ZINIFEX Century Mine is a zinc, lead and silver concentrate producer. Flotation is the primary method of minerals separation in this circuit. The flotation circuit is quite large with 79 flotation cells. The levels in each of these interconnected cells are controlled at more than 45 level control stations. Due to the multivariable interaction throughout the circuit, good level control was found to be difficult to achieve by just using normal Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control. As a first step in advanced process control, the FloatStar Level Stabiliser, a multivariable controller developed specifically for flotation circuits, has been commissioned at Century mine to solve the level control problems. The first section of this paper therefore discusses and shows the results and improvements obtained by using the FloatStar level stabiliser. The results and benefits of the FloatStar Flow Optimiser are discussed in the second section of this paper.

Reliable evaluation of in situ stress is an important phase in the analysis and design of underground excavations, particularly for evaluating the stability of underground structures to prevent failure or collapse. A technique for the estimation of the full stress tensor based on acoustic emission (the Kaiser effect) is being developed and trialed at the WA School of Mines. The result obtained compare well with the standard over-coring method. The advantages of the technique are that it is relatively cheap, non-time consuming and is applicable to in situ stress measurements at depth in remote regions.

Lump ore is one of the key ferrous materials used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, typically accounting for 5–25 per cent of the blast furnace ferrous burden. Like other ferrous materials, the characteristics of lump ore have an important impact on stable operation and productivity of a blast furnace. As the cold burden lands on the top of the hot burden in the furnace and descends, it is inevitably subjected to thermal shock, which will likely lead to breakdown of the lump particles, or decrepitation and affect the gas permeability inside the blast furnace adversely. An ISO decrepitation test has therefore been developed to assess this behaviour of lump ore. However, the results obtained according to the existing standard decrepitation test method vary considerably between laboratories even for the same lump ore. To improve the test procedure of the existing decrepitation test, this paper first discusses the mechanisms leading to decrepitation and then studies the factors affecting lump ore decrepitation. Understanding the key factors affecting lump ore decrepitation is particularly important to improve the existing test procedure that enables researchers to achieve a higher degree of precision when conducting the decrepitation test.CITATION:Lu, L, Adam, M, Hapugoda, S and Kilburn. Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), located in north-western Queensland, is an underground copper/gold sublevel caving operation currently producing over 6 Mt/a of ore. The mass mining method of sublevel caving (SLC) used at EHM involves systematically blasting a series of uphole rings in parallel ore drives and drawing the broken ore using a top-down approach. Each ore drive contains multiple precharged rings to prevent having to charge in close proximity to the brow of the previously fired ring; however, the current initiation system still involves ‘hooking up’ all detonator lead cords of the first precharged ring. The unstable nature of a rill and working close to a brow presents hazards to personnel completing the hook-up process. There is also a business risk of ore loss when damaged ground support completely prevents access to the next precharged ring. If the hook-up step could be eliminated, the risk to personnel and the business would be significantly reduced.EHM engaged Orica Mining Services in 2016 to trial their WebGenTM 100 – wireless electronic blasting system (WEBSTM) for the first time in an underground mining environment. Having successfully signal-tested the equipment, two test holes were initiated, followed by a single production ring and then multiple production rings. In total, 30 production rings were successfully fired underground at EHM in 2017. To do this, WEBSTM was successfully integrated into EHM’s current charging and firing process, resulting in no business delays or loss to production. None of the 30 rings required hooking up and all were initiated from the surface with no personnel underground. A high level of ownership from all personnel involved ensured the trial was a success, and provided scope for wireless detonators to be used successfully on a large scale – both at EHM and other sublevel caving operations. A fundamental component of grade control at Tarmoola Mine has been the monitoring of assaying through quality assurance programs. The programs have concentrated on issues related to accuracy and precision of leachwell and fire assay techniques, sample preparation and grade variability within a sample. An outcome of monitoring has been identification of shortcomings in the application of assaying techniques to Tarmoola ore types that contain coarse particulate gold. Leachwell has shown satisfactory precision since introduction as the primary assay technique in October 1998 but leachwell accuracy and recovery through comparison with fire assay techniques has identified bias. A bias toward higher fire assays in grades above 2 g/t invoked an investigation into the cause of the discrepancy between leachwell and fire assay. Testwork evaluated Leachwell assay recovery by varying leach time duration, which showed that by increasing the leach time improved recovery significantly. Monitoring of leachwell against fire assay had shown that a leachwell (200 g) with a one hour leach has under-called grade when compared with fire assay by up to 18 per cent, on average, for Tarmoola ore types. Alternatively, optimisation of the leachwell assaying technique using a 200 g pulp and a two hour leach has returned, on average, higher assays than fire assay by up to eight per cent. Testwork on screen fire assays, duplicate assays and fire assay to extinction has demonstrated assay variability associated with coarse, particulate gold. The variability and distribution of gold in Tarmoola ore types has emphasised the importance of high quality sample preparation for leachwell assaying to ensure liberation of gold to leaching solutions. Assay quality assurance protocols are vital to assay data integrity and enable confidence in delineation of ore-waste boundaries and provide early recognition of problematic assaying periods and isolation of grade control practices, which depart from performance standards critical to the operation.

At New Zealand Steel MiningÆs Waikato North Head operation a Bucket Wheel Excavator û shiftable conveyor mining system is used to excavate titanomagnetite bearing sand and clay. The system utilises two Bucket Wheel Excavators and two Beltwagons with a two shiftable bench conveyors and two common trunk conveyors to deliver material to a processing plant. The original system was commissioned in 1984 as a high capacity, low cost method of excavating. In 1996 a second Beltwagon was purchased, increasing the flexibility of the mining system.

Over the last six years Mandalay Resources has increased production rates and improved safety outcomes at its Costerfield mine in Victoria, Australia. This mine is an underground operation utilising narrow mining techniques to extract vertical veins, and produces up to 80 000 equivalent ounces of gold per annum, in both gold and antimony value.The operational challenges of narrow vein mining include controlling overbreak when veins being mined are only 300 mm wide. The mine has developed methods and modified equipment to suit extraction of these veins. Productivity improvements over the period have involved development of a stoping method and equipment to suit 1.8 m wide development drives. Over the last five years and during a skills shortage, recruitment, training and retention of personnel has been key to keeping corporate knowledge and skills to execute a careful efficient mining technique to minimise overbreak.Managing an underground operation close to nearby residents has unique challenges. Historically Victorian residents had family members work as underground miners; however, in the current day with few underground operations in this jurisdiction, community knowledge of mining has decreased. The Costerfield Operations are only 100 m from the nearest residence and the company values community engagement, partnership and investment with local Heathcote organisations.The mine has invested substantially in executive coaching of its leadership team early, which has paid dividends in problem solving potential of that team and ensuring the operation delivers on its promises to all stakeholders. The operation has become safer and employees are now more aware of their individual contribution in producing safe, efficient gold and antimony that benefit the whole operation, community and the region.CITATION:McCarthy, M, 2016. The Onemana prospect is located on the eastern Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Systematic exploration involving surface geological mapping, geophysics, rock and soil geochemistry, reverse-circulation and diamond drilling has identified a number of important features of a fossil hydrothermal system at Onemana. This relatively intact gold mineralised system is hosted within a sequence of rhyolitic volcanics and volcaniclastics, overlain by lake sediments, sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccia. The system lies within a graben/half graben bounded by major NE-trending faults which form the approximate boundaries to hydrothermal alteration. Rock and soil geochemistry indicate a broad zone of anomalous gold, silver, arsenic, mercury and antimony. Overlapping elevated rock and soil gold anomalies indicate strongest mineralisation occurs over two zones of hydrothermal brecciation named 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Geophysical data obtained from Gradient Array Resistivity and Ground Magnetics have been used to produce anomaly maps. The terrain corrected resistivity plot shows a number of well defined linear resistivity anomalies which are believed to represent large silicified and quartz veined bodies at relatively shallow depths. The strongest of these anomalies correspond with 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Reverse-circulation and diamond drilling targeting these resistivity and geochemical anomalies has confirmed wide intervals of quartz veining, silicification and gold mineralisation. Petrologic data based on drill samples indicates the existence of a laterally extensive gold bearing epithermal system. Hydrothermal alteration is thought to have been caused by strongly convecting, two-phase (boiling), near-neutral chloride fluids which persisted at high temperatures (170 - 220¦C) to the paleosurface. A geological model is postulated of a large, complex, hydrothermal system developed in a shallow lake or marginal lake environment created by rifting and graben development within a recently extinct rhyolitic volcanic centre. Geothermal activity alternated between relatively quiescent periods of unrestricted fluid upflow and sinter development interspersed with violent hydrothermal eruptions caused by near surface silica capping and overpressuring above a major fluid conduit centred under 'Breccia Knob'.  Opportunities for precious metal mineralisation are evident from drilling to date. Upflow of near-neutral chloride fluids to shallow depths favours the presence of strongly mineralised stockworks at relatively shallow depths. Periodic hydrothermal eruptions would have caused fracturing and rapid depressurisation of the hydrothermal system, strongly favouring the precipitation of gold from solution both near surface and within feeder-vein systems at depth.

This paper provides a brief overview of the history of the Chaffers Dewatering Project which was successfully commissioned in August 1993. Until the end of 1992 the `Superpit' and the deep mines of the Golden Mile had all been dewatered by a staged pumping system from the 28 level in the Lake View Shaft, which was removed at that time when the Lake View Mine was absorbed into the Superpit. Feasibility analysis had indicated that adaptation of oil industry technology offered the greatest potential for a low cost solution to the problem of dewatering the open pit and deep mines. A KCGM engineer and one of the authors visited the Jackson oilfields to look at the deep well pumping technology in use there in early-1991. In the final analysis a new dewatering station was established in the 23 level crushing station of the Chaffers Shaft using conventional plunger pumps, but the rising main was screwed 178 mm OD (7 inch) casing the suspended from the surface to a depth of 686 metres, and was installed using oilfield personnel and methods. Only the second installation of its kind in Australia, the project achieved the dewatering objective at about half of the capital cost of the more conventional approach and at lower operating costs as well.

The accuracy and precision of rutile analyses are discussed. Comparison is made between the wet chemical and X-ray fluorescence spectrographic methods of. estimating Ti02 in commercial rutile. Various allotropes of 'I'i02 are identified by diffractometry and a comparative analysis of the coloured varieties of rutile is given. For X-ray fiuorescence . analysis, specimen preparation is critical and sample grinding and pressures. for pellet making are discussed in detail.Cellulose bonded and backed pellets are shown to be subject to relaxation with increasing age.INTRODUCTIONTo date much of the analytical work on commercial samples has been done by wet chemical methods.This led to various discrepancies in results, which are of particular importance when certificates must be issued for overseas shipments. The present work reviews the nature of rutile and compares the results of Ti02 estimation by wet chemical methods and those obtained by X-ray fluorescence spectrographic analysis.In the rutile industry the results from different analysts and even those from the same analyst are not always consistent. To the analytical chemist this should not be surprising.Fairbairn (1951) showed the results obtained from 34 different analysts on a specially prepared sample of granitic rock. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of leaching zinc from the tailing (-2 mm) of Angouran flotation plant using sulphuric acid. The tails were first calcined at 800¦C for one hour. The effect of factors such as stirring rate, temperature, initial acid concentration and solid/liquid ratio, on zinc extraction were studied. The results obtained show that at the best conditions, about 91 per cent of zinc were leached using a stirring rate of 800 rpm, a reaction temperature of 50¦C, a 30 minute reaction time, a 100 g/L initial sulphuric acid concentration and solid:liquid ratio 1:6 g/ml. The P85 of the feed material was about 150 ¦m and acid consumption was 600 kg/t.

Following the Coalbrook Colliery disaster in 1960, Salamon and Munro (1967) established the well known empirical coal pillar strength formula in South Africa. This formula has prevented further violent multiple pillar failures. In 1996, a back analysis of the collapsed and uncollapsed cases in Australia led to the development of the Australian empirical coal pillar strength formulae. The original collapsed and uncollapsed coal pillar database of Salamon and Munro (1967) was updated in 2006. This study introduced various strength formulae for different coalfields and seams in South Africa through back analyses of collapsed and uncollapsed cases. Today, the resultant pillar strength formulae from these previous studies and the behaviour of coal pillars are mostly well understood and applied with confidence. However, it was assumed in the previous studies that the behaviour of pillars is not time dependent; therefore, the formulae established do not provide an associated time to failure of coal pillars. This paper attempts to evaluate the so called 'Geometrical Limits' concept to provide the Australian coal mining industry with a tool to assess the long-term behaviour of bord and pillar workings where the pillars are prone to failure due to spalling of ribs. In order to achieve this outcome, the principles of the safety factor concept and the probability of failure calculated using the coal pillar strength formulae have also been evaluated and practical design examples are presented in this paper.

The main tectonic elements in Myanmar are a late Mesozoic and Cenozoic magmatic arc system in the west, repeated in northern Myanmar by more than 300 km of dextral movement on the Sagaing Fault, and the back-arc continental region affected by early and late Mesozoic orogenies, in the east. Historically most lode gold production has been from latest Cretaceous high-grade mesothermal veins and derived placers in the Wuntho and Tagaung-Myitkyina segments of the magmatic arc. Placer deposits in the Ayerwaddy River north of Myitkyina are currently worked by more than 100-bucket dredges. South of Wuntho, the magmatic arc and Pegu Yoma fold belt host epithermal gold with associated As, Sb and Zn in mid-Tertiary marine sediments. MyanmarÆs most productive lode gold deposit, the Kyaukpahto mine, lies within a north-trending district east of the magmatic arc and north of Mandalay. Here mineralisation and associated jasperoidal silica occur in Eocene sandstones and Permian and Triassic carbonates. Possibly this district continues southeastwards, across the Sagaing Fault, as sediment-hosted Sb Au and locally skarn Au mineralisation within a 1100 km long fold-thrust belt. Also present in the back-arc region are sandstone-hosted Au Cu in a Palaeozoic slate belt, and gold and stratabound gold-base metal mineralisation in the medial metamorphic belt. While untested targets remain in the magmatic arc, particularly for high sulphidation Au, the best potential is clearly within the back-arc slate and fold-thrust belts in the western part of the Shan Plateau and in northeastern-most Myanmar.

A survey of selected West Coast Streams was undertaken in Summer 2001, Summer 2002 and Winter 2002 to establish the degree of arsenic (As) contamination in waters and sediments downstream of old coal and gold mine workings on the West Coast. Of the catchments studied, Soldiers/Ford Creek and Rapid Stream showed the most significant elevated As concentrations, predominantly in dissolved form, and evidence of AMD or ARD contamination (high sulfate concentrations and/or acidity). The rate and processes of removal of dissolved arsenic from the water column (attenuation) have been studied in these catchments. The Rapid Stream and Soldiers/Ford Creek catchments are directly affected by adit drainage from the Sullivan and Blackball coal mines respectively. Both catchments have high As concentrations in the sediments, with up to 770 mg/kg in Soldiers Creek and 490 mg/kg in Rapid Stream. Dissolved As concentrations are significantly elevated in the neutral pH waters of Soldiers Creek; typically as high as 100 - 200 ¦g/kg, up to 500 m downstream of the main adit discharge (800 ¦g/kg As). Adit inflows to Rapid Stream were acidic and contained 20 - 30 ¦g/kg dissolved As, with relatively high concentrations of arsenic in the stream water in winter (up to 18 ¦g/kg), but not in summer. Analysis of concentration trends and As:SO4 ratios downstream of these obvious As sources confirmed that dissolved As had been actively removed from the water column, but varied seasonally with greater removal evident in summer. Adsorption of arsenic onto iron oxide in the stream sediments is the most likely mechanism of removal. The Snowy River catchment, on the other hand, has relatively high As concentrations in both the sediments and the water column, but there was little evidence of a distinct AMD or ARD input from the Blackwater gold mining area. Preliminary investigation suggests that dilution rather than attenuation is responsible for decreasing As concentrations downstream.

On the first of July, 2012, the Australian GovernmentÆs Clean Energy Act commenced. From this point, a price of $23/t of CO2-e will apply to facilities that trip the liability threshold. This first part of this paper concentrates on the mechanics of the Clean Energy Future legislation and how it will be applied to the mining and mineral processing industry.The second part of this paper contains analysis of the data presented for typical mine operations. Methodologies for constructing a carbon strategy are also presented. This will entail determining what the objectives of the carbon strategy are, and defining what the strategic priorities for a business should be. An action plan to address the risks identified from the Clean Energy Act is also developed as part of the strategy.Details such as the advantages and disadvantages of opting into the carbon price scheme for liquid fuels are shown. Coastal acid sulfate soils (ASS) are wetland soils and unconsolidated sediments that contain iron sulfides which, when exposed to atmospheric oxygen in the presence of water, form sulfuric acid. ASS form in protected low energy environments such as barrier estuaries and coastal lakes and commonly occur in low lying coastal lands as Holocene marine muds and sands. When disturbed, the iron sulfides in these soils can oxidise and produce large volumes of sulfuric acid (essentially similar chemistry to acid rock drainage with mines) resulting in the subsequent release of toxic levels of iron, aluminium, manganese and possibly heavy metals. This results in detrimental effects on aquatic biota, plants, animals and steel/concrete structures and on human health in the surrounding environment. There are an estimated 2.3 million ha of ASS located along 6500 km of the Queensland coastline. In contrast to many mineral sulfides encountered in the mining industry, the pyrite crystals in ASS can be as small as 2 mm and commonly occur as framboids with extremely large surface area per unit mass, substantially increasing their reactivity if exposed to air (oxidation). Highly reactive iron monosulfides can also occur, particularly in drains and shallow lakes. Many coastal areas, where some 80 per cent of the population of Queensland reside, are coming under pressure for agricultural and urban development. Construction of canal estates, marinas, housing/industrial estates, roads, golf courses, aquaculture ponds, sand/gravel extraction and drainage for sugar cane can disturb ASS and release sulfuric acid, which may then drain into adjacent waterways with heavy rain. As development continues to encroach on coastal lowlands, the identification, quantification and management of ASS must be addressed as part of a commitment to the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD). ASS can be successfully managed by adopting best practices and following guidelines, but government, community and industry must collaborate to raise awareness, avoid æhot spotsÆ and develop more cost-effective solutions. Scientists led the education and public awareness program showing infrastructure and environmental damages arising from ASS in Queensland. Using results from mapping and research, they convinced policy makers, industry and polititians to accept the need for legislation founded on good science. The resulting æState Planning Policy 2/02: Planning and Managing Development Involving Acid Sulfate SoilsÆ identifies the StateÆs interest in acid sulfate soils. The Queensland Government considers that development involving acid sulfate soils in low-lying coastal areas should be planned and managed to avoid potential adverse effects on the natural and built environment (including infrastructure) and human health. SPP 2/02 states where the policy applies and when a development application will trigger the policy. It can also be used to assist local governments in preparing their planning schemes under the æIntegrated Planning Act 1997Æ. The SPP 2/02 comes with a æState Planning Policy 2/02 GuidelineÆ to provide advice and technical information on interpreting and implementing the SPP 2/02. This guideline has legal status in assisting in the interpretation of SPP 2/02. Those seeking more detailed technical information can now also access the æSoil Management GuidelinesÆ and ASS æSampling GuidelineÆ, available from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines website. ThePike River coal field is located between 700 and 1000 m above sea level on the West Coast of the South Island. The area contains a resource of some 60 million tonnes of coal in a single coal seam and is part of the Paparoa mountain range that receives between 6.0 and 6.5 m of rainfall per annum. The area has been isolated and has received no on the coal plateau but has been extensively logged in the lower 3.5 km of Pike Stream. The PRCC development proposal recognises this and calls for an environmentally benign development that includes underground development of this resource. The coalfield abuts and is partly overlain by the Paparoa National Park. The underground development will enable a number of environmental goals to be readily achieved: it will be out of sight of the public,it will not impact the national park,noise will be mostly absent,there will be absolute minimal disturbance to the land surface,coal will be transported from the mine to a dewatering complex on PRCC land in a slurry pipeline thus obviating the need for trucks and noise in Pike Stream valley,all water draining from the mine will be collected, treated if required to consent standards and discharged from a single point,the road into the area will allow for an effective predator control programme to be undertaken enhancing native bird life,an environment suitable for the reintroduction of Whio (Blue Duck) will be created, andthe net effect of the mine development on the environment will be positive.

A number of mineral deposits occur in close proximity to the Pacific plate fronts. Among these deposits are gold-silver and the base metal sulphide deposits of copper, zinc and lead. Gold deposits that commonly occur in these areas are of hydrothermal origin. Of these the epithermal deposits have attracted the attention of the exploration geologists as well as the metallurgists. One vital aspect of the activity of the geologists is the development of models for epithermal gold mineralisation in the Pacific Rim. These models can also be used by metallurgists for predicting gold extraction processes. This paper reviews the mineralogy, fineness and the host minerals of gold and examines the data in the light of gold mineralisation in the southwest Pacific Rim. The gold mineralisation models proposed for the Pacific Rim have been used to predict gold extraction processes suitable for the various mineralisation types. Discussed also are the mineralisation and treatment processes of some selected epithermal gold deposits and gold-rich porphyry copper deposits in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji and New Zealand.

INVESTIGATIONS IN 1936In 1936 the Industrial Pulmonary Disease Committee of the Medical Research Council investigated both clinically and radiologically a group of fifty workers who had been exposed for a number of years to the inhalation of alumina in the reduction factory of the British Aluminium Company. The results are shown in Table 1.They also considered the sickness records of all the workers (Hill, 1936), as compared with those in other parts of the factory (Table 2).
