The Selective Media Process was developed by the author in a laboratory provided by The Steams-Roger Manufacturing Co. It is the outcome of an investigation into the possibilities of coarse beneficiation by sink and float without using the conventional heavy media. Commercial work to date has been limited to the treatment of minus 3/8-in. iron ore at the Hill Trumbull washing plant of the Cleveland Clifis Iron Co., at Calumet, Minnesota. Two cut away prints of the machine are shown (Figs. I and 2). A rotary conical impeller is mounted within a stationary cone (Fig. 2). This impeller is adjustable vertically by a 12-ton screw jack. The speed of the impeller can be varied from 14 to 32 r.p.m. by the Reeves variable-speed motor pulley mounted on the 7½-hp. motor drive. Attached to the bottom of the stationary cone is the automatic control valve for sink product, actuated by a ¼-hp. gear motor. The sink product is dewatered in a conventional drag driven by a 7½-hp. motor and discharged onto an inclined conveyor containing from 6 to 10 per cent moisture. Two plants are operated at the Hill Trumbull property. All the ore is first treated in a typical washing plant (Fig. 3). when treating "wash ore" a finished concentrate can be produced by the log washers and Akins classifiers, as the separation involves only fine silica (minus 48-mesh) and free iron. The need for standard test methods in the minerals beneficiation industry is growing with the increasing complexity of our processes and the more stringent requirements imposed on the quality and uniformity of our products. Although solutions of our problems have never been easy, they will become increasingly difficult to achieve unless we can develop a reliable and reproducible set of test methods. Historically speaking, our need was greatest for methods of chemical analysis. As these methods developed, they improved our ability to determine the grade of ore and measure the effect of our beneficiation attempts. The entire concept of grade and recovery is only as old as chemical analysis. Then came physical measurements. Each new concept in minerals beneficiation was related to certain properties and required corresponding test methods: specific density for jigging, magnetic susceptibility for magnetic separation, and tumbler strength for pellets. And associated with each process was the need for size determination. Size measurement is probably the first physical test ever conceived, and yet we are still improving on it. Dry sieving was quite acceptable for direct-shipping ores, but we had to go to wet sieving to control pelletizing and flotation. Subsieve analyzers have extended our routine measurements to the subsieve sizes, hut not below a few microns. As we all know, the solution of slimes- beneficiation and pollution-abatement problems is hampered by the lack of reliable and reproducible test methods in the fine-particle size range.

The operating plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. is situated at Port Pirie in South Australia and it treats to finality the whole output of lead concentrates from the mines of The Zinc Corporation Ltd., North Broken Hill Ltd., and aroken Hill South Ltd. at Broken Hill, New South Wales. Lead bearing ores from other sources are also purchased for treatment and lead scrap and residues are treated on a toll charge basis. The present output of the plant is approximately 200000 tonnes of refined lead per annum and there is a substantial production of by-products including refined silver, gold, cadmium, antimonial lead alloys, copper matte and sulphuric acid. Recently the Company commenced the production of zinc by slag fuming and electrolysis from a six million ton dump of lead blast furnace slag, which has been accumulating at Port Pirie for over fifty years. The slag fuming plant contains two furnaces of conventional design, but features a high degree of pre-heat for the blast air and this is obtained by the use of all-metal recuperators. The raw zinc oxide fume produced by the plant is roasted in a rotary kiln prior to treatment in the leaching and electrolysis sections, which follow conventional practice for nigh current density plants. Present output is approximately 36000 tonnes of electrolytic zinc per annum.

The application of oil to coal for-the reduction of dust has greatly increased the consumers' satisfaction with solid fuels, especially those for domestic use. The combination of oil-treated coal and automatic firing by a small stoker has made possible clean, automatic heating with bituminous coal. This, with the added pressure of competition by other fuels, has caused a rapid development of oil treating practice. A variety of materials derived" from petroleum oils is available from which one may choose for treating a par-ticular coal. Until recently, however, little information had been published to guide the choice. It is most im-portant that the proper type and amount of oil be used in order that all coals marketed as "dustless" will be reason-ably dustless, and thereby maintain a good reputation for oil-treatment. During the past two and one-half years, an investigation of a number of the problems related to the treatment of coal with oil has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute. This project was jointly sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research. Inc., Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Sun Oil Company, and Viking Manufacturing Company. A progress report giving the principal results of the work of the first year was presented before the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in December 1937.1 The present paper is a summary of the entire inves-tigation.

A prototype equipment has been designed and built for the digital recording of well logs on magnetic tape at the same time that the regular film recording is made. The format of the digital tape produced is such that it can be used directly at the input of the ZBM 704, 7090 or other models of ZBM computers which accept digital magnetic tape. This apparatus has been used for the experimental field recording of dipmeter tape logs which were subsequently computed by means of an ZBM 704 or 7090. In this paper the equipment and the digital tape are described briefly, and their application to the computer-interpretation of dipmeter data is discussed. A principal element in the interpretation of the dipmeter log is the correlation of the three microresirtivity dipmeter curves to determine the depth displacements between them. Several correlation methods for computer use are considered, with particular attention to their sensitivity to error and their consumption of computer time. The tape data were used to compute information content of the dipmeter microresistivity curves in terms of their frequency spectra. The results show that the sampling rate used in recording the digital information is quite adequate and illustrate a use of the digital tape in evaluating the characteristics of new tools. Some examples of field results are shown. It can be foreseen that, when digital tape recording becomes available for general field use, a whole new realm of possibilities will be opened up for the processing of other well logs through computations, which hitherto were not feasible because they were too laborious and time-con.sunzing. INTRODUCTION The last few years have seen a revolution in the design and production of data-processing equipment. Stored-pro-gram digital computers have progressed from a research curiosity to the basis of a major industry. There are now hundreds of such machines in daily use in the United States. With the acceptance of a technique that was, in fact, already clearly described by John von Neumann in 1945, the last decade has seen great strides in the development'of components, reliability, programming systems and, most spectacularly, in the sheer number of machines built and in use. In 1957 there were enough digital computers available to the oil industry to justify the suggestion that it would be worthwhile to investigate the possibility of using these machines in processing well log data.' The first result of this investigation was the appearance of what may be referred to as the input-output bottleneck. Well logs are customarily recorded on film. To get these data into a machine required then (and still does): a time-consuming semi-automatic reading of the film; conversion of the log data to digital form; and recording these digital data in some medium acceptable for computer input, such as cards, magnetic tape, or punched paper tape. However, the recording, reading, and re-recording could only result in deterioration of the data. Therefore, it was concluded that the fist step should be the development of a new, more direct recording technique supplemental to the film recording, which would provide easy access to the digital computer. There are many solutions to the problem of recording log data in an easily recoverable form. After careful consideration it was decided to adopt the boldest solution which, it was felt, was also the most elegant. It was decided to record well logs directly, in the field, on magnetic tape in such a way that this tape could be used without further modification as an input to the IBM 704 or 7090 computer. To realize practical field recording of magnetic tape logs, it became necessary to develop in a rather small package, an analog-to-digital converter, a tape recorder, and the necessary multiplexing and control circuits to allow the simultaneous recording of a multiplicity of logging signals. The magnetic tape recording was to be made simultaneously with the conventional logging operation in such a way as not to interfere with it. Along with the development of hardware, it was necessary to begin development of interpretation techniques and machine programs that would exploit the power of the digital computer. Here, again, there is a long list of possible applications. After much consideration it was decided to concentrate on the interpretation of the dipmeter log as a first application. It is the object of this paper to describe in some detail the developments sketched in the last three paragraphs.

SOMETIMES family backgrounds have a deep, if not direct, influence on a man's lifework. Dean Callen's paternal grandfather came from Wales and was a mine official in the Pennsylvania anthracite field: his maternal grandfather was a retail coal dealer. His father and uncle began their careers a. breaker boys but later completed their educational work and ended up in the professions. With that background, and with the slate region ( Pen Argyl, Pa.. July 1;. 1888) as his birthplace it is not strange that "Cope" Callen became a teacher of mining engineering. Graduating from Lehigh with an E.M. in 1909, lie taught there for two years while working for his master's degree. In 1911 he returned to teaching, going to the University of Illinois as instructor in mining engineering. In 1917, he was called to West Virginia University as head of the department of mining engineering and director of mining extension. The extension work was about dead. bus a new staff was built and the six-weeks' short course in coal mining was revamped into an attractive and efficient course which has grown in popularity with the years. Callen's work attracted the attention of the Federal Board for Vocational Education and in 1919 he was invited to serve that board as special agent for mining, taking a six-months' leave front the University.

During the latter part of 1930 an agreement was reached among operators in Rumania to curtail the production of oil to about 100,000 bbl. per day. This agreement lasted only a few months and 1931 shows a new peak in production with an average yield of 136,900 bbl. per day as against an average of 116,600 bbl. per day for 1930. The total production for 1931 was 49,210,000 bbl.; an increase of 18.4 per cent over the previous year's production. It is interesting to compare the percentage production of the major companies to the potential production figures determined by the Government in September, 1930 (Table l), on the basis of which the proposed curtailment was to have been made. The three companies listed first in this table show an increase in average production for 1931 over their estimated potential production rating. This increase might be attributed at least in part to the recent development of the Boldesti field, which is controlled by these companies and of which the production at present is nearly 10 per cent of the total oil output for Rumania. Among the other fields, Moreni still holds first place with an output of 33.6 per cent, followed by Gura-Ocnitzei with 29.3 per cent. Copper from Central Africa was well known to the Arab slave traders who depredated the country in the nineteenth century. By the 1870's slave raiding was so intense that the habits of the tribes were disrupted, and they no longer worked the copper deposits or made the crosses and bars of copper which had been their custom. In fact, the country had been greatly depopulated by the slave raiders. News of this horror was spread to the civilized world by missionaries and, in particular, by David Livingstone's writings. Whether to extend geographic knowledge, to suppress slavery or for national aggrandizement, the rush for African territory was on at the end of the nineteenth century. Cecil Rhodes at this time was established by his successes in diamonds and gold. He obtained the blessing of Lord Salisbury in 1889 to form the British South Africa Company under crown charter. His objectives were to occupy the lands north of the Zambezi for England and pay for development out of the country's mineral deposits. He planned to occupy the territory and close the gap to form an all-British route from the Cape to Cairo, one of his great dreams. With this master plan in mind he sent his agents into the field to make treaties with the tribes.

The chemical industry is constantly looking for new materials which either are more resistant to corrosion than those now available or have improved physical properties to meet the requirements of higher temperatures and greater pressures. Attack by acids is one of the more important forms of corrosion and in the last few years the development of acid-resistant alloys has been quite rapid. Perhaps the most notable example is that of nitric acid, the problem of which has largely been solved by the chromium-iron and chromium-iron-nickel alloys. Sulfuric acid may be handled in lead, iron, or the iron-silicon alloys, depending on conditions. As to hydrochloric acid, no metal or alloy can be called entirely satisfactory for handling this acid under plant conditions.' The results of our investigations on the resistance of the nickel-molybdenum alloys to hydrochloric acid have been confirmed by those of Guertler, Rohn, Schulz, Jenge, and others12 but thus far only one such alloy has approached commercial production in Germany; this contains approximately 15 per cent. chromium and 7 per cent. molybdenum with the remainder chiefly nickel. Dr. S. W. Parr, as far back as 1914, developed a complex alloy known as "illium," with a nickel base and containing some molybdenum. 3 Dr. Parr was primarily interested in an alloy for lining bomb calorimeters, and while illium does show good resistance to acid it is too expensive for general use. Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite by the mineralogist. The word glauconite is from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was dug and marketed as a fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of prepared fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to the decline of greensand for agricultural application. The material has since been recognized for use in water treatment. Unfortunately, in spite of large reserves and worldwide distribution, the mineral has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This lack is probably due to a paucity of research on its potential commercial application. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and generally low potash content (up to 8% ), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of up to 100 tons per acre were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 20 to 50 tons per acre (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of, slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as "poison," "burning," or "black marls." The availability of higher-grade potash salts from other mineral sources, and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers, displaced the agricultural use of greensand during the later 1800s. During the mid-1800s the domestic greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000 per year. Toward the end of the century, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000. By 1910 there were only six or eight greensand producers, grossing less than $5000 (Tyler, 1934). There was a small revival in the industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the later 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace-element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base-exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was utilized in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base-exchange property of glauconite was recognized for water treatment, and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. The need for instruments to measure the movement of fluids and gas in wells has been recognized by engineers for many years. Information regarding flow in the producing interval has a direct bearing on completion practices in new wells and also provides information on the production characteristics of the well. Many hours of engineering time are spent in planning and completing wells but knowledge as to whether or not the original planning has produced the desired results has not always been complete. Many questions such as the following often arise: Why is it that two wells are completed under supposedly identical conditions, yet one well is a good one and the other is a poor one? Are the sands that look the best on the electric log contributing to the production? These and many other conditions in the producing well need to be under- stood in order to develop more efficient production practices and to improve on methods of completing new wells. It is the purpose of this paper to briefly describe one type of instrument, outline the methods of running the equipment and show the results of surveys made under various conditions. With an understanding of the use of this type of survey its importance can be evaluated in relation to the problems encountered by the operator. DESCRIPTION OF INSTRUMENT The instrument is a velocity recorder employing a clock-controlled 16mm film for recording the rpm of an extremely sensitive rotor which is rotated by the flow of fluids or gas in a well. The helical-vaned rotor and shaft, weighing one-half of one ounce are an integral unit exposed to the well fluids and are the only moving parts not enclosed in the fluid-tight housing. No packing or fluid seal of these parts is necessary and the shaft is mounted top and bottom on special jeweled bearings. Fig. A is the lower part of the instrument showing rotor and shaft with the protecting housing sleeve removed. The rpm of the rotor is recorded on the moving film by a combination electrical and optical system. The record is a series of dashes on the film, each dash and space representing twenty (20) revolutions of the rotor. As the movement of the film is controlled by the clock the number of dashes and spaces in one minute of film travel represents the rpm of the rotor. The range of the instrument is from 0 to 2,500 rprn. The barrel or housing is 1-11/16 in. OD and seven feet long. Various types of expanding fluid traps are attached to the lower end of the instrument to direct the flow through the 1 in. orifice containing the rotor. * Kennecott Copper Corp. gets Charles R. Cox as president on Jan. 1. Mr. Cox is resigning his position as president of Carnegie-Illinois to take the new post with Kennecott, left vacant by the death of Mr. Stannard in September. •The ECA signed a contract in December to advance X3,600,000 to Newmont Mining Corp. to aid development of lead and zinc mines in French Morocco. The funds are to be repaid in lead and zinc for the United States' stockpile over a period of seven years. The mines are owned by the Societe des Mines de Zellidja, with which organization Newmont is associated. • Under the direction of John M. Brooks, Jr., general manager, the Matahambra mine in Cuba, will probably produce sufficient tonnage to make 4 million lb of copper per month during 1950. The grade is presently running between 7 and 10 pet. •S. H. Ash reports that the fatality rate per million-man-hr for the anthracite industry for 1949, through November, is 0.78. This is 15 pct better than that achieved during 1948, which was the lowest fatal injury rate in coal mining history. The first full year on record without a major disaster was recorded in 1949 (p. 34). •The Atomic Energy Commission has authorized the production of 200 lb of uranium metal for use under AEC license in non-Commission research projects. •A national survey of projected 1950 purchases of new machine tools, machine tool accessories, materials handling equipment, etc., just completed by the American Society of Tool Engineers reveals that, of the companies reporting, 80 pct state that they plan to buy either more equipment or the same amount as in 1948. • Armour Research Foundation is conducting investigations for the use of clay and shale deposits to make lightweight aggregates. The material is heated until it expands and forms material suitable for mixing with cement which it is hoped will be lighter, stronger, have better insulating qualities and will lower the cost of concrete. •In the first six months of 1949 the bituminous coal miners' average hourly earnings were $1.94 -as compared with X1.392_ national average for all manufacturing. Average annual earnings of full-time employees in the bituminous coal mines in 1948 were $3387 as compared with $2809 for all industry. •LaSalle Business Bulletin reports: "year ends on a rising trend in industry and trade ... nearly record-breaking demand from almost all sources keeps business high... most indicators but little below postwar peak... forces keeping activity high arestill powerful--changes in general business conditions likely to be slow and moderate." •Office of Internal Trade of the Commerce Department requests that technical data significant to the national security which is to be sent outside of the United States be submitted to it for an official opinion on the desirability of transmitting such information. This voluntary compliance program is part of our national security control. • Blast furnace slag reduced to 12 to 16 mesh is being used for sanding track at the Mont Coal mines of Armco. The slag replaces silica sand which caused silicosis. It has proved so effective and cheap that tests are being made to use the slag for rock dusting.

AN investigation has been made of the Ni-Cr system for the purpose of elucidating certain points, namely the nature of aging in both terminal solid solutions and the nature of the phase diagram. Information pertaining to solubilities and precipitation has been obtained. Experimentation Five alloys, Table I, were arc melted in a cold copper crucible using electrolytic chromium and car-bony1 nickel, both dry hydrogen treated. These 100 g buttons were homogenized 24 hr at 1300°C in dry hydrogen and air cooled. Powders were prepared by filing or pulverizing and subsequent heat treatment was done in vacuum or helium using titanium chips as a getter. Powder of —80 mesh was filed from the 60 pct Ni alloy quenched from 1000°C and was sealed in silica under vacuum using a 250 °C outgassing. After aging as indicated in Table I1 the lattice parameters were measured on the quenched samples using the standard cos" 6 extrapolation. These parameters are considered accurate to roughly 0.0001A. In all cases chromium lines of 2.8812 ± 0.0005Å at 30°C were found. Drastic quenching from sufficiently high temperatures produced very sharp body-centered-cubic lines in the first four alloys without indications of transformations. Temperatures to 1250°C were used. Solid samples less than 1/16 in. thick were quenched in water without transformation and the powders could be adequately quenched in small helium filled thin wall silica tubing using a water quench. For those powder samples which were quenched from the two phase field the relative intensity of the body-centered-cubic lines and the face-centered-cubic lines were estimated and extrapolated to give the indicated solubility data in Fig. 1. The data for the two higher alloys were somewhat limited, the plotted points being the lowest temperature where no nickel phase was found. Neither filing, abrading, pulverizing, nor cooling to —190°C produced any new diffraction lines for solid samples quenched from the single phase region, nor did the character of the body-centered-cubic lines change Single phase body-centered-cubic powders likewise did not change on cooling to —190°C. Also, samples which had some precipitation due to inadequate quenching showed no additional changes under these conditions. The first change apparent by X-ray diffraction form samples quenched almost fast enough to prevent precipitation was the diffuseness of the body-centered-cubic lines, particularly on the low angle side, For slower cooling rates the diffuse face-centered-cubic lines appeared. Work on the large grained castings showed profuse streaking through some of the Laue spots while oscillating patterns showed broad body-centered-cubic and face-cen-tered-cubic lines as well as some new lines. For the 23.6 pct Ni alloy the new lines corresponded to 2.16, 1.96, and 1.86A and were more similar in character to the face-centered-cubic lines than the body-centered-cubic lines. Samples which were air cooled gave only face-centered-cubic and body-centered-cubic lines which were still broad. One pattern indicated that face-centered-cubic (111) plane was parallel to a body-centered-cubic (110) plane. For those samples which were examined by light microscopy there were details which were not resolved. However, varied and beautiful structures were obtained. Fig. 2 is of an alloy quenched in a helium filled silica tube from the single phase region and shows particles associated apparently with dislocations which are arranged in low angle boundaries. Finer, general precipitation has also taken place within the grains. Figs. 3 to 5 show the variety of structures produced in these alloys on continuous cooling. It appears that there are four distinct modes of precipitation as evidenced by these, figures. Annealing these structures at higher tem-peratures in the two phase field gives structures as shown in Fig. 6, which shows nickel plates in the chromium matrix which reprecipitated nickel on a much finer scale of the final quench. Lower annealing temperatures and shorter times naturally give finer plates of the nickel-rich phase. Samples of the first four alloys were annealed for appreciable times between 900º and 1250°C and gave structures like Fig. 6. The relative amounts of the two phases were measured and extrapolated to give solubility data as indicated in Fig. 1. The point at 1250°C was deduced from data of Oxx.1 These and most of the other samples were checked for ferromagnetism but none was apparent. In fact, it appeared that the magnetic susceptibilities were not more than three times that for paramagnetic chromium. Discussion In Fig. 1 it is seen that the solubility of nickel in chromium can be represented by a slightly curved line on the usual log X vs 1/T plot, These data are believed to be accurate to roughly 5 to 10º. I. INTRODUCTORY METALLURGICAL research has discovered many an alloy possessing properties not combined in any single metal, and progress still consists chiefly in the investigation and utilization of alloys. In the case of iron, the demands of automobiles, high-speed machines and high-duty engines have led to the production of special iron alloys which will meet any reasonable specifications in that field. In like manner, the bronzes, brasses and other alloys of copper have been brought to remarkable perfection, and for nearly every industrial purpose some alloy has been found more suitable than the pure metal. Less complete success has attended the attempt to find substitutes for gold, platinum, and the other precious metals. Indeed, it is not likely that a material can be produced which will possess all the properties of any one of them; yet it is reasonable to hope that, for any given use, the properties required may, be found in some less expensive material. Thus, in incandescent electric lamps, the wire passing through the thick glass neck of the bulb was, until recently, almost universally made of platinum, for the single reason that no other known material, suitable as a conductor, had the same coefficient of expansion as glass. But a comparatively recent investigation of the iron-nickel series' has shown that alloys of those metals may be produced, the coefficient of expansion of which can be accurately controlled between that of iron or nickel and zero. Thus, in that particular industry, a substitute for platinum has been found. According to statistical reports, not only considerable quantities of gold and iridium, but also more than one-third of the annual supply of platinum, are used (and, in the nature of the case, irrevocably lost) by dentists. Platinum is thus employed in several forms. The effects of anisotropic or directional permeability on the areal sweep efficiency and the flow capacity are examined. The paper points out the importance of taking directional permeability into consideration in planning a flood. It analyzes the two-dimensional flow pattern associated with the skewed line drive for a unit mobility ratio. The direct and staggered line drives are treated as special cases of the skewed line drive. Analytical expressions are developed for the areal sweep efficiency at breakthrough and the flow capacity. They are related to the spacing between like wells, the distance between a row of injectors and the nearest row of producers, and the degree of skewness of the line drive. The latter quantity is defined such that it is equal to zero for the direct line drive and equals one-half for the staggered line drive. The areal sweep efficiency and the flow capacity depend also on the orientation of the flood pattern with respect to the principal axis of anisotropy. The paper provides a simple method for determining the areal sweep efficiency and the flow capacity for a formation in which the permeability in the bedding plane is anisotropic. INTRODUCTION Directional or anisotropic permeability is manifested by the ability of the formation to conduct fluids more readily along certain preferred directions. This situation occurs in many producing formationsl-4 and is usually attributed to depositional features in which the sand grains are oriented in a preferred direction. In some cases it results from the formation of a major and a minor fracture system. 4 Directional permeability should be taken into account in many phases of the production and exploration activities. Recognizing its existence in the formation of interest and planning accordingly can lead to increased recovery and substantial savings. For instance, the areal sweep efficiency in a water flood depends to a great extent on the orientation of the flood pattern with respect to the principal axis of permeability. Anisotropic5 permeability is specified by the directions of its three principal axes and the permeability along each axis. The principal axes of permeability are mutually perpendicular. This paper deals with the areal sweep efficiency at breakthrough and the flow capacity for formations with aniscltropic permeability. The flood pattern considered consists of alternate rows of injecting and producing wells. The rows of wells are parallel and form a developed, skewed line drive which is illustrated in Fig. 1. The staggered and direct line drives are treated as special cases of the skewed line drive. PRELLMINARY CONSIDERATIONS The formations considered in this paper are assumed to be of uniform thickness and porosity. AS part of a program to investigate the diffusive properties of dilute ternary austenites, we have made a determination of the effects of cobalt on the activity of carbon in y iron. Samples of pure iron and Fe-Co alloys were equilibrated at 1000°C in controlled CO-C02 atmospheres, following the procedure of R. P. smith.' The 0.010-in.-thick samples were analyzed for carbon by microcombustion analysis2 to give a set of isoactivity curves. The latter were converted to activity-coefficient (standard state at infinite dilution) plots by combination with Smith's data' for the activity of carbon in pure iron measured in a CO-C02 mixture. Table I shows the composition of the base alloys used, while Fig. 1 shows the experimental results superimposed on a set of curves generated by the relation In the notation of Wagner,' the interaction parameter is the second coefficient on the right, Eq. [I] adequately correlates the experimental points for those alloys which were prepared from electrolytic iron by arc-melting (2,4, and 7 pct Co). The results for the 10 pct Co alloy (supplied by Crucible Steel Co.) do not correlate with the others. In fact, the experimental points for this alloy correspond to an interaction parameter of It is possible that the interaction parameter is a function of concentration for large cobalt additions, but we are inclined to attribute the discrepancy to the presence of a significant amount of aluminum added to this alloy for deoxidation purposes (Table I). Preliminary measurements for the system Fe-C-A1 have indicated an interaction parameter of Which implies that the effect of aluminum in solution on the carbon activity is sixty times greater than the effect of an equal weight percentage of cobalt. These observations cast some doubt on the precision of the results of Chandhok, Hirth, and Dulis who used this same 10 pct alloy for their experiments, obtaining an interaction parameter of E = 2.2. There is considerable doubt as to the activity of a plane Fe-C system. Using a CH4-Ha mixture, Smith obtains cg = 6.1 for the effect of carbon on the activity of carbon in austenite, rather than the value of 8.9 given in Eq. [I]. The use of CHa-Ha mixtures has recently been questioned by Kaufman, Radcliff, and cohens who state that there is some possibility that other hydrocarbons are formed. Fortunately, the determination of the interaction parameter is not sensitive to the coefficient of Nc. For example, using the CHI-H2 results we obtain a value which is almost the same as that obtained using the CO-CO, results. The authors wish to thank Mr. E. J.
