a profound effect on DMC performance leading to significant fines misplacement to wrong products."

"Summary This paper describes a case of a directional pile installation conducted from an existing oil platform in the Caspian Sea, offshore Baku. Results are presented for 660 mm outer diameter (660 mm OD) conductor piles. Each conductor was equipped with a beveled aluminum toe for directional impact driving and was driven through a 710 mm casing using a Delmag 100–13 diesel hammer and a chaser pile. The 710 mm casings were preinstalled to a depth of 75 m below mud line (75 m BML). The longest impact driven conductor pile on the project was 456 m at end of drive, and reached the terminal depth of 295 m BML.Soil conditions consisted of soft to stiff silty clay to a depth of 30 m BML, underlain by stiff clay to 96 m BML, very stiff silty clay to 200 m BML, and very stiff to hard clay down to 300 m BML.In order to assess the maximum stresses in the conductors and check the performance of the hammer, the driving of each conductor was monitored using a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA). The hammer fuel setting was adjusted based on the PDA outputs to ensure the conductors were not overstressed during installation. All driving and monitoring operations were carried out from the drill floor.The conductor piles drove easier than anticipated but in the direction predefined by the pre-cut angle of the beveled aluminum toe. The driving system performance was good. Post driving, the SRD were analyzed by either the global method analysis, using WEAP, or by the CAPWAP program.To detect any collision between the conductor being driven and the adjacent wells in production, the well heads were monitored in real time with high sensitivity accelerometers. These accelerometers were connected to an alarm system on the drill floor, triggering a siren and a strobe light should a collision be detected by an abnormal increase of the peak acceleration.IntroductionThe world longest directional impact driven pile was installed in year 2005. The operation was carried out from an offshore production, drilling, and quarters (PDQ) platform located about 120 km east of Baku, in the Caspian Sea.The platform foundation consists of driven piles and 24 slots were available for drilling the wells to the reservoir, located about 3800 m below sea floor. Each slot was fitted with a casing, 710 mm in diameter, running from the top of the jacket to a depth of about 75 m BML (Figure 1). Oil production started in 1997 and by the end of 2003, 14 wells were in operation; 10 slots were therefore still available, either for oil production or for water injection. However, due to larger than expected settlement of the platform, drilling of additional wells was put on hold. After further investigation, experts concluded the settlement was due to an alteration in the mechanical properties of the bearing strata supporting the foundation piles. This alteration was due to either excess soil material transportation, or soil fracture by the drilling fluids (mud), when drilling the first wells. With only 14 wells in production, out of 24 possible, the owner faced a new dilemma: to drill, or not to drill new wells?"

The Bureau of Mines conducted research on substitute brazing filler alloys with properties similar to those of silver filler alloys in an effort to conserve silver and reduce hazards from cadmium emissions. Experimental work was conducted first on the commercial silver brazing alloys BAg-I, BAg-la, BAg-2, and BAg-3 to establish criteria for evalu-ating the substitute alloys. Properties investigated included the wettability of copper, brass, and steel substrates, and the strength of joints made with the filler alloys. A series of experimental alloys containing 50 to 60 pct Cu, 20 to 28 pct Mn, and 17 to 30 pct Zn was prepared and evaluated, together with Cu-Mn-Zn alloys with 5 pct Pb or 2 pct Ni. Wetting properties and joint strengths were not as good as those for silver filler alloys, and the high application temperatures reduced the copper and brass base metal strengths. However, experimental alloys containing 70 pct Cu, 15 to 20 pct Mn, and 10 to 16 pct Sn had wetting and strength properties approaching those of the silver filler alloys. The application temperatures for these alloys were high-er than those for silver fillers, but not as high as those for the Cu-Mn-Zn alloys. With the Cu-Mn-Sn alloy fillers, copper alloy joint members are less deteriorated by recrystallization than when applying Cu-Mn-Zn alloys. The Cu-Mn-Sn system has potential for further devel-opment as a substitute brazing alloy system, particularly if the melting temperature can be reduced by the addition of other elements without decreasing the ductility and wetting.

The geometry and morphology of a set of low-angle fractures around a stope in a deep Witwatersrand gold mine are explained in terms of extension fractures forming under variable conditions of stress. Primary extension fractures (E1) form some distance ahead of an advancing stope along the s1, s2 plane. With stope advance, a couple of these fractures end up in a stress regime conducive to transpressional shear and a secondary set of extension fractures(E2) is formed at a high angle to the primary fractures. i.e. at a low angle to the stope. As the E2 fractures are undermined, they migrate into a stress regime of transtensional shear and a third set of extension fractures (E3) may develop between E2 fractures. These have sigmoidal shapes, being parallel to the E2 fractures at the E2 discontinuity where s3 is negative, and curved through the unfractured rock between E2 fractures where s3 is positive at the instant of fracturing. The fractures all display fractographic features characteristic of dynamic extension failure with striae indicative of the direction of rupture propagation and the local, instantaneous orientation of s1.

Occasionally, in the design of deep foundations for a structure, a single deep foundation element may be used to support a building column. The most common type of element used in such cases is a drilled shaft (also referred to as a drilled pier, caisson, or bored pile). However, as installation capabilities have improved, large diameter augercast piles are increasingly more common. While drilled shafts and augercast piles differ significantly in construction methods, in the eyes of the International Building Code (IBC), both are treated as cast-in-place deep foundations and must comply with many of the same code provisions. Deep foundations are required to be braced such that lateral stability is provided in all directions, however isolated, cast-in-place elements that have a diameter (D) of at least 2-feet and a length (L) not more than 12 times the diameter can be an exception. In response to the concerns raised by some member professionals, the Deep Foundations Institute’s (DFI) Augered Cast-in-Place Pile and Drilled Displacement Pile Committee took a closer look at the code and its applications, the historical development of the code language through the years and performed analytical modeling to evaluate the impact of this ratio on a pile’s stability. The question is whether the limiting ratio included in the IBC 2018 code provisions is justified, or whether different criteria should be used to determine when isolated deep foundation members are allowed.

Durante 2017, a operação do AF#2 da Ternium Argentina exigiu alterações da basicidade binária em uma ampla faixa entre 2.0 a 2.7 e no teor de MgO. Esta faixa de trabalho motivou o estudo das propriedades metalúrgicas do sinter e sua interação com outros componentes materiais da carga do Alto-Forno. Além disso, foi testado e analisado a influência de duas qualidades diferentes de granulado. Para entender os efeitos da composição química, um conjunto de testes de redução-desintegração foram desenvolvidos. Aliando com perfis isotérmicos (ISO 4696-1), perfis variáveis de temperatura e composição de gás, com intuito de simular a redução no AF. As propriedades sob alta temperatura também foram avaliadas por meio de ensaios de amolecimento e fusão, compondo a carga sinter, pelota e minério granulado. Utilizando amostras de sinter de diferentes basicidades e teores de MgO. Os resultados obtidos e sua influência no comportamento dos altos-fornos são analisados no presente trabalho.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines research was to determine the technical feasibility of direct sulfuric acid digestion of Florida land-pebble phosphate matrix. Preliminary tests in a continuous digestion circuit showed that 92 to 96 percent of the P2O5 contained in the matrix was extracted, while the P.05 concentration in the product acid ranged from 21 to 30 percent. The waste filter cake contained about 1 percent P205 and up to 18 percent water. These sandy compact filter cakes, comprised mostly of quartz and gypsum, appeared to be suitable for backfilling and reclamation of mined lands.

Located in the state of Pará, Brazil, the Sossego copper and gold mine consists of a heterogeneous geological deposit. Its complexity derives from the hydrothermal alteration, the ore-forming event, which modified the host rocks, such as granite, and metamorphosed volcanic rocks into several mineral assemblages. Different mineral assemblages have led to differences in abrasiveness. A few Bond abrasion tests conducted during the mine feasibility study did not provide a robust abrasiveness database, thus the variation of physical properties for some mineralisation host rocks was not possible. Although several test methods may be used to determine ore abrasiveness, the Bond method is the one most commonly used in the mining industry. Despite being simple to carry out, this test method has certain limitations as to particle size and the amount of ore sample required, which often makes it difficult or even impossible to apply in the early stages of a project and in geometallurgical studies. The Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées (LCPC) test may provide an alternative, as it requires a smaller amount of fine-grained material. This study aimed to provide data on wear properties of various ore types from Sossego mine using the LCPC method. It included validation for 40 different ore samples using the Bond test as a benchmark. The results showed good correlation, indicating it may be possible to use the LCPC test as an alternative to the Bond abrasion test. A high abrasiveness index was found for acid metavolcanic rock, confirming the results observed in Sossego mill’s operating database, pointing to a mineralogical drive to amorphous quartz. "The Precambrian rocks of southeastern Manitoba contain a great variety of mineral deposits, including gold, chromium, copper, nickel, lithium, tin, beryllium, tungsten, and molybdenum. Although considerable interest has been shown from time to time in each of these types of deposit, production to date has been almost entirely in gold. This has had a value of about $26,000,000 and has been derived chiefly from the San Antonio mine, with lesser amounts from the Central Manitoba, Gunnar, Beresford Lake, Ogama-Rockland, Diana, and other properties.Most of the deposits lie within volcanic and sedimentary rocks or within basic intrusions cutting these rocks. These favourable rocks occur in several areas, which have been given local names and are separated from one another by large bodies of granite (Fig. 1).In general, the several areas are characterized by different types of mineralization. Thus, the Rice Lake-Beresford Lake area contains numerous gold deposits and has yielded almost all the gold production to date; the Maskwa River, Euclid Lake, and Oiseau River areas are, on the whole, characterized by deposits of chromium, copper, nickel, lithium, tin, and beryllium; and in the West Hawk Lake area there are deposits of gold, tungsten, molybdenum, and lithium.As might be expected in a district containing such a variety of mineral deposits, the structural conditions controlling their deposition also vary greatly. It is, accordingly, convenient to discuss the structural geology and mineral deposits of each of the more important areas separately."

"We present an analysis of the mechanical properties of coal specimens from various coalfields and seams in South Africa. Our database comprises of 1800 test results from uniaxial and triaxial compression tests, as well as indirect tensile strength tests, which we collected from the various mining houses and research agencies in the country. We inspected the database for possible errors and present a brief description of the verification procedure in the paper.In the analysis, we reveal that the collected samples of strength and elastic properties of South African coals can be represented by single lognormal or normal distributions with only few outliers. This finding indicates that the samples realistically approximate the population of mechanical coal properties in the country and may suggest that the properties are randomly distributed. Significant coalfield- or seamspecific trends for the mechanical properties of coal are not clearly discernible from our data.Typical coefficients of variation for the individual mechanical properties range between 25-50 % on a country-wide and seam-specific level of analysis. Average uniaxial compressive strength values, however, are closely clustered for all seams. A comparison with data available from international coal strength studies show the distinct difference between South African coals and seams in countries of the Northern Hemisphere, where differences in the average coal seam strength are more pronounced.We observe that the number of specimens whose failure mode is influenced by the presence of natural discontinuities reduces drastically with the application of very small confining pressures to the specimens. Further, the strength-reducing influence of discontinuities diminishes with increasing confining pressures."

"Constructed between 1939 and 1945, the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct is 45 miles (72 km) long. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) first identified suspected areas of leakage from the RWBT in the 1990s. A $1 billion project is underway to mitigate the leakage through the construction of a bypass tunnel around the area of most severe deterioration, a 2.5-mile (4 km) section located beneath the Hudson River. Two shafts, 800 and 900 feet (244 and 274 m) below the ground surface, are being sunk to support the tunnel construction. The deep shafts will be subjected to high groundwater pressures and have been designed to accommodate multiple tunnel portals. This paper discusses the engineering decisions and analyses leading up to the final design. INTRODUCTION Project Background The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) provides over 1 billion gallons (3.7 billion liters) of water to over 9 million residents of the City of New York and surrounding communities each day. This water is stored in upstate reservoirs and conveyed to the City via a system of aqueducts and tunnels. Water is delivered to the City almost completely by gravity and consists of three systems: the Croton, the Catskill, and the Delaware. The Delaware System is the largest of the three and supplies between 50% and 70% of the City’s daily water supply. In the 1990s, the NYCDEP discovered leaks in the central 45-mile-long (72 km) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct known as the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT). The leaks release between 15 and 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million liters per day) and are concentrated in two areas near Wawarsing and Roseton, New York. As part of the Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel and Wawarsing Repairs Project (Bypass Tunnel Project), the leaks in the Wawarsing area will be repaired by grouting from inside the existing RWBT, and the leaks in the Roseton area will be mitigated by constructing a bypass tunnel parallel to and 1,750 feet (533 m) north of the leaking portion of the existing RWBT. Two deep shafts will be excavated on either side of the Hudson River: Shaft 5B in Newburgh and Shaft 6B in the Town of Wappinger."

"Copper-ammonia-thiosulfate?leaching of gold has been researched for several decades as a potential alternative to cyanidation. However, this technology has not yet been applied commercially due to many challenges such as complex solution chemistry, reagent degradation and losses, system instability with losses of precious metals and difficulties in gold recovery from the leachate. Progress has been made at CSIRO in tackling some of these challenges including:better understanding and control of the leach conditions to minimise reagent losses whilst maximising gold recovery use of strong base ion exchange resins to recover the gold strategies to deal with polythionates that adsorb competitively with gold on ion exchange resins development and evaluation of process flow sheets.As a result there has been increased interest from the gold industry and renewed activities to develop thiosulfate based processes for gold recovery. One application area, which has been developed to the point of piloting, is the treatment of gravity gold concentrates using a copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach with ion exchange recovery of the gold thiosulfate. Electronic detonators have been used on a trial basis for over a decade, and found more recent application in production blasting as well. The relative merits of these detonators and their applicability are outlined through examples from actual blasting operations. They offer unprecedented flexibility in the design of mass blasts and in control of vibration and blast-induced damage. However, the drive towards replacing the pyrotechnic detonators by electronic ones in general could prove to be counter productive without a re-examination of prevailing blasting practices. In fact, such an approach tends to blur the tremendous potential of the electronic detonators in redefining many standard blast designs and practices.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a dewatering technique for treating wastewater that was tested on waste slurry from a commercial tile company in Alabama. Raw wastewater samples were pretreated with 10 Ib calcium chloride and 10 lb Wyoming bentonite per 1,000 gal of slurry. After pretreatment, polyethylene oxide (PEO) at dosages varying from 0.05 to 0.20 lb per 1,000 gal was mixed with the waste slurry, forming strong, tough floes that were separated from the clarified water using a trammel. The flocculated slurry was dewatered to a consistency that could be handled for subsequent disposal in a landfill. The clarified water quality was equivalent to that of the company's present treatment system.

The function of a thickener is to optimise and accelerate the process of gravity sedimentation. The desired end product (be that maximised concentrated solids or clarified liquid) determines how the thickener is designed and operated.Significant internal research, together with extensive on-site piloting, by Outotec has resulted in the determination that the application of the appropriate amount and type of shear to hindered settling aggregates can result in a substantial change to the sedimentation process. A new patented technology, called shear enhanced thickening (SET), has been developed. SET results in considerable design implications for full-scale thickeners, including a substantial reduction in required footprint and/or significant increases in underflow density.The development of SET, combined with laboratory and pilot scale verification, will be discussed along with the introduction of this technology to a number of full-scale thickeners. Low Strain Pile Integrity Testing has been used in India since 1990’s and several have tried to demonstrate the utility and benefits of this method. However, use of this technology was limited till 1998 as not enough data maybe was not available to justify its use and application on major infrastructure and real estate projects. The first author has done significant work in this method resulting in its use in practically all sectors of the industry that use concrete bored pile foundations as a supporting element. The paper explains various signal enhancers or modifiers involved in processing of low strain test data and its implication on the final output. It also describes how the method can lead to abuse or can provide poor interpretation if incorrectly used. The current effort is to demonstrate that data collection and evaluation becomes complex with changes in soil stratum and pile profile. The paper highlights the present testing practices and provides a guideline for classification of pile integrity into few simple categories in Indian context rather than writing complex interpretations.
