The PSU/MVS program, one of the computer programs for ventilation network analysis most recently developed at The Pennsylvania State University, was applied to the analysis of modifications to an existing ventilation system for a coal mine located in southern West Virginia. The program is well designed and has diversified capabilities which allow the users to make decisions on the optimum size and number of fans, the location and number of airshafts, and the optimum operational procedures. The mine had 10 working faces, from which the average production rate was about 5900 tons of clean coal per day. Two vane-axial mine fans were used in parallel at a shaft, and both of them operated simultaneously. One additional shaft was in the final construction stage and it would be used in four months to alleviate the load for the existing fans and distribute intake air more evenly. The overall ventilation surveys, including the altimeter pressure survey and the air quantity survey, were carried out in the mine entries, shafts, slopes, and gob areas. Computations were made using the above-mentioned computer program on the present condition and after one additional fan was placed in operation at the new shaft. Also, recommendations were made on the air route and fan blade settings for the most economical and efficient ventilation system. Further studies were carried out to decide the proper period when the third air shaft would be required according to the long-term mining plan. Additional branches were added for the next 4 years of the production plan, and the ventilation conditions were tested at the end of each year. Numerous combinations of blade settings and modifications of air routes were tested. It was recommended that the third air shaft be added at the end of the third year so as not to experience fan stall.

APART from the hypothesis of a .cosmic origin (which failed of acceptance because it was not adequately supported by facts), the only important controversy concerning the origin of petroleum has been, for a long time, between the advocates of inorganic and of organic origin respectively. Each of these theories has had a long history of development, and is still being perfected, under the influence of two causes: (1) the increasingly extensive and thorough study of the oil-fields (of which new examples are periodically discovered and opened); and (2) the progress of synthetic experiments devoted to this question. Moreover, the advance in our physical and chemical knowledge of the properties of this peculiar natural product has necessarily modified all criticism of conflicting views. I. THE HYPOTHESIS OF INORGANIC ORIGIN That the notion of an inorganic origin of petroleum, first set forth by Berthelot in 1866, and afterward ingeniously developed and formulated by Mendelejeff, should thus have proceeded chiefly from chemists, is quite natural; for the question was one of possible chemical processes in the earth's interior, and of imagined chemical reactions to be, verified by experiment. Hypotheses of this kind were suggested by many chemists, of whom two, P. Sabatier and J. H. Senderens, may be specially named by reason of their highly interesting chemical experiments. Among geologists, Mendelejeff's hypothesis was received at first with much interest and favor; for it rested on the assumption of a central terrestrial mass of iron carbide, and the geologists had good reasons for adopting that assumption. Yet comparatively few of them attempted to furnish geological proofs of the hypothesis: the majority either silently believed in it, or for one or another reason rejected it altogether.

2.3-1. Introduction. The subject-"Preliminary Evaluation of Coal, Metallic and Industrial Mineral Deposits for Surface Mining'-seems at first glance to be definitive and not likely to be misinterpreted. Nevertheless, there are widely divergent opinions as to what is meant by "preliminary" and even as to what is meant by "evaluation." Some definition and qualification is necessary in order to provide a readily recognized basis for discussion. Evaluation evokes the idea of organizing extant data and judging its significance especially in the economic sense. It also may evoke the concept of the physical processes of acquiring the data that will characterize the deposit such as the geologic mapping, drilling, etc. Castle (5) considers that evaluation may embrace psychological aspects wherein human traits as, for example, over optimism might cause the evaluator to overlook obvious project weaknesses. In this chapter, evaluation is discussed primarily from the viewpoint of economically appraising a project from data available at a given point in time. The qualifying adjective "preliminary" is not easily defineable. In fact, some kind of evaluation proceeds, if not continuously, intermittently over the full span of exploration and early stages of development of a deposit. Bailly (1) comments: "Sometimes, before starting exploration in new areas or countries for a given commodity, we establish models to define what minimum combinations of re- coverable grade and tonnage are needed to give the minimum acceptable rate of return established by corporate policy. Then, before starting physical exploration in any target area we try and guesstimate optimistically what best 'geometry-grade-tonnage' can be expected. If these are acceptable in light of above minimum combinations, exploration is started as soon as funds are appropriated for the target area.''

The experiments described in this paper were made at the Washoe Reduction Works, Anaconda, Mont., for the purpose of determining the relative speed of elimination of the iron, sulphur and arsenic during the process of bessemerizing copper-mattes. The samples were taken from a horizontal a barrel" converter, 8 ft. in diameter and 12 ft. 6 in. long, having an average charge of 9 tons of matte, and blown with a 16-lb. air-pressure. All samples were taken with the blast on, turning the converter from its normal blowing-position to nearly vertical, so that a conical mold, with a long handle attached to a horizontal rod, could be introduced from a platform above the converter into the mouth of the converter and a sample taken. The difficulties of taking a sample with the blast on are apparent, and the irregularities of' the lines in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 can be readily accounted for by the amount of slag in the samples. On the whole, the plotting of the results gives comparatively uniform lines, considering the conditions. The samples were taken by the regular sampling-force of the works at 10-min. intervals, as shown in Tables I., 11. and III., which also give the chemical analysis of the samples so taken. The test shown in Table I. was made with a new converter; that of Table 11. with a converter that had made three charges and had been cleaned out; that of Table 111. with a converter that had blown one charge to white metal, and had then been " washed " out and used for the test. In plotting these results, it was necessary to take, as a basis, the percentage of copper in the samples. This basis does not exactly represent the true condition, since the volume is constantly decreasing and a certain quantity of copper passes into the slag, but it is as near as can be obtained in practice. By crystallographic and X-ray methods, the existence and isonzorphism of Ti3Rh5 and Hf3Rhs were confirmed. Both phases are of the orthorhombic Ge3Rh5 type; lattice parameters and refined positional parameters are given. The structure is related both to the filled-up NiAs-B8 and Cu-AI types. An analogous phase with zirconium does not exist; the effect of ternary substitutions for titanium ad hafnium suggests a size factor limit to be active. A recent survey of phase diagrams of the T4 metals titanium, zirconium, and hafnium with the T, noble metals rhodium and iridium indicated the existence of the A3B5 phases Ti3Rhs, ZrsRhs, and HfsRhs. Ti3Rhs and Hf3Rh5 were found to be isostructural, based on the line-rich powder patterns which had not been analyzed. Zr3Rh5 was considered to have a substructure of the NbRu type (orthorhombically distorted B2-CsCl type).&apos; Because, in combinations with other transition metals, hafnium and zirconium are generally more likely to form isostructural phases than hafnium and titanium (with the significant exception of the Ti2Ni-"E93" type phases based on T4 metals2), the reversal of this relation for the A3B5 phases was of interest. As shown in the following, the nonexistence of Zr3Rhs has been established, the structures of Ti3Rh5 and Hf3Rh5 have been worked out, and crystal chemical relationships and stability criteria are reported. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS AND RESULTS Alloy Preparation and Phase Diagram Work. Alloys were prepared from high-purity (99.99+ pct) elements by arc-meltin3,4.Heat-treated alloys were annealed in a vacuum of 3 x X torr for 24 hr at 1300DC. Metal-lographic samples were etched electrolytically in concentrated HCl with 5 v ac for 5 min.3 X-ray diffraction powder patterns were taken on a GE XRD-5 dif-fractometer with Cum radiation at low scanning rates (0.2 deg per min for 28). It was confirmed that Ti3Rhs and Hf3Rh5 have similar diffraction patterns, and that an alloy with the composition Zr3Rhs has a different pattern. Six Zr-Fh alloys with 59 to 69 at. pct Rh were therefore prepared and investigated in the as-cast state by X-ray diffraction and metallography. Alloys at 59 and 61 at. pct Rh were found to be a single phase, with the distorted B2-CsC1 type structure typical for the off-stoichio- metric region of the phase (Zr,-,Rh,)Rh. This phase forms a eutectic with ZrRhs at about 66 at. pct Rh: accordingly, alloys between 61 and 69 pct at. pct Rh consisted of two phases. There is no evidence for the existence of Zr3Rh5. Based on the results in Rafs. 1 and 5, on the present work on Zr-Rh, and on several additional alloys investigated, the portions between the AB and AB3 stoi-chiometry for Ti-Rh, Zr-Rh, and Hf-Rh are as follows: Further, several ternary alloys near Ti3Rhs and Hf,Rhs were prepared in which it was attempted to replace titanium and hafnium partly by zirconium, niobium, tantalum, and germanium. The results will be discussed in a later section. Structure Determination of Ti3Rh5. Since Ti3Rh5 and Hf3Rh5 are isostructural, the following discussion will largely deal with the former. Although the powder pattern of TisRhs is complex, as found previously,1 it could be indexed by comparison with other structures of A3Bs stoichiometry. Ti3Rh5 was found to be isostructural with Ge3Rh5, whose orthorhombic structure had been elucidated by Geller.9 As both the sizes and atomic numbers of germanium and titanium are comparable, the unit cell volume and the peak intensities could be expected to be similar; however, significant differences exist in the atomic positions, as will be shown. All lines in the powder patterns of Ti3Rh5 and Hf3Rhj could be indexed with primitive orthorhombic unit cells with the lattice constants: The fractional errors are 10 The low-angle portion of the indexed powder pattern of Ti3Rh with sin2 8 < 0.30 is listed in Table I. The extinction laws Okl only with k = 2n and hOl only with h - 2n are compatible with the space group Pbo2 and the more symmetrical space group Phnm of Ge3Rh5. Finally, the positional parameters of Ti3Rh5 and HfsRhs were refined under the assumption that titanium and hafnium occupy the germanium positions in Ge3Rh5. Integrated intensities were obtained from the diffraction patterns by planimetry. Intensities of overlapping reflections were separated by an iteration process incorporated into the least-squares positional refinement program according to a method described previously. The intensities of Ge3Rh5 were used in the first separation cycle, while the atomic parameters of Ge3Rh5 were used as starting values in the first refinement cycle. Absorption due to specimen

FLANKING the Valley of Mexico on the northeast is a mountain range known as the Sierra de Pachuca. This northwesterly-trending range is about 30 miles long and 5 miles wide, its summit attaining an elevation of more than 10,000 feet above sea level, or 2000 feet above the valley floor. Pachuca, a town of 50,000 inhabitants, lies nestled at the southwest base of the range, 60 miles northeast of Mexico City. Three miles to the east, just over the summit and on the northeasterly slope, is the mountain town of Real del Monte with a population of about 20,000. These are the two principal towns in a 40-sq mile area whose yield has brought the district to its high rank among the world&apos;s silver producers. Total production probably exceeds 1.25 billion ounces of silver and 4.5 million ounces of gold. Exploitation by the Spanish was under way by 1530. As the mines were deepened operations became handicapped by the inadequate method of handling water with horse whims and bull skins. To offset this disadvantage a two-mile drainage tunnel was started in 1749 and completed ten years later. John Taylor of London acquired the mines from the third Count of Regla in 1824 and formed the Compania de Real del Monte y Pachuca. Two years later Cornish pumps were brought from England. A Mexican company purchased the British interest in 1848 and within a few years resumed an old project of driving a second, lower three-mile drainage tunnel, completing it in 1857. After American interests acquired control of the property in 1906 operations expanded to an unprecedented scale, despite periods of political strife, unstable prices, labor problems, and a growing burden of taxation. An idea of the scale of operations may be gained from records of the last two decades prior to 1947, the last year for which production information is at hand, during which time production ranged from 1.4 million to 1.1 million tons per year, and the combined development and exploration, exclusive of diamond drilling, amounted to about 18 miles annually. Pachuca differs from Zacatecas and some other Mexican silver vein districts that flourished and declined in earlier centuries in that a substantial part of its total production was made after 1900. While the district&apos;s accelerated activity in this century was largely due to the successful application of the cyanide process to the treatment of the ores, improved pumping methods, and new mechanical equipment, it was at the same time stimulated by the opening up of important new orebodies as a result of active and extensive exploration of the vein system. Some of these orebodies were found on veins which terminate upward far below the surface, and though these particular veins do not crop out, they show relationship with a type of alteration which may be their surface expression. The district has been studied by many able geologists, and a large store of information has been accumulated, much of which is recorded in published as well as private papers. Wall Rocks Extrusive Rocks: The Sierra de Pachuca is a thick accumulation of Tertiary eruptive rocks consisting mainly of flows, breccias, and tuffs. Numerous recognizable volcanic vents within the range itself manifest that the range was built up by material ejected from these vents. The maximum thickness of the volcanic pile is not known, but from deep exploration and from relationship with Mesozoic sediments to the north and east it is inferred that the average thickness in the main part of the district may be at least 6000 ft. The extrusive rocks comprise four general types, which in ascending order of age are: andesite, rhyolite, dacite, and basalt. The veins are confined largely to the andesite, the dominant rock of the region. Characteristically this rock is augite andesite, but it includes comparatively acidic as well as basic layers, the acidic strata being

The data presented indicate that the critical shear stress and strain-hardening Thedatapresentedrate of a zinc monocrystal depend on the orientation of its slip direction with respect to its external boundaries. The tendency of a crystal to form deformation bands also depends on its shape. THE plastic behavior of pairs of zinc monocrystals in which both members of the respective pairs had the same orientation with respect to the longitudinal axis, but each had different orientations with respect to their rectangular external shapes, were compared in this investigation. The purpose of the investigation was to see what influence the shape or surface of a zinc crystal has on its mechanical properties. In a previous investigation of triangular zinc monocrystals,1 anomalous axial twisting was observed which seemed to be related to the triangular shape of the crystals. Wolff,&apos; in 400°C tensile tests of rectangular rock-salt crystals bounded by cubic cleavage planes, found that, of the four equivalent slip systems, the two with the "shorter" slip directions yielded and produced slip lines at lower stresses than the other two. This observation and the work of Dommerich³ as formulated by Smekal4 as a "new slip condition" for rock-salt: "among two or more slip systems permitted by the shear stress law, with reference to the formation of visible slip lines by large individual glides, that slip system is preferred which has the shortest effective slip direction." More recently, Wu and Smoluchowski5 reported essentially the same effect for ribbon-like (20x2x0.2 mm) aluminum crystals at room temperature. Experimental Chemically pure zinc (99.999 pct Zn), purchased from the New Jersey Zinc Co., was the raw material. Glass envelopes, containing graphite molds and zinc, were evacuated while hot enough to outgas the graphite but not melt the zinc. At a vacuum of about 0.2 micron the envelopes were sealed off and then lowered through a furnace at 1 in. per hr so as to melt and resolidify the zinc and produce mono-crystals. One-half of one of the molds is shown in Fig. la. Each mold consisted of four pieces from a cylindrical graphite rod that was split longitudinally and transversely at its midpoints. Rectangular milled grooves 0.050 in. deep and % in. wide formed the mold cavity when the split halves were assembled with twisted wires. Fig. lb shows the specimen shape obtained when the top and bottom mold-halves were rotated 90" with respect to each other. Good fits prevented leakage and excess zinc was necessary to provide enough liquid head to fill the mold completely. In removing soft crystals from the molds it was impossible to avoid small amounts of bending. However, manipulations were carried out whenever possible with the crystals protected by grooved brass blocks. All specimens were annealed prior to testing. From the top and bottom sections of each crystal, X-ray specimens and tensile specimens 7 to 8 cm long were sawed. The tensile specimens were annealed inside evacuated tubes for 1 hr at 375°C. Next the crystals were cleaned and polished by 2-min dips in a solution of 22 pct chromic acid, 74 pct water, 2.5 pct sulphuric acid, and 1.5 pct glacial acetic acid.&apos; Cleaning was followed by a 10-sec dip in a 10 pct caustic solution, then washed in water and alcohol, and dried. This treatment results in a bright surface covered by an invisible oxide film. The testing grips were a slotted type with set screws and were supported in a V-block during the mounting operations in order to avoid bending the crystals. A schematic diagram of the recording tensile-testing machine is shown in Fig. 2. The machine has been described elsewhere.&apos; The head speed was 0.3 mm per sec for all tests. The crystal orientations were determined by the Greninger X-ray back-reflection method with an estimated accuracy of 1. Description of Crystal Geometry A schematic picture of a rectangular zinc mono-crystal is shown in Fig. 3. ABD designates the front edge of a basal plane (0001) of the crystal, the only active slip plane for zinc at room temperature. Of the three possible (2110) slip directions, the active one is indicated by an arrow. Cartesian coordinates are taken parallel to the specimen edges. This year we are extending our educational experiment of last year to new fields. The subject to be discussed at the educa¬tional meeting Saturday morning has nothing to do with melting or metallurgy, but is electricity and how we should use it in the operation of our furnaces. Your Committee feels that all of us could know more about the fuel we use to make our steel. May I emphasize that this session is separate from the rest of the program; there is no registration fee; and I want to urge all of you, especially those in this vicinity, to bring your assistants to this meeting. It will be well worth your while.

SINCE the delivery of our paper on Some Comparative Properties of Tough-pitch and Phosphorized Copper,1 a new brand known as "oxygen-free high-conductivity copper" (brand OFHC) has become available to consumers. It was thought desirable to make a comparison between the properties of this material and those of the materials covered by our original paper and its discussion. A billet of oxygen-free high-conductivity copper was taken from regular production. A chemical analysis of the particular billet was not made, but the producer of the material has given as typical the analysis shown in Table 1. The

Alan Stanley (Titanium Dioxide Analysis of Maclntyre Ore by Specific Gravity, P. 971) is currently head of the General Metallurgical Group of the National Lead Co. He has been with National Lead since 1946, after serving with the USAAF as a first lieutenant of engineers during World War II. A native New Yorker, he graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Since joining National Lead he has been a flotation supervisor, in the high tension pilot plant, and done sinter testing. He is an AIME member and presented one other paper before the Institute, Sintering Characteristics of Minus 65 and 20 Mesh Magnetite. Stanley plays the piano in his leisure moments.

Increasing acceptance of perlite products, chiefly in the fields of lightweight structural aggregates and thermal and acoustic insulation, has led to expanding market demands that have encouraged many new producers to enter the field. In some instances, however, the failure of these producers to anticipate the variable response of perlite to conventional processing methods has led to difficulty in establishing an economical flowsheet by which a predictable specification product could be obtained. It is not the writer&apos;s intent to provide a solution to these problems, but rather to summarize their nature. It is to be hoped that members of the industry who have hurdled some of these obstacles will document solutions arising from their experience.

Expansion of Marcona Mining Co.&apos;s operations in Peru several years ago increased the number of laborors and the variety of required jobs at the Company&apos;s facilities. This change made the former wage administration outdated, becoming evident by the increase of inequity grievances which threatened tile Company&apos;s good labor relations. Such a situation led Marcona to design a new wage plan based on a thorough job evaluation of all its laborer positions. The iron ore deposits, 15 miles inland from the ports of San Juan and San Nicolas, Peru, supply ore to steelmakers in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Marcona Mining Co. operates the mines under a long-term lease agreement with Peru.

A most important research and development item on ferroalloys in the calendar year of 1949 was the increase of interest in the recovery of secondary manganese. Owing to the importance of manganese to the nation&apos;s welfare, it is Ferroalloys most necessary that all possible avenues of research and development on the recovery of this vital metal be investigated. The principal objective of this new development is to recover manganese from steel furnace slags. Steel furnace slags contain a total of approximately 772,000 tons of metallic manganese which is compared to the 680,000 tons of metallic manganese as ferromanganese that is estimated to be used by the steel industry, annually, at this time.

Need for a standard of ualuration.—There should be an accepted method for evaluating the different kinds of bituminous coals based on their carbon just as that for iron ores is based on iron. Variation in the classes of coals and their desirability fol the different industrial uses is analagous to the case of iron ores. The iron people have developed a standard. In the past coals have not been intelligently distributed because the public has not been informed as to its uses. Many operators have known nothing about the final disposal of the coal shipped from their mines. Sales agents and retailers have had no means of evaluating coals except to make the price as high as the market will stand. Producers and distributors need to know how much more valuable the coals would be if prepared so as to contain less objectionable material. Mr. Swectser cnlletl on the Goal and Coke Committee of the Institnte to organize a study through producers and users to develop a method scientifically and comnereially sound E. A holbrook said that the information exists but the public is unwilling to investigate. He praised Ashley&apos;s1 nomenclature of the different kind of coal which has been accepted by the Coal Mining Institute of America and recommended to the American Enginecring Standards Commitee. G. S. Rice pointed out the wider variety and distribution of consumption of coal compared to Iron ore. C&apos;. M. Young approved Mr. Sweetser&apos;s remarks and hoped lor a research institution, probably endowed, to study utilization of coal after it comes from the ground. Mr. Sweetser cited incidents to prove his former statements. He said that a reduction of 1 per cent. ash in the coal would cut down the cost of pig iron at a blast furnace 30 c. a ton, that the coal men should tell what the iron men would have to pay to get better coal. H. J. Prryn endorsed the need of blast-furnace operators to know the kind of coal from which their- coke is made and the latler&apos;s ash content, as this affects coke consumption. A. C.
