Retreat or pillar recovery mining redistributes the overburden weight onto the adjacent coal pillars in a room-and-pillar section. The additional stress and the resultant energy stored in the remaining pillars can become so great that pillars may bump or violently fail. An investigation at the Gary No.2 Mine was conducted to examine the effectiveness of the thin pillar mining method for mitigating bump occurrences. Field observations were made and instruments were installed to monitor pillar behavior during extraction. Stress monitoring instruments and roof-to-floor convergence stations were installed in pillars and entries and crosscuts, respectively. Results indicated that high pillar stress concentrations occurred in these bump-prone geologic conditions. The thin pillar mechanism, the creation and progressive outby movement of an expanded yield zone, was also monitored through the instruments. The expanded yield zone, a result of using thin pillars in a highly stressed pillar line area, mitigates bump risk.

Growing awareness of selenium bioaccumulation has resulted in selenium management becoming an important environmental issue for mining operations. Selen-IX™ is a novel ion exchange based technology developed by BioteQ to provide an effective solution for removing selenium oxyanions from mine impacted water to single-digit µg/L levels. The technology offers significant potential benefits when compared to incumbent biological treatment processes, including substantially reduced capital and operating costs and significantly reduced production of a selenium-containing sludge for final disposal. This paper reviews the key features of the Selen-IX™ process and presents the results of recent pilot testing on selenium impacted water.

of high specific gravity, resistant minerals that form from mechanical concentration by waves, currents, and winds in marginal-marine environments. These sediments are enriched in critical minerals such as titanium, zirconium, and REE. Cretaceous beach-placer sandstones are found in the Colorado Plateau of northwestern New Mexico. Originally discovered by airborne radiometric surveys for uranium in the 1950s, these beach-placer sandstones are being re-examined with modern methods as potential sources for critical minerals. Selected beach-placer sandstones have been sampled, mapped with ground radiometric surveys, and analyzed with whole-rock and trace element geochemical methods. Mineralogy is being determined with optical methods, XRD, and EMPA. Zircon, rutile, ilmenite, and monazite are the primary heavy minerals of interest found in the studied deposits. Initial results show that the sandstones contain up to 1.4% total REE, 29.4% TiO2, and an estimated 4.9% ZrO2. Chondrite-normalized REE diagrams show distinct light REE and minor heavy REE enrichment, as well as pronounced negative Eu anomalies for each deposit.

Since the last Iron Control in Hydrometallurgy Symposium in Montreal in 1996, the Kokkola zinc plant has increased its capacity from 175,000 t/y to 280,000 t/y by installing an atmospheric concentrate leaching process, which has also affected iron control in the leaching circuit. Major changes have been made at the jarosite residue pond; a subterranean plastic wall reinforced with bentonite and cement has been built around the pond. A new water collecting system that is used for groundwater level control in the pond area was installed. With these two investments in the pond area, it is now possible to prevent any seepage flow from the pond into the surrounding environment. Water pumped from the residue pond is treated in the water treatment plant. This paper describes the behavior of iron in Kokkola's current leaching processes. The treatment of the jarosite, the improvements to the residue pond and the water treatment process are also described.

The coal-bearing areas of Kansas cover approximately 18,800 square miles (23 percent of the state's total area). Coal in Kansas ranges from lignite to high volatile bituminous, located principally in the south-eastern part of the state. Kansas reserves are estimated to be 987,500,000 tons, approximately 0.2 percent of U.S. reserves. Coal beds generally occur in thin seams up to five feet thick. The overburden-to-coal stripping ratios in Kansas are among the highest in the nation, typically 20 to 1, with some ratios up to 35 to 1. The first commercial coal mining operation in Kansas opened in 1865 at Fort Scott in Bourbon County. As in other states, coal production in Kansas increased during the industrial revolution, and then fell as industry converted to alternative fuels. Production peaked in 1916 and 1917, with annual production of 7,250,000 tons. Coal production today is by surface mining methods. The Kansas regulatory program was approved April 14, 1982; the Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 1, 1982; and the emergency program authority was approved January 10,1989.

Research in the field of cut-off grade optimisation has shown a relationship between cut-off grade, project life and net present value (NPV). Lane’s theory demonstrates that cut-off grades can be optimised in order to maximise project profitability. Although the theory forms the basis for many open pit mining projects, application of the theory in underground mining remains limited to-date. The main reason for this is the complex interaction between all processes in underground mine planning, which makes it difficult to apply Lane’s mathematical optimisation approach.Recently a new stope optimiser product was released. The AMS Stope Optimiser automates the design of underground stopes at user-defined cut-off grades and allows for rapid evaluation of mine designs at different cut-off grades. Using this software, an optimisation approach was developed and validated on an underground gold deposit in northern Sweden. Potential project NPV increased by approximately 30 per cent when using this new approach.Spatial grade uncertainty in mineral resources was identified to be a major risk in underground stope design. The optimisation approach was further extended to account for grade risk using estimated and stochastic simulated resource models. The resulting optimisation process accounts for grade risk early in the design process and reduces the risk of a stope not meeting the cut-off grade with subsequent financial loss.CITATION:Bootsma, M T, Alford, C, Benndorf, J and Buxton, M W N, 2014. Brazil is a major mineral and metal producer, has magnificent fauna and flora, and superb architecture. In 1693 gold was discovered in Ouro Preto and Brazil produced about half of the world's gold. In 1726 diamond was discovered in the region of Tijuco in the Province of Minas Gerais, 150 km east of Bello Horizonte. The country became independence from Portugal in 1822 as the Brazilian Empire. In 1876, an Englishman succeeded in obtaining from the Amazon region seeds of rubber trees and secretly transferred them to England, where they were planted in the royal gardens at Kew. Some of the seedlings which spouted were sent to Ceylon and Singapore. Thus, began the rubber industry in the East. Today, Brazil is the largest producer of niobium, and produces a large number of other metals. The Mineral Research Center in Rio de Janeiro is the countries main Government establishment for mineral research. The country has been a republic since 1889 with its capital in Brazilia.

The use and application of shotcrete for ground support in the Asia Pacific Region is as diverse as the countries that make up this region. This paper will attempt to describe the many methods used on selected projects within that region. The project description(s) will include project logistics, equipment, mix design, products and application methods utilized along with specifications and performance results (where available). The author will attempt to reach a conclusive opinion on the success, or nonsuccess, of the various shotcrete methods employed and the development of shotcrete within the Asia Pacific Region.

THE Industrial Minerals Division this year held no individual sessions of its own except the business meeting Tuesday afternoon. One session was held jointly with the Society of Economic Geologists, one with the Milling Methods Committee, and two with the Society of Economic Geologists and the Mining Geology Committee. At all of these meetings the attendance was better than usual and the Tuesday afternoon session, with nearly 400 present, probably set a new record for the Division. Joint sessions seem extremely popular when papers of mutual interest are presented. On Monday afternoon, mica was the predominating subject. The North Carolina mines provided most of the information presented, although the discussion brought out similarities with the New England mines. B. C. Burgess particularly stressed the fact that with the existing curtailment of mica from India it is necessary to get the most mica in the shortest time from the mines in this country. He said that the Colonial Mica Corp. hopes to have 1000 mines operating in the near future. This seems a great number, but when one considers that these mines employ from 3 to 28 men, mostly nearer the low figure, the output of each mine is relatively small. Although the price of mica is from six to ten times the prewar price, the yield of 8 to 150 lb. of mica per ton of raw ore does not provide high returns to the producer.

In the present number of Mining and Metallurgy, issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Institute, it appears appropriate to chronicle a few of the interesting incidents respecting its early life. We are fortunate in being able to cull the following notes from unpublished manuscripts of Doctor Raymond and Doctor Drinker, than whom no other members could have written with greater exactness and fidelity. THE seventh decade of the 19th century may be said to have marked an. era in the history of the world. Industrially and .commercially it was marked by the wide application and utilization of discoveries already made, which came to their full effect at this period in steamships, railways, telegraph and cable lines; the standardization of parts in machines, from watches to locomotives; the use of 'dynamite, antiseptic surgery, the open-hearth steel process, the compressed-air rock-drill, the electric generator, and the Gatling gun. Through the opening of the Suez canal in 1870 the maritime trade of the world was revolutionized, sailing vessels were supplanted by steamers, while ocean cables and ocean "tramps" brought about far more rapid movement of commerce than had before been experienced. Politically, this period was marked by the sudden birth of the German empire and the beginning of that intensive internal development of the national resources of that empire in preparation for colonial extension and war, the amazing result of which has been made evident by the recent world conflict. Research performed by the U.S. insurance industry has determined that mine subsidence is uninsurable. Consequently, the insurance industry has decided not to voluntarily offer mine subsidence insurance. The U.S. Department of the Interior has long been investigating the effects of mine subsidence. These investigations have resulted in Federal regulations and controls of mine subsidence. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report generally describes mine subsidence, the development of mine subsidence insurance programs, and the eight current mine subsidence insurance programs in the United States. The States that have these subsidence programs include Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Major aspects of the programs include history, administrative and operational procedures, insurable structures, recognition of mine subsidence, major exclusions, claims, insurance premiums, and the economic health of each program. Addresses of agencies involved with mine subsidence insurance are also given. Information within this report can be useful for residential and commercial property owners and mine operators. States that are considering starting or have an existing mine subsidence insurance program can also use this report as a model for initiating or modifying their programs.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an experimental study with liquid and gaseous hydrogen to determine the hazards associated with the use of liquid hydrogen as an ionizing particle detector in bubble chambers . The glass window , the vacuum chamber , and the vent system were investigated . In addition , a study was made of the detection and ignition of escaping hydrogen and of the available electrical equipment for use in hydrogen atmospheres . Materials such as tempered glass , aluminum , and stainless steel are not penetrated readily by the small fragments formed when fully tempered glass is shattered and propelled by hydrogen at initial pressures up to 100 psig ; long , slender fragments from untempered glass may penetrate thin walls of relatively soft materials such as rubber gaskets and lead . Hydrogen can be vented satisfactorily from a vacuum chamber with a well - designed vent system . However , the rapid leakage of hydrogen into the surrounding air is a serious problem because the available detectors are satisfactory only when the accumulation of hydrogen is slow . Much of the electrical equipment currently available was designed for use in hydrogen- air atmospheres .

Probabilistic seismic hazard analyses (PSHA) have now gained wide acceptance in the development of design criteria for major projects. When used with regional criteria the procedures have also allowed the preparation of more rational seismic zoning maps. Seismic zoning maps using various levels of results from PSHA studies around the Pacific Rim now include Canada, Indonesia, New Zealand and the United States. Some Pacific Rim countries such as Chile where the seismic exposure is dominated by subduction events have no subdivision into separate zones.Approaches to risk based zoning are being considered in several Pacific Rim countries including Australia. Australian studies must face problems similar to parts of the Eastern United States where seismic activity is low with irregular and infrequent occurrences of moderately large earthquakes. The perception of the seismic exposure by both regulatory agencies and the public at large is different when considering areas of low seismicity. There is therefore a need to make different interpretations of the results of PSHA studies in these areas of low seismicity. The aim of this paper is to explore some of these differences by comparing the results from two site specific studies from areas with widely differing seismic activity rates.

In the past, Westmoreland County together with Fayette County produced about one-third of the bituminous coal mined in Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh bed in Westmoreland County has furnished enormous quantities of coal to the by-product and beehive ovens, gas-manufacturing plants, and general industrial manufacturers over a wide area until about 20 years ago. Little attention was paid to the thinner beds because of the superior quality of the Pittsburgh. The approaching exhaustion of Pittsburgh coal will require accelerated-exploitation of these coals if Westmoreland County is to continue as an important source of bituminous coal, Much of the Pittsburgh coal in Westmoreland County is low-sulfur and requires no mechanical cleaning for the preparation of a metallurgical fuel. Even those areas where the sulfur percentage increased to a maximum of about 2 percent, a relatively easy washing operation usually produced a cleaned coal, which found ready acceptance by the coke industry. Davis reported the remaining recoverable reserves of the .Pittsburgh bed in Westmoreland County to be 255,439,000 tons as of January 1, 1937. Since that date, more than 100,000,000 tons of Pittsburgh coal has been extracted so that the time is not too distant when this important coal bed will be depleted. A study of the Pittsburgh bed in Westmoreland -County has not been made a part of this report as the remaining reserves of the coal can be used in coke making with a, minimum of preparation. The production from the Upper 'Freeport bed will increase as the supply of coal from the Pittsburgh bed diminishes, and as of the present time it supplies a substantial proportion of the county's coal output.

"The depositional model for major Illinois Basin coalbeds is well documented and defined on a regional scale. The model was a driving force during past exploration for lower sulfur and thicker coal deposits. The most attractive coal reserves were known to lie along the flanks of contemporaneous sandstone filled stream channels and were overlain by thick silty gray shale roof. At various distances away from the channels, the depositional model transitioned to black shale I limestone roof, sulfur content of the coal bed increased, and the coal bed often thinned. Understanding the character of roof rock types associated with this depositional model is essential to predicting ground control factors on both a regional scale, and on resolving roof control problems at the mine-site. Additionally, horizontal stress and overburden depth are significant factors that impact roof rock quality and ground control in Illinois Basin mines.Determining the character of several rock types, and defining the primary horizontal stress direction were crucial to a recent successful project at New Future Mine, located in southern Illinois. An inclined slope was constructed from the Illinois No. 5 Coalbed up to the Illinois No. 6 Coalbed through strata that ranged from extremely weak ""stackrock"" and a weak underclay unit, to a massive sandstone unit. Engineering geology, operations management, and Jennmar technical services personnel teamedup to select and install roof support for each strata transition. The project was completed with no injuries and no roof falls.INTRODUCTIONAbundant published information concerning coal deposition, geographic distribution, quantity, quality, and mining conditions exists for Illinois Basin coal reserves. The State of Illinois, through its State Geological Survey (ISGS), has provided decades of research, record keeping, and service to the coal industry. Other excellent sources of Illinois Basin coal information include the Indiana Geologiq1l Survey and the Kentucky Geological Survey. Past research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) supplemented the work by the geological surveys, especially in the area of horizontal stress and mining hazards. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) continues to produce publications focused on roof control issues common to many coal basins, including the Illinois Basin. Many of the illustrations in this paper originated in ISGS and USBM publications."

Introduction Industrial minerals are key ingredients in a large majority of domestic and industrial products that are used in our daily lives. In the 7th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks, fifty three industrial mineral commodities are described. A precise definition of industrial minerals and rocks is difficult. Bates (1975) proposed a definition which is widely used and is as follows: "any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the non-metallics". They can be igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary and range in price from a few dollars per ton to a very high price of hundreds of dollars per ton. The growth in their production and use is closely allied with population growth particularly in countries that maintain a high standard of living. The United States just passed 300 million in population and it is predicted that by 2040 the population will be 400 million. This will result in large increases in the need for Industrial minerals. Other factors that relate to increased use of industrial minerals are increased research and development by the producing companies and better quality control. Many industrial minerals such as kaolin, barite, nepheline syenite, fluorspar, lithium carbonate, phosphate rock, potash, talc, and several others are exported from the producing countries to many users around the world which has significantly increased their use. Also, government agencies, State Geological Surveys, and Universities have contributed to their growth by their research and development activities.

South Australia pioneered metal mining in Australia and was the main source of copper for several decades. Gold discoveries and mining also contributed significantly to the development of the Colony. Across the State can be seen the holes, the mullock heaps and, in some instances, the remnants of machinery of the past era. In this, the centenary year of the discovery of the Teetulpa goldfield, considered by some to he the most significant discovery of gold in the State, it is appropriate that we should present a paper on the history of gold mining in South Australia. South Australia has not been a major producer of gold with recorded production a little in excess of 15 million grams (15 t). This represents about 0.25 per cent of the Australian total and ranks last of the States of the Commonwealth. The outstand- ing feature of gold production in South Australia has been the succession of short periods of rela- tively high production immediately following a discovery, with payable dirt being quickly exhausted, a fact clearly illustrated by the graph of South Australian gold production (Figure 1).

Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of general accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.
