This research was undertaken to establish the lncendivity of aluminum alloys against rusty steel under frictional impact conditions at typical coal mine fan speeds, to determine any differences in incendivity among various aluminum alloys, and to Investigate less incendive materials as substitutes for aluminum alloys. With a specially designed apparatus, three aluminum casting alloys and three constructional steels were tested for incendivity in frictional impact against rusted steel in flammable methane-air mixtures. Although varying in degree, all aluminum alloys investigated exhibited a high ignition probability under the test conditions; none of the steel specimens tested caused any ignitions under the same conditions.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation on the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Neutron Activator Laboratory Analyzer used for Rapid Analysis for Ore Blending, Stripping, and Mine Control BAUXITE is a rock and not a mineral. Since it is a rock, its mineral content varies depending upon the parent material, the topographic location of the deposit and the severity of the weathering and oxidation processes which produced it. At Bauxite, Arkansas the major mineralogical constituent of the bauxite is gibbsite with ~IL- purities of silica, iron oxide, and titania minerals. Minor amounts of other minerals are found. Chemical composition varies from 45% to 60% alumina, 5% to 25% silica, 1% to 15% ferric oxide, and 1% to 3% titania. The Arkansas bauxite region is located entirely within the north- central area of the West Gulf Coastal Plain near the northwestern boundary with the Interior Highlands. The region trends northeast-southwest and is about 42 kilometers long. It is divided into two districts; one in Saline County and the other in Pulaski County. The Saline District is the most important since it has produced most of the bauxite. This district is located at Bauxite, Arkansas and the deposits are found around the flanks of the Saline Dome. It is roughly square-shaped and is about 190 square kilometers in area. The source rock for the deposits is a Late Cretaceous, grey, nepheline syenite.

Indonesia is the world’s largest supplier of nickel ore, with its nickel laterite resources mainly distributed in the Moluccas and Sulawesi regions. However, there is scant research on the mineralogical characteristics of nickel laterite deposited in southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study aims to investigate the mineral phase structure, chemical analysis, thermal properties and element distribution characteristics of the middle and lower part of the rotten rock zone located in the southeast Sulawesi ophiolite belt.

Vehicle fires in underground mines pose a certain risk for which measures to prevent or mitigate the fires are highly important. Fire protection measures can be divided into active and passive measures, where active measures require an external power to work in the event of a fire, and passive measures could include an existing partition preventing fire spread. As passive fire protection does not rely on activation, it is expected to provide high reliability and a robust solution, and should be considered during the design process. This paper investigates passive fire protection measures that could be implemented in the design of mining vehicles. It was found that passive fire protection should include the use of several measures simultaneously to ensure fire protection throughout the different phases of a fire. Threshold distances for fuel components were calculated, and it was found that combining hydraulic hoses and electrical cables resulted in larger threshold distances. A pool fire along the underside of a vehicle will pose a certain risk, and passive measures should be focused on ignition prevention, making high demands on the insulation/shielding along the underside. Any occurring tire fire may pose a challenge, and the priority should be on preventing ignition. Potential measures include shielding the wheelhouse and applying fire-resistant sealings.

Cerro Colorado lies on the eastern edge of the Atacama Desert in the foothills of the Andean Cordillera of northern Chile. Compañía Minera Cerro Colorado SA (CMCC) operates Cerro Colorado. CMCC, headquartered in Santiago, Chile, is wholly owned by Rio Algom Ltd., of Toronto, Ontario. Cerro Colorado is located 120 km (75 miles)east of the port city of Iquique. Access is by 30 km (19 miles) of paved highway and 70 km (43 miles) of upgraded road. The mine site is located at an altitude of 2600 m (8531 ft) on a gentle west-sloping plateau adjacent to a deep canyon (Quebrada de Parca) to the north. Temperatures are moderate, ranging from 5° to 30° C (41° to 86° F) with an average annual rainfall of 20 mm (0.8 in.). The plateau is generally covered with 20 to 30 m (65 to 100 ft) of Quatemary sand and gravel overlaying bedrock. In the immediate vicinity of the Cerro Colorado deposit, a semicircular embayment has been eroded into a steep canyon wall that cuts through the surface gravels to expose a considerable section of the underlying bedrock.

A model has been developed to relate the velocities of seismic waves in unconsolidated permafrost to the porosity and the extent of freezing. The permafrost is idealized as an assemblage of spherical quartz grains imbedded in a matrix which itself is composed of spherical water inclusions in ice. The theory of Kuster and Toksöaz, based on wave-scattering considerations, is used to determine the effective elastic moduli, and hence the wave speeds. The model predicts Vp and Vs to be decreasing functions of both the porosity and the water/ice ratio, and Vp/Vs to be an increasing function of these two parameters. The theory has been applied to laboratory measurements of shear and compressional wave velocities in thirty-three permafrost samples from different sites in the North American Arctic. Although no direct measurements were made of the extents of freezing in these samples, the data are consistent with the predictions of the model. The theory can be used to infer the extent of freezing of the water in the pore spaces, based on knowledge of the porosity and either of the two wave speeds.

With passage of the Federal coal' Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, many challenges have been directed to the industry's mining and safety engineers. The most critical challenge is that of ventilation. The language concerning ventilation in many sections of the Act could very well deprive or limit the mining engineer in planning the ventilation for new mines, since the Act requires federal approval of all ventilation plans. Dependent upon approval and of course application of the law, this could, due to economics, prohibit the opening of new mines in some cases. Petitions for modification of some mandatory standards relating to ventilation have already been filed under Section 301(c). It is quite possible that many of these standards may be modified.

The successful exploration for Austin Taylor and Gen. McRae from 1931 to 1940 obscured the fact that I was reaching a period of transition. This was true both in personal and business life. It was probably fortunate that I did not realize how great a change must come after I passed the age of 50. In the personal life of our family the change came when both our children left home to go to school or college. This made home a different place and, because of the absence of the children, Dorothy could devote much of her time and attention to the art she loved so well. She could spend long periods in New York, the center of the nation's art life. Vacations at Tahoe and long pleasure trips made the separation from the children less disturbing but it could never again be the same as it had been in the first 20 years of our marriage. The change In my business life was just as complete, though a little more gradual. While work for Bralorne and General McRae made the "bite" of the Great Depression less painful for us than it was for most consultants and their families, the fact that I was getting older made a new sort of work inevitable. I was 50 years old and the total grew rapidly. Planes and automobiles that made travel easier even in the wilds of Alaska and northern Canada still made it possible for me to look at new prospects, but increasingly often I was exhausted at the end of a day's climb and, if the nature of my work did not change there would soon be no more work. Fortunately work of a new sort came a little at a time. As I became a director of Bralorne and president of its American subsidiaries I had to take on more administrative work, and success of these operations made others want to employ me to help direct policy and value mines. INTRODUCTION Sublevel long-hole stoping is a large tonnage stoping method that may be used when there is a fairly com¬petent straight vein and the walls will stand with little support. It is a method that lends itself to a high degree of mechanization. Two variations of the method are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 1 illustrates development typical for a 3-m (10-ft) wide vein. Initial development is by a lower haulageway, which may be either track or trackless. A two-compartment raise is driven in the footwall of the vein. At about 12 m (40 ft) above the main head¬ing, a footwall scram is driven and pockets through the vein are cut on 7.6-m (25-ft) centers. Each of the sub¬level blocks selected in this example is 45.7 m (150 ft) long by 12 m (40 ft) high. Stoping starts at the slot raises at stope endlines and retreats to the timbered raise. This retreat sequence starts on the lowest sublevel and the opening cut is blasted into the slot raise. This retreating system is used in order to provide a good safe back over the miners working in any given sublevel. A crawler-mounted down-the-hole or conventional pneumatic drill puts the holes down from one sublevel to the next on any desired drill pattern. Gravity flow brings the broken ore down to the scram level. The illustration shows a large slusher mounted at the timbered raise and slushing from the pockets back to the raise chute. Development of the ore block in Fig. 2 is typical for a 5.5-m (18-ft) wide vein. Initial development is by a trackless heading driven in the footwall of the vein. Pockets are then put into and through the vein on 7.6-m (25-ft) centers. For ease in using trackless rubber tired mucking equipment, these pockets are crosscut to the vein at approximately 1.04 rad (60°) rather than per¬pendicular. A two-compartment timbered raise is driven down from one level to the next. Endline slot raises are again put through from level to level. Each of the sub¬level blocks selected in this example is 40-m (130 ft) long by 33.5 m (110 ft) high. Stoping starts at the slot raises and retreats back to the timbered raise. Long holes are drilled from one sub¬level down to the next by starting between the lowest pair of sublevels and then working up the ore block. Mucking out of the pocket drawpoints is accomplished by rubber-tired load-haul-dump (LHD) units which then dump into a centrally located orepass.

This chapter will summarize some of the important applications in the geotechnical (pit slope, spoil pile and tailings stability, and hydrology), the environmental (including reclamation), and equipment selection and analysis areas. Virtually all aspects discussed are applicable both for planning of new mines and for evaluating existing operations. Probably the most influential item which has affected the areas discussed in this chapter and possibly most areas discussed in this book is and will continue to be, in the next decade, the myriad federal and state environmental, safety, and reclamation regulations affecting new mine development and continued operation of existing properties. Computer applications have been and will continue to be instrumental in assisting in planning to meet the challenges of the requirements dictated by these regulations.

The 1997 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas, NV. The RETC is a biennial event jointly sponsored by SME and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Conference attendance was 573 members, nonmembers and students, an increase of seven attendees from the 1995 conference in San Francisco, CA. Exhibitors occupied 51 booths at the Las Vegas RETC. The 1997 conference encompassed 58 presentations in 15 sessions. Participants were given details on achievements and advances that have resulted in new design solutions, alternative work practices and increased productivity within the industry. The page at the end of this article tells how to get your copy of the RETC proceedings, either hardbound or on CD-ROM. Or, if you wish, for the first time a CD-ROM is available with the complete RETC proceedings from 1972 to 1997. This two-disk, archival volume has key-word search capability, is in portable file format and is compatible with PC and Macintosh platforms. RETC program sessions included design and planning, ground support, tunnel boring machine (TBM) case histories, conventional excavation, new technology, difficult ground, geotechnical, shafts and raises, future/special projects, new Austrian tunneling method, international projects, soft ground case histories and water and gas. Major scientific discoveries cannot be programmed. New or frontier technology, however, can and should be planned. It is the vital force underlying the business strategy of a vigorous and profitable mining and metals company. Generally, a radical departure from existing technology is required to 1) Enhance the competitive value of ore reserves, i.e., to turn low grade or marginal reserves into competitive reserves. 2) To increase yield and decrease costs. 3) To decrease investment. 4) To increase mine life. 5) To improve product quality to meet market demands. The very definition of frontier technology implies that it is so different that the old plant, if already in use, will not be directly suitable to use the new technology. Therefore, a priori, we know that the commercialization of frontier technology would very likely involve new investment. The recommended technique of economic and technical analyses, I propose to call "Success Analysis.'' Simply stated, it forces us, by step- by-step procedure, to ask "what is needed to succeed in this particular project." Therefore, the first step is to identify what is meant by "success." The definition of "success" requires an agreement with top management or sponsors of the project as to what constitutes "success" in their minds as contrast to the technical people perception of "success." In general, top management would define success as meeting: 1) The technical objectives, i.e., technology being developed would produce the desired product at the acceptable quality. 2) Financial objectives, i.e., when commercialized, the project's capital cost, operating costs and return on investment are better than the projects they would normally fund. The return has to be better because new technology is inherently riskier. 3) Marketing objectives in that the project will produce product of acceptable quality in timely manner, i.e., scale-up to commercial plant would not cause undue delays in start-up and that large fix-up expenditure would not be required to protect the projected return on the investment. Many projects are started in the laboratory to develop "Frontier Technology" in mineral processing. Most of these efforts are never commercialized. There are many causes of these failures. The major causes are listed below: 1) Inadequate communication with the sponsors of the project so that project objectives are defined and agreed to by all. 2) Ill-defined technical problems. 3) Incomplete development of technology. This has two major components: a. Incorrect scale-up and engineering. b. Inadequate start-up and maintenance planning. 4) Incomplete and over-optimistic process economics. 5) Lack of understanding of the future behavior of the marketplace. 6) Failure to complete R&D effort by the time it is needed. 7) Incorrect projections of human resources required; that is, technical, managerial and operating. 8) Lack of realistic forecast of the expenditures required for commercialization of the R&D effort. These pitfalls can be avoided by comprehensive planning and the use of success analysis technique. The major elements in "Success Analysis" are: 1) Identification of the "need" for new technology. 2) Unbiased and complete scale-up engineering. 3) Acceptable economic feasibility with enough margin of error in the sale prices and operating costs to justify the inherent risks in frontier technology. 4) Timing for availability of investment capital and markets. Many failures in the development of frontier technology are preordained because the initial selection of the research project has been without adequate attention to the needs of the industry. Many very innovative hydrometallurgical processes for recovery of copper from concentrates were developed in the past twenty years. They have not adapted except to a very minor extent because they did not satisfy the success analysis criteria. As the search for minerals leads to deeper mines the need to control water inflow into mine shafts and mine workings will grow. As shal¬lower more readily available minerals are exploited, ore bodies which were previously uneconomic be cause of their depth will now become attractive targets. In known mining districts new ore bodies are being discovered down dip of existing ones. In the west many metal deposits are being developed in rocks of the mountain front pediments, frequently covered by several hundred feet of saturated alluvium. Greater depth often means that workings are developed well below existing water tables, creating high hydrostatic heads adjacent to mine workings. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the methods available for determining if water control will be necessary and to present some of the techniques for locating water bearing zones and the amount of water to be expected. The paper will concentrate on problems associated with water control in mine shaft development, although many of the exploratory techniques are similar to those needed for assessing overall mine water inflow problems. A brief case history on water control problems in mine shafts in the Grants mineral belt of northwestern New Mexico is presented. Water control during shaft sinking presents some unique features. First, the problem is a relatively short term one, since water control is often necessary only while the shaft is being sunk. Control measures may be necessary only while the shaft is open into the water bearing zone and the lining installed and cemented. Secondly, limited working space within the shaft area presents difficulties in handling large amounts of water inflow. The presence of water in the shaft working area increases sinking time and the potential hazard to miners. Finally, there is the economics of shaft sinking. While the shaft is being sunk no ore is being produced and there is every incentive to minimize costs.

The rapidly expanding, globally based mining industry provides many opportunities and challenges for the engineering construction business. This paper reviews some of the innovations that the industry is implementing to provide increased value in the design, construction, and successful start-up of new mine plant facilities. Approaches being taken to reduce installed-plant costs as well as related value-enhancement opportunities are discussed. Included are comments on new technology developments, use of automation and global communications networks, application of economic models as a project design tool, and management approaches being adopted to make the engineering construction process significantly more effective.

During the last decade grassroots minerals education programs have blossomed throughout the United States and in other countries. At the same time an environmental education movement has been gaining momentum. While this offers a unique opportunity to share the mining industry’s story, it also has some potential pitfalls. In this paper the authors will discuss some of the benefits of participating in environmental education and provide some practical tips for success, based on New Mexico experiences. It will conclude with a presentation on a successful environmental education program at Heights Middle School in Farmington New Mexico.

The paper presents a new method for boring of blind inclined shafts. The machine, called BorPak, developed by The Robbins Company, operates similar to a mini TBM. It is a remote operated, self propelled drilling machine mounted on a crawler for high mobility and launched out of a starting tube for quick collaring. A short history of the operation of the prototype in Scandinavia and Canada is included in the paper. The BorPak is capable of boring raises at angles from 30° to 900 from horizontal in sizes ranging from 1.2m-2m diameter without the use of drill pipe. The BorPak represents an innovative tool for improved performance, reduced costs and creating a safer working environment.

The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. This paper summarizes the benefits ofusing an in-situ analyzer in a sampling and valuation program. The tests and studies cited quantify the problems associated with current conventional sampling techniques and contrast conventionally-obtained results with those obtained through in-situ analysis. Data are presented to show the improved precision in valuation resulting from the in-situ method. Greater precision in estimating the mineral content of unmined ground becomes increasingly important as mines strive for optimum exploitation of their deposits. As the following analysis shows, the variable distribution of minerals within a deposit, along with the difficulty and the cost of high density sampling limits the precision which is currently possible in practice. An inherent problem exists in the conventional method of sampling. The erratic values of ore grade necessitate the collection oflarge numbers of samples for statistically accurate valuation and ore reserve estimation. Owing to the cost of manpower, current sampling techniques do not allow for the collection of sufficiently large numbers of samples. The most common method of sampFng in current practice is chip sampling, although bulk sampling is sometimes used. The intent of sampling is to obtain an estimate of the value of blocks of ground prior to mining. This information is used to plan the rate and sequence of mining, yet the sampling intervals which are possible in practice cause these block estimations to be ubject to considerable uncertainty. This inevitably leads to mcorrect mining decisions which may be vy costly.

New methods of reducing stopping leakage have been investigated by Mine Safety Appliance Research Corporation, working under contract to the U. S. Bureau of Mines. It was found that proper construction techniques are far more important in reducing leakage than the type of sealant used, provided the sealant has sufficient adhesion and strength. Leakage could also be substantially reduced by brushing on modified mortar sealants rather than using the accepted method of trowelling them on.
