The Colloquium, which was highly successful, was held concurrently with the 1988 Electra Mining Exhibition. The Gulf Coastal plain of the southern United States is that area bordering for a large part, the Gulf of Mexico and extending inland and northward to the main interior highland region. It is more or less V-shaped and includes the States of Florida, extreme southern Alabama, all .of Mississippi and Louisiana, the eastern and southern half of Arkansas, and the eastern, southeastern, and southern portions of Texas. While the contents of this paper apply to. the Gulf Coastal plain in general, they are intended to refer more specifically to that portion of the plain included between the 90th and 97th meridians, and the 29th and 33d parallels, an area that may be described geographically as comprising western Mississippi, all of Louisiana, part of eastern and all of south-eastern Texas. It is within this area that numerous and prolific oil pools have been developed during the last 17 years.

Flotation of the carbonate, oxide and silicate minerals of copper (malachite, azurite, chrysocolla) has been the subject of much research in recent years, but few effective solutions to this problem have been found. With decreasing reserves of sulfide minerals, the economic recovery of these "oxides" appears to be an important source of copper for the future. Xanthates have been known for many years to be malachite collectors (1), but only at very high dosages, or at lower dosages following activation of the mineral by sulfide ion. Dewitt and Batchelder (2, 3) found that chelating agents such as certain oximes were collectors for malachite and azurite, but also required high reagent dosages. Fuerstenau (4) has suggested, for example, that potassium octylhydroxamate may be an effective collector for malachite, On the other hand, Balberyszski (5) has found that oxide minerals may be completely sulfidized at high temperatures with gaseous sulfur or H2S, and then floated with conventional collectors. None of the above approaches appear to offer an economically effective method for the direct flotation of these oxide minerals.

"Getting minerals out of ores is messy, but mineral processors learn to have fun with it. Celebrating the innate joys of the industry was the theme of this year’s Colorado MPD Conference. At the same time, attendees dug deeper for insights into problems that continue to dog the community, including tailings dam crises, water resource challenges, and a dwindling number of academics to teach and train the workforce (see box).Tailings dam crisesMatt Fuller of Tierra Group International Ltd. brought some of the audience to tears with his impassioned talk on “The Infamous Legacy of Upstream Tailings Dams,” which won the conference’s Lou Cope award for best paper. The talk was especially poignant coming on the heels of the January tailings dam failure in Vale S.A.’s Córrego do Feijão iron ore mine in Brazil, the latest in a series of catastrophic dam failures over the past decade that includes the Fundão dam failure in 2015.Noting that the two dams share a common characteristic — both are upstream tailing dams — Fuller explained the three basic dam construction methods and why certain upstream tailing dams are susceptible to failure (Fig. 1). The downstream, centerline and upstream methods denote the direction the centerline of the dam crest moves with each successive raise in elevation of the dam. With the downstream dam, the foundation for future raises is essentially the same as that of the starter dam, he explained. With the centerline dam, half of the dam is constructed on the same foundation as the starter dam, and with the upstream dam, each successive raise is built out over the top of the tailings.“Downstream dams are expensive to build because each successive raise is bigger, so the sustaining capex to build them keeps growing,” Fuller said. Many decades ago, mine owners realized they could construct a starter dam, put their tailings through a hydrocyclone, generate a coarse sand fraction and stack the sand over the top of the tailings to build the next raise. “Then, there is no sustaining capex, it all comes out of operations,” Fuller added. The footprint is smaller, and it is a favorable means of retaining the tailings."

"Cast iron possesses many superior characteristics caused from precipitated graphite structure, for example, castability, wear resistance, solid lubrication, damping capacity. But the more graphite hyper-eutectic cast iron contains, the lower its mechanical strength becomes, because graphite gives a negative effect to strength of cast iron. In addition, primary graphite tends to segregate during solidification, so uniform materials are difficult to be produced.In this study, authors introduced semi-solid processing in developing new and high quality cast iron. A series of semi-solid processing experiments were carried out to clarify the effect of stirring condition; solidification temperature and etc. on microstructures and characteristics of cast iron. In particular much attention is paid to the appearance of ternary eutectic zone at the final stage of solidification. As the results advanced hyper-eutectic cast iron was obtained with high quality of both the mechanical strength and wear resistance. As for the mechanical strength, 300MPa and 0.60% are obtained as the tensile strength and the elongation values, respectively, under the controlled stirring condition. This indicates that semi-solid processed hyper-eutectic cast iron is used prospectively without spheroidization.IntroductionCast iron has various good properties such as wear resistance, solid lubrication, damping capacity and machinability. The characteristics of cast iron are mainly decided by graphite structure, namely graphite shape and its distribution in the matrix. Mechanical strength of cast iron is large in the case of small quantity of graphite particles which are precipitated uniformly, however, it becomes small in the case of large quantity of graphite precipitated flakily."

It is now fourteen years since we German ironmasters, in considerable number, visited the United States on the occasion of the Philadelphia Exposition, and found the iron metallurgy of this country, as must be frankly confessed, in an advanced stage of development not previously suspected by us. At that time the United States already occupied, as now, the second rank, with Germany in the third, the product of pig-iron for that year being, in Great Britain, 6550, in this country, 2093, and in Germany, 1850 kilotons.* This relative position has not been changed. The present annual product of the three countries is, in round numbers, Great Britain, 8380, the United States, 7790, and Germany, 4530 kilotons. But the proportion of the United States, which was, in 1876, but 15 per cent. of the world's product, has now advanced to 30 per cent. When we left America in 1876, it was not only with gratitude for cordial hospitality and for the liberality with which our professional colleagues here had opened to our inspection whatever was worthy of notice in our special field, but also with the conviction that we had collected a great treasure of new and interesting information which we could utilize for the benefit of our German Fatherland. Particularly the achievements of the never-to-be-forgotten Holley in the field of Bessemer practice, set us an inspiring example for imitation in our own country. MIM Holdings Limited has acquired a reputation for the successful application of R&D to develop break-through technologies for the mining industry. The Isa Process tank-house technology has been licensed to copper refineries throughout the world, and almost 40 per cent of the worldÆs copper is refined using this technology. Isasmelt copper and lead smelting technology is either in use, or is currently being installed, by eight companies in eight countries around the world. Jameson Cell technology is widely used in the coal mining industry and increasingly in the base-metal industry. The IsaMills developed at Mount Isa and McArthur River made it possible to develop the McArthur River and George Fisher orebodies. This paper will address the need for innovation and then discuss the development of the IsaMill and Isasmelt technologies. It will conclude with some comments about why MIM has been so successful in developing such technologies.

This paper presents the results of on-going investigations on the performance of support systems in Québec underground mines. The focus of these investigations is on site observations complemented by laboratory investigations. Of particular interest is deducing the corrosion rate, at selected mine sites, as determined by the installation of monitoring coupons.

The Hail Creek coking coal deposits are situated in Central Queensland, inland from the port of Mackay. A joint venture of Australian and Japanese companies has been formed to examine the feasibility of developing these deposits for sale on the overseas markets. The project envisaged involves large scale mining operations and on site benefic- iation to wash the coal to marketable quality. Infrastructure items include a 140 kilometre railway to the coast, a port facility, and at Ilail Creek, power and water supplies, roads and communications, and accommodation for a substantial workforce. The need for town development and the responsibility for the development are established. The town planning implications of coal production at the rate of five million long tons of washed coal per annum from open cut and underground mines are considered. A procedure for estimating the size of the town is expounded and the town size is determined. The factors influencing site selection are explained and a site is suggested. A method of designing the town is described and comments are made on developmental aspects. Spaciousness and preservation featuring the natural environment will be the theme of the town development.

This paper presents an overview of the innovative methods for gold and silver extraction that have been put into actual practice in North America since 1987. It is an update of a paper of the same title which was presented by Sass and Mansanti at the AMC conference in San Francisco in 1987. New practices, new equipment and variations of older practices that have been introduced in the last five years are discussed in each of the following categories: process selection trends, comminution, gravity concentration, flotation, oxidation, agitated and vat leaching, heap leaching, solution concentration and purification, zinc precipitation, electrowinning, tailings disposal detoxification, and reclamation.

This paper presents an innovative ground support solution developed to construct a tunnel cross-passage for the MUNI Metro Turnback (MMT) Project. A “soft center” jet grouting approach was designed to provide solid ground support while maintaining a soft center to allow for hand-mining of a 2.44 m (8 ft.) wide, 3.66 m (12 ft.) tall and 4.6 m (15 ft.) long cross-passage through soft Bay Mud. Prohibitive costs and schedule impacts associated with mining under compressed air (at the time being used for main tunnel construction) were the catalysts to search for alternative methods for cross-passage construction. Limited surface disruption, relatively low costs, ease of subsequent excavation, nominal schedule impacts and proven local success of jet grouting were key factors in selecting and designing this method of ground support.

The western phosphate field, comprising parts of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah, contains one of the world's largest known reserves of phosphate rock. Although phosphate-rock deposits of good-grade have been known since before the turn of the century and production has been recorded since 1906, real development of this important field did not begin until immediately after World War II. Since then fertilizer-manufacturing facilities using western phosphate rock have been expanded, and three electric-furnace plants for producing elemental phosphorus have been installed, resulting in a rise in mine production from 323,955 long tons2/ in 1945 to 1,653,916 long tons3/ in 1953. Interest in the field is increasing, and it is reasonable to expect that the western phosphate industry will continue to expand. Before 1945 all western production was from underground mines. In that year the first strip mine in the field was started near Montpelier, Idaho,~ and in sub-sequent years a number of other open-pit mines were opened in southeast Idaho and western Wyoming. At present the major part of the production comes from surface mines. Underground mining has continued, and new underground mines have been opened in the field, but recent exploration by operating companies has been aimed primarily at developing additional deposits suitable for low-cost surface mining. Preliminary reserve estimates by the Federal Geological Survey5/ indicate that only a very small part of the total resource may be recovered by surface methods and that the industry eventually must depend largely on underground mining. Because one function of the Bureau of Mines is promoting the conservation and development of the Nation's mineral resources, it is appropriate that research be conducted to develop low-cost maximum-recovery underground mining methods applicable to western phosphate-rock deposits.

It is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly some recent large power stations for blast furnaces, where the blast is exclusively supplied by gas engines using furnace gas. The stations are given in the chronological order in which they were designed, in order to indicate the various improvements suggested by experience. Fig. 1 shows the blowing-engine station of the Bethlehem Steel Co. at Bethlehem. Although the picture shows only five blowing engines, the house now contains 11 engines. In the diagrammatic plan the arrow shows the position and direction of camera. This station handles five modern blast furnaces of 450 to 500 ions capacity each. In this, as in all the other stations described in this paper, each furnace is blown by two single tandem gas engines. Ten engines are thus required for five furnaces, leaving one single tandem spare engine. This spare capacity has been shown by several years' experience at Bethlehem to be adequate to insure continuous operation. The engines in the Bethlehem station are right hand and left hand, arranged in pairs. The outboard bearings of each pair are close together so that there is not room for passageway between them. On the right of the picture are shown the inclined drums communicating with the cold-blast lines outside of building, so that any engine may be operated on any furnace. The illustration shows four cold-blast gate valves with pipes passing through wall, but since the photograph was taken the drums have been extended to take care of a fifth valve for a fifth furnace. At the extreme back of the picture can be seen the tubs of three twin vertical-horizontal Southwark steam blowing engines, which, although of modern design and as good as new, are not operated because of the greatly reduced blowing cost shown by the gas blowing engines. The next station built is shown in Fig. 2. This is the plant of the Minnesota Steel Co. at Duluth, Minn., and is at present constructed for five engines, to handle two furnaces, with one spare engine. The engines are of practically the same size as those at Bethlehem. El presente trabajo describe el método de muestreo para la evaluación y cubicación del tajo a cielo abierto en Cerro de Pasco. Para ello, primero se describe la geología general de la zona de Cerro de Pasco para conocer y resolver los problemas encontrados en la explotación, encontrándose una irregularidad en la distribución de valores, como en la concentración de minerales. En consecuencia, se elaboró una serie de medidas que respondan al sistema de evaluación utilizado, tales como: la necesidad de efectuar una reevaluación de la zona en cuestión, el remuestreo de la mina, la impracticabilidad de hacer una exploración a través de sondajes, el empleo de algún medio mecánico para la extracción de las muestras, la implantación de un sistema especial para el archivamiento de los resultados de los ensayos y así evaluarlos rápidamente, y la necesidad de conocer los pesos específicos de los diversos tipos de minerales concentrados para calcular el tonelaje con precisión.

The Challenger Gold deposit was discovered in 1995 by Dominion Mining Ltd in a remote western area of the Gawler Craton in South Australia. Mine development commenced in 2002 with initial production from an open pit supplemented by ore from a very small adjacent auxiliary pit. Development of the underground mine commenced in 2004. The orebody plunge of just less than 30 degrees requires careful attention to mine design. Production from the M1 orebody, with less than 800 ounces per vertical metre (ovm) and very limited æsurgeÆ capacity, requires careful scheduling and implementation to ensure continuity of ore feed for milling. Initial production results from underground stopes included more dilution than anticipated. The narrow, high-grade zones proved to have much more complex geometry than early interpretations had indicated. Greatly improved understanding of the mineralisation controls resulted in important changes being made to the underground mine design and method. Coupled with careful control of development and drilling and blasting practices, this resulted in an immediate reduction in dilution and high recoveries of the resource. The benefits of these changes flowed through in the 2005/06 financial year, resulting in a 150 per cent increase in gold production to 108 080 oz and a sharp reduction in cash operating costs to A$280/oz. This was followed in 2006/07 with production of 108 91 oz of gold at an operating cost of $309/oz and in 2007/08 with 109 326 oz of gold at $367/oz. Production to June 2008 has been mainly from the M1 orebody, with the lowest stoping to date on the 580 m Level (615 m below surface) above development mining on the 520 Level. The rate of vertical advance of mining this orebody has averaged 150 vertical metres per year. The increased current combined JORC compliant resource and reserve position of over one million ounces, now includes the M2 and M3 orebodies with a current total average gold inventory up to 1400 - 1500 ovm. Exploration has intersected other shoots and all shoots are open at depth. The adjacent M2 and M3 orebodies are being developed for stoping. The narrow width of these zones from 1 m up to 4 m will require continued focus on ore zone definition, accurate development and careful drill and blast practice. In addition, to minimise cost increases in the current period of rapidly escalating labour, equipment, consumables and energy costs, high productivities will need to be maintained to allow the established rapid mining advance to continue at low unit costs.

The U.S. cement industry experienced its best year ever during 2004 in terms of production and shipments of cement. Clinker, portland and masonry cements production and shipments were up considerably. Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 87.75 Mt (96.73 million st), an increase of 5.4 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker was estimated to be 91.6 Mt (101 million st), up 5 Mt (5.5 million st) from 2003.

Foamed cement packs offer a viable alternative to conventional timber or other forms of packs for permanent underground support. These packs comprise steel mesh and hoop containment with an outer bag for the grout; woven, laminated polypropylene fabric being ideal for the purpose. The grout is supplied in 25kg bags and fed into a purpose ? designed foam placer machine which delivers the foamed grout directly to the packs from 60 metre long delivery hose. Foamed cement grout as a fill material offers attractive properties for support packs, in summary these are: Variable Grout Strength Grout strength is controlled by the grout density being delivered from the placer machine. This can be changed by the machine settings. Strength Development Fast rate of strength development is possible so that support is available quickly. Pack yield The foamed grouts are compressible so that yielding of the grout pack can be achieved without loss of support. Rate of Filling Three sizes of placer machine are available, these use one, two, or three 25kg bags per minute of grout, pack filling time is therefore a matter of minutes, a typical 0.75m diameter pack x 1.2m high taking some 17 minutes to fill. Tests in a 1000 tonne press have confirmed that the above characteristics can be achieved with foamed cement packs at acceptable cost. This will be illustrated in the paper with experience to date.

The critical surface tension of wetting (?c) of Cu2S, FeS2, PbS, and MoS2 were determined by plotting flotation recovery versus YLV which was arranged by methanol, and Extra-polating to % R = 0. ?c values ranged from 26 dyne cm-1 for MoS2 to 49 dyne cm-1 for PbS and elemental sulfur gave a value of 31.5 dyne cm-1. Minerals exhibiting natural flotability of different extents, could be separated from their mixtures in the absence of conventional flotation reagents, but controlled ?LV. Correlations between non-stoichiometry and degree of natural hydrophobicity for MOS2 are also reported in this paper.

Since gold was first discovered, mining development in the West Australian goldfields has been heavily dependent on the location of groundwater both for potable and mineral processing supplies . The location of adequate and economic sources of water has been a constant challenge to both explorers and developers throughout the history of the goldfields. The provision of a piped supply from Mundaring in 1903 greatly alleviated pressure on scarce resources, lowered mining costs and permitted the orderly development of infrastructure. However, increases in the demand for water resulting from new mineral discoveries over the past three decades has led to renewed pressures for more local supplies to be established. Wide-ranging groundwater exploration took place in the late 1960's and early 1970's, also, more recently, in support of intensified gold exploration. The collation and interpretation of the hydrogeological data from the whole goldfields region indicates that despite a low mean annual rainfall of between 180 and 350 mm, quite marked differences exist between the rates of groundwater recharge in different parts of the area, In general, these can be shown to diminish in a southerly direction contrary to a trend towards increases in annual rainfall. Recharge rates are related mainly to differences in rock weathering pattern, geological structure and physiography. The same differences have controlled the pattern of groundwater salinity and the magnitude of groundwater storages associated with the palaeodrainages. In the vicinity of the northern and western watersheds with the Gascoyne, the superficial sediments tend to be thin, may have calcrete in the section and contain moderate storages of brackish or even fresh water. This contrasts with the lower regions of the palaeodrainages where calcrete is absent and deeper erosion has permitted the accumulation of relatively large thicknesses of fine-grained sediments which are saturated with hypersaline water and constitute substantial storages. Account must be taken of these characteristics if water supply sources are to be optimised to meet the growing demands for groundwater in the region.
