Thiosulfate offers a nontoxic alternative to cyanide for processing gold ores. The mechanism of leaching gold using ammoniacal thiosulfate solution is driven by the Cu(II)-Cu(I) redox couple and is complicated by competing ligands such as NH3 and S2O32; It is shown that an understanding of the copper speciation and sulfur speciation is required to optimize this system. This paper presents Eh-pH and speciation diagrams for varying concentrations of Cu(II), S2O32- and NH3 and discusses the conditions under which various copper and sulfur species are stable.

Iron ores may be upgraded by flotation of iron oxides or siliceous gangue using either cationic or anionic collectors. The electrostatic mechanism of adsorption can account for the complex chemistry involved. In industrial practice, only cationic silica flotation is used at present in North America. Some of the seemingly paradoxical phenomena of cationic silica flotation behaviors in meeting the demand for low silica concentrates are reviewed.

The relationship between bauxite and energy has two distinct aspects. On the one hand, since virtually all of the bauxite that is mined winds up as aluminum metal, the economic health and future of the bauxite industry and of the bauxite-producing countries depend on the continuing vigour and competitiveness of aluminum against alternative metals and materials. The price of aluminum is, in turn, particularly dependent on the price of energy. Hence, the need for bauxite is ultimately affected by the price of energy. The second aspect relates to location of the bauxite industry. There is no shortage of bauxite resources in the world. For various reasons, as we shall see, there is a growing tendency toward the integration of bauxite mining, bauxite refining and aluminum smelting in those countries that have the resources both of bauxite and of energy necessary to support the entire production chain. Thus, the availability of attractive energy supplies will increasingly favour development of bauxite mining: the traditional export of bauxite as a simple raw material is likely to diminish in relative terms. In short, both the amount of bauxite mined and where this mining will take place are related to energy considerations. Let us first have a brief look at the four basic activities that are involved in our integrated operations: A. The bauxite is mined and moved to an ore plant. This step does not require more than relatively modest amounts of energy normally associated with excavation, loading and shipping of any bulk material. We need about four or five tonnes of bauxite for every tonne of metal produced.

Information for mine planning requires to be close spaced, if compared to the grid used for exploration and resource assessment. The additional samples collected during quasi-mining are frequently located in the same pattern of the original diamond drill holes net but closer spaced. This procedure is not the best in mathematical sense for selecting a location. The impact of an additional information to reduce the uncertainty about the parameter been modelled is not the same everywhere within the deposit. Some locations are more sensitive in reducing the local and global uncertainty than others. This study introduces a methodology to select additional sample locations based on stochastic simulation. The procedure takes into account data variability and their spatial location. Multiple equally probable models representing a geological attribute are generated via geostatistical simulation. These models share basically the same histogram and the same variogram obtained from the original dataset. At each block belonging to the model a value is obtained from the n simulations and their combination allows one to access local variability. Variability is measured using an uncertainty index proposed. This index was used to map zones of high variability. A value extracted from a given simulation is added to the original dataset from a zone identified as erratic in the previous maps. The process of adding samples and simulation is repeated and the benefit of the additional sample is evaluated. The contribution of an extra sample was evaluated locally, globally and in terms of variation in total measured resources. The procedure showed to be robust and theoretically sound, mapping zones where the additional information is most beneficial. A case study using coal seam thickness illustrates the method.

The transfer of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of collector molecules to the surface of mineral crystals is an excellent method for the study of collector adsorption phenomena and is of particular significance in the understanding and development of improved flotation separations. The fatty acid/fluorite and amine/sylvite potation systems were investigated by the Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS) examination of transferred LB monolayers of collector molecules at the surfaces of the mineral crystals. The [ir]-A isotherm study of fatty acid and amine, typical anionic and cationic collectors, showed the different packing trends dependent upon the pH and/or type of subphase. This result clearly reflects the effect of pH on compound formation and dissociation of the collector molecules. Identification of the collector adsorption state and confirmation of the validity of the FT-IR/IRS adsorption density equation were included in this research effort. This allowed for a detailed discussion of collector adsorption phenomena. As a result of these experiments, it is possible to relate the hydrophobic character of a surface to the nature of the adsorbed collector structure and thus describe flotation behavior in greater detail. For example, it appears that in the case of oleate/ fluorite the equivalent of an LB monolayer can form spontaneously during adsorption from solution, and this structure is known as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Such a state is significantly more hydrophobic than the oleate structure which forms on the calcite surface at an equivalent adsorption density.

In many cases, the reuse of process water in flotation plants is desirable both for plant operating reasons and for environmental protection. The main advantages are better housekeeping of fresh water and process chemicals together with the reduction of polluting species to the environment. There are however a number of problems involved in the use of recycled process water. The main problem is that recycling sometimes has a deterious effect on the process and can occur months after the start of water recycling. The Division of Mineral Processing of Luleå University of Technology has been conducting experiments on recycling of process water at various sulphide plants in Sweden for over ten years. The experiments have been carried out in pilot- and full industial scale, in collaboration with the mining companies operating the plants. Until 1988 investigations were carried out in four different sulphide plants. The objectives of the experiments were: first to document differences in the composition of the process water during recycling; secondly to investigate any changes in the pulp chemistry of the flotation circuits wich may be due to the influence of recycled water; and lastly to establish critical levels, if any. of the parameters measured. While conducting experiments of this kind several things have to be kept in mind. Normally, recycling is done by using tailings pond water as process water. This means that time effects are important, because of the time lag between water input in the tailings pond and the reclaim of that water back to the plant. As will be shown, the

A huge number of Global Positioning System (GPS) based "Total Station" are playing good roles in India for accurate and quick surveying . The GPS based real time Mine Management and Truck Dispatching System for optimization of productivity is being installed in the Panchpatmali opencast bauxite mines of India. This paper dealt in depth on GIs and GPS and their present roles in the Indian mining scenario.

Mining in semi-arid climates can produce environmental impacts that will not begin for hundreds of years, but once started, may continue for thousands of years. Pit lakes may eventually exceed toxicity thresholds as metals are evaporatively concentrated, and slow unsaturated flow through acid-generating waste can eventually load several kg-SO4/m2-yr to underlying water tables. U.S. regulations are poorly equipped to respond to delayed and long-term environmental impacts, delaying permits as operators and regulators grapple with uncertainty. Improved uncertainty analysis, additional long-term mitigation options, and explicit regulatory guidance offer solutions to this dilemma.

Over the last two decades, the mining industry has spent considerable time and effort in installing sophisticated control systems (including expert systems) to regulate and improve the performance of AG/SAG mills. Yet the need for these systems is often overlooked – unmeasured and uncontrolled variation in the feed material. With AG/SAG mill technology replacing rod and ball mills as primary grinding equipment, the need for careful and thoughtful feed preparation has gone. To maximise mill throughput, operations need to better understand the ore characteristics affecting AG/SAG mill performance. Industrial operating data will be used to illustrate these ideas and concepts. It is often quite surprising which ore characteristics that are the most influential on mill throughput.

For efficient control of particle size in a wet grinding circuit, three alternative methods for monitoring pro- duct particle size are available. These methods are based on: 1. Ultrasonic wave absorption. 2. Low-angle forward scattering of a laser beam. 3. Inferential sizing techniques. The relative advantages and disadvantages of each technique are discussed. A particle size monitor can be used on a single grinding line to control the product particle size. To minimize the number of particle size monitors at an operation consisting of many similar grinding lines, a portable multi-stream on-line analyzer can be used. The paper outlines the design and the operational characteristics of the portable multi-stream online analyzer.

With increasing interest in the physical cleaning of fine coal, there is a need for extension of the sink-float analysis procedure to finer sizes. Problems arise, however, in ensuring complete dispersion of the particles in the heavy liquids. A procedure has been developed in which surfactants are wed as dispersing agents, and solids concentration is minimized (using a simple formula to estimate the minimum weight needed for statistical reliability). Using centrifuges to increase separation rates and subsieve particle size analysis of the specific gravity fractions, a complete size-specific gravity distribution can be obtained. Analyses have been performed on coal samples as fine as - 10 µm.

In April 1990, the Homestake Gold Mine embarked on a five year, $US 23 million underground drifting and drilling program to explore promising ore targets north of the current mine. This paper describes the ventilation and air-conditioning system that was installed for the 4m x 4m x 5.2 km (ultimately) drift, which is being driven at about 8m per day in 48OC (118.5 F) crystalline rock. Design parameters are described first. Differences in South African, Canadian and U.S. drift ventilation and civil tunneling techniques proved interesting. Details are then given on equipment selection, installation and performance. Costs are included. Special note is made of safety considerations for a long, dead-end drift.

This article examines some important trends in East-West trade in non-fuel mineral products, in particular the recent decline in Eastern bloc exports of such products. It relates this decline to an improvement in Soviet terms of trade; a deterioration of geological and locational conditions in Soviet mineral production; an increased integration of the CMEA-countries based on a regional pooling of resources; and a surge in demand for mineral commodities in Eastern countries coupled with a slowdown in Western economic growth. Finally, it evaluates to what extent these determinants may evolve in a different direction during the eighties and thus foster East-West mineral trade. Eastern1 bloc trade in mineral products is a subject of perennial interest in the West. When exports increase, there is much talk of the dangers of dependence on the East for critical fuels and materials. When imports increase, talk turns to the danger of Soviet dependence on Western supplies. A common fear is that the USSR may not only seek to meet its own resource needs but also deny the access of Western countries to these resources. This paper, like three other recent additions to the lite5ature on Soviet foreign trade of commodities2, tries to put matters in clearer and cooler perspective. The first section evaluates the structure of East-West mineral trade and tries to identify some important trends of recent years. The second section relies on supply and demand factors, as well on the Comecon connection (the intra-Council for Mutual Economic Assistance mineral cooperation) to explain why there has been a reversal in the mineral trade trend since the end of the seventies. The last section evaluates the factors which could stimulate East-West mineral trade in the future.

The electrokinetic and flotation behavior of the green alga Chlorella vulgaris was studied in the absence and presence of Pb(II), Al(III) and flotation collectors. It was found that the presence of Al(III) is necessary for good flotation of the organism, whether or not Pb(II) is present, when dodecylammonium chloride or sodium dodecylsulfate is used as collector. Best flotation using dodecylamine is at about pH 8, and best flotation when using sodium dodecylsulfate is at about pH 4. It appears because of the small size of the organisms that the Al(III) is necessary for flocculation to enhance bubble-cell contact and C. vulgaris removal from water. When N-dodecyl-2-aminopropionic acid is used as collector, good flotation occurs at about pH 4 without the addition of Al(III).

This paper discusses some common human and organizational barriers to enter- prise integration. It proposes how to develop the organizational and human' networks to match the capabilities of the technical networks which are being' implemented. Ten practical considerations are then presented for consideration in the executive suite in addressing the human side of implementing the computer integrated enterprise.

The reaction mechanism for the cathodic decomposition of pyrrhotite in deoxygenated solutions at natural, near neutral pH levels was studied using potential and cyclic voltammetric measurements. Reaction products on the pyrrhotite surfaces were examined by Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by analyzing the voltammograms for the electron balance of the reactions. Surface properties of the pyrrhotite/solution interface were characterized using an ac impedance technique. The parameters of an equivalent circuit were determined by the nonlinear least-squares fit (NLLSF) technique. The effect of cathodic polarization on floatability was investigated by performing microflotation tests. Possible implications to the flotation separation of chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite ores are discussed.

Under conditions of high methane content in the seams and the descending of exploitation to greater depths, methane hazard control is becoming more and more difficult. This is due both to the amount of methane released and to the technical possibilities of diluting and capturing it. The removal of excess methane from mine workings only by means of the ventilating current has become a problem. Therefore many countries designate large sums of money for research work in the field of controlling dangerous methane accumulations and for introducing this control into mining practice. In Poland the Central Mining Institute is leading in this field. Its Safety-in-Mines Institute, Barbara Experimental Mine in cooperation with collieries has recently carried out interesting investigations on the distribution of methane concentrations in gobs behind the front of longwalls mined with caving.

We have worked on several flooded pits from coal-mining activities in the former East Germany, as well as ones associated with hard- rock mining, including the B-zone pit discussed in the above technical paper. We found the paper to be a useful summary, but, unfortunately, it failed to give an adequate comparison of the physical limnology of the flooded pits, which is an essential component. While the title suggests that the primary focus of the review is physical limnology, it appears that it is essentially pit-lake chemistry being presented. Physical limnology requires that factors such as fetch, latitude, light penetration, relation to ground water table, methods of flooding and the physical shape of the pits be defined. These physical aspects of a pit interact with the chemical and biological processes taking place in it, all of which contribute to the character of a water body. Few of these physical aspects are presented, however. The conclusion that the authors reach suggests that meromixis may be a condition that would serve as an effective containment mechanism for contaminants in a pit. Although this may be desirable, such limnological conditions are not clearly supported by the data presented for any of the pits. These data should be summarized to facilitate comparison between the same structural units of the pit water - the epi- and metalimnion for example. The thermocline depth is a reflection of the physical forces mixing the water body, and pit dimensions affect these forces. Due to the use of different scales in Figs. 2 through 5, it is difficult to determine whether the thermocline is at the expected depth, because the fetch is not given. Moreover, the status of a water body cannot be determined unless measurements cover a period of at least one year, and depth profiles are completed to represent the entire depth of the pit. This shortcoming is most notable in the case of the Berkeley pit, where data are given for depths of only 20 and 35 m (66 and 115 ft), although the pit is reported to be 242 m (794 ft) deep. Limnological data to define the status of the pit water have to be collected at regular intervals, for the same parameters. The authors present temperature measurements for 1-m (3.3-ft) intervals, but fail to use that interval for other parameters, such as dissolved oxygen or, in some cases, for contaminant concentrations. Furthermore, the profiles for the deepest part of the pit display only part of the picture, because pits are rarely conical. Profiles can be considered to represent the status of a water body only after other stations in the pit have been monitored regularly and the consistency is determined. For example, fresh water, which can enter a pit at any depth, would interfere with the proposed meromictic conditions. Similarly, organic material at the bottom of a pit, such as the fish-waste deposited in the Gunnar pit, contribute to oxygen consumption. Oxygen depletion alone is not indicative of meromixis. It is interesting to note that the Dpit arsenic concentrations could possibly be slightly higher than the B-zone pit concentrations at depth, although this is difficult to determine accurately when a log scale is used for the D-pit and not for the B-zone pit. In our investigations, we noted arsenic removal in the B-zone pit bottom water, which was due to the formation of particles that are relegated to the newly forming sediment in the bottom of the pit. Particle-carrying contaminants form due to a combination of geochemical and biological factors and TSS contributed from erosion of the upper parts of the pit walls, whereas the settling out of particles from the water column is controlled by the physical conditions or turn over, for example. during ice cover in the B-zone pit. Although meromictic conditions for flooded pits may be desirable at decommissioning, this would depend largely on the physical conditions of the pit, because, under no circumstances, would this water be of desirable ground-water quality. Under meromictic conditions, acidity, if an environmental issue, may be reduced by microbial acid-neutralizing activity, and several heavy metals may form more or less stable sulphitic compounds. These may stay suspended in the water if conditions are such that they are not relegated to the sediments, i.e., in the absence of turnover. These processes do not take place in meromictic conditions only, but meromixis does require autochthonous and/or allochthonous organic substrate supplies, which are generated under aerobic conditions. An overcast is a form of air bridge which permits one air current to pass another without mixing. It is an essential and indispensable ventilation device for underground air distribution in horizontal mineral deposits. Overcasts are also a major source of shock pressure loss under- ground. However, a well thought out overcast plan, and a well constructed overcast, will give minimum shock loss, which in turn can save money (Tien, 1986). So far, most research on shock losses has been concentrated on splits and junctions, and bends and turns, or on underground regulators. Practically nothing could be found in the literature regarding losses caused by overcasts (see reference on shock losses). In this investigation, shock losses are quantified for an overcast with different configurations, which will give useful clues toward an aerodynamically designed overcast.
