In 2009 Newmont Mining Corporation?s annual global spend on grinding media reached $94M USD, having doubled in the five years since 2004. The major contributing factor to the spend escalation during this period was unit consumable price, with total media consumption also rising as a function of annual ore tonnes milled. In an effort to better understand and manage the growth of this expenditure a significant supply chain management program was implemented. This was complemented by a series of technical initiatives focussed on grinding media specifications, quality management and the prediction of grinding media wear rate as a function of physical ore characteristics. This paper discusses the methodology and outcomes of these activities.

Long touted as Australia?s fourth uranium mine the sediment-hosted Honeymoon Uranium Project is close to commercial production using insitu-leach mining methods. Uranium mineralisation occurs as pitchblende coatings on unconsolidated quartz sand and gravels within a stacked aquifer system in a buried palaeochannel located in the Curnamona Region of South Australia. A final NI43-101 Feasibility Study is close to completion which has included extensive delineation drilling using PFN technology to accurately measure uranium grade and distribution. This data integrated with a detailed 3D sedimentalogical model is being used to optimise wellfield and plant design.

Under the oxidizing conditions of the McClean Lake Tailings Management Facility (TMF) hydrocarbons entrained on the surface of tailings material from mill processes are gradually converted to soluble bicarbonate ion. This has been observed to be a process occurring over approximately three years likely encouraged by the presence of a microbiological community within the tailings mass and in the water column. A recent tailings sampling campaign has provided evidence that bicarbonate ion is participating in the conversion of gypsum to calcite. In older tailings, equilibrium with calcite appears to be controlling the terminal bicarbonate ion concentration.

Mineralogical controls exert significant control over the extraction of uranium from its ores. Uranium speciation, associated mineralogy, deportment and uranium mineral availability are all factors of consideration when assessing leachibility. This study presents data from laboratory uranium extractions undertaken on several contrasting uranium ores from a wide range of orebodies. The results provide insight into the mineralogical factors of importance when considering uranium extraction. These results are presented within the wider context of geometallurgy and demonstrate how geometallurgical assessment, even at an early stage of mine development, can greatly assist in the design of a suitable extraction scheme.

Bien que le système de ventilation du Puits Penna soit de taille imposante et que plus de $30M y seront engloutis pour son développement, aucun budget spécifique n?avait été préalablement consenti pour refroidir l?air acheminé aux places de travail dans la partie profonde de la mine. Le système de ventilation a été conçu en deux étapes distinctes : le réseau du haut de la mine lequel dessert jusqu?à 1550 m de profondeur et le réseau du bas de la mine (de 1550 m à 2200m) qui a été créé ultérieurement. Le réseau inférieur a été imaginé de façon à acheminer l?air frais directement au gisement et de permettre l?évacuation aux extrémités afin de rejeter l?air chaud immédiatement après l?avoir utilisé. Au total, lorsque le réseau de ventilation sera complété, plus de 670 m3/s d?air sera véhiculé dont jusqu?à 495 m3/s pour la partie inférieure de la mine considérant une capacité totale maximum de 710 m3/s en utilisant la mine adjacente.

"IntroductionPortland cement is produced by burning an accurately proportioned mixture (raw feed) of finely ground limestone, silica, alumina, and iron oxide. The kiln discharge (clinker) is a chemically complex mixture of calcium silicates, aluminates and ferrites which when ground and blended with from 2 to 5 percent of calcium sulphate is sold as Portland cement.ManufactureThe most common raw materials are limestone and clay or shale. The raw mix is finely ground and heated to about (2600°F) 1430°C to decompose the calcium carbonate and combine the calcium oxide with silica, alumina and iron to form a partly fused clinker. The clinker is then ground, usually with a small proportion of calcium sulphate (gypsum), which regulates set. Cements with special properties are produced by varying the oxide composition and also by adding small amounts of chemical agents at the clinker-grinding stage or later.Clinker is manufactured by either wet or dry process methods. In the wet process, raw materials are prepared, blended and fed to the kiln as a water slurry (about 30-35% water) . Dissolution characteristics of metals vary significantly when they form alloys with other elements. Because hydrometallurgical processes are essential in separation and refining of non-ferrous metals, it is important to study behaviors of alloys in aqueous solutions. The authors have studied dissolution characteristics of precious metals in acid solutions using electrochemical measurement. When precious metals are alloyed with Zn, its dissolution is promoted by an increase in surface area caused by the preferential dissolution of this metal. The electrochemical study also revealed that precious metals dissolved from some alloys at unusually negative potentials; the underpotential dissolutions are explained by activations of these metals in the dealloying.

Originally developed as a step change in ultrafine grinding efficiency, the IsaMill™ has made inroads into conventional ball mill and tower mill mainstream grinding duties during the last 5 years - beginning with the Anglo Platinum mainstream grinding projects in South Africa. At the 2006 SAG Conference, plant testwork on the incorporation of IsaMill™ technology into the McArthur River (Northern Territory, Australia) Pb/Zn primary grinding circuit was reported. The IsaMill™ has now become an integral component of that circuit, treating up to 1mm top size feed and directly producing P80 45 µm rougher flotation feed. Two 1.1 MW IsaMills™ are now used in this duty contributing to a 27% increase in overall plant throughput and a reduction in rougher feed size distribution. In this paper, we report on the current state of development and performance of the IsaMill™ in the primary grinding duty at McArthur River and also consider future directions.

In the flotation of Rare Earth Element (REE) bearing minerals, oxalic acid is reportedly acting both as a depressant and pH modifier. Testing has established the significance of oxalic acid in the flotation process however its specific role in either the recovery or selectivity of REE over their gangue minerals is not well understood. Pulp pH reduction trials with alternative acids have not shown the same effect on the REE mineral recovery or the depression of gangue phases. This work examines the effect of oxalic acid on the surface of gangue minerals (quartz and carbonates (dolomite and calcite)) in a series of conditioning tests. Gangue surface analyses by TOF-SIMS indicate that oxalic acid inhibits the transfer of secondary ions generated during the conditioning process from one mineral phase to another. In this regard, the oxalate anion acts to fix ions in solution through chelation, limiting their participation in surface adsorption.

ABSTRACT: Joseph (2002) introduced passive seismic monitoring to measure mining equipment performance. This paper evaluates the potential of passive seismic monitoring to correlate mining equipment operation with oil sands surface response, with a mining hauler as the seismic source. When applied to moving haulers, this action–reaction approach is complex. Vibrations from on-board equipment, such as pumps and tires, dirty the signal with noise. To facilitate any correlation, the signal must be cleaned up. Existing geophysical analytical techniques were manipulated to evaluate the noise problem and to filter sufficiently to permit an evaluation of whether a mining equipment action–ground response relationships in fact discernable.

Ce document présente une méthode hybride de long trou favorisant une méthode de minage initiale par chambre-magasin et complétée par une méthode de minage long trou. Cette méthode a été adaptée suite à plusieurs facteurs tels qu?une géologie complexe, une rareté de mineur d?expérience et un haut taux de roulement de main d?oeuvre spécialisée. Cette méthode a permis d'excellents résultats par rapport à la dilution. De plus, la récupération de pilier à haute teneur par forage long trou sera expliquée. Cette méthode permet aussi de récupérer le minerai qui est resté accroché dans les chantiers chambre-magasins. Introduction : La mine Géant Dormant est une mine filonienne d?or située à environ 80km au nord de la ville d?Amos au Québec. Elle est en opération depuis 1988 et à la fin de 2007, elle a produit près de 885 000 onces d?or à partir d?environ 2 400 000 tonnes de minerai pour une teneur moyenne d?environ 11,5g /t Au. Cette mine est la propriété d?IAMGOLD Corporation depuis l?acquisition de Cambior par cette dernière au mois de novembre 2006. Elle emploie 151 employés permanents et environ 41 entrepreneurs.

"The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum porphyry mine, majority owned and operated by Freeport- McMoRan Copper & Gold, is located 30 km southwest of Arequipa Peru. The concentrator, which produces copper and molybdenum concentrates, started operating in late 2006 with a 108,000 tpd design capacity, processing primary sulfide ore (mainly chalcopyrite and molybdenite). Plant capacity was recently increased to 120,000 tpd. The comminution circuit consists of one 60” x 113"" primary crusher, four MP-1000 secondary crushers in closed circuit with dry screens, four 2.4m x 1.6m High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) in closed circuit with wet screens, and four 7.3m x 11m gearless ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones. The HPGR circuit is fed by the Secondary Crushing circuit product at a T80 of 35 millimeters, and the HPGR circuit product feeds the Ball Mill circuit at a T80 of 3000 microns.This paper describes operating experiences with HPGRs during these first four years highlighting improvements in operating practices and presentation of data regarding operational efficiencies, also discussed are the primary benefits provided by HPGRs such as production of micro fractured particles, reduced ore Bond Work Index, and reduced power consumption. Cerro Verde represents the first installation of HPGRs in both the copper industry and large scale hard rock mining."

The Molopo Farms Complex is a major, layered ultramafic/mafic, early Proterowic intrusion which is totally covered by sediments of the Karoo and Kalahari Fonnations and situated in southern Botswana and northeastern South Africa. The approximately 3000 m thick, generally fine- to medium-grained ultramafic and mafic cumulates are intrusive into equivalents of Thmsvaal Supergroup sediments and lavas. Multiphase defonnation resulted in tilting and segmentation of the Complex into individual tectonic blocks. Sr isotopes document at least two chemically distinct parental liquids which interacted in a complex manner to form an approximately 1000 m thick rhythmically layered succession which straddles the ultramafic/mafic boundary. Repeated mixing resulted in a complex cryptic layering pattern and numerous sulfide-enriched layers which contain significant PGE+Au concentrations.

"Representatives of various industries and the Canadian coast Guard formed a Bulk Cargoes Committee three years ago. In 1976 and 1978, I have attended the meeting which take place once per year here in Ottawa as representative of the Canadian Mineral Processors, Dave Hendricks from Granisle accepted the charge in 1977. Our Secretary, Bob Bruce, has suggested repeatedly that I report to the Membership on the deliberations to this group. Twice I found good excuses; this year I did not. I was reluctant to address you since the Committee's deliberation proceeded at a pace which might be identified as Government squared. The Committee advises a Government agency which in turn negotiates with foreign Government agencies.At the outset, I will describe the developments which led to the formation of the Committee and its purpose.The Canadian Mining Industry ships annually millions of tons of products to overseas customers; be it iron ore, coal, fertilizer, or base metal concentrates. Most loadings are in vessels of foreign registry and all will be directly affected by Canadian or International regulations of the transport of such bulk commodities. The major shipping nations are members of an Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO). This organization elaborates regulations which govern shipment of all cargo, bulk materials and concentrates included. At IMCO'S deliberations, Canada has one vote, one voice on the Consultative Committee and is represented by our Coast Guard. The Coast Guard has over the years been in contact with industries when discussions concerned shipment of bulk cargoes. In the early sixties, a ""Concentrate Committee"" did exist. It consisted of metallurgists from a number of mining companies and Government representatives. This committee was instrumental in the development of what became known as the ""Concentrate Code"", legislation which has evolved into the Canadian Bulk Cargoes Code as it is known today. The concepts of the flow moisture point and transportable moisture limit originated from its work. Incidentally, both criteria are widely accepted and utilized world-wide. The Concentrate Committee faded away once the Concentrate Code has been adopted."

"Oxidation of pyrrhotite prcxiuces sulphuric acid which in turn leaches out heavy metals, resulting in acidic contaminated seepages. The establishment of a marsh on top of the pyrrhotite would result in an anaerobic sediment, which should prevent further oxidation of the pyrrhotite. Initial data indicates that concentrations of sulphates and heavy metals in the seepage water are greatly reduced. Further hydrogeological studies are required however, to determine if metal and acidic loadings to the environment have increased.L'oxidation du sulfure de fer produit de l'acide sulfurique qui a son tour attaque les métaux ayant pour resultat une contamination d'acide et de métal des eaux d'infiltration. As the pH decreases, heavy metals become more soluble resulting in contaminated seepages to ground and surface waters.By creating a marshland on top of the pyrrhotite, an anaerobic intermediate layer should form between the organic covering and the tailings, preventing the oxidation process from progressing.In September 1986, Falconbridge Limited implemented a tailing reclamation project that involved creating a marshland on top of pyrrhotite tailings. The following paper will discuss and illustrate the preliminary results obtained during the sampling period of May to September 1987."

Smelting of copper concentrate generates a significant amount of dusts which are collected in electrostatic precipitators. This material, which is a complex oxide of Cu, Fe, S, As, Sb, Bi and others, is difficult to recirculate into the smelting process due to the reported high concentration of arsenic. However, the dust also has concentration of copper above 10wt %, aside from reported contents of silver corresponding as much as 25wt% of the total inventories of this element in the smelters. Thus, it is of economic and environmental interest the development of a process able to reduce the concentration of arsenic in the dust and produce a material suitable to be recirculated into the smelting process. The present experimental work shows the results of a process of dust sulfidization-oxidition able to remove more than 65wt% of the arsenic present. INTRODUCTION Copper sulfide deposits worldwide exhibit increasing concentrations of arsenic. One case of interest would be the copper ores from the northern zone of Chile, which report high concentrations of enargite (Cu3AsS4) (Revista química, 2015) (Latinominería, 2014). The obtained concentrate from this ore is treated in a Fluidized Bed Roaster, producing calcines with low concentration of arsenic (<0.5 wt% As). This material is suitable to be treated in a Flash Furnace. At the roasting process, the arsenic is volatilized and then precipitated as fine particles of complex oxides. Most of this particulate material is removed from the gas stream through a device called Electrostatic Precipitator (Minería chilena, 2014). The experimental results reported in the literature indicate that arsenic present in these particulate materials (or dusts) cannot be eliminated in oxidizing atmospheres (air) or with inert gases (N2) in a Fluidized Bed Roaster even at temperatures as high as 700°C. There is also information that even the recovery of valuable metals from the dust is difficult through hydrometallurgical processes (private communication). This is how in some foundries these dusts are considered environmental liabilities. "The avenues and degree of participation by aboriginals in the Canadian minerals industry have changed significantly during the thirty years of the author&apos;s career in that industry.The typical 1950s cycle of mineral industry involvement of a local non-Europeanized aboriginal was as an individual employee. The employment relationship would begin with the best of intentions by both parties of permanence and terminate when the pioneering employee was unable to reconcile the attendance behaviour required by the employer and the social-sharing behaviour demanded by family and friends.Cominco Ltd. has been a mine operator and developer in the North since the 1920s. Cominco&apos;s early experiences with employment of non-Europeanized natives at the Con Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories from 1938 to 1986 was a negative experience from both the employee and employer ends. A series of classic failures in employment of individual aboriginals was a large part of the history. A few Metis or natives from other areas were the permanent aboriginal employees at Con (2010). Racial prejudice was overt on the street in Yellowknife and, it can be assumed, in the workplace, as well.The history of aboriginal employment at the Pine Point, Northwest Territories operation (1964 to 1988) was somewhat better but also frustrating. The mine was equidistant (80 km) from the Dene communities of the Hay River Indian Reserve and Fort Resolution, both on Great Slave Lake. Despite a large aboriginal presence and many well-intentioned efforts, employment of aboriginals at Pine Point never got much beyond ten per cent. These would have been half local and half northern prairie aboriginals. One continuing success story was the railcar loading and covering crew led by Ed McKay, a local aboriginal. This predominantly aboriginal crew did its own recruiting and several are on Cominco pension."
