"A simple method is presented whereby the additional quantity and static pressure necessary to compensate for ventilation duct leakage may be estimated using the circular reference functions of modern spreadsheets. Favourable comparisons have been made to the National Coal Board (United Kingdom) design charts and to a case study analysis. IntroductionIn mining, most ducted systems are applied to the development of access tunnels, and most of these systems leak to some extent. When the ventilation duct fails to deliver the required quantity of air to the work place, there is a significant contribution to the development costs, either directly or indirectly.Directly — More air and more pressure are required to compensate for the leakage, more capital development (ventilation shafts, parallel drives) are required because ventilation systems cannot push the fresh air far enough, and longer re-entry times to ensure toxic blast fumes to be diluted.Indirectly — There is a reduction in productivity because of the inclement atmospheric conditions, and/or closure of development ends because of unacceptable atmospheric conditions at the working place. This has been exacerbated over the last few decades because of the increased use of diesel equipment of ever increasing power, and the more stringent Occupational Health and Safety requirements demanding more air flow per kilowatt of diesel power.The leakage from a duct must, therefore, be reliably estimated in order to assess the effectiveness and construction of the system; assess the effectiveness of the maintenance or repair of the duct; appreciate the cost of the leakage, and therefore apply effective maintenance and installation procedures; and engineer safer, healthier and more cost-effective ventilation systems."

Smooth roll crushers are widely used as secondary crushers, operating most effectively when set for size reductions in a ratio between 3 or 4 to I. The feed supplied to these units varies from 13 to 102 mm in size and the product obtained ranges from 13 mm to about 20 mesh. Smooth roll crushers produce very few fines and absolutely no oversize. The diameter otfhe rolls varies with the clearance between them, feed size, and the coefficient of internal friction ofmaterial to be crushed, Detailed calculations of this relationship may be found in Unit operations of Chemical Engineering, (McCabe, W. The Virginia Port Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are partnering to construct the Craney Island Eastward Expansion (CIEE) to meet the dual purpose of extending the life of Craney Island as a dredged material management area and providing land for a state-of-the-art marine terminal. The over 500-acre (200-hectare) expansion provides additional upland dredged material capacity for the Hampton Roads Harbor by constructing perimeter dikes, that once filled, will provide land for the development of a container terminal. In the winter of 2010/2011 the first stage of sand fill was placed, followed by the installation of approximately 12 million linear feet (MLF) (3.6 million linear meters, MLM) of marine PVDs. With over 36 MLF (10.9 MLM) of PVD required to complete dike construction the project will be one of the largest PVD installation project in the U.S. his paper details the challenges associated with the construction of the cross dikes, in particular the design, testing, installation and monitoring of prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) installed overwater to depths of over 130 feet (40 meters) for foundation improvement in the insitu very soft Norfolk Clay. With expected settlements of 20?30 ft (7-10 m) and 30 percent average strains, the discharge capacity of the PVDs was of particular concern. Laboratory data is presented showing the magnitudes and variability of discharge capacity under different confining pressures in both a straight and buckled condition. The method of installation and monitoring of the marine PVDs in open water included developing a specialized barge and sophisticated positioning and data collection system to verify installation location, depth of penetration and track quantities. An observational method, including material testing, detailed surveys, periodic in-situ testing, and instrumentation, was utilized by the project team to assess the project?s progress and allow for validation of consolidation and strength gain rates and magnitudes.

Safety departments have traditionally been held responsible for the safety performance of their division or company. This approach leads to a lack of ownership of safety issues by the larger organization. An alternative paradigm is significantly more effective: the members of the work force (managers as well as workers) are fully responsible and accountable for safe production. The safety department is not extinct, however. Its role has changed, to focus on training, litigation, and external relationships such as community relations. This approach was implemented at BHP Copper's Superior mine and mill in Arizona. By obtaining the genuine commitment of the work force to accident-free production, the mill's MSHA incident rate immediately dropped from 7.4 to zero. The mill also ran one year with no MSHA citations. When this philosophy was implemented at the divisional level, the division's incident rate decreased from 9.5 to 1.1,an 88-percent reduction in six months.

[As a results of work conducted during the past three years, the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Washington at Seattle, Washington, has developed a process for the production of sponge iron. Commercial operation of this process in a 3 to 4-ton scale has been so satisfactory that its use on a large scale (20 to 100 tons per day) can be safely considered. Description of Process. The process consists in passing a mixture of iron ore and coal through a rotating kiln heated at one end to a temperature sufficient to convert iron oxide to metallic iron, discharging, cooling, and separating the sponge iron from the residual coke and silicious material on a magnetic separator. Both the coal and the ore should be crushed to peso as 6-meth scream, tans producing particles finer then 1/12 of an inch. Seventy-five parts of coal or other carbonaceous material arc charged with every 100 parts of ore), This large amount of coal is required in order to supply sufficient carbon to maintain a strongly reducing atmosphere in the charge, but may be reduced to about 65 parts per 100 parts of ore by recovering and using tae carbon that remains in the discharge product. Large-scale operation and refinements in furnace design should lower this ratio to perhaps 56 or 60 parts of coal to 100 parts of ore.]

S02 reduction with CO was studied in an integral flow reactor at a nominal flow of 0.5 liter per minute. Reactant gas contained 3 percent SO2, 6 percent CO, and the balance He. SO2 conversion was determined for three different types of catalysts. The first consisted of 16 commercial catalysts used for various chemical syntheses. Only the commercial catalysts which contained transition metals in alumina removed more than 30 percent 80a at temperatures below 510° C. Two other types of catalysts were prepared in the laboratory either by pelletizing equal amounts of powdered alumina and transition metal oxides or by impregnating commercial alumina tablets with transition metal ions. Regardless of preparation techniques, Cr and Fe in alumina were the two best catalysts. The observed results suggest that an intermediate (SCO) is formed by the interaction of surface metal sulfides and carbonyls. Alumina then catalyzes the interaction of SCO with S02 to form the end products (sulfur and carbon dioxide). Over 80 percent S02 was removed at 460° C with 2 grams alumina impregnated with 2.5 percent iron.

In June 2022, Louisville MSD completed a 6.5 km (4-mile), 6.1 m (20-foot) finisheddiameter CSO conveyance and storage tunnel system located along the Ohio River in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. During construction, the Ohio River Tunnel alignment was expanded 2.4 km (1.5 miles) into areas where natural gas was detected. Without delaying construction, the project team developed and implemented a natural gas risk mitigation strategy to safely excavate the tunnel via TBM and install concrete lining. The risk mitigation strategy included the installation of gas-vent borings, increased tunnel ventilation, retrofitting tunneling equipment for “gassy” operations, and modifying the project specific HASP.

Liberation (the process of destroying the interlock between unwanted materials, such as mineral matter and pyrite, and coal) is one of the most important precursors to the benefication of raw coal in order to produce high grade marketable coals at economical recovery levels. Liberation is achieved usually by comminuting the raw coal. However, because of the significant interaction between the production of fine particles to achieve liberation and the cost of separating fine particles, the coal industry needs a method projecting the change in washability with size reduction. Such a projection can be combined with size reduction and separation simulators in order to examine completely beneficiation circuitry to produce coals of stringent specification. This paper presents the development of an appropriate liberation model for coal and its solution by Monte Carlo simulation to predict the expected washability of the raw coal as a function of comminution. It includes model validation with a known binary mixture as well as with a known teritary mixture.

The entire production of oil in Ecuador so far has come from the Santa Elens Peninsula, Province of Guayas. Both the shallow fields of the northern and the deeper fields of the southern part of the peninsula have been in constant exploitation, though the former are of doubtful economic value. In Table I herewith, which commences with the total amounts produced by the various companies up to 1940, annual company totals are given for the succeeding years. The figures for 1944 have been partly estimated. Table 2 gives figures on casinghead gasoline. Shell Company of Ecuador (formerly known as Anglo-Saxon) has continued active exploration in the Oriente region east of the Andes, and during 1944 the Company's first wildcat well was spudded in. International Ecuadorean Petroleum Co. (formerly International Petroleum Co., Limited) has pursued an active exploration campaign since the latter part of 1939, and a drilling string was placed in operation about a year later. A second string of tools was added during 1943 and a third a few months ago. Ten wildcats, all dry, have been completed in this period, two wells are drilling at the present time and other locations are on the program. Seven of the wells thus far drilled are in the area between Guayaquil and the Santa Elena Peninsula, one up the Daule River beyond Balzar, one on Puna Island in the Guayas Estuary and one in the northern province of Esmeraldas. Both the present drilling wells are in the Guayaquil-Santa Elena zone. The situation in regard to concessions has changed during the past four years because I.E.P.C. has made its selections from the extensive Daule-Guayas Study Concession, as a result of which large tracts were returned to the Government; because of the expropriation of the holdings of the "Ecuapetrol," a German concern whose acreage has passed into other hands; the Peruvian-Ecuadorean boundary settlement, which has reduced Shell's holdings somewhat; and the transfer of most of the holdings of the Cia. A review of past work and results obtained has been published. The present paper deals with a study of line-radio or wired-wireless methods of communication, herein electrical energy is transmitted by metallic conductors.The use of line-radio over metallic conductors has been practiced for a number of years, and at present is being used on a large scale in long-distance carrier-current telephone and telegraph. The early work of the U. S. Army Signal Corps and the Bureau of Standards in using ordinary radio transmitting and receiving apparatus for communication over metallic conductors was been descried. Later publications describe commercial applications, and an excellent treatise and resume is given by E. Colpitts and C. B. Blackwell.Scope of ReportThis report contains (1) a discussion of the chief factors affecting carrier-current transmission, with particular reference in application to underground communication for mines; (2) a description of typical underground circuits used for power and lighting; and (3) description of apparatus used and results obtained in line-radio experiments in coal mines near Pittsburgh, with circuit diagrams, and conclusions as to power requirements and limitations for mine use."

U.S. feldspar output sold or used in 2005 was an estimated 760 kt (838,000 st), valued at $44 million free-on-board plant. This was below the 2004 volume and was the second year of decline in a row. Output included flotation concentrates, feldspar content in feldspar-silica mixtures, potash feldspar and aplite. The strong housing market in the United States maintained demand for ceramic tiles, plumbing fixtures and fiberglass insulation requiring feldspar. Shipments of glass containers were about the same as in 2004. Imports of ceramic tiles and plumbing fixtures continued to increase, taking the place of U.S.-produced goods and the feldspar required to make them. For 2005, 80 percent of the ceramic tiles sold and 50 percent of the plumbing fixtures sold in the United States were imported. Since 2000, manufacturing plant closures in the plumbing fixtures industry have reduced the demand for feldspar and feldspar-silica mixtures by 100 kt (110,000 st). Increased demand from the ceramic tile industry has partially offset the lost volume.

A practical method has been developed and field tested which provides an estimate of the bearing capacity of mine roof and floor. The relationship between penetration of the strata and imposed loads is determined by in situ tests. Information of this type is needed to determine the maximum allowable pressure that may be applied by self-advancing supports on roof and floor of a longwall face without causing a punching type of failure.

Mr Janisch' s comment' in the August issue on Dick Stacey's remarks about safety factors indeed requires wider debate. The example he quoted to illustrate the successful application of the safety factor concept in coal mining, namely the Salamon formula, is to my knowledge the only recognized application of that concept. Not only that, but that particular formula should be used only for what it was intended, namely to prevent major disasters. It was never intended to indicate long-term pillar stability, and it should not be used for that.

"INTRODUCTION The Mount Andrew iron deposit on Kasaan Peninsula, Prince of Wales Island, Southeastern Alaska, was examined in August 1942 by an engineer 4/ of the Bureau of Mines accompanied by geologists 5/ of the Federal Geological Survey. From October 20 to 27, 1942, two engineers 6/ of the Bureau of Mines made a further preliminary examination and took three large samples of magnetite and magnetite-copper ore for metallurgical testing. During the stunner of 1942 an investigation of the Mount Andrew-Stevenson-Mamie area, including topographic and geologic mapping and a magnetic survey, was made by geologist 7/ the Federal Geologically Survey. On May 31 and June 2, 1943, two Bureau of Mines engineers 8/ conducted a preliminary examination in which special attention was directed to trails, camp, and drill sites. They were accompanied on May 31 by L. A. Warner of the Geological Survey.During the period from September 1943 through September 1944 Bureau of Mines engineers 9/ completed a thorough investigation which included trenching, core drilling, and sampling. A Federal Geological Survey representative 10/ examined all trenches and cores for geological data.LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITYThe deposit is situated at latitude 55º 31' N. and longitude 132º 18' W. on the north side of Kasaan Bay on Prince of Wales Island, Southeastern Alaska. The general location is shown on figures 1 and 2. The deposit is 5 miles southwest of the village of Kasaan and by water, 27 miles northwest of Ketchikan; the main tunnel portal is 7/8 mile north of the Mount Andrew landing on Kassan Bay."

The Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) Ventilation Division continues to evaluate proposed explosion-resistant seal designs. There are currently eleven specific designs for explosion-resistant seals that are suitable for construction in underground coal mines. Seal construction in operating mines must be equivalent to those constructed in the Experimental Mine during the explosion testing program. Accidental failures of seals have occurred due to explosion pressures below 138 Kpa (20 psi). The possibility exists that the failed seals were not properly constructed. Also, conditions in the vicinity of the seals may change. Water may accumulate against the seals, heave or sag may cause detrimental effects on the seals, and sloughage of the ribs may negate hitching. If seals are not properly installed or maintained, they could fail when subjected to explosion pressures. If seals fail for any reason, the possibility exists for explosion propagation throughout large areas of the mine. There could be catastrophic consequences to an event of this nature. This report will present a limited discussion on the construction of each of these seals and will address related issues.

Born, March 28, 1853 Died July 23, 1916 On July 25, 1916, the Board of Directors adopted the following minute and directed that it be entered upon the records of the Board & published in the Bulletin of the Institute, and thereof be sent to the family of Mr. Kirchhoff: Charles Kirchhoff was one of the oldest, most widely known and most highly esteerned members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. On his return in 1875 from a European course of study, to begin a highly successful professional career, he joined the Institute, then just commencing to acquire both national and international recognition. He became at once, and-for more than 40 years continued to be, its earnest , and active supporter, serving it as Manager, Councilor or Director for terms aggregating 9 years,-as Vice-President for 2 years, and twice as President for a year. During the critical period of the erection of the United Engineering Society's building, and the transfer of the Institute to permanent head-quarters therein, Mr. Kirchhoff was its efficient representative in the United Engineering Society, and on the Building Committee. In 1910, amid the congratulations of colleagues, employees, and innumerable friends, Mr. Kirchhoff retired from active business as Vice- President and General Manager of a great technical publishing company. Yet he sacrificed of his well-earned leisure yet one more year, to serve the Institute as President through 1911.

This paper describes a CFD modelling study which was carried out to investigate possible improvements in the design of an alumina precipitator tank at the Jajarm plant of Iran Alumina Company. In particular, the tank has an impeller located very close to the tank bottom, such that it quickly becomes covered with settled solids after a shut-down of the agitator, making it difficult to restart. A CFD model was firstly set up in which the existing design was evaluated in terms of flow pattern, off-bottom suspension and distribution of solids, and power consumption. Further simulations were then carried out to test alternative designs, leading to a recommended design, which maintains good mixing, with the same power consumption and without the use of a low-clearance impeller.

Mechanical mining is steadily gaining usage in the mining industry. A variety of machines currently finds employment: tunnel boring machines, roadheaders, continuous miners, surface miners, and augers. These machines have advantages compared to drill and blast mining methods, including increased safety, lower cost, uniform muck size, and accurately sized openings. A century of experience with mechanical methods has already paid dividends to the coal industry. Current trends guarantee eventual development of true general-purpose hardrock mechanical mining machines. Mechanical miners will become integrated mining systems and will determine the design of mines, when several significant challenges have been met.
