"An atmospheric process for the synthesis of scorodite(DMSP®)has beendeveloped,in which ferrous ions were oxidized by oxygen gas in the presence of pentavalent arsenic ions. Under optimum conditions, the synthesized scorodite (FeAsO4?2H2O) was well crystallizedand the crystals were faceted; the particle sizes were as large as 15 to 20 µm. In thisstudy, iron (II) sulfate heptahydrate (FeSO4·7H2O), arsenic (V) acid (60mass%H3AsO4) solution, and distilled water were used to prepare the original experimental solution (700 ml), in which the contents of Fe(II) and As(V) were 55.9 g/L and 50.0 g/L, respectively. The effects of various synthesis conditions, such as the type of oxidizing gas (oxygen or air), gas injectionrate, temperature, and the initial pH of the solution, on the size and shape of the scorodite particles wereinvestigated. From the experimental results, the changes in the shape of the scorodite particles wereclarified for each synthesis condition.INTRODUCTIONDOWA has developed a processfor synthesizing well-crystallized scorodite (FeAsO4•2H2O). "Historically, alot of jarosite was found in the leaching residue when leaching indium from secondary zinc oxide materials. The reasons for the formation of indium bearing jarosite were theoretically analyzed. The influence of controlling the acidity and the addition of reagents on the indium leaching yield during secondary zinc oxide processing was investigated. In order to increase the leaching yield of indium, a measure of controlling the creation and destruction of jarosite was proposed. The production data shows that the leaching yield of indium was increased from 60 to 96%, and the content of indium in leaching residue simultaneously decreased from 900g/t to 100–200g/t when implementing such controlling measures.INTRODUCTIONIndium does not occur as independent minerals in the earth’s crust and is mainly associated with complex sulphide minerals. Specifically some sphalerites can contain as much as 900g/t of indium. Most indium is recovered from by-products of copper, lead or zinc metallurgy. Therefore, the research on the recovery of by-products in non-ferrous metallurgy is important(Sinclair et al, 2006). The main technologies used for this objective in China include: •,pre-neutralization-reduction-precipitation indium process(Yu et al, 2008), •,countercurrent oxidizing acid leaching process and sulphation roasting-water leaching process(Cao, 2005), •,oxygen pressure acid leaching of zinc concentrate-P204 extraction process(Yang et al, 2006), •,doubleacid leaching-solvent extraction process on lead dross from a reverbatory furnace flue dust(Liu, 2003),•,an acid leaching-solvent extraction process on smelting ash(Zhouet al, 2005). Although high pressure and extreme conditions can be used to improve extraction from high iron bearing indium residues(autoclave processing), mild extraction with lower cost and lower environmental impact are preferred.This paper describes both how the indium extraction using mild conditions in a secondary zinc circuit was quite low and, how through XRD and chemical analysis jarosite formation was found as the main cause. The paper then proceeds to discuss a method for improving the leaching yield and the application of this method in industrial practice."

Chalcopyrite is by far the most abundant copper sulphide on Earth, but it has proved to be problematic in its processing by leaching, mainly related to its refractory nature, slow kinetic rates of dissolution and the formation of an inhibiting product layer on its surface during leaching. This study is focussed on the electrochemistry of chalcopyrite dissolution in acidic chloride system, which has recently gained attention as a feasible alternative to conventional sulphate media for chalcopyrite leaching. It is well understood that chalcopyrite dissolution from mineral grains depends strongly on the solution redox potential at the mineral surface as well as the composition of the product layer that may form on its surface. The chloride ions in solution support the Cu(II)/Cu(I) couple as the primary oxidant, as they can form complexes with the cuprous ions formed, increasing the dissolution rate. Additionally, these ions increase the potential range where chalcopyrite can be oxidized. The chemical reaction that occurs on the surface of chalcopyrite in chloride solutions in the presence of cupric ions will be characterized and the coulometry of the reaction will be reported to understand what is happening on the surface of chalcopyrite. Electrochemical experiments have been carried out to investigate the behaviour of mixed potential by open circuit potential (OCP) measurement for 30 minutes using sulphuric acid at pH 1 under nitrogen at 25⁰ C. The effect of chloride was analysed at 0, 20, 50 and 100 g/L and cupric ions from 0 to 50 g/L. The potentials obtained were then used to carry out chronoamperometry tests for a period of 30 minutes in absence of cupric ions. The mixed potential did not show a significant difference with an increase in cupric concentrations in the absence of chloride. Increased mixed potentials and current densities were observed at higher chloride and cupric concentrations. Chronoamperometry tests at those potentials were used to construct a voltammogram trace which has the same trend as a normal cyclic voltammogram but with much lower current densities. INTRODUCTION As a result of the depletion of copper oxides, the leaching of copper sulphide minerals has become the focus of many studies. Chalcopyrite, (CuFeS2) which is the most abundant of copper minerals, has proved to be challenging to process via hydrometallurgy, mainly related to its refractory nature, slow kinetic rates of dissolution and the formation of an inhibiting product layer on its surface, during leaching.

"The earliest gold-mining operations in Ontario included the Cordova, Deloro, and Sophia mines north of Lake Ontario (see for example, Miller and Knight, 1914). The Cordova deposit, worked intermittently between 1891 and 1940, is reported to have yielded 22 774 oz of gold from 127 670 tons of ore averaging 0.19 oz/ton Au (Gordon et al., 1979). The property remained inactive for many years. In 1988, Gunnar Gold Inc. and Mill City Gold Inc. conducted a drilling program along the main Cordova vein. The present study is based on core from three drill holes through the Cordova gabbro (Fig. 1) and the carbonate alteration zones enveloping the quartz-carbonate veins. The relatively narrow width of the alteration zone and the availability of continuous sections of core provided an opportunity to conduct a compact mineralogical-chemical study of carbonate alteration and its effect on the redistribution of rare earth elements (REEs). Although the Cordova deposit is not of great economic importance, this study has revealed a number of interesting features which are interpreted as resulting from processes that may be applicable to gold-bearing quartz vein deposits elsewhere.The Cordova gabbro is layered in places, varying from fine-to coarse-grained and in color from light gray (feldspathic) to dark gray-green (amphibolitic). However, layering within the section of the gabbro considered here and which hosts the Cordova gold deposit is mainly textural rather than compositional. Samples of unaltered gabbro selected for analyses were medium- to coarse-grained; amphibolitic and anorthositic phases were avoided as being less representative of the general chemical composition of the gabbro.The Cordova intrusion has undergone regional metamorphism and consists dominantly of actinolite and saussuritized plagioclase with smaller amounts of granular clinozoisite and flaky chlorite; minor quartz, ilmenite, titanite, apatite, and calcite are typically present. Some actinolite grains have irregular rims of pleochroic green hornblende that is optically continuous with the actinolite. Both chlorite and clinozoisite occur in two modes. Chlorite occurs as an alteration product of actinolite and as separate grains in the groundmass. Clinozoisite and albite occur together as regional metamorphic alteration products of original plagioclase crystals and as discrete grains in the matrix.The main gold-bearing quartz-carbonate occurrence occupies an easterly trending, steeply southward-dipping carbonatized shear zone up to 15 m wide and 700 m long. The gold occurs principally in irregular lenses and veins of quartz-carbonate up to a foot thick occupying the lower part of the schistose shear zone within the gabbro. This zone consists of chlorite, biotite, and carbonate and is flanked on both sides by chlorite-carbonate schist lacking biotite. The chlorite-carbonate schist in turn grades into regionally metamorphosed actinolite-bearing undeformed gabbro.The dominant sulfide within the quartz-carbonate lenses and in the surrounding schist is pyrite which occurs mainly as small cubes (1 mm to 2 mm) generally making up less than 10% of the rock. Rare blebs of chalcopyrite are present. Magnetite is common throughout the schist."

The campaign life of furnaces in the copper making industry is greatly affected by damage caused by normal operation cycling and abnormal conditions. Proper monitoring and assessment of the existing conditions and safe remaining life of the vessels and their refractory lining is key to prevent an unplanned early replacement. This paper presents an industry-proven refractory management program as well as a typical fitness-for-service assessment of a rotary vessel shell in order to extend the campaign life of copper making furnaces and enhance safety. The furnace refractory management system involves a comprehensive audit and monitoring program which has been successfully applied to several copper flash smelting furnaces over the past 15 years. The fitness for service assessment provides a methodology to estimate the remaining life of the steel components by evaluating the existing damage and future damage rate based on the historical survey data. The above practices can provide the operator with cost savings by extending the vessel campaign life in lieu of implementing more rigorous refractory lining and shell audits. INTRODUCTION Primary copper smelting is generally divided into two categories of flash smelting and open bath smelting. There are many different types of vessels that can be used to convert the copper concentrate to blister copper including, flash, Mitsubishi process, TSL (ISA/Ausmelt), SKS Bottom Blowing, Anode and Teniente/Noranda furnaces, reactors, and Peirce Smith converters. Each vessel has its own complex and intense environment which requires careful refractory and steel design to withstand the severe thermomechanical and thermochemical attacks within its campaign life. The campaign life of furnaces is greatly affected by damage caused by normal operation cycling and abnormal conditions. Proper assessment of the existing conditions and safe remaining life of the vessels and/or refractory lining is key to prevent an unplanned early replacement. This paper presents an industry-proven refractory management program as well as a fitness-for- service assessment methodology to estimate the remaining campaign life of copper making furnaces resulting in cost savings and enhanced safety of the operating vessels.

"IntroductionBasal Proterozoic quartz-pebble conglomerates are found both west of Elliot Lake, in Duncan, Jarvis and Aweres Townships, north of Sault Ste. Marie and to the east and northeast of Sudbury, Ontario. Locally, while well packed and pyrite-rich, they carry little to no uranium. Locally, they carry gold. These features generally are ascribed to variations in the source areas of the rocks.In two other areas of Canada, similar basal Proterozoic units contain quartz-pebble conglomerate beds with uranium.Sakami LakeLocation and HistoryThe Sakarni Lake uranium deposit is found in a narrow, northeast-trending, Archean greenstone belt located 95 miles southeast of Fort George, on James Bay, and 240 miles north of Matagami, Quebec (Fig. 1).The deposit was detected by Inco in 1971, during an airborne EM survey which carried a newly developed Inco spectrometer system flown at 450 feet. Ground investigation, in 1972, resulted in the discovery and sampling of quartz-pebble conglomerate which yielded assays as high as 0.19% U3O8.Extensive field exploration was conducted between 1972 and 1975. Sixty-five diamond drill holes, to a total of 13,969 metres, served to define the extent and economic potential of the conglomerates which extend over a total strike length of about eight kilometres."

"The H.B. Mine, a zinc-lead operation of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited (Cominco), is in south central British Columbia, on Sheep Creek, a west-flowing branch of the Salmon River. It is 3 miles by road from B.C. highway No. 6, 30 miles south of Nelson, B.C., with an excellent highway connection to the smelter city of Trail, 35 miles from the mine. The nearest permanent settlement is the village of Salmo, 7 miles distant by road. The mine is situated along a belt containing other important zinc-lead deposits, including those of the Canadian Exploration Company, 3 miles to the south, and the Reeves MacDonald mine, 9 miles distant again to the southwest.Deeply oxidized outcrops were located in 1907 on the north side of Sheep Creek valley by two prospectors named Horton and Benson. The property was given the name H.B., after the two discoverers, and there commenced a long and intermittent series of mining operations designed mainly to develop and extract oxidized lead-zinc ore. In 1925 a determined attempt was made by a British syndicate to develop a large tonnage of sulphide ore, but this ended in failure after some 3,000 feet of lateral development had been done. In 1927 Cominco acquired the mine, but it lay idle until 1946 when a geological study was followed by a program of surface drilling which encountered extensive sulphide mineralization. An underground development program revealed more details of the deposit, and sufficient ore was found to warrant construction of a 1,000-ton mill. Mine preparation and mill construction were completed by early 1953, but production was deferred due to low metal prices. The mine was finally brought into production early in 1955."

"THE HARDY MINE of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited is located in Lot 9, Concession 1, Levack Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, 20 miles northwest of the city of Sudbury, and a mile west of the town of Levack. The ore deposit is one of the many nickel-copper sulphide bodies found on, or near, the lower contact of the well-known Sudbury norite-micropegmatite irruptive, and is one of a family of ore deposits which occur on the northwest rim of the irruptive.The property was acquired by purchase in 1935. In the same year a magnetometer survey along the footwall contact of the norite, which is covered by about 150 feet of glacial sands and clays, first indicated the location of the orebody. Drilling from 1935 to 1942 outlined the extent of the ore. Shaft sinking was commenced in the fall of 1951, and the mine is now approaching full production at a rate of about 300,000 tons per year.There are several major differences between the geology of the Levack area and the Falcon bridge area, which lies at the opposite extremity of the irruptive, 28 miles to the east. The purpose of this paper is to describe the essential features of the geology of the Levack area as seen in the Hardy mine, and to supplement the recent papers on other properties in the Sudbury area by Davidson (1), Lochhead (2), and Yates (3).General GeologyA recent review of the regional geology and an extensive bibliography of the Sudbury area can be found in the two papers by H. "Large scale rock slides in deeply incised Alpine valleys are common hazards that can endanger human life, settlement areas and critical infrastructure such as highways, railways and reservoirs (Bonzanigo et al., 2007). In order to perform reliable forecasts of the behaviour of rock slides influenced by large dam reservoirs the geometry, the kinematics, the deformation behaviour and the hydrogeological situation need to be understood profoundly. Based on generic rock slide models the influence of the rock slide geometry on the stability as well as the impact of the buoyancy forces and water load of the reservoir at the toe of the slope are the main focus of this study. Various assumptions of hydraulic conductivity, groundwater conditions of the rock slide and impoundment depth of the reservoir are analysed using limit equilibrium approaches.Generally, deep seated rock slides are characterised by deformation along one or multiple shear zones where most of the measured total slope displacement localizes. Many large rock slides, especially those observed in foliated, mica-rich crystalline rock masses (e.g. paragneisses, mica schists, phyllites), do not fail suddenly or reach high velocities. Instead, many of them move slowly and reach velocities of centimetres per year or even less. Some show episodic accelerations, sometimes reaching alarming levels, but then subside to non-critical levels again. However, there is a potential that deep-seated rock slides fail rapidly, develop into far-reaching run-out rock flows, and cause catastrophic events. Whereas the role of triggers in promoting phases of acceleration is often understood, the same cannot be said regarding the kinematics and dynamic processes by which the rock slide mass decelerates, re-stabilises or accelerates to a catastrophic degree once the trigger impetus has been removed. Thus key questions of the presented work concern the geotechnical, geometrical and hydrogeological conditions under which a slowly moving rock slide is triggered to accelerate to irreversible, maybe dangerous velocities. The development of the sliding zone is generally influenced by pre-existing discontinuities such as brittle fault zones, shear and tensile fractures, foliation and bedding planes. These geological structures determine the geometry of the sliding zone which can either be rotational or translational. During the gravitationally induced failure process the geometry of the rock slide undergoes a change.Several observed post-failure geometries in metamorphic rocks show a concave topography in the middle to upper part of the rock slide and a typical convex or bulge-like topography at the toe of the slope (Zangerl et al., 2012). Whereas the sliding zone of the upper part of such a rock slide mass is rather steep and planar, the inclination of the sliding zone at the toe can be close to zero and act against the driving forces (Alonso et al., 2010). A shear zone that meets alluvial deposits at the foot of the slope encounters a stabilizing impact on the mechanical behaviour. This buttressing effect of alluvial sediments has a remarkable influence on the slope stability."

Pit Optimisation using the Lerchs Grossman algorithm has been successfully applied in many deposits. Pit shells often form the basis for scheduling. Pre-assigned costs may not accurately reflect the costs that strategic scheduling decisions are based on. This can affect all mines, but is particularly true for commodities requiring blending. Adoption of Maximiser technology addresses these cost based scheduling and blending challenges.

"The zinc deposits to be described are in Lemieux township a few miles south of the Tabletop mountains, in the central part of Gaspe peninsula, Quebec. Although they have not been worked, they constitute a potential source of zinc and lead and structurally are of considerable interest.GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE OCCURRENCEThe deposits are in sharp-walled quartz-carbonate veins and breccia zones carrying locally, and in varying amounts, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and specularite. Those so far investigated strike generally north-south, have steep dips, and cut through sediments of Lower Devonian age, mostly calcareous argillites or siltstones. Wall-rock alteration is negligible.BROADER STRUCTURAL FEATURESThe principal known occurrences are in the south-central part of a dome structure measuring 6 by 5 miles. The argillaceous sediments are overlain, on the flanks of the dome, by sandstones and lavas. These have been stripped from the central part of the dome, revealing the veins in the argillites beneath. The veins formed after the volcanics, but the fractures and breccia zones in which the deposits formed are confined mainly to the argillite series, presumably because of the greater strength of the lavas.The argillite series is cut by dykes, sills, and small stocks of diorite and acidic 'porphyries' that are older than the veins.THE FEDERAL HILL AREAThe distribution of known veins is shown in Fig. 1. The characteristic features of the veins are well illustrated by the Federal Hill area shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, and described below."

The power required to operate a ventilation system can be 25% to 50% of the total energy requirements of a mine. In an effort to reduce energy consumption, initiatives are being introduced at Vale Inco to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems with the objective of decreasing energy usage. One energy conservation measure being introduced is the use of variable frequency drive (VFD) technology for fan motor control. Advancement in technology is making VFD applications more of a standard in industry. The benefits include improved operating performance and system control, reduction in current peak demand, and optimized power usage. This paper describes the application of VFDs for main and auxiliary mine fans; and associated potential energy savings.

Abstract -Traditionally, samples collected for mineral deposit evaluation have been viewed without explicit reference to reliability, with the illusion that a true value is attainable from a few samples and verifications. For exploration, mineral deposit estimation and production quality control the following definition is proposed: "a sample is a small quantity of material relative to the geological mass it represents, collected according to a systematic procedure, of measurable reliability, from which the grade/quality of the mass which it represents may be estimated, based upon appropriate protocols. This paper will concentrate on the actual rock sampling process. Too often, sample size has been, and is still viewed as a matter of convenience, leaving out representivity considerations, despite the importance of samples on project estimation. Linear samples (chips, channels, drill), panel samples, broken rock or mining samples and very large samples are considered. Collection procedures and quality control protocols to improve the representivity of non-mechanical samples are proposed.

The JKRBT (JK Rotary Breakage Tester) is a newly developed impact breakage testing device for rapid ore breakage characterisation, and has recently been commercialised after a three year comprehensive validation study, involving five major mining companies and six industrialised JKRBT units deployed worldwide. Comparisons of breakage mechanisms and characterisation data between the JKRBT and the Drop Weight Tester (DWT) indicate that, despite the differences in the breakage modes, the JKRBT can provide statistically similar A*b parameters, by using a data reduction procedure which takes into account the difference in the number of contact points, strain rate and potential for secondary breakage. Feedback from the validation sponsors has indicated higher productivity and better repeatability of the JKRBT compared with the DWT. This better precision, combined with the JKRBT’s wider particle size capability and wider specific energy range, provide a more powerful tool, ideally suited to rapid mapping of ore hardness in geometallurgical and comminution applications.

A series of titiania- and silica-supported Au, Pt and Pt-Au catalysts prepared through different synthetic routes have been investigated in terms of their structural properties, adsorption of CO, and catalytic activity for the selective catalytic reduction of NO by propylene and the oxidation of and CO. Catalysts prepared by incipient wetness impregnation from individual Pt and Au precursors, exhibited characteristics very similar to those of monometallic Pt catalysts. This behavior is consistent with a model in which the two metals remain segregated due to their miscibility gap, and only Pt participates in the adsorption of CO and the reactions under consideration. In contrast, catalysts prepared from a Pt2Au4(C=CtBu)8 organo-bimetallic cluster precursor exhibited different behavior both in terms of CO adsorption and their catalytic activity for the three reactions examined. The combination of the kinetic, spectroscopic and structural characterization data suggests that in this case Pt and Au remain intimately mixed in the form of Pt-Au bimetallic particles, and that the presence of Au modifies the behavior of Pt.

A proposed method of applying high-speed, non-destructive part scanning technologies to the production process of UO2 (Uranium Dioxide) fuel pellets is presented. The scanning process examines each pellet individually for correct surface roughness and any surface imperfection or defects. Using optical scanning methods, which consist of laser and CCD camera technology, the complete circumferential surface of the pellet is examined to meet the reactor fuel bundle specifications.
