A great range of contacting equipment is used in solvent extraction. However, a tower filled with a regular packing offers many advantages in the direct extraction from slurries. A study was made of the flow of a dense slurry through a packed tower in which the continuous phase was kerosene. The grid type packing, which was preferentially wetted by the slurry, had slats inclined at an angle of 30¦, to the horizontal. On the sur- face of the slats there were uniformly spaced longitudinal indentat- ions. These were of a height slightly less than the film thickness and divided the slurry discharging from the bottom of the slats into a number of uniform streams. When slurry entered the tower it was distributed by means of a troughs and weirs type of distributor. Because of the relatively high slurry velocities that occur at the entry region, it was necess- ary to have the distributor and the first two grids above the solvent level. The interface at the bottom of the tower was located at the mid-point of the bottom grid, so that the slurry entered the interface as a continuous film across the full width of the slats. Using the above system, stable flow with low entrainment was achieved at slurry flow rates of 3.4 mis/cm/sec. This would be equivalent to a flow rate of 177 gallons per minute through a tower of cross-section 4 ft 4 in. by 4 ft 10 in., or 1200 tons per day of solids of specific gravity 2.6 when the pulp density was 65 per cent. Previous tests indicated that a total tower height of about 30 ft would be required for a recovery of better than 99 per cent.

The approach to risk management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate delivery of a project. The NZ$1.4 B Waterview Connection project is the largest and most complex project yet undertaken by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and the procurement process for an alliance contract was refined to provide compliance with the International Tunnel Insurance Group (ITIG) Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP). The principle of shared risk within an alliance incentivises a common understanding of project risks prior to finalising the alliance agreement and therefore enables superior risk management through design, construction and beyond. Risk management practices need to be instigated well in advance of commercial phases, so that commercial competition does not lead to a significant elevation of project risk. In particular the practice of gaining commercial advantage by taking on a potentially unmanageable level of risk is one of the outcomes to be avoided by the TCoP.During the procurement phase the NZTA placed high value on design and construction mitigation measures proposed in order to address ground risks, as is appropriate for a major tunnel project. In order to achieve alignment on the level of geotechnical risks an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline Report (AGBR) process was developed.This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. The active history of foreign investment in the mining industry has resulted in Australia emerging as a major world producer of a range of mineral commodities. The current contribution to the national economy represented by mineral production and export revenues would not have occurred without both capital and expertise provided by foreign investors in the past. The initial foreign investment has led to the formation of Australian majority owned and controlled multi-national mining groups such as BHP Limited, CRA Limited and MIM Holdings Limited. These Australian companies, and others, are playing a significant part as foreign investors in the mining industries of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Indonesia. The study examines issues of importance in foreign investment in each of the countries. It concludes that in Indonesia, the nationalisation of the Dutch mining industry in 1957 did much to deter foreign investment. The remarkable degree of policy stability brought about by the Contract of Works system since 1967 has gone a long way to restoring that confidence. The level of investment in the Indonesian mining sector is steadily increasing. Its attraction to Australian investors is a combination of policy stability, favourable fiscal terms, geological prospectivity for a range of commodities and proximity to Asian markets to the north. PNG has a stable policy regime which until recently has been free from political interference at the administrative level. As such, investors were developing confidence in the system and investment was progressively increasing as evidenced by growing exploration expenditures up to 1988. The 1989 Bougainville revolution caused a re-assessment of PNG's investment and country risk. The recent Mt Kare incident has further raised concerns over the government's ability to guarantee internal security. Foreign investors are faced with weighing concerns with the risks of operation in PNG against the undoubted geological prospectivity of the country. The fiscal regimes of Australia, Indonesia and PNG were compared by means of a simulated open pit gold mine in each country. The effect of taxation is examined by reference to the relative change in project internal rates of return (IRR). The comparison of the relative differences between pre-tax and post-tax IRRs provides a measure of the relative attractiveness of each fiscal regime.

Most preventive environmental management practices promote proactive integrated approaches to waste management. For example, life cycle assessment is often used to find the ‘hot spots’ of environmental burdens. This kind of approach is often based on generic data and has rarely been used for tailings. Besides, life cycle assessments are less useful for designing operations or simulating changes in the process and consequent environmental outcomes. It is evident that an integrated approach for tailings research linked to better processing options is needed.The aim of this Nextmine™ project is to develop new tailings management models by streamlining orebody characterisation, process optimisation and rehabilitation. We present an integrated tailings management approach and preliminary results from a case study. Combined grinding and flotation models were developed using geometallurgical data from the orebody, to predict the properties of tailings produced under various processing conditions. The modelling scenarios based on the case study data provide the capacity to predict the composition of tailings and the resulting environmental management implications. For example, the type and content of clay minerals in tailings will affect the geotechnical stability and water recovery. Gekko Systems Pty Ltd engaged in the test work, design, manufacturing and commissioning of the pre-concentration plant at Silver Standard Resources Inc’s Pirquitas mine in the north western Jujuy province of Argentina. Testing of the ore at coarse feeds of between 2 and 12mm returned probable recoveries of up to a total of 95% silver into 50% of the mass fed to the InLine Pressure Jigs (IPJ’s). The plant has been designed and built based on the test results to include a preparation screen to bypass the fines that are naturally higher in grade and repulping of the coarse which is then pumped to three parallel trains of 2-stage IPJ roughing-scavenging. The target 50% yield to concentrate passes over a dewatering screen and the solids are returned back to the mill feed conveyor. The IPJ tails are transferred to a dewatering screen and solid rejects are stockpiled off the end of a transfer conveyor. All dewatered underflow products are processed via hydrocyclones to recover dirty water for use back into the IPJ circuit and return entrained fines to the fines bypass line.With the sulphide orebody being processed, the results from operations to date have shown that plant performance is matching the original laboratory sulphide ore testwork data. The objective of the pre-concentration step is to both reject gangue and achieve grades between 300-400g/t Ag to the float circuit as flotation recoveries are maximised within this range. The plant currently achieves overall upgrades of approximately 150% of feed grade with the IPJ only circuit producing an average 180% increase from calculated feed grade.

The offshore Maui gas/condensate field was discovered by Shell BP and Todd on Services Limited in 1969. Subsequent appraisal drilling and negotiations with the Government led to a development agreement, æThe Maui White Paper' being concluded in 1973. Part of this agreement provided for the Government to take a 50 per cent shareholding in the field. The field is comprised of a double domed anticlinal structure containing two gas reservoirs at depths ranging from 2700 - 3000 m. Water depth is 110 m. The development plan called for two standalone steel platforms to be installed sequentially over a period of some years depending on gas demand. The first platform (MPA) was put in place in 1976 but difficulties were experienced with piling and drilling of the 12 (later increased to 14) wells did not start until 1978. First gas was piped ashore late in 1979.

Grade Engineering® involves the planning, integration and operation of coarse preconcentration techniques to reject uneconomic material as early as possible in the mining value chain to improve the quality of ore delivered to mineral processing activities. These preconcentration techniques include screening for natural and induced deportment of grade to finer size fractions during blasting and coarse breakage, sensor-based measurements of grade and mechanised sorting at particle or bulk scales and coarse gravity separation. Over the last decade, the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE), with the support of its participants, has developed a framework for the holistic evaluation of economic and production impacts attributable to these preconcentration techniques. The framework combines the characterisation of preconcentration responses, geostatistical modelling, process modelling and simulation of downstream and upstream production impacts and the optimisation of strategic mine plans to quantify changes in net present value due to different preconcentration strategies. This framework has been applied to evaluate preconcentration techniques at numerous metalliferous operations and can also be used to quantify changes in the environmental metrics for energy, water and steel consumption and emission, tailings and waste rock production. This paper collates the results of these Grade Engineering® studies to show the range and magnitude of economic and environmental impacts attributable to preconcentration. The studies have shown that rejection of uneconomic material prior to mineral processing activities can have a pronounced improvement in energy, water and comminution steel productivity, emission intensity and the profitability of metalliferous mining.

"The financial valuation of mining assets has a number of fundamental differences to the valuation of many other asset groupings. One such difference is that typically, the greater proportion of both the cost and revenue sides of the cash flow are inherently governed by systemic market forces.As a result, the range of outcomes for the valuation of each mining asset is more unpredictable, with higher levels of risk and uncertainty. In contrast, the management function of many other non-mining businesses or industry groups can control at least a portion of the cash flow by maintaining the margin or controlling the sales price. The management teams of mining businesses and operations typically have limited options, and are thus price-takers for both costs and revenues. As mining is an inherently cyclical industry, large, long-life operations can exist through several price cycles, making valuation both subjective and challenging.The outcomes of both static- and stochastic-based valuations, as well as the internal probabilities of the associated cash flow statements, are significantly impacted when the correlations between the appropriate parameters are quantified, modelled and incorporated into the valuation framework. The appropriate parameters for correlation modelling primarily include those that are governed by systemic market forces. Applying this process results in a different risk profile for the asset by allowing the risks resulting from systemic market movements to be more accurately quantified and then objectively minimised. Recent work on computerised mineral resource databases at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited has concentrated on the development of the GERM, REGCHEM, and MINLIT databases, and their integration in a Geographic Information System using MapInfo software on an IBM-compatible microcomputer local area network. GERM (GEological Resource Map) is a mineral deposit inventory with national coverage and more than 10 300 entries. REGCHEM (REGional Exploration GeoCHEMistry) is a database of stream sediment analyses from open-file mining company reports, containing more than 14 000 sample sites from the Coromandel and west Nelson regions. MINLIT (MINeral LITerature bibliography) is an annotated bibliography of literature on topics relating to the exploration and geology of mineral deposits in New Zealand, and includes more than 5000 entries for published books and papers, and unpublished mining company reports, university theses, and government reports. Master sets of GERM and MINLIT continue to be maintained on a VAX mainframe network but REGCHEM is operated only in the PC environment using the Microsoft ACCESS database management system software.

Dr Wark said: I have not come to Broken Hill to tell you how to conduct flotation operations; indeed, during my short stay here I have already learned much concerning the process, of the many difficulties which have been overcome, and of those still awaiting solution. My purpose tonight is rather different. All who have been concerned with the operation of the flotation process must have wondered, like myself, why the process is possible at all. In particular, why can minerals which are heavier than water be made to l10at to its surface; why do certain minerals float while others do not; and what are the functions of the added chemicals?I have been asked to describe tonight some of the ways which have been adopted in the Melbourne University laboratory in an endeavour to find answers to these. questions. Knowing that you are just as interested in them as we are and, furthermore, appreciating that were it not for the co-operation of the Broken Hill companies our researches would not have been possible, I regard it as a high privilege that I should have been invited to tell you of our work. Before doing so, I would like to tell you the reasons why the work was started and for whom it has been carried out. Soon after the flotation process had been successfully exploited on a commercial scale a number of investigators sought to determine the theoretical basis upon which it rests, and our knowledge of the function of the added chemicals has been considerably broadened by the published accounts of many workers, particularly in recent years of those working in American universities.The Australian metallurgist played, as you know, a part second to none in the early development of the process, and Australia's mining fields had already reaped such rich rewards from it that, late in 1929, it was felt by some of the leaders of the industry that we should take a larger part in the efforts being made to extend the knowledge of the principles upon which the process is based.Accordingly, several companies - the Broken Hill South, the North Broken Hill, The Zinc Corporation, the Electrolytic Zinc and the Mount Lyell Companies - established a laboratory in the chemistry department of the University of Melbourne for the purpose of investigating the principles underlying flotation.Subsequently another British company, the Burma Corporation Ltd, expressed a desire to co-operate.

"AEROPHINE® 3418A Promoter is a well-known and widely used collector and is an industry standard for its excellent selectivity and efficacy in the processing of complex polymetallic sulfide ores, particularly those containing silver. Until now, however, it has not found widespread use in primary nickel flotation.In an effort to increase nickel recovery without compromising selectivity over iron sulfides, Western Areas Forrestania Nickel operation trialled the use of AEROPHINE® 3418A as a secondary collector at low dosage. A series of ON/OFF trials were conducted, with the finding that a very low dose of AEROPHINE® 3418A increased nickel recovery by 0.6 per cent compared to using xanthate alone.This paper provides a brief operational history and overview of the Forrestania operations, a description of the trial and an analysis of the results.Citation:Emery, S, Flynn, M, Tan, K and Munro, C, 2016. The Roy Hill Project is an independent integrated port, rail and mine development in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The bankable feasibility study for the project was completed in January 2011 by Roy Hill Holdings Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd. The Project will deliver 55 Mt/a of premium quality iron ore to a rapidly growing market with a mine life of over 27 years. This study is based on exploiting a 1.2 Bt bedded resource of microplaty haematite-rich Marra Mamba, from which 562 Mt of reserves has been delineated to date. A further 1.1 Bt resource of detritals and low grade bedded is proposed to be mined once the bedded high grade resource is depleted. Roy Hill lump and fi ne ore products will compete strongly with other Pilbara products. As a low cost producer, Roy Hill is on track to capture four per cent of the global seaborne traded iron ore market. The project decision to proceed is targeted for Q2 2011 to enable first ore on ship by Q2 2014.

The development of the Moura Coal Preparation Plant is described, commencing with the first'stage of the plant commissioned in 1963. The subsequent expansion stages are traced through to October, 1973. The plant has undergone frequent stages of expansion and modification and this process is continuing. The development programme for 1974 is described as proposed in late 1973. The characteristics of the Moura and Kianga field coal seams with respect to washability are summarised and some comment is made on the blending of these coals prior to washing, to ensure production of export grade coal within specification.

For some time fine coal (-0.5 mm) flot ation has been considered as a bulk flotation problem. Combinations of hydrocarbon oils and frothers have been used as surface active agents in coal flotation. The selectivity of the flotation process has always been poor in such cases. With the increase in fine coal production due to mining methods and coal handling systems, optimisation of fine coal treatment.has become important. Petrographic and mineralogical composit- ions of coal particles have been reported to influence their flotability. The problem becomes more complex due to surface oxidation of coal and the presence of slime forming clay minerals in the run of mine coal. In this paper, the flotation problem is examined on the basis of various constituents of coal and their associated gangue minerals. The selection of reagents has been suggested on the basis of their surface chemical properties. Factors such as surface modific- ation of coal and gangue materials, flotation kinetics and hydrocarbon oil - coal inter- action have been critically evaluated to improve fine coal flotation recovery.

There are numerous individual gold deposits in the Archaean greenstone belts of Western Australia, but only 26 have productions and/or quoted reserves in excess of 10 tonnes Au. Most gold production has come from mineralization in shear zones, quartz veins or stockworks in volcanic or intrusive host rocks, particularly tholeiitic basalts or dolerites metamorphosed at sub-amphibolite facies (e.g. Kalgoorlie). Significant prod- uction has also come from BIF-hosted deposits (e.g. Hill 50), and large reserves are quoted for mafic hosts at high metamorphic grade (e.g. Big Bell). Most deposits have marked structural control, great depth extension, and are characterized by zoned alteration haloes of pyritization (with Au), K-metasomatism and carbonation. On the regional scale, most larger volcanic- or intrusive-hosted deposits occur in younger (ca 2.8 b.y.) rift-phase green- stones (Norseman-Wiluna Belt). These belts also have a high prospectivity (36 kg Au/km2 of greenstone belt). Younger (ca 3.0 b.y.) and older (ca 3.5 b.y.) platform-phase green stones of the Murchison and Sodthern Cross Provinces and the east Pilbara, respectively, are progressively less prospective (14 kg Au/km2 and 0.8 kg Au/km2, respectively) and also have progressively smaller deposits. The important regional- and local-scale characteristics of most gold deposits can be explained in terms of a metamorphic- replacement model. In this model, metamorphic H2O-CO2 fluids, focussed by faults and shear zones, infiltrated host rocks and deposit gold at 350 + 50¦C and 1-2 kb, largely in response to fluid-wallrock interaction. In many large deposits, gold precipitation was synchronous with sulphidation of Fe-rich host rocks, but the diversity and abundance of smaller deposits reflects the variety of reactions precipitating gold from ubiquitous, auriferous metamorphic fluids. Regional variations in abundance and size of deposits relate to factors such as tectonic setting, alteration styles and possibly source rocks.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralized bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulphides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralization. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphio column and mineralogy of the sediments.

Dust mitigation has long been seen as nothing more than managing a nuisance issue, but the reality is that poor dust management can lead to one or more of the following negative consequences: an increased risk of safety incidents, lost revenue, reduced and possibly even lost licence to operate, regulatory intervention, high staff turnover and/or absenteeism and occupational health and safety (OH&S) issues. Dust mitigation and management is not a black art; rather it is a scientifically driven process that can provide an opportunity to increase profits, increase the companyÆs status as an excellent corporate citizen, enhance staff retention and reduce the safety risk profile of the operation.The way to achieve success in dust mitigation and control is to apply the scientific method to each problem that can arise and plague any operation by using current industry best practice. This method of dust problem-solving can be applied to dust issues arising from specific dust sources and locations. The dust sources can include wind impacting on stockpiles, open areas, tailings storage facilities, moving train and truck loads, vehicular traffic on roads, the operation of shovels, front end loaders, draglines and other equipment, as well as ore movement on conveyors.The solutions will come from a combination of deployment of dust collection equipment, dust and moisture monitoring equipment, the appropriate application of water and chemicals, the introduction and maintenance of appropriate barriers and the use of predictive data from local and public weather stations. The paradigm shift required is to view dust mitigation as one aspect of normal operational practice, not a ænice to haveÆ or æunnecessary expenseÆ as most operators currently view it. This attitude is becoming more important as more and more local communities oppose the development of mines. One of the reasons for this local opposition is the inevitable dusty environment that is usually associated with mining.Dust mitigation is not a significant expense if correctly designed and included into the system, either as part of the original design of the operation or as a brownfield installation after the fact. Indeed, there is always a loss of revenue associated with dustiness resulting from ore movement and avoiding this goes a long way to paying for any associated dust mitigating costs.CITATION:Visser, J, 2013. A recently-developed model is used as a tool to optimise the design of blasts used to create final walls in large open pit mines. The use of this tool has allowed present blasting practice and proposed designs to be evaluated to predict the likely extent of rock damage behind the final wall. The evaluation of the damage is dependent on the predominant local geology. Modelling of damage using the software allows the potential zones of rock damage to be evaluated under the following criteria: I . the extent of new fractures formed in the intact rock mass; and 2. the distance to which dilation and extension of existing discontinuities and pre-existing fractures will likely occur. The computer model has been used to examine present blasting practice and to estimate the damage induced by final and intermediate rows of blastholes. The results of current practices are presented in a visual form that allows simple comparisons to be made for any proposed changes in design. To confirm the predictions of the modelling, physical measurements are being undertaken at selected mines to quantify damage behind blast patterns, and experimental programs are underway to measure near-field vibration, or shock, levels. The computer modelling software is being used to qualify and improve the design of final rock slopes in large surface mining excavations, and to provide site engineers with well-defined design criteria for consistency in design. The model is seen to be just one of many tools which are being used in large open cut mining operations to gain an improved understanding of blasting and blast control.

Carrapateena is a copper-gold deposit hosted in a brecciated granite complex, located 500km North of Adelaide, South Australia. The deposit is being mined using the Sub Level Caving (SLC) Mining method at a rate of 4.25 MTPA. The Carrapateena SLC construction was completed in Q4 2019, with ramp up to a mine production rate of 4.25 MTPA completed within 12 months; ~ 6 months earlier than originally planned (OZ Minerals, 2020b). Traditional SLC designs have had issues with safety interactions on production levels, namely at the perimeter drive, as well as presented challenges for the application of automation due to frequency of activity required to achieve ring turnover rates. Safety in design provides an opportunity to learn from experience at recent modern SLC operations and by considering hazards early in the design process minimise exposure and improve safety, productivity and automation of mining activity. This paper discusses the work carried out during the Carrapateena feasibility study and optimised during project execution; to update the SLC production level mine design, with a layout known as the Carrapateena Crows Foot Level Layout. This paper focuses on: • An introduction to the Carrapateena Operation and mine plan. • An overview and historical challenges of traditional level layout. • An introduction to the Carrapateena Crows Foot level layout, including production level design parameters as well as development metres and productivity comparisons. • Outlines the benefits of the Crows Foot design for safety in design of SLC operations. Provides a roadmap for improved production efficiency, level operational philosophy and the application of automation within the SLC.
