Gas dynamic phenomena, particularly instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas are problems experienced in gassy, highly stressed coal, both usually the result of depth. Diff- erent mining geometries present different opportunities for seam gas to escape, starting from the virgin condition unaffected by mining and ending with the mining of the coal. The mining of the coal varies from entering a virgin seam cross-measure, heading out into virgin seam, advancing longwall faces into virgin seam and extracting developed blocks from large longwall retreating blocks to small pillars. Each method has its particular gass- iness patterns and particular stress patterns, both changing to some extent with time, and changing as mining progresses. Geological structural anomalies are the cause of gas and stress anomalies, causing in turn greater gas and stress manifestations. Pre-drainage of gas from the working seam not only degasifies the coal but causes it to shrink and so may affect stress as well as gas patterns. Unfortunately prior degasification is not all benefit, and there are some d13- advantages to its use. Also although it is possible to degasify places ahead, gassiness will return if drainage holes are shut down or sealed up and other deleterious aspects may be induced. During the development of a mining project, samples are taken for metallurgical tests. The sample can be a composite sample made of material coming from a selection of various drilling products or a sample coming from a mining test. This sample can represent several tonnes of material which are analysed and split to be used in various tests.In the current case, a composite sample is dedicated to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests. The property of interest is then the size distribution of the material. The sample is mixed and a subsample is taken to measure the size distribution which is considered as the feed size distribution. Then the remaining material of the sample is divided in several subsamples for batch grinding tests at different operating conditions. The product of each grinding test is then analysed to measure its size distribution.The grinding performances are analysed at the light of the measured size distributions for feed and product. But what is the accuracy of the measurement of these size distributions? What is the variability of the feed knowing each feed is just a subsample of the initial sample?The Pierre Gy theory of sampling answers these questions.The current paper presents, through a real example, the calculation of the measurement error of the size distributions and the variability of the feed between the different tests. Over the past decade, the mining industry has come to recognise the importance of water both to itself and to others. Water accounting is a formalisation of this importance that quantifies and communicates how water is used by individual sites and the industry as a whole. While there are a number of different accounting frameworks that could be used within the industry, the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs (MCA) water accounting framework (WAF) is an industry-led approach that provides a consistent representation of mine site water interactions regardless of their operational, social or environmental context that allows for valid comparisons between sites and companies.The WAF contains definitions of off-site water sources and destinations and on-site water use, a methodology for applying the definitions, and a set of metrics to measure site performance. The WAF is comprised of two models: the input-output model, which represents the interactions between sites and their surrounding community, and the operational model, which represents on-site water interactions.Members of the MCA have recently adopted the WAFÆs input-output model to report on their external water interactions in their Australian operations, with some adopting it on a global basis. To support this adoption, there is a need for companies to better understand how to implement the WAF in their own operations. Developing a water account is non-trivial, particularly for sites unfamiliar with the WAF or for sites with the need to represent unusual features. Modification of hydrophobic part of carboxylic collector molecule is an upcoming trend for producing new reagents and changing its flotation properties such as activity, selectivity, sensitivity to hardness salts that inevitably present in the pulp liquid phase in the processing of ores containing calcium minerals. A wide range of apatite collectors ? monoalkyl ethers and monoalkylamides of dicarboxylic acids ? succinic, o-phthalic and maleinic acids have been synthesized by the addition of aliphatic alcohols and amines with various hydrocarbon radical value (from ?11 to ?16) to anhydride of the corresponding acid. Using computer modeling based on ChemBio 3D program of specialized complex Chem?ffice the calculation was carried out of charge distribution on atoms, energy parameters of molecules for investigated compounds. Calculated values of absolute hardness (?=6.75 ? 12.36) and absolute electronegativity (?= 5.67 ? 8.90) of the reagents showed that monoderivatives of dicarboxylic acids refer to the ?hard? type of bases. The degree of a charge transfer during calcium compounds formation of considered collecting agents (?N=0.009 ? 0.143) has been computed. Dissociations, micelle formation in solutions of these reagents and its hydrophobic and collecting properties were investigated in respect to apatite. Dependence of bulk, surface and collector properties on collector molecule architecture (double bond or benzene ring and non-ionogenic functional group in the structure of hydrocarbon radical) has been established. It is shown that experimentally determined dissociation constants (??a=5.16 ? 5.60 for succinic acid derivatives and ??a=3.32-3.78 for maleinic and o-phthalic acid derivatives) perfectly correspond to acidic properties predicted by computer calculations. Compounds of monoalkylderivative dicarboxilic acid have been determined optimum in composition and structure. The results of apatite flotation from apatite-nepheline ores of the Khibiny deposit (the Kola Peninsula) are presented here and show benefits of selected reagents. This publication contains analyses and related source data for 153 natural gas samples from 16 States. Of the total samples, 149 were collected during calendar year 1993. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1993. None of the analyses have been previously published in annual reports. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

"Construction activities in major projects that involve deep excavations necessitate the use of vertical walls surrounding the construction site to play an important role as earth retention system. The walls are usually partially penetrating impervious walls which can increase the efficiency of the ground water control system that usually consists of number of partially penetrating wells. The analysis and design of such system requires 3D numerical simulation. The aim of this study is to develop simplified semi-empirical approach to analyze and design such system. The analyzed model is a single well in a square site that is surrounded by impervious walls along the perimeter of the site in an unconfined aquifer. The results of the parametric analysis are presented in this paper aiming to assess and understand the factors that influence dewatering in terms of ground water or drawdown profile surrounding the well. The parametric analysis is carried out using the 3D finite difference software. The parametric analysis comprises with more than 550 cases calculated. The study involved the parameters; well penetration depth, impervious wall penetration depth, size of the construction pit, coefficient of permeability, well yield and well location or distance between well center to impervious wall edge.IntroductionThe presence of groundwater in a site may have impact on the construction processes involved during the course of project construction, especially those projects that involve deep excavations. Deep excavations, especially in urban areas, require the construction of supported walls all around the site perimeter to ensure the stability of the excavation. In most of cases, the constructed walls are relatively impervious. Depending on the ground and site conditions, the walls are not penetrating all the way down through to the bottom of the aquifer and thus the walls are partially penetrating walls. The presence of ground water necessitates the lowering of the groundwater to levels below the bottom of the excavation to ensure working in dry. This paper focuses on groundwater control systems that consist of deep wells inside square areas enclosed by impervious walls partially penetrating unconfined aquifers. The wells are partially penetrating the aquifer, as well. There are many factors or parameters that are related to the configurations of the components of the system that may influence the drawdown of a well in such groundwater control system. This paper is a part of a comprehensive study that aims to development of a simple method for estimating the drawdown of dewatering system of the described configuration. In order to achieve such a major goal, a 3D finite difference model is developed for the problem in hand. A comprehensive parametric analysis was then carried out to investigate the influence of all the parameters on the drawdown of a deep well in such groundwater control system. This paper describes the problem, the model, the parametric analysis including the involved parameters. The paper, then, demonstrate the results of the analysis showing the influence of the studied parameters on the drawdown of a single well."

The activity of MnO has been measured in the system CaF2-MnO at 1773 and 1873 K and in the system CaF2-CaO-MnO at 1773 K by the method of equilibration with platinum. Large positive deviations from ideal solution laws have been found, but these became less as the lime content rose. The loss of a volatile component made activity measurements impossible in the CaF2-AI203-MnO system, but the boundaries of a two-liquid region have been measured at 1773 K.

Granduc lies near the Alaskan border in British Columbia, about 600 miles (960 km) north of Vancouver. Prospecting in the area must take place in the short summer months of fog and rain because the winter is bitter cold, with snowfall up to 960 inches (24.4 m) accompanied by avalanches. Despite these difficulties, the mineral ized area was discovered in the 1920's. By 1956, Newmont Mining Corporation had developed mineable ore reserves estimated at 32,500,000 tons of 1.93% copper. Newmont and ASARCO, in a joint venture, then began development of the ore body, which was partially covered by glaciers. It was apparent a concentrator could not be built at the mine site where overland access was impossible due to the weather conditions and the terrain. Years of engineering studies of all possible access routes finally dictated the driving of an 11 mi long (17.6 km) tunnel passing under three glaciers and three mountain ranges to the nearest feasible concentrator site at Tide Lake. Even then, a mountain road subject to an average snowfall of 800 in. (20. 3 m) had to be built 32 mi (51 krn) from the concentrator through Alaska to Stewart, British Columbia, the nearest port. At Stewart, which is located at the head of a fjord 120 mi (192 krn) from the Pacific Odean, a fully equipped marine terminal was built. The tunnel, the lifeline between mine and mill, was to be driven from both ends; however, in 1965, an avalanche occurred at the Leduc portal, killing 26 crew members and wrecking much of the camp. The tunnel was then driven from one heading adjacent to the concentrator site at Tide Lake, a distance of 53,744 ft (16,381 m) to a point under the ore body. The remote location, type of terrain, and bad weather made supply of crews, equipment, and construction materials difficult; but in spite of these extremely adverse conditions, the tunnel crews set many world records. Mineralization throughout the ore zone is generally uniform in grade and composition and is primarily chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite associated with pyrite. Mining is mainly by sublevel caving. After blasting, rubber-tired load-and-haul equipment moves from level to level by means of an internal connecting ramp system on a 15% slope. This paper presents the results of a field study designed to assess the impact of vane rotation speed on the estimated undrained strength for two Australian bauxite tailings storage facilities. The vane test results are assessed against cone penetration and dissipation tests results to identify if partial drainage may be an issue. An innovative tool capable of measuring pore pressures during vane shear testing, the Piezovane™, is introduced as an improvement over the standard field vane to assess drainage conditions in real-time.

"The most significant study on the effects of longwall mining on gas and oil well integrity was completed by a consortium of coal and shale gas industry participants. A field study was conducted in 2013 and 2014 and is referred to by its location on Well Pad NV-35. The experiment site was located at the CONSOL Enlow Fork Mine in Washington County, Pennsylvania.The experiment was completed to verify John T. Boyd Company (BOYD) calculations and studies completed under contract by for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Gas Well Pillar Study Update. The findings of the original study were presented by BOYD at the 32nd Conference, while numerical analysis of the Well Pad NV-35 field study was presented by Dr. Su at the 35th Conference.This paper addresses the findings of the experiment and how it confirmed the conclusions of the original study.INTRODUCTIONA field study was conducted in 2013 and 2014 by a consortium of coal and shale gas industry members to test the effects of longwall-induced ground movement on the stability and integrity of wells drilled through a gateroad abutment pillar. The project was initiated to test initial John T. Boyd Company (BOYD) findings of the Gas Well Pillar Study Update (Scovazzo and Moran, 2014), completed for Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Oil and Gas Management (PDEP). Background and initial findings on this project were presented at the 32nd Conference (Scovazzo and Moran, 2012). The field work and numerical analysis were spearheaded by CONSOL Energy, Inc. (CONSOL) with participation by Chevron, EQT, Noble Energy, Range Resources, Marcellus Shale Coalition, and the Pennsylvania Coal Alliance.Dr. Wen H. Su of CONSOL was the leader of the field experiment with input from the participants. Dr. Su also completed numerical analysis of the results and model casing deformation. Analytical results were presented by Dr. Su at the 35th Conference (Su, 2017)."

Shallow underground voids resulting from early coal mining and other resource recovery activities over the past several decades are now being recognized as a significant cause of ground subsidence problems in developing urban areas. Uncertain knowledge of abandoned coal mines also imposes potential hazards in coal excavation operations since water inundation or the release of methane gas is a pricnipal hazard when mine excavation operations break into an abandoned mine. U.S. Army requirements for an effective method for detecting and mapping subversive man-made tunnels have resulted in a surface-operated automatic earth resistivity survey system with a digital computer data processing system. Field tests aimed at demonstrating the system performance resulted in successful detection of tunnels having depth-to-diameter ratios up to 15 to 1. Under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Mines, a similar system was designed and constructed for use in the detection of coal mine workings. This report discusses the hardware and software aspects of the system and the application of the high-resolution earth resistivity method to the survey and mapping of abandoned coal mine workings. In the field tests reported, the targets of interest were both air-filled and water-filled workings.

IN the belief that a critical study of its operating problems might be a sound investment, the Cuban American Manganese Corporation initiated an ore-treatment research in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the early objectives of this research naturally became the relationship of the microscopy of the Cuban ores of the Corporation to their flotation treatment. The operations in Cuba have already been described by F. S. Norcross, Jr.7 and the laboratory study of manganese oxide flotation goes back a number of years .4 Broadly speaking, the difficulties encountered in the flotation of manganese ores are that the consumption of reagents is extremely high, the concentrate contains more silica than is desirable and the tailing losses are relatively high. An appreciable betterment on any of these scores would achieve a definite betterment in costs, quantity of minable ores, and quality of product. The microscope study discussed in this paper was made on samples from the Quinto mine, from the Ponupo mine, and from mill products at various stages of passage of the ore through the mill. The writers have had access to Company records and in particular to the petro¬graphic studies made on thin sections of ore by the late Professors R. J. Colony and Philip Krieger, of Columbia University. They acknowledge their debt to both of these men for the help derived from the reports. Manganese oxides are black, friable, smudging. It is, therefore, very difficult to judge operations by inspection. The mineralogy of manganese compounds seems to be confused, and the authors believe that many more minerals have been described than actually exist. Much of this difficulty is due to the prevalence of the structural conditions that will be discussed further in this paper; namely, the porosity and the friability of the ores, and the extremely intimate association of minute manganiferous mineral crystals with impurities of various sorts. By all odds the most important manganese mineral in Cuba is the one that in this paper is called "psilomelane." The name "psilomelane" has been used in so many different ways that the choice of it for this ore may not be approved by all. However, it seems to be the best under the circumstances. This mineral accounts for about 97 per cent of the manganese in the ores of the Quinto and Ponupo mines and in the mill feed. The remaining odd 3 per cent consists mostly of pyrolusite together with minor amounts of other manganese oxide minerals. "In this work, a novel compound 4-Amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole was first synthesized and its selective adsorption mechanism on the surface of chalcopyrite was comprehensively investigated using UV-vis spectra, zeta potential, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectrscpy Measurements(XPS), and Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and first principle calculations. The experimental and computational results consistently demonstrated that AMT would chemisorb onto the chalcopyrite surface by the formation of a five-membered chelate ring. The first principle periodic calculations further indicated that AMT would prefer to adsorb onto Cu rather than Fe due to the more negative adsorption energy of AMT on Cu on the chalcopyrite (001) surface, which was further confirmed by the coordination bonding energies of AMT-Cu and AMT-Fe based on the simplified cluster models at a higher accuracy level (UB3LYP/Def2TZVP). The bench scale results indicated that the selective index improved significantly when using AMT as a potential chalcopyrite depressant in Cu-Mo flotation separation.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is one of the most important processes to separate valuable minerals from gangue by taking advantage of differences in the physical chemistry of their surface properties(Laitinen et al., 2014), particularly in their surface hydrophobicity. Hydrophobicity differences between valuable and gangue minerals could be regulated by adding different chemical additives (surfactants)(Kor, Korczyk, Addai-Mensah, Krasowska, & Beattie, 2014), such as collector and depressant. It could be conducted economically to selectively separate and enrich the complicated and/or poor ores, by adopting appropriate surfactants. For example, the beneficiation of molybdenite usually relies on a two-stage process to realize flotation separation of molybdenite from other unwanted sulphide ores(Wie & Fuerstenau, 1974). In the first step, a bulk molybdenite concentrate is produced by utilizing kerosene/ diesel oil and pine oil/alcohols as collector and frother, respectively. Second, sodium hydrosulphide, sodium cyanide, ammonium sulphide, or Nokes reagent are adopted as depressants in the separation stage. However, these depressants are usually toxicant and cannot meet the requirements of environmental protection. A large number of efforts have been taken to develop alternative environmentally-friendly depressants (Ansari & Pawlik, 2007; J. H. Chen, Lan, & Liao, 2013; Li et al., 2015; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhai, & Guan, 2017; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhang, Guan, Liu, et al., 2017; Yin et al., 2016). Although some novel and environmental-friendly depressants have been reported to achieve good performance in Cu-Mo flotation separation at a laboratory scale, there are still some challenging problems, including toxicity, high price or poor performance in practice, which severely limit their practical applications in Cu-Mo flotation separation on a commercial scale."

Mechanism of BK501 in desiliconization from bauxite was studied by use of flotation test, EDS, ?-potential, FTIR. Results of flotation show that almost all of diaspore can be depressed when BK501 is put into pulp ranging from pH 4~12, in the meanwhile kaolinite is slightly activated. In the light of surface analyses, it is concluded that the adsorption of reagent on the diaspore is dominant by chemical interaction. Moreover, kaolinite may float more by addition of BK501 because of flocculation.

Seafloor polymetallic sulfides have been found in diverse volcanic and tectonic settings on the ocean floor at water depths ranging from 3700 meters to <1500 meters. More than 100 occurrences of hydrothermal mineralization have been documented (including Fe-oxide deposits, Mn-crusts, metalliferous sediments, and massive sulfides), but high-temperature hydrothermal activity and large accumulations of polymetallic sulfides are known at fewer than 20 different sites. Chemical analyses of samples from these deposits indicate that they contain important concentrations of Cu, Zn, Ag, and Au, comparable to those of massive sulfide deposits on land. However, the lack of sufficient data concerning the distribution, size, and bulk composition of seafloor deposits precludes a meaningful assessment of their resource potential.

[Several processes for recovering manganese from low-grade ores have been proposed3/4/5/ in which an aqueous slurry of the ore is leached with gas containing nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur dioxide as obtained from burning sulfur or roasting sulfide ores. The manganese dioxide is dissolved, and most of the sulfur dioxide is oxidized to sulfate, but an appreciable quantity of dithionate is usually formed, together with acid from oxidation of the sulfur dioxide. The over-all reactions may be represented as follows: (1) Mn02 + S02 = Mn++ + S04--. (2) Mn02 + 2S02 = Mn++ +S206--. (3) H20 + So2 + 1/2 02 = 2H+ 5S4--. (4) H20 + 2S02 + 1/2 02 = 2H+ + S206---.]

Calgary, your meeting place today, is the birthplace of this economic revolution, one that has already sharply altered the economy .of the middle half of Canada, particularly that of Alberta; is increasingly making its weight felt on the economy of all Canada; and is helping re-shape world thinking on sources of vital petroleum supply for both peace and war. Calgary is today the 'operation headquarters' for the great bulk of a huge exploration and development programme that now extends over a quarter of a million square miles of Canada's West.
