Several discrete-event simulation models have been developed for designing the conveying system capacities of underground coal mines. Most of these models require the use of a step function approach to mimic the loading process at each conveyor loading point. Over the years, practitioners have generally employed one of three versions of the step function approach. An important issue is how these three versions compare to each; other in terms of simulated capacity requirements for belt conveyors. Another issue is how they compare to the peak capacity design. This paper addresses these issues by statistically and quantitatively comparing their simulation results. The consequences and problems associated with using each version are also discussed and summarized.

This paper presents the highlights of a general-purpose simulator for mineral processing plants that is being developed at the University of California, Berkeley. The state-of-the-art structured design methodogy based on a top-down design approach is being used to construct a modular and completely structured simulator such that it is independent of the unit operation models and routines. The simulator provides for two levels of operation allowing prebuilt or user-built simulation flowsheets depending upon the degree of computer knowledge expected of the user. The philosophy used in designing this simulator appears to be unique in the field of flowsheet simulation. The paper also includes a mini-example demonstrating the usage of the simulator.

The technical paper correctly points out that the kriging variance is not a good measure of the uncertainty of the estimated (i.e., kriged) value of individual blocks. The au thors claim that their proposed jackknife method, which is a rekriging of each block by eliminating, in turn, one sample from the original sample set and then taking the average of the rekriged estimates, not only gives good block estimates, but the resulting jackknife kriging standard deviation is a useful indicator of the "true uncertainty associated with block estimates." However, they immediately abandon the idea of using the block-by-block standard deviations, reasoning that these standard deviations are not independent and that there is no easy way to utilize them. There may be another reason for not using them. The jackknife standard deviations for individual blocks given in their example are mostly in the range of 0.004 to 0.005 oz/st (0.14 to 0.17 g/t) with only one block having a high value of 0.012 oz/st (0.41 g/ t). These individual block standard deviations are as low as the jackknife standard deviation for the mean grade of the entire shape, i.e., 0.0041 oz/st (0.14 g/t). Do they represent the "true uncertainty" of the individual block estimates? Could the authors explain this? In a global shape consisting of a large number of blocks, any given sample will affect the kriged estimate of only those few blocks within its vicinity. This is the rationale for the authors' selective rekriging, making the jackknife algorithm more efficient. On second thought, why not do away with jackknifing altogether? Just cumulate and normalize, if necessary, the kriging weights of each sample used during the ordinary block kriging process, and then compute the global variance from these kriging weights and their respective sample grades? After all, isn't the global mean grade nothing but the weighted average of the samples used in the estimation? Reply by G.S. Adisoma and M.G. The strengths of the technique lies in its simplicity, i.e., it uses the concept of mean and standard deviation and the fact that it can be easily combined with other tools, in this case kriging. Because the jackknife kriging (JK) estimate is also the mean of the pseudovalues, the JK standard deviation is attractive just as the standard deviation of the mean explains the variability of the data. The difference is that the pseudovalue calculation in jackknife kriging uses the ordinary kriging (OK) weighting scheme instead of simple arithmetic averaging. The data used to illustrate the jackknife technique in the paper consist of high values that are roughly three times the low values. The resulting JK estimate of the block grades show that the highest estimate is roughly twice the grade of the lowest estimate. The contrast between the low and the high estimate is more evident in the JK estimate than in the OK estimate, even though the mean grades of the blocks for the two estimates are very similar. Nonetheless, in this paper, we are concentrating more on the need for a more realistic measure of uncertainty, or precision, for the estimate. Unlike its OK counterpart, the JK standard deviation of the blocks clearly reflects the original data variation. The highest JK standard deviation of the blocks is three times its lowest value. This follows our intuition that, when the samples used to estimate a block is more variable, the resulting estimation variance (or standard deviation) should be higher than the case where the samples are more uniformly valued. However, block-by-block standard deviation or variance is of little practical value in reserve estimation and classification, as well as in mine planning. One is usually more interested in quantifying not the variance of the individual block estimate, but the uncertainties associated with a much larger dimension, such as the minable reserve. Thus, the thrust of the paper is to find a simple way to obtain a single estimation variance or standard deviation associated with the reserve grade estimate. The discussion by J.H. Tu did not mention how one would obtain the global variance from the OK weights and the sample grades. As a technique that offers a data valuebased measure of uncertainty for its estimate, the "leave-one-out" jackknife fills this need nicely through the block kriging shortcut approach described in the paper. Introduction Trends of successful discovery technology and psychology emerge from a thoughtful study of various companies' exploration programs. These subjective patterns can be generalized into groups of factors for discussion. Here, for convenience, factors that influence exploration success are separated into management and geologic concerns. Most successful discoveries have a demonstrably favorable management combined with a technically competent geologic input. Both are required. But the management input is decisive. Management factors include the correct definition of management's role; cost of exploration; time needed for exploration; commodity selection; and the fostering of autonomy, creativity, and confidence in the geology department. Geologic factors include imaginative technical competence (field as well as academic), correct development and use of empirical exploration or prospecting models, and dedication. Success comes to those entities that are properly managed and have technological competence. A management team that directs a company's business has been compared to a dynasty. The dynasty lays out policy and follows up with appropriate action. In that management's power is pervasive, the term is appropriate. Management's role is, however, more important. Many examples can be cited where the geologic input was impeccable. But management somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, and the exploration success was turned to a third party's profit. Management Factors Management's role can be broadly generalized to four parts. These are to identify the commodities it seeks, define its part in the exploration process, develop a functioning exploration department, and have the desire to succeed. It must have confidence in its geologists and delegate to them the authority and responsibility they need to operate successfully. Head office management cannot do the thinking for a field staff thousands of kilometers away. There is no substitute for confidence and delegation of authority. Successes came to those who had the freedom to act. Motivation is a management requisite. Management's role is to prevent destructive, internecine political battles within the corporate structure. Most large US mining corporations have well known histories of political strife that have damaged their exploration efforts. Management's role must, above all, include the desire to succeed. There are cases where management has been confronted with a commercial exploration success, but their reaction is to request additional study or exploration. Perhaps the problem of bringing a commercial find into production is beyond their capabilities. But a bona fide discovery sent back for additional work commonly is lost due to that management. The cost of exploration is a factor that management must accept. A variety of studies made during the past 40 years shows the cost per discovery to be $25 million, $38 million, $200 million, or even $290 million. These figures are derived by dividing the total exploration expenditure by the number of discoveries. However, successful management dynasties have a much lower cost per discovery during their management regime. Asarco, from 1948 through 1963, had one of the lowest cost discovery rates in the world. Duval Corp., from 1948 through 1968, had comparably low discovery costs. Placer Development, from 1955, was equally successful. Western Mining in Australia has had one of the longest lived dynasties associated with exploration success. Time is vital in exploration success. Most successful exploration case histories stress sufficient time in project exploration so that the target is well tested. A large target cannot always be adequately evaluated by a few holes (strat or concept testing). Serendipity helps in exploring large targets, but it best operates in a lengthy program. Numerous case histories include pleasant surprises. But these came mostly after the 10th hole. Commodity markets are important factors governing exploration success. Management's decision to explore for a specific commodity can doom its effort if that product suffers from severe oversupply. Unquestionably, progressive copper price increases from 1948 through 1968 helped convert marginal porphyry copper discoveries

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I would like to thank Hans von Michaelis for inviting me here today to talk to you on the subject of "How to Reduce Capital and Operating Costs at Heap Leaching Projects". The comments I have to offer are based on my experiences in gold heap leaching by Newmont Gold Company in Nevada, by Newcrest in Western Australia (formerly Newmont Australia), by Minera Yanacocha in Peru, by Penmont in Mexico, by Z­Mont in Uzbekistan, by the Hochschild Group in Peru and expe­riences in copper heap leaching by Magma Copper Company in Arizona and as a consultant on several other smaller projects worldwide. These comments are a mixture of technology, ideology, philos­ophy, strategy, logic and opinions and might be looked at by many of you as "one man's view". I like to look at them as "a view from the bridge". Let me add that it doesn't bother me that you may not agree with my comments and that I would be interested in your comments or criticisms at the end of this presentation. I don't intend to discuss the details of the mineralogical and metallurgical test work. I will assume, for this talk, that the test work has been conducted very carefully and that the ore in ques­tion has been determined to be heap or dump leachable. Let's begin with a couple of don'ts! ! First, "don't build the mill until you have a mine". This might sound to many of you as fundamental but believe me it continues to happen. The minable reserves should be well known and established as being economical to mine and leach. NPVs, ROis and IRRs are fine if you can be sure of the gold price you use in your calculations. The best method is to carefully estimate the capital cost and, most importantly, the operating cost per ounce of gold recovered which should include the repayment of the borrowed capital and the interest thereon. For example, if the operating cost under these conditions is $200 per ounce, you have a project. If it is $400 per ounce, walk away f om it. Incidentally, the same prin­ciple can be applied to projects involving other metals such as silver, copper, lead, zinc, etc. The second don't is - "don't be sheep". Don't climb on the bandwagon with respect to design and operation because every­one else does it a certain way. Keep an open mind, be versatile, look for change, look for every possible innovation for reducing capital and operating costs. Beware of those who will tell you "we tried that it won't work" or "it's too expensive" or "that's a crazy idea" , <' ''what do you know about mining - you are a metallurgist aren't you" or "what do you know about metallurgy - you are a miner aren't you" or "only geologists can handle this issue". Be careful about pigeon-holing people according to their basic degree and experience. In these days of low metal prices, we need to consider everybody's ideas, as crazy as some of them might seem.

V. Rajaram&apos;s paper does not accurately reflect the status of Eastern oil shale development as it stands today. Today, there are numerous firms and research organizations pursuing development of the Eastern oil shale resource. Details of the current projects can be found in the symposium proceedings for the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium held in Lexington, KY, in November 1985. Additionally, the comparison of the Paraho and HYTORT processes is invalid because the HYTORT process design used it not an accurate representation of the HYTORT process. I will briefly address this point. It is disconcerting to see the author reference hydroretorting work conducted at the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) (circa 1978) in the introduction, which indicates hydroretorting (the HYTORT process concept) yields of up to 250% of the Fischer Assay oil yield, and then turn around and base the remainder of the paper on the 1981 "Synthetic Fuels From Eastern Oil Shale Report," which depicts the HYTORT process as yielding only 115% of Fischer Assay. Indeed, work conducted at IGT to 1981 indicates commercial oil yields for the HYTORT process would be in the range of 200% to 210% of Fischer Assay. A more thorough literature search by the author would have yielded a 1981 publication by Schora et al., entitled "Update on the HYTORT Process" presented at the Symposium on Synthetic Fuels From Oil Shale in Nashville, TN, October 1981. This paper thoroughly discusses the shortcomings of the referenced study with respect to the HYTORT process. For the interested reader, I can also recommend a June 1984 report entitled "An Economic Comparison of Five Process Concepts for Using Eastern Oil Shale," published by Los Alomos National Laboratory (LA-10106-MS, Parkinson et al., NTIS No. DE84-015981). This study applies a realistic HYTORT design (circa 1982) and indicates that HYTORT is the most econom¬ical method of processing Eastern oil shales (about $20/bbl less than Paraho). Additionally, completion of the HYTORT feasibility study in June 1983 by Phillips Petroleum Co., Bechtel Group Inc., HYCRUDE Corp., and IGT has resulted in development of designs that will make the use of HYTORT on Eastern oil shales even more economic. HYCRUDE Corp., a second-tier subsidiary of IGT, is involved in commercialization and licensing of the HYTORT process and is active in efforts to develop the Eastern oil shale resource. As such, I am disappointed to see outdated material that has the potential for adversely affecting development of Eastern oil shale resources published in MINING ENGINEERING. I can only hope that this response will serve to mitigate any negative opinions that may have been formed. Today, activity in commercializing Eastern oil shales dominates the oil shale scene in the US and indicates a realization of the potential for these shales. Reply by V. Rex, Jr. I hope that Hycrude&apos;s work will lead to the funding of a pilot plant to demonstrate that yields of greater than 200% of Fischer Assay can be achieved in a commercial plant using eastern US oil shales.

Introduction Responding to Congressional inquiries regarding the purchase of a number of major domestic mining and metals companies by foreign firms, the US Bureau of Mines examined trends in foreign direct investment in the US. mining and mineral processing industries1. "Foreign Direct Investment in the US Minerals Industry" analyzes the extent of foreign investment in several major mineral commodity industries. It identified the countries of origin of foreign investment in US mineral assets. The study also described several reasons for the growth of foreign investment in US minerals and discussed some potential implications of this activity. Foreign investment trends in the economy and minerals For the economy as a whole, between 1977 and 1985 the number of US affiliates of foreign investors more than doubled - from 4046 to 9824 - as did employment at these affiliates - from 1.2 million workers to 2.9 million (Table 1)2. During this same time period, the total value of assets of all US affiliates throughout the economy rose from $239 billion to $736 billion (1985 constant dollars). In the domestic minerals industry, foreign investment also grew substantially during that same time as the number of US minerals-related affiliates increased by 74% - from 125 to 217 - between 1977 and 19853. During the same period, employment at all foreign-owned affiliate mineral operations in this country increased by 78% and totaled 198,000 workers at the end of 1985. Parallelling the growth in the number of and employment at foreign-owned US mineral and metal operations, the total value of US mineral assets owned by foreign firms (or individuals) has nearly doubled since 1977 and amounted to $30.9 billion at the end of 1985. The rate of increase in foreign investment in US mineral assets was slightly higher in the metals industries than in the nonmetallic groups. Foreign investment more prevalent in minerals Perhaps a more useful way of evaluating the growth in foreign investment is to analyze growth in the "intensity" of foreign investment - the proportion of total US industry assets held by foreign investors. Although insufficient data on total industry assets prevented the development of such a measure, employment data provide an indication of relative differences in the intensity of foreign investment among the mineral industries and other industries. For example, as noted in Fig. 1, the 198,000 minerals industry workers employed at US-affiliate companies in 1985 represented 12.7% of total employment in this sector of the economy. In comparison, for the mining and manufacturing sectors of the economy as a whole, 7.8% of all workers were employed at US-affiliate firms in 1985. For the total economy, 2.7% of the entire civilian employed workforce worked at US-affiliate firms that year. Using employment as an indicator, foreign investment has been more prevalent in the minerals industry than in most other industries. About one worker in eight in the minerals sector was employed at a US-affiliate firm in 1985. Introduction The US Bureau of Mines&apos; (USBM) world reserve/consumption ratios (Table 1) indicate that, if the world is relatively peaceful in the next two decades, there should be ample world supplies of minerals to permit rising standards of living for increasing world population. But it must be remembered that most mineral reserve estimates are conservative and that normal mining practice is to develop a ton of ore reserve for every ton mined. It should be noted that "reserve," as used in this paper follows the definition given in US Geological Survey (USGS) Circular 831, 1980; "that part of the reserve base which could be economically extracted or produced at the time of the determination." In addition to accurately determining the geologic parameters of mineral deposits, a judgment as to whether that deposit is a "reserve" per se involves consideration of many other factors. These factors were recognized nearly a century ago by a well-known mining engineer and later President, Herbert Hoover. In "Principles of Mining," 1909, Hoover wrote: "Unfortunately for the mining engineer, not only has he to weigh the amount of risk inherent in calculations involved in the mine itself, but also that due to fluctuations in the value of metals. If the ore is shipped to custom works, he has to contemplate also variations in freights and smelting charges ...In a free market, the law of supply and demand governs the values of metals as it does that of all other commodities. So far, except for tariff walls and smelting rings, there is a free market in the metals under discussion. The demand for metals varies with the unequal fluctuations of the industrial tides. The sea of commercial activity is subject to heavy storms, and the mine valuer is compelled to serve as weather prophet on this ocean of trouble. High prices, which are the result of industrial booms, bring about overproduction, and the collapse of these begets a shrinkage of demand, wherein consequently the tide of price turns back." Current supplies and use There have been ample supplies of most mineral materials to permit several-fold increases of world production of common major mineral based minerals (steel, aluminum, copper, and cement) over the past three decades. Motor vehicle production is a major consumer of mineral materials. However, in the last decade, down-sizing to facilitate improved fuel efficiency and reduce harmful emissions has reduced the weight of the average US-made automobile 15%, to 1.5 t (3200 lbs). Also in the US, there are 92 million dwelling units, or on average, fewer than three persons per dwelling unit. Construction is another major consumer of materials in the industrialized developed countries. It will also be a major consumer of materials worldwide as less developed nations seek to improve their infrastructures by adding roads, bridges, railroads, airfields, ports, and housing. Fortunately, a large number of traditional common materials, many of mineral origin and also many of agricultural origin, are readily available for construction. "INTRODUCTION Conventional mine planning is performed on a single resource model at a selective mining unit (SMU) scale deemed appropriate for the deposit and mining method. Estimation methods such as kriging and inverse distance, commonly used to construct a single model, are susceptible to histogram smoothing (Rossi & Deutsch, 2014). This can be mitigated by limiting the number of composites per estimate, therefore correctly reproducing the distribution of estimates (Boisvert & Deutsch, 2012). Search limiting techniques remedy histogram smoothing at the cost of introducing a problematic conditional bias (Isaaks, 1999) and introduces even greater spatial smoothing. Localization is an alternative, offering histogram reproduction through post processing of more robust probabilistic modeling techniques. A single localized model at the SMU scale is desirable. The correct histogram can be reproduced and a single model allows for the use of conventional mine planning and resource evaluation techniques. Despite the advertized benefits of localization, the necessary reliance on a larger panel scale as a middle step in the localization process yields unsightly “edge-effect” artifacts (Boisvert & Deutsch, 2012). Two approaches to artifact reduction are presented here. The first is a straight forward optimization approach designed to minimize an objective function that penalizes artifacts including panel edge discontinuities to generate a model free of panel edge-effects. The second approach redefines a panel in a less conventional fashion as a randomly chosen set of SMUs throughout the domain. This method produces a model void of any regular panel shape resulting in an artifact free model. Artifact reduction minimizes the obvious “edge-effect” issues of localization but local precision issues described by Boisvert & Deutsch (2012) persist. Localization is not a replacement for quantified uncertainty for comprehensive risk analysis and resource evaluation. LOCALIZATION Initially developed with Uniform Conditioning in mind, localization collapses a distribution of local uncertainty at a panel scale to an SMU scale model for mine planning (Abzalov, 2006). This process has been extended to Indicator Kriging (Hardke, 2011), Sequential Gaussian Simulation (Boisvert & Deutsch, 2012) and MultiGaussian Kriging (Daniels and Deutsch, 2014). The localization process is performed in a similar fashion regardless of which technique is chosen to create the prior model of uncertainty. Methodology There are three scales of importance considered in the localization process. The point scale, otherwise known as the data scale, is the smallest and is the scale at which experimental data is collected. The SMU or block scale is the familiar scale at which mine planning and resource evaluation takes place. Lastly, the panel scale is larger and contains a number of SMUs. Each of the three scales is illustrated in Figure 1."

Today, man is able to probe space because of technological advancements including the ability to control certain combustion reactions very precisely. The recent adjustment of the attitude of Skylab by radio command from earth is an excellent example of such control. It is strange, and indeed unfortunate, that very little is known about the mechanism of combustion of pulverized coal, the primary fuel for rotary kilns. The selection of a coal for direct pulverized firing of a rotary lime kiln may be determined by trial and error, persistence of sales personnel, proximate analyses, grindability, or apparent BTU cost. Occasionally, the only question asked is, "How much lime will it make?" To study the behavior of a particle of coal in the combustion stream of a rotary kiln is most difficult. We must, therefore, discuss the general mechanism of combustion of pulverized coal, and relate this mechanism to the selection of a proper coal for a rotary kiln. The classic three T&apos;s -time, temperature, turbulence -must be enlarged upon for a better understanding of the problem. Pulverized coal occupies only 0.01 per cent of the volume of air required for its combustion. This mixture behaves like a gas and the general laws governing the movement of solid particles in gasses are in effect. The differential velocity between air and coal particles depends on forced and natural convection, diffusion, and the length of time each particle is in the combustion space. As a particle of coal absorbs heat from its surroundings, it begins to give off volatiles". These gasses ignite as their kindling temperature is reached, and burn readily because of the excess oxygen immediately available. Combustion proceeds at this stage by the outward diffusion of gas from the coal particle into the surrounding oxygen-rich envelope. We could say combustion at this stage represents a small coal particle surrounded by an envelope of volatiles burning at their point of contact with sufficient oxygen. This release or expulsion of gasses from the coal may result in exfoliation or disintegration of the coal particle. If this occurs, and it is desirable that it should, it will accelerate the final stages of combustion. The escape of volatile material from the particle of coal and its subsequent combustion will cause increased turbulence around that individual particle. Ignition is maintained by radiation from gasses and solids in the combustion system, and most importantly, re-radiation from the kiln refractories and the process load.

Staurolite, an iron aluminum silicate mineral, is used industrially as a high value-in-use sandblasting agent, as a premium-grade foundry sand, and as the source of aluminum in portland cement manufacture in areas where the aluminum constituent is not economically available from shale or argillaceous limestone. Staurolite is produced by E. I. duPont de Nemours and Company as a coproduct of titanium mineral production in Florida, where it was first recovered on a commercial scale in 1952 from the Pleistocene sand deposit known as Trail Ridge. At this deposit it comprises about one-fifth of the heavy mineral suite, the principal other heavy minerals being ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, kyanite, sillimanite, and tourmaline. Staurolite and other nonconductive silicate heavy minerals are separated from the conductive titanium minerals on high-tension electrostatic separators. The silicates are then separated from one another magnetically, the staurolite being relatively magnetic. In the total process, 200 t of raw sand yield 7 t of heavy mineral concentrate from which about 1 t of staurolite is recovered. The staurolite concentrates have the characteristics given in Table 1. Staurolite concentrates are sold in three grades having the size distribution of subrounded grains shown in Table 2. All three grades are used in sandblasting for cleaning metal, for paint removal, and for cleaning masonry buildings. Staurolite compares favorably with lower priced abrasives, such as boiler slags and silica sand, in applications where the abrasive is used only once and is not recovered and recycled. Because it is hard, fine, clean, and dense it can reduce blasting time, and less material is required to clean a specific area. Compared to higher priced abrasives such as aluminum oxide and garnet, which are recycled, staurolite costs significantly less per kilogram and cleans at equal or faster rates. Its breakdown factor, which is a measure of recycling performance, is intermediate between those for aluminum oxide and garnet. [ ] [Tables 3 and 4] show the blast cleaning performance of the three staurolite grades compared to other abrasives. [Table 5] compares the longevity of premium priced abrasives during recycling. [Table 6] shows a cost comparison between silica sand and staurolite. Fringe benefits claimed for staurolite&apos;s use as an abrasive are: 1. Good flow properties and freedom from the lumps or slivers found in silica sand or boiler slag abrasives. 2. Low dusting affords good visibility, permits faster working, and reduces cleanup problems. 3. Heated storage is not required during freezing conditions, because the mineral is nonhygroscopic.

INTRODUCTION Cancer of the lung in uranium miners has been reported by many authors. In fact, it has become a most popular subject for comment by environmentalists, health physicists, and newspaper writers. I believe it appropriate for me to discuss cancer of the lung in uranium miners in a general way commenting briefly on etiology, incidence, tumor cell types, and particularly, tumor development and treatment. Cytological development of cancer in its incipient stages, particularly the in situ stage, relates to potential cure with photoradiation, early diagnosis, and treatment. Our observations of the cytological response to this modality of diagnosis and treatment will be discussed briefly since this area will also be covered by Doctor Balchum. The cause of lung cancer in uranium miners is primarily due to two carcinogens; cigarette smoking and radon daughter radiation. Cigarette smoking has continued at the same intensity over time among uranium miners; about 60% of the miners are cigarette smokers and 40% are non-smokers. Radon daughter exposure to the uranium miner has varied from mine to mine, but over the last 20 years has been reduced to a minor fraction (.3 WL) of the level that prevailed in many of the mines during the 1950-1960 era when many of the miners were exposed to more than 10 WLM. Sputum samples have been examined on as many uranium miners as responded on the Colorado Plateau since 1956. Autopsy studies were done whenever this was permissible. In some instances, only tissue from a biopsy of a node or lung was available for study. Smoking histories were also taken. Approximately 200,000 sputum samples were examined and histological examinations of lung lesions were made from 312 cases. METHODS The method of sputum cytological collection and preparation was reported previously. I The lungs were fixed with formalin and prepared for sectioning by Dr. Oscar Auerbach with his block-section method. RESULTS Three-hundred-twelve lung cancers from uranium miners were examined. The tumor types and the age at death for each type, smokers and non-smokers, are given in Table #1. The incidence of the tumors in the smokers and non-smokers is given in Table #2. The incidence of small cell carcinoma of the lung has decreased from an incidence of 76% of all the lung cancers found in uranium miners to 22% of these lesions (Figure #1). The decrease in incidence of this tumor is probably due to decreased exposure to radiation in the mines.

Introduction Belt conveyors usually run in a straight line. The correct alignment is a major criterion for reliable functioning and optimum running properties. Any misalignment of the conveyor, especially mistracking of the belt, can have many negative effects. As a consequence of this, damage can occur on the belt and conveyor, some material can he thrown off at the edges and serious running problems can arise. In the worst case the belt can come off its supporting structure so that operations are brought to a halt. The absolutely straight alignment of a belt conveyor is actually impossible so that on closer observation every belt conveyor contains more or less sharp curves. Whereas on non-movable conveyors the deviations from the straight can he kept within the range of practical measuring accuracy by careful installation, movable conveyors in surface mining or belt systems in difficult terrain often contain curves that are easy to see with the naked eye. Below ground, too, alignment cannot always achieved to a desirable extent or is changed by geological faults over the years. Despite these unwanted curves, most belt conveyors perform their function reliably. In view of the belt tension, the belt tends to take the easiest path. This in general is the shortest distance between the pulleys on which the belt is tensioned and bent. This means for example that for a curve radius of 10,000 m over a flight of 100 m the greatest deviation from the ideal line is as much as 12 cm. And a figure of this magnitude cannot normally he accepted. In such cases, use is made of guide devices to properly train the belt if it doesn&apos;t center itself anyway. If it&apos;s possible to control the belt position over such unwanted curves. it can also he expected that the belt tends to follow the desired curved path within certain limits. I&apos;d now like to cite a few examples to illustrate the ways and means of guiding a belt conveyor in curves. Cost-effectiveness The advantages of belt conveyors, in particular for longer conveying distances and mass flows have been known and undisputed for some time. However, there are often obstacles standing in the way of the concept of straight routing. If a belt conveyor is to bypass elevations or existing buildings or to follow the seam of underground deposits or a predetermined path, then substantially tighter radii and longer curves are desirable or necessary.

Mine closure and reclamation issues have evolved over the past several years becoming further complicated by stricter standards and by the cmrent economic climate and price of gold. Many mine permits are calling for more stringent remediation of spent ore heaps and tailings. Leachate solution water quality must meet strict discharge criteria for multiple parameters besides cyanide at mine closure. Closure standards are more difficult to meet and most mines do not have an increased budget at the end of mine life to deal with the falling standards. These issues make additional gold recove1y at the end of mine life a critical problem in financing some closure operations. Another issue is the length of time that must be budgeted for heap rinsing operations. Innovative biological processes developed and applied by Pintail Systems, Inc. at numerous mine closures have indicated that bio-processes can significantly enhance gold recovery dur­ing heap cyanide bio-detox over the recoveries expected from rinse operations. If heap rinsing can be eliminated or reduced and if gold recovery can be improved at the end of mine life, many mine closures may be possible with processes that pay for themselves or generate profit. Additional advantages of the bio­detox technology is that it can be engineered to treat multiple contaminants besides Weak Acid Dissociable (WAD) cyanide. Other contaminants treated in heap process solutions include nitrates, ammonia, heavy metals, thiocyanate and total cyanide. At the Cripple Creek and Victor Mining Company Ironclad Mine near Victor, CO, 5 million tons ofrinsed, heap leached spent ore were biologically detoxified to reduce cyanide content, enhance gold recovery during bio-detox and to reduce dissolved metals in heap leachate solutions. During the bio-detox treatment period a substantial improvement in gold recovery allowed the detox oper­ation to operate as a profit center. Final gold recovery was at least twice what was expected from a normal rinse operation.

My recent experience has been with wet tropical environments, which address a different set of concerns than Nevada, for example. Spraying rather than drips are required in most cases just to assist the water balance requirement, and my comments address those situations. Most tropical operations are faced with both extremely wet and very dry seasons, with some having multiple cycles during the year. A heap leach operation must address the rate of solution building up within the ponds and how long the volume must last until the next rainy season. It may be easier to construct sufficient pond volume to permit yearlong operation than by discharging excess solution now, and searching for water later. Pond capacity requirements can help with the following: Consider using the solution that could be locked up in the pads during leaching to assist water balance problems. Spray excess solution continuously onto spent ore that would not be normally be sprayed again to "soak up" the excess solution, and stop spraying when the water balance is low, allowing the solution in the spent ore to return back into the system-with or without cyanide added. In a multiple lift system, if intermediate HDPE liners are planned for solution grade control, have drips placed before the HPDE liner is in place. The drips can distribute excess precipitation throughout the lower lifts to control the water balance, while the most current lifts are being leached and sent directly for the preg pond. With only 2 million tonnes (2.2 million tons) of spent ore involved, up to 200,000 cubic meters (53 million gallons) of solution could be moved into or out of the water balance system, if proper methods are designed and installed. That is equivalent to one meter (40 inches) precipitation falling on a 200,000 square meter (2.2 million square feet) pad area. You may even get a little bit more gold recovered as the solution drains from the earlier pads, as well.

Facing lower gold prices, gold mine operators throughout the world are seeking ways to reduce costs for treating refractory sulfide ores. Many gold mines, currently producing oxide ores, have underlying refractory sulfide deposits and the operators could extend the mine life by processing these sulfides. Fortunately, oxidation technologies for refractory ores need not be complex nor costly. GeoBiotics, Inc. has developed heap biooxidation technologies (GEOCOAT™) for treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates. GEOCOATTM uses simple low cost unit operations common to heap leaching of gold and copper ores. The cost effectiveness and flexibility of GEOCOAT™ heap biooxidation allows mining companies to expand operations to include refract01y ore. In addition, GEOCOAT™ can be utilized to supplement or replace existing oxidation processes such as roasting, autoclaving, or agitated tank biooxidation, and to treat a lower resource grade than is currently economic. The GEOCOAT™ technology involves coating sulfide concentrates onto sized support rocks and biooxidizing the sulfides in a heap configuration. After biooxidation the concentrate is stripped from the support rock, neutralized and leached in conventional cyanidation facilities. Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. (AGC) produces over 885,000 ounces of gold per year from oxide and refractory ores at its Obuasi operations in Ghana. Refractory flotation concentrates are treated in roasters and in the world's largest stirred tank biooxidation facility. In August 1998, AGC and GeoBiotics jointly constructed and operated a field demonstration heap of the GEOCOATTM process at the Obuasi operations. The heap contained I 082 tonnes of support rock and 125 tonnes of concentrate. The heap was approximately 19 meters square at the base and 3.8 meters high, and ran for 88 days after which the concentrate was reclaimed. Average gold recovery after biooxidation was 91.5% with a NaCN consumption of 8.6 kg/t. Baseline gold recovery by direct cyanidation of the concentrate was 53.8%.

US Borax began exploration in southeast Alaska in the summer of 1971 with a staff of two, Barry Watson and Jackie Stephens, based in Spokane, WA. After several years of prospect examinations in the islands west of Ketchikan, AK, and with the able assistance of prospector-pilot Kenny Eichner, Jackie Stephens proposed and organized a boat-based, helicopter-supported, stream sediment sampling program to explore the western contact of the Coast Range intrusive complex on the mainland. The rationale for this included: the extension of known mineral trends from Canada into southeastern Alaska along favorable geologic zones; the western contact area of the Coast Range intrusives with metasediments and metavolcanics was a favorable target for metals exploration as shown by numerous small prospects. Knowledge gained from mineral exploration of the island areas indicated that they were well mineralized, but already well explored, and that the known mineral potential was probably present in subeconomic quantities (Brooks, et al.). Publications of the US Bureau of Mines and other scientific agencies were gathered and every prospect within the southem southeastern Alaska area was plotted. This in itself lent a tremendous amount of knowledge to the total exploration program. US Borax&apos;s McLean Arm copper property on Prince of Wales Island was drilled and dropped while this compilation of data was proceeding. We found that many companies had followed one another around the island areas, but little or no exploration had been done on the west side of the Coast Range, and that many explorationists flatly stated that the west side of the Coast Range was barren of mineralization. In summary, although some of the shoreline and near shoreline areas of the mainland had been explored, no organized boat-helicopter exploration program had been done along the favorable western zone of the Coast Range Intrusive complex. We decided to use a boat as a floating hotel for the crews that were to be helicoptered into the back country from tidewater for our initial stream-sediment sampling program.

M. Gershon The article is an excellent one, providing a basis for the conduct of the major tasks in underground mine planning and scheduling. I object to only one word. Since that word is featured in the title, it is a strong objection. The word used erroneously is optimization. There is no optimization performed in the article. By definition, an optimization is an approach that yields the best of all possible solutions. We can limit this definition to its narrowest sense, the optimization techniques of operations research such as linear programming, or broaden it to include less sophisticated search procedures that find the best mine plan or schedule. No such claim is made in the article. No optimization of any kind is performed. The major tool used is a simulation, which, in truth, is probably more appropriate for this problem than any optimization. But simulation does not optimize. It only allows for quick evaluation of many options, leading to the selection of the best plan "of those tried," not "of all possible plans." This article, of course, is not the first mining paper to make this error. It seems that the word optimization is used more to impress people than to refer to any act of optimizing. It is used in a way that implies "try to optimize"or "come close to optimize," but not to really do it. It is usually appropriate to quietly ignore this error. But when Dr. Chatterjee, who has done so much good work in true optimization projects and whose work I have come to admire, makes such an error, it is time to publicly dispute it. Having discussed this very point with him in the past, I am sure that he will agree. If he can support this position in his response, perhaps people will start to listen and we can reduce the number of false claims of optimization. This should be easy for him in this case since the approach he used, simulation, is the more appropriate one anyway.

The dissolution of gold in cyanide_ leaching has been we11 published with the genera1 acceptance that gold is oxidised by oxygen and stabilized by complexation with cyanide [1]. The dissolution of gold is essentially an electrochemical process. The rate of the anodic gold dissolution is controlled by the cyanide concentration. - (2) While the cathode reduction of oxygen is controlled by dissolved oxygen concentration - (3) There are a number of factors influencing the concentration of oxygen, and if 1owered substanth.lly will effect the efficiency of the leaching plant. These include: "' salinity "' temperature "'partial pressure "'oxygen consumption rate The use of pure oxygen for· cyanidation is only beneficial if oxygen is rate limiting, Conversely a slurry saturated with air (typically 5 - 8 ppm) may not be enough for maximum leach rate. The diagram below shows the maximum dissolved oxygen levels obtainable with pure oxygen and air. DISSOLVED OXYGEN (MAXIMUM) IN WATER At steady state, the rate of the cathodic reaction must equal the rate of the anodic reaction. Thus the rate of gold dissolution is dependent on both the· cyanide and oxygen concentrations. - (4) Using an average of Do/Den =· 1.5 [2] (where Do and Den are the oxygen and cyanide diffusion coefficients) the table below illustrates the maximum effective oxygen concentrations for given cyanide levels in clean water [3].
