The commitment is aligned with all three elements of the triple bottom line: people and society, ecosystems and environment, and financial and economic systems. These commitments are carried forward by the firm?s executives, managers, and operational sites, and are evident in materials posted on the company?s public website. These materials include a formal sustainability report prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines (GRI, 2006), a report that outlines key SD challenges and progress toward the GRI targets, and a delineation of risks and opportunities outlined in the firm?s Form 10-K and Annual Report. In keeping with its commitments to SD targets, our client wished to consider SD issues in its decision processes for facility expansion or new projects. The company engaged CH2M HILL to meet this goal, based on working relationships established through existing contracts and CH2M HILL?s leading capabilities in sustainable solutions.

EAF slag chemistry and its control have been recognized as important in producing quality steel at a low price for a number of decades_ EAF steel producers make lime and dolomite additions to furnaces, controlling the CIS ratios and sulfur pickup from the steel. Existing phase diagram data at 1600°C for CaO, MgO, FeO, SiO2, and Al2O3 was used to write a computer model optimizing slag chemistry for slag foaming and reduced refractory wear. The model, its development, and its use in an industrial steelmaking environment will be discussed along with how the model can improve energy efficiency. The importance of EAF mass balance to account for critical materials like Si in scrap and refractory wear using the model will also be emphasized_

The paper describes the design development and construction of bored piles at Pindersfield Hospital, Wakefield, U.K. The piles were of monopile type. Monopile is the term used to describe piles which are constructed without pile caps so that the superstructure columns bear directly on the pile top. Pile geotechnical design was developed from the Site Investigation data and testing of two preliminary piles. Final design philosophy is described. Pile structural design was developed from the loadings applied by the superstructure, and the requirements, tolerances and limitations of monopile construction techniques. Construction was closely controlled in order to achieve a ?right first time? result. The conclusion gives a critique of the system and its value.

The surface tensions of lead and lead alloys with very low concentrations of silver, tin and copper were measured by the sessile-drop method. The enrichment of silver and tin in the surface of liquid lead alloys at temperatures close to the freezing-point of lead was confirmed, which may explain the unusual behaviour of small amounts of silver and tin in lead bulllion during the sulphur-drossing step of the refining process. From the limited data available copper also appears to concentrate at the surface of the liquid alloy

"Electron spin resonance (ESRJ and cytotoxicity measurements were made on newly fractured silica to examine specifically the role of the fracture-induced, silicon-based radicals (Si· and SiO·) and silica-generated hydroxyl (·OH) radicals in the mechanism of the cell membrane damage by silica. The concentration of the Si· and SiO · radicals was controlled through decay processes, thermal annealing, and boiling, while that of the ·OH radicals was varied by using catalase, superoxide dismutase, KMnO, Na;iSeO:y ascorbic acid, and metal ions, and monitored via ESR spectroscopy. The dust's cytotoxicity potential was evaluated by measuring the silica-induced hemolysis and also by determining lipid peroxidation (using linoleic acid). From the comparison of hemolysis and ESR results it is deduced that the radicals play little or no role in the silica-induced hemolysis. However, the lipid peroxidation data indicate that the radicals might be involved in the initiation of an oxidative chain reaction leading to the macrophage membrane damage through lipid peroxidation. INTRODUCTIONThe biochemical mechanism of quartz-related pneumoconiosis is still not fully understood. It is believed, nevertheless, that one event of primary importance is the perturbation of cell membranes by the dust particles (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Shi et al., 1989; Summerton et al., 1977). The ensuing cell: membrane damage unleashes certain lytic enzymes resulting in additional cell injury and eventual fibrosis (Nolan et al., 1981; Summerton et al., 1977). Thus considerable effort is currently being made toward the understanding of the processes by which quartz particles disrupt the membrane of a red blood cell (RBC) or a pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM). A simple but important method of evaluating the membrane damage potential of a dust is the hemolysis test (Harington et al., 1971). Even though this test is used routinely for screening dusts for their cytotoxicity potential, the biochemical mechanisms underlying the cell lysis by many dusts, including quartz, is still controversial (Kilroe-Smith, 1974; Singh and Rahman, 1987), and this provided us the impetus for the present undertaking."

"In this study, Co-Cr-Mo alloys were produced using a mixture of Co304, Cr203 and Mo03 powders with Al powders by a Self-propagating high temperature synthesis process. SHS is a process of material synthesis that has revealed a number of reactants combinations capable of much higher energy release than conventional explosives. Al203 is added to the mixture to decrease the adiabatic temperature of the system. The thermodynamic simulations and the calculations of adiabatic temperature were examined with FactSage 6.2. In the SHS experiments, different Co304/ Cr203/Mo03 ratios were examined, and their effects on the metal recovery and alloy compositions were carried out. The samples were characterized by using chemical analysis, XRD, XRF and SEM/EDS techniques.IntroductionSelf Propagating High Temperature Synthesis (SHS) has significant advantages compared to the high technology furnace applications, such as very short processing time, simple operation, low energy requirement and low cost [l, 2]. In a SHS process, the ignition starts the combustion and propagates throughout the reactant mixture yielding the desired product. However, the disadvantages of the process such as inhomogeneous or unreacted products due to undesirable reaction rates needs to be overcome by changing some parameters such as ignition temperature, particle size, additive, atmosphere etc. [3, 4]. This work aims to establish a scientific and engineering background in the production of some cast Co-Cr-Mo master alloys via SHS (Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis) metallurgy which is attractive process technique regarding fast and low-cost production ability of cast alloys."

STRETCHING from New York southwestwardly to Georgia is a great range of hills and mountains consisting of pre-Palaeozic schists, slates, and gneissic and granitoid rocks, known locally by many different names; in Pennsylvaniaa as the South mountains, the Berkshire or Durham and Reading hills, and in Virginia and farther south as the Blue ridge. To the northwest of this range lies the " Great Valley," underlain by Lower Silurian limestones, and known as the Lehigh valley, Cumberland valley, Shenandoah valley, valley of Eastern Tennessee and Georgia and by other local names, but all these are parts of one valley, geologically and geographically continuous from New Jersey to Georgia. Lying upon and along the northern flank of this range of mountains, and dipping northwestwardly under the limestone of the valley, is the Potsdam formation (Primal or No. 1 of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey), which consists of sandstone or conglomerate overlain by slates. The latter are sometimes arenaceous and occasionally are replaced in part by sandstone. This formation varies from a few feet to several hundred feet in thickness. At the outcrop the slates are completely decomposed, oxidized or disintegrated, forming a belt of clay several hundred feet wide occupying the interval between the outcroppings of the sandstone and limestone. This clay-belt includes a more or less continuous series of iron-ore (brown hematite) deposits, which have been, and still are, extensively worked. The belt is more or less continuously mineralized with iron throughout its length, and hundreds of large deposits of ore have been developed and worked, producing many millions of tons of ore.

Many persons hold the opinion that the metal indus- ries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requir- ing not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. So wrote Georgius Agricola in 1556. He could have been espousing the sentiments of an indus- trial archaeologist investigating mining sites in 1986. South Australia has a very rich legacy from its industrial past-especially in the area of its mining history. Industrial archaeology, which is part of the broad field of archaeology, is concerned with the material and documentary remains of this industrial past. This includes the products and processes of manufacturing, industrial, technolog- ical and engineering activity and their relation- ships to people and the environment. `Archaeology' immediately conjures up the image of excavations in Greece or Eygpt. Excavation however is only a part of archaeological methodology. Industrial archaeology utilizes documentary historical rec- ords combined with field survey techniques (both above and below ground) to create a composite picture of the past. Interest in our recent past has burgeoned in Australia in the last few years. This interest manifests itself in many ways-the unprecedented popularity of Australiana and col- lecting, the plethora of Australian historic films, the growth of the National Trust, local historical societies and genealogical research. Fortunately these trends have been reflected in academic and legislative circles. Various univers- ities, institutes of technology and colleges of advanced education run courses in aspects of cul- tural resource management and conservation of the historic environment. These courses are com- prised of archaeology, architecture, geography, his- tory, materials conservation, museum studies, and national parks management and planning.

The anisotropy of fracture and slip, that is, the brittleness and ductility of the beryllium single crystal, is characteristic also of po1ycrystalline beryllium in which the grains are oriented in a preferred manner. Beryllium with grain orientations resulting from hot working either unidirectionally or bidirectionally is ductile or brittle in directions given by the anisotropy and orientation of the grains. Textures developed from various hot-working sequences are given, and tensile results are correlated with textures. Not only texture, but fine grain size is necessary for obtaining high tensile elongation. Ultimate tensile strength and elongation are both correlated with grain diameter. Of particular interest is the case in which unusually high tensile elongations of 30 to 40 pct are obtained when basal planes are oriented to carry THE beryllium crystal (of nominal purity) is probably unique among metals with respect to its unusually acute anisotropy of slip and fracture. While extensive slip can occur on the system (1010) [ll20] starting at about 19,000 psi, the (0001) plane is particularly vulnerable to fracture at 4500 psi or less. Zinc ranks third and lead fourth in world nonferrous metal conumption. In 1972 the free world consumed 3,333,000 mt of refined lead and 4,422,000 mt of refined zinc. The lead tonnage was divided into the following end uses: storage batteries (42%), lead allows (7%), pigments and chemicals (11%), cable sheathing (9%), gasoline additives (13%), pipes and sheets (8%), and miscellaneous uses (10%). The corresponding distribution of zinc uses in 1972 was galvanizing (39%), die casting (26%), brass (15%), rolled zinc (8%), oxide excluding American Process zinc made directly from concentrate (6%), and other uses (6%). The pattern of usage of lead and zinc varies considerably from country to country. During 1972 in the USA 49% of refined lead was consumed in storage batteries, 19% in gasoline additives, and only 3% in cable sheathing, whereas in the United Kingdom 28% of the lead was consumed in batteries, 14% in cable sheathing, and 14% in gasoline additives. For zinc the major US uses were die casting (41%) and galvanizing (37%), with about 3% consumed as rolled zinc; corresponding usages in the same applications in France were 12, 28 and 28% and in Australia 12, 67, and 3%, respectively. The Salobo Project will be the first Vale operation to use an HPGR mill to process copper-gold ore. The mine is located in Para state, southeast of the Amazon region in Brazil. The circuit was designed to treat 12 million metric tons per year of finely disseminated sulphide ore with high hardness. The comminution circuit comprises a gyratory primary crusher, secondary crushing utilizing two cone crushers, two 2 x 1.5 m HPGR operating in closed configuration with 6 mm screens, followed by two 26 x 40 ft ball mills. The concentration circuit consists of two rougher flotation stages using mechanical cells, regrinding with vertical mills, three cleaner stages with columns and one cleaner scavenger stage in mechanical cells. The concentrate is dewatered, filtered and transported by trucks and train to the port, to be exported. The circuit was designed on the basis of data obtained from a comprehensive laboratory and pilot plant campaign. The ore variability was assessed through simulation using data from a drilling core characterization program. The start-up of the industrial plant is planned for 2011. This paper describes the main aspects of circuit design, as well as information related to the beginning of the project construction.

The charge for the copper refinery is a mixture of anodes produced at San Manuel from BHP source concentrate and copper purchased from external sources. Control of unwanted impurities in the tankhouse - is very important and beneficial. Currently available removal/recovery technologies were reviewed for the control of bismuth and antimony levels in the electrolyte. Recent studies have focused on solvent extraction (SX) technology and generated successful results for the removal and subsequent recovery of bismuth and antimony. The SX system employs the reagent, ACORGA SBX-50, in conjunction with a patented high chloride stripping system. The latter enables recycle of the eluant, avoiding the high costs associated with conventional systems, such as regeneration of resin. Concerns over potential transfer of organics and chloride ion to the electrolyte were readily addressed, solved and demonstrated using conventional, established technology. This paper describes the benefits of electrolyte purification, the flexibility afforded by the SX system, the operational practices necessary for maintaining adequate control of bismuth and antimony impurities in the electrorefining environment and possibilities for future development /exploitation of the Zeneca SX system at the San Manuel refinery.

INTRODUCTION General Switzerland is a densely populated country in the heart of Europe. With its total surface of 41.300 km2 and a population of 6,8 million in 1986 the average population density is 163 capita / km2. The population density is lower than in Germany (245 capita/ km2) or the Netherlands (355 capita/km2). The USA have a population density of 26 capita/ km 2. However, sixty percent of the Swiss surface is covered by the Alps and another ten percent by the Jura mountains the remaining thirty percent of the surface is covered by the Swiss plateau where the majority of the population lives. The population in the inhabitated areas is thus substantially higher and may possibly reach those in major metropolitain areas. Due to the high population density in Europe in general and Switzerland in particular future traffic demands cannot be fulfilled sole by car or plane. Environmental and land-use constraints lead to the third option for growing transportation needs: High-speed rail (Bovy, 1990). Switzerland has developed its own approach to promote public transportation and in particular rail transportation: "Rail 2000" (Stalder, 1990). The system "Rail 2000" is based on a series of hubs distributed over Switzerland where easy connections can be made.

The Bureau has identified several ventilation techniques and a water spray application for reducing auger mining dust levels. The dust control methods all work by improving air quantity or flow patterns at the face. Section airflow is maximized by reducing air leakage between entries. Sealing stoppings with brushed- on mortar, containing fiberglass additives, reduces leakage. Heading airflow is maximized by properly installing the brattice curtain and keeping the area between the curtain and rib free from obstructions. The brattice curtains should be hung at least 1.7 m (5.5 ft) from the ribs in 7.9 m (26 ft) wide entries and kept less than 4.6 m (15 ft) from the face. A tight curtain seal is created by using the mine air pressure to force the curtain against the timbers, roof and floor of the mine. Using both a blowing curtain and an exhausting curtain will isolate some face workers from dusty air. The Bureau designed, auger clearer spray system, can be used to force heading air across the active face. Laboratory tests indicate that the auger clearer spray system can increase face velocities by more than 0.5 m/sec (100 ft/min), while using less than 0.13 l/sec (2.0 gal/min) of water.

The recycling of end-of-life concrete into new concrete is one of the most interesting options for reducing worldwide natural resources use and emissions associated with the building materials sector. The possibility to realize a larger re-use of silica aggregates from old concrete, strongly contributes to reduce environmental impact (reduced exploitation of natural resources, reduction of CO2 emissions, airborne dust production, etc.).To reach this goal, innovative processing techniques, as well as innovative sensing units and architectures have to be developed. In this perspective an analytical approach, based on hyperspectral sensing techniques, is proposed, discussed and critically evaluated in order to perform an automatic quality control assessment, finalized to maintain a high standard of concrete demolition waste, from the earliest stage of recycling to the further processing stages, according to the detected in-situ demolition waste characteristics. The paper deals with the analysis and the evaluation of the problems related to the integration of this approach with state-of-the-art demolition and building processes and procedures. This paper discusses the use of Conditional Simulation (CS) models to provide mill feed grade profiles for different time periods. The conventional approach of classifying block estimates as ore or waste generally does not adequately represent dilution, lost ore and the anticipated grade control data, including variability of mill feed from the pit and possible stockpiles. The detailed simulation of grade control practices can be done, but at the Pre- or Feasibility stage of the project may be impractical, since drawing dig limits on multiple benches is tedious and time consuming. Using the Feasibility Grade Control (FGC) method as developed by the Centre for Computational Geostatistics (CCG, University of Alberta-Edmonton), the CS models can be processed quickly to establish dilution and lost ore, and predict daily or short-term feed to the mill. The simulated nodes can be aggregated into selective mining units with adequate representation of likely geometries to be recovered from the pit, to mimic anticipated selectivity. An example from a large copper deposit is shown. The study provides an estimated stream of tonnages and grades fed to the plant by mining periods of interest and based on a specific mine design and schedule. The resulting cash flows support the economic and financial analyses of the Feasibility Study; also leads to improving mine schedules; and aids in developing blending schemes if necessary. INTRODUCTION The conventional approach of separating mineralized material into ore or waste categories does not always include a realistic amount of dilution and ore loss. Also, often it does not provide a good estimate of the grade that will be fed to the mill. If the grade control estimates are unbiased, they will over the long run represent the long-term average of grades fed to the mill; but the anticipated variability of mill feed from the pit and stockpile sources may be misrepresented. Some references on traditional grade control implementations can be found in Chunnett (1982); Davis et al. (1989); Srivastava et al. (1992); and Nowak (1992). Alternative methods based on economic variables improved significantly on the purely grade-based control methods, see Douglas et al. (1994). Further developments involved the use of geostatistical conditional simulations (CS) and profit models, which in several cases have been successfully implemented (Aguilar and Rossi, 1996; Rossi, 1997; Deutsch et al., 2000; Norrena and Deutsch, 2002; Neufeld, 2005; Jewbali and Dimitrakopoulos, 2009). But they can be impractical, mostly due to the lack of understanding of the methodology involved; even if semi-automatic dig limit drawing is implemented, there is always a need for is tedious and time consuming checking and corrections, even if using a single profit model derived from the simulated grades.

The selection of the main mineralised zone (MMZ) concentrator milling circuit has followed a comprehensive route over the preceding 10 years. Many knowledgeable parties have contributed and assisted in developing the milling circuit according to the best available information. The final selection of the flow sheet was completed after DRA conducted a techno-economic study on four possible comminution circuits ranging from conventional crushing and ball milling to fully autogenous (AG) milling. The results from all the above mentioned work indicated that it is possible to treat the MMZ ore at the desired throughputs to the desired grind sizes in a fully autogenous grinding circuit. The flow sheet was designed to treat the main mineralised zone (MMZ) arising?s from both underground and open cast operations and incorporates a fully autogenous grinding (AG) circuit. Commissioning of the 375ktpm concentrator at Nkomati Nickel began in August 2009 with the first ore reporting to the mill on the 15th of September 2009.

Methods of detecting geologic faults and other linear features by means of processed LANDSAT satellite images have gained prominence during the past several years . There have been numerous programs written to pick these " lineaments , " but they have been almost universally tailored to large computers . This Bureau of Mines report describes a detection method developed for use with a minicomputer . The method comprises a suite of programs that scans an image for all " potential " lineaments . From this partially analyzed data , the final lineaments are picked by another routine . The method was field tested in an area of south- central Wyoming , and results indicated good agreement between computer- picked lineaments and ground features . Most of the known geologic faults in the area were picked by the method . Such features as roads and trails were also picked but were easily distinguished from faults during field inspection . The method is relatively new but promises to be a viable reconnaissance technique for the mining industry in geologic structural analysis .
