An industrial mineral, says the Glossary of Geology, is "any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metallic ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones; one of the nonmetallics." Probably most geologists and engineers would accept this simple and straightforward definition, at least as a general statement. On analysis, however, certain anomalies crop up. For example, what is metallic and what is nonmetallic? Bauxite and ilmenite certainly qualify as metallic ores, but both are also raw materials of important nonmetallic substances; hence they are included in this book. Another anomaly is that, by common consent, the term industrial minerals may include not only rocks and minerals but also certain manufactured products, such as cement and lime, and even mixed groups of natural and artificial products, such as abrasives and refractories. Thus the central realm of the industrial minerals is clear enough, but its boundaries tend to be indefinable. Since a definition that allowed for every irregularity in the outer fringes would be excessively unwieldy, the one quoted above may be considered satisfactory. The expression industrial minerals is commonly equated with nonmetallics, and with the somewhat more precise phrase industrial minerals and rocks as in the title of this book.

The processors of Florida phosphate rock face constraints similar to those of other mineral operations--leaner ore, more complex treatment schemes and a product which sells for a penny a pound. IMC Fertilizer is a dominant producer in this market with its current operation of five processing plants. An emphasis by their management in maintaining and improving plant performance has continued unabated for some 15 years. This has resulted in a commitment to the importance of routine automatic sampling of product and in process streams, the generation of reliable assay and size distribution data, the accurate measurement of process flows, and the computerized "rendering" of this information into weekly and monthly material balances which provide consistent measures of process performance. In addition, there has been a parallel program to monitor and improve the performance of flotation reagents and to evaluate process modifications or changes in equipment. This paper will describe the evaluation techniques that have evolved over this period and indicate how the historical data base is used to identify plant problems early and help in their solution.

Arafertil's oxidized ore presents barite grades that oscillate between 5 and 12%. The barite separation plays a major role in the production of apatite concentrates for the manufacturing of phosphate fertilizers. The selectivity, via flotation, in the system barite-apatite is inherently difficult due to the similarity of the physical/chemical characteristics of these minerals. The evaluation of the relevant aspects of this separation was performed based on the determinations of the electrical surface charge of barite and apatite, the abstraction isotherms of cetyl-stearyl sodium sulfate and fatty acids soaps for barite and apatite, microflotation in a modified Hallimond tube, and flotation tests in a batch column. The results showed that the adsorption of cetyl- stearyl sodium sulfate occurs preferentially onto barite, in comparison with apatite. On the other hand, the rice bran oil soap presents similar adsorption levels onto both barite and apatite. The cetyl-stearyl sodium sulfate was selective as a barite collector in the presence of apatite, a fact that was not observed in the case of rice bran oil soap.

The Expanded Conveyor Technology, a rationalization of the conventional conveyor technology, allows us to apply the theory and principles beyond the current (perceived) limits. This was first prompted by the writer's advancements in Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyors. The introduction defines the Expanded Conveyor Technology and outlines the range of applicability for the wide variations in conventional and non-conventional conveyors. The writing deals with the theory and design of sandwich-belt, high-angle conveyors in the context of the Expanded Conveyor Technology, including the equations of friction, hugging pressure and the continuity of hugging principle; curvature constraints and criteria for tension, curvature, trough, and belt construction; and drive and tension analysis, load sharing and traction, including "derived load equivalents."

Introduction The city of Nuremberg, located in Bavaria in the Federal Republic of Germany, started building a subway in 1967. The construction operations began in a southern suburb, where no complications were encountered in the design and execution of the job. As the first subway line approached the downtown area of the city, the civil engineering challenges increased rapidly. Tunnels had to be excavated next to, or below precious historical buildings, and the work of the responsible engineers was closely watched by the public, who were very anxious about any damage to the existing beautiful old houses and churches. The job has been handled successfully to date in cooperation with the owner-designer, the geotechnical consultant and the contractors, who jointly went through a process of systematic learning and gathering of experience, and who developed a modern tunneling technique specifically tailored to the natural properties of the encountered ground conditions and the requirements of the city of Nuremberg. The application of scientific methods has been an important part of this development. Discussion by Erich U. Petersen Harbuck et al. (1990) present results of research on sulfuric acid leaching of a germanium-gallium ore and shed considerable insight on possible extraction methods for gallium and germanium. However, the presentation does not give sufficient details to evaluate the research, so some of the conclusions may not be as applicable as stated. The objective of this communication is to indicate that relevant and easily obtainable geological and technical information was omitted. Consequently, on this basis, alternative explanations for some of the data are possible. Discussed below are the omission of: • pertinent geological, mineralogical and geochemical literature; • details regarding the determination of germanium concentration in quartz by electron microprobe; and • details on the calculation of the amount of germanium locked in quartz. "These topics are important since the determination of the amount and locus of "unrecoverable, locked germanium" may have an important impact on the economics and methods of germanium extraction and the directions of future research. Harbuck et al. state that "A key to increasing germanium extraction is understanding the mineralogy of the ore." However, only two studies are cited that in some manner describe the mineralogy of the ores. In addition, both of these studies were very preliminary, of limited scope and examined very few

INTRODUCTION The Metro Rail Project is approximately a 20-mile initial portion of Southern California's planned 150-mile transit network and will provide transit service to the dense population and employment centers within the Los Angeles regional core. The Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) has defined, as the first segment, a 4.4-mile five station rail line, which extends from the yard and shop area near Union Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. Design packages are completed; utilities are currently being relocated; demolition is underway; early construction contracts have been awarded; and construction has started. This paper will describe the current status of the Metro Rail design and construction, after first briefly reviewing its history, objectives, and main components. PROJECT HISTORY The California State Legislature created the SCRTD in 1964 with a legislative mandate to design, construct, and operate a rapid transit system within the Los Angeles County area. To obtain the monies required to support this program, in June, 1974, Proposition 5 was passed by a solid majority, allowing a portion of state gasoline taxes to be used for rapid transit development. This measure provided a local source of funds for SCRTD to begin its rail rapid transit development program in Los Angeles.

Determining whether a railroad locomotive will skid under varying conditions is a fairly routine, pervasive problem. However, some of the equations provided are wrong, others are at best murky. All require correction or clarification. Skidding during heavy braking is a crucial safety problem, possibly resulting in loss of control and collision. It can also be an economic detriment, ruining wheels and tracks and, by inhibiting acceleration, causing reduced full-speed times. While skidding is less likely for rubber-tired equipment, a comparable problem exists for tractor-trailers operating on poor surfaces. The primary reference is to the SME Mining Engineering Handbook (pp. 14-11, Eqs. 7 and 8), which is taken as authoritative and normative (Brantner, 1973). Fundamentally, the physical weight of the locomotive can never be negative (-). However, based on this reference it can be negative on adverse grades, during braking (Eq. 7), and on favorable grades, whether accelerating or braking (Eq. 8). Additionally, it should be noted that the term rW should be Rw. To avoid having the locomotive weight turn out negative, "absolute value" brackets must enclose the right-hand expression of both equations. Also, the weight of locomotive can be greater than the right-hand side value introducing the common "greater than or equal to" symbol (>_). One of the major objectives of cost analysis is to enable the manager to predict the financial outcomes of decisions. To accomplish this, the future costs and benefits of alternative courses of action must be determined. If care- fully used, information about past financial performance can be helpful in this analysis despite the fact that, by definition, financial reporting information is historical. In many cases, both revenues and costs need to be estimated for decision- making. For the production manager, additional revenue is a result of increased throughput or recovery of valuable material from the stream of mined material. A reduction in operating cost, although similar to a revenue increase in its financial impact, is estimated using slightly different techniques. Generally, the estimation of cost is more difficult than the estimation of revenue. Most cost estimates have two components: an estimate of fixed costs and an estimate of variable costs. As discussed in chapter 5, the total cost of an activity during a specified period can be expressed as: Total cost = (Variable cost per unit of activity) x (Units of activity) + Fixed cost or TC = VX+F

Celestine (celestite) (SrSO4), the primary ore mineral of strontium, is present in the DeQueen Limestone Member of the Trinity Group (Lower Cretaceous) in Sevier, Howard, and Pike Counties, southwest Arkansas. Two mappable celestine beds have been identified. One bed is commonly 3-5 in. thick, but ranges up to 18 in. in thickness; the other bed is generally 2-3 in. thick. The beds are concordant within the DeQueen Limestone and were formed by precipitation from periodically restricted sea water. Reports concerning celestine date back to 1929, when Hugh D. Miser and A. H. Purdue mapped the geology of the DeQueen and Caddo Gap quadrangles. A small amount of celestine was produced in the early 1940s in Howard County. During 1941, the J. W. Hintze Company collected 1,500 pounds of celestine for testing purposes. In 1942 and 1943,750 test holes were drilled by the Bennett-Clark Company in Howard County. Afterward, approximately 90 tons of celestine was open-pit mined and shipped to Texas for processing. Since then, no mining of celestine in Arkansas has taken place.

This paper discusses laboratory evaluation of a tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA) developed by Michigan Technological University (MTU) under contract to the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus dilutes diesel exhaust and measures the concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), CO, C02, NO and NO2 at known dilution ratios. The EMA was evaluated by side-by-side comparison of its measurements with those by laboratory grade instruments. During the preliminary laboratory evaluation concentrations of DPM, CO and CO2 were measured. The concentrations of CO and CO2 measured by the EMA were usually within ±14 pct of laboratory-measured values for CO and ±20 pct for CO2. EMA DPM concentrations correlated well (r = 0.96) with the laboratory values, but were 29 pct lower on average. The CO and C02 differences were observed to be related to the method of calculating the EMAs' dilution ratio and the difference in DPM concentrations is attributed to thermophoretic and/or condensation losses related to the EMA's unheated sample probe. Preliminery analysis of data obtained with a heated sampling probe and modifications in the sampling procedures have indicated reduced variability in DPM and in the calculated dilution ratios.

The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is the largest tunneling program in the history of the metropolitan Chicago area (Figure 1). Between September 1976 and September 1977, rock tunnel contracts having an estimated cost of approximately $420 million will be advertised. During the past six months, the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) has awarded contracts for 16.5 miles of rock tunnels in diam of from 9 ft to 30 ft having a total bid price of $120,261,750. RECENT CONTRACT AWARDS Addison-Wilmette Tunnel $63,140,480 Upper Des Plaines #20 Tunnel 35,749,664 Upper Des Plaines #21 Tunnel 21,371,607 Addison-Wilmette Tunnel The first contract was advertised in September 1975. This contract, described as the Addison-Wilmette Tunnel, runs from Wilmette Harbor at Lake Michigan under the North Shore Channel to Addison Street in the City of Chicago, a distance of 10 miles. The contract calls for constructing approximately 27,750 linear ft of 30 ft ID and 24,020 linear ft of 22 ft ID unlined rock tunnels, excavation of two construction shafts, and the excavation of 32 drop shafts of various diam. Two hundred ninety-three companies were notified of this contract being advertised, 70 companies took out contract specifications and 3 companies ultimately submitted bids. Exxon Minerals Co. was exploring for mineral deposits in Precambrian terranes of the US portion of the Lake Superior region in the late 1960s. Exploration drilling and other activities had been concentrated on massive sulfide prospects in northeastern Minnesota, but general exploration studies and competitor scouting were conducted in other areas of the region. These activities drew attention to Wisconsin in 1969 when it became apparent that Bear Creek Mining Co. had made a discovery near Ladysmith in the northwestern part of the state. Observation of their drill hole pattern suggested that a massive sulfide deposit, since named the Flambeau deposit (Schwenk, 1977), had been found. With this background, Exxon initiated an exploration program for Precambrian massive sulfide deposits in northern Wisconsin in 1970 (Figs. 1 and 2). Northern Wisconsin is extensively mantled by Pleistocene glacial drift and bedrock outcrop is sparse. Other than iron mines in the extensive iron formations along the Wisconsin-Michigan border and Jackson County, no significant mineral deposits were known in the Wisconsin portion of the Precambrian Shield until the discovery of the Flambeau deposit. Until the mid-1970s, the only specific published literature on the Wisconsin Precambrian consisted of old outcrop locations and descriptions in journals of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (Chamberlain, 1882; [ ] Weidman, 1907; Hotchkiss, 1915) and the summary maps of Dutton and Bradley (1970).

Reserve audits have increased in recent years as more companies, especially juniors, enter the ranks of producers. Corporate and individual investors are seeking corroboration of stated reserves. The reserve audit satisfies this need. An audit assures investors that the reserves, as presented, are a reasonable and accurate approximation of the quantity and grade of the economically viable material present. The reserve audit verifies that there are no fundamental errors in logic, style or the data base, and that the reserves, as given, may be used for mine planning or economic forecasting. Reserves that pass an audit may be used with confidence in preparing cash flow projections and in deriving net present value or internal rate of return on any given project. This article describes what a consultant does while performing the reserve audit. In performing an audit there are four general areas of concern that must be checked: definitions, parameters, data and procedures. In each of these, the auditor must convince himself that the reserve study has complied with governmental regulations and guidelines, professional standards and industrial practices. Any deviation from these norms must be identified and its effect upon the appropriateness of the reserves evaluated. By concluding that a reserve study passes his audit, the reviewer is stating that there are no fundamental errors in logic or style and that spot checks have revealed no substantive errors in procedure or mechanics. The responsibility for the reserves remains with the entity that compiled the original study.

The sandstone type Devladivske uranium deposit is located within the limits of Eocene pale-ovalley filled with alluvial sediments. Mineralization with uranium content up to 0.1% forms several ore beds divided by redox barriers. In the period 1962-1983 the deposit has been exploited over an area of 918000m2 by in situ leaching (ISL) using drillholes with a depth between 35 and 100m. During mining operation about 200,000 t of H2SO4, 6,300 t of HNO3, and 15,000 t of NH4NO3, have been pumped in the ore body. In 1983, the groundwater pollution aureole had a length of 4.5 km and a width of 400-600 m. There is a hydraulic connection between the uranium-bearing aquifer and both the upper and lower ones. The technological solutions used for ISL caused partial contamination of these horizons. After mining completion, dilution of the residual technological solutions with "pure" natural waters took place through gaps in impermeable sediments between aquifer horizons. Calculation of self-purification process kinetics shows that the sulfate ion pollution aureole will disappear approximately after 120-150 years at a distance up to 2.0-2.5 km from the western margin of the deposit. This means that there is no risk for contamination of the river Saksagan? that flows at a distance of 17km from the deposit.

A comprehensive critical review on the subject of sulfates-induced swelling behavior of lime-treated soils is presented in this study. Starting with the description of a well documented case study, the mechanisms behind the swelling behavior and the factors that affect this behavior are discussed. Then, the major experimental methods of sulfates content determination are briefly presented. Finally, an attempt is made to categorize sulfates level and equivalent risk for civil infrastructure. The paper indicates that limited work has been done, not only on identifying safe conditions for use of chemical stabilizers in presence of sulfate rich soils, but also on developing materials and methods to avoid, or at least mitigate, the problem.

Controlled-blasting experiments in small development drifts were conducted at CANMET's Experimental Mine in 1992 and 1993. The objective of these experiments was to develop suitable controlled-blasting techniques for small development headings that are drilled by jackleg with 32-mm-diam holes. The experimentation was also aimed at providing insight into blast-damage mechanisms. Particular attention was given to the physical-mechanical properties of the rock and the rock-mass structural data. The drift faces were approximately 2.4 by 2.4 m (7.9 x 7.9 ft) in size with 36 to 43 holes drilled to a depth of 2.4 m (7.9 ft). Cartridged water gels, emulsions and semigelatin dynamite were used in the cuts and as primers, ANFO was used as the main explosive and decoupled 19-mm (0.75 in.) diam semigelatin dynamite charges were used in the perimeter holes. Smooth-blasting techniques and presplitting were tested in the underground mine. All of the blasts were monitored with a multichannel blast-vibration monitor, to which was attached sets of high frequency geophones and accelerometers. These experiments demonstrated the efficiency of controlled-blasting techniques for the reduction of blast damage and also demonstrated the need to improve the safety and efficiency of using explosives.

Today's mining industry faces many challenges. Perhaps none is more important than the challenge of improving our industry's public image. Opinion polls document public concern for a clean and safe environment. As part of that public, the mining industry must share that goal. The public is now the most powerful environmental group in society. And the public wants the environment to be protected. In May 1989, Edgar S. Woolard, chairman of DuPont, spoke to the American Chamber of Commerce. He said that industry's continued existence "requires that we excel in environmental performance and that we enjoy the non-objection - indeed even the support of the people and governments in the societies where we operate." In effect, Woolard called for "corporate environmentalism." He defined it as an "attitude and a performance commitment that places environmental stewardship fully in line with public desires and expectations." Environmentalism is no longer a fringe activity, but rather is now clearly in the mainstream. How can we meet public expectations and improve our image as an industry? One of the best ways is to plan, design and operate our mine facilities with environmental responsibility and social concern. The Mineral Hill Mine provides a good case study of a facility that has made this commitment. The project used an inter-disciplinary, multiagency task force, citizen advisory groups and engineering and design considerations. As a result, Mineral Hill achieved cost-effective permitting. At the same time, the operation demonstrated effective "corporate environmentalism."

The number and type of trucks and shovels used are two important factors in determining the optimal design parameters of an open-pit mining system. The characteristics of the arrival and service-time distributions of the trucks determine the performance measures of a truck-shovel system when it is modeled as a closed queuing network. In all of the previous analytical queuing studies of truck-shovel systems, trucks are assumed to be identical with respect to their arrival and service-time distributions. This assumption, although desirable for reducing computational difficulties, causes either underestimation or overestimation of the performance measures, depending on the number and types of equipment used in the model. The relative error in performance measures could be significant when the number of different types of trucks and shovels is large. In this paper, an analytical method is proposed to model the truck-shovel system as a multiple-class closed queuing network. This approach provides the capability of estimating system performance measures for planning purposes when the truck fleet is not necessarily composed of identical trucks. An example of truck-shovel systems is presented to show how the incorporation of different types of trucks affects performance measures.

Face ignitions occurring during longwall mining are increasing each year and are expected to continue to increase as deeper and gassier seams are mined. Effective methane monitoring strategies are needed to supplement techniques developed either to control the ignition sources or to dilute the gas to an acceptable concentration. Present monitoring strategies do not always detect dangerous concentrations as rapidly as they should. In a number of instances, dangerous concentrations have been observed at the shearer, but are diluted to acceptable levels when measured at the tailgate monitoring location. To effectively monitor and control methane concentrations, methane liberation and emission patterns must be identified. This need has led to a joint research effort between the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology and the United States Bureau of Mines. By combining the knowledge and experience of both organizations, the methane hazard facing underground longwall operations can be addressed more effectively. A comprehensive plan was developed to monitor methane levels throughout the panel and for an entire longwall mining cycle. In June-July 1986, a case study was performed at the Cape Breton Development Corporation's Lingan colliery in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This initial study was performed on two advancing longwall panels. Methane concentrations and flow patterns from this study are described in this report. A similar study is planned on a retreating longwall panel.
