Conventional casting at low pouring temperature was employed to produce semisolid metal, SSM, billets of A356 Alloy. The deformation behavior of the as-cast SSM billets was studied using parallel plate compression viscometry. The compression tests were carried out at different applied pressures, and fractions solid. The rheological studies were conducted assuming the SSM slurry behaving like Newtonian and non Newtonian fluids respectively. "It is a truism that the metals, and particularly the precious metals tend to monopolize the attention of those interested £n the mineral industry. This is a tendency to be mildly, but actively and continuously combatted if we are to have a well-rounded mineral development." There are in the province of Ontario a number of industries centred about the non-metallic minerals. Too little is heard of the part these play in our industrial life. It is with the intention of showing what the gypsum industry is doing in Ontario that this paper is written. The writer lays no claim to any originality in the discussion and merely offers some material in an endeavour to assist in bringing about that &apos;well-rounded mineral development&apos; sought for Ontario. M. Y. Williams in his "The Silurian Geology and Faunas of Ontario Peninsula and Manitoulin and Adjacent Islands"1 in discussing the industries dependent on the Silurian rocks of south-western Ontario points out that "the splendidly ordered gypsum mine at Caledonia, formerly owned by the Alabastine Company of Paris, and now owned by the Ontario Gypsum Company, is a revelation to the average man, who disconnects mining entirely with this part of Ontario". This region is better known as one of the richest and most thickly settled agricultural areas in Canada.

Application of integrally bladed disks (blisks) is of increasing interest in compressors of aero engines. Blisks are preferred due to their potential for size and weight reduction, for increased performance and for reduced manufacturing costs compared to conventionally bladed disks. In case of a damage the blisk aerofoils cannot be simply replaced. If the damage is beyond acceptance or blending limits refurbishment is possible only by scrapping the whole blisk assembly, or more cost effective by the application of advanced weld repair methods. Weld repair of blisk aerofoils is challenging as it affects a critical part with specific requirements regarding its mechanical integrity, and as the accessibility is usually limited. The paper describes the ongoing development of advanced weld repair processes as part of a comprehensive repair strategy which have been developed for small-sized blisk assembly to give competitive maintenance cost.

Deep-seated landslides are characterized by slow time-dependent movements induced by constant gravitational creep, and periods of acceleration associated with stress changes within the rock and the preexisting fracture network. Natural stress changes are typically caused by seasonal variations in surface temperatures and groundwater pressures, but also by rare and more violent events such as earthquakes. These processes are responsible for cyclic loading and unloading that leads to rock mass damage, fatigue and progressive failure with time, and may explain sudden, unexpected rock slope acceleration phases. In this work, we present a set of distinct-element models to investigate and compare the role of hydromechanical fatigue and seismic fatigue in the history of a deep-seated landslide. Hydromechanical fatigue arises from the fluctuation of pore pressure in fractures accompanying periods of significant groundwater recharge. In alpine areas, there are usually one or two cycles per year associated with snow melt and intense rainfall periods. In the presence of a deep confined aquifer within the rock slope, the amplitude of pressure fluctuations may reach values of 0.25-0.5 MPa. Hydromechanical models considering such pressure changes are able to reproduce observed slope accelerations-decelerations phases. Substantial accelerations may occur even in the absence of a cycle of exceptional amplitude, depending on the current state of fatigue. At a given time, one or more fractures may be critically-stressed, and a small change in applied stress is enough to cause local failure and induce a crisis of enhanced slope acceleration. This is augmented if the rock slope contains planes of weakness associated with its tectonic history, glacial debuttressing, etc. The corresponding behaviour is analogous to laboratory experiments on rock and metal fatigue. Similar fatigue effects have also been proposed for repeated earthquake events in seismically active regions. Unlike hydromechanical stress changes that occur in a more localized portion of the rock slope, those induced by passing seismic waves involve the entire rock mass. Moreover, the frequency and amplitude of stress perturbations due to earthquakes are different than those induced by pore pressure variations, although both likely contribute in combination to the degradation and progressive failure of large deep-seated landslides when both are present. The results presented illustrate that: (1) assessment of slope stability near critical infrastructure (e.g., hydroelectric reservoirs) should not only consider static stability, but also failure mechanisms related to fatigue that evolve over time and may result in an apparently stable slope progressing towards a critical state due to relatively small but repetitive stress changes; and that (2) characterization of fatigue processes affecting a deep-seated landslide requires multiparametric continuous monitoring at different observation points.

The following paper deals with some of the aspects of the law as it relates to the oil and gas industry in the Province of Alberta, but it should be stated here that consideration of this large subject will be confined to discussion of only those laws, rules, and regulations which affect actual exploratory operations. The paper will not touch on those branches of the law which deal with such matters as income tax, customs, and other kind red subjects which are of a highly technical nature and which are more properly the field of the specialist. Generally speaking, any system of law consists of certain major components. There must be, firstly, a national authority capable of ensuring the existence of the state itself and of maintaining the stability and continuity of its institutions; secondly, a philosophy of government covering the relationship of the state to the individual and of the individuals to one another; thirdly, a body of law to effect the purposes of the philosophical principles; and, fourthly, a judiciary to arbitrate any disputes that may arise from such relationships. All of these components and the system itself are, of course, subject to a varying degree of modification with the changing times and with the influence upon them of other systems of law. Now. while it is true to say that all systems of law comprise these similar basic features, it is apparent that the end result of any two systems of law in their impact upon the individual may be quite different.

"Dominion No. 17 Colliery, of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, is located in the district of New Victoria, N.S., at the entrance to Sydney harbour.This Colliery was opened in 1882 to work a submarine area of the Harbour seam (see Figure 1). It was closed in 1921 and the mine, which has a make of water of approximately 250 gallons per minute, was allowed to fill.No. 18 Colliery, situated almost a mile to the east, was opened in 1938 to work the Phalen seam in this area with the intention, later, of driving a cross-measure tunnel to mine the section of the Harbour seam lying between No. 17 Colliery and the Princess Colliery of the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company, Limited.In 1945 it became necessary to open this area in the Harbour seam and a cross-measure tunnel was driven from the existing workings of No. 18 Colliery in the Phalen seam, which underlies the Harbour seam at a depth of 500 feet.The tunnel was started in 1946 and completed in 1948. The cost of opening this section, which contained only 6 1/2 million tons of coal, made imperative the recovery of all the available coal and precluded the maintenance of the large barriers that had been left in No. 17 Colliery for impounding the water, especially as the maintenance of these barriers would have meant the loss of 885,000 tons of coal, or 12.3 per cent of the whole tonnage available. Therefore, a study was made to determine the best means to dewater the 250 million gallons of water lying in the old No. 17 Colliery."

Electrolytic cells are used in electrowinning (EW) and electrorefining (ER) of non-ferrous metals such as zinc and copper, and are a critical part of the purification process. The cell is a large basin and has an electrolyte or aqueous solution, an anode and a cathode, an insulator, and incoming high amperage. Cells are exposed to unfavourable internal and external factors that have a direct impact on their lifespan. Their deterioration can be caused by incorrect polarity, insufficient magnitude, their construction, tension stress, thermal shock, corrosion and other, and their maintenance and replacement can be time-consuming, costly, difficult and environmentally unsafe. Occupational health hazards and dangers posed by the maintenance and removal of the cell should also be taken into consideration. Modifying the design and fabrication method of the cell, using chemical-resistant reinforcement, and increasing tensile and mechanical strength will defer maintenance for a very long time. This can be achieved by a double hull system that comprises full-length composite reinforcement, polymer concrete reinforced with fiberglass pultruded rods and rebars, fiberglass structural layers, and special resin matrices. This will provide protection against thermal shocks, corrosion, leakage, cracks. The design of this cell incorporates a lifting system that will afford quick and easy install without having to move a great number of cells in close proximity, since it is strong enough to stand on its own and not have to be bonded to adjacent cells. As well, the cell can be anchored with ease as it remains stable. This is especially important because space is limited to lift and manoeuver between the cell and the double-girder overhead travelling cranes. The lifting system can also prevent electrocution and loss in product quality, while increasing efficiency and safety in the workplace. Considerable savings in terms of production downtime are also part of the equation. INTRODUCTION Maintenance and replacement of electrolytic cells in electrowinning and electrorefining are operations that pose many challenges, health and safety concerns, and give rise to substantial operational costs. These problems have existed since time immemorial. Electrolytic cells are made of conventional concrete or polymer concrete, and because of the very nature of their composition and their exposure to severe and environmental conditions, their lifespan is short. Although polymer concrete is composed of high-quality materials, and has good thermal stability and resistance to chemicals, nonetheless, maintenance is frequently required in order to maintain the integrity of the cell and to ensure the quality of refined metals. Repairing concrete is a non-permanent solution as cracks will reappear, and every repair weakens the integrity of the cell a bit more, until it reaches a knock- down point and the structure is compromised. The cell needs to be replaced, otherwise the cell will collapse.

"The Sherman Mine, Temagami, Ontario, is an iron ore pellet operation rated at one million tons per year capacity. Mining is done from three open pits in two bands of Keewatin iron-formation intercalated in a 'greenstone belt' thought to be part of the Archean 'Abitibi Belt'. The bands of iron-formation are tabular and steeply dipping, averaging 75 degrees. The principal ore mineral is magnetite.Blast holes, 1214 inches in diameter, are drilled on 28-foot centers, each hole being sampled and assayed for both total iron and magnetic iron. Concentration tests are made in the laboratory to determine the anticipated concentrate grade. Two classes of ore are recognized -'liberating' or 'refractory'. Blending is done on iron con-.tent, degree of ease of liberation (i.e. grain size) and chunkiness. The latter is important, as primary milling is done in autogenous mills. Actual daily mill results are compared with predicted grade from blast holes, exploration diamond drill holes and pit inspection. Hourly mill samples are analyzed by the X-Ray Fluorescent Analyzer, with emphasis on silica grade. In 1969, the pellet grade was improved from 7 .01 per cent silica natural to 5.50 per cent silica natural."

Introduction Salt (sodium chloride) occurs naturally either in the solid state as rock salt or in solution as a component of natural brines. It is the major saline constituent of sea water, which contains about 4 percent salt-roughly 164 million tons, or enough to meet world salt demands for five years, per cubic mile. The great rock salt deposits of the world are generally regarded as having been formed by the evaporation of sea water over long periods of rime in wholly, partially, or periodically cut-off bays of ancient oceans. History and Occurrence of Salt in Canada We can speak today of the vastness of Canada&apos;s salt resources, but it was not always so. Settlement of our Atlantic seaboard and the Sr. Lawrence valley began in earnest in the early 1600&apos;s. The first small commercial salt works in Canada did not come into operation until 1866. Thus, for some two and a half centuries, the inhabitants of this growing country were entirely dependent on foreign sources for every pound of salt they consumed. The record shows that from at !east 1800 onward, the need for a domestic salt industry was clearly recognized by the governments of the day. It was during the Western Ontario oil-boom of 1866 that the initial discovery of rock salt in Canada was made, not far from Goderich, at a depth of 1,000 feet. A salt company was promptly organized, and with their operations there began the gradual and still uncompleted conquest of the Canadian salt market by the Canadian salt industry. Over the next thirty years many holes were drilled into the Salina formation both in Ontario and Michigan, and encountered rock salt. A vast salt-basin was disclosed, approximately outlined, and given the name Ontario-Michigan Salt Basin. The Ontario portion of the basin extends over at least 3,500 square miles, is met with at a depth varying between 800 and 1,600 feet, and has a thickness of 50 to 250 feet. No attempt has ever been made, so far as we know, to calculate the total salt reserves of this basin, but the minimum indicated in the Ontario portion by the figures just cited is just under thirty-five cubic miles. The specific gravity of rock salt is 2.2. From these data, those so inclined may calculate the tonnage.

An extensive Precambrian iron-formation lies about 2,000 ft. beneath post-Precambrian rocks in the Fort a Ia Corne Forest Reserve, south of Choiceland, Saskatchewan. The geology, deduced from limited drill results and from some geophysical observations, indicates that the deposit is a characteristic magnetite iron-formation, not uncommon in the exposed Precambrian of Saskatchewan, but also shows certain interesting features of faulting and pre-Paleozoic weathering which have given rise to a pre-served detrital deposit of hematite. The body is of ore grade and of sizeable proportions. T HIS paper is presented in order to set forth the interesting geological features of a Precambrian iron deposit located beneath the cover rocks of the Great Plains region and to comment upon the methods of discovery and interpretation of the nature of the body. "Since the inception of spherical agglomeration, few investigations to exploit commercially the technique in the metallurgical field have been conducted. Of these, none appear to have been carried sufficiently far to demonstrate commercial feasibility.This paper describes a continuous agglomeration-separation process that can rapidly handle large tonnages of ore material. A small pilot plant de-signed from information obtained with the semi-batch unit described herein is currently in operation.In the absence of a reagent recovery system or cheap reagents, the process is probably not economically attractive for many common ores. However, for iron ores, the fuel content of the agglomerates can be used in a subsequent step such as direct reduction."

"A novel methodology was developed to obtain a 3D porous layer with a high aspect ratio of porosity on a titanium electrode. The porous structure allowed more active material such as hydrous ruthenium oxide to be accommodated during the fabrication of the supercapacitor, resulting in an exceptionally high capacitance per surface area. The electrode demonstrated a remarkably high capacitance of 4,800 mF/cm2. The porous layer was composed of functionalized nanoparticles of TiO2 organized in a perfect 3D hexagonal close-packed array that resulted in a highly porous 3D structure. The layer was used as a template to electrolessly deposit a thin layer of silver prior to the electrodeposition of active material. "Rockburst, which often occurs around underground openings in highly stressed hard rocks, is a sudden and violent unstable rock failure and is associated with energy release. Rockburst is very dangerous to workers and mining equipment, and it has been a major concern for deep underground construction and mining. Before excavation, rocks are loaded under a true-triaxial condition. Upon excavation, the rocks at the excavation boundaries are loaded in the maximum principal stress direction and unloaded in the minimum principal stress direction and this provides a necessary condition for unstable rock failure to occur. Understanding rock behavior under true-triaxial unloading condition is critical for developing measures to control unstable rock failure in underground construction.In this article, an explicit FEM tool is used to simulate rock behavior under true-triaxial unloading condition, with a focus on analyzing stable and unstable failure and the released energy during failure. Firstly, a uniaxial compression test was simulated. The results indicated that the adopted numerical tool was able to simulate stable and unstable failure by varying the Loading System Stiffness (LSS). In this research, Loading System Reaction Intensity (LSRI) was proposed as an indicator to identify stable and unstable failure. Secondly, unstable rock failure under true-triaxial unloading condition was simulated. A rock specimen was loaded in three directions; the lateral pressures (s3 and s2) were kept constant and the vertical stress (s1) was increased to a pre-defined stress. The specimen was suddenly unloaded in the minimum principal stress direction (s3) and loading in the s1 direction was continued until failure occurred. Different LSS values were considered and the results showed that the LSS influenced the failure mode; a soft loading system resulted in more violent failure and released more energy than that in a stiff loading system. The influence of specimen height to width ratio on rock failure was also investigated. It was found that failure in taller specimens was more violent than that in shorter specimens. Insights gained from the simulation are useful for better understanding of the influencing factors on the released kinetic energy during unstable rock failure and to find means to control rockburst damage in engineering practice."

THE problem of compensation for labour is probably the oldest and most complicated one in history. The wage that a man receives is possibly the most concrete thing he gets out of his job and, rightly or wrongly, is generally considered by him to be the most important item in connection with his daily work. How today workers in an equitable way has been the study of industrialists for many years, and a great number of ideas have been tried out in an effort to arrive at a reasonable solution of the question. The idea of establishing a measuring stick for various types of work has intrigued industrial management for a long time and, after considerable study, the principle of Job Evaluation has taken form unti1, at the present time, it is becoming increasingly useful to industry at large. Job evaluation is a plan which is used to determine the relative worth of occupations by means of arbitrary measuring scales. These scales are developed for individual industries and are generally &apos;tailor made&apos; for each particular case. There are as yet no absolute methods of measuring the work done by human beings and, as a result, one has to depend on comparative values to arrive at conclusions. However, job evaluation has provided us with a basis of negotiation for wage rates which is more satisfactory than mere guess work or persona! opinion. It supplies a common ground for discussion which is understandable by all taking part and ensures that thinking with regard to wage setting is carried out along standard lines.

"This article was undertaken to investigate the effect of nickel and zirconium additions on the strength of 354 aluminum cast alloy. The cast alloys were given a solutionizing treatment followed by artificial aging at 190 ºC for 2 hr. High temperature tensile tests were conducted at various temperatures from 25ºC to 300ºC. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the microstructure of the samples. The results revealed that the intermetallics phases of (Al,Si)3(Zr,Ti), Al3CuNi and Al9NiFe are the main feature in the microstructures of alloys with Zr and Ni additions. The results also indicated that the tensile strength of alloy decreases with an increase in temperature. The combined addition of 0.2 wt% Zr and 0.2 wt% Ni leads to a 30% increase in the tensile properties at 300ºC compared to the base alloy.INTRODUCTIONThe task of improving the mechanical properties in an aluminum alloy at high temperatures should include the knowledge of several factors which are related principally to a decrease in the strength of the metal with increasing temperatures. This behavior is linked to the change or deterioration in the principal metallurgical parameters of the specific cast aluminum alloy during its performance at higher temperatures. Most of applications of Al-Si casting alloys are generally used at temperatures of no more than 230°C (Lee & Chen, 2002). This recommendation is made in view of the fact that, for certain applications such as those required by the automotive industry, these alloys must operate over a wide range of temperatures and stress conditions where temperatures are liable to rise even higher than 230ºC (Robson & Pragnell, 2003).Aluminum-silicon-copper-magnesium alloys such as the 354 alloys show a greater response to heat treatment as a result of the presence of both Mg and Cu. These alloy types display excellent strength and hardness VALUES (although at some sacrifice of ductility and corrosion resistance. These alloys are used for a wide range of applications, such as engine cooling fans, crankcases, high speed rotating parts, structural aerospace components, air compressor pistons, fuel pumps, compressor cases, timing gears, rocker arms, machine parts, and so forth (Cáceres, Svensson, & Taylor, 2003; Rurrxia, Rong-de, Yu-hua, Cherrxi, Xiao-feng, Heng-rong, & H. Zhuang-qi, 2004)."

This paper presents a partial compilation of adopted measures of waste rock dump closures at mine sites located in Canada and Alaska, where the climate includes cold winters. The paper also presents the selection process that was followed for some of those mine sites. Mining operations usually generate waste rock that can sometimes result in very large quantities. Additionally, the nature of the ore body and the host rock will often introduce environmental impacts. These impacts need to be managed not only during the operations but also in the long term. Mine closure plans consequently have to address the long term issues that sometimes require perpetual treatment. Closure planning often involves the evaluation of risks associated with environmental and financial liabilities. It needs to consider the science, some common definition of objectives, and there will be a need to manage resources and schedules. Closure planning is essentially an exercise in constrained decision making. A performance and risk based ranking matrix is often developed during this selection process to identify the preferred option(s). The case studies presented in this paper provides a few examples. The level of knowledge on acid rock drainage from waste rock dumps has increased considerably over the past decades. It did not necessarily increase the level of complexity of the adopted closure methods, as the selected closure methods are often kept simple. A common approach consists of stabilising the slopes of the waste rock dumps material by resloping and then covering the waste rock with a growth media to support vegetation. Such covers prevent direct contact of animals with the waste rock material, minimise erosion and reduce infiltration to various degrees. The inclusion of water treatment is obviously dependent on the water quality being released.

"By now, most geologists and engineers in the Canadian mining industry are familiar with National Instrument 43101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101) and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Definition Standards for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves, which are incorporated by reference in NI 43-101. In recent years, significant progress has also been made in establishing standard reporting practices internationally that recognize the globalization of the industry and enable investors to compare projects anywhere in the world and make informed investment decisions. This article is part of a series that will summarize the background and development of international resource and reserve reporting standards by the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), highlight its current activities and provide insight into international mineral reserve and resource reporting issues. CRIRSCO was formerly the Mineral Definitions Working Group of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions (CMMI), an organization representing professional bodies in all of the major mining and mining investment countries. In 2002, CMMI disbanded and CRIRSCO continued as a volunteer committee with limited funding from those professional bodies and increasingly from other sources, such as mining companies and regulatory bodies. CRIRSCO was adopted as a Task Force of the International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM) in 2007. The ICMM is an influential industry body representing all of the major mining companies and many junior companies through its associated members, such as the Minerals Council of Australia, the Chamber of Mines of South Africa and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. CRIRSCO now has funding to pursue its objectives."

THE development of the oil and gas resources of Western Canada is not, as many suppose, a new industry. For more than half a century an intensive search for these valuable products of nature extended from near the western edge of the Precambrian Shield to the Pacific coast, and from the International boundary north to the Arctic circle. The chief centre of interest to the oil prospector has, however, always lain in that region lying east of the first range of the Rocky mountains and confined largely within the boundaries of the Province of Alberta. Although there are many geological problems yet to be worked out in this Province, the oil-well driller has helped in no small way in determining sub-surface conditions and distribution of rock formations. The chief geological conditions as they affect the drilling of wells are generally re-cognized, and for this purpose the Province may be partitioned into three main divisions: first, the disturbed belt or foothills region extending along the eastern edge of the Rocky mountains; second, the Alberta geosyncline, a broad trough lying to the east of and parallel to the disturbed belt and from which the formations rise eastward to level off and form, third, the plains ? ? region, extending over the rest of the Province. A relatively small area in the northeastern part of the Province is underlain with Precambrian rocks and may be excluded from this classification, as it is of no interest to the oil prospector. The foothills, or disturbed belt, has presented the greatest difficulty to drilling, though it has produced the largest yield of oil within the Province to date. Within the foothills belt, the rock formations consist largely of hard shales interspersed with layers of abrasive sandstones, which wear out drilling bits at an alarming rate. The strata, in most flaces, dip steeply and are cut by numerous thrust faults. Although some o the faults have great displacements, their presence may easily be overlooked or the extent of the fault misinterpreted. Many a prospect well has been located on what appeared to be a suitable geological structure only to find, after drilling through a normal succession of rocks for 4,000 feet or more, that the drill had passed through a major fault plane to a younger formation than that in which drilling was started. Only a repetition of formations already drilled could be expected at greater depths.

The Members of your Institute can have a great influence on the direction in which the mineral policies of Canada will evolve, and to assure that optimum benefits from our country's vast mineral resources will accrue to the nation as a whole and to all its citizens. Today, I want to: (1) offer an outlook on the mineral industry for 1973; (2) talk briefly about the role of minerals in the total economy; and (3) outline some of our thinking with respect to a national minerals policy for Canada."
