Open pit mine enterprises are complex systems that depend on multiple parameters such as mineral grade distribution, geotechnical characteristics, economic conditions and engineering requirements, all of which vary in time and space with a different degree of uncertainty. The unpredictable nature of these inputs imposes a risk to mine owners and shareholders which in the worst case can lead to highly undesirable financial outcomes.Desktop studies commonly examine a set of scenarios based on adjusting variables such as commodity prices, mining costs, processing costs, and metal recoveries to understand their relative impact on the economics of a project. It is less common to systematically explore and simulate hundreds of alternative physical designs to understand and compare the financial risk associated with one or more mining projects.This paper presents a risk assessment tool set and methodology that uses web based cloud computing to enable multiple simulations of mine designs to be rapidly and efficiently executed. The methodology includes generating random sets of prices and costs values within their respective probability distributions. Pit designs are then created to maximise the profit for each set of input variables. Various approaches to analysing the results are discussed. Massive deposits of rock salt are mined in the Salt Range area of Pakistan. The main export products of rock salt include salt lamps, blocks, and tiles, while local consumption includes the chemical industry and domestic use. The profitable production of salt for value addition depends on the quality, size, and shape of the block. Salt processing for value addition is easier when very few cracks are present in the blocks. The current salt mining practice involves drilling and blasting, which introduces undesired fractures in the material. This paper focuses on the extraction of rock salt blocks by applying conventional cuboidshaped block mining methods used in quarries. The techniques include wedges and feathers, expansion chemicals, and blasting with low-yield explosives. Experimental work involved both laboratory-scale and in-situ field testing. Laboratory experiments assisted with the determination of splitting force, loaddeformation curves, and other rock mechanics parameters. Regression analysis proposes a relationship for the estimation of radial strain from the load in the case of the wedges and feathers method. The splitting force obtained from the laboratory tests was used to confirm the accuracy of the already published empirical relationship. The results of the laboratory as well as in-situ tests showed that the wedges and feathers technique is the most suitable method for mining rock salt blocks of the desired size, shape, while minimizing cracking.

The Bureau of Mines investigated preheating of continuously fed, fragmented ferrous scrap charges by furnace offgases and utilizing substitutes for imported fluorspar to condition electric steelmaking slags. Three types of continuous scrap charging procedures were investigated to determine electrical energy consumption in a I-st (short ton) electric arc furnace. Cold and preheated scrap charges were continuously fed at rates averaging 37.5 and 43.7lb/min, respectively. The feed rate varied appreciably from test to test owing to hangup of the scrap in the charge bin. Approximately 7 pct less electrical energy was consumed in melting scrap preheated to 8400 to 1,1100 F by furnace off-gases than in melting cold scrap. Overall energy consumptions were 888 kW'h/st for cold scrap, 829 kW'h/st for preheated scrap" and 637 kW'h/st for conventional backcharged scrap. Stack gases from scrap preheating averaged 1200 F and a flow rate of 1,615 scfm compared with 2200 F and 1,302 sefm for cold-charged scrap. Slag conditioners tested included synthetic fluorspar, boric acid, hydroboracite, used aluminum potlining wastes and aluminum anode tailing wastes, and Sorelflux B. The boron-containing conditioners fluidized the slags the best, followed in order by the conditioners containing fluorine and titanium.

Soil liquefaction is a dangerous phenomenon that involves huge damages during strong earthquake ground motion event. Stone columns (SCs) are widely used as liquefaction mitigation element which is expected to perform the improvements against liquefaction hazard by densifying, increasing the stiffness and rapid dissipation of excess pore water pressure in the surrounding soil. Although in the recent times few studies on the behaviour of stone columns in the seismic zone has evolved, the performance of SCs in the multi-layered soils is not extensively examined. This paper presents the numerical investigations on the performance of SCs installed in the multi-layered soils as a liquefaction mitigation measure against the seismic loading. The acceleration time histories, Excess Porewater Pressure (EPP), vertical displacement and stress ratio evaluated along different depths using PLAXIS 2D. With the installation of stone column there is a considerable reduction in the acceleration amplitude, which in turn reduces the EPP and vertical displacement at different locations and the amplitude of reduction depends on the soil stiffness levels at the depth.

The Energy Act of 1992 has many users of ac-induction motors eyeing premium-efficiency motors with mixed feelings and perhaps some confusion. When the October 1997deadline arrives for compliance with the1992 standards, the winners will be the environment due to reduced need for more power generating plants and the petroleum economy because of reduced dependency on foreign oil. But what will it mean for industrial users? The most obvious benefit is the potential for smaller electricity bills. Motors account for about 64% of the electricity consumed in the United States, at a yearly cost of $112 billion. Every 1% reduction in motor demand cuts 0.64%, or $716 million, off the industry wide bill. Higher efficiency motors also run cooler. This lightens the load on air-conditioning systems and further reduces plant demand. Lower total demand can lead to lower rates by helping to minimize peak-demand surcharges. As rates increase over time, these savings get bigger.

BECAUSE of its magnitude, and the type of occurrence, the deposit of boron minerals in the Kramer district, Kern County, California, is unlike any other in the world. Discovery of this vast deposit has brought about many changes in the borax industry, so a discussion of the geology, and the occurrence, would not be complete without a brief history of the development of the borax industry. Until the discovery of boron minerals in the desert regions of California and Nevada some seventy years ago, borax was imported from Tibet and India, principally for medicinal purposes, at almost prohibitive prices. Following the discovery of commercial deposits of boron minerals in California and Nevada, and the subsequent development of new uses for borax and boric acid, the consumption has steadily increased until today borax is used in some form or other in every household.

"Current economic problems frequently have focused attention upon the lack of adequate quantitative information indicating the relationship between human effort and output in various branches of the mineral industry. With the exception of complete records covering coal mining, only scattered information on the units of human energy required to produce a unit of raw material is available for most of the important industrial minerals. Fortunately a virtually complete statistical record is available covering this phase of the iron-ore mining industry.For many years iron-ore mining companies, whose interest in safety work is well-known, have reported annual data on employment to be used in the compilation of accident statistics. These data on hours of labor and other detailed employment information have been correlated with the statistics on production also reported annually by producers. The outstanding trends shown by this composite record for the 10-year period 1923-32 are included in the following discussion, supplemented by a summary table that presents the principal statistical background of the study. 5The substantial reduction in the number of men needed to produce the annual iron-ore requirements of the United States, as shown strikingly in the graphs, illustrates that in iron-ore production improvements in technology have been consistently winning a battle over the difficulties of nature. In 1923, for example, 41,294 men working 107,551,244 hours were required to produce 69,351,442 gross tons of merchantable ore, equivalent to an average output of 0.645 ton per man-hour. In 1929, however, only 30,763 men working 77,111,686 hours 'zero required to produce 73,027,720 tons of merchantable ore, equivalent to an average output of 0.947 ton per man-hour. Thus, from 1923 to 1929 the average number of men working decreased 25.5 percent and the total man-hours worked 28.3 percent, while the average output per man-hour increased 46.8 percent and total merchantable ore production 5.3 percent."

During 1953-55, 31,105 miles of pipe for transporting crude petroleum and refined products was laid in the United States, a total slightly below that of the prior 3-year period, according to data compiled by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior. The added mileage consisted of 22,571 miles of new pipe, representing about 2,163,807 tons of steel, plus 8,534 miles of secondhand pipe, equivalent to about 419,849 additional tons of steel. During the 3-year period, 13,069 miles of pipe was taken up. By January 1, 1956, the Nation had 188,540 miles of pipeline, an 11-percent gain over the 1952 total of 170,504 miles. The greater use of larger diameter pipelines indicated in recent surveys has continued, as the mileage for sizes 12 inches and over increased from 13 percent of the total mileage at the close of 1952 to 16 percent 3 years later. Crude-oil trunklines 12 inches and over in diameter gained 24 percent during 1953-55, and these larger lines represented 30 percent of the total mileage compared with 25 percent at the close of 1952. Furthermore, the mileage for crude-oil lines less than 12 inches in diameter declined 2 percent and made up only 70 percent of the 1955 total against 75 percent n the previous survey. Product Lines 8 inches and over increased 43 percent from 1952 through 1955 and composed 70 percent of the total mileage compared with 66 percent in 1952.

On installing the Metso Superior MK 54x75? primary gyratory crusher in Nkomati mine the crusher experienced severe power spikes greater than 1000kW which subsequently led to the crusher tripping under load while processing some of Nkomati?s MMZ ores. Likewise significant losses in throughput were also experienced while processing some of Nkomati?s MMZ ore types. Interestingly the crusher was capable of processing the PCMZ ores without experiencing any power spikes or losses in throughput. Investigations into the challenges faced by the crusher while processing Nkomati?s MMZ ores were conducted using the DEM model in conjunction with the fast breakage model present in Metso?s High Fidelity Simulator. The intentions of the study were to establish the most suitable operating conditions or cavity design that would potentially enhance the performance of the crusher. Likewise an understanding of the effects the feed conditions (size distribution and hardness) had on the crusher?s performance was established. Ore characterization tests were conducted on Nkomati?sPyroxenite, Diabase, Calc silicate and quartzite ores which were from Nkomati?s MMZ ore body. The ore characterization tests conducted were drop weight tests, slow compression tests and elastic modulus tests. Four simulations were conducted used the existing cavity design with various open side settings (OSS) and throws. This established the effects of changing the crusher?s operating conditions on its performance. Four additional simulations were conducted on two cavity designs with reduced volumes. This established the effects of changing the crusher?s cavity design on the crusher?s performance. Thus through the simulations a better understandings of the impact of the crusher design, operating conditions and feed conditions on the crushers performance. Furthermore an analysis of the crusher?s performance was made which was used as a basis for comparisons with the base case simulation. "In this paper, scheelite and scheelite coated with Pb2+ (SC) were synthesized by chemical precipitation with the help of ultrasonic. The role of the Pb2+ on scheelite was evaluated. Additionally, the dissolution behavior of minerals and the adsorption mechanism of collectors were investigated systematically via SEM, XRD, EDS. The results indicate that the ultrasonic cavitation can promote the formation of scheelite with large particle size and high crystallinity. Due to the exchange of WO4 2- and OH-, the dissolution of scheelite are not in a 1:1 equivalent amount by chemical formula and the concentration of WO4 2- is higher than that of Ca2+ in the solution because Pb2+ promotes the transfer of WO4 2- from scheelite surface into the solution. The dissolution of scheelite is an endothermic reaction and its enthalpy reaches the maximum value of 692.59J·mol-1 at pH=8~10. But the coating of Pb2+ changes the thermal effect of scheelite in the solution and the dissolution of SC is an exothermic reaction with the dissolution enthalpy of -262.30 J·mol-1. At pH=8~10, the adsorption capacity of sodium oleate and salicylhydroxamic acid on the surface of SC is higher than that of scheelite which delivers that Pb2+ contributes to the scheelite surface dissolution and enhances the adsorption of collectors on the mineral surface, thus achieving activation.INTRODUCTIONIn modern society, tungsten is a type of quite important rare metal and also a strategic resource. Because of its low vapor pressure, high melting point, good electrical and thermal conductivity properties, it is widely applied in high-temperature technology, lighting, machine and engine construction (Zhao,Z.W, 2013; Yan, W, 2017; Ilhan, S, 2013). Both scheelite and wolframite are the major tungsten deposits. With the depletion of easily-processed wolframite, scheelite has drawn a great deal of scientific and industrial attention. Scheelite can be recovered by flotation due to the metathesis of polarity and chargeability on minerals surface via adding regulators and collectors."

The inherent heating value or the amount of heat that will be produced when a coal is completely burned is measured in British thermal units (B. t. u.) per pound of coal . This standard heat unit is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 °F . at about 60 °F . The amount of inherent heat is determined by burning a small quantity of the coal in a heat meter or calorimeter , which gives results in British thermal units . The exact manner of making this test is standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials.4/ The value so determined is the total heat developed by complete burning, with all the products of combustion cooled down to the temperature of the calorimeter . The calorimeter is kept at about room temperature . This total heat is sometimes called the " high" or gross heat value , because it includes the latent heat given up by the water vapor in the products of combustion when the vapor condenses to water in the calorimeter . The heat as measured is reported as the heat of combustion at constant volume , since the burning is carried out in a tightly closed calorimeter chamber whose volume does not change . In actual use , coal is usually burned in an open - end chamber at constant pressure , generally somewhere near atmospheric . As the heat of combustion of coal at constant pressure is very slightly higher than the heat of combustion at constant volume , it might be considered that the heat at constant pressure should be used as the standard reference base . For an ordinary eastern coal the heat at constant pressure is about 16 B. t . u. per pound higher than the heat at constant volume . Calorimeter corrections , ordinarily not considered , that could have been subtracted from the heating value before reporting , may amount to about as much . Hence , the value reported is apt to be more nearly the true heating value at constant pressure than at constant volume .

Since 1978, most systematic studies of AMD passive treatment with limestone drains (LD) have dealt with coal mines in the United States. The authors present in this paper the first results of a triennial study initiated in 1999 on the performance of LD installed at the Ni-Cu Lorraine old mine site in Temiscamingue during a remediation plan that involved the installation of a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) over the reactive pyrrhotite-rich tailings. Typically, a LD is a trench enclosed by impervious materials filled with crushed limestone and may be oxic or anoxic. Four LD (one filled with marble and 3 with dolomite) were installed at the Lorraine site. The LD have been in operation since May 1999 and are performing differently. The most contaminated mine effluent flows south and is directed towards 3 LD filled with crushed dolomite, while a 4th LD was filled with crushed marble and installed west. The LD filled with marble has been generating maximum alkalinity since the beginning of the passive treatment. Two of the dolomite drains have been generating alkalinity since mid-summer 1999, but one is not, even if a substantial pH raise was observed. A pH above 5.5 is required usually for the dolomite drains to start generating alkalinity. The installation of LD at the Lorraine site contributes significantly to the reduction of metals and sulphates loading.

Table 46 and figure 16 show the number of fires and fire injuries for metal/nonmetal mills by state during 1990-2001. Table 46 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. In all, 77 fires occurred in 26 states. Thirty-seven of the fires caused 41 injuries and 1 fatality (including 5 fires and 3 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was 6.4 fires and 3.4 injuries. Fifty-four fires with 26 injuries and 1 fatality occurred at metal mills; 23 fires with 15 injuries occurred at nonmetal mills. The Ewhr value was 845 x 106 hr (Irr = 0.01), and the LWD value was 6,681. Minnesota had the most fires (16 fires and 5 injuries), followed by Arizona (9 fires and 3 injuries), Wyoming (8 fires and 3 injuries), Nevada (7 fires, 4 injuries, and 1 fatality), and Texas (4 fires and 7 injuries). Of these states, Texas had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr = 0.033). Table 47, partly illustrated in figure 17, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires increased slightly during the second period, then decreased during the remaining periods. The number of fire injuries show a decrease during most of the periods (an increase is seen during the third period), accompanied by a decline in employees' working hours during most of the periods. The Irr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values. Tables 48-53 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 18 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 54 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

"Abstract-The Voisey’s Bay Ni-Cu-Co deposit was discovered in late 1994 as the result of prospecting initiated in the summer of 1993. By July 1995, proven mineable reserves were 31.7 x 106 tonnes grading 2.83% Ni, 1.68% Cu and 0.12% Co, and current total resources in all categories are quoted to be in the order of 150 X 106 tonnes. The deposit is associated with a body of troctolite belonging to the Nain Anorthosite (1.35 Ga - 1.29 Ga) suite, which was emplaced across the boundary between the Proterozoic "Rae" Province to the west and Archean "Nain" Province to the east.The deposit can be described in terms of three geological settings. The "Ovoid" is a 600 m long by 350 m wide by 100 m deep lens of massive sulfide, covered by 10 m to 20 m of glacial overburden, and separated from the underlying country rock quartz-plagioclase-biotite gneiss by a breccia of gneissic fragments in troctolite known as the Basal Breccia Sequence. To the west of the Ovoid lies the "Western Extension", comprising disseminated and massive sulfides in a north-dipping sheet of troctolite which ranges from upper unmineralized troctolite down through troctolite with increasing amounts of sulfide (up to 50%), to massive sulfide (in some places only), and then to Basal Breccia Sequence. East of the Ovoid, the troctolite sheet broadens out into a troctolite intrusion, within which occurs the "Eastern Deeps", a zone of massive and disseminated sulfide up to 100 m thick that is currently being explored. The mineralization of the Eastern Deeps lies along the line of intersection of a feeder sheet with the base of the intrusion. The current interpretation is that the three geological environments represent different erosional levels through a single mineralized intrusion. In this model, the deepest erosional level lies to the west and exposes the feeder to surface, whereas the Ovoid represents the base of the intrusion at surface, and the Eastern Deeps the base of the intrusion overlain by 600 m to 900 m of troctolite. Sulfides and gneissic fragments were brought up by magma flowing quickly through the feeder, and settled out where the flow rate decreased as the sulfide-bearing magma mixed with magma already emplaced in the intrusive body."

"The electrolysis process in which CO2 is selectively reduced to C2H4 at a three-phase(gas/solution/metal) interface on a copper-mesh electrode has been developed in a concentrated solution of potassium halide. At open-circuit potential, CO2 is captured on the electrode by being inserted into the double-layer consisting of halide anions specifically adsorbed and potassium cations which are located in the Helmholtz inner and outer layers, respectively. CO2 thus activated is subjected to the electrochemical reduction. In the early stage of reduction, CO2 is converted to formate radicals that are adsorbed on the electrode by taking the place of halide anions. The reductive coupling of these radicals results in the formation of intermediates such as -CH2C(O)- and CH2=CH-, and C2H4 is finally produced. The catalytic activity of the electrode process involving the insertion of CO2 into the double layer is not deteriorated at all during the electrolysis, and the continuous reduction of CO2 to C2H4 is possible with the addition of inorganic acid under the assistance of natural energy.Carbon dioxide is a serious pollutant released from fossil fuel power station, internal combustion and many industrial operations. The easy release of CO2 to the air has caused the global warming, and the technique which intends to curtail CO2 by pushing it back into the ground has been suggested. However, this problem should be greatly mitigated if CO2 can be converted to innocuous substances. Especially, the reuse of CO2 as fuels and chemicals is extremely effective not only for the mitigation of the global warming but also against the depletion of the fossil fuel reserves. Several processes for converting CO2 to valuable compounds have been proposed including hydrogenation over heterogeneous catalyst at high temperature and electrochemical and photochemical reduction. In the conversion and cutback processes of CO2, however, it is of importance that the process is feasible under mild conditions, because the secondary generation of CO2 is feared if high energy is required and supplied with a fossil fuel. In this meaning, the electrochemical reduction of CO2 taking place at room temperature, which is similar to photosynthesis, is promising. From the practical point of view, it is further necessary that the conversion rate is high enough and the product is satisfactorily valuable."

Excavation of large rock caverns is a stepwise process. Whether one uses a heading and bench method or a multiple drift system, the use of excavation steps enables one to introduce the reinforcement, such as bolts or shotcrete, at the earliest possible stage. Knowing the spatial distribution and properties of rock materials and geological discontinuities, the cavern geometry and its reinforcement must be optimized. The finite element method of analysis is a powerful tool for such optimization. However, the models are only as good as their ability to account realistically for the physical attributes of the prototype and for the excavation sequence. They must include the following: - ability to model an incremental construction process. Thus requires the use of "Restart" procedures where displacements and stresses from a previous equilibrium are saved for the next step. - ability to model non-linear rock material behavior; in particular, the post-peak behavior of the rock which retains a residual strength when con-fined. The stability of many under-ground structures rests with the "broken" rock carrying significant loads. - ability to account for the non-linear behavior of geological discontinuities. These are two-fold. First, up to peak, non smooth rock joints will dilate. In a confined situation, dilation will increase joint strength by a consider-able amount (Obert, et al, Brady, 1971, Heuze,1978a), Then, beyond the peak, the joint also retains residual strength.

"Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest Maritime Province, is located in the southwestern part of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Province is more or less centrally located in the Maritimes Basin, a large intermontane basin within the Appalachian orogenic belt. The Maritimes Basin is subdivided into sub-basins and uplifts which exhibit two dominant structural trends: east and northeast. The Basin is known to be petroliferous because of the seeps, shows, oil shales and albertite found in southern New Brunswick and northern Nova Scotia and the gas and oil produced from the Stony Creek field near Moncton, New Brunswick.Permian beds are exposed on the Island, mostly along sea-cliffs. A maximum thickness of about 5,000 feet of red beds -shales, sandstones and conglomerates -make up the sequence. Over most of the Island, the Permian section is much thinner. Four key wells (Mississippian tests) and several shallower tests have been drilled. The Pennsylvanian-Mississippian section thickens rapidly off the Port Hill Uplift at the northwest, where it is less than 4,600 feet thick, and continues to thicken to about 20,000 feet in the Cumberland Basin at the southeast. Geological and geophysical data combine to give us the structural picture of the deeper beds.Prospective reservoir rocks are primarily in the Missis-sippian Horton and Windsor groups. Prospects are:-1. on or over structural highs in the basement; 2. on anticlines or fault highs; 3. over or peripheral to salt domes or salt-core anticlines; 4. at truncation pinchouts of Mississippian prospective beds; 5. in basal sandstone or granite wash on the pre-Carboni-ferous basement; and 6. in facies traps at changes from sandstone to shale or porous to tight carbonate rocks."

"A world class rare metals ore deposit in Africa belongs to a massive granite type poly-metallic pyrochlore-niobium resource. Successful project development in realizing the resource is vital to Africa’s economy and pyrochlore processing technology.The ore properties are quite complex due to the presence of varieties of valuable minerals, fine dissemination and intimate association of minerals and the relative abundance of easy-floatable minerals. The separation of pyrochlore from zircon, calcite and mica is generally considered difficult. Whilst studies have previously been conducted by several independent institutions overseas, no satisfactory process has yet been developed to date for the ore deposit—possibly due to the process designed being too complex; high cost of regents; lower performance.Based on process mineralogy study and extensive testwork, the authors have in recent years developed a new technology—“De-slime—Iron-rejection—Zircon (with calcite) and Calcite reverse flotation—Pyrochlore flotation”. The flow-sheet is characterized by ?1prior removal of slimes and iron minerals; ?2 Zircon (with calcite) and Calcite reverse flotation; and ?3Pyrochlore flotation applying new type of chelating collector GYX3 developed by GZRINM in conjunction with selected regulators and depressants.The process involved in the new technology is simple to implement and facilitates stable operation; the flotation reagent regime is easily adaptable; the cost of main reagent is lower largely because it is easy to manufacture and is environmental friendly. Laboratory test results demonstrated that, for raw ore assaying 0.35% Nb2O5, 0.03% Ta2O5 and 0.45% ZrO2, pyrochlore concentrate grade of >35% Nb2O5 could be obtained with >74% recovery. Meanwhile, the Ta2O5 content in pyrochlore concentrate could be recycled, and ZrO2 recovery >50% could be achieved in zircon concentrate assaying ZrO2>63%—significantly improving the technical-economic indicator. These results were verified in pilot trials of 1.44t/d throughput. The paper presents the new technology in whole, summarizes the key factors affecting its performance and discusses in simple terms the mechanism of separation."

The electrochemistry of sulfide mineral flotation is reviewed with particular emphasis on galvanic interaction among minerals and grinding media, and its relevance to flotation of complex sulfide ores is discussed. Surface alteration due to galvanic interactions among chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and mild steel is analyzed in terms of voltammetric and chronoamperometric studies on individual minerals and through galvanic current measurements in 2- and 3- electrode combinations. The results are related to laboratory flotation behaviors of chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite mixtures simulating copper-nickel bearing Duluth gabbro.

"Ribbon-growth-on-substrate is a casting method, which offers a possibility to control heat flow, nucleation and subsequent crystal growth at the liquid-substrate interface. This technology allows for low-cost and high throughput shaping of silicon sheets with controlled crystal grain size and orientation for use in solar cells. In this work, sheets of silicon- metal silicide composite materials were produced and their microstructure was studied. It was shown that depending on the relevant phase diagram and casting conditions, a micro/nano-sized eutectic structure of the casted sheet can be formed. Such composite materials possess properties promising for various applications in energy generation, storage and conservation. The advantages, potential and challenges of the ribbon-growth-on-substrate technique for production of composite sheet materials as well as novel areas of application for such materials are discussed.IntroductionThe Ribbon Growth on Substrates (RGS) process is well known in the solar industry as a process to produce multicrystalline silicon wafers. An industrial size pilot production line for continuous casting of silicon wafer was developed by RGS Development B.V. in the Netherlands (Figure 1). A comprehensive review of this technology and properties of the produced silicon wafers were reported by Schönecker et al [1]. The principle of the RGS process is explained in Figure 2. The relatively cold substrate extracts the crystallization heat from the liquid silicon in the casting frame. This results in the growth of a silicon ribbon (Vc) in contact with the substrate. When the substrate (Vp) is transported from the casting zone into the cooling section, the crystal growth stops, the wafer can be removed and the substrate can be re-used. Last few years large work was done on the industrialization and market development of RGS wafers for the solar industry. Part of this work was discussed by Schönecker et al [2]. Although there is still a good perspective on the middle and long term solar market for the RGS wafers, the current market situation was found to be unfavorable for new entrants."
