One way of increasing conveyor systems productivity is by monitoring the key parameters in the systems. In this paper, a new line of smart bearings will be presented and discussed. The new bearings are capable of monitoring temperature, vibrations, and belt speed for early detection of potentially serious problems. The new smart bearings have built in sensors that are carefully integrated and protected for long life service. These bearings are going to be the key to increasing the up time of belt conveyors in the future.

"Mine face ignition due to a high levels of methane is one of the most common fire incidents in underground coal mines. This work exams ignition scenarios in continuous miner headings. Depending on the magnitude of the ignition or resulting fire, the ventilation curtain in the continuous miner (CM) heading may be damaged or dislodged, affecting the ventilation into the area. A computational study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of damage to the ventilation curtain on the ventilation flow into the CM area. The computational fluid dynamics software Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), Version 6.0 was used to predict the conditions that develop due to a 200 kW fire in the coal mine face following a methane ignition with different levels of curtain damage. Smoke layer depth, temperatures and mass flow into the CM area were used to evaluate the impact of no damage to the curtain, partially dislodged curtain, and fully removed of the curtain. Partial removal of the curtain allowed more smoke to accumulate in the CM area and a reduction in ventilation into the CM area. With full removal of the curtain, the smoke accumulated through the entire depth of the CM area and flowed out the entrance to the CM area and the ventilation completely bypassed the region. INTRODUCTION Active working faces in underground coal mines are one the most hazardous locations in terms of fire events. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data analysis, the highest number of non-fatal fire incidents was reported at mining faces, intersections and crosscut areas in comparison with other locations from 2000 to 2012. About 464 fires happened at active working faces from 2000 to 2012, most consisting of a methane ignition, in some cases followed by localized fire. These are high risk incidents due to the potential to raise float dust and damage ventilation systems, particularly auxiliary systems such as curtain or tubing. Depending on the magnitude of the ignition or fire, the ventilation curtain in the continuous miner (CM) area may be damaged or dislodged, affecting the ventilation into the area. Five computational fluid dynamics (CFD) scenarios were considered to investigate the smoke layer depth, temperature, visibility, mass flow rate, and the behavior of airflow in an entry with a continuous miner (CM) located in it. The state of the auxiliary ventilation was varied based on the assumption that as an ignition increases it magnitude it will affect ventilation curtain proportionally. Visibility and temperature along the height of the entry at different sections were investigated and the interface height at each section was determined. Also, the fresh air height was studied for tenability analysis in future. FDS, Version 6.0 was used to predict the conditions that develop due to a 200 kW fire on the coal mine face following a methane ignition with different levels of curtain damage. Smoke view software was used as the post processor to visualize and analyze methane fire behavior at the face. Most entry fires are reported as fuel-controlled fires as they are rarely restricted to air access (Ingason et al, 2014). The working face fire in the following models was assumed to be a fuel-controlled fire."

Evaluation of acid drainage risk from spent (leached) ore in arid climatic zones consists of two components: (1) whether residual and secondary minerals will release acid and metals when exposed to rainfall, and (2) whether ambient rainfall is likely to infiltrate, and eventually impact surface or ground water resources. The risk of acid drainage from spent ore at the El Abra on-off copper leach pad operation was evaluated using conventional geochemical methods and unsaturated flow models. Although geochemical testing indicated poor quality water would result from any seepage, unsaturated flow modeling demonstrated that infiltration and seepage were unlikely given the arid climatic conditions. Modeling further demonstrated that the residual moisture content of the spent ore when it is removed from the leach pad controls the risk of seepage. To further reduce the risk of seepage, operational controls were developed and implemented at the El Abra site.

"This paper presents the results of a comprehensive study conducted by CONSOL Energy, Marcellus Shale Coalition, and Pennsylvania Coal Association to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations on the mechanical integrity of shale gas wells drilled over a longwall abutment pillar. The primary objective is to demonstrate that a properly constructed gas well in a standard longwall abutment pillar can maintain mechanical integrity during and after mining operations. A study site was selected over a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine, which extracts 1,500-ft-wide longwall faces under about 600 feet of cover. Four test wells and four monitoring wells were drilled and installed over a 125-ft by 275-ft centers abutment pillar. In addition to the test wells and monitoring wells, surface subsidence measurements and underground coal pillar pressure measurements were conducted as the 1,500-ft-wide longwall panels on the south and north sides of the abutment pillar were mined by. To evaluate the resulting coal protection casing profile and lateral displacement, three separate 60-arm caliper surveys were conducted. Prior to the longwall panels being mined by, a number of 3D finite element simulations were conducted to estimate subsidence at the surface, coal pillar pressure increases, the resulting coal protection casing profile and displacement, and the vertical and horizontal displacements in the four monitoring wells. Comparisons of the pre-mining 3D finite element simulation results and the surface/subsurface/underground instrumentation results show that the measured test well and IPI casing deformations and profiles are in reasonable agreement with those predicted by the 3D finite element models, and that the measured surface subsidence and pillar pressure are in excellent agreement with those predicted by the 3D models, which serves to validate the 3D finite element models. Parametric studies employing the validated 3D finite element models demonstrate that larger coal protection casing thickness is expected to have little effect on the lateral deformation, although it may reduce the magnitude of casing plastic deformation, and under deeper cover (~1,100 feet), lateral casing deformation is expected to be smaller, although larger plastic casing deformation may be present near the seam level. Also, evaluation of various casing and cementing designs using the validated 3D models clearly indicates that, when all casings are grouted to the surface except the intermediate and production casings, the intermediate and production casings show little deformation and no plastic strain. This research represents a very important step and initiative to utilize the knowledge and science obtained from mining research to improve miner and public safety as well as the safety and health of the oil and gas industries"

This paper describes some recent work on the identification and development of new chemical reagents aimed at improving the industrial processing of phosphate ores by froth flotation. In particular, three chemical product families which will be discussed appear to offer enhanced flexibility by: 1) utilizing a small amount of a silica control reagent which can significantly reduce the amount of anionic (carboxylic) collector required for a given P2O5 recovery level; 2) utilizing a new anionic collector family which offers high P2O5 recovery and selectivity versus standard carboxylic collectors; and 3) utilizing another new anionic collector family which has, in some tests, allowed for selective removal of dolomite from apatite. Examples and use characteristics of each of these new chemical ideas will be presented.

In the course of the grinding experiments conducted at Climax over the past twenty years one interesting phenomenon was discovered. This was that balls made of certain types of steel grind more ore than some others. The most significant variation was found in the results secured with a hard alloyed forged bail compared with the forged carbon ball supplied by most ball manufacturers These findings were confirmed in many repeated controlled tests. The value of these tests depends on the methods used, the facilities available and the care with which the investigations were conducted. These are described in the following. This testing has largely been done in eight 91 x 81 low discharge ball mills in closed circuit with 7811 duplex screw classifiers. The mills run at 20 RPM on a feed approximately minus 3/8 inch. The ore is ground through 28 - 35 mesh in one stage. Each mill and auxiliary classifier is in a separate, parallel grinding and flotation section The, ore to each: section is the same in every particular and is fed to each mill bin from a common conveyor tripper. The ore from the bin to the ball mill is weighed on a conveyor scale. The power input to each mill motor is determined with a watt hour meter which measures the power to the mill motor only. Both the scales and meters are checked periodically by standard methods and have been found to give consistent readings. Automatic samplers are employed on each section to obtain accurate measurement of the size reduction. A size analysis of the classifier overflow is made each shift and a composite size analysis is obtained from a weighted average of the various shift analyses. The mills are driven by 450 horsepower synchronous motors so that there is no speed variation and shell liner age is kept as nearly the same as possible in mills under test. The same set of operators is assigned to a mill under test as to the control mill. In all other particulars such as ball load, mill density, liner design, etc., the mills are operated in precisely the same manner. This is an ideal arrangement for plant testing. From observations of ball mill performance over the past twenty years, it is the opinion of the operating staff that variations of as little as one to two percent in mill capacities may be determined if sufficient operating hours are devoted, to a test. Relations between mill capacities, fineness of grinds and power consumptions have been established with a high degree of accuracy. In Table I are given the figures for one test. These show that while the grind with the hard ball was slightly coarser, the tons ground per hour was 5.4 percent greater with the soft ball, and 6.1 percent greater on the basis of minus 100 mesh produced. The power consumed per ton with the hard ball was 4.4 percent greater on a tons per hour basis. The soft ball was inferior in wearing qualities and steel consumption per ton of ore was 24 percent greater with it. In this test the mills were charged with the two different balls for a period of three months to allow the ball loads to come to equilibrium. In Table II are given the specifications of the two balls. The difference in grinding rates may be accounted for by the nature of the ball surfaces. The surfaces of the soft balls after being worn a while are rougher to the touch. Enlarged photographs of the worn-in surfaces of hard and soft balls are shown in Figure I. These show the presence of scratches or skid marks on the hard ball surface which indicates less nipping effect. The Climax ore pulp has a pH of 6.0 and is in a dispersed state. The viscosity is low compared with most ores especially those that are conditioned with lime. This would lower the tendency of the pulp to adhere to the balls with a lower grinding efficiency as a result. It was also thought that the relative rates of wear from surface to center might affect the make-up of an equilibrium ball charge. This probably has little effect on capacity as shown by the size analyses of the two ball charges in Table III. This hypothesis was subsequently investigated by the use of rationed charges. Nevada is primarily known today for its nation-leading production of gold and silver. However, industrial mineral production continues to play an important role in providing construction materials to help make the state the fastest growing in the United States. Aggregate production in Nevada was about 20 million tons in 1991. Most of that was used in construction in the fast-growing Las Vegas area. The state leads the nation in the production of barite and mined magnesite and has significant production of lithium carbonate, diatomite and gypsum. Other industrial minerals produced in the state include specialty clays, silica, lime and dolomite and relatively small production in salt, perlite and dimension stone. Industrial minerals operations are subject to state and federal permitting requirements, especially in the areas of air and water quality and mined land reclamation. As in all segments of the mineral producing industries throughout the nation, the amount and complexity of regulations affecting industrial minerals has increased significantly in recent years. Nevada is no exception.

This paper will discuss bentonite deposits in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The discussion will be re¬stricted to a review of the so-called calcium or non-swelling bentonites. In other words the exchangeable cation is calcium. The term "bentonite" is used to describe a clay material, composed essentially of the clay mineral montmorillonite. In addition, bentonites may contain various impurities such as glass shards, feldspar, quartz, muscovite and biotite mica, glauconite, pyrite, hydrated iron oxide, gypsum, organic material, etc, Most of the southern calcium bentonites contain at least 70% montmorillonite, Bentonite as mined may range in color from dark grayish greens through various shades of grays, reds, yellows and browns to nearly white. It is normally massive and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. When air dried, closely spaced shrinkage fractures occur. Moist bentonite has a soapy feel, with little or no obvious "grit". Bentonite deposits were first discovered in Mississippi about 1925, in southern Monroe County. During the thirties and early 1940's, deposits were identified in Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Perhaps the earliest production of southern bentonite was from a deposit in the valley of the Tombigdee River, south of Jackson, Alabama in 1936. Production commenced in Mississippi during the latter part of 1938 at Pontotoc. The growth and development of the bentonite industry in the southern United States owes its beginning to three events. Western mining companies are entering an African critical minerals market where access is harder to secure, risk is being priced more sharply, and execution advantages are increasingly decisive. The continent holds significant reserves and production potential of cobalt, lithium, copper, graphite, manganese and rare earths critical to the energy transition, yet Chinese-aligned capital has built a structural edge in access and execution speed. Simply signing narrow offtake agreements to buy output is no longer sufficient. Western firms win when they convert quality orebodies into bankable projects by reducing aboveground risk faster than competitors through integrated infrastructure access, durable fiscal alignment, and credible local value creation. Western mining companies will break into Africa by pairing capital with partnership, building corridors enabling infrastructure and power, designing credible value addition pathways and operating in a way that is politically durable through transparency, community benefit and fiscal terms that share upside in commodity upcycles. This feature article offers a practical playbook for mining executives and investors. The core argument is straightforward. Winning in Africa requires competing on the full system around the mine. Corridors and power, processing pathways, contract durability, community benefit and regulatory execution are now decisive variables in project valuation and capital access.

"Acid mine drainage (AMD) has become a serious environmental problem in the mining industry in the last decade. Many efforts have been made in an attempt to find a better method to manage this problem in a proper manner, both through prevention and mitigation. One of the methods to prevent AMD generation is a dry dump cover system that has been proposed to minimize oxidation of sulphide waste rock in dumping sites. The performance of this system depends on the physical and geochemical stability of a barrier layer to minimize water and oxygen influx. In the mining industry, this barrier layer is formed by using Inert/Non Acid Forming (NAF) waste rocks to cover Potentially Acid Forming (PAF) underneath. However, the availability of NAF waste rocks, due to the geological condition, mining sequence and capability of equipment, is limited in some mines. This paper will discuss the acid generation mechanism, application of a cover system and its problem being faced in an Indonesian coal mine, and describe a preliminary laboratory result of a multi layer cover system in an attempt to overcome this problem."

INTRODUCTION The Scope of the Chapter This chapter discusses environmental regulation and closely-related public policies associated with mineral development in the United States. This chapter outlines the nature, extent, and amelioration of secondary effects of mineral development. It sketches the policy foundations of regulation; discusses the implementation of environmental law; describes land use conflicts and land management regimes; and surveys the costs and benefits of environmental regulation. Since regulations are subject to frequent change, the chapter emphasizes basic factual and conceptual material, rather than specific regulations. The goal is to familiarize the reader with the general nature of environmental impacts and mitigation which arise in the minerals industry, and with the issues surrounding the regulation debate. The chapter is organized as a series of sub- chapters. The first of these is a discussion of the conceptual foundations of regulatory policy. The second section summarizes the principal federal environmental statutes, and the implementation of such regulation. Following that, the third section summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the types of environmental impacts associated with mineral development. This discussion, organized in a format similar to that used in environmental impact statements, can be thought of as a guide to reading and understanding such statements. Next, the fourth section surveys studies of the costs and benefits of environmental regulation. 'These empirical studies are evaluated in terms of the framework developed in the first section of the chapter. In the fifth section, the discussion turns to federal, state, and local approaches to land use control and siting, and the economic analysis of such conflicts. Included are discussions of the two principal forms of public lands mineral entry, the 1872 location patent system and the 1920 leasing approach. CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS OF REGULATORY POLICY David A. In a market society, the private sector is presumed to be the most appropriate economic agent. Environmental and related regulation occurs because the public believes the free market does not properly value environ- mental quality. In this section, concepts are advanced to aid the reader in understanding the government's role in this respect.

The cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis are located side by side on a double loop in the Mississippi River near the eastern boundary of Minnesota. Both cities lie on both sides 'of the Mississippi River, which in this region describes an S-shaped curve. The two cities together have a population of over 600,000 people, gathered in an area which has grown to be a single urban district inasmuch as the two cities have expanded until they occupy all the territory formerly between them, though the business centers are ten miles apart. St. Paul is located at the head of navigation on the Mississippi River and Minneapolis, farther upstream, at the Falls of St. Anthony. A recent water¬power development below the Falls of St. Anthony, constructed by the Federal Government, has at the same time made possible navigation to the foot of St. Anthony Falls through a lock around the dam which replaces the former rapids. Minneapolis, in 1920, had a population of 380,000 people, and St. Paul, 235,000. The two cities occupy land at an elevation of 700 to 900 feet above sea level. The average elevation is slightly less at St. Paul. Minneapolis has nearly 4,000 acres of parks and park¬ways, while St. Paul has nearly 2,000.

P. T. Pacific Nikkel Indonesia (PTPNI) was incorporated in Jakarta, Indonesia in February, 1969 by a group of Dutch and North American companies. At the same time, a Contract of Work with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia was signed, granting Pacific Nikkel all the necessary licenses and permits to explore and develop all nonradioactive minerals in two separate areas in Irian Jaya, eastern Indonesia. Nickel mineralization occurrences were confirmed by Dutch geologists in the two areas in 1952 and 1955, however, detailed exploration began in June 1969 after the Contract of Work was signed. Since that time, numerous studies and investigations have been conducted to determine the feasibility of producing metallic nickel in Irian Jaya. Four engineering studies, two bulk sample tests, an oceanographic survey, and a preliminary site investigation indicated that construction and operation of a nominal 100 million pounds per year metallic nickel plant on Gag Island were technically feasible. The fourfold increase in the price of oil in late 1973 without a corresponding adjustment in the price of nickel necessitated a reevaluation of the project, the results of which showed that the project required other conditions to be viable. Subsequently, analysis of: the future projected nickel supply-demand and cost-price relationships, the economics of treating a higher grade feed, and participation by the Government of Indonesia, indicate that the project will be viable. Therefore, planning of the Gag Island Nickel Laterite Project is continuing with the objective of commencing production to supply the market in the 1983-1984 time period.

An investigation of a hydrometallurgical method for the recovery of tellurium dioxide from cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film manufacturing scrap was conducted. Sulfuric acid/ hydrogen peroxide lixiviation was employed to selectively leach cadmium and oxidize tellurium to tellurium dioxide (TeO2). Experimental variables included solution pH, pulp density, oxidant (H2O2) concentration, temperature, agitation rate and residence time. After one hour of lixiviation, no noticeable increase in grade or recovery occurred; thus, all experiments were performed for one hour. Leaching results showed it was possible to recover at least 74% of the tellurium, while producing a 98% pure TeO2 product. Additionally, an apparent activation energy value of 12.1 kJ/mole (2.9 kcal/mole) was determined. This value, along with results from agitation rate experiments, indicated the reaction was primarily controlled by diffusion through the product layer. During lixiviation, partial dissolution of tellurium proved inevitable. Thus, a second step: ammoniacal precipitation was introduced to recover the aqueous tellurium as a precipitate. A statistical experimental design (DOE) was used to identify the significant effects from the residual effects. Experimental variables included precipitation pH, temperature, initial tellurium tenor and agitation rate. Precipitation results showed that it was possible to produce a low-grade (46% Te) precipitate, while recovering 98% of the aqueous tellurium species. The precipitation pH and temperature (°C) were determined as the significant effects for both the grade and recovery of tellurium. Agitation rate and initial tellurium tenor were determined as the residual effects and did not influence the grade or recovery of tellurium. An illustration of tellurium recovery, as a function of the significant effects, is illustrated in Fig. 1.

Sometimes in assessing where we are and where we are going it is informative to take a look at where we have been. Whether or not it adds to our understanding of the present, I think it may be interesting to review some of the past history of our industry. As a starting point I chose to use the famous Paley Commission Report, formally known as "The U. S. President's materials Policy Commission -Resources for Freedom."(l) The Paley Commission report said "Fluorspar is an essential raw material for the steel, aluminum, and chemical industries." Of course this statement is still true. It also said, "United States known reserves of fluorspar would be sufficient for some 15 years at present rates of consumption--about 426 000 short tons in 1960. Projected consumption for 1975, however, is several times as great, and reserves in other free countries do not appear adequate to supply United States deficiencies during the next 25 years." This simply demonstrates how even the most learned and competent people can observe all the facts avail-able to them at a given time and yet be unable to predict the future very accurately. We all know that reserves in other countries are more than adequate to supply the United States today, 25 years since the report was published. In fact, the report estimated free-world reserves at something over 36 million tonnes (40 million short tons). Contrast this with 246 million tonnes (271 million short tons) estimated as total world reserves from the section on fluorspar from Commodity Data Summaries of 1974, published by the Department of the Interior. (2) The Paley Report discusses other matters pertaining to fluorspar that are still of interest, such as improving mining methods. Furthermore, it certainly did a good forecasting job in noting that greater recycling should become possible in the aluminum industry in regard to fluorine lost in wastes and also concerning the substitution of fluorspar in the steel industry by other fluxing materials. It also suggested that non-fluorine containing propellants should be investigated as a replacement of those containing fluorine as a conservation matter. Some discussion was devoted to recovering the fluorine content of phosphate rock, which is being practiced today, but was in its infancy in 1950.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical engineers play a major role in tunnel design primarily because tunnels are constructed entirely within the ground. In general, this role can be divided into two major tasks: subsurface investigations and project design. Under subsurface investigations, it is necessary for the geotechnical engineer to accurately describe the ground in which the project will be built. Under project design, it is necessary for the geotechnical engineer to work together with other members of the design team to make certain that the tunnel fulfills its intended purpose at least cost. Given in the paper are the authors' opinions about what constitutes an adequate scope of services for these two tasks on a tunneling project. SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS o Background Study All subsurface exploration programs for tunnels begin with a thorough investigation of background information about the proposed site. Such background information includes geologic, reports topographic maps, aerial photography, and case history reports of other nearby tunnels. Once completed, it is necessary to study the background information so that the proper scope and magnitude of subsurface exploration work is performed in a manner that provides maximum input to a knowledge of those intact and rock mass properties that are important for an understanding of the entire ground mass. There are many different machine design parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of speeds. mining operations will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates that result in non optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency with two operating modes. Overall, the results match the theory, and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, when operated at full capacity, with an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. Using a fixed feed rate, the crushers had 4-14% higher production when operating at the optimal speed. Secondary analysis showed that the power draw consistency and magnitude of power spikes could also be improved by optimizing the cone speed. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive, more energy efficient, impove process control and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine

Measuring the specific gravity of a pulp in concentrating plants is a relative, y simple procedure, but the desired accuracy is often difficult to attain. Many plants use the system of weighing a known volume of the pulp on a scale. In many cases, this method is quite accurate, but obtaining a true sample presents quite a problem. This is especially true when the pulp tends to froth, the solids settle rapidly, or the flow is fast at the point of sampling. There is also the problem of the operator neglecting to take the sample because of duties elsewhere, or, if everything Is apparently running smoothly, he assumes the pulp density is also all right. In 1952, the Pine Creek plant of Union Carbide Nuclear Company began working on a better method for measuring and controlling pulp density. After an extensive investigation of different methods for measuring the specific gravity of moving pulps, the Research Department decided that the bubble tube method appeared to be the simplest and most promising for our applications. It consists of two bubble tubes, of different lengths, submersed in a pulp. Low pressure air is supplied to, the two tubes through sight bubblers to maintain approximately equal volume of air to each bubble tube. The bubble tubes are also connected to a differential manometer, one to each side. Therefore, knowing the vertical distance between the outlets of the bubble tubes, the manometere can be calibrated to measure directly the specific gravity of the pulp. During the past 20 years, methods of multivariate statistical analysis have been developed on mainframe computers for the integration of geological, geophysical, geochemical and LANDSAT data in mineral resource appraisal. At present, it is becoming increasingly feasible to perform mathematical image analysis of digitized patterns on microcomputers. This has led us to develop a new method of statistical pattern integration for mineral exploration. In this paper, the new method is used to outline, by means of posterior probabilities, exploration targets within small areas of which the prior probabilities for occurrence of new mineral deposits had been estimated by multivariate analysis.

The pneumatic jackleg drill remains a widely used tool in development and production drilling in many small-scale and narrow-vein underground mining operations in North America. Several drawbacks of this technology (unsatisfactory drilling rate, noise, vibration, presence of oil mist, etc.) and the successful introduction of water-powered jackleg drills in South Africa have stimulated the interest of many mine operators. The performance of both drill types have been tested in a mine site in Northwestern Quebec, Canada. Results of the testing of penetration and advance rates as well as environmental aspects are presented. They show a superiority of water-powered drills, even though the difference in performance is less significant than that reported from South Africa. Further research avenues are proposed to better evaluate the potential of water drilling technology in North American metal mines.
