Research cruises by HMNZS 'Tui' (1986) and RV 'Moana Wave' (1987) investigated the geology, geophysics and seafloor mineral resources of Manihiki Plateau in the central Pacific Ocean.Manihiki Plateau is a large (500,000 km2) mid-ocean platform that rises 3000 m above the abyssal plains of surrounding ocean basins (depth -5500 m). Its foundation evolved about 112 Ma ago by massive outpouring of basaltic lavas at a plate triple junction. The plateau is blanketed by a 900 m thick sedimentary section comprising (i) mid-Late Cretaceous volcaniclastic sandstones / siltstones grading upwards to limestones / chalks and (ii) -500 m of Tertiary nanno-foram chalks and oozes. Cores from DSDP 317 drill-site on the Manihiki High Plateau indicate that the volcaniclastic sediments contain native copper and some thin beds rich in organic carbon.

Air leakage through rock fractures in coal mining is a major cause of coal spontaneous combustion. In order to overcome the deficiency of the existing fire control technology and prevent coal spontaneous combustion by isolating coal from oxygen, the article proposes a novel technology of inorganic solidified foam (ISF) with high expansion to fill fractures effectively. ISF consists of fly ash, cement, setting accelerator, redispersible polymer powder, water and aqueous foam. For preparing homogeneous and stable ISF, a preparation system with a pore type foam generator, a mixer device installed with a hollow shaft and helical blades, air compressor, slush pump and monitoring instruments was developed, and the working principles of key devices were elucidated. Based on a series of experiments on the different ratios of each component material and technological parameters of the preparation system, ISF with a foam expansion ratio of 8~10 and dry density of 250–400 kg/m3 was prepared. The relationship between elastic compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and density was summarised. Based on the injection experiment for fracture of loose coal pile with high temperature, the characteristics of sealing air leakage, compressive strength, thermal insulation, flow and cooling of ISF in the fresh state were investigated, indicating that ISF can effectively cut off the air leakage and cover the coal sample to reduce the temperature in the earlier stage, and ISF can remain stable and not crack. The ISF was applied to Luwa coalmine to seal small coal pillar pressure fractures and loose coal fractures in goaf. High-chromium vanadium-titanium magnetite has not been exploited and made full use of on a large scale so far due to the immature utilisation technology and the reality that the utilisation efficiency of valuable metals still urgently needs to be improved. In the present paper, the isothermal reduction kinetics and mechanism of high-chromium vanadium-titanium pellets were studied at 800–1100°C. The mineral composition transformation of pellets before and after reduction was analysed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) to reveal the elemental distributions. The effect of reduction temperature on the volumetric swelling degree and cold crushing strength was also studied. It was found that reduction temperature has a large effect on the reduction rate of pellets, and the increase in reduction rate is more obvious in the range 1000–1100°C than 800–1000°C. The volumetric swelling degree of pellets increased with increasing reduction temperature, while the cold crushing strength decreased. The transformation of mineral species can be expressed as Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe, Fe2O3·3TiO2 ? Fe3O4· (2FeO·TiO2 ) ? 2FeO· TiO2 ? FeO·TiO2, (Fe0.6Cr0.4)2O3 ? FeO· Cr2O3 ? Cr2O3 , and Fe2O3· VO/V2O3 ? VO. The apparent activation energy of the reduction reaction was calculated to be 44.3 kJ/mol, and the reduction rate is controlled by the combined effect of interfacial chemical reaction and gas diffusion through the porous product layer. The rate controlling steps were further studied by calculating the resistance percentages. It is common practice to include microspheres or similar density reducing agents in inherently insensitive water-based commercial explosives to achieve detonative sensitivity in the absence of chemical sensitisation. It has recently become possible to similarly include microspheres in LDAN (low density ammonium nitrate). Further to previous studies and publications to determine the benefits resulting from the use of microsphere enhanced LDAN technology in blasting, additional advantages are described in this document. These include range tests at independent testing facilities (Universal Tech Corporation û USA) which reflect results observed in the field, and support theoretical assumptions made when the products were introduced. Additionally, on-site studies in opencast pits using Heavy-ANFO blends incorporating modified LDAN, show that monetary savings can be realised through significant advantages gained in plant throughput and explosives use.

The title of my address today 'An Environment for Mineral Development' is a play on words, but I wish to use the meaning of the word environment in the broadest possible context to comment on those factors that control mineral development in New Zealand today. Of prime importance, let us consider the current economic environment in which New Zealanders live and work, as individuals and communities, and as a trading nation. It is the expanding growth requirements of the emerging nations and the interactive economic forces of our international trading partners and competitors, that dictates New Zealand's economic environment and thus the priority to develop its natural resources. As an itinerant New Zealander who has kept a watching brief over the economic environment in New Zealand over the last 30 years, I say, without prejudice, that I am concerned to have seen New Zealand's external and internal trading position deteriorate so rapidly in the last decade. I am concerned that a significant proportion of the population has been extremely slow to realize that with the creation of the European Economic Community, in the late 1950s, and following the first OPEC oil crisis in 1973, New Zealand in a corporate sense came close to technical bankruptcy.

A major factor in the economic development of New South Wales has been the ready availability of coal for the major industrial and urban centres of Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong. Historically, the presence of high quality coal near these areas has acted as a catalyst to urban and industrial growth. This easy access to low cost coal resources over the past 200 years has given rise to a commonly held belief that New South Wales contains vast coal resources sufficient to meet any foreseeable demand. However, a recent study undertaken by the Coal Resources Development Committee has found that New South Wales is likely to face a serious shortage of economically mineable coal in the future. Forecasts predict that demand for New South Wales coal will increase by about 40 per cent, and then remain at about that level for at least a further ten years. To meet such demands, the coal industry will require access to economic high quality coal resources.

Decarbonisation of the steel industry has recently attracted a lot of research and technological development. Most of the technological developments are centred around the replacement of blast furnace (BF), which has been the main primary smelting furnace in the ironmaking step of steel production. Replacement of the BF is not an easy task because of BF’s many established capabilities over the years, especially its ability to use low-grade iron feed. In this regard, Metso has developed its own technology, Metso’s Outotec direct reduced iron (DRI) smelting furnace, to tackle this problem. The recently developed six-in line electric furnace for DRI smelting can be used for primary smelting of DRI from blast furnace grade iron ore. Unlike the electric arc furnace (EAF), the DRI smelting furnace can handle larger slag volumes that emanate from the high gangue in BF grade DRI. Therefore, fluxing plays an important role in operating the DRI smelting furnace. This paper presents fluxing options and proposes slag quality and operating windows for the DRI smelting furnace. Also, the effect of slag on refractory durability will be discussed.

TATA Steel’s R&D Division at Jamshedpur has developed a slime beneficiation process to recover iron values from iron ore slime. This process recovers iron ore concentrate containing 2.2 per cent alumina from a feed containing 7–10 per cent alumina. The reject generated from beneficiation of iron ore slime is treated as waste as the iron content in the reject is below 45 per cent. Effective utilisation of this waste is required for making the iron ore slime beneficiation process a zero-waste technology. In this connection several studies were made towards utilisation of slime waste. One of these studies revealed that slime waste can be used as a soil conditioner. Slime waste contains particles of size less than 10 micron and when these particles are mixed with soil in definite proportions, the porosity and the permeability of the mixture goes down. As a result, the water holding capacity (WHC) improves. This concept was evaluated through a series of tests at greenhouse level to optimise the soil to slime ratio. Finally, a pilot scale field trial was carried out over a period of three months using paddy rice as the crop. Three separate plots with compositions of: soil + organic matter comprising Farmyard Manure (FYM), (ii) soil and slime waste (2:1) + organic matter (FYM), and (iii) soil and slime waste (2:1) + organic matter (FYM) + Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (NPK) fertiliser were used for the pilot trial. The results showed a 20 per cent increase in the productivity of paddy rice for plot (ii) as compared to plot (i). This was due to the beneficial effect of slime waste in the soil. The addition of inorganic fertiliser such as NPK in the ratio of (4:2:1) further enhanced the productivity of paddy rice.

Magnetite ore blending has yielded signifi cant performance improvements in OneSteel’s magnetite concentrator. The magnetite concentrator beneficiates magnetite ore from the Iron Magnet Deposit and produces concentrate, which is pelletised, then fed to the OneSteel Whyalla blast furnace. Concentrator feed variability severely detracts from the concentrator’s performance, affecting both concentrate yield and grade, which impacts on all downstream processing costs.A coordinated approach has integrated mine planning, geological modelling and grade control, to minimise concentrator feed variability, through effective ore blending throughout the mining and stockpiling process.Mine planning personnel design shots that extend the full width of the orebody and hence across the stratigraphic profi le. Based on geological information contained in block-outs and in consultation with Geology, the Grade Control team allocates material to each primary stockpile, potentially from every stratigraphic domane in the orebody. This ensures primary stockpiles are designed with maximum practical homogeneity and consistency.Using only primary movement, the allocated ore is stockpiled in a layer-cake fashion. The ore is pimple dumped across the width of the stockpile footprint and on completion of a layer, it is dozed flat with an access ramp that allows dumping to commence on the next lift. The primary stockpiles are reclaimed normal to build direction and the magnetite is crushed, all in, to a concentrator feed stockpile.The ore is sampled at the crusher from a falling stream cut. These assay data, are used for benchmarking and control charting the grade and variability of concentrator feed stockpiles. The concentrator feed stockpiles have demonstrated a statistically signifi cant reduction of within pile variation, between pile variation and pile to pile variation, primarily attributable to the development of ore blending. The concentrator has seen sustained, improved performance as a direct result, which translates into lower concentrate cost per tonne and improved yield and quality.

There is an established need for an inflow of foreign capital if New Zealand is to meet projected growth rates. The Government recognises this and encourages capital inflows especially where there are allied economic benefits such as the access to specialised know-how or export markets. The Government has promulgated certain Regulations which are administered by the Reserve Bank. Under the Capital Issues (Overseas) Regulations 1965, consent is required before any company incorporated overseas can commence business in New Zealand or before an overseas person can borrow or raise any money in New Zealand. A New Zealand company is deemed to be an overseas person if more than 25% of the voting power is held by non-residents. In terms of current policy, overseas companies are permitted to borrow in New Zealand only a limited amount of working capital and some longer term capital calculated on the ratio that their New Zealand owned equity capital bears to their overseas owned equity capital. Wholly owned overseas companies are expected to bring all of their Fixed term capital from overseas.

The genesis of giant hematite ore deposits in northwest Australia remains a contentious topic in part because key evidence supporting a unifying genetic model has not been found at all deposits. In particular, several papers have proposed that carbonate replacement of silica layers in banded iron formation (BIF) by basinal brines is a requisite first step toward ore formation. This initial hypogene stage is inferred primarily from the presence of silica-poor, carbonate-rich rocks found below ore and along normal faults at the Mount Tom Price and Giles Mini deposits. However, until recently such rocks have not been identified at the largest martite-microplaty hematite deposit, Mount Whaleback. In this study, samples of the upper Mount McRae Shale are examined for their chemistry, mineralogy and petrography. These samples were collected from several key locations, including within drill core that penetrates an area immediately beneath ore along the Mount Whaleback fault at Mount Whaleback. Compared to unaltered black shale from Wittenoom Gorge in the north and altered black and red shale at Mount Whaleback, reddish-green shale below the Mount Whaleback deposit is significantly enriched in MgO and CaO and depleted in SiO2. Samples of this shale consist predominantly of fine- to medium-grained dolomite and ankerite cut by chlorite and carbonate veins, contrasting with unaltered equivalents that contain mostly stilpnomelane, K-feldspar and relatively minor carbonates. This alteration is distinct from assemblages developed during regional metamorphism, and possibly represents hydrothermal alteration after metamorphism. Although several questions remain unanswered, these results support models that invoke an early hypogene stage during the formation of the martite-microplaty hematite deposits in the Hamersley Province.

"The use of conditional simulation to characterise mine plan uncertainty is increasing for the assessment of risk in mining projects. While the development of grade uncertainty profiles is relatively straightforward and can be validated using standard geostatistical techniques, the addition of geological uncertainty to evaluate total risk remains problematic. Some of the problems associated with geological uncertainty methods include the clustering of data in favourable geologic units, difficulty in training image definition and the inability to address change of support issues for categorical variables. Despite these obstacles, the importance of geological uncertainty as a contributor to total uncertainty has prompted Newmont to explore and evaluate the use of various techniques (and combinations of techniques) on different deposit types.Two orogenic deposits of different geological complexity were selected for the study: Subika, a shear zone-hosted deposit, and Merian, a deposit containing gold mineralisation associated with quartz vein zones and stockwork within which are found higher-grade quartz breccia zones. Newmont trialled various categorical simulation approaches to determine the applicability of these methods for each deposit type and the effect of parameter choice on the width of the uncertainty interval. Some of the techniques that were trialled include multiple point statistics methods, sequential indicator simulation using local probabilities as well as variations of these methodologies.The goals of this study included: gaining an understanding of which techniques may work best in which deposit types gaining an understanding of the intricacies of each method gaining an understanding of the effect that each method has on total uncertainty analysis.This paper presents a comparison of the various techniques and makes recommendations for their use in uncertainty analysis.CITATION:Jewbali, A, Perry, R, Allen, L and Inglis, R, 2014. The metallurgical efficien.cy of the operation has been maintained and attention is now being directed towards the improvement of grades of concentrates and recoveries of metals.INTRODUCTIONIt was on 1st August, 1934, that the first Denver No. 21 flotation cells were operated in the treatment plant of The Zinc Corporation Limited, in a pilot Nant which had been installed to determine the economics of all-flotation as against the then existing gravity and flotation practice.The ore being mined at that time came from the lead lode which consists of a granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, manganhedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, manganocalcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only.A parallel lode, known as the zinc lode, was well developed at that time. The common lead lode gangue minerals-calcite, rhodonite, bustamite-were rare in the underground exposures of the zinc lode. During the past eight years a vigorous drilling campaign resulted in large increases in the reserves of both copper and silver-lead-zinc ores.As a result the Company initiated an increased production programme.Some major capital works have been completed, others are in progress and more are needed to achieve the proposed daily throughput of 14,400 tons. The increased ore potential justified a copper refinery which has been constructed at Townsville. The increased production rate achieved to date, combined with improved techniques and greater mechanization, is assisting the Company to combat the general inflationary trends caused by increased costs for labour and materials.INTRODUCTION"Today we are armed with better weapons in our fight for lowered costs and greater efficiency, but we must not flag in our efforts to improve." Such was the resolution expressed by Mr. K. B. Gross, then General Manager of the Company, in his review lecture delivered to the First Ordinary Meeting of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy at Mount Isa on 18th August, 1952. This present review of the period 1952 to 1960 records our efforts to fulfil this resolution. At the th:ne of Mr. Gross's statement,copper production was commencing in earnest. Although the importance of Mount Isa's copper orebodies was well recognized, the major discoveries which led to Mount Isa's emergence as Australia's premier copper mining and smelting operation were not known. Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention remains a priority focus within high-risk industries sector. A major mining operation sought to strengthen their approach to the management of high-risk activities through an in-depth review of all historical incidents that had serious injury or fatality potential (SIFp) events (sometimes known as hi-potential events). The analysis found that the organisation invested a disproportionate level of resources, time and effort on low consequence incidents with a high proportion of SIFp incidents going under the radar. It was found that 76 per cent of SIFp incidents were rated in moderate or lower risk categories and conversely, almost half of those incidents with a ‘serious risk’ rating had little or no potential for a serious outcome. As a result of this project, the operation engaged in a renewed focus on critical risk management and enhanced its operating cadence in critical risk for the workforce. This included bow tie analysis, an update to critical risk standards and increased workforce engagement in the use of critical control verifications in the field. Data analytics with lead and lag indicators continue to provide senior leadership team and risk owners with an understanding of exposure for SIFp and control effectiveness. The audience will take away learnings from a real-world case study that provides data-driven insights of the human, local and organisational factors contributing to incidents with SIF potential. In addition, participants will understand the steps taken to categorise and analyse this incident data and the initiatives currently being implemented by the organisation as a result.

Much has been published on resuspension of sediments in lakes and estuaries. In general, resuspension has implications on transport and release of contaminants from the sediments. It has been shown that wind-induced waves contribute to erosion of sediments, which are then distributed to various sections of the water body by currents. Empirical equations formulated on the basis of cohesionless sediment behaviour have been applied to the design of a few tailings ponds in different parts of the world, especially in the selection of the necessary depth of water to minimise negative environmental impacts. The paper highlights the shortcomings inherent in these equations using field-measured data from a tailings site in Canada. Laboratory measured tailings properties are used to identify critical shear stresses required to initiate tailings erosion. The influence of cohesion on resuspension of fine-textured tailings is discussed.

Exploration of a coal deposit provides the data on which a range of mine plans can be developed during project feasibility. The stages of exploration use methods and procedures which initially outline the deposit with more detailed data gathering and analysis of the specific site complexities. The in situ coal resource and reserves are calculated. The mine plan is a function of the mining method chosen and can have significant impact on the recoverable reserves. Other factors which can impact on the recovery of the reserves and the ability to maintain planned production levels are those which were either undetected during exploration or were misinterpreted. Exploration programs should be detailed enough to minimise to an acceptable standard the recognised and potential risks. Past programs which explored to achieve a minimum exploration density required to satisfy measured reserve status have generally proven to be inadequate, placing reserves and production at risk.

Improving liquid blending operations in production plants is of paramount importance in many industries like mining, oils, petrochemicals and food. For accurate blending of different types of process streams, like homogeneous, heterogeneous, cold or hot streams, it is essential that the composition can be accurately monitored in real time. Advances in energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technology offers the possibility to apply XRF for online elemental analysis. In this paper we discuss an online EDXRF analyser for accurate blending control in many industries.EDXRF has the advantage that multiple elements can be measured simultaneously over a wide concentration range of wt per cent down to a few mg/kg, for elements between sodium (Na) and americium (Am) in the periodic table. To reach the desired accuracy and precision in an online XRF analyser, it is important to bring a representative and homogeneous sample of the process flow into the optical path of the analyser. The combination of a laminar flow cell design and advanced EDXRF technology leads to low detection limits and high performance. The obtained precision and accuracy allows for much tighter process control. Mount Isa Mines Limited commissioned the Heavy Medium Plant in August 1982. The first processing stage using Mogensen Sizer 2056 dry screens, experienced unresolvable cloth blinding problems in attempting to separate fine, damp Lead/Zinc ore at 1.7 mm. A large proportion of the fines incorrectly reported to oversize and hence to the wet preparation screens. This wet preparation screen overloading produced multiple operating and maintenance problems. The plant configuration precluded retrofitting any alternative proprietary screen. An internal Mount Isa Mines research and development programme was established to design and build a screen to achieve the required per- formance within the site constraints. The resulting ISA SIZER screen has exceeded metallurgical performance expectations. A `clean sheet' approach to the design also permitted elimination of maintenance difficulties experienced with the Mogensen Sizer. Four `production model' ISA SIZERS were installed in February 1988. The ISA SIZER screen, now fully developed is available commercially and will satisfy many screening plant requirements.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The Middle Palaeozoic Gurvansaikhan Belt (Southern Mongolia) of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt is one of Central Asia’s most significant emerging porphyry copper provinces. The belt has become the focus of extensive exploration for porphyry copper-gold deposits over the last decade following the discovery of the giant Oyu Tolgoi porphyry copper-gold deposit. The Gurvansaikhan Belt is known to host porphyry deposits of Late Devonian (~370 Ma) and Early Carboniferous (~320 Ma) age. The characteristics of Early Carboniferous porphyry systems are poorly known compared to their older counterparts, despite their probable abundance and potential economic significance. Exploration within the Kharmagtai porphyry breccia complex has identified multiple cogenetic gold-copper-porphyry centres and late-stage mineralised magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias emplacement within a composite high-K calc-alkaline quartz monzodiorite intrusive complex. Early porphyry alteration and mineralisation at Kharmagtai are zoned around vertically attenuated early- and inter-mineral quartz monzodiorite dykes and stocks and comprises a complex sequence of calc-potassic, potassic and propylitic assemblages. Hematite dusting is a common alteration product that gives intrusions and the host rocks a distinctive pink-orange colour. Several of the systems have bornite-rich cores, where mineralisation is characterised by high gold grades (0.7 to >5 g/t Au) that zone outward to chalcopyrite-rich and then outer pyritic halos. Early stockwork mineralisation is overprinted by magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias. High-grade magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias form part of a major copper-gold mineralised breccia system with significant exploration potential. The Early Carboniferous porphyry copper-gold systems of the Gurvansaikhan Belt represent a substantial exploration challenge in an area of increasing exploration maturity. This paper summarises the characteristics of the Kharmagtai porphyry system that have helped to define the Early Carboniferous porphyry province of the Gurvansaikhan Belt and discusses implications for future exploration.CITATION:Stewart, A L and Baatar, M, 2015.
