Calcium ferrite slags are often associated with Professor Yazawa due to his pioneering work on the thermodynamics of this type of melts. Over the past years CSIRO has invested some effort in studying physico-chemical properties of such melts to fill in some gaps in our knowledge and explore opportunities for application of the understanding developed. These investigations cover thermodynamics, transport properties of calcium ferrite based slags, as well as the kinetics of reactions of such slags with refractories. The present paper provides an overview of some of these studies and highlights some of the interesting behavior of such melts, The oxidation state of copper and arsenic in calcium ferrite based slags are predominantly Cu+ and As3+, respectively, at oxygen potentials below 10-7 atm. The concentration of CU2+ in such slags becomes significant at oxygen potentials of greater than 10-7 atm at 1300 °C. The activities of CuO0.5 and AsO1.5 in calcium ferrite slags show strong deviations from the Raoultian Law, while that of CoO is very close to ideal behaviour with respect to pure solid CoO. Addition of SiO2 to calcium ferrite slags can have significant effects on the activities of FeO and Fe2O3 and hence the stability of magnetite phase. Transfer of oxygen in calcium ferrite slags is fast with diffusivity of 2x 103 cm2/s at 1350 °C and activation energy of 16 kcal/mol. Presence of solid phases, such as magnetite, has pronounced effect on the viscosity of calcium ferrite slags. The observed dependence on solid loading and shear rate indicates deviation from Newtonian behaviour. The interfacial tension between copper mattes and calcium ferrite slags is strongly dependent on the matte grade, with the determined values being much lower than the corresponding ones for interfacial tension between similar mattes and iron silicate slags. MgO, Cr2O3 and MgCr2O4 have low solubility in calcium ferrite slags and their solubility increases with increasing copper oxide content of the slag at 1300°C. The oxidation state of the slag has strong effects on phase transformation, dissolution rate and disintegration of refractories in calcium ferrite slags. In 1927 Coghill showed that there is considerable liberation of the iron oxide mineral from gangue when the Alabama red iron ores are ground to a size suitable for classification and tabling but that there is not sufficient to make possible a high extraction and a high grade of concentrate. Coghill states: High extraction and 'high grade of concentrate cannot be obtained without grinding to a size comparable with flotation or cyanide practice. If grade of concentrate be sacrificed the grinding need not be so severe. These ores slime readily during grinding, and in most instances the slimes are only slightly higher grade than the original ore. Not only do they carry a considerable percentage of the total iron in the ore, so that to reject them as tailings would result in prohibitively low extraction, but they are too fine to be amenable to ordinary methods of gravity concentration. In 1929 the Bureau of Mines published results showing that certain Alabama oolitic iron ores could be concentrated by classification and tabling after grinding, with rubber-covered rods. This selective grinding produced slimes of much higher grade than the original ore, and they were considered part of the final concentrate.

The No. 10 metro line of Shanghai city is 36 kilometers in length and will pass through the operating airport runway by using tunnel boring machine with earth pres-sure balance mode. Although there are examples through world that tunnels pass through airport runway and tunnelling underground is not a difficult undertaking technically, there is rare experience in China for the similar projects especially in Shanghai saturated soft soil region. Shanghai soft earth is famous for its high compressibility, high rate of water content, weakness in strength, large deformation and different characteristics in earth strata. Besides, the whole construction process will be under ultra-large airplane dynamic load on the surface ground over the tunnel, which increases the risks of construction process. This paper evaluates the feasibility of building the metro tunnel under such an extremely serious condition, especially the subsidence of ground surface caused by advancing of tunnel boring machine, which also is the most important control target for the safe operating of the runway. Furthermore, this paper discusses the effective measures to keep the settlements in the permissible level during the whole working period for the tunnel from aspects of plan, design and construction.

The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH OMSHR) conducted laboratory testing of a self-tramming, remotely controlled mobile Dry Scrubber (DS) that J.H. Fletcher and Co. developed under a contract with NIOSH OMSHR to reduce the exposure of miners to airborne dust. The scrubber was found to average greater than 95 percent dust removal efficiency with disposable filters, and 88 and 90 percent, respectively, with optional washable filters in their prewash and post-wash test conditions. Although the washable filters can be reused, washing them generated personal and downstream respirable dust concentrations of 1.2 and 8.3 mg/m3, respectively, for a 10-min washing period. The scrubber’s velocity-pressure-regulated variablefrequency- drive fan maintained relatively consistent airflow near the targeted 1.42 and 4.25 m3/s (3,000 and 9,000 ft3/min) airflow rates during most of the laboratory dust testing until reaching its maximum 60-Hz fan motor frequency or horsepower rating at 2,610 Pa (10.5 in. w.g.) of filter differential pressure and 3.97 m3/s (8,420 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow quantity. Laboratory sound level measurements of the scrubber showed that the outlet side of the scrubber was noisier, and the loaded filters increased sound levels compared with clean filters at the same airflow quantities. With loaded filters, the scrubber reached a 90 dB(A) sound level at 2.83 m3/s (6,000 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow, indicating that miners should not be overexposed in relation to MSHA’s permissible exposure level — under Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 62.101— of 90 dB(A) at or below this airflow quantity. The scrubber’s washable filters were not used during field-testing because of their lower respirable dust removal efficiency and the airborne dust generated by filter washing. Field-testing the scrubber with disposable filters at two underground coal mine sections showed that it could clean a portion of the section return air and provide dust reduction of about 50 percent at the face area downstream of the continuous-miner operation.

Owing to improvements in computer capacity, it is now possible to undertake fully coupled or partially coupled, three-dimensional (3D) hydromechanical Finite Element (FE) simulation of mines, including explicit representations of large numbers of discontinuities. The analysis requires fewer assumptions than uncoupled analysis or two-dimensional (2D) analysis, but may require a change in how hydrological data is collected. The way hydrological data is incorporated in stability assessment and the approach to uncertainty in hydrological information also requires discussion. The current procedures for this type of analysis are discussed, along with some practical difficulties and teachings from early applications. A work flow for integration of 3D hydromechanical modelling with pit planning and some considerations for the management of uncertain data are also proposed.

The prime objective of geometallurgy is to improve the profitability of mines through the use of spatial models of rock properties that have a significant impact on value. Although a key property is the grade of the component of interest, because it directly influences the revenue from saleable material, increasingly attention is being focused on other attributes. These 'non-grade' variables may have a less direct, but equally profound impact on value, either by reducing potential revenue (eg lowering recovery, deleterious elements, etc) or increasing mining or treatment costs (eg comminution, grindability, throughput, reagent use, etc). Collectively, these variables have been described as 'geometallurgical'. There are three main areas of activity required to realise the value of geometallurgy: 1. acquisition of appropriate data through sampling and measurement, 2. building spatial models of geometallurgical variables, and 3. using these models to optimise value. Each of these is built on the foundation of the preceding step. In building reliable spatial models, it is critical that the amount of error introduced to data by the sampling and measurement processes is understood and quantified, in order that the inherent variability of the component of interest can also be properly understood. Management of the quality of grade variables is now applied (with different levels of diligence and success) across nearly all sectors of the mining industry, not least because of the necessity to adhere to Codes of practice (eg JORC, 2004). The necessity for quality management and at least the broad framework of what to do in practice is reasonably understood by many relevant professionals. There are also a number of tools, including software products, statistical analyses and presentation formats, available for those managing grade data. It is also abundantly clear, that in many cases people have little understanding of why they are doing particular quality control activities, or how to sensibly interpret the results. The same is not true for many geometallurgical variables. In almost all instances the authors have seen, the magnitude of sampling and analytical/measurement error variance embedded in geometallurgical test data is untested and unknown. This is partly because until relatively recently, metallurgical data has mainly been collected for the purpose of process and mill design, with few, expensive tests carried out on 'average' samples of the orebody. Increasingly however, there is a move towards collection of much larger data sets from spatially distributed sampling, and thus a growing necessity to understand the errors inherent in both sampling and analysis of these types of variables, and how to manage them. In order to understand how the quality management practices applied to grade variables can be extended to geometallurgical variables, it is essential to understand the theoretical foundation that supports these practices. This requires an analysis of the concepts that underpin the 'principles of additivity' (Matheron, 1963), the 'theory of sampling' (Gy, 1982, Pitard, 1993), and 'statistical process control' (Shewhart, 1930). Relevant concepts are then integrated to form a foundation to develop methods to improve the quality management of geometallurgical variables. Application of this framework will significantly increase the integrity of geometallurgical data, the reliability of geometallurgical models and ultimately the value derived from implementing geometallurgy. Under a cooperative agreement, the Bureau of Mines, Magma Copper Co., and ASARCO, Inc., tested backfilled ground support systems at t.wo elevations in Magma's San Manuel, AZ, mine. The tests were mainly for guidance in designing the loading crosscuts of the new ASARCO Sacaton underground mine. Two-piece, wide-flange steel sets for 8-by 8-ft (2.44-by 2.44-m) and 11-by II-ft (3.36-by 3.36-m) openings were designed. Set spacing was 3 ft (0.91 m) and 5 ft (1.52 m), respectively. After erection, the sets were lagged with various test materials. The void between the lining and the ground was backfilled with sand and pea gravel. Instruments measuring strain (used to determine changes in stress) were placed beneath the sets and in the backfill. Results indicate the backfilled sets in the smaller drift (2315 grizzly level, panels 6 and 7) of 8-by 8-ft (2.44-by 2.44-m) cross section are a viable permanent support system, lower in cost than the standard formed concrete. Results are inconclusive in 2615 grizzly level, panels 5 and 6, where wide-flange steel sets were used with 5-ft (1.52-m) long concrete gob lagging of T-design.

The machine is designed to traverse a 32 inch entry and rebolt a roof fall area to a height of 28 feet 10 inches. Covered in the report is a chronology of the project, an explanation of the design problems, and a description of their solutions. The report concludes that the equipment as designed is suitable for the purpose intended and further testing is recommended.

"The need for spodumene as a source of lithia for war purposes led to the exploitation of the Edison pegmatite deposit 1-1/2 miles southeast of Keystone, S. Dak. The operation was conducted during 1943 and 1944 by the Lor Mining Co., Rapid City, S. Dak. Spodumene concentrates in the ratio of 15:1 were recovered by hand picking from a sorting belt. This method was expensive and wasteful of spodumene, owing to the small size of the crystals.Data4/ obtained by the Bureau of Mines indicates that blunging with hydroflouric acid or sodium hydroxide is a prerequisite to selective flotation. Results of tests by Denver Equipment Co., Denver, Colo., indicate that economic recoveries can be obtained in an alkaline circuit after desliming.At the request of the Lor Mining Co., K. L. Erickson, metallurgical engineer, was permitted to work in the pegmatite research laboratory to verify previous investigations and to determine problems that might be involved in commercial milling. The ensuing investigation indicated that electrolytes in the mill water produced a profound inhibiting action on the flotation of Edison spodumone.An investigation of mill water from various sources showed that some waters are suitable for the process and others are not. Subsequent testing showed that all of the available waters are suitable after treatment. The flotation of the Edison spodumene in an alkaline circuit after desliming and using oleic acid as collector is efficient and economical when the water does not contain impurities.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B.Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches arc under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.As the work was of a practical nature, samples from possible mill-water sources in the southern Black Hills were obtained, and commercial softening and demineralizing methods were investigated. Data on various waters tested are given in table 1."

When location guidelines are followed in choosing sites for fixed point velocity transducers for use in underground coal mine monitoring, mine air turbulence intensities <11% are generally expected at those sites. The objective of this Bureau of Mines investigation to determine the effect of turbulence intensities <11% on vortex shedding sensors and transducers. Measurements were made at velocity levels of interest for underground coal mine monitoring use (?200, ?500, ?1,000, ?1,500 ft/min). The effect of grid-produced turbulence intensities (2% to ?14%) on the output of vortex-shedding air-velocity transducers was less than ±10%.

The purpose of this paper is to provide the rationale for decision making when considering the use of three heading gate roads in Australian underground coal mines.There are currently 30 underground longwall mines in Australia with all but two employing two heading gate road longwall layouts. The volumetric capacity of these two heading ventilation circuits is evidently viable in typical block lengths and in low to moderate gas regimes. However, in gassier regimes, potential longwall production rates of 10 Mt/a, and or where block lengths are being extended to well beyond historical norms, a conventional two heading U circuit may not be adequate. Other than seam gas emission, block length and production dependent heat loads together sealed area management requirements also have to be considered.The two mines currently employing three heading gate roads have the opportunity to revert to two headings at any time but, based on operational experience to date, have not done so due to the consequential reduction in gas management capacity and lower production rates associated with gas delays and limitations on tailgate access.Although there are a number of alternative two heading longwall circuits available and employed worldwide, the custom and practice of promoting inert goaf atmospheres in most Australian coal mines to mitigate the risk of catastrophic gas explosions and spontaneous combustion often prevents the use of gas loaded bleeder systems. In this respect, Australian underground coal mines may be considered the safest in the world.The current situation is that three heading gate roads have been proven successful in Australian conditions, albeit at additional cost, where two heading ventilation circuits cannot manage net seam gas emission to the ventilation system at the production rates required. In the quest to access valuable critical minerals, humankind is expanding the frontier into extreme environments like space and deep-sea mining. These ambitious enterprises involve considerable costs and lengthy development cycles to ensure the robustness of mining systems in the face of the harshest conditions and unforeseen challenges. Unfortunately, obtaining information from these unexplored territories is complicated. Data is often scarce, incomplete or impossible to obtain until equipment is deployed, leaving engineers facing many uncertainties throughout the design, testing, production and preparation of such missions. Despite these challenges, these extreme environments operate under consistent physical and chemical principles that can be faithfully digitally replicated. However, unexplored areas and dynamic systems like weather and geology continue to carry uncertainties. While eliminating uncertainties remains elusive, Digital Twins offers a means of robust risk management tool. These virtual replicas can excel in simulating extreme conditions and unexpected events, helping optimise and validate mining system designs tailored for such hostile environments. This study takes inspiration from the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity Rover’s wheel damage rate to develop a Multiphysics Modelling and Virtual Motion Simulation (MMVMS) system. Using advanced Generative Design, this MMVMS system refines the MSL’s design, simulates component and system performance, and assesses the risk of premature damage while operating on Mars. Additionally, MMVMS integrates cutting-edge CAD design technologies from aerospace and manufacturing to realistically recreate the Martian environment and a detailed representation of MSL, allowing mobility verification and validation simulation to test different components in terms of materials, design, weight, power and, therefore, cost. The research highlights the precision of MMVMS in replicating extreme conditions, simulating and evaluating internal and external variables influencing the entire system (Rover) in real-time, and predicting movements, failures, and premature damage. This sophisticated Digital Twin technology, showcased in this research, holds promise not only for space missions but also to be adapted for terrestrial and deep-sea mining operations.

Australian continental crust has accreted and consolidated by thirds: 1/3 during Archean time, 1/3 during Early to mid- Proterozoic time, and 1/3 during latest Precambrian to mostly Paleozoic time. The progression of orogenic systems and the crustal consolidations they represent seem not fundamentally different in basic orogenic processes from better known Mesozoic-Cenozoic examples in that accretionary, continental margin, collisional, and intraplate intracratonic inverted and/or reactivated systems are all recognizable in the tectonic evolution of Australia.

In Germany the extraction of lithium and its salts has been handled mainly by units of the two major concerns - Metallgesellschaft A, G. and Deutsche Gold und Silber Scheide Anstalt, both with headquarters in Frankfurt. Zinnwaldite, which belongs to the mica group, is the major source of the lithium-containing raw material in Germany. Lepidolite and amblygonite also are used when available, but they are imported, as there are no major deposits of these two minerals in Germany.

AWAKENED public interest in efforts to conserve natural resources will certainly be appreciated by the members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and a discussion upon conservation may well form a part of one of the Institute meetings, for the records of papers and discussions which appear in the 38 volumes of its Transactions are replete with evidence of effort&apos;s in this direction. Every process which reduces the fuel consumed or the power applied per unit of product; every utilization of waste material, or employment of that formerly rejected, to obtain something of value ; every feature of construction or operation which lessens the labor required or increases the output per employee, is an advance in the direction of true conservation. This may not appear from the records of late conferences or from published articles, in which the effort seems to be concentrated upon reducing the consumption and presenting to the people of the country estimates of exhaustion of natural resources. I rejoice in the awakening of public interest in a matter so important for the present and future welfare of our nation; I appreciate the possibility of much good following conferences of the Governors and delegates from various States and from national societies; and I recognize the interdependence, not only of different States, but of contiguous nations. In fact, the marvelous development of transportation by land and by water, and the decreasing rates at which commodities can be moved great distances, have in many cases practically obliterated geographical boundaries, and nearly every country on the globe can either market its product in other lands or draw upon them for raw or manufactured materials ; hence, conservation is an international subject.

"Workers at mineral processing facilities are often exposed to high levels of dust generated when ores are processed. Crushing, grinding, screening, and other processes generate large quantities of dust, which can exceed the threshold VALUES (prescribed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Many ores contain quartz (silica), which has been known to cause serious health problems in workers over time. Given the structure of mineral processing plants, the airflow regime is not coherent inside the building, which may lead to multiple recirculation zones. These recirculation zones can trap dust, and concentrations of dust can then rise over time. Therefore, there is a need to understand the airflow phenomenon that occur inside of mineral processing facilities and how these occurrences interact with the dust generation processes to identify zones of potentially high dust concentration. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling can give a better understanding of the airflow and help recommend designs and methods to mitigate the high dust concentrations in a mineral processing plant. This paper presents the CFD modeling of airflow inside of a mill building to demonstrate airflow patterns that will affect the generation and subsequent dispersion of dust due to crushing, grinding, and other activities. This study was conducted by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). INTRODUCTION In a mineral processing facility, minerals go through various mechanical processes in order to reduce their size for separation of economic minerals from gangue minerals to produce a final marketable product. This research, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), focuses on ore mills in metal and nonmetal mining (MNM) operations, but the applicability of the approach will be valid for any large structure where workers are exposed to airborne contaminants. The processes of crushing, grinding, cleaning, drying, and product sizing in these facilities generate a large amount of dust, creating hazardous conditions for the workers in these facilities. This is highlighted by the fact that MSHA sampling data for the years 1997–2012 indicate that 12.3% and 15.9% of the gathered samples were over 100 µg/m3 for silica for metal and nonmetal mills, respectively [1]. Mineral processing operations typically use some type of engineering control to address their most significant dust sources. Engineering controls include such approaches as bag-house-type dust collectors, scrubbers, and electrostatic precipitation [2]."
