This paper discusses grade control of ore mined at Tennessee Copper Company. Mineral zoning and the influence of mineral zoning on production grade are discussed and illustrated. In order to make this most understandable we will first briefly examine the flow sheet at Tennessee Copper to indicate the path followed by the raw material toward its various products. Then we will discuss some of the characteristics of the ore, specifically the distribution or zoning of the minerals in the ore which cause some of the grade control problems. Finally we Will discuss same of the steps that are taken to combat these problems. The flow sheet is illustrated as plate 1. The mined ore is allied to obtain 3 usable products: Copper concentrate, iron concentrate and zinc concentrate. Copper is found in the mineral chalcopyrite, CuFeS2. The Copper concentrate from the mill contains about 20% copper. These concentrates are smelter in reverberatory furnace and Pierce-Smith converter to blister copper containing 99.2% copper. Some metal is cast into 360 lb. pigs and shipped to the refinery. Some is made into shot copper and used locally to make copper sulfate. Copper sulfate is marketed from Copperhill principally in fungicides.

Introduction and Historical Background State Geological Surveys have been deeply involved in industrial minerals from their inception beginning in the first half of the 19th Century. To Massachusetts belongs the credit of having carried out the first Geological survey under state auspices on the Western Hemisphere. One of the causes leading up to this survey was. Governor Lincoln's message to the legislature of May 29, 1830, from which I quote in part: "Much knowledge of the natural history of the country would thus be gained (from a geological survey), and especially the presence of valuable ores, with the localities and extent of quarries and of coal and lime formations, objects of inquiry so essential to internal improvements and the advancement of domestic prosperity, would be discovered.". Similar phraseology is present in practically all of the initial organic acts creating the first State Surveys. High on the list of priorities for these embryo surveys was an inventory of the mineral resources of the State with particular emphasis on the industrial minerals. Prom these early beginnings, the state surveys have developed a great wealth of geological data either directly or indirectly relating to the development of mineral resources. One can gain some conception of the effort that state surveys today place on industrial minerals studies by noting the projects in which they are engaged as reported in the State Geologists Journal. The Washington State Highway Department consists of seven geographic dis¬tricts. District offices are located in Seattle, Wenatchee, Olympia, Vancouver, Yakima, Spokane and Bellevue. District is covered from the Spokane office, and is responsible for the six counties in the northeast corner of the state (Fig.l). It is bordered on the north by the International Boundary, on the south by the Snake River, on the east by the Washington - Idaho border, and on the west by a north-south line thru Lake Roosevelt. The landslides to be discussed in this paper are at Colfax, Washington, which is located in the southeast corner of the district. The town of Colfax is situated in a narrow valley eroded into the Tertiary volcanic basalts by the Delouse River. The valley walls are steep and generally colluvium mantled. State Highway 1°c, from Spokane to Colfax, descends into the valley from just north of Colfax on a bench cut into the valley wall. The highway department designed a widening project to increase the misting two lane roadway to three lanes, thus providing a passing lane for uphill traffic. The third lane was constructed as a cut section for the entire length. Construction excavation was begun at the top of the hill in silts of eolian origin. Proceeding downhill, excavation encountered three individual basalt flows with two zones of palagonite tuff separating them. The upper palagonite zone was dry, and excavation proceeded across this zone with no mishaps. The lower palagonite zone carried considerable groundwater. As excavation crossed the lower zone landsliding became contemporaneous with excavation, due to removal of toe of slope and saturated conditions. Remedial measures for landsliding consisted of designing shot rock buttresses across the palagonite zone and also the installation of horizontal drains to reduce hydrostatic pressure.

Newmont Gold Company is the largest producer of gold in North America. Accurate resource estimates are critical to planning the mining in a year of over 90,000,000 t (100,000,000 tons) of mill, leach and waste grade material, from which over 47 t (1,500,000 oz) of gold are recovered. Resource estimates are updated frequently to take advantage of new drilling, improved geologic understanding and additional production reconciliations. At Newmont Gold, indicator kriging is the primary method being used to create resource estimates. Indicator kriging (IK) is a well accepted method of resource estimation; however, many details of the IK process which are critical to producing a useful resource estimate have not been well documented. An IK model must have several characteristics in order to be a useful resource estimate: the model must take into account geologic features of the mineralization; model creation cannot require too .much time; the model must accurately reflect the effects of selective mining; the model must be stored in an easily accessible format; and the model must be useable with a variety of cutoff grades. This paper will show how Newmont Gold implements the IK process in order to achieve these goals.

INTRODUCTION The role of comminution and related unit operations in mineral processing applications is of major importance. This is especially true in terms of operating costs, since these unit operations represent the major fraction of the overall processing costs. Due to the broad scope and the large number of unit processes and machines involved, Section 3 is divided into five subsections. In Section 3A, General Aspects of Comminution, topics covered include history, terminology, particle¬size distributions, classes of comminution machines, testing and calcu¬lation procedures, and simulation and modeling. In Section 3B, Crush¬ing. the subjects include jaw crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, hammermills, and impactors. The chapters of Section 3C, Grinding, cover aspects common to tumbling mills, ball mills, rod mills, autogenous mills, pebble mills, roller mills, fluid energy mills, other types of grinding machines, and grinding costs. Section 3D, Classification, coverage includes classification theory, hydrocyclones, and mechanical classifiers, and in Section 3E, Screening, the topics presented are classes of screens, selection of vibrating screens, sieve bend screens, and screening media. About five years after the Handbook was begun, Section 3 was unfortunately without an editor or contributors for over half of the chapters. A committee was then organized to expedite completion of the section. When this committee contacted the persons who had agreed to contribute to the section, it was found that many of them wished to resign from their earlier voluntary obligation to AIME. Therefore the committee had to find new contributors for these chap¬ters in addition to other chapters in Section 3. Since there had been no previous effort to locate contributors for Air Classification, Dust Collection, and Washing and Scrubbing, it was agreed to delete these subsections. In Section 3, equipment availability, capacity, and performance data from various manufacturers and users are provided for engineer¬ing use. Selected data from existing installations are also included. The machines that are being used in comminution, classification, and screening are described in detail, and drawings, photographs, and diagrams are presented to supplement the descriptive material. The editors thank and acknowledge the generous effort of the many contributors, some of whom were called upon five or more years after the Handbook was started. It is regretted that Fred C. Bond, who was a member of the committee formed to complete this section, was deceased before the section was finished. During the time that he worked with the committee, he contributed a great deal as an author and councilor.

This paper addresses the sharing of 2D and 3D data between GIS and mine planning software. Two-dimensional (2D) data, and now three-dimensional (3D) data as well, can be formatted such that both types of software can use, exchange, and display the same datasets. This increases the ability to share data between such groups as environmental, exploration, and mine planning. It overcomes shortcomings of mine planning software in areas of open database connectivity, spatial analysis, and data input and output. It also helps to overcome shortcomings of GIS software in the areas of geologic modeling, three-dimensional interpolation, and visualization.

"The construction of the three connecting tunnels between the east side and the west side of station C13, adjacent to the Vistula river, has a long and complex history, as they cross beneath one of Warsaw’s main road arteries (Wislostrada). After the attempt to excavate the first tunnel, the face of the tunnel collapsed on the night of August 13, 2012, and a volume of about 10,000 cubic meters of liquid mass (water, silty soil and sand) entered and flooded the west side of the station, which was filled with more than seven meters of material. Fortunately, the workers managed to escape, but machines and equipment were lost. This is the story of how the tunnels were completed, by adopting soil improvement, jet grouting, GRP bars, ground freezing and a careful choice of work steps. INTRODUCTION The Centrum Nauki Kopernik station on Line II of the Warsaw Underground is located alongside to the Vistula river (Figure 1). This station hereinafter is referred to as station C13.The station consist of three parts: the east and west part, and three connecting tunnels 40 meters in length with a large cross section (170 m2).. It includes the rails along the sides and the platform along the centre. The reason for the underground connection of two shafts with a tunnel is due to the presence of a road tunnel (Wislostrada, hereinafter called WS), which must be underpassed by the new metro line (Figure 2).The existing tunnel (Wislostrada) was built many years before, between diaphragm walls, and some foundation structures interfere with the underground tunnel. The challenge was to build the connectors without stopping the traffic of vehicles along the highway above. All works took place in very difficult geological and groundwater conditions due to the presence of Vistula alluvial deposits with poor mechanical characteristics. The soil profile consists of relatively loose sands on top, and silts overlying high plasticity Pliocene clays highly disturbed by the effects of the repeated over-sliding of glacial moraine deposits."

The purpose of this paper is two fold. It will: (1) examine leasing analysis as a project evaluation criterion, and (2) compare the cost of leasing with other methods of financing. The use of leasing has grown extensively in recent years as a method of obtaining equipment. The computer industry has been highly dependent upon leasing from its earliest days to dispurse its equipment to the customer, while airlines and railroads acquire large segments of their aircraft and rolling stock by leasing. Over the last few years the mining industry has leased haulage trucks, bulldozers and other equipment of similar nature.

Long term production planning in open pit mines requires the determination of cutoff grade, mining and milling production rates, mining sequence, mine life, and ultimate pit limits. These variables interact in a circular fashion, that is, the value of a variable can not be determined without the knowledge of the value of the preceding variable in the circle. Therefore, a genuine solution to the problem necessitates simultaneous determination of the variables. Such a solution methodology, comprised of a group of heuristic algorithms and an unconventional dynamic programming algorithm, is described in this paper. The methodology is applied to a small size Western US gold deposit to illustrate its logic and capabilities.

The underground extraction of coal is associated with ground movements extending from the mining area to the ground surface, which result in bowls of ground subsidence, with amplitude exceeding the amount of several meters and occasionally with important tilt and curvature of ground surface. Such changes at both the underground environment and surface topography lead to destruction of buildings, failure of utilities and transportation networks, and occasionally formation of areas vulnerable to flooding, or even small pools. Based on geodetic surface measurements of ground elevation changes, various theories and empirical models relating surface subsidence with the geometry of underground voids formed have been proposed, and predictions of expected subsidence in the form of contours have been estimated. In this study a case study of planning of a new highway network through areas in which coal extraction was also planned is discussed. This work is partly funded by EU. The optimum solution selected was a modification of the initial highway planning, so that the road is increased in length and by-passes the richest coal-field, where maximum post-exploitation subsidence was predicted, and only crosses either minor coalfields, which are not to be exploited, or even margins of main coalfields, in which minor post-exploitation subsidence is expected.

The problem of setting the proper control objectives and/or having several objectives to be met in the implementation of grinding control strategies can be resolved. The design and implementation of a distributed control system for safe operation of a grinding circuit while maximizing profit is presented. An optimal recovery/throughput target for a desired grind is accomplished by advanced control strategies at the DCS level. A mill load constraint control technique provides stable operation with a substantial increase in throughput, while the desired grind index is maintained by an inferential grind control technique without using a particle size analyzer. The integration of crushing/grinding and flotation in the overall design was the key to the success of the project. This synergistic effect was obtained by implementing a computer -plant management system in the concentrator. The overall philosophy of keeping the implementation simple but not simpler was used.

Electrowinning is a key process for copper production contributing roughly twenty percent globally and thirty to forty percent of production in the Americas1. Copper grade is assessed largely on deposit smoothness and on level of impurities in the metal. Smoothing aids are essential to create dense, low porosity deposits and guar has long been the material of choice for this purpose. Guar is, however, poorly stable under the strongly acidic electrowinning conditions, underlying ongoing research to identify an effective, acid-tolerant replacement. Current efficiency is also a critical factor in controlling copper production costs and chemical additives should ideally improve current efficiency as well as improving deposit smoothness.

In a future world of 8.5 billion people in 2035, the Energy Information Administration's (EIA) projected 50% increase in energy consumption will require true "all of the above" energy resource use from oil, gas, renewables, nuclear, and coal. In particular, coal will continue to be the world's energy cornerstone, providing more incremental energy over that same time period than any other single fuel. Coal has long been a centerpiece of a low-cost, high-reliability electricity grid. Today there are 1.3 billion people across the globe without access to electricity and 2.7 billion people who do not have clean cooking facilities. The problem is spread across the developing world, but it is particularly severe in sub-Saharan Africa and developing Asia, which together account for 95% of people in energy poverty. Without a commitment to achieve universal energy access it has been estimated that by 2030, there will be an additional 1.5 million premature deaths per year caused by household pollution from burning wood and dung and through a lack of access to clean water, basic sanitation and healthcare. Modern energy sources are essential to meeting these challenges.

In the past thirty years, there have been a large number of ownership changes in the industrial minerals arena and many medium to large companies have made industrial mineral acquisitions. Industrial minerals are exceedingly important to the achievement and maintenance of a high standard of living in the United States and in other developed countries. In the developed countries of the world the value of industrial minerals exceeds the values of the metallic minerals. In the U.S., the value of our industrial minerals is some 2 112 times that of the value of our metallic minerals. Almost every single thing we use or touch in our daily lives can be related to an industrial mineral. Examples are the construction industry, agriculture, ceramics, paper, paint, plastics, electronics, glass, petroleum, and many more in which an industrial mineral or minerals playa functional role. Industrial minerals are exceedingly diverse in their values, properties, and applications. Sand and gravel is an example of an essential industrial mineral commodity which has a low price but moves in very high volumes. Geographic location of this commodity is critical because of transportation costs. High calcium limestone or marble has a moderately high price particularly if it is white enough for use as a pigment or extender. This moves in moderately high tonnages and location is not as critical be-cause it can be shipped for considerable distances and still be competitive. Some specialty industrial minerals such as a white tale or white bentonite sells at a high price at low volumes and geographic location is not a major factor in marketing. Prices of industrial minerals do not tend to be cyclic and generally keep up with inflationary increases. Because of the diversity of industrial minerals very careful analyses of acquisitions or divestitures must be undertaken by buyers and/or sellers in order to prevent serious mistakes.

Metal prices are often predicted by relying on time trend projections of various economic indicators or even the trend in price itself Thus, time is the underlying explanatory variable acting through at best, a limited selection of economic variables. The price prediction method described in this paper differs from this by analyzing hundreds of economic variables to develop a few principle components that automatically capture the fundamental changes in the economy and delete duplicate or irrelevant information. This leaves a few principle variables to describe a state-space representation of the economy which can then be used for prediction. Forecasts of the price of a metal are then made based on these principle variables.

Minerals Engineering Company (MECO) is a relatively small, promotionally oriented mineral exploration company founded in Colorado in 1948 during the height of the uranium boom. The company has been: 1. in uranium exploration and production 2. a drilling company 3. a manufacturer of Geiger counters 4. a major tungsten producer 5. then dormat for several years and 6. now we are back into exploration on a broad scale. We have been in underground lead and zinc production in the 1970's but we are now involved primarily in "wheeling and dealing" in mineral exploration. The company has had diverse interests in the past and we are presently diversifying to some extent into oil and gas ventures.

The Endako, British Columbia, deposit was initially discovered in 1927 by two local men, Charles H. Foote and Alf Lagdon, who were at that time on a hunting expedition. Four mineral claims were located to cover an area of quartz-molybdenite float that was centered on two small ridges. They subsequently uncovered a 0.5-m (1.6-ft) wide vein on which an inclined shaft was sunk to a depth of 8.3 m (27.2 ft) in 1934. Additionally, a short adit was driven to intersect another vein. Numerous trenches and small pits were also dug. Small test shipments of vein material from this early work were sent to G.S. Eldridge and Co. in Vancouver for metallurgical testing. A concentrate assaying 89.2% MoS, was produced with a recovery reported as 93.3%. The concentrate was essentially free of copper, arsenic, and phosphate. The property was examined by many geologists and engineers during 1934 to 1952, but the only work done was undertaken by the owners in order to maintain their claims in good standing. In 1952, Kennco Explorations (Canada) Ltd. carried out a limited program of bulldozer trenching, sampling, and geological mapping before relin- quishing their option. In 1956, American Standard Mines Ltd. acquired an option on the property, but no assessment work was apparently recorded and the property was allowed to lapse. The key claims were restaked in 1959 by C. Riley and H.T. James of Vancouver. The property was optioned from the new owners by Andrew Robertson in July 1961, and a small amount of trenching was conducted. Robertson, on behalf of his own company, R & P Metals Corp., reoptioned the property in January 1962. The initial results of this work were favorable and justified further exploration. The additional finances required to continue the program resulted in the formation of Endako Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) on June 21, 1962. Field work by R & P Metals and the first Endako Mines exploration was directed by Bob Couts.

In a continuing effort to upgrade tunnel design and construction practice, the New York City Transit Authority sponsored a geotechnical monitoring program on a recently completed section of the E. 63rd Street line in mid-town Manhattan. The purpose of the program was to document rock behavior as well as temporary and final rock support systems to provide a possible basis for either confirmation or modificification to design methods and construction specifications. This paper describes those portions of the study associated with rock behavior and temporary support systems. The entire study included monitoring of rock movements above the tunnel as well as adjacent to a 36.6m (120 ft) shaft, monitoring of stresses in steel ribs, monitoring of loads in rock bolts in two test sections and monitoring of stresses in the final concrete lining. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Route 131-A, Section 4 is located in mid-town Manhattan extending from under the Central-Park Zoo on Fifth Avenue eastward under 63rd Street to the end of contract between Madison and Park Avenue. Figure 1 is a Project Locus Map. The contract included approximately 355m (1165 l.f.) of 4 track tunnel(13.4m (44 ft) wide by 13.7m (45 ft) high excavated dimensions) plus a 22.9m (75 ft) by 19.8m (65 ft) by 36.6m (120 ft) deep ventilation shaft. The entire tunnel and most of the excavation shaft was excavated in metamorphic rock, known locally as the Manhattan Schist. The depth to tunnel invert varied from approximately 27.4m (90 ft) at the west end of the contract to 35.Om (115 ft) at the east end. Rock cover above the excavated crown varied from approximately 6.7m (22 ft) at the approximate mid-point of the contract to 18.9m (62 ft) at the western end. The packed column flotation cell is an awesome separation device. Virtually unknown and untested, the packed column flotation cell is one of the ten most important developments in mineral processing of the 21st century. Though experimental and industrial data is limited, it is clear that the packed column flotation cell is two to three orders of magnitude better than the conventional flotation cell and one to one and a half orders of magnitude better than the open column flotation cell. With the modern packing taking up less than one percent of the packed column, column blocking does not occur. For a packed column operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the estimated mean time between failures (MTBF) is one hundred thousand hours or roughly twelve years. With no moving parts, lower maintenance costs, lower power consumption and inherent operating stability, the packed column is a powerful separating machine. Because there is little meaningful data for comparing the packed column to the conventional flotation cell and the open column flotation cell, much of the material presented in this paper are guesstimates. They are disinterested guesstimate made by the authors after extensive theoretical work and reviewing the known facts. In the authors' opinion, no available data contradicts the guesstimate. The authors expect that there may be errors as large as three hundred percent. Even three hundred percent errors will not change the conclusions of this paper. The packed column flotation cell is a formidable separating device. To understand the problems of comparing the three types of flotation cells, consider the fact that the three cells may have different modes of separation. One of the authors, Meloy, believes that in the conventional cell, the primary particle separation takes place in the liquor with secondary separation taking place in the froth, while for open column flotation, all the separation takes place in the froth. However, he believes that in the packed column a large part of the separation may take place on the walls of the packing. If this is true, not only is the method of modeling each type of cell different, but the method of particle selection in the cell is different. This means that one type of cell may be better at differentiating between two different types of particles. There is a growing body of literature on open and packed column flotation.
