Boron, estimated to comprise about 0.001 percent of the earth's crust (Fleischer 10), as an element is never found free in nature, although its compounds are found in many localities. the borates are the most important. Sassolite (B(OH)3) and boracite (Mg6C12B1406), non-borates, are-of-minor importance. The crystal structures of most natural borates are still unknown. A classification based solely on the ratio of boron to the total number of cations has been devised (Palache 28). This classification divides the borates into four, sub-groups; anhydrous borates, hydrated borates, borates containing hydroxyl or halogen and compound borates. Only four or five minerals of the hydrated borates group have ever been used commercially. In more recent years, the sodium borates have comprised all but a 'small fraction of all borates used. Borax, the hydrated borate compound, is the most important of all boron compounds. It has been used so long and so often that the layman often confuses borax and boron and, applies the terms synonymously.

The disposal of sludges and other similar industrial wastes is a major problem. Liquid wastes from industrial operations, when treated, produce significant volumes of sludge which are difficult to dispose of, because of the chemical and physical properties of the sludge. In the mining industry sludge is produced from various water treatment operations, in particular mine drainage neutralization. Waste water from coal preparation plants also produces a sludge however the sludge is in fact a slurry containing clays, coal fines and coal impurities. In many areas the disposal of these sludges is producing a serious problem. Mine drainage sludge consists of a variety of hydrous iron oxides, usually ferric oxides, contaminated with other neutralization products such as calcium sulfate. The history of the Australian coal industry is almost as old as the history of Australia after new settlement. The first cargo of coal was exported from Newcastle to India in 1799. Although coal has been mined in Australia for almost two centuries, there are indications that the first coal was processed in 1877 in the New-castle area, nearly a half-century after the first coal processing in Europe. Processing on any significant scale began only in 1944 at the Newcastle Steel Works. In Queensland, however, coal processing did not begin until the second quarter of this century. The well-known dramatic growth of mining and processing of Australian coal since the mid-sixties has primarily been due to the expansion of the export market in Japan and other Asian and European countries. Black coal occurs in most of the major sedimentary basins in Australia. The better known deposits of commercial importance are in Sydney, Bowen, Oakland and Gailiee Basins (Figure 1). Apart from Collie Basin in Western Australia, other coal deposits of the Arckinga Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory and Tasmania Basin, Tasmania, are basically unexploited. Sydney Basin of New South Wales and Bowen Basin of Queensland remain the major producers of black coal in Australia.

The increasing scarcity of bentonite coupled with the potential of improved pellet strength have created a need for understanding the effects of thorough bentonite dispersion in taconite concentrate. It has been known for more than a decade that under certain conditions substantial savings of bentonite are realizable by using thorough mixing of bentonite as compared to poor mixing. Extensive work done by J. O. Zetterstrom l at the Univer¬sity of Minnesota indicated the effect of thorough bentonite mixing in a controlled laboratory testing. Commercial hardware was not available at the time Zetterstrom1 paper was published and not much work was done until R. L. Stone, J. M. Karpinsky2, did work with Muller mixing. Nabush 3 worked with the pugmill principle, and Hoogovens 4 and Robe River 5 used the fluidized bed principle. It was very hard to convince iron ore industries to improve the mixing of Bentonite and taconite for the following reasons: A. The initial capital investment for improved mixing equipment; B. The relatively low bentonite cost a few years back, which was not enough to justify new equip¬ment investment;

On September 13, 1973 MAPCO Inc. leased from Pocahontas Land Corporation an 18,000 acre tract of coal lands in Eastern Kentucky's Martin County (See Figure 1.). In July, 1974 initial run of mine coal shipments commenced and in April, 1976 shipments of a 12,500 BTU, less than 1% sulphur, washed coal was being shipped. Results of exploration demonstrated that large quantities of overburden would have to be moved. MAPCO decided to invest in large surface mining equipment to tackle the job.

"The Safety Pays in Mining web application, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program, helps mines determine the potential costs associated with mining injuries. This web app groups injuries by type, either by the cause of the injury or by the nature of the injury. When the user selects one of over 30 common types of mining injuries, the app provides information on the distribution of costs of workers’ compensation claims for that type of injury. Based on other user inputs, Safety Pays in Mining will estimate the total costs of the selected injuries, including an estimate of additional indirect costs, the estimated impact of total injury costs on mining company profits, and provide some examples of other items (services, equipment) on which companies could spend the savings that result from the prevention of injuries. This paper reviews the Safety Pays in Mining web application by discussing the development of the app, how it is used to show the true costs of mining injuries, and how mines can benefit from using this app. INTRODUCTION Injuries on the job cause pain and suffering. They can also profoundly affect profits and daily operations. In addition to paying direct costs or increased premiums for workers’ compensation insurance, a company might need to pay overtime for other workers to fill an injured worker’s job role, cover training costs for a replacement worker, or divert administrative resources in the wake of an injury. Safety Pays in Mining is a web app that estimates the distribution of these injury costs and assesses the impact that occupational injuries have on a company’s profits. The costs of specific types of occupational injuries in mining are not readily available as mining and insurance companies don’t usually share this information. As a consequence, companies only have cost information based on previous experience with their own employees. Therefore, if a mine never experienced a finger amputation for one of its miners, it would not be aware of the possible costs associated with this type of injury. In addition, injury costs are unique in that the cost distribution is so wide — with half of the injuries in our dataset having mean costs higher than 90th percentile costs — just using the average cost of a specific injury type does not provide adequate information. Some injuries involve immensely high costs, and even though the risk of these high-cost injuries occurring is low, mines need to be aware of their potential impact on their company’s financial health."

The acid mine drainage problem in Pennsylvania is of continuing and growing interest to the coal mining industry, the state government and the citizenry at large. Approximately one-third of the total volume of mine drainage presently polluting the streams of the Commonwealth originates from active coal operations and two-thirds come from ?abandoned mine discharges.? For this reason the Pennsylvania Department of Mines and Mineral Industries has mounted a significant research and action program seeking solutions to this two-fold problem. The Coal Research Board of the Department has sponsored a wide variety of research projects in an effort to study the treatment of acidic and highly ferruginous mine waters. A review of the published literature on the treatment of mine waters indicated that many laboratory and theoretical studies had been undertaken on various aspects of the coal mine drainage problem, but little applied, developmental, or engineering study had been undertaken. In January of 1964 the Board commenced a rigorous program using state and industry funds in an effort to find a ?least cost? solution or solutions to this vexing problem.

The increasing energy crisis, coupled with stringent environ- mental regulations, has created new demands for high capacity materials handling systems with unit train transporting and continuing surveillance of quality control. Effective and efficient methods of material conveyance are through high speed, high volume conveyor belts with the monitoring of quality through the utilization of automatic sampling. When we speak of high speed, high volume belt discharges we are referring to speed ranges from 600 to 750 FPM and volumes as high as 5500 TPH. To achieve the optimum operating sampling system for high capacity belt discharges, it is imperative that two major design characteristics be investigated and evaluated; namely technical analysis of operating conditions through application of ASTM design criteria and practical experience in the selection of equipment and the design of related components. The task of obtaining a sample of reasonable weight to represent an entire lot presents a number of problems and emphasizes the necessity for using standard sampling procedures.

Discussion by F.W. DeVries Comments on natural cyanide attenuation. The paper by Botz and Mudder in the November 2000 issue of Minerals and Metallurgical Processing had one disappointing aspect. Table 1 (p. 229) failed to include a significant species - neutral copper cyanide (CuCN). This compound has been most trouble-some in many plant-scale cyanide cleanup processes, includ- ing acidification-volatilization- reneutralization (AVR), hy- drogen peroxide cleanup and air/SO2 cleanup. It has also plagued many pilot efforts to use ion-exchange (IX) resin technology. This author elucidated the concept that, under some conditions, copper cyanide failed to precipitate out of treated effluents and appeared to exist as a filterable colloid that reported as copper and cyanide, with the latter measured as WAD (weak-acid-dissociable) cyanide in that analytical method. The concentrations measured were very near the levels of 0.2 ppm, often the regulatory limit for WAD cyanide. The copper concentration, using the 1 : 1 ratio for this com- pound, would then be more than 0.4 ppm, which could also be unacceptable. We discovered that it was unsafe to assume that the Cu(CN),- would surrender both cyanide ions simultaneously and allow cupric copper to be removed subsequently as, say, cupric ferrocyanide (Hatchett's Brown). This compound could be ignored as safely as the "iron blues," as essentially an inert solid, stable in geologic time if not exposed to sunlight. Under poorly controlled oxidation of the cyanocuprite ions (copper with four, three or two cyanides complexed to the copper), CuCN could well be formed and could not be assumed to precipitate out as a solid. The authors of the paper, by failing to include the CuCN species in their model, may have left users of the model prone to ignore the possible occurrence of the colloidal(?) form in the discharge, thus finding an effluent that failed to meet regulatory limits. (See addendum below.) This somewhat ephemeral material may well have been responsible for some large-scale failures of cyanide destruction technology to succeed at sites in North America and elsewhere. Two specific references alluding to this occurrence may be found: Griffiths et al., 1987, "The detoxification of gold-mill tailings with hydrogen peroxide," Journal of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, September, p. 282. DeVries, 1989, "Improved understanding in detoxification of cyanide leach liquors using peroxide" Rand01 Gold Conference, Sacramento CA, p. 15 1. It is advisable for workers in this area of cyanide removal or recycle to avoid assuming that CuCN will, with certainty, precipitate out of solution, or that the dicyanocuprite ion will part simultaneously with both cyanide ions and allow cupric copper to be dealt with by other reactions. One further piece of work may be incomplete. That is, a definitive study of the long-term behavior of CuCN that does precipitate when exposed to other compounds present in neutralized tailings. Addendum. The extremely complex reaction of cupric ion on cyanide- which, of course, results in oxidation of cyanide to cyanate, probably through the intermediate stage of forming cyanogen [(CN)2] from oxidation of HCN with its hydrolysis to cyanate and cyanide ion - involves two cyanide moieties and the reduction of the cupric ion back again to the cuprous state. This, then, can form the CuCN potential "solid" that was already the undesirable species. In cyanide cleanup, with either air/SO2 or hydrogen peroxide, copper is generally employed as the catalyst, so it is unclear what happens when the CU(CN)2-1 is ultimately exhausted. BHP Robinson contracted Minnovex Technologies to implement a Comdale Expert System at their greenfields operation in Ely, Nevada. The expert system has resulted in a significant increase in tonnage. Other benefits have also been realised, including a reduction in operation upsets (having a positive effect on downstream processes, i.e. flotation) and reduced production variances between crews. The expert system is written in a unique manner using trend based logic with minimal hard limits. The result is a robust system that requires minimal operator supervision while producing very high results. The development, success and acceptance of the system can be attributed to the strong team that was assembled for this project. The team not only consisted of BHP Metallurgists and Minnovex but most importantly included operations.

The current mine closure process is faced? with the formidable challenge of controlling environmental and legal liabilities that are associated with mine closure. The current level of environmental statutes and regulations, and the legal/liability considerations, has evolved through regulatory enactment of mine reclamation laws and other existing environmental laws, such as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). Management tools and techniques to limit risk exposure and financial losses should be employed as an active measure throughout the mine life, including closure and post-closure.

The various facets of university-company cooperative activities and the opportunities for collaborative research for the mineral industries are presented in this paper. The advantages and disadvantages of various alternative research funding arrangements for the researcher, the university, and the sponsoring corporation are discussed. Examples of university-industry cooperative research programs are briefly outlined. The concept of a cooperative mining research program is presented. The improvement of performance through techno- logical developments and human skills may well be the greatest competitive edge available to the U.S. mining industry. In this regard, the need for new endeavors between industry and universities can hardly be overemphasized.

The purpose of this paper is to tell a story - and it is a story with a moral. My topic is Present Trends in the Tax Environment Affecting Mineral Development in Canada, and the first thing to recognize is that, with depressed metal prices and weakening western economies, taxes, in and of themselves, are not really the cause of the Canadian mining industry's present doldrums. But the character and level of mining taxes in Canada has had a profound influence on the development of the industry over the past decade, and the expectations of what taxes the industry will face in future years will influence the industry's further growth. My theme today is that, in Canada, our tax system has, in the past, served as a negative and destabilizing influence in the mining industry: it has contributed to a major short-fall in investment commitments and hence in the contribution which the mining industry can make to the Canadian economy, and the adverse effect on the industry of previous high tax rates was made far worse by the confusing, contradictory and perverse nature of the tax system itself. This is a story with some happy parts in it, and, in fact, governments in Canada did learn, haltingly and grudgingly, that there are limits on the amounts that governments could safely extract from the industry, and that some assurances of long term fiscal stability were necessary if investors were to be induced to make massive commitments which could only be recovered over very lengthy periods.

This paper describes laboratory techniques and subsequent results of Bureau of Mines research to produce chlorination-grade feedstock from an abundant, low-grade, domestic, rock ilmenite ore. The research is part of the Bureau-effort to devise technology that may help decrease U.S. dependence on imported raw materials. A rock ilmenite containing about 46 wt pct Ti02 was smelted in an electric arc furnace with coke, woodchips, and Na2C03 to separate most of the iron as pig iron and to form a low-iron, titanium-enriched slag. The slag was ground, pelletized, oxidized, and then sulfated with mixtures of SO2 and air in a continuous 4.5- to 9.1- kg/h apparatus at 1023 to 1223 K. The sulfated slag, containing 60 to 65 pct TiO2, was reground and leached in water at ambient temperature to decrease the combined levels of the troublesome Ca, Mg, and Mn impurities from 7.0 to 1.7 wt pct. At levels of more than 3 wt pct, these impurities contribute to operating and disposal problems, The final product was upgraded to about 84 wt pct TiO2. This material potentially is suitable for chlorination in a fluidized-bed reactor. The most favorable results were achieved with leached slag sulfated at a feedrate of 4.5 kg/h and at temperatures of 1073 to 1123 K.

These requirements led to the development of a new and innovative approach to control system development. This paper describes the control philosophy used by Conveyor Dynamics, Inc. (CDI) and some of the key features of our approach to the architecture of control systems.

Controlled and uniform distribution of the leach solution to a heap is of primary importance to achieving the desired rate of metal recovery and PLS grade from the heap. The step used to engineer the irrigation system are the same whether drips, wobblers or sprinklers are to be used. The mining rate, leach cycle time and heap height influence the heap cell size which along with the irrigation method selected controls the design of the irrigation system. The steps in the design procedure are explained as are the advantages and disadvantages of each irrigation method.

The emerging importance of pneumatic conveying systems for bulk materials is becoming recognized by more persons responsible for materials management as consultants, at the corporate level and at the plant level. They have learned that the economic advantages of a pneumatic system are frequently decisive when compared to alternate methods. Included in these advantages are relative simplicity, ease of installation, flexibility, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, safety and ease of automation to the degree desired. In general, installed costs favor a pneumatic system when compared to competing mechanical systems if the transporting distances are long or to and from many points. In addition, supplemental use such as cooling, heating, or drying may supply the incremental value required to justify its selection. (1). The main disadvantages of a pneumatic system is the greater horsepower required per unit weight of material conveyed and material limits in abrasiveness and density. In addition, there is a tendency to increase material breakage at changes of direction and at any obstruction such as the imperfect butting of one, piece of pipe to another in the conveying line. Classification of the material at the discharge may also cause problems in dusting and segregation. Materials weighing less than 4 pounds per cubic foot tend to cause feeding and collecting problems although they can be conveyed easily. Material between 4 and 20 pounds per cubic foot can be handled with less problems but flow rate is hard to predict. The 20 to 60 pounds per cubic foot range offers best results; whereas, over 60 pounds per cubic foot, materials tend to drop out of the air stream and settle in the pipe line unless careful provisions are made to prevent it. Storm King Mines began with the concept that the resource potential of thick and steeply pitching seams of the Grand Hogback region of Colorado could be mined profitably. Two large tracts of private land (fee coal) were acquired; approximately 23.8 km2 near Glenwood and 16.2 km2 near Meeker. Figure 1. Although both properties have substantial coal reserves, one has several distinct advantages in developing a competitive mining operation. Table 1 illustrates these advantages. Among the most important considerations from an economical point of view are proximity to railroad, highway, labor force, quality of coal, seam thickness, and source of water. As can be seen, Storm King Mines' property is adjacent to the main line of the D & RGW Railroad, 1-70, and the Colorado River. The cities of New Castle, Glenwood Springs, Silt, Rifle, Carbondale, and Parachute are within short commuting distances and have available skilled labor.

Miss Gertrude Carey lived next to us in Martinsburg, West Virginia for several years. She was a retired school teacher. She was also a cousin to Messers Dan and Joe Baker who owned and operated Standard Lime and Stone Company, a predecessor of Martin Marietta Corporation. She-was well acquainted with the Baker family and their history. Here is one of the legends she told my wife, Jean, and me. The Bakers were originally Tanners. They had a tannery near Frederick, Maryland. There were several boys in the family and when they were grown each man had specified responsibilities. Will Baker was assigned the duty of locating, buying, and transporting tanbark and lime. As he traveled through Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia to locate and buy tanbark, he also talked the farmers out of some pieces of lime, which the farmers had produced in holes dug and filled with layers of limestone and wood. Will Baker took the lime and soaked a piece of hide in the milk of lime. If the lime did not spot the hide, Will Baker would get the farmer to burn some lime for him, and further tests would be made. If these tests were good - the Bakers bought the land. They eventually discovered that the limestone that would make lime that wouldn't spot the hide would also be suitable for producing steel. They began producing lime just outside Harpers Ferry, West Virginia in pots and upright kilns. That stone too small for the kilns was just perfect for railroad ballast. Now you know how "Baltimore Blue Bloods" got together!!

"Ventilation systems are not only an integral part of any underground mine design but are a significant contributor to the mine’s capital and operating costs. The ventilation and cooling design systems presented in this paper were part of the prefeasibility evaluation of an underground platinum mine in South Africa. The mine would ultimately operate at the depth of 1,200 m below surface with a proposed 4 Mtpa production rate. The proposed mining operation is a highly mechanized operation using diesel equipment. Significant daily production rate, large amount of equipment and expansive nature of the operation, contributed to a challenging while flexible ventilation design requirements. This paper presents how to safely and efficiently optimize capital expenditure and operating costs associated with the mine air cooling and refrigeration system through practical ventilation design practices. Successful capital and operational savings by modulating installation and commissioning of refrigeration facilities can influence the economic realization of such systems. The adapted planning and design approach provided a cost-effective advantage while complying with design safety and regulations. INTRODUCTION This paper outlines a prefeasibility evaluation of the heat loads and related cooling system to be employed at the proposed platinum mine. The paper also provides appropriate details for a comprehensive understanding of the applied methodology. The proposed mine will be a trackless underground operation using a combination of mining methods. Initially, ore zones with vertical thicknesses greater than or equal to 18 m will be mined using the long-hole stoping (LHS) method, while thinner ore zones will be mined using mechanized drift-and-fill or drift-and-bench methods; hence, a highly mechanized operation with LHDs, trucks, drill rigs, personnel carriers, etc. is envisioned. Broken rock (ore and waste) will be transported by the means of trucks to the main passes (ore and waste) and collection points. Mining zones identified in the project occur at depths ranging between approximately 700 m to 1,600 m below surface. Primary access to the mine will be via a 1,100 m deep, 10 m diameter production shaft (named Shaft No. 2), three additional shafts will be sunk to provide future ventilation and production support. Three main access levels are established as primary haulage levels and include a series of interconnecting ramps. Additional mining sublevels will be developed as necessary. Figure 1 shows the proposed shaft locations and main access levels in a 3-D elevated view. Mining is performed using highly productive mechanized methods. For this reason, an annual ventilation estimate is based on requirements for mobile equipment (i.e., 0.06 m3/s/kW). The air requirements imposed on the underground operation is further influenced by equipment heat loads, auto compression, and virgin rock temperature, as the main sources of in-mine heat."
