(communication to the Secretary): When Mr. Stetefeldt quotes me as saying that " silver-assays are uniformly made by scorification," he has evidently not understood that I was referring solely to the practice of silver-lead smelting-works. Everybody knows that silver-mills do not employ the scorification-assay for regular work ; and it is equally certain that in very few, if any, silver-lead smelting-works will the crucible-assay be found in use for determining silver. The second part of the quotation, "as it is adapted to all kinds of ores and gives excellent results unless organic matter is present," although, of course, also intended in a restricted sense, might very well be extended to a general one. Mr. Furman, in his Manual of Practical Assaying,* says, on page 123: "We believe that the Colorado practice is preferable, as most ores will yield higher silver-results by scorification." The fact that the scorification-assay is the accepted one in Colorado is strong presumptive evidence for its accuracy, as exactness would nowhere else be more jealously demanded. Mr. Stetefeldt cites Albert Arents- as a supporter of his preference for the crucible-assay, although I had already done so in favor of scorification. Looking up again the reference, I find that I was justified in quoting him, as, while Mr. Arents advocates the crucibleassay for low-grade gold ores, not on account of the greater accuracy of its results, but because it is quicker and less expensive, he condemns it§ for the assay of silver-ores, and prefers the scorifier for rich goldores, and for coppery ores, and in general for ores containing both silver and gold. The South Texas Mineral Trend is now estimated to contain uranium reserves of 150 million pounds U308 . Within the past year, an estimated 10 million pounds U308 have been added to this gross reserve. It is probable that a similar amount has been identified in previously unknown orebodies that, as yet, have not been delimited or announced. Exploration that was limited in the past to a narrow band containing only the known trend has now expanded into older sediments updip and into younger units towards the coast. Uranium host formations are also now being explored at a considerable depth and distance eastward from known deposits. Only about 30 percent of the potential uranium host rocks in South Texas have been adequately explored. Geology The South Texas uranium deposits are confined mainly to sediments of the Tertiary system. Reserves are divided almost equally between the Whitsett Formation of the Jackson Group, the Catahoula Formation, and the Oakville Formation. A minor amount of the reserves occurs in sands of the Goliad Formation which may be either in the Tertiary or Quaternary Epoch. Figure 1 is a geologic column of the South Texas uranium host formations. These producing formations are marked with a mine symbol but there are also several prospect symbols that denote potentially favorable uranium host formations both younger and older from the producing formations. It is generally accepted by most workers in South Texas that the source for the uranium is the volcanic ash that is abundant within several of the formations. Likewise, the required reductant is considered to be hydrogen sulfide gas, derived from deeper seated hydrocarbon accumulations, that emanate upward along fault zones into favorable host-rock sand units. Within this basic framework of source, host, structure and hydrocarbons is where most of the reserves have been discovered and where most of the current exploration is either concentrating or expanding. Structure in South Texas is predominantly faults. Swarms of faults exist in zones paralleling the coast and running from the Rio Grande to the Sabine River. These faults are usually growth faults with the down-dropped block on the coastward side. Displacement may range from a few feet to a few hundred feet. Dips are near vertical in the younger rocks at the surface but become flatter as the fault cuts older beds in the subsurface. A map of the oil and gas fields in South Texas indicates a correlation between these fault swarms and accumulations of hydrocarbons. It is not coincidental that the known uranium trends closely follow the hydrocarbon accumulations and the faults swarms, all of which supports the theory of uranium concentration by groundwater movement through volcanic ash-rich beds into favorable host rocks impregnated with reducing hydrogen sulfide gases that migrate upward along fault planes from hydrocarbon accumulations. History Newcomers to South Texas are often amazed that active entry is possible in a district that has produced uranium for over 20 years. Understanding the conditions and occurrences of the past would explain why the opportunity still exists for companies not now active in South Texas to become active. Uranium was discovered in the middle 1950's in sandstone units of the Jackson Group at Tordillo Hill in Karnes County. This discovery was followed by a rush involving most of the major uranium exploration companies as well as several of the not-so-major. Those western prospectors who were used to numerous outcrops and neat land subdivisions were further discouraged by the small size and low grade of the deposits. Then after a brief blast, they left South Texas as they found it and returned to the richer diggings of New Mexico and Wyoming. Susquehanna Western was the only one to stay and develop mines in the area. Eventually they discovered enough ore along the Jackson outcrop to warrant constructing a small mill. They managed, with limited budget and diligent effort, to find enough ore to keep the mill going and eventually expanded into exploration in other formations. By the late 1960's, Susquehanna was mining from both the Jackson and Oakville deposits. About this time, the oil companies began to enter the uranium industry and found, that because of sound forward planning, they controlled the uranium on vast tracts of acreage. At this time, which was more than ten years after discovery, there was so little literature on South Texas uranium deposits that the oil companies began following the known trends and off-setting known orebodies. This, and a few kicks on some well gammaray logs, lead to the discovery of new areas in formations that previously had n o uranium discoveries. Still, the following of the trend as it crossed from one formation to another was the main geologic guide. Nowadays, we in South Texas feel that science has entered into the quest to discover new orebodies. The work of Galloway has indicated new pathways to explore. The understanding of multiple stages of oxidation and reduction has created some doubt about areas drilled in the past and abandoned. The expanded use of oil well logs and geochemical prospecting has lured the more progressive exploration companies off the mineral trend and into unexplored areas. Prognostication The fact that uranium exploration in South Texas has been active for only the past ten years is not an indication that South Texas is not a major uranium district. The geology of the South Texas uranium deposits as described here serves only to indicate that similar geology extends in all directions from the known mineral trend as can be seen on Figure 2.

A study has been made of the microstructure and mechanical properties of splat-cooled aluminum-base gold alloys with gold concentration from 0.25 to 5.0 wt pct. These alloys have been quenched from the liquid state by a torsion-catapult technique, which has made it possible to pepare specimens suitable for mechanical property measwements. From the electron micrographs it has been shown that the solid solubility of gold in aluminum can be extended to 2.5 wt pct (0.35 at. pct) by splat-cooling, while the maximum equilibrium solubility is known to be less than 0.3 wt pct (0.04 at. pct). The very fine grain size (several tenths of a micron), the extended solid solubility, and the fine dispersion of a second phase (AuAl2) contribute concurrently to a substantial strengthening effect. In Al-5 wt pct Au splat-cooled specimens of less than 50 thickness, the yield strength is 17 kg per sq mm or 6 times as large as the strength of bulk specimens. For the Al-1.0 to 2.5 wt pct Au solid solution obtained by splat-cooling, the yield strength reaches 7.5 kg per sq mm after an aging treatment (for 10 hr at 200°C), while it is 3.7 kg per sq mm for the corresponding bulk specimens. A great deal of research has been done in recent years on the structure and the properties of metals and alloys rapidly quenched from the liquid state.' The term "splat-cool" has been used with the meaning of a rapid quenching from the liquid state., The splat-cooling techniques have produced large numbers of new structures, which are expressed in terms of metastable phases,3 concentrated solid solutions,4 amorphous phases,5'6 new phases,7 and so forth. Nearly all previous studies have concentrated on the physical properties; i.e., crystallography, structure, electrical resistivity, magnetism, and so forth, of the splat-cooled metals and alloys. The mechanical strength of splat-cooled metals and alloys has hardly been investigated except for some recent work by MOSS' on A1-V alloys. The principle common to all experimental techniques developed to obtain very rapid quenching rates is based on the heat transfer by conduction. Liquid must be in good thermal contact with a substrate of high heat conductivity. Both of the published devices known as the "gun" and the "piston and anvil" techniques suffer from certain shortcomings. For example, the specimen obtained by the gun technique is very small and flaky, and hence inadequate for mechanical properties measurements. On the other hand if the material is forced to yield a continuous speci- men by the piston and anvil technique, it is probable that some plastic deformation occurs during the quench. A novel method for rapid quenching of a liquid metal or alloy, the "torsion-catapult", has been devised by Roberge and Herman9 at the University of Pennsylvania. In the apparatus the melt is thrown out of a curved furnace by a catapult and impinges on a copper substrate. The apparatus has the advantage of producing a continuous foil which is relatively large in size and of a quality suitable for the measurements of mechanical properties. The quenching rate is estimated to be of the order of l05 to l06 ºC per sec, (comparable to rates achieved by the piston and anvil technique). In selecting an alloy to be studied we were made aware of the fact that gold was believed to be "insoluble" in in and consequently age hardening in the A1-Au system appeared to be interesting. Quite recently Heirnendahl13-15 revealed that the solid solubility, as determined by transmission electron microscopy, was 0.3 wt pct Au at 640°C and 0.25 wt pct Au at 600°C, decreasing with decreasing temperature. In an A1-0.2 pct Au alloy after quenching from a solution treating temperature of 600°C the yield stress was 2 kg per sq mm, and it increased up to 6 kg per sq mm after aging for 1 to 10 hr at 200°C. The precipitation occurred in the form of platelike particles mainly on (100) matrix planes. The intermediate phase n', the equilibrium phase n (AuAl2), and lattice relationships between both precipitates and the matrix were also investigated by electron microscopy. The low temperature recrystalliza-tion of very heavily rolled copper produces a fine grained structure with a high degree of preferred orientation. Additional heating to within a few hundred degrees of the melting point may induce an abrupt and pronounced increase in the grain size, with the resulting crystals having new orientations. This behavior at high temperatures is commonly termed "secondary recrystallization." Several investigations have dealt with the phenomenon arid have served to bare many features of the beha~ior.1-4 In general,observations have been made on the sizes and shapes of the grains, and data have been presented showing the existence of an induction period in isothermal experiments. Although it has been well established that the orientation before the change is statistically (100) 10011, the so-called "cubically aligned" texture, there is no such agreement on the orientation after the change. For example, Dahl and Pawlek1 describe it as being equivalent to an approximately 30" rotation about the [l00] axis of the ideal cubic texture which is parallel to the rolling direction, the resulting orientation being near (210)[001]; and Cook and Richards2 find an orientation of approximately (110)[L12]. Since the completion of most of the work to be reported in this paper, Rowles and Boas3 have published their ver] illuminating paper on "secondary recrystallization," in which they present convincing evidence for a third orientation and show that their esperiments give no evidence for either of the other two orientations. The orientation is described as equivalent to an approximately 30° rotation about a [ 111] pole of the ideal cubic orientation. The existence of a variety of reported orientations is not unique for copper, for a similar state of affairs exists for other systems that have been studied— aluminum, nickel, nickel-iron alloys, and others. It seems therefore that the existence of this variety does not necessarily constitute a contradiction, but rather indicates that different experimental conditions yield different results. The fundamental nature of the phenomenon has not been elucidated. However, it has been generally recognized that the large grains could be the end product of growth of a few select grains already existing in the sample in minor amounts—too small to allow detection—or that entirely new ones could be formed by a process of nu-cleation and growth. Existing experimental evidence does not distinguish between these two most apparent possibilities. Nevertheless, the former has been more generally favored largely because our current understanding of the state of an annealed metal has not made it seem reasonable to expect a nucleation event to occur at temperatures above those required for the primary recrystallization. Observations on the Preparation and Heating of Twin-bearing Cubically Aligned Copper The starting material used throughout. the investigation was a bar of OFHC copper, forged and annealed at 950°C. Visual inspection showed the grain size to be around 0.5 mm, and did not disclose any preferred orientation. A chemical analysis showed the following composition: Cu + Ag— 99.99 Pct S — 0.005 pct 0 — <0.005 pct For the preparation of cubically aligned copper, ¾ in. thick slabs were cut from the bar, heavily pickled in concentrated HNO3 and cold rolled to sheets about 0.012 in. thick. The reduction in thickness was approximately 98.5 pct. Standardized annealing techniques were followed. Samples to be heated were lightly dusted with alumina in order to prevent sticking and then sandwiched between 1/16 in. copper plates. The resulting sandwich was heavily wrapped with copper sheet, and then annealed in air. The protection was such that only very thin films of oxide were formed. That the associated light oxidation of the samples had no specific effect on the recrystallization behavior was shown by the similar results that could be obtained on annealing in highly purified and dried hydrogen. Two methods were used in bringing samples to temperature: (1) by placing the package directly in the furnace at temperature and (2) by placing the package in the furnace at room temperature, and then slowly increasing the temperature. The corresponding heating rates are illustrated in Fig 1, and will be referred to as "rapid" and "slow," respectively. Unless specified otherwise, all anneals will be of the former type. Metallographic examination was made on samples prepared by electrolytic polishing and etching as described in the Metals Handhook.* STRUCTURES FOUND BEFORE "SECONDARY RECRYSTALLIZATION" OCCURS Annealing the rolled material for 1 hr at 400°C produced a heavily twinned, cubically aligned structure, the grain size being of the order of 0.03

We are living at a period of the world&apos;s history in which social phenomena are on so vast a scale, are of so profoundly soul-searching a nature, and are occurring in such rapid succession in the great world drama in which we are both actors and spectators, that, in our efforts to obtain a rational point of view in relation to them, our minds may fail to discern the simple in the complex and our understanding is liable to become confused or even overwhelmed. To the social student whose: scientific training has convinced him of the truth of the evolutionary law, Natura non facit salium, it is neither the vast scale of the events, their deeply soul-stirring nature, nor their rapid succession that matters so much, as the discovery of the underlying principle or law in accordance with which the disintegration and reintegration, which are the two aspects of social evolution, or indeed of evolution everywhere, are occurring. He is most deeply concerned in seeking an answer to the question: Have we in the present great and perplexing upheavals in human society, whether regarded in Central Europe, in Russia, in Great Britain, or in America, a really new cause at work, or, have we, though on a very large scale, merely new manifestations of the working out of an old principle? When we think of the appalling struggle in Europe, into which the world&apos;s greatest exemplar of democracy was finally drawn, no one has any hesitation in admitting that the great conflict was fundamentally a life-and-death struggle for self-preservation and self-propagation on the part of autocracy. The variations we meet with in the statement of the cause of the war arise mainly from differing distances of perspective; but in the last analysis all agree that the autocratic system of political gov ernment, which found its very soul and center in Prussian despotism, was consciously arrayed in a final "world-power-or-downf all" struggle against a love of freedom which was steadily widening and deepening throughout the world, and particularly throughout those parts of the world where this love of freedom and justice hasfound expressionin democratic institutions. "Rarely in our technological society does the discovery of a new class of inorganic materials result in such a wide scientific interest and kaleidoscopic development of applications as has happened with the zeolite molecular sieves." That opening sentence in a landmark volume on zeolite molecular sieves by D. W. Breck (1974), is, if anything, an understatement. Zeolites were recognized as a new group of minerals in the 1750s, but it was not until 1930 that the first analysis of the crystal structure of a zeolite mineral was made. In the late 1940s research workers at Union Carbide Corp. began a program of zeolite synthesis and study which has resulted in one of the major research achievements of all time. Naturally, with the vast research and development efforts devoted to the synthetic molecular sieves, Union Carbide became concerned in the mid-1950s about its position should minable deposits of natural analogues be discovered. Zeolite minerals have diverse origins, and even a brief discussion of these is beyond the scope of this paper. The early work on zeolites was confined to igneous rock occurrences (e.g., amygdules and veins) which were formed by "space-filling;" these crystals tend to be euhedral, thereby rendering them appealing to both mineralogists and collectors. During the first year or so of Union Carbide&apos;s exploration (which began in mid-1957) attention was devoted solely to such igneous, occurrences. A landmark paper by Bramlette and Posnjak (1933) heralded the potential significance of the occurrence of zeolite minerals as alteration products of vitric ash and similar materials. In the summer of 1958, full attention was directed by Union Carbide to the search for deposits of this type in the western United States. Since then, such exploration has been continuous by both commercial firms and private parties. The future economic potential for natural zeolite deposits seems to be restricted to those of the "open-and-closed system" types as described by Sheppard (this chapter). Therefore, this and the following discussions will concentrate upon these types; the other types of zeolites in sedimentary rocks (e.g., deep-sea sediments, burial metamorphic, and hydrothermal) will be, for the most part, ignored. Despite the relative cheapness of natural zeolite deposits as compared with the cost of synthetic molecular sieves, there has been minimal development of zeolite mining in the US over the past 25 years or so. Mumpton (this chapter) discusses the present commercial utilization of natural zeolites and their future potential in detail, but perhaps the following will serve as useful background. In the early days of synthetic molecular sieve research and production, the efforts were concentrated largely upon such high-value applications as physical separation of components in a stream (based upon molecular size and geometry) and in catalysis. Due to a number of reasons (some of which are difficult for an outsider to understand), natural zeolite ores (beneficiated or not) have not made substantial inroads upon the use of the higher-priced synthetic molecular sieves for the foregoing applications, but this is not to say that such a condition will exist forever. A method has been developed for determining gases in steel in which the gases are extracted by vacuum fusion and analyzed by mass spectrometry. This method is especially applicable for determining small amounts of oxygen and nitrogen. The lower limit of detection for both oxygen and nitrogen is 0.0001 pct with an average deviation of about 0.0001 pct for oxygen and 0.00008 pct for nitrogen. Hydrogen analyses by this method are in good agreement with analyses by vacuum tin-fusion. A complete analysis of all gases extracted from a steel sample can be accomplished in 40 min. It has long been known that certain of the gaseous elements exert particular effects on the physical and mechanical properties of steel. With the recent advent of new experimental steelmaking practices it is now possible to obtain steels with extremely low contents of such elements as oxygen and nitrogen. Present methods for determining these two gases are of insufficient sensitivity as applied to steels made by these newer practices, and therefore a new technique was considered necessary. A review of the literature showed that the conventional vacuum-fusion method1 was the procedure most suitable for modification to obtain a sensitive method for determining the gaseous elements present in steel simultaneously. However, for trace amounts of gases it is impractical to increase the sample size because of the physical limitations of the apparatus and the increased degassing time which would be necessary. Also, when only one of the desired gases is present in trace amounts, quantitative separation by conventional vacuum fusion is almost impossible. Since small analytical mass spectrometers are now commercially available, it was decided to use this instrument in conjunction with conventional vacuum fusion for both qualitative examination and quantitative determinations of the gaseous elements in steel. This technique has already been used with success for the analysis of copper and lanthanum.2"4 APPARATUS A vacuum-fusion unit was first designed and built, Fig. 1. This unit was designed especially for the determination of small amounts of nitrogen and/or oxygen in steel since an acceptable method (vacuum tin-fusion)5 was already in use for the determination of hydrogen in steel. The vacuum system was con- structed of Pyrex glass throughout. Mercury check valves were used in place of stopcocks in the high-vacuum section of the system. Ferromagnetic samples are normally introduced into the vacuum system through a mercury lift. In case of a break in the lift, the mercury is prevented from entering the furnace by a self-locking, mercury safety check valve, Fig. 2. This check valve, developed at our laboratory, is a modified T/S ball-and-socket joint placed in the sample inlet system between the mercury and the furnace. A sudden entry of mercury or air pushes this valve into the closed position, completely blocking the top of the mercury lift. The check valve is held in the closed position by the vacuum of the apparatus. A separate entrance tube also was placed in the system, so that samples which would amalgamate with mercury, or which are nonmagnetic, could be introduced into the furnace. A slightly modified Guldner-Beach furnace is used in this system.8 The optical flat was connected to the system by a ground-glass joint to facilitate cleaning, a quartz delivery tube was substituted for Pyrex, and the crucible was used uncovered. Fusion takes place in a high-purity graphite crucible insulated by — 200-mesh high-purity graphite powder. The crucible set (crucible and funnel) is suspended in a quartz crucible. The furnace envelope and the sample inlet system are exhausted by 2 single-stage, mercury-diffusion pumps in series. The first of these is a high-speed pump, which will work only with a very low backing pressure. This pump is used to exhaust the gases from the furnace as rapidly as possible. The second mercury-diffusion pump is used as a backing pump for the first; the capacity of this pump is much lower. However, it will work efficiently against a back pressure of 3 mm of mercury. To assure positive pumping, a modified Naughton and Uhlig condenser7 is used. With the use of proper valving the second pump is also used as a circulation pump in the catalyst system.

Twelve Directors, the Secretary, and ten guests were present. It was unanimously resolved that the sense of this body is that the name of the Institute should be changed to American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Messrs. J. W. Richards and Bradley Stoughton were appointed a committee to formulate the necessary steps for bringing the matter to a vote. The committee in charge of the New York meeting, with Allen Rogers, Chairman, was appointed. The rules of the American Engineering Standards Committee were approved. The Bulletin was presented to the Springfield Arsenal. The sum of $250 was appropriated to the Southern California Section. The By-laws were changed to increase the Secretary&apos;s cash from $500 to $1000. The report of the Treasurer was accepted. Sixty-eight members, thirteen associates, and forty-eight junior associates were elected. Four members were reinstated. The resignations of seven members were accepted. Thirteen members on active duty at the front had their dues remitted. Upon the recommendation of the Finance Committee, it was resolved that the clues of any members who have attained the age of seventy (70) years and have been members for a continuous period of at least thirty (30) years shall be remitted.

TWO hundred enthusiastic engineers and coal, op-erators attended a joint meeting of the A. I. M. E., the National Coal Association, and the American So-ciety of Mechanical Engineers in the auditorium of the Alabama Power Co. building at Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 21. S. W. Farnham, mining engineer of the Goodman Manufacturing Co., Chicago, in his paper on mechanical loading of coal discussed the feasibility of scraper and machine loading. A. R. Anderson of the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co., in a paper on loading coal with conveyors covered their adaptation for long-wall mining and for loading into cars. Discussion of these papers was hampered because the cheap labor costs prevailing in the district have handicapped gen-eral mechanization of the mines. The Bureau of Mines film, "The Story of a Rock-dusted Mine," showing the New Orient mine, West Frankfort, Ill., was also shown at the meeting. F. H. Crockard, president of the Wood-ward Iron Co., represented the A. I. M. E., S. L. Yerkes, vice-president of the Grider Coal Sales Agency, and J. L. Davidson, secretary of the Alabama Mining Institute, represented the National Coal Association, and Paul Wright represented the American Society of Mechan-ical Engineers.

The question of natural-gas supply is receiving careful consideration in many parts of the country, as in the winter months it is quite a problem to have on hand sufficient gas to satisfy the demand. Increasing the output of wells by the application of vacuum has been tried with various results and large companies have attempted to keep up the supply with gas compressors. The possibility of storing natural gas in the sands of exhausted gas pools has been tried in a few instances with satisfactory results. This method may prove of practical value in solving the problem, especially in the case of towns that formerly obtained gas from their immediate vicinity, but now must search for new pools. In all cases, only part of the available supply is utilized during the warns weather, so that many wells are shut-in, yet during the winter months, the supply is not sufficient even with all the wells on the line; in such cases it would be of great value if a large volume of stored gas were on hand, obtained through wells that would have been standing idle during the summer.

The School of Mineral Industries is dedicated to education in mineral conservation and research by which the means may be found to make conservation effective. This includes diligent search for mineral truths and the energetic discovery, complete recovery, and maximum utilization of irreplaceable mineral resources. Standards of living depend upon two factors: human resources-intelligence, imagination, initiative, know-how, work; and natural resources-plants, animals, and minerals, including water, air, soil, heat and light from the sun, and all other such resources that are useful to man. Human relationships have not kept pace with scientific achievement; as a result man, in desperation, wittingly, premeditatively sacrifices freedom for security. Many natural resources, through overproduction, mismanagement, and greed, have definitely moved over into the exhausted or exhaustible category. The United States cannot maintain present standards of living on an agricultural economy alone, and serious harm can ensue if there are marked disproportions in numbers and relationships between city and rural populations. The most materialistic New Yorker must see virtue in bucolic loveliness. The United States is rated wasteful and inconsistent most of the time. It does not make sense to dole out through the keyhole what a wage earner can bring through the open door; to raise wages to lower the cost

An investigation of trends in exploration expenditures for a selected group of mining companies was undertaken for the interval 1968-1971. These trends were compared with financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and the implications of these trends are indicated. The sample consists of 21 mining companies, of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the ex- traction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining, such as oil and gas sales. No companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in the sample. This definition held up in 1968, however, its strict application became more difficult through the years. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business and deriving a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining.

The useful minerals can be subdivided into two large groups. One comprises those which are mined because of their chemical composition. They represent the natural resources of certain materials or of energy (coal). The second group is used not because of their chemical composition but because of certain physical properties or combinations of physical properties. A large number of minerals are mined because of their hardness, their electrical and thermal properties, their color or plasticity. There has been increasing recognition of the value of mineral synthesis during the past 30 years. This is illustrated by the development of improved aircraft spark plugs and chemical porcelain about the time of the first World War. During World War II the impact of crystal chemistry upon ceramics became most pronounced. New ceramic bodies were tailor-made, such as those designed with a high dielectric constant and low power loss, for use in high-voltage, high-frequency communication. In the field of refractories special materials were needed for unusual heat-resisting service in jet and rocket engines, and in the processing of fissionable materials. The only fine coal washer with proved automatic controls, the feldspar jig is capable of good efficiencies even at low separating gravities, handles a variety of products, and treats 150 tph and over. IN continental Europe the feldspar jig is used almost exclusively for cleaning the fine sizes of coal; it operates with an artificial bed, made up generally of pieces of feldspar or of any other hard and heavy rock with good cleavages. A primitive form of this machine requiring close supervision was used in this country years ago, but output was small. The modern machines are generally air-pulsated Baum-type jigs, with capacities up to 150 tph, and treat sizes from % in. to 0, usually previously dedusted or deslimed. These jigs are equipped with very accurate and sensitive automatic controls insuring satisfactory operation even at low separating gravity and with feeds irregular in quality and quantity. This paper will deal more particularly with coal cleaning separation, but the technical studies apply equally to all minerals. Theory of the Feldspar Jig To understand fully the operation of the feldspar jig and to appreciate its potential value, it is necessary to measure and analyze the motion of small particles of various specific gravities, falling in various media, under various conditions. As no practical formulas were available for that purpose, the writer has developed new theories and established new sets of formulas, which cannot be demonstrated here. They are applicable to all minerals and to many problems of coal or mineral concentration. These formulas do not pretend to absolute accuracy, but results, tested by comparison with experimentally recorded data, are sufficient for practical purposes, as they give definite indications of trends, relative values, and order of magnitude of the many factors involved. For pulsating motions no earlier formulas are available. In the case of continuous currents or motions, such formulas as Rittinger&apos;s, Allen&apos;s, or Stokes&apos;, over a hundred years old, apply only to special shapes and sizes of particles, involve factors and coefficients difficult to measure or appreciate, and deal only with free motions. They are of little use in solving practical problems. Units used with the formulas presented here are in the CGS system. Lateral friction and suction have been taken into account according- to methods currently used in aerodynamics, and only hindered motion is dealt with. As the feldspar jig is primarily intended to create a fluid bed condition, the mixture of fluids and solids obtained is homogeneous, and the apparent specific gravity of the separating medium is calculated accordingly. For instance, if 20 pct of the volume is coal and shale, with an average of 1.60 sp gr, in a liquid of 1.10 sp gr, the actual specific gravity of the separating fluid is 0.80 x 1.1 + 0.20 X 1.6 = 1.20. The fundamental equations are as follows: The general motion of a particle falling in a medium of specific gravity equal to u, hindered motion. is dv/dt = g/Ls [ L (s-u) - u/g v2 [1] g = 981 cm per sec, acceleration of gravity, and L = thickness of the particle of specific gravity (s) and velocity (v). The initial acceleration dv/dt = g (1-u/s ) [2] is a function of the specific gravity of the particle, only for a given medium, and independent of its dimensions—an ideal separating condition. The terminal velocity Vt = gxL- (s-u)/u, [3] for a given value of u, is a function of s and L. Two particles, L, s, and L2 s2, are said to be equivalent if they have the same terminal velocity, and accordingly L1/L2=s2-u/s1-u. [4] Two such particles cannot be separated by continuous currents, in any concentrating device. This work has for its purpose the establishment of a new method for determining the structural composition of alloys. The area occupied by a constituent on a few representative photomicrographs of the alloy is measured, by a planimeter, especially designed for metallographic work, and the volume and proportional weight of the constituent calculated. Experiments have shown that the results are accurate enough to justify the application of the method to many problems in metallographic research instead of chemical analysis. The advantage of the method is the possibility of determining the amount of the constituents without separating them from the alloy; their composition may also be determined if the ultimate chemical analysis of the alloy is known. Suppose Fig. 1 represents a part of a photomicrograph on which the total area of the black figures is to be found. By a system of parallel lines drawn short equal distances apart all figures may be divided into trapezoids. As the area of a trapezoid is equal to its median multiplied by its altitude, the relation between the total areas of the black and the white figures comprised within each strip is equal to the relation between the sums of medians for these figures respectively. This is also true for the whole area of the photomicrograph. Therefore, to determine the total areas of the black and white figures we must first find the proportion between the sums of the medians and then divide the area of the whole photomicrograph in the same proportion.

DURING the past few years a radically new process for the magnetic roasting of iron ores has been investigated and developed by Pickands Mather & Co. and the Erie Mining Co. in the Erie laboratory at Hibbing, Minn. This process, originally devised by Dr. P. H. Royster of Washington, D. C., involves the use of a roasting technique quite different from older methods. It has now been demonstrated that iron-bearing materials can be roasted as effectively as by any previously known method, and at a much lower cost. The increasing shortage of highgrade iron ores in this country has accelerated the search for new methods that would permit low grade materials to be utilized. The concept of magnetically roasting low grade nonmagnetic ores such as the oxidized taconites and then separating such material magnetically has always had considerable appeal. The magnetic concentration idea is attractive because of the sharpness of the separations and cheapness of the method. Heretofore, however, the equipment and the processes available for the magnetizing-roasting -step have left much to be desired. The customary equipment available for reduction roasting has been: 1-multiple hearth furnaces, 2-rotary kilns, and 3-shaft type kilns. In addition, it is understood that some work has been done in magnetically roasting fine ores by a process using the FluoSolids principle, but little information on this process is available. The multiple hearth kiln has been used the most but first costs and operating costs have been high because of low capacity, high maintenance, and poor gas utilization. Magnetic roasting can be done in a rotary kiln, but the radiation losses are high and the conversion to magnetite is usually unsatisfactory because of poor contact between the gases and the solids. Of the shaft-type furnaces, probably the most efficient yet developed is that designed by E. W. Davis of the Minnesota Mines Experiment Station. This furnace was operated at Cooley, Minn., during 1934-1937 but was abandoned in 1937 because the operation was uneconomic. Heretofore the basic concept behind most magnetic roasting processes has been the idea of heating iron ore to a temperature of 800° to 1100 °F in a strong reducing atmosphere, preferably either carbon monoxide or hydrogen. Temperatures under 800°F were undesirable since excessive roasting time was required. Temperatures over 1100°F were avoided because of the danger of converting part of the iron to ferrous oxide which is nonmagnetic. In the new roasting process, the operation is carried on in a shaft furnace using a controlled atmosphere containing a low percentage of reducing gas. The temperature in the roasting zone is considerably higher than with the usual reducing gas and this speeds up the reduction time. Portions of the spent furnace gases are cooled and recirculated and this together with the good contact between ore and gas makes for high reducing gas utilization. High heat economy is secured by recuperating heat from the roasted ore by passing the cold reducing gases countercurrent to flow of ore. The heat transfer principle is similar to that employed in a pebble stove and to that used in the Erie Mining Co. furnace at Aurora, Minn., for pelletizing fine magnetite concentrates derived from taconite. The theory of controlled atmosphere during the roasting operation can best be appreciated by inspecting the equilibrium diagram of the Fe-C-O system shown in Fig. 1. An inspection of this diagram shows that in certain areas magnetite, Fe3O4, is the only stable form of iron. A further inspection of this table shows that if the proper ratio is maintained between carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, such a gas will be reducing with respect to hematite, Fe2O3, and will be oxidizing with respect to both ferrous oxide, FeO, and iron, Fe. It should be kept in mind that the formation of ferrous oxide in a roasting operation is harmful, since this oxide is nonmagnetic; if it forms in any quantity, it will cause substantial loss of iron in the ensuing magnetic separation step. If a ratio of approximately three parts carbon dioxide to one of carbon monoxide is maintained, the resulting operation can be carried on at a relatively high temperature without fear of over-reduction. Specifically, most of the tests in the Erie furnace have been made at a temperature of 1500° to 1600°F, with an entrant gas containing approximately 5 pct carbon monoxide and 15 pct carbon dioxide, with the remainder largely nitrogen. It should be remembered that the ratios of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide shown in Fig. 1 hold even though the bulk of the gas is an inert gas such as nitrogen. It may surprise many to learn that a gas containing as low as 3 pct carbon monoxide, and 12 pct carbon dioxide with the remainder nitrogen is an extremely effective reducing gas in the 1000° to 1600°F temperature range. The reducing gas is not limited to carbon monoxide, and mixtures of hydrogen and carbon monoxide may be used effectively, provided that a similar ratio is maintained between the reducing gases and carbon dioxide and water vapor. For a more detailed explanation of the theory involved, the reader is referred to U. S. patents 2,528,552 and 2,528,553. From a safety standpoint, the weak reducing gas used in the furnace offers an advantage. Its composition is such that it is well below the limits of explosion should air enter a hot furnace. This condition is not true with the usual reducing furnace, in which a gas rich in carbon monoxide or hydrogen is used. The thermodynamic properties of liquid Mg-Ge alloys have been determined between 1000°and 1500°K by an isopiestic method. Germanium specimens, heated in a temperature gradient and contained in covered graphite crucibles of special geometry, were equilibrated with magrtesium vapor in closed titanium tubes. The crucible design allowed free access of magnesium vapor to the samples during the equilibration to form alloys of magnesium and germanium, but prevented magnesium losses from the crucibles on quenching the titaniuin tubes to terminate the experimental runs, thus preserving the equilibrium alloy compositions. The activities and partial molar enthalpies of magnesium and the integral thermodynamic properties of the system were calculated from the experimental data. THE Mg-Ge phase diagram&apos; shows one congruent melting compound, Mg2Ge, of essentially stoichio-metric composition, two eutectics, and very limited terminal solid solubilities. Very little information is available on the thermodynamic properties of the Mg-Ge system. The free energy of formation of Mg,Ge was recently deter-mined2 by a Knudsen cell technique in the temperature range 610° to 760°C. The standard enthalpy of formation of Mg,Ge was measured calorimetrically by Bever and coworkers.3 The present study was undertaken as part of a general investigation of the thermodynamic properties of the homologous series of Mg-Group IVB systems, i.e., Mg-Pb,4 Mg-Sn,5 Mg-Ge, and Mg-Si. An isopiestic technique was used which was developed by the authors5 for investigating the thermodynamic properties of liquid Mg-Sn alloys. Specimens of the nonvolatile component, contained in covered graphite crucibles, are heated in a temperature gradient in an evacuated and sealed titanium reaction tube, and equilibrated with magnesium vapor of known pressure. The method employs crucibles of special geometry which preserve the high-temperature equilibrium composition of liquid alloys having a highly volatile component such as magnesium on termination of the experimental runs by quenching the crucibles to room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE First reduction germanium of 99.999+ pct purity (Eagle-Pitcher Co., Cincinnati, Ohio) and 99.99+ pct magnesium metal (Dominion Magnesium Ltd., Toronto, Canada) were used. The graphite crucibles were machined from high-density (1.92 g per cu cm) graphite rods (Basic Carbon Corp., Sanborn, N.Y.) which had a maximum ash content of less than 0.04 pct. The non-reactivity of graphite with germanium at the temperatures used in this study had been previously established by Scace and Sleck.6 The experimental procedure has been previously described in detail.5 The selection of a particular crucible geometry for a run was determined by a combination of imposed experimental conditions, the principle being that more tightly covered crucibles were required to preserve alloy compositions during quenching when higher magnesium pressures and higher specimen temperatures were used. Depending upon the composition range of the equilibrated alloys the source of the magnesium vapor was either pure magnesium or a two-phase mixture of Mg2Ge + Ge-rich liquid of known magnesium pressure. The experimental runs can be divided into the following three groups on the basis of crucible geometry and magnesium source material. Crucibles with Small Holes and Pure Magnesium Reservoirs. The crucible dimensions were identical to those of the Mg-Sn investigation5 except that the hole diameters were reduced to 0.010 in. because of the higher temperatures and higher magnesium pressures involved in the Mg-Ge system. During an equilibration run, magnesium vapor diffused from the reservoir to each specimen through the small holes, one drilled through the crucible lid and two others drilled through graphite baffles positioned vertically inside the crucible between the lid hole and the specimen. Since the magnesium pressure was high, i.e., in the range 117 to 277 Torr, during the equilibration time of approximately 24 hr, equilibration was not impeded by these holes. A specimen composition at equilibrium was fixed by the relative temperatures of the specimen and the reservoir, and by the thermodynamic properties of the system. Upon brine quenching the titanium reaction tube to end a run the vapor pressure of magnesium above the liquid alloys decreased exponentially with decreasing temperature, and the small cross-sectional areas of the holes (4.9 x 10"* sq cm) drastically reduced magnesium losses from the crucibles. Because of its low vapor pressure, germanium losses from crucibles during a run were at most 0.2 mg for pure germanium and correspondingly less for the alloys. This crucible geometry satisfactorily retained the equilibrium alloy compositions on quenching for magnesium-rich (from 3 to 33 at. pct Ge) alloys provided their temperatures were below the melting

The effect of alkali sulfates in promoting the sul-fation of nickel and copper in a bulk sulfide flota -tion concentrate by fluidized bed roasting has been studied in the laboratory, and it was shown that the various alkali sulfates promote sulfation to approximately the same extent. The sulfation of a mixture of synthetically prepared iron and nickel oxide and of nickel ferrite has also been studied. Nickel sulfation was promoted by high ratios of Fe:Ni and by the presence of sodium sulfate. THE work described in this paper was a continuation of earlier studies into the role of alkali sulfates in promoting the sulfation roasting of nickel sulfides1,2 in an endeavor to determine how the system was affected by the presence of compounds of iron and copper. The earlier work1 showed that, in the sulfation of NiO at 680°C, the reaction was limited by the formation of an impermeable film of nickel sulfate on the oxide surface. The relative effect of the various alkali sulfates in promoting nickel sulfation varied in the order: Li > Na >Cs > Rb > K A study of alkali sulfate/ nickel sulfate interactions at high temperatures showed that the promoting action was due to the fact that the nickel sulfate product layer sintered and agglomerated only when the more active additives were present. This resulted in the formation of discontinuities in the nickel sulfate layer so that diffusion of the sulfating gases to the NiO surface was no longer impeded and the reaction could proceed to completion. A similar explanation was used for the observation that sodium and lithium sulfates promote the oxidation of NiS to NiO at temperatures below 750°C since small amounts of nickel sulfate were formed during oxidation.2 It was of interest to study the effect of alkali sulfates on the sulfate roasting of a sulfide flotation concentrate which is typical of material treated commercially. In order to control temperature it is essential to roast sulfides in a fluidized bed and this technique was therefore used, although the batchwise operation of a small-scale laboratory reactor does not reproduce all conditions which prevail in full-scale continuous plant. The results obtained are therefore only comparative, and cannot be used for predicting the optimum conditions for metal extraction. The sulfation of synthetically prepared mixed oxides of nickel + copper and nickel + iron and of nickel ferrite was also studied to evaluate the relative effects of alkali sulfates with more complex systems. SULFATION ROASTING OF A SULFIDE FLOTATION CONCENTRATE The bulk sulfide flotation concentrate used in this work contained 7.92 pct Ni, 1.74 pct Cu, 35.66 pct Fe, and 31.28 pct S. The sulfide minerals present in order of abundance were pyrrhotite FeS, pyrite FeS2, pentlandite (FeNi)S, and chalcopyrite CuFeS2. Two samples described as coarse and fine were used. The coarse sample, which was a flotation concentrate (58 pct plus 300 mesh), was ground to 100 pct minus 350 mesh to produce the fine sample. Before roasting, the sample of sulfide concentrate was agglomerated by wetting witli a solution of the alkali sulfate (or water), thoroughly mixing, and drying at 110°C. This gave a cake which was gently crushed and screened, the -18 +100 mesh fraction being used for fluidized bed roasting. A similar-size fraction had been used by the authors in pilot plant work with a 4-in.-diam fluidized bed reactor.&apos; In this work it was found that the molar ratio of additive to the total iron + nickel + copper content of the sulfide sample should be adjusted to a value of approximately 0.06, as this was the optimum amount necessary for nickel sulfation. Experimental. The fluidized bed reactor consisted of a quartz tube approximately 60 cm long and 30 mm in diameter resting in a vertical tube furnace. The sulfide bed (30 g) was supported on a bed of -4 +12 mesh quartz particles 3 cm high, which rested on a sintered quartz disc welded to the tube. The temperature of the furnace was controlled with a variable transformer to give a final bed temperature of 680°C. The bed was fluidized with air or mixtures of air + 10 pct v/v SO2, at a total apparent gas velocity of 60 to 65 cm per sec at 680°C. A numerical method for solving partial differential equations in steady state fluid flow is described. This method, known as the "relaxation method," has two advantages over analytical methods: (1) practically any problem can be solved, and (2) a solution can be obtained quickly. A disadvautage is that the solution is not general. The method is applied to core analysis and relative permeability measurement to calculate constriction effects and to calculate the true pressure drop measured by a center tap in a Hassler type relative permeability apparatus. Further applications are suggested. INTRODUCTION Many problems in fluid flow cannot be solved analytically because of the nature of the boundary conditions. For many problems, however. an exact answer is not necessary because boundary conditions are not exactly defined or the parameters describing the porous medium are not accurately known. The relaxation method can be used to obtain an approximate answer easily and quickly for the flow of incompressible fluids in porous media. The method can also be used for other types of problems, such as determining the stress in a shaft under load. or the temperature distribution during steady state heat flow. In this discussion only calculations concerned with the flow of fluids in porous media will be considered. The method was introduced by R. V. Southwell in 1935.&apos; THEORY The treatment given here follows that given by Enimons.2 Consider a porous medium to be replaced entirely by a net of tubes of equal length and uniform cross-sectional area as shown in part in Fig. 1. Assume that the net of tubes behaves exactly like the porous medium which it replaces; that is, the net can be made fine enough to reproduce exactly the porous medium. Assume also that Darcy&apos;s Law can be used to calculate the flow from one point to another point through these tubes. The flow from point 1 to point 0 is KA . ------ P-P) .......(11 where a is the distance between points: K is the "permeability" of a tube; A is the cross-sectional area of a tube; is the viscosity of the liquid in the porous medium; and (P1 — P0) is the pressure difference between point 1 and point 0. If, on the other hand, the pressure is not known, the pressure can be guessed at these points. Then. unless the guess is perfect. Equation (3) will not be satisfied at all of the points. Equation (4) shows how much the pressure guess is in error at point 0 with respect to the surrounding points. A positive residual means that the pressure is too low, and a negative residual means that the pressure is too high. To bring the residual, 6. to zero in order to satisfy Equation (3). it is necessary to make changes in the pressure guesses. Equation (4) shows that a +1 change in Po will change the residual at point 0 by -4. A +1 change in the pressure at any of the four surrounding points will change the residual at point 0 by +l. Thus it can be seen that a change at any point will affect the residual at that point and the four surrounding points. By changing the pressure from point to point, all of the residuals can eventually be brought nearly to zero and the problem will be solved. This procedure is the essence of relaxation methods and is used to relax the residuals so that Equation (3) is satisfied at every point. The procedure can be most easily explained in detail by solving a simple problem. as Southwell says, "To explain every detail of a practical technique is to risk an appearance of complexity and difficulty which may repel the reader.
