During the last few years, when a new tankhouse or a major modernization has been planned, automatic or semiautomatic crane and grab systems have at least been considered. It seems that in the future tankhouse managers for new, modernized and even old tankhouses will be looking for a proven and reliable system for automatically moving and positioning electrode loads in the tankhouse and in storage areas. In this paper, we will describe the Wenmec solution for automatic electrode handling. The advantages of automatic handling and very accurate electrode positioning will be discussed, and the way Wenmec has solved the problems in mechanical construction and in automatic, accurate and reliable positioning will be presented.

"Cyclic heat stewed slag washing water carries high content of alkali and calcium and may cause serious tube scaling and impose an adverse impact on normal production. This study proposes a solution to utilize washing water by absorbing and mineralizing CO2, potentially restraining scaling and being able to create calcium carbonate powders. Effects of water flux on water quality, utilization ratio of CO2 and yield of calcium carbonate powder have been investigated; meanwhile, features of calcium carbonate powder are also represented. On the other hand, effects of factors such as as injection flux, pressure of CO2 on utilization ratio of CO2, morphology and purity of calcium carbonate are also investigated. The results show unambiguously that after soften injection of CO2, calcium ions were removed effectively via precipitation, alleviating the scaling problem. High purity yet fine carbonate powder could be achieved.IntroductionNowadays, 0.34 tons of blast furnace slags will be produced when producing 1 ton of pig iron; ensuing that, 0.12 tons of steel slag will be generated with 1 ton steel production while 1.57 billion tons of steel output all over the world in the year of 2012. It is therefore a critical issue to realize zero discharge of steel slags to achieve sustainable development and cyclic economy of iron and steel industry. In recent years, research institute of MCC and China JINGYE engineering company developed a heat stewed steel slag self-decomposition technology GENERATION III to solve the problem of instability of steel slags and realize the zero discharge. However, the problem of circulation line scaling which may cause the clogging, even exploding, need to be solved. The principles of the technology are: directly spraying water to the high temperature steel slag when it is poured into the hot closed pot, realizing the selfdecomposition via utilizing the waste heat of steel slag. The washing water is recycled to achieve a cyclic utilization. The process is shown in Figure 1."

Zia Metallurgical Processes, Inc. has developed and patented a steelmaking process capable of converting iron bearing metallurgical wastes into high quality steel products. The process utilizes a proprietary design rotary hearth furnace to convert iron bearing wastes, pelletized with coal, or other forms of carbon, into direct reduced iron (DRI). This DRI is fed, hot, from the rotary hearth furnace into a Zia All Purpose Vessel (ZAV) where it is smelted and refined into high quality steel. A specially designed turret with three independent arms, each supporting a separate ZAV, comprises the heart of the meltshop. No overhead cranes are required to transport molten metal from the smelting/refining operation to the ladle metallurgy station to the caster to an inspection station and back to the smelting/refining point. The molten steel is contained in the ZAV throughout the operations eliminating the possibility of steel con¬tamination by non-metallic inclusions occasioned by the exposure to ambient air during metal transfer into ladles. The result is the creation of very clean steel that can be alloyed to produce virtually any desired grade from stainless steel to common structural steel.

The so-called "fayalite" slag, despite problems associated with it, is the most widely used slag in copper smelting processes. Thirty years ago, in order to overcomes some drawbacks of this slag a new "calcium ferrite" slag was proposed especially for continuous copper converting. Since both slags have strong and weak points depending on the field of their application about 8 years ago another new "ferrous calcium silicate" slag was proposed that is expected to solve the drawbacks of each slag. This new slag is defined as mainly consisting of FeOx, CaO and SiO2 as its main components but it can practically have several combinations of these constituents. In order to determine the best area of this slag for possible industrial application the quantification of phase relations is an important subject. In this paper the work carried out by the authors in quantifying through an original physical model the phase relations, liquidus surface, liquidus regions, behavior of solid phases and the effect of minor components is reviewed. Several special compositions of this slag have been identified and discussed for possible applications in the industrial practice.

Based on the current reality of the copper smelters industry, besides the advances that have been and are expected for the next few years, the authors present a futurist vision of the processing of copper concentrates and copper smelters in the years 2000. Outlined new development strategies and ways of improvement in this business, including research, development and management of the works that today posses characteristics of a profitable operation, as well as the changes expected with respect to the entry of new actors and the creation of new products The authors finally bet for small or tailor-made smelters with ad hoc technology for their raw materials and few units to coordinate -devoted to specific concentrates using high technology and low manpower. Considering the in-situ hydrometallurgical route, as well as the pyrometallurgical route in works or conversion facilities that buy or process white metal and produce copper and other metals associated with this such as gold and silver, besides sulfuric acid, plants which should be strategically located in zones with high sulfuric acid price to make this a product which contributes to the profitability of the business.

The performance of mould fluxes in satisfying its quality requirements can have a significant effect on the efficiency of the continuous casting process and on the surface quality of the products. This performance is affected by various parameters including the characteristics of the mould fluxes, the quality of the steel being cast and the operational conditions of the caster. The extremely complex relationships involving the parameters mentioned above make it very difficult to have simple criteria for selecting mould fluxes for casting a certain grade of steel in a continuous casting machine. These difficulties led steelmakers and mould flux suppliers to select mould fluxes based mainly on plant trials. In the present work, a software to help in the analysis and development of mould fluxes for continuous casting was developed. This software includes several models for prediction of mould flux viscosity and consumption. A mathematical model was also used to predict the heat flux through the mould flux. The proposed methodology was applied to continuous casting of crack sensitive steels. Some of the results given by this software are presented, discussed and compared to plant data.

"In this paper, firstly the 3D single-phase turbulent steady fluid flow in a vessel with four baffles stirred by a single impeller is mathematically simulated. Turbulence is modeled by using the standard k - e model. Sliding-grid method is used to model the impeller. The flow domain is divided into two cylindrical, the inner one rotates at the same speed as the impeller, and the outer one is fixed with the baffles. Results indicate that the high-speed zone is near the paddles, and larger stirring speed generates larger fluid flow velocity. The calculated stirring intensity data are used to analyze the experimental results. Secondly the effects, such as filter pore size, gas flow rate and NaCl concentration, on bubble size are studied by experiment. For the particle removal rate by bubble flotation in this vessel, first order kinetics is adopted. The effects of initial number of the particles, gas flow rate, particle and bubble size, stirring speed and surface condition, on the removal rate constant are discussed, and an empirical equation is derived by experimental data. At last, a simple model is developed to study the particle attachment probability on bubble surface under turbulent flow conditions. IntroductionIt is well known that inclusions have a bad effect on steel quality. Trying to remove inclusions from liquid steel as many as possible is one of the main objects for the metallurgical workers. Lots of ways are developed to remove inclusions from liquid steel. Gas injection is an effective one. This technique is used to achieve homogeneity in the temperature and metal composition and to assist in the removal of second phase and dissolved impurities from molten steel. Gas injection is commonly applied to the secondary metallurgy processes and continuous casting, for example the ladle argon gas treatment, RH vacuum degassing, and the gas injection in the Submerged Entry Nozzles (SEN) of continuous casting mold, etc. The development of these processes focuses on achieving two conditions: fine bubbles and good mixing. Fine bubbles provide a large gas/liquid interfacial area and a high attachment probability to inclusions, and good mixing enhances the efficiency of impurity transfer."

At KGHM Polska Miedz S.A, a direct flash smelting process is used for smelting of chalcocite concentrate for the production of blister copper. The paper presents a model of complex oxidation process of single concentrate grains smelted at KGHM. The description covers main chemical reactions, phenomena of heat and mass exchange inside the grains and between a grain and the surrounding space. In the model, two zones describing the course of process inside the grain were distinguished: ? The first one, which moves faster towards the centre of a grain, both organic and carbonate carbon are freed, The process takes place without the presence of oxygen and results in an increase of the temperature in the core of the particle. ?The second zone moves slower into the grain and the rate of the movement is determined by the presence of oxygen, In that zone the sulphur is eliminated and the oxidation of the organic compounds vapours moving from deeper layers of a grain takes place. Based on the results of laboratory tests, the coefficients that describe the oxygen transportation into the grain and decide the progress in the chemical reaction were determined, The paper contains the results of model calculations for single grains reacting in environment of various content of oxygen as well as the results of model calculations for the laboratory reactor system.

Aluminum has experienced significant growth in automotive applications over the last decade as a result of its properties and performance attributes. Looking to the future, the opportunities for continued growth in powertrain and suspension applications plus light weighting of body structures offer the potential for considerable further growth. This represents a growing "energy bank" of aluminum that will become available for recycling at the end of these vehicles' lives. Today, around 90% of the aluminum is recovered and recycled from scrapped vehicles because of its high value relative to other materials. The future growth offers opportunity for new technology and practices, to maximize scrap quality and recycling application. This paper will review the demand for these new technologies and practices and will discuss industry activities being pursued in this area.

Although nowadays gold extraction methods are very abundant, none of them is satisfying, especially, in the field of heap leaching of low grade gold ore. The traditional heap leaching method of cyanide method plays an inglorious role of badly environmental pollution. In this paper, a bran-new and innoxious method of gold extraction system, metal-ammonium-chloride-ammonia (MACA), was proposed, and also analyzed both thermodynamically and practically. Thermodynamically, according to the principles of simultaneous chemical equilibrium and electronic charge neutrality, the thermodynamics of Au-NH4Cl-NH3-H2O system was studied by using the exponential computation method and through MATLAB programming, and the solid figure of its potential - c(NH4Cl) - c(NH4OH) was drawn. The results showed when the concentrate of ammonia is higher than 0.6 mol?L-1, fAu+/Au is only about -0.2 v. Practically, the leaching results of a cuprous gold ore showed that the extraction of gold can reach to 80% in this system. The preliminary results of reduction of the rich solution with copper and zinc powders showed that with deoxygenizing, the reduction effects were relatively good. These new findings and results have established a theoretical and practical base for developing a new process for heap leaching of low grade gold ores in this system. And the new process owns a series of merits such as, non-cyanogens, nontoxic, broader applicability.

The lack of suitable means of storing hydrogen for use in the transport sector is generally viewed as a primary showstopper for a hydrogen economy. Recent developments within solid state hydrogen storage in complex hydrides and metal ammines have sparked new hope of a long term solution, but as of now, no materials fulfill all the DoE targets for onboard storage [1]. A detailed physical understanding of the ab-/desorption processes and the role of the essential catalytic additives is an essential prerequisite for the development of new optimized hydrogen storage systems. Here, we illustrate the potential of utilizing the synergy of combining state-of-the-art in theoretical methods and experimental techniques in the analysis and design of materials for hydrogen storage. Recent advances in computer hard- and software has made it possible to treat many of the essential problems in such materials, i.e. structural stability, hydrogen dissociation and diffusion, with high accuracy methods like density functional theory. We rely on such results to guide our synthesis of new materials, and to interpret our experimental results from, e.g. time dependant in situ x-ray diffraction, synchrotron/neutron experiments, and advanced materials testing. Through a continuous feed-back optimization loop between theory and experiments, the obtained nano-scale insight is used to expedite the design and development of novel materials for hydrogen storage.

"The COREX process is the first reduction ironmaking technology with coal and pure oxygen to get high quality hot metal, which consumes a lot of high quality lump coal and some coke. In order to increase the utilization of fine coal, reduce coke consumption and enhance the competitiveness of the technology, the combustion behavior of pulverized coal injection in melter gasifier is studied experimentally. The results show that the combustion rate of PCI increases with the increase of temperature. And the combustion rate increases with decreasing coal particle size. Compared bituminous coal with anthracite, the former’s burning ratio is higher than the latter in the same granularity. The combustion effect is remarkable when coal blend of bituminous coal and anthracite with the smaller particle size is pulverized in COREX process.IntroductionThe COREX process is the first reduction ironmaking technology with raw coal and pure oxygen to get high quality hot metal, which consumes a lot of high quality lump coal [1-3]. However, the proportion of lump coal in raw coal is very small, and it is avoidless to produce fine coal because of mechanical coal cutter and storage and transportation process, so it is important to resolve utilization of fine coal in COREX ironmaking process in order to energy conservation and reduce the cost of hot metal [4]. Currently, Coal briquetting technology is adopted to utilization of fine coal in COREX process [5], but coal briquetting system has high investment cost and requires feasible adhesive agent. The pulverized coal injection (PCI) into a blast furnace is being used on a global scale to improve the stability and reduce the cost of blast furnace operations [6]. The successful development of PCI in blast furnace is contributed to pulverized coal in COREX melter gasifier. However, it is different in PCI process between COREX melter gasifier and blast furnace, and the differences are as follows: firstly, The air is injected into blast furnace, which temperature is about 1200 ?, but in COREX melter gasifier the normal temperature oxygen is blasted, so PCI in blast furnace begin burning in blowpipe, but the combustion of PCI in COREX melter gasifier is only in raceway. Secondly, the racway of COREX is smaller than that of blast furnace of the same size. So, the combustion behavior of PCI is complex in COREX melter gasifier, which is not use for reference."

There are many experimental works on the investigation of temperature effect on the conductivity of polymers filled by carbon materials. However frequently the establishment of current nature in the polymer heterogeneous systems becomes difficult. This fact is explained by complexity of calculation of different physical or chemical phenomena passing in materials at variation of the temperature. Among these phenomena it must be noted some morphological changes in the structure of polymers. These changes reflex on the structure of conductive system of composites. So, it has been shown, that the character of temperature dependence of thermal noises level and conductivity of some polymers filled by carbon black essentially depend on some relaxation transition in the polymeric matrix. In this paper the effect of difference transitions in polymer matrix of filled by carbon black some polymers and rubbers have been investigated in a wide temperature range. The importance of such investigation is due to possibility of application of resistive temperature sensors based on conductive polymeric composites (CPC) to measuring technology. The experiments have been carried out in the cavity with regulation of temperature in the range 110-650K. The resistance of samples was measured by four electrodes method. The samples were obtained by hot pressing of dry mixture of powdered components at chosen temperatures, pressures and cooling time in the case of plastics and by peroxide vulcanization of the elastomers in the case of the rubbers. The samples were produced on the basis of the following thermoplastics: low density polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polycarbonate and polydimethylmethylvinilsiloxane.

A new approach is described for the calculation of the kinetics of metal/slag, metal/slag/gas, and metal/matte/slag/gas reactions. The algorithm assumes that equilibrium is achieved at the interface between phases, and uses an equilibrium solver (such as SOLGASMIX) to compute the equilibrium state at the interface at each time step during the reaction. For multiple phase systems a number of unit operations, representing the different phases and interfaces, must be connected together in a reasonalbly complex manner, and the METSIM software package has been utilized for this purpose. The new approach is superior to the SMAK software developed by the author and his co-workers over the past decade, for the reasons discussed in this paper.

"The chemical reactions of fluoride and chloride gases with metal chloride or metal oxide are utilized as an effective treatment for harmless disposal. These chemical reactions can be adopted in the temperature range of 80°C~400°C, which is lower than that in the combustion treatment (800°C). Reaction products are metal fluoride or metal chloride which are a harmless and a valuable chemical material as one of new resources. This paper, concerns with a new harmless disposal treatment of toxic global warming gases.IntroductionNew technology to make fluoride and chloride gases such as NF3, CF4, SF6 BF3, Cl2 and BCl3 harmless has been developed and a new concept on the removing toxic gas to be used in the advanced process of materials has been established. The fluoride gases ~re toxic and special type of gases to be used in the process of manufacturing semiconductors and their specific applications include the dry etching of semiconductors, cleaning of CVD systems, an oxidation agent for rocket fuel etc. Especially, NF3 is also attracting an attention as a high-energy source for chemical laser systems. As a fluoride gas like NF3 is, however; toxic and highly stable chemically, if discharged into the atmosphere, it is liable to cause far-reaching adverse influences on global warming in the same manner as carbon dioxide gas and feron gas.Up till now, the combustion treatment method has been adopted for the disposal of the gas, and when treating the gas by high-temperature combustion (800""C), the generation of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx) and hydrogen fluoride (HF) have been confirmed: These chemical substances are not only linked with an intense c0rrosion of the combustion systems but also create the generation of atmospheric pollution and acid rains, and therefore, constitute a serious social issue."

"In the present paper, recovery of valuable metals from the poly-cracked ash obtained by pyrolysis of discarded PCBs has been studied following physical beneficiation and a hydrometallurgical process alternate to smelting. The ash is subjected to comminution for the separation of metallic components from non-metallic fractions by scrubbing, tabling and froth flotation which enriched the metal in the concentrate -97% which was further screened to separate high and low metal concentrate. The finer fraction containing -12% metallic value was leached in acidic solution. Almost all (Cu, Pb, Fe, etc) were leached in 4M HN03 at 90°C in 75 min at a pulp density 100 g/L. The characterization of both ash and residues were made by XRD, EPMA, EDS, etc. to validate the experimental results. The metals from the leach liquor could be recovered/separated using solvent extraction techniques which can further be processed to get pure metal salts/ sheets.IntroductionPrinted circuit boards (PCBs) are an essential component of electrical and electronic equipments (EEEs) as it plays an important role during operation of these devices. The world market of PCBs has reached nearly $60 billion in 2012, with 1.7 percent real growth over 2011 [1]. The diverse technology-driven global market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 5% by 2014 [2]. The waste EEEs are generated due to replacement of obsolete equipments with modem ones and thus their demand is also increasing rapidly [3]. The discarded e-wastes are being piled up as landfills which affect the environment and cause health threats to living organisms, if not disposed of properly. These e-wastes contain metals some of which are precious, few are hazardous and others as valuable."

Exploration for gold .deposits on Hispaniola has taken place sporadically over the years but has expanded in the past decade. There are veintype, disseminated, alluvial and elluvial deposits. Investigations were previously undertaken in Haiti by combined Haitian, Bureau of Mines, and UN geological teams at Grand Bois Limbe(Milot) and Cap Coq areas. Later studies were conducted at the Miches and Moncion districts. Gold occurrences were reported in quartz, silicic-barite veins and gossans. An important deposit ?at Pueblo Viejo is? a disseminated type where extraction is taking place in the oxidized zone. Exploration by Japanese and West German firms with local geologists are described in this paper together with Pueblo Viejo, Miches, Restauracion, Milot, and Meme ?areas where occurrences are known. Copper deposits with associated gold va1ues are also described. These include vein deposits in Central Cordillera and disseminated deposits at Terrier Rouge and Blondin.

"In order to produce high quality metalized products and prevent from burden cohesion during pre-reduction, self-fluxed pellets were made for COREX process in the paper. The effects of reduction temperature and reducing gas composition on pre-reduction behaviors of self-fluxed pellets are studied. The results show that the prereduced pellets have poor quality and deposited carbon appears when the reduction temperature is between 600°C and 700°C. The metallization rate, reduction degree and compressive strength of prereduced pellets are promoted by the elevating reduction temperature and mole fraction of H2. Pellets reduced by pure H2 at 800°C have high metallization rate (96.2%), reduction degree (99.4%) and compressive strength (960N/pellet). In all tests, self-fluxed pellets display normal swelling (RSI<l5%) behavior which reveals that self-fluxed pellets are suitable for COREX process. Increasing reduction temperature and mole fraction ofH2 in reducing gas is benefit for pre-reduction of pellets.IntroductionCompared with Blast Furnace, the COREX process has advantages of short flow sheet, using non-coke coal and high-energy utilization. Acidic pellets and lump ores are the chief iron- bearing burden for COREX process which could lead to low melting point substance appearing in per-reduction process. In addition, the acidic hematite pellets tend to swell during the reduction [1-3]. This will result in decreasing compressive strength of pellets, burden cohesion, bad air permeability and poor work status in shaft furnace. Adding carbonate flux could restrain burden bonding to some extent in actual production, but decomposition of carbonate flux increases energy consumption. Worse still, weak reduction potential is unfavorable to iron material reduction [ 4, 5]."

In this study, the analysis method of trace element in pure indium using glow discharge mass spectrometry (GD-MS) has been established by correcting the analysis result, which was obtained from non-standard quantitative method of GD-MS. The effect of instrument operating parameters, the resolution and isotopes and the pre-sputtering time on the determination results were investigated respectively. The optimized operating parameters of the instrument were obtained as follows: the discharge current was 37.5mA and discharge airflow was 475ml/min. Mass spectral interferences have been eliminated using selected resolution and isotope. The pre-sputtering time was 30 min. 4 trace elements in two pure samples were determined for 6 times. The RSD were less than 20%. The content of trace elements in indium samples was determined by GD-MS and Chemical Analysis Method of Indium which is tested by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, respectively. The results were consistent with each other.
