The primary non-ferrous metals industry is the principal supplier of the minor metals selenium, tellurium and bismuth. It is also a major supplier of antimony. These minor elements are recovered from by-products of base metals production. To ensure that these elements remain available, the cost of production must be compatible with four other factors - method of production, available supply, technological niches, and product stewardship. This paper first describes the relationship between the copper industry and the production of tellurium and selenium. The more complex relationship between the lead industry and bismuth production is then discussed, followed by comments on antimony availability. Product stewardship programs are essential to the growth or certain specialized markets for these metals. Smelters and refineries of non- ferrous metals will play a major role in the recycling of scraps and wastes from these markets. Examples on how such materials can be recycled are given in the paper.

Spent Ni-Cd batteries contain in the electrode materials heavy metals like Ni, Cd and Co, which must be recycled due to environmental problems. Pyrometallurgy is normally used for recycling these end-of-life products, but alternative processes by hydrometallurgy, integrating also physical operations, can be used. Hydrometallurgy seems to be useful, because metals can be efficiently recuperated in chemical forms with commercial value. The economical viability of this recycling process can be improved increasing the treatment capacity, through the application to different types of residues with similar characteristics like Ni-MH and domestic batteries, or other residues containing Ni/Co, like sludges, dusts or spent catalysts. Spent Ni-Cd batteries were first physically processed using shredding and wet sieving operations. Best results were achieved using an output of 6 mm in the shredder and 1.4-2 mm in the physical separation by wet sieving, resulting a fine fraction containing 70% of the initial electrode material and only 6% of the initial scrap. The acid leaching of the obtained material in the previous operation was studied, being the parameters like: temperature, H2SO4 concentration and the liquid/solid ratio (L/S) optimized. The values attributed to the factors which concerned the best results obtained on the leaching process were mainly influenced by Ni recovery. In opposition, Co and Cd were easily leached in a wide range of conditions. To attain an overall recovery, with minimum costs, of the three metals, the values of T~100ºC, [H2SO4]=2.3-2.7 M and L/S=8-10 L/kg were considered the most appropriate.

"Cadmium sulfide thin films were prepared on glass substrates by the spray pyrolysis technique at a substrate temperature of 490°C. Some of the films were etched by HC1 in distilled water, others were heat treated in nitrogen atmosphere, and another set of films was first etched by HC1 and then annealed. Room temperature impedance spectroscopy measurements on the films were performed using coplanar geometry in the dark and in room light in the frequency range 20 Hz to 1 MHz. The experimental data were represented by complex plane diagrams and showed one well-defined semicircle in the high frequency region. Hence the equivalent circuit that models the CdS: In thin films was found to be a single RC circuit, which indicates the bulk conduction through the grains. The influence of treatments on the electrical properties was investigated.IntroductionCadmium sulfide (CdS) is a brilliant II—VI semiconductor material with a direct band gap of 2.42 eV at room temperature. It has many outstanding physical and chemical properties, which have promising applications in multiple technical fields including photochemical catalysis, gas sensor, detectors for laser and infrared, solar cells, nonlinear optical materials, various luminescence devices, optoelectronic devices and so on [1]. There are different methods to prepare undoped and doped CdS films, such as rf sputtering [2] chemical bath deposition (CBD) [3], pulsed laser deposition (PLD) [4], and spray pyrolysis (SP) [5-11]. Of these methods, spray pyrolysis represents the less expensive option, and can produce large area high-quality low cost thin films [12]."

"The use of mixed cultures of acidophilus microorganisms that act in different temperature ranges, aims at speeding up the digestion of chalcopyrite, highly refractory sulphide mineral, the major mineral in the flotation concentrate of Caraíba Mining Co., with an attractive processing cost. The concentrate under consideration contains mainly chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and bornite (Cu5FeS4) with contents of, approximately, 70 and 30%, respectively. It was observed in this study, the performance of consortium of mesophiles, moderate and extreme thermophile microorganisms, in the oxidation of the aforementioned sulphides minerals, evaluating operational parameters such as pH of the leaching solution, the reaction temperature and redox potential, with consequent extraction of 80% of the concentrate copper content within 60 days of bioleaching. Such high copper extraction was achieved in column bioleaching tests.INTRODUCTIONThe solubilization of metals by the application of microorganisms from the mineral ores and the subsequent recovery of metals from solution are referred to as bioleaching (Rohwerder, T et al, 2003). This is an economical method for the recovery of metals from minerals; especially lowgrade ores, overburden, and waste from current mining operations which requires moderate capital investment with operating cost (Watling, 2006).Furthermore, bioleaching is generally more environmentally friendly than conventional metal recovery processes such as concentration and smelting. Those physicochemical metal extraction processes generate sulphur dioxide, a toxic emission that is increasingly the target of regulatory legislation (Stott et al., 2000; Olson et al., 2003). Bioleaching of chalcopyrite is the key industry target. The main problem hindering commercial application of chalcopyrite bioleaching is the slow dissolution rate (Fu et al, 2008).Dissolution of acid-soluble sulphide minerals such as sphalerite, and to a lesser extent chalcopyrite, occurs by a combination of ferric iron and proton attack via the polysulphide pathway (Rohwerder et al., 2003)."

The transfer of molten metal in smelting or refining operations is typically performed in open trough-type launders that are constructed of either water-cooled copper troughs or refractory lined steel jackets. This transfer can be either continuous or batch. Batch operations transfer metal through an open launder. The uncovered launder has many operational and environmental drawbacks. In order to improve workplace hygiene, designs have evolved toward ventilated launder covers that .are connected to secondary exhaust systems that use negative pressure under the cover removing fume and hot gases to secondary fume control devices. In smelting operations, a variety of covers have been employed which insulate the launder and contain the fumes and also provide additional heat along the length of the launder through a series of premix or inspiration-type burners that add combustion products to the normal fume load in the launder. Cover designs have proven to be inadequate in that hinged unventilated covers hinder convenient access while heated ventilated covers are costly to maintain. Covers that employ refractory bricks and overhead enclosure-type exhaust hoods have been somewhat successful, but restrict operator movement and require large volumes of exhaust air. An example is given of a cover and off-gas system for launders that is designed to provide superior insulation and heating capabilities, as well: as better control of the fume gases-and ease of maintenance. The cover system must maintain the balance between maintaining launder heat and fume removal. The construction of the covers must be able to withstand high internal temperatures and maintain its structural properties.

Mexicana de Cobre, which is part of Grupo Mexico, carried out studies for the construction of a copper refinery in the La Caridad Metallurgical Complex located in Nacozari, in the state of Sonora, Mexico. After the studies were concluded, the decision was made to construct a 180,000 t/y refinery using the state of the art permanent cathode Kidd Process. The basic engineering was developed by Fluor Daniel and the detail engineering and the construction were carried out in record time by the Mexican company Bufete Industrial. During the construction phase, Grupo Mexico decided to expand the refinery, and actions were taken to increase its capacity by an additional 120,000 t/y; the final result was a refinery capable of producing 300,000 tonnes of grade A cathode per year. Construction began in January 1996, and the operation of the first stage began on July 1, 1997. The operation of the second stage commenced on January 7, 1998. The capacity of the first stage was reached in November, 1997 and the total capacity of the refinery was achieved in May, 1998. This presentation describes the process and equipment installed in the refinery, the steps leading to the start-up, the operation and the results obtained during the first two years, the handling of anodes with high impurity contents, and the problems confronted and the way they have been solved. It also includes personnel productivity, the control parameters and the most relevant data on the operation of the process.

During the treatment of raw materials containing arsenic and antimony, problems in the distribution of these elements in the process products occur. In a number of cases in processing of copper-bearing materials, it is possible (or necessary) to obtain speiss. The purpose of the present research is to study the theoretical aspects and analyze the technological possibilities of producing copper-bearing speiss and the subsequent electrometallurgical processing with copper extraction as well as arsenic and antimony utilization. Copper arsenide (Cu3As) and copper antimonide (Cu3Sb) are the main components of the speiss. A thermodynamic analysis of the electrochemical oxidation of Cu3As and Cu3Sb, carried out using Pourbaix diagrams, showed that in a pH range from 0 to 2, oxidation potential 0.45-0.55V, ions of copper and arsenic and antimony trioxide are in the equilibrium. The kinetic study has shown, that with an increase in the polarization potential, the dissolution process changes from chemical to diffbsion control. An increase in temperature stabilizes the electrolysis process due to dissolution of arsenic trioxide forming on the anode. Electrolysis of speiss using a cathode diaphragm with the solution pH = 1-2, current density 150-200 A/m2 and temperature 60-70°C makes it possible to obtain cathode copper with a current efficiency of 95-96% and to remove the arsenic from the process during the electrolyte cleaning process. The arsenic content in the cathode copper did not surpass 0.002%. As the result of the research, a technological flowsheet for copper-lead speiss processing was developed. At the present time this technology is undergoing pilot testing.

"Anaerobic digestion is being taken seriously because of increasing concerns about the environmental hazards of wastes. The production of biogas, as an alternative source of energy was investigated in a designed and fabricated 200litre biogas reactor. The digester was operated on a batch-fed basis, and the feed stock was cassava waste which is readily available in Nigerian farms. The main aim was to explore other renewable sources as a means of less dependence on fossil fuels. A total of 1.94dm3/60kg waste of biogas was produced in 40 days of hydraulic retention time (HRT) with the average yield of 0.048dm3/day. The gas burned with a bluish colour indicating presence of methane (CH4). Temperature during the period of experiment varied between 27 and 330C. The pH of the slurry after the experiments averaged 3.21.1. INTRODUCTIONAnaerobic digestion and biogas production are promising means of achieving multiple environmental benefits and producing an energy carrier from renewable resources (Borjesson and Berglund, 2005).Biogas is one of the by-products of anaerobic decomposition of organic matter by microorganisms, mainly bacterial, a process referred to as anaerobic digestion.Biogas is produced by the process of anaerobic digestion of organic material by anaerobes. Biogas can be produced either from biodegradable waste materials or by the use of energy crops fed into anaerobic digester.Biogas, also called digester gas typically refers to methane produced by the fermentation of organic matter including manure, wastewater, sludge, municipal solid waste or any other biodegradable feedstock under anaerobic conditions. The content of biogas varies with the material being decomposed, and the environmental conditions involved. The gas generally composes of methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen, and hydrogen sulphide (Anunputtikul and Rodtong, 2004). Potentially, all organic waste materials contain adequate quantities of the materials essential for the growth and metabolism of the anaerobic bacterial in biogas production."

"A procedure that is being studied as a potential method for correct disposal of industrial wastes by incorporation on common clay bodies in the fabrication of structural ceramic products as bricks, blocks and roof tiles. The objective of this paper is to present the results obtained with mixtures of unburned sanitary ware wastes with a common clay from Jundiai, São Paulo, Brazil. Preliminary tests of incorporation (1,0% to 30,0% in weight) were made with hand formed spherical test bodies. With the proportion that presented spheres with the higher compression strength after drying and after firing (950°C) prismatic samples were extruded. Based on the ceramic properties of those mixtures an industrial test was performed. Six hundred hallow blocks containing 30% waste were fabricated and presented ceramic properties similar to those without incorporation. Introduction The sanitary ware segment has a very great prominence in South America, placing Brazil as one of the greater producers of the world.. Inside the country, the city of Jundiai, in the State of São Paulo is the greater producer region of this ware. Great part of the material is destined to exportation and daily it is produced high number parts. High exportation requirements make that the amount of powder waste rejects reach astronomical volumes. Until the moment too small part of that material it is re-taken with advantage, because in the own segment, there is not an economic viability, by the fact of the exigencies concerning the quality of the final product [1]. If from one side it exists that material that at the moment is deposited in landfills, or stored at the patio’s factories, from the other side the exigency of adopting exploitation rules, recycling and obedience to Laws relative to the environment as ABNT 10400, therefore it is a material that if well studied, it will certainty have a noble destiny [1]."

"As the advantage of uniform bus loading, the electroslag remelting (ESR) furnaces with three - phase installation by delta or star connection are mainly used to produce the large or super large ingot. The electrical efficiency is significantly improved as the short circuiting through the molten slag. However, little is found about fiindamental research on the electromagnetic field of the ESR system with three -phase installation. A three-dimensional (3D) finite element model was developed to simulate the current density, magnetic field, electromagnetic force and Joule heating for a system of electrode, slag and ingot in the ESR system with three -phase installation.IntroductionThe metallurgical performance of the ingot is the fundament and precondition to obtain the large forging of high quality, which has a critical role in the producing of forging. The electroslag process (ESR) to product the metal materials of high homogenization and clarity become more and more popular[1].The electroslag process is a special smelting technology of producing small ingots, which originate in 1950[2].At present the three, four or six electrode is used in large scale electroslag furnace. It has been found that the deeper molten pool and the wider of the two-phase zone with only one large diameter of electrode to product large ingot effect the solidification microstructure of ingot[3]. However, the molten pool becomes shallow relatively with several electrodes producing the large ingot, which is benefit to the solidification microstructure of ingot. Three electrodes electroslag remelting furnace take the three phase equilibrium power supply to making the load and electric power network balance, avoiding the distortion phenomenon induced by single phase power supply and saving electric power. It also can uniformize the distribution of heat source."

Recycling of solid wastes, a common practice nowadays, requires the separation of the different materials in order to increase the products added value. The separation of one plastic from mixtures of different types of plastics is not easy due to their similar physical properties, but different techniques are available, from automatic sorting systems based on optical sensors to techniques adapted from mineral processing, namely gravity, froth flotation and electrostatic processes. In the last decade, many researchers have addressed the separation?s problem of different polymers, like Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), two polymers commonly used in packaging which have similar density. One proposed technique is the classical froth flotation performed in agitated cells. Froth flotation is a versatile and relatively cheap process widely used in mineral separation. It is based on the different behaviour of particles in the presence of an inter-phase air-water, which depends on the materials surfaces properties. Froth flotation can be affected by some variables such as impeller speed and air flow rate. Agitated cells, when used with low density materials, like plastics, can produce overstated turbulence that prevents the adhesion and collection of particles in the froths. In this case, separation is favoured by column flotation smoother hydrodynamics. This paper proposes the separation of PET from PVC by column flotation. The experimental work was carried out in a column of 9cm diameter and 1m high. The effects of some operating conditions, such as depressor and frother concentration, air flow rate and feed grain size on products grade and recovery were evaluated and the best flotation conditions for the separation of these plastics were established.

All integrated steel plants have hospitals of 650 – 750 bed capacity with modern facilities to serve it's employees and adjoining localities in a clean and sustainable environment.According to the Bio-Medical Waste(Management and Handling) Rules, 1998 and as amended to date, all Bio-Medical waste which is generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human beings or in research activities pertaining thereto or in the production or testing of biologicals are to be categorized and taken to any facility wherein treatment, disposal of this waste or processes incidental to such treatment or disposal is carried out.The hospital management has created adequate treatment facility for Sharp and Infectious Waste, Pathological Waste and Anatomical Waste through Autoclave, Shredding Machine and developing deep burial pits. Some of these hospitals is ISO 9000-14000 certified. "In the duplex melting process, chromium forms chromium spinels, the study of which will help to exploit the Hongge ores (rich in chromium) in the Panzhihua-Xichang area in China. Mimicked chromium slag was synthesized. The oxidation and decomposition mechanism of the Fe-Cr spinels contained was studied in a sodium roasting process. The effects of temperature, roasting time, amount of soda added and filling reagents were investigated. The leaching-reduction-precipitation-calcination procedure to extract Cr2CO3 was optimized. The results showed that the optimized roasting temperature was 1000~1020°C with a stoichiometric Na2CO3 addition and without any filling reagents. Roasted materials were leached with distilled water and were filtered to obtain a chromium-containing solution, which was adjusted to pH 1.60-1.80. A reducing reagent, NaHSO3, was added in a stoichiometric ratio and the solution was then adjusted to pH 7.25~8.25. Maximum Cr2O3 precipitation was obtained and the precipitate was calcined at 1050°C for 2h to obtain Cr2Ü3 with recovery rate over 96%.IntroductionChromium is widely applied in the metallurgical industry, in refractory materials and in the chemical industry with its particular properties of hardness, wear-resistance, high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance [1]. There is no free state of chromium in nature and chromite is the main chromium containing mineral [2], China is poor in chromium resources, despite its large demand, and there are few deposits of high grade of chromite ores except in some regions in Tibet and Xinjiang province [1, 4]. Hongge, one of largest titanomagnetite mines in Panzhihua-Xichang area, is a polymetallic deposit mainly containing iron and titanium; it is also associated with various beneficial elements such as chromium, copper, nickel, etc. [3]. As investigated in Reference 3, the chromium reserves of Hongge ores are so large that it is of great importance to study how to extract the chromium from them."

"The purpose of this work was to study the reutilization of the steelmaking dust, derived from steel production in the electric arc furnace (EAF), in iron ore sintering process aiming zinc elimination. In each sintering process were collected sintered samples, these materials were analyzed by chemical analysis using atomic absorption spectrophotometry in order to determine the zinc content. Samples of not sintered mixtures were also characterized by chemical analysis aiming to determine the initial amounts of zinc, i.e. in order to check the zinc amounts present in the mixture before the sintering process. The comparation among the zinc contents of samples sintered and not sintered allowed to determine the elimination of zinc during the experiments. Results showed that the zinc elimination in the process is proportional to the ratio reducer/waste. The zinc removal was lower when the reducer/waste ratio was decreased.IntroductionThe electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a residue generated in the steelmaking process using electric arc furnace. Aproximately 30% of all steel produced (in the year 2009) was obtained through electric arc furance (EAF). In the United States of America the percentage of this process in the total crude steel production was about 62% in 2009, while in 2000 this percentage was only 47% [1].The iron ore sintering is a process that reuses wastes generated in metallurgical industries. However, the materials used must be physical and chemical characteristics compatible with the blast furnaces.The quantity of zinc, cadmium, chrome and other metals present in the EAFD depends on the quality of the scrap used to feed the EAF and the type of steel that it is been made [2,3]. The reuse of EAFD waste is interesting to steelmaking processes because of its iron content. However the presence of zinc inside a blast furnace is undesirable since the zinc oxide can be deposited on the blast furnace walls and in the drivers of gas output, interrupting the flow. Another part of the zinc oxide can form deposits on the refractory lining of the blast furnace [4,5]."

An industrial wastewater, including plating wastes, is treated with sodium sulfide and ferrous sulfate to form a sulfide-oxide precipitate containing chromium and other toxic metals. Hydrocarbons, in the water, coat the sulfide-oxide particles, impeding metal recovery. Froth flotation, without reagent addition, was found to recover 93.9% of the solids from the sludge with simultaneous rejection of 89% of the water. Methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) improved recovery and potassium amyl xanthate improved both recovery and grade. The process design has wastewater feed (without MIBC) to the rougher circuit. The rougher concentrate is conditioned with MIBC and fed to a cleaner circuit to achieve a high grade concentrate. About 95% of the water is recirculated to the waste treatment plant.

Sensor controlled sorting is a promising technique for the upgrading of scrap aluminium alloys. In a universal detection system of Delft University characteristic features are extracted · from the material particles by means of cameras. Examples are size, texture, edge-structure, homogeneity, and colour pattern. Additional sensors are added for higher selectivity: electromagnetic detection, light transmission, spectral reflection and more. Signal processing theory learns that a classification of particles fundamentally improves as the number of independent features increases. At the laboratories of the Delft University a test bench is available for the development of advanced multi-sensor quality control and sorting systems. It is based on a software system for detection, segmentation and classification of particles, which was especially developed for this application. Work is now in progress for high-speed detection and sorting of non-ferrous alloys, including aluminium casting and wrought alloys. A recently developed actuator design enables positive sorting into more than 3 fractions of particles that are randomly orientated on a flat conveyor belt.

"Inherent rapid cooling in laser processing often produces novel materials due to nonequilibrium partitioning during solidification. This paper reports theoretical and experimental investigations on in situ alloy formation with extended solid solution.A mathematical model for determining the composition of metastable alloys and the effects of various process parameters on the composition of extended solid solution is presented. To model the nonequilibrium partitioning of solute in concentrated solution, rate equations and conservation of mass equations are used and an expression for nonequilibrium partition coefficients is derived for concentrated solution, which is realistic for laser alloying and cladding. Effect of rapid cooling on solute segregation is presented by deriving an expression for nonequilibrium partition coefficient.Experiments were performed with Ni-AI and Ni-Hf systems to obtain the composition of solute in the extended solid solution produced during laser cladding."

This paper undertakes to assess what opportunities exist for the economical recovery of non-ferrous metals from spent catalysts. The most promising recovery appears to lie with metals such as Co, Mo, Ni, W, heterogeneous catalysts used on a large scale in petroleum processing. Nickel is a metal with diverse applications on a large scale notably in hydrocarbon steam reforming and in vegetable oil hydrogenation. In addition, several of the precious metals, notably Pt, Pd, and Rh, find extensive use in fossil fuel processing and in automotive and power plant flue gas control. The hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical alternatives for processing are identified and discussed, especially with citations to illustrate reduction to commercial practice. Promising directions for adaptation of appropriate, economic separation technologies for recovery of non-ferrous catalytic metals generated in significant amounts for the secondary metal markets are identified. "B, Ti, Ag, AI and Cu substituted hydroxyl apatites were synthesized via precipitation method. Then the samples were air-sintered at 1300°C for 2 hrs and characterized with XRD, SEM, FTIR, and cell adhesion behaviors.IntroductionSynthetic hydroxylapatite (HA, Ca10(P04)6(0H)2) has a similar composition and structure to biological apatite. Therefore, it has been safely and extensively used as an implant material for bone substitute. However, synthetic HA has been used for a various applications including medical or non-medical applications, such as matrices for drug release control, bone cements, tooth paste additive, blood purification agent, monolithic implants or coatings on metallic implants, packing media for column chromatography, gas sensors, catalysis and host materials for lasers and luminescent materials, etc. [1-9].The major factors affecting the performance of HA on these applications are crystal morphology, density, porosity, pore size and distribution, chemical composition, and surface structure. As provided by the high flexibility of the apatite structure a great variety of cationic and anionic species can be substituted into HA structure which is specifically considered as an effective method to modify the properties of HA [10,11]."

Heap leaching presents a complex physico-chemical process to model and a significant challenge to develop a comprehensive model enabling reliable predictions of heap behavior over the long term. A computational modeling framework is described for the analysis of multi-phase flows in reactive porous media suitable for tracking metals recovery, for example, in heap leaching and environmental recovery processes. This modeling framework employs appropriately formulated, parameterized, and solution procedures to capture: 1) liquid and gas flow through heterogeneous porous media subject to variably saturated flow conditions, 2) the complex and dynamically changing nature of the porous media structure, 3) the transport of reactants and products of reaction, 4) the simultaneous mass and heat transfer, and 5) the role of bacteria as a catalyst for reactions. A second class of challenges to accurately model heap processes is to identify and then capture all the process data to characterize the reactivity of particular ores, the mine planning for the construction of the heap, leach schedules, meteorological data, etc. The objective of this paper is to outline these challenges and to describe a modeling framework that can cope with arbitrarily complex geometries and provide tools for rapid and accurate process assessment.
