IIT Research Institute has initiated several multi-sponsored research programs. In this paper the methods for developing four of these programs are discussed. In general, a broad area of investigation must be proposed to interest a spectrum of different industries. The work must not touch upon proprietary data and will probably involve a number of scientific disciplines. Thus, the problem to be solved will attract sponsors who need to know more about the area under study but do not wish, as a single company, to commit the resources required to obtain the necessary know-how for their needs. The paper draws on the background of four IITRI multi-sponsored projects: Size Reduction, a study of grinding of material to reduce their particle size; Melt-Formed Ceramics Research, a method of producing dense, polycrystalline ceramics using glass forming methods; Binders in Ceramic Processing, which addresses the problems associated with the use of organic aids for ceramic processing; and a Study in Air Pollution Technology, a program to review and assess pollution control equipment for current and future applications.

Linear estimation methods are widely used for resource evaluation. Among the existing linear estimation methods, ordinary Kriging (OK) was accepted as the best estimator to determine the average ore grade of each block. However, OK is inadequate for modeling small blocks in relation to data spacing, resulting in over-smoothed models. In this study, the results of the recoverable resource from the short-term model are compared to estimated models generated by the traditional method, i.e., OK, and non-linear methods. The conclusion is that non-linear methods improve the accuracy and precision of the long-term model when compared to the model generated by OK.

Precious metals have been sought by man through time. The search has been the cause of many historic events as well as the founding of the famous Mexican, Minion centers of Durango, Guanajuato, Zacatecas and others. Bacis, a silver - cold deposit in the State of Durango was one of the lesser known centers established during Spanish colonial times. During the past year, metal prices have suffered a substantial decline, resulting in the closure of many mines. Through astute exploration, development and exploitation of the mine, the effect of the low prices has been offset and the mine is surviving these hard times.

[Screening by centrifugal force is an unique, subject, for with the exception of only one vibrating screen presently on the market, all vibrating screens depend upon, gravity to pass material through a sizing mesh or screen cloth. This one screen that sizes by centrifugal force and utilizes gravity only to convey materiel along the screen, is the SYMONS V-Screen. Leaching is defined as a form of extraction in which a valuable constituent is removed from a solid body by mass transfer to a solution which, for the purpose of this discussion, is considered to be an aqueous medium. Historically, leaching has been applied to the recovery and purification of many elements. This paper, however, is directed toward the recovery of copper, uranium, vanadium, and precious metals included in the following systems: 1. The leaching of copper minerals, sulfides and oxides, by acid or by ammoniacal leach solutions with or without an oxidant. 2. The leaching of gold and silver, either native metals or as minerals by an oxygen-containing alkaline cyanide solution. 3. The solubilization of certain uranium and vanadium minerals by oxygen or oxidant-bearing lixiviants. Many other systems of this general type exist, but from a production standpoint, these three systems account for most of the major values recovered by leaching.

Techniques utilized to incorporate geological data in computer modeling and ore reserve estimation have undergone considerable evolution during the past fifteen years. Computer analysis and evaluation of two precious metal deposits are presented as examples of innovative computer techniques developed at Asarco. The first is a gold deposit occurring in a steeply dipping Pre-Cambrian greenstone sequence. The second is a manto-like manganiferous silver deposit occurring in a relatively flat sequence of Late-Paleozoic sediments. In both deposits, four sub-horizontal zones of geological influence are evaluated.

First comes our definition of education--and education is not the merely formal acquiring of academic knowledge, but the understanding, using and projection of knowledge into our channels of life and thought activity. This past year makes us realize the extent to which price and economic cut-off may stimulate or curtail exploration,, But exploration does not consist solely in the discovery of sources of material. There is just as inspiring and imaginative a territory in the develop¬ment of uses and application--and no one in our base metal industry but would hope that our educational processes would fertilize those springs of inspiration that lie dormant in us all, toward the- imaginative conception of new uses--lead roofing cloths or felts, non-tarnishable copper utensils, further zinc solid state application. Thus an educational pattern should seek to develop imagination and thinking beyond--the possibility of that small but oh so difficult step just ahead of the existing,

INTRODUCTION Man is exposed to many agents which induce mutations in germ cells and/or cancer at work, at play, and at home. In this total mix of mutagenic and carcinogenic agents, how important are radon and its daughters? Before man moved into caves and other permanent dwellings, the principal mutagenic and carcinogenic agent to which he was exposed was natural background radiation--cosmic rays, radium and potassium-40 in his food, plus gamma rays and radon from the soil and rocks. When man moved into caves, captured fire, and began to preserve and store foods, his exposure to carcinogens and mutagens took a quantum leap. Carcinogens and mutagens appear to act in the same way, that is, by altering the DNA or nuclear proteins of cells. Most mutagens are carcinogens, and vice versa, so when I say mutagens from here on, I will be referring to both. The relationship of the two is emphasized by the fact that administration of a carcinogen to a group of animals not only increases cancer rates among the exposed animals, but also among their progeny (Tomatis 1979). Environmental Mutagens Smoke from man's fires, overheated foods, and foods preserved by smoking, resulted in ingestion and inhalation of many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons--many of which are mutagens. Caves and houses with tight windows and doors tend to collect the radon which is constantly emanating out of soil, rocks and concrete, so man's exposure to the radon daughter component of background radiation increased several fold. Preserving food by salting or pickling with material that contained nitrites and nitrates led to increased ingestion of nitrosamines, which are potent mutagens. When his grains and other foods were stored in slightly damp rooms, fungi or mold would grow on them. Several of these fungi are now known to produce very potent mutagens. The best known of these is aflatoxin B (Ramachandra 1979). It may seem strange that a living organism would produce a mutagen. One might think that it would scramble its own genetic heritage. The reason it does not is that it produces the mutagen in an inactive form. It can be activated only by an animal's enzyme systems after being eaten. When man moved into cities, the collective smoke from wood and coal fires further increased his exposure. That particular smoke has now mostly disappeared, but has been replaced by smoke from automobiles and industry. When man moved into the age of technology, his exposure to mutagens again increased dramatically. Many mutagenic chemicals, from benzene and beta naphthylamine to a long array of pesticides and tobacco products have been added to our environment. Excess deaths from cancer are now being observed among chemists in most industrialized nations. Mutagens are even found in much of our wine, beer, and whiskey (Keller 1980). Some of the chemical mutagens were widely used in food or in other commercial products before their potential was discovered. Striking examples of this is the original butter coloring agent and the polychlorinated biphenyls that have been widely used in brake fluids and electrical transformers. Large quantities of them have been discarded or disposed of in a careless manner--in such a way that many of them have contaminated our food, our ground water and air (Landrigan 1981). In this nation, with the help of several recent laws, we were just beginning to get control of the industrial chemical mutagens. With the relaxing of these laws that is currently going on, it appears that it will be many more years before we really bring chemical mutagens under control. Many nations have yet to come to grips with this problem. On top of this massive array of chemical mutagens we have now added radiation from many artificial sources. For most of us this means medical X-ray and fallout from nuclear weapons testing. Ionizing radiation is one of the most potent mutagens, so it has caught the public eye, and its contribution cannot be ignored. Fortunately, by the time we started using radioactive materials in quantity with the Manhattan Project, we had experience with radium and X-ray (some of it bad); we knew enough radiobiology and enough about methods of radiation protection so that most nuclear laboratories have had a phenomenal record of radiation safety. Radiation is one new technology with great potential for harm that has not exhibited that potential except for a few isolated situations like that of radium dial painters, uranium miners and atomic bomb victims. Uranium miners slipped into this list almost by accident. We could have protected our uranium miners just as well as we did the workers in nuclear laboratories; but we failed to do so. Why didn't we? The reason is simple. The Atomic Energy Commission was charged with protecting the health of their workers. They did not wait for a pile of bodies before they introduced controls. Congress appropriated the money, and taxpayers were willing to pay for the protection against radiation. Miners unfortunately did not work for the Atomic Energy Commission. Although mine operators were ignorant about radiation, the key item was that in the 1950s nobody was willing to pay the extra costs of adequate ventilation to control the high levels of radon and radon daughters in uranium mines. Control was not achieved until new laws and regulations were passed which made it compulsory. BIRTH DEFECTS AND CANCER

The major cost in comminution is energy consumption, which can be as high as 50 percent of the operating cost. Improvements in plant operations have resulted in up to a 15-percent reduction in energy usage (kwh/t). These improvements have been made through optimization of grinding efficiency and use of expert model-based control systems. Optimization involves the determination of the levels of the critical operating conditions that result in the most efficient breakage of ore in the mill. These optimal levels are identified through plant/laboratory testwork and computer simulation using advanced process models. Model-based expert control achieves the maximum performance from the grinding circuit by identifying the characteristics of the ore in the mill with an optimal on-line estimator. Using this information, the control system dynamically determines the operating point that will yield the optimal performance. Two industrial applications of grinding circuit optimization and model-based control are presented to demonstrate the power of this new technology.

Bingham Canyon lies in the heart of the Oquirrh Mountains, 25 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. In it is located the world's largest open-pit copper mine, owned and operated by the Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation. From the beginning of open pit mining operations in 1906 until 1963, the pit haulage, or materials transportation, was primarily by rail. In 1963, phase-in of a truck haulage system in the upper two-thirds of the pit was begun. The details of that conversion, its associated problems and the resulting pit operation have been covered in an earlier paper.1 The purpose of this paper is to discuss various factors for consideration in transportation system selection, and to discuss some of the alternatives considered prior to making the change from rail haulage to truck haulage for a portion of Bingham Canyon.

Roadheaders offer a unique capability and flexibility for the excavation of soft to medium strength rock formations, therefore, are very attractive in underground mining and tunneling operations. This paper reviews the importance, technological developments and application limits of roadheaders based on the case histories, which are compiled in a database including different roadheaders in various geological conditions. The paper also discusses the database and empirical performance prediction studies regarding instantaneous cutting rates and bit consumption rates.

"Conventional" coal dryers really do not exist. What we really mean to say is that there are many and varied kinds of coal dryers -- and the "air handling problem" is really the only portion of it which has been approached for solution by conventional methods. It now appears that these conventional methods need supplementing by some new, relatively unconventional apparatus. In order to approach this matter with mutual understanding, here is a quick survey of the coal drying art. Figure #1 shows a McNally Pittsburgh Pulso Dryer, In the McNally Pulso Dryer, the coal is fed-onto the screen by a rotary feeder assuring even distribution of the coal. As the coal travels forward due to the action of the screen, it is subjected to a controlled pulsating flow of hot gases. T ese originate below the deck and are directed up through the moving bed of coal. Fines sifting through the deck are dried in the hopper below the screen as they fall through the hot gases to an evacuation screw. The coal remaining on the screen is dried to the desired degree when it reaches the discharge end. At this point, it is directed down into the evacuation screw to combine with the fines, or it may be discharged as a separate product. As the coal travel down the screen, it is subjected to intermittent upward currents of hot gases. These first distend the bed allowing the gases to come into intimate contact with the coal particles for rapid and efficient heat transfer. Then, as the flow of gas is cut off, the bed settles and the extreme fines sift through the screen preventing their being carried away into the exhaust system.

Pre-concentration by sorting is as old as the mining industry. Inevitably waste rock is broken with ore. Separation may take place in the stopes by selective mucking and transport, or selective loading and transport of ore and waste by 12-cu, yd. shovels and 100-ton trucks in large open pit operations. Hand sorting of 1" to 16" pieces, formerly widely practiced at underground chutes and prior to or following first stage crushing, has greatly diminished in the United States with its high per hour labor cost, although still widely practiced in other countries and, surprisingly, in some of the most modern mills where inexpensive labor is available. The economics of pre-concentration by sorting is attractive since elimination of waste at any cost less than the total milling cost will show a profit. The size at which sorting should be under- taken is determined by the size at which liberation is secured to yield a product of ore and waste, and greatly influences cost and the point in the flowsheet where sorting can be undertaken. In some instances mining costs can be reduced where an inexpensive sorting system to eliminate waste is combined with a less selective and less costly mining method. This is particularly true in deep mines where hoisting capacity determines the rate of extraction and sorting is performed underground, with waste utilized for fill. Hand sorting, while efficient, is expensive because of low sorting rates. Peale (1) quotes man hour capacity at 1/3 ton per hour on sizes 3/4" to 3" copper ore, and up to 5 tons per hour on rich iron ore sized from 4" to 16".

This short dissertation concerning "what the client expects from the engineer" is directed mainly at the design and construction of metallic ore concentration or beneficiation plants. However, practically the same conditions apply to the design and construction of cement and lime manufacturing facilities, with the exception that the latter facilities reflect the client's and engineer's concepts of customer service and in some cases reflect promotional considerations for the product manufactured and distributed. Introduction In response to industry needs and requests, Joy Mining Machinery is aggressively evolving a "game changing" system of underground development mining machinery. This entry-development system (EDS) project is concentrated on providing clean, protected and ergonomic operator areas and a quantum leap in productivity. To meet these goals, a virtually continuous and automated mining system is needed. Operators must be able to efficiently and ergonomically perform required functions from a protected environment. Health-related issues, such as respirable dust and noise, must also be addressed. A new concept system of integrated face equipment, from the continuous miner to and including advancing the section belt and services, is needed. Phase I of the project was aimed at developing the bolting technology required. Through acquisition of Cram Australia and joint development efforts with Canyon Fuel Co., Joy now has this capability. The test platform, known as the Joy Multibolter, has successfully completed its trials at Canyon Fuel's SUFCo Mine (Fig. 1). These tests validated the bolting technology and operator protection and ergonomic issues. Phase II includes the development and testing of an integrated mining machine (IMM) capable of advancing a heading 1.5 m (5 ft) while simultaneously cutting a fullface width (single pass) and installing a complete bolt pattern. The IMM, unveiled at MINExpo 2000, incorporates the bolting technology of the Multibolter with automated full-face cutting. This machine was designed to meet Joy's stringent health, operator protection and 300m/d (1,000-ft/d) productivity goals. Phases III through V will include development of processes and integrated haulage, ventilation, power, material handling and section services advancing equipment. Processes and equipment developed will be designed for seamless integration into a complete entry development system. The focus of this paper is the new continuous miner (IMM) development, proposed testing and expectations for the EDS. The IMM is scheduled for commissioning and trials beginning in April 2001 at the SUFCo Mine. SUFCo Mine Canyon Fuel Co. is jointly owned by Arch Western Resources and the Itochu Corp. of Japan. It owns and operates three coal mines in Utah: the SUFCo Mine in Sevier County, the Skyline Mine in Carbon and Emery Counties and the Dougout Canyon Mine in Carbon County. Incorporating state-of-the-art-mining technology and advanced mine management practices, the SUFCo Mine is one of the most efficient underground coal mines in the world. The SUFCo Mine is located approximately 50-km (30 miles) northeast of Salina, UT, in the Wasatch Plateau portion of the Uinta coal basin. The mine property consists of 9,900 hm2 (24,470 acres) with approximately 118 Mt (130 million st) of recoverable reserves. Public utilities and industrial concerns purchase approximately 95% of the coal mined at SUFCo through short- or long-term contracts. Coal reserves are extracted by longwall mining, and the panels are developed using continuous miners. The longwall face at SUFCo Mine is 283-m (930-ft) wide, and the seam height ranges from 2.4 to 4 m (8 to 13 ft). The two development sections are in full operation using Joy 12CM12 continuous miners. Two super longwall panels, under development in the northeast portion of the lease block, are 4,270-m (14,000-ft) long with a 283-m (930-ft) wide longwall face. Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is used in the paper, plastics, paint, rubber, caulks, and sealants industries. The favorable properties of GCC include high whiteness and brightness, low hardness, and outstanding rheology in water systems. The quality of calcitic GCC ores, which include chalk, limestone, and marble, is dependent on calcite purity and the nature and quantity of ancillary minerals. Wet and dry grinding is used in the manufacture of GCC. Ore processed by optical sorting, flotation, and/or particle size classification has higher brightness and lower abrasion. GCC markets are a function of the product's properties, purity, and cost.

He has, prior to this assignment, been responsible for maintenance at Bagdad Copper, Cyprus' Miami smelter, and Thompson Creek. Like Jerry, he's very shy and retiring, and doesn't have any strong opinions about maintenance. INTRODUCTION CRAIG AMMAR: The ultimate goal behind implementing a proactive equipment management process is to provide capacity assurance and ultimately increase an organization's ability to generate revenue while reducing operating costs. Targeting such lofty objectives has brought many an organization to its knees, utilizing new maintenance techniques, concepts, and technology aimed at making our lives better and more organized. The root cause of such frustration generally stems from a lack of understanding or support for the fundamentals of implementing a proactive equipment management process. There are just two types of maintenance programs, reactive and proactive. It's an established fact that you need a little of both to run an effective equipment management process, obviously more of one (proactive) than the other. Here are some telltale signs that your equipment management process is in trouble: -Maintenance is performed as a knee jerk reaction when equipment fails. -Repeated and frequent equipment failures occur, with no focus on eliminating the root cause. -Sketchy, inconsistent, unclear preventive maintenance is performed or there is no support for the preventive maintenance process. -No predictive maintenance technology process is in place, or little support for predictive maintenance exists. -Less than 50 percent of your work is generated by the maintenance group resulting from inspections.

The availability of a fluid whose gross behavior sharply changes in a magnetic field without affecting its rheologic characteristics has been recently demonstrated. A colloidal solution of a ferrimagnetic material, such as magnetite, in a liquid that is immiscible with and lighter than water is projected for use in selective separation of particles according to their density spectrum in a continuous fashion. Magnetic levitation forces were created as an antigravity field when the fluid was properly placed in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. Five spherical non¬magnetic objects with densities ranging from 2.70 to 11.35 gram cm ' were made to float or submerge at will in a 0.96-gram cm-3 density fluid placed at vertical magnetic field gradients ranging from 0.2 to I kilooersted cm-1. The magnetic levitation farce in dyne cm-3 was found to vary linearly as a function of the object-fluid density mismatch with a slope equal to one g, the acceleration due to gravity.

Chemistry plays a more important role in milling operations than is generally recognized, particularly in fluid- solid separation processes. Chemical aspects are also very important insofar as plant water quality is concerned, and in the manner in which this water quality effects plant design and operation. Aside from the inherent chemical characteristics of plant water, the mineral preparation industry is becoming increasingly more dependent on the use of mining chemical reagents--relatively new to the coal industry, but items of I standard usage in complex metal recovery plants. These chemicals have many useful properties and can produce significant improvements in operations and metallurgical efficiencies when used properly and intelligently. They can produce poor results and sometimes severe losses when used improperly. Most reagents are relatively expensive on a per pound basis, hence costs can be excessive if they are used wastefully or inefficiently.

In a proposed rulemaking regulating asbestos, nonasbestos varieties of Tremolite, Anthophyllite and Actinolite would be excluded from the regulations controlling permissible exposure to asbestos fibers. This proposed rulemaking is perceived as improving the scientific basis of the regulation of asbestos because it recognizes that there are no scientific data, either mineralogical or health related, which support the regulation of nonasbestos Tremoiite, Anthophyllite and Actinolite in the same manner as asbestos fibers. However, the proposed regulation, while representing a major advance in the treatment of AT A for regulatory purposes, does not provide an adequate analytical method for distinguishing between asbestos and nonasbestos particles, nor an adequate description of the regulated minerals. This paper addresses those topics, recommending that OSHA include an appropriate mineralogical definition, and implement a discriminate counting procedure to distinguish asbestos from nonasbestos particles.
