Despite several methods (empirical, statistical and machine-learning tools) to calculate blast-induced ground vibration, it is not easy to predict and simulate blast vibration precisely under varying blasting loads and strata conditions due to complications in the blasting procedure. In this study, field blast data were simulated in Ansys software using explicit dynamics, and ground vibrations for 20 single-hole blasts were monitored. The densities of emulsion explosives were in the range of 0.9 to 1.15 g/cm3. In the laboratory, rock properties were determined from rock samples collected from the mine site before blasting. The in-hole velocity of detonation (VoD) and density of the emulsion explosive were also determined and used in numerical analysis to know the ground vibrations at specific points. The results of ground vibrations predicted by the model were validated using field data.

For the REM (Réseau Express Métropolitain) project, a 2500 m tunnel was built using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) under the Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport (ADM). Although the geology under the Montreal Airport (ADM) would have been suitable for an excavation with a hard rock machine, the rst section reuired an earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM due to the soft soil located under wetlands. After excavating 280 m, the TBM was blocked in a transition zone of unconsolidated, water-bearing soils directly above the underlying bedrock. A free air intervention was not possible due to these geological conditions. After several failed attempts to create a slurry cake for hyperbaric interventions, a ground freezing system was designed and implemented, incorporating angled pipes drilled from outside the wetlands to directly in front of the cutterhead. This paper discusses the engineering reuired to form a frozen, water-tight zone in front of the cutterhead using liuid nitrogen. It also describes the complex method of replacing the disc cutters while holding the ground freezing system active in a manner protecting the health and safety of the workers.

ABSTRACT This study analyzed the publicly available health and safety policies of 26 mining companies to determine the quantity of health and safety (H&S) practices that mining companies encourage in relation to the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. A thematic content analysis of the policies identified elements and practices within the text. On average, companies communicated information on about 7 elements (range 1–14, standard deviation = 3.49) and discussed 15 practices (range 2–34, standard deviation = 9.13). The elements in which companies highlighted the most practices were risk management, emergency management, leadership development, and occupational health. A discussion of the policy trends shows areas that mine sites can improve upon within their Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, in addition to encouraging the use of both leading and lagging indicators to manage health and safety performance. INTRODUCTION Mining companies and their employees are expected to identify and manage risks at their worksites to ensure the health and safety (H&S) of everyone at the site. The primary mechanism in place to control these risks is a company’s health and safety management system (HSMS) (Boyle, 2012). Broadly, an HSMS is a set of standard, interrelated, and interacting elements used to promote and achieve occupational H&S goals (ANSI/AIHA Z-10, 2012; BS OHSAS 18001, 2007). The practices conveyed within an HSMS are expected to minimize incidents, injuries, illnesses, and even save worker lives (Alsop and LeCouteur, 1999; Arocena and Núñez, 2010). In the United States, both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulate and encourage aspects of an HSMS (US Federal Register, 2011, 2010). Many HSMS documents (i.e., Chemical Industries Association, 1995; Health and Safety Executive [HSE], 1995; International Labour Office [ILO], 2001) attribute the source of their basic management system to Deming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model of continuous quality improvement and organize their practices within this cycle (Johnson, 2002). The PDCA cycle is a well-adopted approach in health and safety management and promotes continuous learning and adaptability (Robson et al., 2007)."

In this study, the "Mine Project Risk Management" methodology, MPRM (Botin et al. 2011), has been applied to characterize the sources of uncertainty and to quantify risk in the mining engineering stages of Block Caving mining method. As the result, rock mass caveability and ore fragmentation were identified as the two most relevant parameters of this process and a methodological model has been developed to quantify the risk associated to each of these two parameters. Furthermore, the applicability of the proposed model has been validated using as a case study the Chuquicamata Underground Mine Project in Chile.

Any improvement in the accuracy of commercial comminution calculations under the Third Theory must be accomplished either by increased precision in energy input measurements, or by a better evaluation of the total new crack length produced, as indicated by the feed and product size distributions. Since at the present time feed and product sizes are approximated solely by the microns 80% passes, the most promising opportunity for increased accuracy lies in consideration of their plotted size distribution characteristics. This paper shows how more accuracy can be obtained over an increased range of feed and product sizes from size distribution studies.

The surface backfill, serving as the operational platform for continuing mining in upward slicing and filling stopes, is required to possess sufficient strength and thickness. Currently, there are limited model methods for determining the strength and thickness of the surface fill body. By analyzing the mechanical actions on the surface backfill, it is determined that its stability is mainly influenced by the combined effects of normal and tangential uniform loads under full-load conditions of trackless equipment. Assuming a circular contact surface between the tire of the trackless equipment and the surface backfill, and utilizing solutions from elastic mechanics theories such as the Boussinesq and Cerruti solution, the stress and displacement distribution of the surface fill body were obtained. Based on the maximum vertical stress condition, where the surface backfill body undergoes maximum deformation while still in an elastic state, and considering the stress–strain relationship, a model for the strength and thickness of the surface backfill has been established. According to the research findings, the design for the strength and structural parameters of the surface backfill has been developed to meet the full-load operation of the Atlas ST7 scooptram, with a compressive strength of 1.32 MPa and a thickness of 0.5 m. Numerical simulation analysis results indicate that the stress and displacement of the surface backfill align with theoretical analysis results. Practical results from industrial application in the western section of the Dahongshan Copper Mine demonstrate that the designed strength and thickness of the surface backfill meet the operational requirements for trackless equipment, resulting in significant engineering application effects and economic benefits. The research findings hold significant importance for advancing the theory of backfill mining and have high applicability and promotional value for similar mines.

A continuous pilot-scale test of the GranuFlow Process was conducted using a screen- bowl centrifuge for the dewatering and reconstitution of column flotation concentrate at a coal preparation plant in Virginia. In this test, a slipstream of the fine-clean-coal slurry from the column flotation concentrate was treated with a bitumen emulsion before dewatering. The treated products from the screen-bowl centrifuge appeared to be dry and in a free-flowing granular form, while the untreated products were wet, sticky, and difficult to handle. Specifically, test results indicated that the average moisture contents of the dewatered coal were 35.7, 35.5, 32.6, 29.9, and 26.5 wt% with Orimulsion additions of 0,0.7,3.2,4.8, and 6.4 wt%, respectively. The handleability and dust reduction of the dewatered coal product were also vastly improved.

"This paper presents a numerical study regarding the loads, and the corresponding damage, taken by the primary and secondary lining of a tunnel built in cemented fine-grained stiff soils. This study aims at establishing more rational design criteria that take into account explicity the lining performance. A 3.5 km long tunnel to be built in a densely populated northwest area of Mexico City, was considered as case study. Series of three-dimensional finite difference models, developed with FLAC3D, were used to simulate the tunnel construction, and to compute the ground settlements, internal forces, bending moments, and displacements acting both on the primary and secondary tunnel linings. Interaction diagrams were used to study the lining performance. Several advancement lengths, and tunnel covers were considered to establish their impact on the loads transferred to the tunnel lining. A practice-oriented damage criterion for tunnels was proposed based on the interaction diagram analysis. INTRODUCTION Lining performance during conventional tunnelling, CT, as defined by the International Tunnel Association, ITA (ITA 2009) is strongly affected by the construction procedure. Special attention must be taken in cemented fine-grained materials, such as those found in the northeast portion of Mexico City, due to the potential of fragile failure (i.e. the soil fails suddenly without important deformation) that these soils may exhibit. During CT, it is assumed that the ground strength contributes to the stability of the excavation, as long as the lining is built correctly. It is common practice to consider two structures, which together form the tunnel support: 1) A primary lining, which is a flexible support, which allows excavation walls to deform to mobilize part of its shear strength, and thus contributes to the tunnel self-stability, and 2) A secondary lining. Commonly, the primary lining consists of several layers of shotcrete. In this case the installation method guarantees perfect contact between the lining and the excavation perimeter. The secondary lining, if required, is used to withstand the load conditions in the long term and also has an esthetic function. This paper presents a numerical study aimed at establishing a performance damage criterion for the primary and secondary lining design in cemented fine-grained stiff soils. Due to the lack of data, the strength and deformation parameters were established through empirically-derived relationships. Three-dimensional finite difference models were developed to simulate the tunnel construction, and compute ground settlements, internal forces, bending moments and displacements acting both on the primary and secondary tunnel linings. Interaction diagrams, along with a damage criterion were used to study the lining performance. From the results gathered insight was gained regarding tunnel lining performance during CT."

Explosions in underground mines and surface facilities such as processing plants are caused by confined accumulations of combustible dust and/or flammable gas mixed with air in the presence of an ignition source. Underground explosions can be prevented by minimizing methane concentrations through methane drainage and ventilation, by adding sufficient rock dust to inert the coal dust, and by eliminating ignition sources. The effectiveness of rock dust in arresting explosion propagation was proven by experiment and practice (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11). The precise mechanism by which rock dust (generally pulverized limestone dust) quenches flame has not been fully explained, but is believed to be absorption of thermal energy from the heated gases and absorption of radiant energy, which reduces the preheating of unburned coal particles ahead of the flame front. One measurable aspect of explosibility is incombustible content. In order to determine whether enough rock dust is applied, 30 CFR1 § 75.403, Maintenance of Incombustible Content of Rock Dust, requires at least 80% incombustible content on the roof, ribs, and floor of underground coal mines. 30 CFR § 75.403-1 further defines the incombustible content as follows: ?Moisture contained in the combined coal dust, rock dust and other dusts shall be considered as a part of the incombustible content of such mixture.? In order to determine the incombustible content of the mine dust, samples of deposited dust from specified areas in a mine must be collected, analyzed, and then compared with the minimum standard of 80%. The traditional low temperature ashing (LTA) approach to determine if a coal and rock dust mixture is compliant with the inerting requirement consumes the coal dust and considers the remaining material to be inert. Compliance with the law is then determined by comparing the measured percentage of inert material of the representative band sample with the pre-established requirement of 80%. The incombustible content of the sample includes rock dust, the amount of moisture as received at the lab, and the inherent ash in the coal. The LTA method is not itself a direct measure of explosibility but is a surrogate that calculates a single parameter associated with large-scale Bruceton Experimental Mine (BEM) explosion test results conducted with dry rock dust. This method assumes a homogenous mixture with no layering of rock dust and coal dust. Float coal dust is a serious explosion hazard if it accumulates on top of the rock dust and is not mixed with the rock dust (12). Mitchell and Nagy (13) studied the effectiveness of water as an inerting agent for the coal dust explosion hazard. The study emphasized that surface water evaporates readily from dusts. Thus, in a passageway where the dust is wet, changes in weather or the ventilation system could dry the dust and make it unsafe in a relatively short period of time. Where adequate rock dust has been applied, this drying effect is not a factor. However, if the mine depends upon the moisture content as part of the incombustible content, fluctuations in the dust surface moisture within a mine can render moisture content an ineffective and inconsistent measure of safety. Additionally, if sufficient moisture is absorbed and subsequently relinquished by rock dust, a cake can form and render the rock dust ineffectual. The trend has long been recognized that mine explosions occur primarily during the winter season when the humidity is low for long periods of time (14, 15, 16). In light of this trend and due to the potential variability of the moisture content of the dust, it may not be prudent to include variable surface moisture in the total incombustible content of the sample. Instead, surface moisture should be viewed as an additional safety measure as long as the rock dust is dispersible. However, moisture limits the ability of the rock dust to disperse and can significantly reduce its capacity to effectively inert propagating explosions (2, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22). Given the methods by which the as-received moisture and incombustible content are determined, dust samples from the 2010 MSHA database were assessed to determine the variability of the moisture content throughout a year and how often the measured as-received moisture might have affected the dust explosibility determination if removed. The findings were then verified by observation in laboratory studies and within the NIOSH OMSHR Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM).

A SIMAN and CINEMA PC-based simulation model was developed to simulate and animate the truck-shovel operations of surface mines. The model is capable of simulating one mathematical dispatching strategy using linear and dynamic programming and six heuristic dispatching strategies. Data were collected from an actual operating mine through time studies and analysis of historical records. The statistical analyses were performed and appropriate theoretical distributions were fitted for various time events in the truck-shovel work cycle. The model was then applied to study overall impact of these dispatching strategies on constrained and unconstrained mine productivity. The simulation/animation model developed in this study seems to be an efficient planning tool for choosing optimal fleets and finding an 'optimal" dispatching strategy to produce an equilibrium between "the quality and quantity of production.

"Tunnel safety is evolving as science, engineering and technology make advances. Applicable safety codes and standards simply do not cover all the potentials of design, construction and operation. This paper reviews a series of tunnel projects code gaps in Seattle USA that were uncovered during the design and construction of a new highway tunnel, conversion of bus tunnels to combined road and rail tunnels, new rail tunnels using TBM and NATM, conversion of a road tunnel to light rail, and retrofit of an existing road tunnel to add lanes and improve safety systems. The perspectives of the ‘fire code official’ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) on methods to identify and resolve gaps in safety code and standard regulations, while garnering the consensus of the owner, designer, and contractors are presented. Additionally, the emergency responder command perspective on safe tunnel design, tunnel rescue during construction and operational safety is explained TUNNEL SAFETY EVOLUTION The underground has become nearly the only option to provide essential transportation corridors to continue our economic growth in key global areas. Tunnels are not built on a whim. Often significant portion of a regions wealth are invested to meet current, and hopefully future transportation demands. There are more transportation tunnels being built now than at any time in the planets history. The location of these tunnels is often selected for us based upon regional demand. Most commonly under densely populated urban centers and between populations’ centers to bypass geologic conditions like mountains and water bodies. Tunnels are being built in unforgiving soils, between tectonic plates, in extremes environmental conditions and often, under the very heart of the highest density population centers on the planet. All of these locations can bring with it conditions that challenge our common assumptions about safety. These extraordinary locations and soils create risks for both those constructing the tunnel, and in design engineering to meet the ‘minimum’ requirements at the lowest costs. There is lengthy history of above ground safety. Most countries and major local jurisdictions have adopted, or created safety requirements for the construction of above ground buildings. Through decades of use, these safety requirements have evolved, changed and been expanded to cover a wide gamut of actual and potential safety risks. However, the use of the underground for tunnel transportation corridors has grown exponentially with limited attention to safety requirements."

During the past 20 years, FKC-Lake Shore, located in southern Indiana, has been working with Contitech, the German conveyor company, to push vertical conveyor technology to new depths and open up additional opportunities for underground mine owners. Historically, the underground mining industry has largely been unable to realize the benefits of these efficient systems due to the design limitations in maximum depth and capacity. Until recently, only relatively shallow depth mines with low production rates have been a ?t for a vertical conveyor system. This, however, is changing with technical advancements in the Pocketlift system. With each milestone, a new vertical conveyor record is set for depth and capacity. For instance, in 2002, FKC-Lake Shore set one such record with the installation of a Pocketlift system at a mine in the Illinois coal basin with a lift height of 273 m (896 ft) and a production rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). Although it was unthinkable at that time, today?s vertical conveyors are capable of reaching lift heights up to 700 m (2,300 ft) with an average production rate of 450 t/h (500 stph). These new lift heights and production rates are opening the technology to more potential mine owners and shifting the way people look at moving material in the future.

"BACKGROUND As of December 2015, there are roughly 475 road tunnels within the United States according to the most recent national tunnel inventory data compiled by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA); whereas, there are more than 615,000 highway bridges on public roads. The FHWA estimates that tunnels represent nearly 100 miles of Interstates, State routes, and local routes. Tunnels are part of the national transportation infrastructure and represent a significant financial investment for the owner and, hence, the tax payers. Tunnels, that are not properly maintained, usually require more extensive repairs and consume more resources. Tunnels must provide safe, reliable, and effective transportation even as these structures age and deteriorate. Furthermore, tunnels generally remain in service for extended periods of time due to their very high construction costs. For example, many tunnels were constructed decades ago during two historic periods of highway system expansion; the first period correlated with the era of public works programs linked to the Great Depression of the 1930-40s; and the second period of expansion occurred with the building of the interstate highway system in the 1950-60s. As such, these tunnels are fast approaching 60 to 80 years old. Congress enacted the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), which was signed by the President on July 6, 2012. This legislation followed a fatal tunnel incident on July 10, 2006 and a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report1 that noted the importance of conducting regular tunnel inspections. MAP-21 authorized the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to develop a mandatory inspection program for all tunnels on all public roadways (Bergeson and Ernst 2015): To help safeguard tunnel users and to ensure reliable levels of service, the FHWA developed the National Tunnel Inspection Program (NTIP), which is comprised of the National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS), the Tunnel Operations Maintenance Inspection and Evaluation (TOMIE) Manual, the Specifications for National Tunnel Inventory (SNTI), and the Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE). The data collected from the program will be stored in a National Tunnel Inventory (NTI) database. A comprehensive and refresher training program was also developed to help qualify and certify key tunnel inspection personnel to include the program manager and team leader."

The iron mine and beneficiation facilities of Marcona Mining Company are located on the coast of south central Peru. The facilities include an open pit mine, crushing, concentrator containing grinding, magnetic-separation and flotation facilities, pelletizing plants and a completely self sufficient infrastructure. Total production capability is about 10,000,000 DLTPY, of which almost 6,000,000 DLT result from the fine-grind magnetic concentrate. Over 1,500,000 DLT of fine-grind concentrate is obtained from processing high-pyrrhotite ore. Although the orebody contains quantities of oxidized primary ore and transitional ores (mixed magnetite and hematite), the principal ore is predominantly a coarsely crystalline to fine grained massive magnetite.(l-3) In the primary ore the major impurities found are silicates and the iron sulfides- pyrite and pyrrhotite. Sulfur levels typically average about three percent although levels of five percent are not unusual and some ores contain up to ten percent total sulfides. In general the silicates and pyrite are readily rejected from finely ground primary ore by magnetic separation and very basic froth flotation processes. The high iron, low sulfur concentrate produced is particularly suitable for production of high quality oxide pellets. However, pyrrhotite is not removed from the magnetite matrix by either of' these simple beneficiation methods.

"The Contract C310 is part of the current biggest infrastructure project of Europe “Crossrail” which is a major new cross-London rail link project and comprises the construction of the North Woolwich Portal, Plumstead Portal and the twin tube Thames Tunnels with a length of approximately 2.6km. Two Mix-Shield TBMs (Diameter 7.12m) were driving through differing challenging ground conditions (Thanet Sand, Gravels, Flint and Chalk) below the ground water table. The two tunnels were underpassing several listed buildings, sensitive structures, operational railway tracks with low overburden and close to existing subway tunnels in an urban environment. Several additional measures as compensation grouting, micro piles and an intensive monitoring has been carried out to ensure a safe tunnelling process. PROJECT OVERVIEW CROSSRAIL Project Crossrail Crossrail is currently the biggest infrastructure project in Europe which has been developed to serve London and the southeast of England. The project includes the construction of twin-bore tunnels on a west-east alignment under central London and the upgrading of existing National Rail lines to the east and west of central London. The new rail track, as shown in Figure 1, starting in Shenfield/ Abbey Wood in the east of London and ending in Reading / Heathrow Airport in the west of London, includes the construction of nine central area stations, providing interchange with London Underground, National Rail and London Bus services, and the upgrading or renewal of existing stations outside central London.Altogether there will be 118km of new rail tracks, including 42km of tunnels and 40 train stations. After completion in 2018, Crossrail expects 200 million passengers per year (Tauriainen, Rädle, Ingram 2013)."

As open pit mines continues to grow deeper, managing air pollution can become challenging. During arctic air inversion, the temperature of the air over the mine increases with altitude, and the cold, heavy, surface air is trapped in the pit. This problem is complex, and any solution will require an extensive understanding of the interactions between the aerodynamic movement of air, air inversion, meteorology, pollutant sources, and transport phenomena in the open pit mines. The availability of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has elucidated the pollutant flow mechanism in open pit mines. Very few CFD studies have been published, especially the Large Eddy Simulation (LES), on the contaminant transport in deep open pit mines under arctic air inversion. The contaminant transport in an open pit mine under arctic inversion is due to a stable or nocturnal boundary layer in micro-meteorological terms. Understanding the physics of the stable boundary layer (SBL) is relevant to air flow and pollutant transport in deep open pit mines. This paper focuses on a Large Eddy Simulation (WMLES as Sub-Grid Scale Model) modeling of the SBL and pollutant transport in a large open pit mine.

The conversion of maf coal to pyridine solubles and gas was investigated in a microautoclave batch reactor for two Kentucky washed coal samples (Ky. #9 and Ky. #11). Solvent hydrogen donor strength was controlled by the tetralin content of a mixed 1-methyl naphthalene-tetralin solvent. Primary liquefaction conversions greater than 90% in 10 minutes of reaction time at 427°C were achieved in liquefaction solvents with moderate hydrogen-donor strength (circa 40% tetralin). A modified irreversible first order rate expression, containing a parameter (a) to account for the intrinsic reactives of the maf coal, described the experimental kinetic data rather well. The integrated form of this rate expression is -k1e x = a (a- ß)e (eq. 1) Parameter ß in equation (I) is the pyridine solubility of the starting maf feed coal, x is the primary liquefaction fractional number of conversion, k1 is the specific reaction velocity constant and ? is reaction time. Primary liquefaction rate was found to be quite temperature sensitive and independent of coal when a liquefaction solvent containing 40% or more tetralin was employed. Primary liquefaction rate appears to depend on liquefaction solvent hydrogen donor strength for solvents containing = 40 wt.% tetralin. The intrinsic reactives in the maf feed coal or a appear to depend mainly on the inertinite group maceral content of the coal for the two coals studied in liquefaction solvents containing 3 40wt.% tetralin. In contrast, a appears to decrease in liquefaction solvents of low donor strength., i.e; solvents with less than 40wt.% tetralin.

The selection of belt conveyor drive systems (*) is the subject of ongoing investigation. Frequently this choice has been governed by an incomplete perspective on the major considerations. A more comprehensive and objective approach is desirable. This paper presents additional factors which hopefully will broaden this perspective. BACKGROUND Conventional belt conveyors are powered by electric or electro-mechanical drives(*) mounted at the conveyor's head, tail, intermediate return span, or a combination of these (Fig. 1). A list of the drives reviewed is given in Table I. The following are main elements influencing the selection of the drive system: 1) dynamic characteristics, 2) economic factors such as capital cost, plant spares compatibility, reliability, availability, maintainability, and 3) environmental constraints. The principal dynamic characteristics of concern are the reactions of belt forces generated by the drive system during starting of the conveyor. Another attribute for consideration is the application of multiple driven pulleys used to 1) lower the conveyor's belt tension requirements, 2) increase the expected tonnage throughput, allowing for possible drive component failures, and 3) increase the plant spares flexibility related to the drive assembly.

INTRODUCTION The decontamination of the former Shiprock uranium millsite and the interim stabilization of its tailings piles began in March 1974, and ended in June 1978. Personnel monitoring for whole body gamma ray exposure was conducted for selected individuals working at the mill site throughout most of this period. The millsite and exposure conditions are briefly described to develop a basis for interpretation of the exposure data. Millsite The Shiprock uranium millsite is located in the community of Shiprock, New Mexico on a bench overlooking the San Juan River (Figure 1). Both Shiprock and the millsite are located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. About 1.5 million tons of tailings were produced on the millsite during its operation from 1954 to 1963. The tailings were pulped with waste process fluids and water, and discharged to form two tailings piles. The piles (ponds, dams) were formed with earth starter dikes and the dikes were then raised using the separated sand fraction of the tailings. The slime fraction of the tailings were discharged into the diked impoundment. The mill was shut down and partially dismantled before the lease expired in 1973, and the remainder of the mill and tailings reverted back to the Navajo Tribe which was the lessor. Portions of the millsite were then occupied by the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA), a tribal enterprise. In addition to its regular activities, NECA established an on-site training school for heavy equipment operators. The trainees principally used the south tailings pile as a practice area and spread the tailings into a 10 hectare row of raffinate ponds located along the southwest side of the millsite. Overall, the training activities inceased the effective area of the tailings piles from 20 to 35 hectares. Another 56 hectares were contaminated with wind and water eroded tailings. Exposure Conditions Persons decontaminating a millsite may be subject to radiation exposures from several sources. Only whole body gamma exposures are discussed in this report. These exposures are arbitrarily divided into three levels: high, intermediate, and low. The levels are related to areas in which the decontamination work was being done and have no connotation concerning imminent hazards. High exposures would result when persons were working with raw tailings, and intermediate exposures would occur when persons were working in the ore storage and mill yards. Low exposures would result from working in areas where surface contamination exists from wind and water erosion. [ ] The millsite and its contaminated environs were divided into major areas to facilitate the decontamination work (Figure 2). "The global underground construction and tunneling industry is in pretty good shape. Billions are being spent in shoring up aging infrastructure in the United States and other places, and new underground projects are being put out for bid.With each new project, comes new equipment, technology and tunneling methods. So it is incumbent on tunneling professionals to constantly improve their knowledge of the profession. This is where spending a few days with other underground construction professionals can assist the tunneler in keeping up.Every two years, tunnelers and underground construction engineers, contractors, suppliers, designers and owners from around the world gather for the Rapid Excavation Tunneling Congress (RETC). The 2017 conference was held in June in San Diego, CA. The UCA of SME puts on the conference.This years’ RETC attracted 1,400 attendees. The accompanying sold-out exhibit totaled 188 service and equipment suppliers. In addition, the conference had the UCA of SME bookstore, where the new History of Tunneling in the United States book was introduced. And a short course on tunnel rehabilitation was featured.Technical programmingRETC 2017 featured nearly 100 technical presentations. Topics covered the breadth of the global underground construction industry. Here is a sampling of a few. The proceedings from the conference is available from SME, 303-948-4200, www.smenet.org.Accomplishing extraordinary tasks as a machine supplier for Metro Doha: The construction of the Metro Doha in the State of Qatar established a modern, safe, efficient and integrated public transportation network. Upon final completion of multiple phases, the network will comprise four metro lines with a length of 216 km (83 miles) and 100 stations. Phase one comprises 112 km (43 miles of underground tunnels (56 km or 22 miles of twin-tube tunnels). Twenty-one earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines (TBM) were deployed by the four different joint ventures. The project was initiated, managed and supervised by the owner, Transport Authority Qatar Rail.Phase two of the Doha Metro will start upon the completion of Phase One in 2019 (Qatar Vision 2030). The owner placed full faith in the manufacturer’s abilities to deliver equipment of high quality, state of the art standards within the given time frame. This paper focused on the manufacturer’s scope of delivery and on the supplier’s high standards of quality in production, logistics and services."
