The recovery of Sn from used Pb-free solder (Sn, 3~4 % Ag, < 0.9 % Cu, < 1.2 % Pb) has been investigated by electrorefining in sulfuric acid solutions containing small amount of hydrochloric acid. This involved preparation of the anode material by melting and casting the used solder followed by refining. During electrorefining, dendritic tin was deposited on stainless steel cathode. Increasing the amount of hydrochloric acid up to 0.3 mol /L in the electrolyte enhanced the current efficiency to 92.2 % and the enrichment ratio of silver to 94.3 % in the anode slime which was otherwise 84.7% and 81.6 % in absence of HCl, respectively. The electrolyte containing hydrochloric acid has also prevented the precipitation of tin oxide in the bath. In the scale-up experiment using 1.6 kg anodes, 84.3 % current efficiency and close to 100 % Ag enrichment ratio were obtained, while the purity of electro-refined tin was over 99.9 %. The energy consumption of the winning process was found to be 0.151 kWh /kg-Sn which is competitive as compared to commercial tin electrorefining processes.

I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon&apos;s pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon&apos;s pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (15%) of Professor Gershon&apos;s pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

This paper will review world trends that are increasingly restrictive of mineral exploration and mining throughout the Free World This is occurring in the face of projected huge increases in demand for mineral products Some of the impediments are direct and absolute; others are indirect, but nevertheless effective; still others represent merely hostile attitudes Many of the world governments have a reputation for lack of integrity in dealing with existing foreign investments within their borders, and consequently are quite uninviting places for new investments, especially in the capital intensive natural resources industry. Compared with even 35 odd years ago (and pre-World War II is not that long ago) there are few places left where private mining investments are both wanted and where investors are willing, to go. We shall begin with an analysis of conditions in the U. S., shift to neighboring Canada and Flexico, and then have a look around the world. As the world grows smaller for the private mining sector, the function of exploration, development, and operation is passing over to government. We&apos;ll conclude with a view of what this holds for the future

Introduction The growing role of Colombia as a major supplier of internationally traded steam coal has been widely discussed in the industry. Although Colombian coal has been produced and exported in small quantities for a number of years, the country&apos;s position as a major coal exporter began in earnest in 1985 with the first commercial exports from the Cerrejon North Block Project. The mine is located on the Guajira peninsula in northeast Colombia, about 145 km (90 miles) from the coast (Fig. 1). In addition to the mine itself, the project involves construction of a dedicated railroad and port. This forms a modern, efficient, and integrated system. The project is embodied in a 50-50 association contract between International Colombia Resources (Intercor), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Exxon, and Carbocol, the Colombian state coal company. Intercor and Carbocol share investment and operating expenses equally. Intercor has the additional responsibility of managing operations on behalf of the partners. Each partner is entitled to 50% of the coal produced, and each markets its share separately. The project is a multi-seam, truck and shovel operation, based on large reserves (2 to 3 Gt or 2.2 to 3.3 billion st) of high quality bituminous coal. Exports began in the first quarter of 1985, at modest levels through what is called Early Coal Facilities. The permanent coal handling system began operation in February 1986. Production will increase rapidly in each of the next few years, reaching the design capacity of 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) in 1989. Based on available resources, however, the resource will support expansion, and continued growth in production into the 1990s is feasible. Importance of transportation The success of a new coal export venture, such as Cerrejon, depends heavily on efficient transportation. In the international coal industry, overland and ocean transport can in some cases account for 40% to 50% of the final value of the product. Many coals, such as western US subbituminous coals, cannot reach export markets at all because of their low heat content and great distance from export markets. By the same token, low-grade resources are often commercially attractive for local markets even in the face of competition with much higher quality coals from distant sources. In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied an 11,980-acre part of the 33,300-acre High Rock Canyon Wilderness Study Area, CA-020-913B, in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. No mineral resources were identified during this study, and no significant amounts of gold, silver, mercury, gem-grade opal, or placer gold are present. The study area is located in Washoe County, NV, about 53 miles southeast of Cedarville, CA. No mining districts or mineral production are known, and no oil and gas leases are in the area. No current claims are in the area; however, six placer claims were located in 1911 in High Rock Canyon near its confluence with Mahogany Creek.

High speed diamond cutting has extensive applications in civil and mining engineering. A project involving the diamond sawing of black granite is investigating the nature of the diamond cutting process. A sawing machine was devised to adjust the cutting load and measure cutting speed. Cuttings were collected for size distribution analysis. The surface produced by interaction between diamond. grits and the rock was subjected to microscopic investigation. Increasing load prompts the proportional increase in the cutting rate. But the mean size of cuttings shows little change. The photomicrographs of the cutting tracks indicate neither patterns of crack formation nor signs of the ductile behaviour of the rock. A diamond cutting model for hard rock is formulated on these observations. Diamond cutting is a process of surface failure, which advances in four stages. The polycrystalline characteristics of a hard rock and the action of high-speed diamond grits guarantee the creation of crack nuclei which develop into cracks in various directions. This network crisscrossing cracks enable the stripping of this surface layer from the rock.

The combined 80th Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 68th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 17 and 18, 2007, in Duluth, MN. About 350 mining industry professionals attended the conference, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from the United States, Canada, Australia, Finland and Brazil. This year’s theme was “Consolidation – Growth – Technology.” The 80th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions, a keynote session that featured two distinguished speakers and a general managers session in which taconite mine operators provided updates on their operations. The Minnesota Section meeting also offered an SME short course titled “Control the Feed, Control the Mill.” More than 50 individuals at-tended the short course.

Preliminary to an experimental study of selected physical properties of helium and related gases) the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center conducted a data-gathering literature survey. This report combines the results of the 1961-63 literature search into a usable format. The data accumulated on the physical properties are presented in tables and graphs. The data in the tables were chosen for exact representation and comparison of specific values. An attempt was made to select the most reliable and consistent value available for a given property without extensively analyzing each source reference. The methods of evaluation are discussed later. The graphs show trends and anomalies which may be obscure in tabular form. Due to the international depletion of reserves of traditional high-grade iron ore, the ore resources available throughout the world, especially in steel mills in East Asia, have changed drastically from hard hematitic to more goethitic ore types, such as pisolitic and Marra Mamba ores. The level of impurities and loss on ignition in iron ore has also been slowly increasing. Finally, the proportion of fine material in the available products has increased considerably for most iron ore fines. This has been found to have significant impacts on sinter quality and sintering performance. Magnetite concentrate is typically high in Fe grade and releases extra heat when oxidised to hematite. The amount of magnetite concentrates is expected to increase due to the recent development of a number of magnetite projects. Some of these magnetite concentrates will end in sinter blends. This will not only improve the sinter quality and but also have a beneficial impact on the fuel consumption of the sintering process. However, most of the concentrates available are very fine, which will negatively impact the green bed permeability and consequently the productivity of the sintering process. Operational data of BOF and the slag samples for different starting conditions of phosphorus(0.06–0.26 per cent P) and silicon content (0.3–1.2 per cent Si) of hot metal have been analysed. The contribution of parameters that are well known to affect phosphorus distribution at tap, like basicity, temperature, FeO content of slag, slag mass etc., is investigated through the models of ionic theory of slag, optical basicity, regular solution approach and molecular theory of slag. The best overall results are obtained by the model based on molecular theory of slag in which several operational parameters are also incorporated. The investigations of different slag samples, based on optical, SEM, EPMA and X-ray studies, reveal the effect of MgO and Al2O3on slag morphology and phosphorus distribution in different phases. It is important to consider phosphorus distribution ratio in the solid and liquid part of slag. The solid part of slag, which is mostly dicalciumsilicate, can contain up to 5 per cent phosphorus. The phosphorus content of the liquid part of slag may depend upon the phosphorus content of hot metal or phosphorus load of slag. It is found that incorporation of effect of dicalciumsilicate in the model improves the accuracy of prediction. For better process control, the addition of iron ore towards the end of blow must be avoided while treating high phosphorus hot metal or during the production of ultra low phosphorus steels. "There is an old saying that ""It is too late to lock the stable after the horse is stolen"". Is not this just what is being done by many mine operators today when it comes to buying safe electrical equipment for gaseous and dusty coal mines?The ""open type"" of electrical equipment or even the ""half safe"" type represents the unlocked stable. After the mine disaster, and after men have lost their lives, the lock is put on - that is, safer equipment is installed.For example, an open type of electric coal drill was used in a gaseous mine in West Virginia, This was the probable cause of the death of 27 men. A half safe type of electric coal-cutting machine was used in a gaseous mine in Pennsylvania. This was likely the cause of the death of 36 men. An unapproved, unsafe type of flame safety lamp was used in a gaseous and dusty mine in Utah. This was the all¬eged cause of the death of 171 men. All three disasters happened within the last six months, and seem to have been avoidable if proper equipment had been used.It is understood that more rigid requirements will be enforced in West Virginia. The committee of State mine inspectors made definite recommendation for im¬proving the conditions in the given mine in Pennsylvania. The Industrial Commission of Utah have already issued new orders which will remedy the use of unsafe lamps in that State.These acts and recommendation are all good and will help prevent accidents in those States in the future. Is it not a pity that such recommendations and order were not made a little earlier before the tell of life had been exacted? Is it not a pity that other States will not take these lessons to heart and safeguard their mines before and not after disasters take place?Electric current can cause accidents in five general ways as follows: (1) By shock to persons; (2) by igniting powder; (3) by igniting gas; (4) by igniting coal dust; and (5) by setting fire to inflammable material such as timber and coal. A great many accidents from these causes are preventable if proper care is taken. Most of the accidents caused by sparks and flashes from electrical apparatus would not take place if approved electrical equipment was used. By approved equipment, the writer means equipment that has been tested and formally approved by the Bureau of Mines. So far as known, up to the present time, no disasters have been caused by sparks or flashes from equipment having the Bureau's approval."

The Banner mining district is about 70 miles northeast of Tucson in the southern part of Gila County, Arizona. Production from the district, valued at about $26 million, is chiefly from copper-silver-lead zinc ores. The stratigraphic section consists of Precambrian conglomerates, quartzites, dolomites, and limestones, Cambrian quartzites; Devonian limestones; dolomites, and shales; Mississippian limestones; Pennsylvanian limestones and shales; and Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Deformation of these rocks presumably started near the end of the Cretaceous, and extended into the late Tertiary. The sedimentary rocks were folded, faulted, and intruded by fine grained diorite, quartz mica diorite, and dacite porphyry. At least four distinct stages of mineralization are recognized. In the first stage of contact metamorphism and the second stage of hydrothermal alteration, favorable zones were prepared for ore deposition. Metallization occurred in three of the mineralizing stages. Magnetite, pyrite, and hematite were deposited near the end of the second stage of hydrothermal alteration. The third stage included the main deposition of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and galena. In the fourth and final stage, minor amounts of sulfide minerals were deposited with a late anhydrite and quartz gangue. The ore deposits in the form of veins and veinlets, pipes, irregular massive replacements, and bedded replacements are localized by the extent and distribution of metamorphic and hydrothermal alteration, by the proximity to the intrusive contacts, and by the effects of structural development. Oxidized ores of copper, lead, and zinc constituted the principal production of the district prior to 1940, but, for the most part, supergene enrichment was of minor economic importance. The ore bodies of the district are in the mesothermal class of deposits, occurring as normal metasomatic replacement and vein types.

"The McCook Main Tunnel system consists of a 10-m (33-ft) finished diameter, 490-m (1,600-ft) long, hard rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5-m (90- ft) diameter and 92-m (300-ft) deep main gate and tunnel construction access shaft. The gate shaft houses six, high-head 4.4 m by 9 m (14.5 ft by 29.5 ft) wheel gates to be installed in the bifurcated and steellined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir.The construction of the tunnel system has been divided into two contracts. The gate and construction access shaft was completed in August 2011. The tunnel excavation and concrete and steel lining was completed in September 2014. The remaining and undergoing construction include the tunnel connections to the reservoir and the Mainstream Tunnel and installation of gates and hydraulic cylinders. This article focuses on the live connection of the McCook Main Tunnel to the Mainstream Tunnel that was initiated in November 2014 and will continue through the seasonal drier weather conditions in Chicago approximately from October through April. Chicago TARP systemThe MWRD has been addressing combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flooding in Chicagoland since the late 1960s and formally adopted the tunnel and reservoir plan in 1972 to protect the region’s most precious drinking water supply, Lake Michigan. Phase I of TARP, which included construction of 175 km (109 miles) of deep storage and conveyance tunnels with diameters up to 10 m (33 ft), was completed in 2006. In addition to protection of Lake Michigan from CSO discharges, Phase I resulted in substantial improvements in surface water quality as well as the quality of life for lake and riverfront communities in Chicago. Water quality improvements and flooding mitigation will be further enhanced as Phase II reservoirs are placed in service, including the three large reservoir systems, McCook, Thornton and Majewski (Fig. 1).The McCook Reservoir is the largest reservoir in the TARP system. Once completed, this $700-million reservoir facility will receive 38 billion L (10 billion gal) of CSO and flood water via the McCook Main Tunnel, which connects the TARP Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir, and from distribution and Des Plaines inflow tunnels which will bring flow from the Des Plaines Tunnel of TARP."

This paper discusses the philosophies, strategies, goals and pitfalls in automating a mine schedule. The intention of the paper is to give an open and honest view of who could benefit from moving to an automated system, what you can expect from such a system, and what you should be aware of. Many companies feel that moving to an automated mine planning solution will allow the mine scheduling engineer to push a button and walk away, but the reality is that is hardly ever the case. Part of that awareness comes from understanding what is meant by ?automated mine scheduling?, and this paper address that. By contrasting what is meant by ?manual scheduling? and ?automated scheduling? it is hoped that the reader can gain an appreciation of the entire process.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the National Send and Gravel Association conducted a safety contest in 1929 Among producers of sand and gravel. Only 26 plants were enrolled, as the contest was late getting under way. It is hoped that a ranch larger number of plants will be represented in the safety competition of 1930. Two trophies, both of which were provided by Rock Products magazine, were awarded at the end of the contest; one trophy was given for the best safety record among plants working 100,000 or mare man-hours during the year and the other for the beat record among plants working less than 100,000 man-hours. The trophies were presented to representatives of the winning, companies on January 29, 1930, at the annual convention of the National Sand and Gravel Association at Memphis, Tenn.

Incorrect sampling and measurement operations and misunderstanding the components of variability can cause huge economic losses to the mining industry. The main objective of this paper is to illustrate by means of four historical facts how Codelco has been evolving in those issues since the late 1980s. The El Abra bias, the awareness of the different kind of sampling errors and the role of Francis Pitard, the awareness of weighting errors, and the understanding of the components of nature and process variability are described. It has been a slow but a consistent process. Much progress has been achieved but still there are many opportunities for improvement to transit from the tonnage culture to the productivity culture.

Durante varios años se ha utilizado los extractos de quebracho como depresores y dispersantes en los procesos mineros. Empero, existe una nueva forma familia de extractos de quebracho modificados que pueden ser aplicados en los procesos de flotación. Estos reactivos orgánicos naturales, extraídos del quebracho, se aplican en bajos consumos y por tratarse de productos de origen natural, se presentan como una alternativa limpia en relación a los reactivos tradicionales. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo señala la utilización de diferentes extractos de quebracho modificados, dispersantes y depresores, en los ensayos de flotación de sulfuros y también en minerales no metalíferos, donde su aplicación no solo permite mejorar la selectividad, sino mejorar la recuperación de los minerales valiosos.

The Mercer Clay bed in central Pennsylvania has produced feedstocks for the refractory industry in the USA and has also been investigated as a source of alumina and lithium. Developments in global markets for these commodities, as well as rare earth elements, have led to their classification as critical minerals in the USA, in turn renewing production opportunities for the Mercer Clay resource. The work reported here includes a review of the clay types and minerals involved, as well as past mineral processing and extractive metallurgy test work, and reports new research results from renewed investigation of the deposit as a polymetallic resource. This renewed work has found lithium contents that exceed 1,000 ppm, lying directly below the overlying Mercer coal, where the alumina content ranged from 32 to 34 wt%. Total rare earth concentrations were somewhat lower than have been found elsewhere in the region, and the highest contents were also found to be stratigraphically close to the coal. Further work is required to establish the mineral hosts for lithium and rare earths and to define the extent of enriched alumina, lithium, and rare earth concentrations.

MY first Nevada City mining reminiscence is one of seeing Capt. Thomas Mein, over 52 years ago, in the old Wyoming mill on Deer Creek about a mile below the town of Nevada City. Captain Mein was then superintendent of the Wyoming mine, where the old fashioned Cornish pump was used, as well as hurdy-gurdy water wheels for power. This mill was one of the typical, up-to-date mills of that time and consisted of stamps, fed by Chinese hand feeders, who also cobbed the ore down to a small enough size to be fed into the mortars. Stamps at that time were of light weight and crushed about one ton to one and a half tons to the stamp, the pulp going over plates, then into sluices with self-raising gates. When a sluice became full the pulp was shut off and directed into the parallel sluice, also with a self-raising gate. The concentrate thus collected in the sluice was shoveled out and carried to Cornish buddles and there cleaned up, preparatory to being sent to a local custom chlorination works.

The use of nuclear fission for chemical process heat offers the special advantage of high temperature, limited only by materials of construction. The process heat may be supplied economically at elevated pressures, since no compression of combustion air is required. For the initial effort in developing a high-temperature reactor, the indirect cycle, using helium as the heat-transfer medium, was chosen. The major problems are the design of high-temperature fuel elements, construction of an exchanger to transfer heat to process streams in the range of 2,500° F., and development of compressors capable of recycling helium at 1,000° F. and above. A conceptual design of a nuclear reactor to furnish process heat for coal gasification has been made. Spherical fuel elements utilizing a graphite structure, impregnated with uranium carbide fuel, were chosen, as spheres offer the possibility of easier loading and unloading of the reactor. Calculations of pressure drop and gas-pumping power for the system are included.
