The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s(NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), RAG Pennsylvania and Strata Control Technologies of Australia have collaborated to conduct an extensive study of roof bolt strata interaction at the Emerald mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The primary goal of the project was to obtain detailed data on the interaction between the mine roof and the support elements for use in modeling studies. The study site was a longwall tailgate subjected to high horizontal stress. Three arrays of instruments were installed at the site, one in the tail-gate entry and two in an adjacent crosscut. Pumpable concrete cribs were present in the tailgate array, and cable bolts were installed in one of the crosscut arrays. The instruments included mechanical and sonic extensometers for measuring roof movement, instrumented roof bolts, and three-dimensional roof stress cells. The study was ultimately successful in determining the magnitude of the horizontal stress concentration, the height of roof failure and the roof failure sequence, and the loading history of the primary roof supports.

Substantial priming was a considered necessity for proper initiation of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixes as ANFO began to carve its niche in the mining industry in the latter fifties. Heavy priming accompanied the introduction of prills and oil to many blasting operations, large charges of high explosives were commonly used at the bottom, top and frequent intervals through-out the column. As the quality of ammonium nitrate improved and operators became more experienced, primer costs began to diminish. Increased experimentation continued with reduced primer costs a main objective. Cast primers were introduced and became accepted as an excellent companion for ANFO. Although the trend toward larger diameter boreholes became increasingly popular, emphasis on lower and lower priming costs continued. A primer was simply required to produce any type of initiation within the ANFO column to be considered adequate. Suddenly ANFO priming had digressed from excessive to marginal. Early experimental data developed at "test site" and laboratory locations indicated that ANFO had a tendency to react inefficiently in the initiation region of the column unless substantially primed. This was evidenced by the presence of unstable reaction rates detected with newly developed detonation velocity measuring equipment. History of the feldspar industry in the United States has been summarized by DuBois (I)*. The earliest production of feldspar in the United States is reported to have been from Mitchell County, North Carolina, about 1744, with the product shipped to England, In about 1825 several pegmatites were worked to a limited extent in Connecticut, with the production shipped to England. The first feldspar grinding facility was constructed about 1850 in Connecticut, with chaser mills used. Feldspar has been produced continuously in the United States since about 1870. Feldspar is produced from the following states: North Carolina, California, Georgia, Connecticut, South Carolina, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Virginia, Arizona, and Wyoming. Total United States production for 1969 will amount to approximately 900,000 tons. The most current published figures for world production is 1966, at which time 2,165,000 tons was produced. It is estimated that world production of feldspar for 1969 will amount to 2,410,000 tons. Historically, feldspar has been produced by hand sorting and hand cobbing of coarse block feldspar obtained from the intermediate and wall zones of zoned pegmatites. In the United States the reserve of known block feldspar, recoverable by hand sorting is nearing depletion. More emphasis is now placed on feldspar sources contained in finer grained rocks, especially coarse granites or fine-grained pegmatite and beach, dune, and river sands from which the feldspar is obtained by beneficiation.

A series of tests were run on soil samples collected near the site of a Socorro, NM lead smelter that was abandoned more than 98 years ago. Three 30.5- x 30.5-m (100-X 100-ft) squares provided 13 samples each. As described in Part I (this issue), each sample was divided into seven splits according to particle size. A mineralogical examination of the fine-size fraction of Pb-contaminated soils failed to reveal crystalline Pb compounds. These authors conclude that Pb is present as amorphous phases or is adsorbed on the surfaces of soil particles. Site vegetation contained elevated Pb levels that increased with increasing Pb amounts in the soil. However, the biological absorption coefficient (BAC) indicates that some of the site's Pb is unavailable, or the plants are able to limit their uptake. Of the vegetation tested, rabbit bush showed the greatest increase of Pb levels in its roots, whereas levels in creosote were highest in the foliage. In cactus, the Pb levels varied. The amount of Pb due to dust incorporated in plant tissue is almost negligible compared to the amount absorbed through the plant vascular system.

The clays in Eastern Washington occur in a variety of forms and are extracted for uses in Face Brick, paper coatings, and aggregates. Not in large volumes in comparison to other areas, not even from impressive large mines. However, mans utilization of these clays has progressed from historical clay tablets to the present technically oriented manufactured products of today. White Face Brick, perhaps the whitest produced anywhere is the unique product produced by INTERPACE CORPORATION's Mica Plant from these unusual clays. It is this basic characteristic feature of the clay's in the Mica area that differentiate them from the other clay's in this belt. ORIGIN The significant properties of clay's used in Face Brick are plasticity, fired color, fired strength, dry and fired shrinkage, the PCE or Pyrometeric Cone Equivalent, and extrudability. Testing clay's for these properties is standard laboratory procedure. No two clays are alike, and seldom can one clay be substituted for another. Mica White Clays respond favorable to all these properties, but more especially, the Mica Clays fire to a brilliant white color, from almost the natural state. The geologic history of Eastern Washington is largely conjectural because of the absence of rocks representing segments of geologic time. The oldest rocks in this area are the argillaceous and arenaceous sedimentary rocks which have been slightly metamorphosed. These rocks have been correlated with the Belt Series of the Pre-Cambrian age, although some may be older. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) initiated a program in 1976 to develop and demonstrate an instrument system for on-line continuous measurement of coal properties. The program has focused on the use of Prompt Neutron Activation Analysis (PNAA) for elemental determinations and microwave absorption for moisture determination. One of the major results of the EPRI program is the development of the CONAC (Continuous On-Line Analysis of Coal) instrument, with Science Applications, Inc. (SAI) as the prime contractor and Kennedy Van Saun Corporation as a subcontractor.

The floatability of a typical boron mineral, colemanite (Ca2B6O11.5H2O), is shown to be hindered by the presence of montmorillonite type clay minerals. The clay is found to act in the form of slime coating. The mechanism of slime coating is investigated using pure colemanite and clay and their mixtures with an anionic reagent in a microflotation cell. Adsorption, flotation, solubility, zeta potential and scanning electron microscope studies reveal that slime coating occurs through electrostatic attraction. It is possible to minimize the effect of slime coating either at high surfactant concentration or at high pH values.

You may think long before this talk has been completed that the speaker is belaboring the obvious. Please let me put to rest here and now any doubt which you may have in this regard by assuring you that is precisely my intent, and for a very specific reason. We all profess to know and recognize the obvious, but I am impressed increasingly how often we forget or fail to act upon the obvious. Shortly after starting my first job upon graduation from college, I was asked by my boss to participate in a course on practical communications, particularly as applied to conveying proposals effectively to the client -- be he customer or company president. The concept or philosophy underlying this program was so simple and obvious that in my youthful brashness I saw only a gross waste by the company of e good, solid $1930 in compelling me to take the course. The sequel to this experience occurred about five yews ago when I was directing a 300-man marketing group. At that time I enrolled a dozen of my department heads, and subsequently about a hundred other personnel, in the contemporary version of that sane program. Why? -- because they all knew the obvious, but I could see how imperfectly they were implementing it. Truly, a wide chasm exists all too often in our beliefs on the one hand and our practices on the other.

As one begins to contemplate the organization of a talk with the title "Iron Ore - The Permanent State of Evolution," the main divisions appear to be the past, the present, and the future. But distaste for repetition of the present production achievements, which scarcely need additional description on this occasion, soon leads one to the conclusion that a more appropriate division of the subject is simply the past and the future . . . with emphasis on the future. We are working in the present, but it can only be understood by what has taken place in the years and decades gone by, and/or under what terms we will have to face the future. Evolution is more often thought of as a steady change - but steady change is really the product of revolutions, sometimes making headlines but often unnoticed at the time. With hindsight, we recognize the great importance of the emergence of the Bessemer converter and the open hearth and the vast influence that both have had on steel making and the changing ore demand. In this country we also see schooners opening the era for lake transportation of iron ore from Michigan to Take Erie. Later, steamships haul the ore from the Mesabi Range to the steel centers of the country. In order to take full advantage of the inland seaway, there had to be revolutions in ship design, loading and unloading facilities and channel and lock development. Full scale utilization of the resources of the Mesabi Range, itself, required parallel upheavals such as the development of new production equipment, and substitution of modern forms of energy for horsepower, and, yes, manpower, as well.

Renewed interest in the vast reserves of anthracite coal in eastern Pennsylvania led to the use of a numerical model for simulating the hydrologic effects of constructing an open-pit anthracite mine. The proposed mine would be approximately 1800-m (5900-ft) long, 1000-m (3300-ft) wide, and 300-m (1000-ft) deep. A two-dimensional, finite-difference, ground-water flow model was used to calculate ground-water seepage rates into the proposed mine, to evaluate the effectiveness of various deep-well dewatering systems, to calculate drawdown in adjacent wells and properties, and to estimate the capacity of the water-treatment plant. Site-specific values of pertinent hydrogeologic parameters were used in the simulations.

CURD started producing pellets in 1969, with one two-million ton straight grate plant. In the beginning of April '73, the second unit came on stream with an additional capacity of 3 million TPY of pellets. In January '77, the third unit started, bringing the annual capacity to 8 million TPY. For the present year 3 more units, 3 million each, are expected to begin production. CVRD's experience is given about the use of different binders and additives. Over the years several kinds of pellets have been produced to satisfy the market requirements. General quality information is given regarding each.

This paper describes practical applications of lineal" programming techniques to help in the planning of production, transportation and shipments at different coal mines. The models are being used by Cyprus Coal Company in eastern and western operations to plan coal production, economic dispatching and blending over variable time horizons. In addition, where a preparation plant exists, the models establish the amount of washing required to meet specific coal sales qualities. The emphasis on this paper is on model development and implementation together with a system to track coal flow and qualities, either raw from the mines to the loading facilities 01" processed through a preparation plant.

Polymorphic transformations taking place in grinding processes, of massicot to litharge in PbO system, and of y to a in Fe203 system, were re-investigated. Grinding was carried-on in a steeel rotation mill charged with WC balls, under inert atmosphere. The kinetics of transformation in PbO was established by means of quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. The resulting data fit a modified logistic growth function up to about 75% of transformed volume fraction, when a mixture at steady-state equilibrium is formed. The reasoning for the use of a modified logistic function is discussed. A sigmoidal growth function can be used if resulting data fit also an empirical power relationship between transformed volume fraction and time. However, it lacks the significance expressed by a modified logistic function. Assuming, the loss in magnetism is directly related to the amount of transformation in Fe 203, a quantitative analysis was performed using a magnetic balance method. The results fit only the modified logistic growth function, and transformation proceeds almost to completion. A wide literature survey of the subject is given. Available data from literature is compared with the results of the present study, and is shown also to fit a modified logistic grown function, with surprisingly similar slpes in a linear plot, independently of the material. The instrumentation effect on kinetics parameters, and the establishment of equilibrium mixture values, are discussed.

Introduction Metallurgical accounting practices have been revolutionized over the past 15 years by the introduction of low cost personal computers and easy- to-use spreadsheet software. The Chimney Creek metallurgical accounting system takes full advantage of these advances. Data is provided by a PLC-based process control system, IBM data logging, operator logsheets and assay results from an automatatic plant sampling system. The data is organized and stored in an IBM PS/2 system using Lotus 123 and customized accounting programs to provide a comprehensive information management system. Metallurgical accounting for gold plants should ideally provide information for the following: a) Gold production accounting b) Day-to-day process control and operation c) Metallurgical evaluation and process optimization The Chimney Creek system provides all of these while overcoming specific accounting problems presented by SAG milling a coarse feed, grinding in cyanide and dump leaching run-of-mine material. Process description Gold Fields' Chimney Creek mine is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. Ore is processed by a combination of dump leaching and milling processes. The dump leach operation treats approximately 2.0 million tons per year of low grade ore (0.030 oz/ton). Run-of-mine ore is top dumped in 40 foot high pads. The use of three solution ponds for leaching enables an intermediate solution to be recirculated to the leach pad to reduce the pregnant solution flowrate and increase gold tenor of solution to the carbon-in-column (CIC) recovery circuit. Gold recovery is approximately 65% by this method. The milling process employs a SAG mill-ball mill grinding circuit to treat 900,000 tons per year at an average grade of 0.19 oz/ton. The ore is crushed to minus 12" in a jaw crusher prior to feeding the SAG mill. Cyanide is added to the grinding circuit to start gold dissolution as early as possible. After grinding, leaching of the ore is continued in a unique two-stage counter current decantation circuit 1 with 12 hours of leaching between stages . 85% of the soluble gold is recovered from the first stage thickener overflow in carbon columns (CIC). The second stage underflow is treated in a scavenger carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant. Ultimate gold recovery is over 95%. Loaded carbon from both the dump leaching and milling processes is pressure stripped by hot cyanide solution and gold is recovered from the resulting solution by zinc precipitation. The precipitate is retorted for mercury removal and smelted into bullion. The plant flowsheet appears in Figure 1. Data collection Data for daily metallurgical accounting is obtained from three sources: a) Plant sampling b) Process control system c) Operator logsheets All of the data collection for metallurgical accounting is based around the 12-hour shift operating schedule. Sampling All critical sampling for gold production accounting is performed by automatic samplers (Figure 2). Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampling systems are used for sampling all slurry streams (cyclone overflow, CIP feed and CIP tails). The automatic sampler consists of a pneumatically operated primary sample cutter and a continuous rotary secondary splitter. The cyclone overflow and CIP tails are the most critical samples since these are used to calculate gold into and out of the plant on a shiftly basis. This paper is a presentation of findings based upon an econometric model of the world zinc industry. The model was developed as a simple but useful aid for long-run forecasting and planning purposes. A structure was developed for both simulating real zinc price effects on production and consumption, and for forecasting long-run annual zinc prices and supply/ demand levels. Moreover, a methodology is provided to incorporate the effects of: (1) historic technological advances in zinc supply, and (2) the development of the competitive plastics industry. Finally, reduced form equations are used to generate ex post forecasts to evaluate the model's performance.

"Atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) have been widely used in underground coal mines in the United States for the detection of fire in the belt entry and the monitoring of other ventilation-related parameters such as airflow velocity and methane concentration in specific mine locations. In addition to an AMS being able to detect a mine fire, the AMS data have the potential to provide fire characteristic information such as fire growth — in terms of heat release rate — and exact fire location. Such information is critical in making decisions regarding firefighting strategies, underground personnel evacuation and optimal escape routes. In this study, a methodology was developed to calculate the fire heat release rate using AMS sensor data for carbon monoxide concentration, carbon dioxide concentration and airflow velocity based on the theory of heat and species transfer in ventilation airflow. Full-scale mine fire experiments were then conducted in the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division’s Safety Research Coal Mine using an AMS with different fire sources. Sensor data collected from the experiments were used to calculate the heat release rates of the fires using this methodology. The calculated heat release rate was compared with the value determined from the mass loss rate of the combustible material using a digital load cell. The experimental results show that the heat release rate of a mine fire can be calculated using AMS sensor data with reasonable accuracy.IntroductionFires at different stages generate different gases and smoke toxicity hazards. When fires occur in underground mines, a significant amount of toxic gases and smoke enter the mine ventilation system and are carried throughout the mine ventilation network, increasing the hazard potential for personnel even if far away from the actual fire. Although fires that develop to the point of rapid flame spread pose imminent hazards, fires in their smoldering, pre-flaming stages can also contaminate the mine atmosphere with debilitating levels of smoke and toxic gases.The most important parameter for evaluating the fire hazard in mines is the heat release rate (HRR), which is directly related to the rate at which heat, smoke and toxic gases are produced and transported by the ventilation system and which provides an indication of the time available for escape or firefighting (Babrauskas and Peacock, 1992). The HRR is also an important input parameter to mine fire simulation models."

Commodity currency intrigues most of us because of the problems it offers to solve for the Third and the First Worlds. What problems might be solved, if commodity currency were to be adopted in the Third World? That is really the question we are probing here right now. It would take a while to think through all their subtle consequences of this question, but, off the top, it might well have at least three important impacts. Most important of these to this audience is relief from unfair Third World competition. Second, it might well liberate Third World economies from financial indebtedness to the First World and give them freedom from the liquidity limitations. The third benefit is that it might help relieve World trade tensions. All three benefits are interrelated. We could start our speculations on the application of commodity currency from anyone of these starting points. But let us use the starting point most important to you, unfair competition to the U.S. mining industry. From there we might wind up with some thoughts on things you, yourselves, can do to improve things.

INTRODUCTION In May 1984, The Canadian Pacific Railway awarded to the Joint Venture of Foundation of Canada, Ltd. of Toronto, Atlas Construction Co. of Montreal, and S. A. Healy Co. of Chicago the contract for the construction of 27,000 ft of tunnel starting from the east portal. Selkirk contractors, the Joint Venture of Foundation, Atlas and Healy, which had successfully completed for CPR in 1983 the construction of both portal structures for this tunnel, studied several different alternative proposals before presenting its bid pooling each individual company's technical resources and experiences. (Foundation had just completed in association with other companies a similar tunnel project in British Columbia, and the S. A. Healy Co. could provide its experience of more than 40 miles of tunnels excavated by full face boring machines.) Among the alternatives investigated there was a fully circular tunnel to be excavated by a 30 ft diameter TBM, a full section drill and shoot proposal, and a mixed alternative, the "key hole" proposal, consisting of a TBM driven circular top heading followed by benching to design size. Technical, geological and economical considerations determined the alternative that was eventually proposed to CPR. HISTORICAL NOTES The tunnel construction parallels an existing tunnel through the Selkirk mountains that was excavated in 1885. In order to reduce the grade to 1% on the heavily loaded west bound trains, the new tunnel was at a lower elevation and lengthened to almost 9 miles. GEOTECHNICAL INFORMATION CP Rail site investigations began in 1978. The surface rocks in the tunnel construction area are metamorphosed Cambrian and Pre-Cambrian sediments; the underlying formation contains fine and coarse grained rocks presenting different degrees of metamorphism.
