This paper describes a study of the influence of non-normal loading on the indentation behaviour of single bit-teeth. Indentation experiments have been performed on a soft, isotropic limestone using both sharp and blunt 60 degree wedge-shaped indentors constrained to penetrate the rock at 0, 15, and 30 degrees to the rock surface normal. For both sharp and blunt indentors, the normal force required to produce a given normal penetration decreased as the offset of the penetration direction from the rock surface normal increased. The crater volume produced by a given normal penetration with the sharp indentor was largely independent of the penetration direction. In contrast, the crater volume produced by the blunt indentor was increased markedly by non-normal penetration at small penetration depths, because the threshold penetration for chip formation decreased with non-normal loading. The crater volume produced by a given normal force was significantly increased by non-normal penetration, and this increase was particularly pronounced with the blunt indentor. The energy required to form unit crater volume was correspondingly reduced by non-normal indentor penetration. A simple method for predicting the reduction in the rock's resistance to chip formation is outlined, which is supported by the experimental data. The implications of these findings for rotary drilling are considered.

Mineral exploration is a sequential information gathering process. Primary exploration programs filter favorable areas through a series of geological, geochemical, and geophysical tests resulting in the discovery of mineral occurrences. The most favorable of these discoveries provides economic justification for a delineation drilling program. The purpose of delineation drilling is to provide information for estimating relevant physical characteristics of the mineral occurrence. These estimates are used to evaluate the exploration project and, eventually, the economics of mine development. Delineation drilling normally completes the exploration process. If the assessed economic characteristics of the delineated occurrence provide justification for mine development and production, an economic mineral deposit is the end result of the exploration process. Subsequently, a development drilling program is initiated to obtain the necessary data for detailed mine planning. The delineation drilling stage is in itself a sequential investment process. As delineation information accumulates, the reliability of geological estimates is improved and, thus, the uncertainty associated with the assessment of profitability criteria is reduced. Delineation drilling should continue as long as the marginal benefits, which result from improving the reliability of profitability criteria, exceed the marginal costs associated with the additional drilling.

Colony Development Operation is a joint venture currently consisting of four active members; The Oil Shale Corporation (TOSCO); Ashland Oil Inc.; Shell Oil Company and Atlantic Richfield Company, operator of the project. The initial efforts on the Colony project began in the spring of 1965. Pilot mining and semi-works engineering programs continued, in phases, to completion in the fall of 1972 when commercialization of oil shale was deemed realistic. Since that time, Colony efforts have been directed toward evaluation of the data collected during the semi-works operation and in designing a commercial operation. In October of 1974, Colony announced: "because of economic and national energy policy uncertainties it was suspending plans to start construction of a commercial oil shale plant on private lands in northwestern Colorado, scheduled for spring of 1975."

The Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes of the Wind River Indian Reservation, Wyoming are interested in developing their industrial mineral resources. The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Division of Energy and Mineral Resources (DEMR) is assisting the tribes in evaluating the potential of their industrial mineral prospects for development. Gypsum occurs on both sides of the Owl Creek Mountains in the basal portion of the Jurassic Gypsum Springs Formation. The gypsum resources that are being evaluated crop out along the northern flank of the Owl Creek Mountains in the Sweetwater basin, a small topographic sub-basin of the Big Horn Basin. From October 1998, to April 1999, DEMR personnel mapped, sampled, and drilled the southcentral butte within the Sweetwater basin. Samples were analyzed for free and combined water, and major mineral oxides to determine gypsum purity. Gypsum purity averaged 93.6 percent for surface samples and 95.1 percent for drill core samples. The basal portion of the Gypsum Springs Formation is comprised of several beds of gypsum up to 9 feet (2.7 m) thick separated by 0.5 to 2.0 foot (0.15 to 0.61 m) thick lenses of siltstone and limestone. Overall gypsum in the formation ranges from 35 to 90 feet (11 to 27 m) in thickness. A resource of approximately 7 million short tons (st) (6.4 million metric tons [mt]) has been identified.

The next 13 years gave me an education that anyone, then or now, would well envy. W.T. Reid had founded Belmont School along the lines of Groton and, as at Groton, he sent many graduates to Harvard. He obtained excellent teachers and maintained as strict a discipline as the independent nature of the western students would stand. With a beautiful location in an unspoiled little valley in the foot- hills of the Coast Range there was every chance for walks and expeditions. The years at Belmont were good ones. My closest friends were Harold Jordan and Lewis Hackett. Lewis was son of the military director at the school. With half a dozen other very young inmates we early won the sobriquet of "The Dirty Dozen." Sliding down a steep muddy hill on barrel staves helped us earn the name. An inherited shyness exaggerated my sensitivity at being a "teacher's boy" and this prevented a close association with the wilder western boys who made up most of the schoolmates. Trapping wildcats and coyotes in the brush-covered hills and taking long walks gave me plenty to do. I had grown too fast and when I went to college was 6 ft 3 in. tall and weighed only 145 lb-hardly a respectable bean pole. I was only two months past 16 when I left for Harvard. The long summer vacations were happy ones. Most of them were spent in the high mountains, and even when I was ten years old I could keep up with anyone on long steep climbs. I learned to handle a rowboat during our stays at Lakeside, a rustic resort at the south- east corner of Lake Tahoe that could then be reached only by the steamer that made a dally trip around the Lake. An airborne dust cloud is an ensemble of particles of varied size, density, shape and states of aggregation. An understanding and quantifying of the dispersion and deposition of the dust generated in mines is essential to the development of measures for reducing worker exposure to dust. In coal mining, the major portion of the dust is generated during the cutting of coal using a shearer or a continuous miner. The major phenomenon affecting ambient concentration is the deposition of dust. Particle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian and eddy diffusion and inertial impaction. The three major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. The mechanisms determining particle deposition are size dependent. From a review of the literature, there appears to be a knowledge gap in the understanding of the deposition phenomena in mine airways. In order to obtain a better understanding of the deposition of dust for various particle sizes, and to develop a set of data for evaluating predictive mathematical models for dust-flow in mines, a series of dust flow experiments was performed under controlled conditions in mine airways. It appears that the deposition data generally follow the theoretical behavior of dust based on the combined effect of diffusional and gravitational deposition. In this paper, the findings of the study on the deposition of dust in mine airways and its dependence on size, velocity and concentration are discussed. A set of deposition equations that could be used to determine the approximate deposition at various points in a mine airway are presented.

In June of 2002 Hilti North America received the first MSHA permissible approval for usage of a powder actuated tool device in a gassy mine atmosphere. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implementation of this commonly utilized tool technology in the construction industry, to the underground gassy mining industry over the course of the last 5 years. Prior to June of 2002, underground gassy mining industry had attached materials such as ventilation curtains, power cables, communication cables, signage, and other materials by either manually driving individual spads or nails into the mine roof or rib or by attachment to existing roof bolt bearing plates. The Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool is portable, durable, and lightweight (4.5 pounds). The Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool system is powered by Hilti .27 caliber permissible explosive boosters. The energy force of the Hilti .27 booster?s acts on a captive piston principle in the Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool, that applies the setting force for the direct fastening to the individual fastener chosen for the application by the end user. Each year Hilti can be called upon by MSHA to provide booster materials for re-testing per our Hilti DX PAD 1/00 approval.

Fly ash and zeolite have strong absorption to cations since their porous microstructure. The porosities of fly ash and zeolite can also be increased by modification, which improves the absorption of the materials. This research showed that the effects of modified fly ash and zeolite to remove ammonia nitrogen from rainwater. The optimal reaction time, additive amount of materials, and pH value of the stormwater to remove ammonia nitrogen were experimentally determined. For modified fly ash, the optimal removal rate of ammonia nitrogen from 100 ml stormwater was 74.41% with the addition of 10.0g fly ash, 1.5 hours of the reaction time, and 8 of pH value. To the modified zeolite, the optimal removal rate of ammonia nitrogen was 51.22% at the reaction conditions of 2.0g of zeolite, 1 hour of reaction time, and 7 of pH value.

The Falcon concentrator is capable of separating minerals in fine size classes based on their differential density. Separation of mineral particles depends upon the fluid flow characteristics and relative movement of particles in a fluid. In the present study, a fluid flow characteristic inside the Falcon concentrator was established through experimentation and modeling. The Falcon concentrator has two fluid entry points: (a) Fluid entering through gravity assisted feeding system and (b) Fluid entering through the fluidized hole on the concentrator wall. In order to identify the role of fluid entering the concentrator, a tracer was injected into the system. As per the tracer based experimentation, it was established that fluid entering through the gravity based feeding system is responsible for thin flowing film formation in the stratification zone where particles are stratified based on their relative density. The momentum balance and continuity equations were simplified for a high centrifugal force field, and the fluid velocity profile was estimated inside the thin flowing film. Estimated fluid flow profiles will help to simulate the particle trajectories inside the Falcon concentrator. The influence of rotational speed, fluid flow rate, and cone angle on the fluid velocity profile were investigated. Fluid thickness over the concentrator wall is also estimated, and it is typically of the order of ~150–200 μm.

The hierarchical relationship between three broad kinds of grinding models for a spatially homogeneous, linear, time-invariant batch grinding system are first established. Limiting and asymptotic arguments for arriving at approximate but simpler models are employed in all three cases. These parsimonious models -provide alternate and, in some respects, more incisive and convenient tools for the analyses of grinding processes and simulation of comminution circuits. In the discrete-size, discrete- time class of models, a reduced mill matrix is derived, which is seemingly adequate for those grinding circuits whose identification otherwise is difficult because of limitations on the quantity of data and its quality. In discrete-size, continuous-time types of models, parameter lumping has been employed for obtaining a G-H solution which is quite accurate and exceptionally useful for graphical display of data, model verification, and parameter estimation and simulation. In continuous-size, continuous-time models, a similarity transformation is used for solving the integrodifferential equation of grinding. This solution provides a unified framework for a number of apparently diverse empirical grinding phenomena such as self-preserving behavior of ground particle size distributions and energy laws.

I would like to first summarize the relevant health information relating to the workers and general populations around uranium mining as a basis for understanding the hazards associated with these operations and their available remedies. This discussion will summarize the literature on Radon and its daughters, among the most toxic uranium decay products. Second, I will discuss waste handling in the uranium industry: past, present and future, discussing exploration, mining, and milling and the volumes of water and solid and gaseous wastes which are associated with these various phases of uranium operations. This paper will also include a discussion of the various past and present materials handling technologies and their responsiveness to the concern for uranium waste isolation. I will then conclude with a summary of recent modifications in the relevant standards as applied to uranium mining and milling. Joseph Wagoner, a research epidemiologist with the U.S. Public Health Service has summarized the literature on uranium mining and its health effects in his written testimony as a commissioned witness in British Columbia Royal Commission of Inquiry into Uranium Mining in January of 1980, entitled Uranium, The U.S. Experience: A Lesson in History.1 Briefly summarizinq his report, as early as 1546, miners of uranium bearing ores in Central Europe were reported to have unusually hiqh frequencies of fatal lung disease2. As early as 1879, the real nature of pulmonary disorders among these miners was first diagnosed to be malignant neoplasia or lung cancers. Of 655 miners dying between 1875 and 1912, 40% or 276 of these Central Europe miners died of lung cancer.4 By 1939, it was reported that lung cancer mortality rate for miners in these Central European mining districts was several times (9.7 per 1000) higher than that for similar populations in Vienna, Austria (0.34 per 1000). Thus, before uranium mining began in the U.S., there was a considerable body of information linking uranium mining to lung cancers. The U.S. experience can be summarized in Table 1 also from Wagoner's B.C. Testimony.1 This table shows that through 1978, 205 respiratory cancer deaths have been observed among white underground uranium miners in the

Various modeling techniques are available for describing ore deposits on the computer. Multiple seam coal deposits can be quite successfully modeled by using the variable block modeling method. In essence, this type of model provides an efficient method for storing the relevant data required for calculating ore reserves and for performing the mine planning. The main advantages of the variable block model over other methods for modeling irregular block or tabular deposits are: 1) The amount of data that has to be stored is minimal, i.e., the most efficient use of computer space is made since only the pertinent seam and topographic geometries need to be stored. 2) The computer logic necessary for calculating ore reserves and performing mine sequencing is relatively simple as compared to the logic that would be required for the three-dimensional block model. 3) A variable block model can be created either by starting from raw drill-hole data or by digitizing cross sections that contain the geologic interpretations. 4) Updating individual or multiple blocks can be performed with relative ease. 5) Display of the model is relatively inexpensive and easy to perform. The objective of this chapter is to describe a developed procedure as used in applying the variable block model to a specific multiple seam coal deposit. The general sequence of operations includes: (1) develop the computer model, (2) design the open-pit limits, (3) compute reserves, and (4) develop a long-range mining plan. The programs developed for this application are an expansion of MINTEC's MEDSYSTEM software. It should be noted that this is just one of many possible applications of the developed variable block model.

Mining activities have recently been taken place in Vourinos mountain, northern Greece, exploiting the so-called ?olivinite?. A representative sample was collected from this mining area. Mineralogical analysis was conducted using X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD). A thin section was prepared and analyzed under optical microscope. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) was employed for the chemical analyses of major, mi-nor and trace elements. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis system (ESEM-EDX) was also applied for the characterization of the sample. Forsterite (Mg-rich olivine) and enstatite (Mg-rich orthopyroxene) were the main mineral phases determined by XRD, with a 56% and 44% content respectively. Trace amounts of chromite spinels were also determined. Based on this characterization, the industrial rock proved to be a hartzburgite (a type of peridotite in petrological terms). Optical microscopy and ESEM-EDX provided similar observations and confirmed the above-mentioned results. XRF revealed a composition of 43.31 MgO, 44.25 SiO2, 9.98 Fe2O3, 1.40 CaO, 0.67 Al2O3, 0.22 MnO, 0.01 TiO2 and negligible amount of LOI (<0.1%). Trace elements with high concentrations were Cr (2678 ppm) and Ni (2044 ppm). The comprehensive characterization of this mining product suggested the suitability for various uses, such as refractories, foundry and slag conditioner. Additional experiments are being carried out for environmental applications, e.g. wastewater treatment.

A ground-support system for grizzly and haulage drifts was tested in Magma Copper Co.&apos;s San Manuel mine. Eight two-piece, wide- flange steel sets were erected in a ventilation drift on the 2315 grizzly level. The sets were lagged with three different materials and back- packed with pea gravel and sand. The pillar on either side of the drift support system was instrumented with stressmeters and rock-bolt load cells, the backfill with pressure cells, and the steel sets with load cells. Results indicate a better survival rate than with typical monolithic concrete.

This paper reviews various bauxite classification schemes with respect to the differences in texture, composition and geological associations of the deposits. It demonstrates that a techno-economic classification, based on: a) associated rock type - lateritic versus karstic, b) content of aluminum ore minerals - gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore, and c) gangue minerals (iron oxides etc.) has a geological basis with natural cut-off points for the bauxite types identified. Thus, this scheme is seen as applicable to bauxite resources. It also provides a basis for their rational exploitation taking into consideration the long-term interests of both the bauxite producing and consuming countries. Against this background, the industrial mineral or non-metallurgical grades of bauxite are seen as localised and relatively rare occurrences. Their consumption should, therefore, be aimed toward the specific (hence more remunerative) products as indicated by the bauxite characteristics.

The ability to link geological sections on a graphics screen to form three dimensional geology representation was implemented at Kidd Creek in 1987. This technique affords an opportunity to optimize metal estimation in ore at the Kidd Creek copper, zinc and silver mine, by applying enhanced interpretation methods. On a series of geological sections varieties of ore are outlined. These are linked from section to section to form polyhedra which closely simulate the three dimensional shapes of the different ore types referred to as mintypes. The orebodies are divided into zones, referred to as domains, that approximate the function of variograrns, for which&apos; preferential continuity of mineralization has been estimated for distances in the width, strike and dip directions. These distances define ellipsoidal volumes of influence. The domains are also linked into polyhedra. Both types, coded by ore variety and zone, are mapped into the block model. Tonnage and metal values are calculated for ten-foot cubical cells of the block model by any of several estimation methods under domain control. In estimating the metal grades for a cell the predetermined search ellipse is applied to select only those drill hole assays of the same mintype as the cell designation. Once grade estimations have been determined for the cubical cells comprising the model, a wide range of stored information can be viewed. For example, in plan at any row elevation or on vertical section at any azimuth, as either printed values for the cells or as contoured data. This flexibility is of particular value in checking and refining the geological interpretation to better conform to ore types and grades actually mined. Combined with three dimensional geological modelling, and correctly chosen domains, the use of mintypes implants essential geological control into the system and prevents assays for one ore type from affecting grade estimation in adjacent ore types. The three dimensional geological modelling and block model segments provide information which is effectively applied to the stope design, production, planning and control parts of the system.

G. GREGORY BRYAN 33.1-DEFINITIONS 1. Engineering-Engineering may be defined simply as the science and art of making materials and energy serve the purposes of mankind. There are many fields of engineering, each with specialized branches. The basic fields are: civil, mechanical, electrical and chemical. Others may be specialized phases of one of these or a combination of two or more of them. Mining engineering, for example, requires a working knowledge of construction, mechanics, electricity, metallurgy, geology, accounting and economics, in addition to mining techniques or methods. Mining geology and geological engineering involve rocks and their structure and the forces that act upon them, and chemistry, physics and mechanics also are important to practitioners in these fields. Metallurgical engineering requires chemistry and physics but also a working knowledge of mechanics and electricity. The fields of engineering with which this section are concerned are those primarily involved in the finding, mining, processing and utilization of the natural mineral resources of the earth. They include geology, mining engineering and metallurgy, each with several specialized subdivisions. 2. The Engineer-The engineer is an individual who has had specialized training to qualify him to practice the profession of engineering. The term engineer is used here in its broadest sense to include such professions as certain applied branches of geology, physics and chemistry, whose practitioners may not have acquired engineering degrees but who, nevertheless, by training and experience in some area of the minerals industry, qualify under the above definition. To become a successful engineer, a person should have certain pronounced aptitudes and preferences, even before embarking upon the requisite course of training. Among the chief qualifications that the engineer-to-he must possess are: (a) a natural inclination toward mathematics and the physical sciences, and (b) intellectual and moral honesty. Among the qualities the student engineer must develop are: (a) independence of thought, open-mindedness, sound judgment and the ability to observe, deduce, plan and apply solutions, (b) the ability to articulate and convince, and (c) the ability to organize and direct the activity of others. These qualities are normally developed through sound education, followed by pro¬gressive experience. 3. The Consulting Engineer-The consulting engineer is an engineer primarily in the business of furnishing specialized advice and engineering services on an intermit¬tent, part-time or occasional basis to clients who do not have continuous or full-time need for those services. He must be able to make and take full responsibility for decisions and recom¬mendations where original thought is required. He should not be confused with the engineer, surveyor or technician who also may furnish services on an intermittent basis, such as regular periodic surveys, the overseeing of drilling programs and other such routine work as may require little original thought and planning. 33.2-THE PROFESSION OF CONSULTING ENGINEERING 33.2.1- QUALITIES REQUIRED A successful consulting engineer must first have, as a minimum, the qualities and preparation of an engineer. Webster&apos;s dictionary nearly equates portland cement with its current primary definition of cement. Although such equation may be a triumph of common usage, the confusion between the terms cement and concrete unfortunately is very widespread. Full definition of cement properly would extend to many substances, but for purposes of this chapter cement is restricted to varieties of portland cement including portland-pozzolan cement. Among the usually recited historical notes concerning cement is that it was developed by the Romans. Their use of cement in the great structures of Rome, and even in the far comers of their Empire, such as Hadrian&apos;s Wall in the north of England, testifies to the antiquity of a major cement industry. From English sources we know of John Smeaton&apos;s carefully proportioned hydraulic cement mixed in 1756 and of Joseph Aspdin&apos;s patented cement to which, in 1824, he gave the name portland cement. (He claimed that his cement mortar looked like the famous dimension limestone quarried from the Isle of Portland on England&apos;s south coast.) The year 1971 marked the centennial of portland cement manufacture in the United States. A fair historical account of the many real contributors to the cement industry since 1756 unfortunately would be too extensive for this chapter. Development of rotary kiln practice and burning at higher temperatures clearly was the major move into today&apos;s technology. Cement manufacture is the processing of selected and prepared mineral raw materials to produce the synthetic, mineral mixture (clinker) that can be ground to a powder having the specified chemical composition and physical properties of cement. Cement making incorporates a number of distinct steps, but it is characterized by the key pyroprocessing (or burning) step, which brings about the necessary changes in the raw materials. This pyroprocessing is a chemical process. Conversion of large volumes of mineral raw materials into specification-controlled cement at relatively low cost is the objective. Statistics on the cement industry are of uneven quality. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is the principal collector of available data. These statistics can be only as good as the quality of information supplied by the reporting companies. The data perhaps most often questioned relates to productive capacity of the industry. The questions submitted by USBM are valid, nevertheless, and the information gained from them, as good as is available, is what is generally used. The Portland Cement Association also is a source of much quality information. In analyzing cement industry production rates, it is well to keep in mind that measurement of raw materials requires the reader to recognize that approximately 1.6 t of dry raw materials are required to make 1 t of clinker. This number can vary depending on the amount of kiln dust wasted. Also that to produce 1 t of portland cement required .94 to .96 t of clinker, the remainder being gypsum or anhydrite. A ton of masonry cement or pozzolanic cement re- quires considerably less clinker.

At a mine in central PA, high horizontal stresses have caused long running roof falls resulting in hazardous conditions for the miners and the premature abandonment of panels. Because of these conditions, the mine requested assistance of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in utilizing the "advance and relieve" method to mitigate the affects of horizontal stress on the mine roof. "Advance and relieve" mining involves the removal of a pillar or a portion of a pillar during development, thereby creating a cave along one side of the panel. Following cave development, the horizontal stress is relieved over the workings adjacent to the cave in the active panel. The mine has used this system in three panels with a significant reduction in stress damage and no large roof falls.
