The selection of the best comminution circuit for the preparation of concentration feed is a compromise based on economics, energy efficiency, labour costs, steel consumption, availability and other factors specific to each case. It is postulated that the selection must be a choice of one of the eight basic comminution circuits which can be divided into two basic groups, (1) autogenous or semi-autogenous primary mills with or without a secondary grinding stage and (2) fine crushing usually in cone crushers followed by a rod mill-ball mill circuit or a single stage ball mill circuit. The accuracy of selection may be improved by pilot plant and laboratory tests which are described in this paper. For (1) above, testing includes media competency tests with standard impact crushing, grindability and abrasion tests followed by pilot plant tests. For (2) above, bench scale crushability, grindability and abrasion testing is available. It is suggested that, through these tests, it should be possible to eliminate all but one in each group of basic comminution circuits. Then engineering and economic studies should lead to the best comminution circuit for the specific requirement.

Comminution within rod mills has been investigated by use of a matrix analysis of breakage processes. A parameter, the number of breakage stages, has been introduced and comminution within all rod mills has been expressed in terms of the number of grinding stages and a function which describes the feed rate, mill diameter, and mill speed. The effect of variation in feed rate, feed sizing analysis and mill speed on the number of breakage stages is discussed, but no general relation is proposed because more study is needed.INTRODUCTIONRod mills are normally used as the first unit of multi-unit systems for the grinding of metalliferous ores and the cost of operating rod mills may be considerable. For both economic and metallurgical reasons, it is therefore necessary that the mills should be operated efficiently and that a knowledge of the mechanism of the size reduction process within rod mills should be as complete as possible. The dissolution of gold in cyanide has been studied, using both chemical and electrochemical techniques. The electro-chemical studies have confirmed that gold may become passive in cyanide solution if its potential becomes more positive than -O· 5 V v. saturated calomel electrode (S.C.E.). The results of the conventional solution rate tests suggest that, although the solution rate is controlled by the rate of diffusion of oxygen at low oxygen and agitation levels, when these are increased the gold may become passive and its solution rate approach a steady value, or even decrease with increasing oxygen level. The passivity of gold has been shown to be of importance in the solution of small spheres of this metal, and in the extraction of gold from a calcined auriferous pyrite concentrate.INTRODUCTIONAlthough it has been appreciated for many years (McLaurin, 1893, 1895) that dissolved oxygen is a necessary adjunct to the solution of gold by the cyanide process, attempts to quantitatively assess its effect have led to conflicting results. For example, Barsky, Swainson, and Hedley (1934) reported that an increase in oxygen concentration improved the solution rate, but Beyers (1936) claimed that such an increase would reduce the rate at which the gold dissolved.By using an electrochemical approach Kudryk and Kellogg (1954) showed that the diffusion rate of either the cyanide or the oxygen was a controlling factor, and that, if the mole ratio of cyanide to oxygen concentration was greater than 10, the solution rate was proportional to oxygen concentration.These results, although they represent some of the most careful work available, were in direct contradiction to the findings of Mills (1951), who found that gold may become passive in cyanide solution, with a resultant decrease in solution rate.

The Thames gold-silver deposits are part of the Hauraki goldfield, situated within the Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The Waitangi vein system is one of the mineralised ore shoots in the Thames district. The Thames gold deposits are characterised by shallow level epithermal vein mineralisation with phyllic to advanced argillic alteration assemblages and abundant sulphide minerals including pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Gold occurs as electrum in association with sulphide minerals. Microprobe analyses.of sphalerite grains from the Waitangi deposit mostly range from 0.8 to 1.5 mole % FeS, although one sample contains 9.5 mole % FeS. Arsenopyrite from Waitangi yields a range from 33.1 to 34.6 atomic As (%). There is no discernible correlation between the FeS content of sphalerite and gold grade in the Waitangi deposit suggesting that gold deposition is probably not controlled by changes in temperature and activity of sulphur aS2 that control the FeS content of sphalerite. The possible causes for gold deposition are thought to be boiling, mixing and changes in pH. Sulphur isotope analyses of mixed sphalerite-galena and sphalerite-galena-ehalcopyrite samples yield a narrow range of d34SCDT values (-1.0 to 0.9 ë;n=5), whereas late spongy pyrite gives unusually light sulphur isotope values (-16.7 to -27.9 ë; n=4). The sulphur isotopic values of base metal sulphides from Waitangi suggest that the sulphur was derived from a magmatic source. However, the source of light sulphur in the late pyrite grains is not known. Preliminary fluid inclusion+studies indicate homogenisation temperatures between 173¦ and 284¦C and salinities of 0.23.0 NaCI equiv. wt % (uncorrected for C02). Vein quartz at Waitangi yields d18OSMOW values from 6.8 to 12.7 ë (n=23). The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of ore fluids is between -2.1 to 3.8 ë at 250¦C and -0.1-5.8 ë at 300¦C. Oxygen isotope analyses have revealed significant variations in d18O values with elevation and gold grades. Zones of gold enrichment coincide with a zone of variable oxygen isotope values at the top of the vein system, where boiling and/or fluid mixing most likely occurred. Oxygen isotope values varying with gold grades within the Waitangi conduits suggest that d18O values may be useful in targeting bonanza grade gold mineralisation in epithermal vein systems.

Whilst the fossil fuel-based power industry moves towards carbon capture and storage (CCS) or so-called 'geosequestration', the minerals industry should adapt to reap the benefits of the new technology. If CCS becomes viable, the door is open to potential key developments in mineral processing. For example, truly continuous steelmaking could at last be realised using natural or manufactured gas combined with generic melt circulation. Iron ore fines would form a thin molten layer moving countercurrent to the gaseous reductant on one side of a melt circulation loop with efficient post-combustion without deleterious effects of slag accumulation on the other. This eliminates oxygen steelmaking because carbon has no access to the circulating molten iron. Steelmaking merely requires addition of the appropriate low level of carbon and in-line impurities removal to meet product specification. Concerning non-ferrous smelting, nothing short of virtually zero gas emission will be acceptable in the future. For dolomite-hosted Zn/Pb sulfide ores, typified by those in the Carpentaria region of Northern Australia, the way forward proposed is sulfur fixation at the mine site employing the highly exothermic reaction of SO2 with dolomite, followed by encapsulation of sulfated dolomite in fused ore slag. This releases enough energy for direct ore smelting to individual metal products. However, without CCS the strategy would be unacceptable because of greenhouse gas emissions. The scheme is advocated for direct ore smelting at McArthur River. As a result, the environmental problems of disposal of flotation tailings are avoided. Also, highly energy intensive ultra-fine grinding is eliminated, as indeed froth flotation itself, with overall very significant energy savings and exceptionally high increases in metals recovery. Zinc and lead recoveries approaching 99 per cent are predicted to be entirely feasible.

THE flotation plant at Mount Lyell was erected, primarily, for the treatment of ore from the Lyell Comstock mine. These workings are situated over a mile in a direct line north of the North Mount Lyell mine, and are connected with the Reduction Work at Queenstown by a 2-ft. gauge steel tramway via the Queen River valley a distance of 7 miles. The property was purchased from the Mount Lyell Comstock Copper Co. After the disastrous fire in the North Mount Lyell mine in October, 1912, steps were immediately taken to make Lyell Comstock ore available for treatment, in order to relieve distress caused by any prolonged stoppage of work, and subsequently 13,032 tons of ore, averaging 3.38 %copper, 0.28 oz. silver, and 0.034 oz. gold; were smelted. When operations were resumed at the North Mount Lyell mine, it was evident that there was no economic advantage in smelting Lyell Comstock ore as compared with the higher value North Mount Lyell ore, which was also a better flux for the Mount Lyell pyrites, and that the future of the Lyell Comstock ore depended upon cheap mining and successful concentration of the ore. Therefore, extensive trenching and diamond-drilling was carried out, and a sufficiently large quantity of ore proved available for cheap extraction by open-cut methods. At the same time bulk tests by flotation were carried out at the Minerals Separation testing plant in Melbourne on different classes of ore from the Mount Lyell Comstock mine proper, followed by laboratory tests at Queenstown on all classes of ore available. All these tests demonstrated that the ore was amenable to the process, provided that it was ground finely enough. Two types of low-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation may be recognised in volcanic terranes. Chalcedonic Silica- Adularia-Illite type mineralisation is most common in rhyolitic terranes, whereas Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia- Kaolinite) type mineralisation is more typically formed in andesitic terranes. A third type of epithermal mineralisation, the high sulphidation or Vuggy Silica-Alunite- Kaolinite-Illite type, is also common in andesitic terranes. Episodic violent boiling, accompanying hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions, characteristic of geothermal systems in rhyolitic terranes, is stressed for the formation of Chalcedonic Silica mineralisation. Such boiling of deeply circulating meteoric groundwater, with some magmatic fluid contribution, provides chalcedonic veining, episodic banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S from the fluid to cause major gold deposition. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably caused by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwater with ascending deep geothermal fluids beneath andesitic strato- volcanoes. The cooling effect, oxidation, and increased acidity, overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of metals. Extensive formation of base-metal sulphides further enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling is restricted to local structural dilation sites, potentially producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

The primary objective of mining companies is to function as a profitable business by delivering products that fit customer requirements in a safe and sustainable manner. Optimum resource utilisation is a critical focus area to achieve this objective, and the long-term sustainable business performance of a mining company is determined by the extent to which this is achieved. Technology improvements and/or new technology development could improve resource utilisation. However, adding new projects to a Brownfield operation carries risk. Overall project schedules, tie-in schedules and safety risks normally receive adequate attention, but the introduction and integration of new technology to a Brownfield site also carries the significant risk of failure to achieve design performance (quality or throughput). This risk must be addressed via rigorous design phase risk assessments and piloting. Post commissioning, the effective metallurgical integration of any new technology/circuit/process plant into an existing process plant calls for critical assessment, through circuit performance testing, and optimisation to ensure alignment with design criteria. In addition, this approach provides clear focus areas for further optimisation of the new plant and additional opportunity for overall plant optimisation. Roy Hill recently navigated this process successfully, and this paper provides feedback on the journey that led to improved resource utilisation.

Geological modelling has historically been done using sectional interpretation of paper sections or on a computer screen. Boundaries of geological units or grade shells are interpreted by a geologist section by section and the shapes are drawn onto paper to be digitised later or they are directly digitised into a computer. This approach is referred to as explicit modelling. Such methods are time consuming if there are many section lines or boundaries to be interpreted. The number of metres drilled and resource models made is increasing each year and it will be difficult to keep up using explicit modelling methods. Alternatively, it is possible to use information carried in the drill holes, known geological relationships and point estimation methods in two or three dimensions, to create similar geology boundaries, while eliminating or at least greatly reducing the need to manually interpret and digitise detailed sectional interpretations. Such methods are referred to as implicit modelling and are available in a number of software packages. Implicit modelling approaches have been used in iron ore and found to significantly reduce the time needed for modelling while producing results that are comparable or better than standard explicit modelling approaches. A number of case studies have been undertaken of implicit modelling in iron ore deposits. Stratigraphic surfaces of bedded, folded and faulted iron ore deposits have been modelled in various deposits by Leapfrog Geo, GOCAD (with SKUA) and Vulcan Integrated Stratigraphic Modelling. Leapfrog Mining was used to model iron grade shells at particular cut-off grades. The modelled surfaces are of a high standard equivalent to those that could be produced by traditional explicit modelling but the time required by the implicit methods is far less. This paper presents an application of the newly developed risk-cost-benefit (RCB) framework to support risk management decisions for the selection of wall monitoring technologies at an open cut mine site. The RCB framework quantitatively assessed the risk of unstable slope-induced wall failure and its impact on both loss of life and coal recovery. The RCB framework was utilised in the selection of an optimum group of risk-controls to effectively manage the risk of wall failure to ensure safety and optimal production occurred. The RCB framework incorporates mathematical modules that integrated RCB calculations and risk-control effectiveness assessments to determine the risk reduction and financial impact of the examined safety initiatives.This paper provides an overview of the five-staged RCB framework, incorporating the RCB decision support tools, RCBGEN (Risk-Cost-Benefit Generator) and RCEMETHOD (Risk-Control Effectiveness Method), and demonstrates its application to slope stability risk management at the case study site. The RCB charts are designed to display a balance between risk, cost and benefit for easy interpretation by decision makers to support the objective selection of an optimum suite of risk-controls. The RCB analysis revealed that a combination of ævisual inspections, automatic extensometers and radarÆ for fast- and slow-wall failures with structure were sufficient to reduce the probability of loss of life (PLoL) to the æModerateÆ zone as defined by the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS, 2007) for the case study site. The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recent studies have emphasised the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are believed to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteristic d180 values. These values also give information regarding temperatures and the degree of equilibrium. Preliminary oxygen data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia are evaluated in the context of styles of mineralisation.

The Runruno Gold Project is located on the island of Luzon, approximately 200 miles north of Manilla in the Philippines. The mine is an open cut operation and uses the proven BIOX® and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes to recover gold, and the ASTER™ process for detoxification of the CIL residue prior to discharge to the Residue Storage Impoundment (RSI). Work to date has defined a mineral resource of 1.39 million ounces (Moz) of gold, and the operation will produce 96 700 oz of gold per annum over a mine life of 10.4 years. The BIOX circuit is designed to treat 140 000 t/y of concentrate with a design capacity of 404 t/d of concentrate at a design sulfide sulfur grade of 17% S2-.The Runruno BIOX Plant is the first application of the Outotec BIOX Generation III design principles, focussing on ease of operation and maintainability. During development and implementation, the project team focussed on identifying opportunities to optimise the capital efficiency while not compromising on the operability or overall efficiency of the process or the equipment. The BIOX plant also incorporates the latest developments in the design of the BIOX agitators for more efficient mixing and gas dispersion. This paper will discuss some of the critical aspects and decisions taken during the development and implementation of the BIOX Process at the Runruno Gold Project. The paper will highlight some of the factors affecting the commissioning process as well as the improvements seen through the introduction of the Generation III BIOX design principles. Coking coals are very much in demand on a world wide basis, particularly the higher rank coking coals, which form an important part of many coking blends and which represent the smallest portion of the world'scoking coal reserves. Conventional coke oven plants, using these coals, will predominate at least until the next century.Blending schemes for conventional coking require definition of the basic properties of coals so that the factors influencing the carbonization behaviour may be assessed. Several concepts, which are relatively simple, ate available to help promote a better understanding of the bask factors controlling -coke strength and are also useful in suggesting possible lines to follow in the blending of coals for coking.The interpretation of carbonization behaviour and coke structure in terms of petrographically defined coal rank and type provide a basis for planning and exploitation of coal Teserves. The optimum parameters for coking are suggested as follows.1. Type- Vitrinite content (% m.m.f. by volume) 55 ± 5%2. Rank- Mean maximum reflectance of vitrinite 1.30 ± O.10% Carbon content of vitrinite (% d.m.m.f.) 87·5 ± 1·0%The value of a coal should be assessed in relation to all its possible uses in blends. Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. Gas sensing systems are becoming more important in many industries such as oil, gas and mining operations. Particularly in underground coalmines, accurate and reliable monitoring of toxic and combustible gases such as methane, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide is essential. Available conventional electrochemical sensors for gas measurements in underground coalmines suffer from shortcomings such as cross-sensitivity response, limited lifetime, high calibration cost, maintenance cost and safety. Recent studies have found that fibre optic-based gas sensors have potential to eliminate these issues. These sensors can also be used for long distance and distributed sensing of various gases, both of which are important for underground gas monitoring. The kinetics of reduction of copper (cuprous) sulphide with CO-CO2-He gas mixtures, using an excess of CaO(s) as a sulphur-scavenging substance were investigated in the temperature range 855° - 950°C by a thermogravimetric method. Several gas compositions were employed at each temperature. Potential carbon deposition was overcome by preheating the reducing gas mixture. The phase-composition and the morphology of partially reactedsamples were analysed by a SEMlEDAX unit. The reduction rates showed strong dependence on the bulk gas compositions (CO, CO2) and, in most cases, the rate declined with rising temperature. The rate-controlling step appears to be the diffusion of CO2 gaseous species through the micropores of the CaS(s) - product layer which builds up around the CaOcore.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.Due to several major stope overbreak events at Toguraci, the mining method and sequence was reviewed. The method was changed from a bottom up Avoca stoping approach using waste rock as fill material and leaving sill pillars, to a top down open stope method using paste fill without sill pillars.The revised mine plan originally had stoping progressing from the current level to the base of reserves followed by extraction of the sill pillars in the upper levels at the end of mine life. Geotechnical modelling was conducted on the revised mine plan and it was recommended that the sill pillars be taken early due to the risk of them overstressing and being difficult to recover if left until the end of mine life. The backfill material above the sill pillars is unconsolidated run-of-mine development waste rock or unconsolidated rock fill (URF).Due to earlier attempts to extract sill pillars under URF not being successful in the upper areas of the mine, it was stipulated that the URF above the five remaining pillars must be consolidated prior to stoping. Cost benefit analysis showed this to be justifiable due to the high-grade nature of the ore locked up in the pillars.Grout was initially planned to be injected in one pass through self-drilling anchors (SDA) in a 2.5 m pattern. Initial attempts to do this failed due to the SDA aperture and grout consistency. A modified method was employed using poly pipe installed into open holes that were drilled through the sill pillar and into the URF from below. Repeated application at each location ensured full grout consolidation. Drill holes were used to confirm grout thickness as well as add more grout. Design thickness was based on stress analysis.Despite different URF types being present due to varying quantities of fines, the process was similar for each area. The presence of paste in the URF of one target affected the quantity of grout it received.With a design thickness of 4–5 m of consolidation in the URF, depending on stope width and dip, each consolidated pillar (to date) maintained integrity during the stope operation. The Otago Schist is being subdivided on a regional scale into structurally, metamorphically and lithologically distinct blocks. Differences between blocks are subtle, and difficult to map in the field. Boundaries are late-metamorphic or immediately post-metamorphic in origin, and are different from later brittle faults which disrupt the schist. Mapping of late-post-metamorphic structural discontinuities has direct application for basic grassroots exploration in the Otago Schist. The mineralised (and currently mined) Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone forms a regional scale boundary between a block dominated by politic schist and a block with massive psammitic schist, pelitic schist, and minor greenschist and chert. The HMSZ forms a metamorphic discontinuity, with garnet and biotite in the underlying schist, and neither index minerals apparent in the overlying schist. The HMSZ is also a structural boundary between domains with differing lineation orientations. The HMSZ can not yet be traced along strike to the northwest to the Rock and Pillar Range, where the only major discontinuities recognised are the Caples-Torlesse boundary and a normal fault separating low grade from high grade schist. Structural and lithological discontinuities in the Dunstan Range break the range up into distinct structural blocks, two of which are separated by the gold-mineralised Rise and Shine Shear Zone.

Gunnedah, in north-western New South Wales (NSW), including the town, the surrounding Liverpool Plains and the Pilliga forests to the west, are currently the subject of intense mining interest for coal and coal seam gas. Achieving positive outcomes for koala conservation on mined landscapes will require a sound grasp of koala ecology; and local knowledge of koala movements, tree choice and associated threats to the continued survival of koalas, particularly roadkill from increased mining infrastructure. This requires a research-oriented approach to testing ideas applicable to the long-term survival of koala populations. Our recent koala research in NSW has shown that, in 2006, Gunnedah had the largest koala population west of the Great Dividing Range, and the only population in NSW that was expanding. That prompted us to instigate a detailed study in 2008 - 2011 to determine, inter alia, whether the koalas were using trees that were planted in the 1990s to cope with rising soil salinity. Our GPS-tracking has shown that regrowth trees as young as ten years old can attract koalas. In 2009, the demise of about a quarter of the local koala population from an intense heatwave gave us a foretaste of how habitat and climate change interrelate at the landscape scale. We are now examining the optimal combinations of tree choice, and patch size and shape, for habitat restoration. This will be relevant to local coal seam gas and coal mine proposals, and ongoing mitigation actions. The Senate enquiry of September 2011 on the koala and demonstrated the intense public interest in the survival of this iconic species. Its subsequent listing for Queensland and NSW under the Commonwealth Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 further raises its profile and obligations for management of koalas and their habitat. It will take considerable effort to manage the Liverpool Plains koala population for the next 50 years in the face of extensive land-use changes from mining, and the attendant threats from road kill, compounded by the new threat of climate change manifesting itself as an increased frequency of heatwaves and more severe droughts. This paper describes the research that underpins these conclusions, identifies some of the research approaches needed, argues for working strategically now, rather than try to patch up matters after the event, and presents a set of guides for environmental plantings. The Wamum and Idzan Creeks Prospect, located 79km W of Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG) was discovered by the exploration arm of Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Pty Ltd (CRAE). The detailed surface exploration and 11 vertical holes drilled by CRAE, combined with the recent work by Highlands Gold Limited, indicate the occurrence of porphyry copper-gold mineral- isation and associated alteration. The prospect occurs within andesitic volcanics of the Middle Miocene Langimar Beds. It is bounded by NE trending faults to the NW and SE. The alteration and mineral- isation is hosted in the andesitic tuffs adjacent to high level quartz diorite and hornblende diorite stocks. A NW trend to alteration and mineralisation is obvious in Wamum and Idzan Creeks. The main alteration type is propylitic with minor zones of potassic alteration. A late sericite-quartz-kaolinite-pyrite alteration overprinted the earlier alteration and mineralisation. Copper and gold mineralisation is related to a quartz-carbonate-chalcopyr-ite-pyrite (¦ bornite) vein stockwork and biotite ¦ K-feldspar alteration. The mineralisation system at Wamum and Idzan creeks is low in total sulphides. It is considered as a high- level fracture-controlled system with limited low grade Cu-Au mineralisation.
