INTRODUCTION Statistical analysis of results obtained by workers survey is very often limited to the determination of the collective dose and mean annual values. This information is not sufficent by itself for radiation protection purposes since the cumulative exposure of a worker during his working life is not taken into account. A more complete analysis would be obtained by considering both: [ ] These two notions are different. The former depends on the evolution of the protection with time and is related to annual limits (ICRP, 1977 and ICRP,1977 a). The second depends mainly on the works performed during the period of survey, the interference of protection evolution is weakened. So it is useful to foresee how the individual average annual doses would be when considering survey periods of 5, 10 years, or more. STUDIED POPULATION In order to analyse the two previously mentionned notions it is necessary to follow up a well defined population of workers which is continuously exposed to the radiological hazards on a long enough period. The selected population is that of the workers of the French uranium mines always present during the 1971-1979 period (9 years). The number of individuals is 937. The radiological hazards are: 1. exposure to radon and short-lived daughters 2. exposure to long-lived ore dust 3. external irradiation. The workers of the uranium mines are exposed to these radiological risks in different ways according to the work performed. It is therefore necessary to subdivide the population into more homogeneous groups with respect to the radiological risks. Three groups are considered: - Group 1 : 227 individuals whose radon and dust exposures are always nil - Group 2 : 449 individuals whose radon and (or) dust exposures are different from 0 every year - Group 3 : 261 individuals represent a mixed category. Some features of these groups are given in table 1. [ ] The 937 followed individuals represent approximatively the half of the whole population of the French uranium mines. Taking into account the procedure adopted to select the studied population, it appears clearly that this population is not representative of the whole miner population. DOSIMETRIC RECORDS Three risk indicators are considered .Individual annual exposures to radon and its shortlived daughters. They are determined by ambient monitoring based on radon concentration measurements and recording of the times elapsed in the various workplaces. For each worker the annual exposure is represented by the mean annual air concentration and is expressed as a fraction of the maximum annual concentration (MAC). Given the administrative arrangements and the effective state of equilibrium between radon and its daughters, the maximum annual concentration is practically equivalent to 1 Working Level = 2.08 x 10- 5 jm-3. (UNSCEAR, 1977). . Individual annual exposures to long-lived ore dust which are also expressed in fraction of the maximum annual concentration. . Individual annual doses of external irradiation (X and [y] rays) expressed in mSv (= 10-3 Sievert). Irradiation monitoring is based on use of individual film badges.

In 1947, coal production in Western Canada was 10 Mt (11 million st) which predominantly came from 120 underground mines. By 1968 production was down to 1 Mt (1.1 million st). Production in 1981 was back up to 29 Mt (32 million st), but only 1.5 Mt (1.7 million st) of the total was from underground mines. In fact, because of competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines were operating in 1981-the McIntyre and B.C. Coal mines. While several other underground mines are being planned, this article will deal with only the two in production. Geology The geology in Western Canada is frequently complicated; hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitched and usually soft or well cleated. The 5000-km (3,100-mile) coal belt that runs from the Yukon to Mexico is well developed in Western Canada. It is divided into two distinct regions-the Rocky Mountain Lower Cretaceous coals and the mostly uniform level Upper Cretaceous coals of the plains area to the east. Isolated pockets of coal occur at Vancouver Island and Hat Creek. Hat Creek's massive 300-m (984-ft) thick geologically recent lignite deposit is 250 km (155 miles) inland. Geography The infrastructure of Western Canada is shown in Fig. 1 along with the locations of the two mines. Both rely on exports of premium low volatile metallurgical coal mostly to the Pacific Rim. The rail distance from both mines to port is 1100 km (684 miles)-accounting for a significant portion of the sales cost of the coal. Mining Methods Two main mining methods are used-room and pillar and hydraulic. Longwall has been attempted and is being considered again. In the past, a simple hand method used gravity to help mine most of the coal on steep pitches. Levels were driven in the seam, rising slightly to assist in draining. On the advance, mining would start at the upper level, usually from adits driven in the side of the mountain. Rooms or angles were driven up 100 m (328 ft) at a suitable angle for the coal to flow down. On retreating out of the level, the pillars would be taken, starting from the highest point, using batteries to stop coal or rock flushing down the room. Batteries consisted of three to six stout wooden posts set at an angle to resist material flow. Coal loading was directly from chutes at the bottom of raises into 1- to 2-t mine cars hauled by diesel or battery locomotives. Often output was restricted by the supply of empty cars. Mechanization began in the 1960s but was difficult in these conditions. Mines such as Canmore and Coleman continued operation into the 1970s but closed because steep seams, high methane emissions, and faulting made mining difficult. Raman Spectroscopy has become increasingly popular as a method to rapidly identify and characterize minerals, gem stones and other inorganic materials. Raman spectroscopy provides valuable information about the chemical bonds and structure of materials. In fact, the peak locations and intensities observed in a Raman spectrum can often be used to confirm the presence or absence of particular species in a sample. Some modern Raman spectrometers have been designed to analyze samples less than a micron in size while others are designed to rapidly screen bulk material with no sample preparation. Recent advances in software and automated instrument control have greatly reduced the complexity of Raman spectral analysis and provide an easy-to-use tool for analyzing minerals. We will describe the application of several multivariate statistical analysis techniques that have been developed to make use of the spectral libraries. In these techniques the spectrum is treated as a vector and sophisticated mathematical techniques are used to determine which spectral representations in the reference library best match the spectrum from the sample. The DXR Raman microscope was used to 1) Identify minerals by spectral searching, 2) Identifying several species in a sample using multi-component analysis 3) Mapping different species in an aggregate sample and 4) identifying inclusions in a sample.

Hydrogen peroxide and calcium peroxide are used to improve the extraction of gold/silver and reduce cyanide consumption in heap leaching and mill leaching operations. FMC's standard grade H2O2 and FMC's Permeox™ solid peroxygen, a formulated product containing cao2, was used for the experimental work. It was found that the rates of release and the longevity of these peroxygens in ore-cyanide mixtures are significantly different. When choosing a peroxygen, one of the key factors is extrac­tion time, with the longer extraction times of heap leaching primarily favoring calcium peroxide and the shorter extraction times of mill leaching primarily favoring hydrogen peroxide. A series of laboratory leach tests showed the choice between H2O2 and CaO2 to be ore and process specific. H2O2 and/or Permeox™ improved the gold extraction in four out of five ores tested. (2 sulfide and 2 oxide). Mixtures of H2o2 and Permeox™ were also found to significantly increase the gold extraction rate. A fifth ore (sulfide) did not respond to peroxygen treatment. In addition, savings in NaCN consumption was obtained with Permeox™. Both peroxygens offer economic incentives to gold processing.

This paper presents some of the work associated with the reduction of employee exposure to diesel and blasting contaminants at an underground salt mine. The purpose of the paper is to outline the procedures recommended in resolving the problems associated with these contaminants. The first stage consists of a complete mine ventilation survey. The purpose of the survey is to identify any problems in the mine. The survey consists of air quality, air quality and ventilating pressure measurements taken throughout the mine. After completing the survey, the information is analyzed to identify problem areas and the possible causes. All available solutions to reduce the levels of contaminants are then explored and evaluated for feasibility. The PSU Mine Ventilation Simulator is then used to accurately simulate possible changes to the ventilation system. These ventilation projections are a useful tool to illustrate to the company and union personnel the possible benefits of various ventilation changes. This paper will illustrate the phases involved in making important and sometimes expensive ventilation decisions. Through the cooperative efforts of MSHA, company and union personnel, the levels of contaminants have been reduced by approximately 200 percent. As a result of these ventilation improvements, the company can now safely increase production approximately 25 percent.

The use of resin-in-pulp (RIP) to recover dissolved metal ions from slurries is receiving increasing attention. A number of engineering aspects have been identified as crucial if a RIP sys­tem is to operate efficiently. These are the mixing of the resin and pulp, the transportation of the resin and pulp and the sepa­ration of the resin from the pulp medium. Evaluation of numer­ous alternatives revealed that air agitation is the most suitable means of mixing to effect uniform distribution of the adsorbent and to effect a high mass transfer rate, airlift pumps are the most effective method of transporting the slurry particularly as they are characterized by a low degree of resin degradation and sieve bends are the most suited means of effecting the resin/pulp sep­aration. This paper details the design of the reactor that incorporates the three identified unit operations and presents data obtained from the contactor when operated at a throughput of I 00 000 t/m. The airlift pump was found to be sensitive to pulp density and submergence ratio. The screening ability of the sieve bend was influenced by resin and the pulp density . The reactor is a cost effective, metallurgically efficient unit for the recovery of metal ions from high density slurries.

The Pierina deposit was acquired in August 1996 when Barrick Gold Corporation purchased Arequipa Resources, a junior mining company with extensive land positions in Peru. At the time of acquisition, Arequipa ha.d developed two exploration tunnels and drilled 9 exploration holes on the property. Metallurgical tests, conducted on samples taken from the tunnels and the exploration holes indicated that the ore was amenable to heap leaching. Barrick's exploration team recognised from the outset, the potential of the mineralisation and convinced Barrick's senior management that this was indeed a world class deposit that should be pursued. On November 25, 1998, the fi was poured at Pierina, 27 months from the time of acquisition. During that period BmTick completed its exploration programme, prepared a development plan including capital and operating costs, production profiles and cash flow forecasts, and a schedule to develop a mine and construct a leach pad and gold recovery plant, including all supporting infrastructure. All permits and environmental approvals were obtained and all necessary land was acquired. The project was completed on schedule and under budget. This was the first greenfield mine development for Barrick outside of North America. This paper details, mainly, the research and development, engineering, construction and commissioning of the metallurgical process facilities.

The goal of public policies is to connect desired ends with practical means toward their achievement. How the desired ends are determined, and whose goals and objectives they incorporate, depends upon the culture and political system of the country in question. With few exceptions, policies change over time to reflect changed perspectives and understanding of the world around us. This is true regardless of the policy area in question. Thus, how societies view and manage their mineral resources has evolved in response to public attitudes, societal needs, economic circumstance, cultural perspectives, political orientations, technological advancements, and geological knowledge. In this paper we examine how the scope of concern has changed for mineral policy. We then review the overarching issues that have in recent years been considered essential components of mineral policies. We point out how neoclassical microeconomics has influenced recent policy design. We then use a market flow diagram to illustrate how policies can be focused at specific market issues. We next discuss mineral resources in the context of sustainable development. We identify issues that become relevant when the frame of reference is enlarged beyond ensuring supply and capturing economic rent. We show that policy based solely on neoclassical economics may not be able to effectively incorporate these issues.

Bauxite ores in Fokida belong to Parnassus-Giona zone and are found exclusively in limestone in two bauxite horizons, which are of great economic importance and with very unfavorable conditions for the reclamation process. The ore bodies are usually less than two million tones. They are in many cases encountered near the surface as a result of the erosion and are exploited either with open pit or underground methods. Mining activity, which dates back 70 years, causes many changes to the environment and most of all to vegetation and landscape. The first step to mining exploitation of bauxite ores is the selection of an underground or open pit method taking into consideration mostly economical and technical criteria. Open pit exploitation, which causes the most severe environmental consequences, is done with the method of vertical benches in hard rock with the use of explosives. The impacts on the landscape that result from the method of vertical benches are: ? The front of the excavation that is usually solid rock of the hanging wall (limestone). The height of the benches varies from 10 to 20 meters and the gradient of the final slope is designed to be around 65o, unless the rock is not so stable and the gradient is reduced accordingly.

The basic transportation planning process consists of: 1. Inventories and analyses of existing conditions. 2. Estimates of future growth. 3. Determination of future travel demand. 4. Testing alternative systems to satisfy future travel demand. The many modeling techniques used in the transportation planning process are well known, commonly accepted, and thoroughly described in readily available literature. This paper will concentrate on the fourth step of the planning process, specifically the development of alternative systems for testing, and will discuss some of the factors which should be considered during the development of alternative systems. There are many factors which require consideration and which have a bearing on the configuration of alternative test systems. These comments will be limited to the influence of geographic, demographic, geologic, and economic factors. Although addressed separately, the four are to a great extent related and have a significant effect on each other. The objective of examining these factors during the early phases of system planning is to assure that more detailed corridor studies will not be stymied by considerations which could have been anticipated and accommodated at an earlier time. The innovation in a technological field is reflected by the Research and Development (R & D) activity in it. It is explained why patent literature is a more reliable indicator than non-patent literature for the assessment of the R & D activity in the technological fields considered. Consequently the R & D activity is measured in this article through the patent applications filed in the fields considered. The pattern of patent application filings in Drilling, Mining, Tunneling and accessory technologies is analyzed at an international scale over the period 1990-2000. A statistical analysis of the fluctuation of the number of patent applications per year, per country and per technological field is performed. The technological fields are defined on the basis of the internal patent classification used in the European Patent Office. The article attempts to detect the high activity and ?cutting edge? technologies over said period, to relate them to political or financial events and possibly to foresee the ?cutting edge? technologies of the future in which potential investors could be successful. Strong patents are revealed on the basis of the frequency of their citations by the applicants in patent applications or by the patent examiners in the search report. International as well as specific national trends in the innovation are spotted and analyzed.

The mining method at the Cannon mine uses heading and bench stopes, which are subsequently backfilled with cemented high-strength fill before pillar removal. The dimensions of the pillars are 7.3 m wide by 19.8 to 28.9 m high (24 ft by 65 to 95 ft). They require careful blasting in order to not damage the rock, compromising pillar strength and complicating later removal. Additionally, the proximity of dwellings makes vibration control a must for good neighbor relations. A blast monitoring study was conducted in order to optimize bench blasting practices to maximize fragmentation, reduce costs, and to minimize wall damage and ground vibration. The Cannon mine is a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (US) Inc., a 92% owned subsidiary of Gulf Canada Ltd., and Breakwater Ltd. Asamera is the operator. The mine is located at the south end of Wenatchee, WA, a town of roughly 45,000 people on the eastern flanks of the Cascade Mountains. Gold is the primary product at the mine. The rock is extracted using a sublevel end-slicing method on 15 m (50 ft) lifts, with subsequent backfilling and pillar removal. The stope widths, dictated by rock conditions at 7.3 m (24 ft), are the same in the primaries as in the pillars, or secondaries.

The Van Stone zinc-lead mine is located in northeastern Washing- ton in Stevens County. It is about 24 km (15 miles) south of the Canadian border and 48 km (30 miles) west of the Idaho line. The deposits occur in late Cambrian age limestones and dolomites of the Metaline Formation. The bedding controls the trend of the zones containing the lenses of zinc-lead mineralization. The Van Stone property and vicinity is almost entirely covered with glacial drift averaging perhaps 6 m (20 ft) in thickness. Outcrops are very sparse. Outcropping gossan with zinc mineralization was first discovered by George Van Stone in 19 13, in what is now known as the South Ore Zone. Only minor trenching was done at that time. The property was idle until the mid- 1920s when Hecla Mining Co. drove several short adits and performed minor diamond drilling. In 1938, Willow Creek Mines of Nevada Inc. acquired the Van Stone plus adjacent parcels and commenced drilling on the known South Ore Zone. In the course of an expanded drilling program, the nonoutcropping North Ore Zone was discovered and was drilled out along a N30°E strike for about 305 m (1000 ft), beyond which point no mineralization was intersected.

At the Schwartzwalder Mine (Cotter Corporation, Golden, Colorado) ion exchange resins have been used in mine water treatment experiments. The experiments, initiated in October 1979 and currently in progress, demonstrate that mine water uranium values can be reduced to levels as low as 10 ppb. Duolite® A-101D, a strongly basic anion exchange resin, was tested in laboratory-scale columns (1 inch diameter) initially and then in pilot-scale columns (4 inch diameter), using both co-current and counter-current operational modes. Observations and conclusions resulting from these studies can be summarized as follows: (1) Duolite® A-101D appears to have successfully extracted uranium at influent levels of approximately 2.0 ppm over multiple loading and elution cycles, consistently producing effluent concentrations as low as 10 ppb uranium. (2) Based upon present test data, counter-current regeneration appears to be the key to successful operation. Upflow loading and downflow elution are the preferred modes for service and regeneration, respectively. (3) Filtration is a necessary pretreatment to remove fine clay and inorganic precipitates that will foul the resin, causing excessive pressure drop and poor loading and elution kinetics. (4) This waste treatment application is unique in that it offers the opportunity to recover some or all of the capital investment in the treatment facility

Silver Bell is located about 56 km (35 miles) northwest of Tucson, AZ. It is a classic porphyry copper deposit containing enriched disseminated chalcocite ore in altered porphyritic rocks with chalcopyrite in adjacent skarn zones. The discovery of Silver Bell was an evolutionary process that occurred over a 75-year period. Recorded mining activity began about 1865 on Boot Hill east of El Tiro pit (see Fig. 1) where outcrops of altered limestones were found to contain 425 to 482 g (15 to 17 oz) Ag mixed with copper oxides. By 1874, the Young America Copper Co. was mining shallow occurrences of 30% Cu along the north side of the present Oxide pit. The ore was shipped by wagon to Yuma, AZ, and then by boat to San Francisco for smelting. By 1881, the district supported several mining companies, two small smelters, and was being favorably compared to Bisbee in local newspapers. Most of the ore mined in the period 1865-1903 came from pods of massive sulfide or their oxidized products which were distributed in an unpredictable fashion through a large skarn zone in Paleozoic limestone east of El Tiro pit. Ore grades varied from 5 to 10% Cu.

Today, in Detroit, Michigan, a 14 ft. 6 in. diameter soft ground tunnel is being mined at penetration rates limited only by the logistics of liner handling and spoil removal. Soil conditions are highly variable and include clays ranging from very plastic to very hard, gravels, sands, silts and boulders. The permeable soils contain high concentrations of methane gas, compressed by groundwater levels some 40 ft. above tunnel invert. Despite these adverse conditions, mining crews frequently complete their 70 ft. production quota in six hours and go home. In one 4000 ft. reach of tunnel, progress averaged 68.9 ft. per mining shift. This paper has been written to explain this extraordinary accomplishment, and to demonstrate that truly continuous rapid excavation in difficult grounds is now limited by factors other than the excavation process itself. BACKGROUND The Detroit metropolitan area has a long and interesting history of soft ground tunneling. From 1949 to 1968 the city of Detroit alone constructed some 75 miles of soft ground tunnel. During this period the development and common usage of rotary or "wheel-type" soft ground tunneling machines was pioneered in the Detroit area. These machines are designed for, and were successful in, the cohesive or clayed soils that predominate the downtown Detroit geology.

This paper summarizes a three phase face ventilation study which was conducted from September 1989 through March 1990 to determine face area methane liberation patterns on two extended longwall sections. The coal seam being mined was considered gassy and the mine liberated an average of 14.4 million cubic feet per day (cfd) or 0.41 million cubic meters per day (cmd) of methane through the mine fans. The mine also used an extensive underground degasification program to recover up to 13.4 million cfd (0.38 million cmd) of methane. Data was collected while the longwall sections were mining from the beginning, middle and end of panel extraction to determine the relationship between the methane liberation and extent of longwall retreat. As expected, methane concentrations did increase from the headgate (intake) to the tailgate (return) side of the longwall face and peak concentrations were detected above the shearer as it passed a methanometer location during mining. There were significant differences in the methane liberations due to the location of the active face within the longwall panel. Results from this study could be used to determine a minimum design face air quantity for an extended longwall section operating under similar conditions.

Starting in 1967 two major hydroelectric power projects have been implemented in East Africa viz. Kafue Gorge in Zambia and Great Ruaha in Tanzania. The two projects have similar characteristics and each consists of an underground power plant, a dam in connection with the power plant and a reservoir dam. The power plants are both designed and constructed according to principles applied in Scandinavia for a long time. Each consists of a headrace of a horizontal unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 10 km, vertical penstock shafts, machinery and transformer halls in large rock caverns and a tailrace of an unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 1 km. The head of the power plant of Kafue Gorge is 400 m, Great Ruaha 175 m, the capacity is 900 MW and 200 MW respectively. Both plants were executed in one stage, but building and erection works were made in two stages. However, the power plants show some interesting differences in design. The power plants are briefly described in the following, special regard being paid to the excavation works. Numbers, arithmetic, mathematics. Where did it all come from? Who needs it? We all do, but many school children would not agree. Engineers, physicists, accountants, tax collectors, and most of the general public are well aware that modern society in large part is founded on mathematics and could not exist without it. Mathematics developed over thousands of years as part of the everyday life of man. No one area, tribe, or race can claim discovery. In fact, from the records that do exist, it is evident that many facets of mathematics were discovered independently of others who made similar discoveries. While proof may be lacking, the earliest concepts of mathematics may be some 250,000 to 300,000 years old. The first use of numbers as written records is unknown. However, a bone of a young wolf deeply cut with 55 notches-arranged in two rows, one of 25 notches, the other of 30-was found in Czechoslovakia. Dated to be about 30,000 years old, it is perhaps an early record of some kind of counting system. It is assumed that mathematics was developed as an answer to man's practical needs, but anthropological studies suggest that the art of counting may have developed in connection with the needs of primitive religious ceremonial rites. Fingers probably were first used to designate sets of from one to five objects. Using both hands, up to 10 items could be indicated. As civilization developed, so did the need for more flexible systems to record items of trade, measure land, and figure taxes. Aristotle noted that the development of the decimal system comes from the fact that most people are born with 10 fingers and 10 toes. In spite of this obvious fact many early civilizations used binary, ternary, and quinary systems while vigesimal systems (with 20 as a base) and even sexagesimal systems (with 60 as a base) were used by others. A form of writing was in use in both the Mesopotamian and Nile valleys as early as 3000 to 4500 B.C. In Mesopotamia, wedge-shaped marks were impressed upon soft clay tablets that were hardened in ovens or by the sun. Many thousands of such tablets have survived. When the tablets were finally deciphered, some were found to be records of items shipped in trade, inventories, tax accounts, and mathematics exercises for teaching. Mesopotamia is also the source of an interesting board game dating back to about 2500 B.C. Its buttonlike men and triangular dice were apparently used with squares of shell, inlaid with lapis lazuli and red sandstone. Unfortunately, rules of play were not found. In Egypt, record preservation was somewhat better. Discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 eventually led to deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphics that included a numbering system at least 5,000 years old. These records show a competence in counting and numbering. A calendar of good accuracy may have been in existence as early as 4,200 years ago. With the rapidly growing use of hydraulics in mining equipment, maintenance personnel should be familiar with the various components in hydraulic systems. Hydraulic systems do wear out - the fluids they transport are hot and turbulent, the equipment they power often imposes tremendous pressure pulsations and bending stresses, and the working environment is harsh. Therefore, even though hydraulic hoses are made of remarkably trouble-free components, they do need to be replaced periodically. There must be coupling methods that allow hoses to be replaced without disturbing other components. Couplings must also provide a variety of leak-resistant connections between hoses and other components in the hydraulic circuitry. Threaded Connection and Seals Hydraulic coupling thread ends and sealing arrangements are standardized, with many types available. Their outward appearance varies, but coupling configurations are recognizable by examining threads and seals and comparing them to the examples provided here. Iron Pipe Thread There are two kinds of iron pipe threads normally used in mining equipment circuitry - National Pipe Tapered Thread for Fuels (NPTF) and National Pipe Straight Thread Mechanical Joint (NPSM). The NPTF seal is the engagement of the coupling threads, called thread interference. When tightened, the tapered thread of the male fitting binds into that tapered thread of the female fitting to form a relatively leakproof seal (Fig. 1). In the NPSM seal, there is a 30° angle seat machined into the end of the male NPTF fitting. This seat engages with a mating 30° angle cone on the inside of the female fitting. Female NPSM fittings have straight threads, as opposed to the tapered threads of the NPTF fittings. However, most NPTF solid male fittings also have a 30° angle seat enabling them to be used with NPSM female fittings (Fig. 2). JIC and SAE Fittings Joint Industry Conference (JIC) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) seals are formed by joining two mating, conical metal surfaces. The coupling threads are used to bring and hold these surfaces together to form a leak-resistant seal. A JIC connection is a solid male threaded end, with a 37° machined male nose, mating with a 37° female flare seat. When connected, the mating surfaces are held together by the threads, but the threads do not form the seal. The female seat is created by flaring a tube end or machining the interior surface of a stem to 37°. A female JIC has a swivel nut, allowing the sealing surfaces to be joined together without twisting a hose or twisting the seats against each other (Fig. 3). JIC couplings are frequently used on low, medium, or high pressure hydraulic circuits on mining equipment and machinery. The SAE connection is similar in appearance and sealing characteristics to the JIC system, except the angle of the machined male nose and female flare seat is 45° (Fig. 4). "O" Ring Fittings Seals for "O" ring fittings are formed by compressing an "O" ring against an exposed machined surface on a mounting block or hydraulic component part. The "O" ring must be compatible with the type of hydraulic fluid used (Fig. 5). An "O" ring boss connection is made of a male straight thread
