A naphtha obtained by destructive, recycle hydrogenation of crude shale oil, produced by gas-combustion retorting of Colorado oil shale, was found by the Bureau of Mines to contain 49.1 percent paraffins, 20.3 percent cycloparaffins, 7.8 percent olefins, and 22.8 percent aromatics. The naphtha contained only minor amounts of sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen compounds. Compounds containing less than 5 carbon-atoms per molecule were removed by distillation before analysis. The paraffins where predominantly straight-chain compounds; n-Hexane was present in the largest quantity, and the other straight-chain paraffins decreased in amount as the molecular weight increased. The cycloparaffins, which contained both cyclopentanes and cyclohexanes, were evenly distributed throughout the boiling range. Although the naphtha had been produced by hydrogenation, it contained a small quantity of olefins. Straight-chain olefins with a terminal double bond comprised about two-thirds of these compounds. Among olefins with an internal double bond, those having trans configuration were present in three times the quantity of those in the cis form. In the aromatics all but one of the alkylbenzenes having nine or less carbon-atoms per molecule were identified; toluene was present in the greatest quantity. Only a few of the higher molecular-weight homologs were identified. The composition of the naphtha was computed from analyses of 105 narrow¬boiling distillation fractions. Volume, density, refractive indices, bromine number, and an ultraviolet spectrum were determined on each fraction. From these data the hydrocarbon-group composition of each fraction was estimated. A silica gel adsorption analysis was used to check the values of nearly one-third of the fraction calculated from physical-property data. Mass and infrared spectra were obtained on some fractions for identifying individual compounds or types of compounds, such as terminal olefins.

The Ravensworth-Liddell area is part of the Muswellbrook- Singleton Coal District of the Northern Coalfield. It lies in the Parishes of Liddell, Ravensworth, Vane and Howick, in the County of Durham, midway between Singleton and Muswellbrook, and is traversed by the Great Northern Railway, and the New England Highway.Ravensworth and Liddell railway stations are 57 miles arid 61 miles, respectively, north from Newcastle (Fig. 1).The area has been the centre of an intensive search for open cut coal during the past few years. More than 1,200 bores, of which about 10% were cored diamond drill holes, were drilled to depths of about 200ft. Portions with thicker cover have been explored by 10 diamond drill holes to depths of over 400ft. but core recovery from these deeper holes was poor, and the lack of detail in the recorded logs limits geological interpretation. The drilling has proved about 34,000,000 tons of open cut coal, and about 246,000,000 tons under deeper cover.GEOLOGYThe Ravensworth-Liddell area lies on the eastern flank and southern extremity of the Muswellbrook Dome, extending from Hebden in the north, to Jerry's Plains in the south, and the rocks under consideration belong to the Tomago Stage of the Upper Coal Measures. On the north they are truncated by the Hebden Thrust fault, which has a throw of about 4,500ft. (Raggatt, 1929). It has been pointed out by Stead1 that grains of considerable coarseness may be developed in steels containing from 3 to 5 per cent. of silicon, and in a previous paper2 the present author has shown that under the proper conditions of annealing single grains having an area of 50 sq. cm. may be obtained. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss in more detail the conditions promoting the growth of these grains, in the hope that the experiments described may throw some additional light upon the general problem of grain growth in metals. These silicon steels lend themselves particularly' well to such experiments because of the ease with which the change in structure may be followed and because of the fact that the effect of the carbon present is largely obliterated by the high percentage of silicon. This forms a solid solution with the iron, which acts very much like a pure metal. This alloy has been found to have but one critical point, viz., Ar2. This point, determined by Roberts-Austen for Hadfield's 4 per cent. Si alloy, was found to lie at 703" C. Vigouroux3, in working with pure Fe-Si alloys, finds this point to rise from 750" C. for 0.5 per cent. Si to 860" for 6 per cent. alloy, with a flat region in the curve from 3 to 4 per cent. Si. No accurate determination of this point has been undertaken by the present author, but it has been roughly determined to lie between 730" and 750:. In the preliminary experiments, some of which have been described in a previous paper, it was found that practically all of these steels, when annealed to 1,200" C. or higher, showed grains of comparatively large size. These grains varied in size, however, from about 4 sq. mm. to 50 sq. cm. (see Figs. 1 and 2) under the same conditions of anneal, and it was for the purpose of determining the cause of this difference in size that the experiments herein described were undertaken. "The distribution of the wettability of coals of different rank was determined by measurements of contact angles for individual particles. The contact angle was estimated from the equilibrium partitioning of a particle at the water/air interface. Using this technique contact angles were determined for a larger number of particles from a given sample and a frequency distribution of contact angle was obtained. The contact angle distribution was broad for all the coals tested with included an anthracite, a hvA bituminous and a sub-bituminous coal. In comparison, spherical particles of polymethylmethacrylaie gave a much narrower distribution. The distribution for irregular polyethylene particles was somewhat broader than that for the polymethylmethacrylate spheres but broader than that for the polymethylmethacrylate spheres but considerably narrower than that for coal. The broader wetting distribution for coal was attributed to differences in surface chemical properties.INTRODUCTIONA knowledge of the wetting properties of coals is very useful in coal cleaning by flotation and other processes in which separations are based on differential surface properties. The various methods available for measuring wetting characteristics include: contact angle, 1-2 time, time, 3-5 bubble attachment, 6 film flotation,7 displacement pressure, 8-9 penetration rate, 10-11 bubble pick-up, 12 induction time, 13 imbibition time, 14 and calorimetry. 15-16 Of all these methods, however, the measure¬ment of contact angle by the sessile drop and captive bubble techniques have been most widely used. Brady and Gauger"" demonstrated through the use of the contact angle method that the natural hydrophobicity of coal varied greatly from sample to sample. Subsequent experiments showed that this difference correlated well with rank, the larger contact angles generally being associated with the higher rank coals. 18-19 More recent studies by Aplan and co-workers' show that the wettability of various ranks of coals as determined by sessile drop and captive bubble methods is a more complex function of rank. The hydrophobicity of coal usually increases with rank up to about 80% fixed carbon (dmmf) and then decreases."

BHP Billiton Olympic Dam required a well-tested software product suitable for strategic optimisation and scheduling of options for a potential underground mining project. The company has a standard software package called Blasor® that is used for open pit optimisation of complex deposits such as iron ore, copper-gold-uranium and silver-lead-zinc. It applies a mixed integer programming formulation (MIP) to produce conceptual pushback designs and an optimised pushback sequence. Schedules can then be run on the resulting mine designs. Existing pushback designs can also be imported into the model and an optimum schedule generated. One of the key advantages of Blasor is that multiple strategic mine schedules can be quickly generated according to the various scenarios, options and constraints that are being investigated.It was realised that Blasor, if carefully configured, could be adapted for use in underground planning. The concept of using Blasor as an optimiser for underground strategic scenarios is to represent the underground stope and development data in the form and structure of an open pit mine. In simple terms, underground stoping areas are modelled in the form of pushbacks (phases) with vertical walls. The phase dependency tools in Blasor are used to link mine blocks and their access development drives. These underground phases are imported into the optimiser. Artificial block models are constructed using stope design tonnage and grade data at various fixed cut-offs. A variable cut-off grade model has also been developed using a method of parcels to represent each cut-off grade increment.So far, this approach has been successfully used to investigate the optimum stope design cut-off for various strategic options, the economic potential of a series of mining and processing configurations and to provide guidance on the optimum sequence for developing and mining the various stoping blocks in the resource. A pyrometallurgical process for recovering manganese from open-hearth furnace slags or low-grade manganiferous iron ores is described. The slag or ore is smelted in a blast furnace to produce spiegeleisen; the speigeleisen is then blown with air in a basic converter to give an oxide slag. This slag product contains 60 to 75 percent manganous oxide and may be considered a synthetic manganese ore. In the smelting operations coke rates for five test periods ranged from 3,255 to 4,130 lb per ton of spiegeleisen. The recovery of manganese in the spiegeleisen varied from 60 to 76 percent. Recovery increased to 83 percent when the open-hearth slag feed to the blast furnace was diluted with a high-? grade iron ore sinter to facilitate smelting. In blowing the spiegeleisen a cyclic procedure was developed that gave nearly 90 percent recovery of manganese in the slag product (synthetic ore) yet prevented excessive contamination of the slag by phosphorus and iron. The overall recovery of manganese was about 75 percent when iron ore sinter was used with the open-hearth slag in the smelting step. The metal remaining after oxidizing the manganese from the spiegeleisen contained approximately 3.5 percent phosphorus. It was refined in a basic converter by blowing with air in the presence of lime" A high--grade iron and a basic phosphate slag were produced.

"A computational model to investigate solid/liquid phase change transitions for binary alloy under directional solidification is presented. Conservation equations are developed by using an homogeneous formulation. A second order accuracy method of time and space based on finite volume approximation has been evaluated by comparing results to spectral solution for time-dependent solutal convection developping in a melted alloy. For extended model to solid/liquid interface effects time amplification of solutal perturbation injected near the interface is described before considering solutal convection is melt.IntroductionThe enthalpy method gives a front fixing approach for energy equation without introducing coordinate transformation. The interfare position is recovered a posteriori [1]. A number of authors have extended this approach so as to include the convection phenomena within the two phase 'mushy region' [2, 3, 4, 5, 6].We have developed a time-dependent enthalpy-porosity formulation for directional solidification [4, 6, 8]. The interaction between solid and liquid phases is modelised by a Darcien type force in the phase change area. The behaviour of the melt is similar with the flow of an incompressible fluid in a porous medium. This force is proportional to the relative phase velocity. It corresponds to a damping force depending on the anisotropic permeability of the 'mushy zone'. The permeability depends on the liquid fraction and on the size of·solidification microstructures. An informative discussion of a new slant on the general approach of continuum mechanics needed to analyze the formation of mushy zone is given in [12]. The method is extended to the presence of species diffusion: the solutal Stefan condition which expresses the solute incorporation or rejection across the interface is accounted implicitly in a species equation valid in all the domain [14, 15]."

Burra was the largest metalliferous mine in Aus- tralia between 1845 and 1860 and employed as many as 1000 men and boys. The workforce was predominantly Cornish, Burra being the first con- centration of Cornish folk in Australia. The sur- face and underground mining operations were typically Cornish and virtually all positions of responsibility were held by Cornishmen. Beam pumping and winding engines were imported from Cornwall and housed in traditional Cornish engi- nehouses. Burra had the first significant number of beam engines in Australia: six were installed between 1849 and 1861. These engines, ranging in size from 20 inches to 80 inches in diameter, were used for pumping, hauling, and driving Cornish roll crush- ers and dressing machinery. Derelict enginehouses of the great beam engines are a striking reminder of former mining activity in Cornwall and South Australia. In South Aus- tralia about 35 enginehouses were erected between 1848 and 1887, of which eight still remain, three of them at Burra (Figure 1). These remain as a tangible link with the Industrial Revolution.

Under the seventh 5-year plan (1986-90), the Chinese Government continued to implement reform and to open the country further to the outside world in order to accelerate the growth of its national economy. As a result of expanded foreign economic exchanges and domestic achievements in education, science and technology, and cultural and public health undertakings, the national economy was strengthened. In 1988, there was impressive growth in the Chinese economy. The gross national product (GNP) grew by 11.2070 reaching $373.4 billion; 2 the national income grew by 11.4070 to $310.9 billion. The major problem in the Chinese economy was the imbalance between high demand and insufficient supply. Chronic shortages resulted in price increases and high inflation, which averaged 19% for China as a whole and about 30% in urban areas. Macroeconomic stability took precedence over market-oriented reform initiative. Because of rapidly growing inflation, the Government re-imposed price controls and rationing in major cities in the fall of 1988. China continued to be a major world producer of minerals, metals, and fuels. Output of the principal commodities continued to rise. The largest in-crease in production was salt which rose 24% in output in 1988; followed by sulfuric acid, 14%; cement, 12%; soda ash, 9%; caustic soda, 7%; and steel, 6%. For fossil fuels, the increase in output of natural gas was 14% in 1988; followed by coal, 3%; and crude oil, 2%. The output of electricity by thermal-fired powerplants rose by 9% while that for hydroelectric power-plants rose 7%. Although China's overall energy output has increased annually since 1980, the growth in demand continued to outstrip the supply.

Votorantim Metais Zinco is a smelting facility which produces SHG zinc, zinc alloys, sulfuric acid, liquid SO2, copper sulfate, cadmium metal and silver concentrate. It is located at Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. This facility has been operating since 1980 and its current capacity is 95,000 tonnes of zinc per year, using mostly imported sulfide concentrates.The plant uses the conventional roast-leach electrowinning (RLE) process, in which iron is removed from the circuit as jarosite. The residues generated by the RLE process, which amount to about 200 t/day (dry weight), were until 10 years ago, deposited in tailing ponds having no impervious lining. More recently, jarosite and other wastes have been deposited in a properly built reservoir, but this is reaching its maximum capacity. In order to decommission these disposal operations and to reclaim the sites in an environmentally acceptable manner, Votorantim Metais concluded in 2004 a rehabilitation project for the old tailings pond and prepared detailed plans for managing the current and future disposal of jarosite-bearing residues. This paper describes the procedure for removing iron from the hydrometallurgical circuit and discusses the past and current status of the residue disposal sites, as well as the future challenges related to the environmentally acceptable handling of iron residues.

To compete in Today's Market, Mine Managers have two, often conflicting tasks. They are to improve productivity, allowing the mines to compete in our world markets and to improve the environment in which our miners must work. To Maintain and improve the environment to ever increasing acceptable levels requires monitoring. In years passed this required considerable labor, which was provided by the Ventilation Department. They continuously took manual samples using hand-held instruments, sampling gas level such as CO for fire and methane for explosive risks. In addition they took continuous air velocity readings with hand-held instruments which allow them to calculate the ventilation air movement in each area of the Mine. This manual gathering of information was not only expensive and slow but marginal at best. It was marginal because the gas sampling was sporadic rather than continuous, as sample reading taken in one part of the mine would likely not be repeated for another 8 hours. If problems did occur, they likely went unobserved until they reached crisis proportion.

Many reports and papers have been delivered on projects under construction or already in operation, but we believe there are few that have been written about projects yet to be built specifically dealing with advanced mine and environmental planning. This paper describes such planning for Atlantic Richfield Company's Black Thunder mine. Project planning is a cyclic phenomenom involving four broadly overlapping planning steps (Figure 1). The demands of the public include needs that can be satisfied through planned resource development. Using a base of information that partly exists and must in part be gathered and updated, the preplanned development can be, evaluated. The evaluation process, with built-in environmental constraints leads to an implementation procedure. Implementation results in the development, including the release of the affected area to other public demands that follow.

Materiais poliméricos sofrem danos estruturais ao serem submetidos à radiação X. Estes danos podem causar reticulação, quebra de ligações entre outros danos. Em diversos serviços de radiodiagnostico e de radioterapia é utilizado placa de etileno vinil acetato, EVA, para auxiliar o posicionamento de pacientes crianças ate 2 anos em radiografias de tórax. O objetivo deste trabalho é verificar se este material é adequado para ser utilizado nestes serviços. Para tanto, amostras do material foram submetidas a dose de 25 kGy e avaliados por espectrometria de infra vermelho com transformada de Fourier, e a superfície por medidas de rugosidade e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados indicam que o material apresenta degradação com dose de 5 kGy e aumento da rugosidade.

In 2005, we automated a forklift-based Hot Metal Carrier to be capable of typical metal transfer operations around a smelter. The project was highly successful and the vehicle has demonstrated hundreds of hours of live autonomous operations to thousands of people from industry and the public. As a result of the exposure and success of the project, we have expanded its focus to demonstrate how various technology components can be utilised to gain benefits in other areas of industrial operations. These include asset tracking, vehicle usage analysis, pedestrian detection and infrastructure profiling. Each of these components was derived from the core autonomous vehicle technology suite and has shown a high potential for improving safety and efficiency of vehicle-related operations, and improved diagnostic processes for measuring deformations of bakes and furnaces. The autonomous vehicle project and its extended technologies are described in this paper.

The deportment and speciation of trace elements during mining and minerals processing is becoming an area of increasing concern with regards to potential health and environment risks. The use of chemical modelling can enhance our basic understanding of the deportment and speciation of trace metals under conditions present in gold processing solutions, and assist in laboratory and field investigations. In this paper, we report the results of chemical speciation modelling using the JESS software package for the trace toxic elements Pb, Cd, Hg, Se and Te in cyanidation solutions of varying salinity and relate the models to experimental data. The speciation of mercury is examined in detail.

- Introductory IN 1882, The Arizona Copper Co. Ltd., acquired producing copper mines at Metcalf and Morenci (locally called Longfellow). Metcalf is situated a distance of 7 miles, and Morenci a distance of 6 miles from the general office of the company at Clifton, Ariz. A reduction works with five blast furnaces was built in the center of the town of Clifton in 1884 and operated until January, 1914. Concentration of oxidized ores was begun in 1890-1891, in a mill built adjoining the smelter, and in October, 1893, a leaching process was started for treating tailings from the oxide mill. A sulphide concentrator with 300 tons capacity was built at Clifton and started treating chalcocite ores in July, 1896. This was the first mill to treat low-grade copper-sulphide ores successfully. Another concentration mill for sulphide ores was erected at Morenci in 1900. The, sulphide mills are now being remodeled to treat ores by concentration and flotation, with a capacity of 4,000 tons at Morenci and 500 tons at Clifton. The leaching plant has not been running since September, 1914. The average yearly production from this company's mines and reduction works from 1885 to date has been: Pounds 10 years ended 1894 6,864,902 10 years ended 1904 20,439,614 10 years ended 1914 : 32,665,905 Part of year 1915, to Sept. 12 30,206,106 4 months of 1916, to June 15,964,840 June, 1916...: ? 4,900,000 Construction on a new smelting plant was started in February, 1912, and finished in February, 1914. "Since it was first identified in 1817, selenium has received considerable interest. Native selenium and a few selenium minerals were discovered several decades later. With the increasing number of selenium minerals, the occurrence of selenium minerals became the focus of much research. A great number of selenium deposits were reported all over the world, although few independent selenium deposits were discovered. Selenium is obtained mainly as a byproduct of other metals, and is produced primarily from the anode mud of copper refineries. This paper presents a comprehensive review of selenium minerals, as well as the treatment of copper refinery anode slimes for the recovery of selenium. Our focus is on the selenium minerals, including their discovery and occurrence, and the distribution of selenium resources. In addition, the main methods of recovering selenium from copper anode slimes are summarized. IntroductionSelenium (Se) was first observed in 1817 in a laboratory (Greenwood et al., 1984). The discovery of selenium was made by the Swedish chemist J.J. Berzelius and J.G. Gahn, who isolated selenium from a red residue in sulphuric acid from pyrite mined at Fahlun, Sweden. Selenium was named from the Greek word selene (moon), since it resembled tellurium, which had been discovered a few years earlier and named from the Latin word tellus (Earth).After the first observation of selenium in the laboratory, selenium received considerable interest. In 1954, E.P. Kaiser pointed out that Se is enriched in sulphide ores and often associated with Bi, Co, Sn etc. (Kaiser 1954). In 1959, Hawley and Nichol investigated selenium in Canadian sulphide minerals, and presented the content of selenium in sulphide from several deposits of different types. They also proposed that Se is enriched in lowtemperature hydrothermal pyrite (Hawley and Nichol, 1959). The thermodynamic conditions for forming native selenium and selenium minerals in sedimentary rocks were discussed, as well as geochemical behaviour of selenium near the oxidation zones of sulphides in the 1970s (Howard III, 1977; Zhu et al., 2003). Zhu et al. examined the morphology, features, and genesis of native selenium from Yutangba, Enshi City, Hubei Province, China in 2004, and pointed out, from the different forms of native Se, that selenium can be activated,transformed, remobilized, and enriched at sites such as in the unsaturated subsurface zone or in the saturated zone (Zhu et al., 2005). The transport and deposition of selenium in felsic volcanic-hosted massive sulphide deposits of the Yukon Territory, Canada was studied and reported by Layton- Matthews et al. (2005)."

"IntroductionIN UNDERGROUND mining operations, the mine hoist has become one of the most important and one of the most expensive single pieces of equipment. As the means of transporting men and materials to the face, broken ore to the mill, and waste to the dump, it is often the very lifeline of a mine and must operate with dependability and efficiency or the whole operation will suffer. The mine hoist has become synonymous with safety. In few other types of mechanical equipment do so many men so frequently and completely place their lives. In Canada, more has probably been done to assure safe hoisting than in most other countries, but, unfortunately, this has resulted, in many cases, in the mines having to pay a high price for equipment. Hoist manufacturers have carried out much research in recent years in the endeavour to keep down these costs and at the same time maintain or improve the efficiency and safety of their products. Broadly classified, the bases for design research are dependability, efficiency, safety, and first cost.Probably the greatest single factor influencing the design of mine hoists was the introduction of electric motor drives. It was not until about 1905 that an effective start was made in the development of electric mine hoists, and then only with machines of small size. From that time on, however, progress was rapid, as may be gauged from the fact that by 1910 one large group of mines in Johannesburg had in use, or on order, fifty-four three-phase hoists and four Ward-Leonard. type hoists."

The Melbourne City Link Project is a privately funded road infrastructure project linking three significant existing freeways in the vicinity of the Central Business District. The State Government, through the Melbourne City Link Authority, has contracted Transurban to build, own and operate City Link for a concession period of 34 years before the road network is transferred to the State. Transurban has a contract with Transfield Obayashi Joint Venture (TOJV) to design and construct the works. The project is divided into the southern and western sections and the tunnel works comprised the significant component of the Southern Link. Outside of the cut and cover tunnels at the portals, the driven tunnels component was constructed by TOJV direct labour. TOJV subcontracted all design work to a joint venture of Hyder Consulting and CMPS&F (Hyder/CMP). The geology in the tunnel corridor and generally below the city of Melbourne is highly variable and constantly changing. The tunnels were driven, for the most part, in siltstone and sandstone of the Silurian age, but also intersected overlying basalts and clays. The Silurian bedrock is a fractured aquifer that is connected to overlying alluvial aquifers. Consequently, the construction of the tunnels was a complex engineering task. This paper details the operational relationships and procedures developed to deliver a design that was aligned to the construction constraints and delivered an end product that met all technical, quality, cost and program goals.

The reliability of mining systems is generally low due to their harsh working conditions. Currently, efforts for improving mining system reliability are often made in isolation. This practice could substantially limit the effectiveness of the efforts on overall reliability improvement of the mining system. To enhance the overall reliability of mining systems, an integrated improvement approach is necessary. In this paper, we developed a framework for integrated mining system reliability improvement to address this issue. In this framework, there are five major components including data integration, business process integration, hardware integration, software integration, and analysis/decision integration, but we only focus on the integrated reliability analysis which is important to the analysis/decision integration. The reliability analysis considers the interactions between machines, and the impacts of design, operation, maintenance, automation and working environment on the overall system reliability. These multiple interactions present a big challenge to accurate reliability prediction. In this paper, we for the first time systematically investigated integrated reliability analysis approaches for dealing with this challenge using novel models and methods, including covariate hazard models, intelligent reliability prediction approach, and complex system modeling methods. While these models and methods have found some successful applications in other industries, they in general have not been effectively used for the reliability analysis of mining systems. Our study results show that the system integration approach is applicable to mining systems and can be used for developing a computer aided integration system for the implementation of the integrated reliability improvement approach.
