Remediation of the environmental (and social) disturbances caused by opencast brown coal mining in the past in north-west Bohemia isa priority for state environmental policy. In order to provide a concept for full restoration of land following disturbance by opencast mining, a special interdisciplinary project supported by a grant from the Czech Ministry of Environment was started in 2000. The initial stage of the project was intended to summarize and evaluate the findings and the works carried out in connection with various reclamation activities in the afflicted area over a period of more than 50 years. The main aims of the three-year project are to make use of the best available landscape environmental management knowledge in order to harmonize the ecological, aesthetic, productive and social functions of new valuable landscape, including the recovery of historical continuity and an understanding of ?landscape memory?. The basic landscape functions were assessed on two different scale levels. On a large scale, the relevant attributes were investigated over the whole area of the Sokolov brown coal basin (220 km2). The data and experience acquired were used to define large-scale guiding principles for the rehabilitation of a post-mining landscape. On a small scale, the basic characteristics and functions of the landscape were analysed in the Litov-Chlum model area (2 km2). The information derived from this analysis was used to formulate a small-scale approach for the rehabilitation of the model area and also to define general methodological principles. Premier Diamond Mine exploits a kimberlite orebody using cave mining methods. A drilling level is established at the base of a block of ore to effect undercutting that leads to caving of the overlying ore. A second level is developed some 15 metres below the undercutting level to allow extraction of the ore once it has caved. As much as 45 per cent of the rock is removed on the extraction level creating a series of pillars. Undercutting creates abutment stresses, as high as 3 times the virgin stress, which affect the rock mass to a distance of 20 metres from the undercut face on the undercut level and on the extraction level 15 metres below. If the extraction level is completely developed prior to undercutting, where stress levels exceed 20 percent of the rock mass strength, extensive rock mass and support damage occurs as the undercut passes overhead. Rock mass damage takes the form of movement along existing joints and minor shear failure through intact rock. Support damage takes the form of cracking in rigid concrete linings. Where induced stresses exceed 50 per cent of the rock mass strength it is often impractical to keep excavations on the extraction level open. Rock mass damage takes the form of extensive failure of the rock in shear which evidences itself as propagation of the fracture zone around tunnels and footwall heave. Support damage results in destruction of shotcrete linings and concrete footwalls. As the interbolt support fails, badly fractured rock ravels around the steel tendons. Observation and monitoring at Premier Mine and on other cave mines has shown that induced stress levels and consequent damage are a function of :?the extraction ratio on the undercut and extraction level prior to undercutting ?the shape of the undercut face ?the rate of undercut advance ?the distance of leads and lags between adjacent tunnels on the undercut level. To ensure the stability of excavations, all of the above parameters must be carefully planned and the planned mining sequence rigidly enforced. The minimum of development is completed on the extraction level prior to the undercut passing overhead. Required development is then rapidly completed once the area has been de-stressed. Support is installed in three phases: ?Rockbolts are installed as soon as excavations are developed ?Wire mesh, steel tendon straps and a layer of shotcrete sufficient to protect the mesh and straps from damage by blasting and LHD loading is installed as soon as practical thereafter. Inevitably the shotcrete lining has to be replaced once the undercut has passed overhead.. ?Rigid shotcrete linings and concreted footwalls are completed only after the undercut has passed overhead and the area has been de-stressed.

In exploiting the ultra-deep, narrow reef ore bodies of the Witwatersrand, the ventilation and cooling systems within the stopes play a critical role because of high concentrations of active workers. This paper examines the heat, ventilation and cooling effects of a number of different stoping layouts for narrow reef mining in ultra-deep operations in very hot rock. The stope ventilation and cooling needs are driven primarily by the difference between the air temperature and that of the rock front being excavated. These needs depend on the face utilization, geometry, face advance (rate and direction), layout, backfill, use of water and machinery1,2,3. Detailed studies of different stoping configurations have been undertaken for mining operations extending to depths of 5000m below surface, where virgin rock temperatures approach 70°C. Extensive work has been completed with regard to evaluating ventilation and cooling requirements to maintain air reject temperatures of 28°C wet-bulb and better. This knowledge is being used to determine overall cooling requirements, reduce operational costs and maximize the efficiency of cooling systems. These issues are important when considering both the local and regional air conditioning systems and the most effective application of in-stope chilled water.

The characterization of platinum group minerals (PGMs) from concentrator flotation circuits provides valuable information towards understanding PGM recovery under given milling and flotation conditions. Additional mineralogical characterization also provides information on ore variability, which may affect recovery. Considering the low grades involved, automated scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization of PGMs has enabled relatively quick analyses, compared with older, time consuming and less accurate optical microscopy methods. Over the years, parameters, such as species, size distribution, liberation, gangue and base metal sulfide (BMS) associations, have been used to characterize the PGMs in a process mineralogical context, to aid metallurgical interpretation. This paper considers whether flotation indices determined for PGMs can be empirically validated, using initial results from analysis of PGMs in a concentrate bank from a South African concentrator treating UG2 ore from the western limb of the Bushveld Complex. The aim is to determine whether floatability is adequately described by these parameters, or whether other mineralogical factors must be considered when assessing PGM floatability, and hence accounting for recovery vs. losses to tails. The data obtained to date, show that flotation parameters (including liberation index, BMS/gangue relationships and size distribution) have merits where large changes in PGM concentration occur, as observed in the first four cells of the concentrate bank. Larger data sets, however, are required to assess floatability, particularly where concentrate cell grades are similar, as observed in the last six cells of the concentrate bank. Furthermore, the floatability indices could be enhanced by the incorporation of selected associated gangue mineral information, chief amongst these being the content and mode of occurrence of naturally floatable talc and associated orthopyroxene.

South Africa is one of the leading producers and exporters of coal globally. A significant amount of the country’s production is obtained from previously mined underground bord and pillar workings. This coal is in the form of pillars and remnants on the roof and floor of the old workings. The good quality coal pillars were left behind as primary support during underground bord and pillar mining operations. Due to the depletion of virgin coal reserves, the pillars and remnant coal are now removed using opencast mining rather than underground methods. However, the secondary extraction of pillars and remnant coal from the old workings using opencast methods entails some serious challenges that have a negative impact on the safety and productivity of the operations, affecting both personnel and machinery. If these risk factors and challenges are managed properly, then the opencast mining operations could remove the pillars safely at recoveries competitive with those of virgin coal operations. In this study we review the recurring challenges affecting opencast pillar mining by means of field investigations and consultations with experts at five opencast pillar mining operations, and evaluate the best practices used to combat these challenges. It was found that each mine has its own unique conditions and challenges.

The transmission of excessive vibration to the human body can cause physical stress that may result in crippling pain or permanent disability. Rock drills are known to transmit high levels of vibration that are difficult to attenuate through conventional approaches to vibration isolation. However, it can be shown that once the ISO frequency weighting has been applied, most of the vibratory effect of the rock drill?s motion is concentrated at the drill?s operating frequency. This observation opens the way for utilizing a concept known as vibration absorption, aimed at attenuating the rock drill?s vibration. In essence this entails using the inertia of a secondary vibratory system to counteract the motion of the handle. This article documents an investigation into the use of such an absorber for attenuating rock drill vibration and demonstrates the feasibility of such an approach. A mathematical model of such an absorbing handle was developed and used for design studies. Based on these investigations an experimental prototype model was manufactured and tested. A significant reduction in vibration levels could be achieved.

When the slope angles of the southern side of the Venetia open pit were required to be flattened by some 20 degrees after an analysis completed by De Beers geotechnical engineering in conjunction with SRK, the additional waste stripping tonnage generated was in the order of some 70 million tons. The potential cost of having to move this tonnage had a significantly negative effect on the Net Present Value of Venetia Mine, challenging the viability of the third pushback and rendering a potential fourth pushback completely uneconomic. This paper details some of the innovation that went into the design and planning process undertaken to virtually negate the instantaneous effect of the flattened slope angles and the associated waste tonnage as well as further improve the NPV of Venetia Mine and bring the fourth pushback back into economic viability. This process has become known as NPV+ and is anon going exercise in waste reduction/deferment and revenue advancement.

The electrodes of a Submerged Arc Furnaces carry a high current and are subject to enormous stresses caused by both the electric arc itself, and the current distribution within the electrode. The external effect of the arc on the electrode is treated in a different paper at this conference, The purpose of this paper is to analyze the thermal effects of ohmic heating within the electrode at the arc attachment on the carbon based electrode, using data for Søderberg electrodes. The thermal conditions are then used to examine stress conditions in the vicinity of an arc. Two types of models of an electrode are presented in the paper. The first type is an accurate finite element model, based on both two and three dimensional elements and the second type is an one dimensional model, providing better insight into the problem. For the second type, a spherical model of thermal conditions in a semi-infinite solid has been developed. Results show that the electrode surface is heated quickly up to a maximum temperature and for a specific test case, the surface can only withstand the load for about 10 seconds. Also, the thermal stresses on the surface are very high which will increase erosion on the surface in addition to normal evaporation.

High temperature creep resistant alloys are used in power plants as steam pipes and headers where they have to withstand super heated steam temperatures of up to 600ºC for the lifetime of the plant. Frequently certain portions of pipes may be subjected to excessive temperatures and consequently suffer from creep damage. Damaged portions then have to be replaced by welding new steel to the service exposed steel. Such welds will have to be subjected to a post weld heat treatment (PWHT) to relieve residual stress. During such a PWHT it is then possible for the steel to crack in the heat affected zone (HAZ) by what is known as Reheat Cracking (RHC), also known as stress relief cracking. For the present purpose the RHC susceptibility of service exposed steel was compared with that of new steel by reproducing the temperature cycle to which the HAZ will be subjected during welding in a weld simulator. This was followed by PWHT where the influence of residual stress was studied by applying a constant stress to such a weld-simulated specimen in a creep testing machine. A sharp spiral was machined along the length of the cylindrical specimen to simulate the presence of a possible weld defect. In this way it is possible to subject all portions of the simulated HAZ to the same stress intensity. For the purpose of the investigation 1/2Cr-1/2Mo-1/4V steel known to be susceptible to RHC was chosen. During testing a constant tensile stress was maintained while the temperature was increased to follow the thermal cycle prescribed for PWHT. It was found that the new steel in all instances failed by RHC along the grain boundaries in the high temperature heat affected zone. In the case of the service exposed steel the creep strength of parent metal was lower than that of new steel as a result of exposure to a steam temperature of 540°C for about 15 years. Consequently, all of the failures during testing occurred in a ductile manner by necking outside the HAZ rather than by RHC. When service exposed steel is welded to new material, it is expected that the creep strain associated with stress relaxation will mostly be concentrated in the parent steel outside the HAZ. Accordingly, it should probably not be necessary to make any extra allowance for reheat cracking during repair of steam pipes manufactured from 1/2Cr-1/2Mo-1/4V steel other than that applicable for welding new steel.

This paper describes the allure of diamonds over time and highlights the magic and mystery of famous diamonds. Consideration is given to the effectiveness of marketing in the diamond industry. It is concluded that diamonds are held as cherished possessions, valued far above their real market price, retained as valued heirlooms, and widely used as a form of highly liquid currency. In order to sustain value, both from an investment and jewellery perspective, demand has been stimulated to keep pace with growing global supply while the illusion that ?diamonds are forever? has been fostered to ensure that most diamonds, once sold, do not re-enter the market.

Phase equilibria have been determined experimentally for pseudo-ternary sections of the form ?MnO?-(CaO+MgO)-(SiO2+Al2O3) with a fixed Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.17 and MgO/CaO weight ratios of 0.25 and 0.17 respectively for temperatures in the range 1473-1673 K. The primary phase fields present for the MgO/CaO weight ratio of 0.17 include manganosite (Mn,Mg,Ca)O; dicalcium silicate a-2(Ca,Mg,Mn)O?SiO2; merwinite 3CaO·(Mg,Mn)O·2SiO2; wollastonite [(Ca,Mg,Mn)O?SiO2]; diopside [(CaO,MgO,MnO,Al2O3)?SiO2]; tridymite (SiO2); tephroite [2(Mn,Mg)O?SiO2]; rhodonite [(Mn,Mg)O?SiO2] and melilite [2CaO?(MgO,MnO,Al2O3)?2(SiO2,Al2O3)]. For the section with MgO/CaO weight ratio of 0.25 the anorthite phase (CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2) is also present. The liquidus temperatures of ferro- and silico-manganese smelting slags have been determined. The liquidus temperatures at low MnO concentrations are shown to be principally dependent on the modified basicity weight ratio (CaO+MgO)/(SiO2+Al2O3).

Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes.

The paper presents the limit equilibrium equations for the analysis of toppling blocks on a rock slope. The safety conditions are assessed by a numeric procedure implemented in an Excel worksheet. The UDEC numerical program was exploited to validate the procedure. A probabilistic model considering the spacing variability of the discontinuities was developed to define the most relevant parameters in this kind of problems. Virtual Reality (VR) simulations are excellent tools for training, education, simulation of abnormal and dangerous conditions in mines and solving complex problems. Although the concept of VR has been around for nearly half a century, it has taken recent advances in hardware and software to bring this technology to within the budgetary reach of ordinary users and researchers. VR is now successfully being used in the minerals industry for: data visualization, accident reconstructions, simulation applications, risk analysis, hazard awareness and training. The Institute of Sustainable Minerals Industry, Advanced Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality Research Group (SMI-VR) at the University of Queensland, established in late 2000, has been involved in developing VR applications for the minerals industry in conjunction with various research centres. This paper illustrates the benefits of using advanced computer graphics and VR techniques in the minerals industry with some examples of applications developed.

Keywords: drying, steam drying, concentrates, copper, lead During the past twenty years steam drying has become a prominent technology for drying of non-ferrous metals concentrate. This is mainly because of its low energy consumption and very low emissions. The first applications of significant capacity were stationary steam dryers, which however, faced severe challenges in maintenance costs and availability. That technology was soon replaced by Kumera?s rotary steam drying technology, which has been the dominant technology in new dryer installations world-wide for the past ten years, ever since the first installation in Hamburg in 1999. There are ten Kumera steam dryers in operation today and five more to be commissioned during 2011. Practically every dryer is different owing to continuous development, new innovations and operational experience with continuous feedback from the operators. Most significant improvements relate to capacity increase with the Kumera steam-dryer family, new feeder systems at the wet end, a completely new design of the dry material discharge with increased availability, heating element design and material selection, and control systems. This paper discusses the modifications and improvements introduced which have enabled the Kumera steam dryer to become the global leader in new dryer installations.

In the first part of the article, the authors give a broad overview of the chemistry and some engineering aspects of bioleach processes, eventually leading to the important and critical issue of the stability of arsenic-containing residues, especially those derived from bioleaching of sulphidic gold ores. In the section ?Factors affecting arsenic stability? they give an excellent summary of the factors normally affecting the stability of such residues. This is followed by some valid comments on the suitability of a single leach test to evaluate the long-term stability of solid waste streams. However, they fail to mention that, up till now, no tests procedure has been accepted by either environmentalists or the mining/processing industry as a valid method to test the long-term stability of solid wastes. Their own method is no exception, although, like many others, it is useful to identify potential problems with solid wastes considered for disposal.

The smelter objective is to process wet concentrate to produce crushed, slow-cooled, sulphur-deficient nickel-copper matte rich in platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, and base metals for despatch to the Magnetic Concentration Plant at the Base Metals Refinery. Throughout its history, the smelter complex has been continuously upgraded in line with increasing production demand, changing feeds, environmental initiatives, and advances in available technology. The smelter receives filter cake and slurry from Anglo Platinum concentrators and joint ventures. Wet concentrate is fed through a flash drying process utilising coal-fired, fluidised bed hot-gas generators, to produce dry feed material for the electric furnaces and slag-cleaning furnace. For primary smelting, two electric furnaces are used, each with a rated capacity of 34MW. Furnace matte, containing the bulk of the base metal sulphides and PGMs, is tapped periodically into refractory-lined ladles and granulated using high-pressure water jets, then dried through electrically powered pneumo-driers to become the main feed to the Anglo platinum Converting Process (ACP). Slag is tapped semi-continuously, granulated, and treated through the slag mill. The ACP treats the combined matte output of Waterval, Polokwane, and Mortimer smelters. It is a top-blown furnace, with furnace matte, air, and oxygen being injected into the converter via a lance submerged in the slag. Converter matte is tapped and bottom cast into moulds, slow-cooled, crushed, and despatched to the refineries. Slag is granulated and dried for recycling to the slag-cleaning furnace. ACP slag is fed to the slag-cleaning furnace along with a reductant and a sulphur source. Slag-cleaning-furnace matte is granulated for processing by the ACP, while slag is granulated and processed in the slag mill. The slag mill and flotation circuit treats granulated slag from the electric furnaces and slag-cleaning furnace to recover entrained matte containing valuable PGMs and base metal sulphides.
