Uranium is back on the radar. Uranium has always been a controversial metal, from its role in the arms race to its claim to be the only viable alternative to fossil fuel. This paper will cover its properties and use, its occurrence and production in South Africa, the current market drivers and its future role as a primary energy fuel. It will highlight the difference between uranium used to make a bomb and uranium used in a power station. The recent significant uranium price rise will be put into context of the market drivers including geopolitical issues. Planned expansions in nuclear power station capacity will be reviewed, as will new mine production. Future demand will also be speculated on.

"Exploitation of an ore deposit can be optimized by adapting the beneficiation processes to the properties of individual ore blocks. This can involve switching in and out certain treatment steps, or setting their controlling parameters. Optimizing this set of decisions requires the full conditional distribution of all relevant physical parameters and chemical attributes of the feed, including concentration of value elements and abundance of penalty elements. As a first step towards adaptive processing, the mapping of adaptive decisions is explored based on the composition, in value and penalty elements, of the selective mining units.Conditional distributions at block support are derived from cokriging and geostatistical simulation of log-ratios. A one-to-one log-ratio transformation is applied to the data, followed by modelling via classical multivariate geostatistical tools, and subsequent back-transforming of predictions and simulations. Back-transformed point-support simulations can then be averaged to obtain block averages that are fed into the process chain model.The approach is illustrated with a ‘toy’ example where a fourcomponent system (a value element, two penalty elements, and some liberable material) is beneficiated through a chain of technical processes. The results show that a gain function based on full distributions outperforms the more traditional approach of using unbiased estimates."

Several large falls of ground occur annually in the narrow, tabular stopes mined in the Bushveld Complex. These falls comprise safety risks and cause substantial production losses and compromise efforts to increase productivity. Underground observations in conjunction with instrumentation sites were used to establish the strategic parameters required to describe the rock mass behaviour of shallow-dipping stopes on the Bushveld platinum mines. Existing rock mass rating systems were evaluated using the observations and instrumentation results. None of the current systems adequately described all the relevant geotechnical conditions. Thus a hybrid of several current systems was developed, and the proposed system is discussed in the paper. The new rock mass rating system is termed the ?New Modified Stability Graph? system and follows the method originally described by Mathews et al.1and revised by Hutchinson and Diederichs2.Changes have been made to some of the tables provided by Barton3and to the stress analysis suggested by Hutchinson and Diederichs2. In addition, the logistical regression analysis has been applied to databases, formed using the suggested analyses, for three support resistances and risk levels established.

"This paper investigates the conditions leading to the indefinite termination of production in four critical primary panels at an underground coal mining operation, the observed shortcomings in the mining approach, and the proposed strategy to mine through the affected panels. Initial assessment of the abandoned panel conditions indicated time-dependent strata failure,(i.e. bolted roof failure overrunning intersections), which occurred from mere minutes to up to four weeks post-production, with and without prior warning of failure. This prompted the constant re-supporting of back areas, which raised safety and productivity concerns. Investigation of the initial mining conditions revealed that the failures were due to a critical combination of factors, the chief of which was isolated horizontal stress. Other factors that were initially overlooked by the mine (i.e. influence of hydraulic stress, misinterpretation of borehole data), resulted in the conditions being described as abnormal. Remedial actions were determined, and in so doing, a new strategic approach was formulated to thoroughly address all failure concerns. The four panels were explicitly planned to serve as the main intake and return airways for the recently commissioned secondary ventilation shaft, as well as providing access to millions of tons in proven coal reserves. It is thus imperative to mine the panels. A feasibility study showed that the proposed strategy set for implementation would be financially viable. A201 aluminium alloy is a high strength casting alloy with a nominal composition of Al-4.6Cu-0.3Mg-0.6Ag. It is strengthened by the O(Al2Cu) phase and the ??(Al2Cu) phase during heat treatment. Further strengthening of this alloy system can be obtained through the addition of transition elements, but care must be taken as other elements might have adverse effects on the mechanical properties. The objective of this study is to determine the influence of Mn on the tensile properties of rheo-processed Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy A201. ThermoCalc software was used to predict the different phases that can be expected in the alloys, and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to investigate the actual phases that formed. The influence of these phases on tensile properties is quantified. SEM and ThermoCalc revealed that there is an increased amount of the Al20Cu2Mn3 with increasing Mn. The tensile properties showed that high amounts of Mn do have adverse effects on the tensile properties of alloy A201, especially the ductility. 3D seismic surveys have become a well-accepted method of imaging sub-surface geology in the Bushveld Basin. Because both the seismic sources and receivers are placed at surface, most surveys are limited to imaging faults with >=7 m throw. However, some areas such as shaft infrastructure can benefit from the ability to detect smaller structures prior to shaft sinking. Borehole radar and logs such as the acoustic televiewer can identify these structures in the shaft barrel, but not within -200 m from the shaft. Therefore, Anglo Platinum has developed the method of high-resolution 3D vertical seismic profiles (VSPs) for structural sterilization of shaft sites prior to shaft sinking. VSPs utilize a surface source and sub-surface receivers deployed down a borehole. This means that seismic energy goes through the near surface only once, and therefore suffers less frequency loss than when both source and receivers are on surface. Furthermore, VSPs can record 3 component (3C) data which comprises P wave, Sh (horizontal) and Sv (vertical) wavemodes. Because S waves travel at about 0.6 of the velocity of a P wave, shorter wavelengths and therefore higher resolutions are possible using S wave data. VSPs were first used in their one dimensional, zero offset, mode to correlate borehole geology with seismic stratigraphy within seismic surveys. This showed that VSPs record -30% higher frequencies than surface seismic surveys. The program then applied two dimensional VSPs to the problem of imaging geological structure close to a borehole. 2D VSPs confirmed that high frequency results could be achieved, and that this enabled a more accurate image of the Merensky Reef than could be achieved by surface seismic data. Finally, the program has achieved the successful recording and processing of 3D VSP data, with both compressional and shear wavemodes giving a high resolution structural result. Although P wave data gives -30% frequency improvement over surface seismic surveys, S wave data can give as much as 80% improvement, further improving the structural image achieved. The high fixed costs of VSP surveys mean that they should ideally be run in multi-client batches, which can reduce the per borehole cost by up to 50%. Their application is anticipated to be on high value capital infrastructure with a geological risk from faults which are not imaged by surface seismics-generally in the sub-7 m range. Support system design for tunnels and underground excavations has for many years relied heavily on the use of rock mass classification systems and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion as a means for characterizing rock mass behaviour. Because of their development, both the GSI system and the Hoek-Brown criterion admirably characterize most ?normal? rockmasses from the viewpoint of their behaviour for rock excavations. They, however, run into difficulties when applied at the two ends of the rock competence scale. This is largely because block size and incipient strength are such that rockmass behaviour in these domains tends not to be controlled by interblock shear strength but rather by material strength. At the low end of the rock competence scale (UCSi <<15 MPa and GSI generally <30) discontinuities play less of a role and rock mass strength tends to matrix strength. Similarly, at the high end of the scale (GSI >>65, mi>>15), because discontinuities are now widely spaced, block size becomes so significant that again, intact material behaviour rather than the fracturing becomes the dominant factor controlling rock mass strength. In this paper several case examples are presented to illustrate the application of the high-end (spalling) and low-end (weak ground) transition Hoek-Brown relationships proposed by Carter, Diederichs and Carvalho (2007) as a basis for better defining rockmass behaviour at the extreme ends of the rock competence scale.

The selection of an underground mining method stems from a multivariate analysis that considers geomechanical, geological, economic, and operational parameters. Even after identifying the most compatible method, there is no assurance that the mining company will achieve the best performance. The geological complexity of some deposits requires adaptations of methods described in the literature to obtain more selectivity and reduce mining waste. There are some studies on geometry of underground structures, but a methodology that describes an adaptation of a room-and-pillar mining method for ore bodies with down-dip varying from 20° to 25° is novel. The present work aimed to reduce dilution by adapting the traditional room-and-pillar mining method (TRP) to inclined ore boLittle attention has been paid to the rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa after their lifespan. This paper aims to explore management gaps in legislation that have resulted in the non-rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa. There is growing evidence that supports the distressing effects of mining on people living around these mines in the North West Province. This paper was motivated by the current socio-economic status quo of old mining towns, the influx of illegal miners (Zama Zamas), severe environmental damages, and the violence associated with derelict mines. Underpinning this research was an ecosystem approach and integrated resources management principles, which formed the foundation for the decision-making process.The researcher used a mixed-method approach and employed convergent techniques. A semi-structured instrument was used to collect data from 200 respondents. The results indicated that there is a dire need for community-based consultative processes, and an absence of clear guidelines for derelict and ownerless mines to pressure mine management to adhere to rehabilitation standards. Moreover, the mining charter is ambiguous regarding policy implementation, budgetary allocation, and duration of the rehabilitation of these mines. The paper concluded that management challenges associated with derelict mines can be reduced if all stakeholders follow the guidelines as outlined in the environmental legislative framework (NEMA) of South Africa while being open to innovations in line with international best practices. It also contributes towards the development of guidelines for the management and implementation of legislation related to derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa from a philosophical, theoretical, and policy perspectivedies. This new method is entitled short-hole room-and-pillar (SHRP). The equations that measure the dilution are defined according to the geometry of stopes and openings. The results comprise comparative analyses of the operational and planned dilutions to measure the performance of the SHRP method. The average operating dilution of the SHRP method was more than five times lower than the planned dilution according to the TRP method. Low operational dilution indicates high selectivity of the method and its potential to reduce underground mining tailings.

This expansion has been largely driven by changes in ?Political climate ?Fiscal and legal regimes ?Exploration approaches ?West African geology. Major regional mapping and geochemical surveys by the UNDP, and the BRGM in the late 1970s and early 1980s laid the foundation for the rapid development of mineral exploration and resources during the past decade. An additional driving impetus was the discovery by native artisanal miners of many significant new gold occurrences at Libiri, Essakan, Bouda and Tirahori, during the great droughts of the late seventies and early eighties.

Zimbabwe Alloys has been producing Low Carbon Ferrochrome since 1953. A number of operational and technical advances have been made since then. Some of these advances improved production significantly. Process control, however, remained a challenge not only in the production process itself but also in the handling of finished product. In addition the handling of the slag created an environmental problem. Process control issues were addressed by Zimbabwe Alloys Limited and Japan Metal & Chemicals (JMC) entering into a Technical Transfer Agreement. The aim of the technical transfer was to improve production, alloy quality and, thereby, the financial performance of Zimbabwe Alloys. In addition, the Low Carbon Ferrochrome production process was made environmentally friendlier by modifying the final slag handling methodology. The aspects that are covered and discussed in this paper are, ladle refractory lining changes, improved control of the process, changes in the alloy casting methodology and granulation of the final slag. The improved control of the process was enhanced by the conversion from ladle duplexing to argon purging, introduction of on-line sampling and introduction of second stage process. The combined effect of the above was a significant improvement on on-grade material production, production efficiencies, unit cost of production and a cleaner working environment.

This paper provides an overview of possible approaches for structuring the ventilation systems for mines that will become operational within the next decade. Features addressed in the paper include: aspects of airway design and layout in the absence of centralized vertical return shafts, the impact of using diesel-powered trackless equipment in conjunction with conveyor belts in the development and production phases of the project, and the need to balance increasing electrical power costs against the requirement for reduced capital expenditure. The paper provides brief descriptions of the strategies employed in real-life situations and presents an overview of various operational parameters affecting the design of ventilation systems that will be used as ?platforms? for much deeper mines in the future.

Current mine production planning, scheduling, and allocation of resources are based on mathematical programming models. In practice, the optimized solution cannot be attained without examining all possible combinations and permutations of the extraction sequence. Operations research methods have limited applications in large-scale surface mining operations because the number of variables becomes too large. The primary objective of this study is to develop and implement a hybrid simulation framework for the open pit scheduling problem. The paper investigates the dynamics of open pit geometry and the subsequent material movement as a continuous system described by time-dependent differential equations. The continuous open pit simulator (COPS) implemented in MATLAB, based on modified elliptical frustum is used to model the evolution of open pit geometry in time and space. Discrete open pit simulator (DOPS) mimics the periodic expansion of the open pit layouts. Function approximation of the discrete simulated push-backs provides the means to convert the set of partial differential equations (PDEs), capturing the dynamics of open pit layouts, to a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Numerical integration with the Runge-Kutta scheme yields the trajectory of the pit geometry over time with the respective volume of materials and the net present value (NPV) of the mining operation. A case study of an iron ore mine with 114 000 blocks was carried out to verify and validate the model. The optimized pit limit was designed using Lerchs-Grossman?s algorithm. The best-case annual schedule, generated by the shells node in Whittle Four-X yielded an NPV of $449 million over a 21-year mine life at a discount rate of 10% per annum. DOPS best scenario out of 2 500 simulation iterations resulted in an NPV of $443 million and COPS yielded an NPV of $440 million over the same time span. The hybrid simulation model is the basis for future research using reinforcement learning based on goal-directed intelligent agents.

The feedwell performance in gravity thickeners and clarifiers relies on the efficient mixing between solid particles and flocculant to achieve effective flocculation, as well as energy dissipation of the incoming feed stream. A population balance-computational fluid dynamics (PB-CFD) model has been developed and validated to provide new insights into the operation and performance of industrial feedwells. In particular, the PB-CFD model enables the efficacy of the main functions of a feedwell to be investigated for a wide range of feedwell designs and process conditions. This paper describes how PB-CFD was used in the design and development of a new feedwell concept for the flocculation of particles in a solid-liquid stream. The patented feedwell design includes an upwardly converging flow diverter to create two separate compartments for energy dissipation and flocculation. PB-CFD simulations of this simple and easy-to-retrofit feedwell design illustrate a superior performance in terms of flocculation and energy dissipation compared to typical feedwells over a wide range of flow conditions. The potential benefits include reduced flocculant consumption, better de-aeration, greater stability and the ability to cope with a wider variation in volumetric throughput, better flocculation and fines capture, and a more symmetrical discharge that may also offer improved overflow clarity in some applications. The new feedwell design has been installed in a full-scale thickener at an Anglo American Platinum site in South Africa. A number of operational factors complicate this application, but indications are that the new feedwell has led to improvements in stability and underflow properties.

The thermodynamic activity of MnO was measured in MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slags that are typically encountered in the production of manganese-containing stainless steels. A gas equilibration-quenching technique was employed in measuring the activities. Activities of Mn in Pt-Mn alloys were redetermined at 1600ºC, which reconfirmed earlier results of strong negative deviations. MnO activities were then measured by equilibrating slags of various compositions based on a statistical experimental design procedure with Pt-Mn alloys under controlled partial pressure of oxygen in MnO saturated platinum crucibles at 1600ºC. Activities of MnO were found to increase with increasing concentration of MnO, basicity and CaO to MgO ratio. Two multi-coefficient regression models were developed to predict the activities and activity coefficients of MnO in slags at 1600ºC. Keywords: activity, MnO, slag

"For effective steel refining in the ladle (secondary steelmaking) the amount of steelmaking slag that is transferred from primary steelmaking must be limited, because the steelmaking slag contains iron oxide, manganese oxide, and phosphorus oxide. Adverse effects of slag carry-over include increased consumption of deoxidizers, phosphorus pick-up by the steel, and increased ladle refractory wear. Infrared imaging at longer wavelengths is an effective non-contact method to detect slag in the tapping stream. Various devices are used to shut off the tapping stream rapidly. These include slag darts, pneumatic slag stoppers, and slide gates for steelmaking converters, and eccentric bottom tapping for electric arc furnaces. IntroductionOxygen converters and electric arc furnaces are used for primary steelmaking. For both process types, the product (liquid crude steel) has a similar composition: largely liquid iron, with around 800–1000 parts per million (ppm, by mass) dissolved oxygen and low but significant concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The steel is tapped into a ladle, which serves as the refining vessel to adjust the final steel composition and temperature before casting.Some steelmaking slag is inevitably tapped with the liquid steel. The mass of steelmaking slag tapped with the steel is termed ‘slag carry-over’. Controlling and limiting slag carry-over from steelmaking is a primary requirement for clean steel production (Fandrich, Lüngen, and Wuppermann, 2008). Steel cleanliness refers to limiting the concentrations of dissolved impurities (such as nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulphur) and of nonmetallic inclusions (oxides, sulphides, and nitrides) in liquid steel and in the final solid steel product. Of these, the strongest effect of slag carry-over is on the content of dissolved phosphorus in the liquid steel"

Falls of Ground is one of the highest causes of incidents, accidents and fatal injuries in our mines today. These falls of ground may occur as soon as the face is exposed after blasting or after machine cutting. The falls of ground can also occur after support has been installed. There are many reasons why these falls occur before and after supporting of the face. It is therefore important to support the exposed face as soon as possible to prevent the falls of ground. It is also very important to support the face with the correct support products and to support the face as designed and required by the mining engineers. The possible reasons for falls of ground, possible support methods and the products available will be discussed in this presentation. In typical conventional narrow vein stoping operations, the use of conventional temporary support components to offer some support to workers, whilst the permanent and generally more elaborate support system gets installed or constructed, still results in injuries to people. This study investigates the feasibility of using waste iron slag, the by-product from a mineral sands processing works, in road construction. The study includes the different options investigated for the treatment of a leachate that is produced during the cooling of the iron slag, prior to processing. It also reviews the reasons for choosing the current treatment option that is being trialed. Cooling the iron slag with water results in the formation of a leachate with a high pH and high sulphide concentration. This leachate can seep into the ground and, over time, it will contaminate the ground water. A system was designed to collect and treat the leachate to prevent contamination of surrounding natural water sources. Numerous leachate treatment options were investigated to find cost effective method of treatment After cooling, the iron slag is passed through an iron recovery plant and the unsaleable product is placed on a dumpsite. Rain percolates through the dumpsite, which can result in the formation of a leachate that can contribute to a contaminated plume. After extensive testwork, it was found that the dumpsite, which was leached of contaminants, could be screened and used as a G5material (specifications in Table II) in road construction. The initial challenge was to establish that this material was environmentally safe for use in this particular application. Approval from the Department of Water Affairs (DWAF) was required for the testwork and then for the long-term use of this material in the construction industry. The following challenge involved establishing a market for the material. Construction companies in the area were reluctant to change to a new product that was not naturally occurring. The economics of this project are extremely sensitive to transport costs and hence only projects within a specified radius can be supplied with the Black Top Gravel (BTG). This project is not are venue generator, but it does save the money that would be required to manage the dump, and it reduces the closure costs.

Based on the geological-geometric characterization of the basaltic rock at the site of a factory for chemical products situated in the Southern region of Brasil, and on results of a significant number of packer tests, the principal directions of flow were estimated, taking into consideration the intersection and the orientation of the joints and the amount of contaminant flow measured in each interval. The tests were performed using the multi-packer hydraulic multitest probe of IPT (HMTP) instrumented with an electric conductivity meter. A method of analysis for three-dimensional evaluation of the amount of contaminant flow in the area was proposed for future mitigation of the problem. Basé sur une caractérization géologique-géotechnique de la roche basaltique existant sur un site dune fabrique de produits chimiques située au sud du Brésil et sur les resultants dún nombre significantif déssais du type packer, les directions principales d´écoulement ont été estimées en considerant l´intersection et orientation des joints et la quantité de contaminant mesurée sur chaque intervale d´essais. Ceux-ci ont été realizes en utilisant une sonde multipacker developée au IPT – São Paulo (HMTP) instrumentée avec un mesureur de condictivité électrique. Une méthode d´analyse 3-D pour l´évaluation du transport du contaminant sur ce site a été proposée pour une future mitigation du problème. Auf Grund der geologischen Struktur des Basalts auf dem Gelände einer chemischen Fabrik in Südbrasilien und der Ergebnisse einer ansehnlichen Zahl von Pumpversuchen wurden die Hauptfließrichtungen bestimmt unter Berücksichtigung des Kluftgefüges und der in jedem Intervall gemessenen Menge kontaminierten Wassers. Die Versuche erfolgten mit dem im IPT entwickelten Verfahren (HMTP) mit Mehrfachpackern und elektrischen Leitfähigkeitsgebern. Ein analytisches Verfahren zur dreidimensionalen Ermittlung der Mengen kontaminierten Wassers wurde für die künftige Befassung mit dem Problem entwickelt.
