THE zinc deposits under development by the Universal Exploration Co., a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, are close to Jefferson City, Tenn., a small town about 30 miles northeast of Knoxville, Tenn., and are served by the Southern Railway. The first zinc mining in this district was in the old Mossy Creek mine at the north edge of the town, opened for oxidized ores in 1871 and later worked for sulfide ores. An oxidized zinc ore deposit (carbonates and silicates) was opened near New Market in 1900 and worked through the war period by the G1'8sselli Chemical Co., producing around 25,000 tons of oxidized ore. In recent years a sulfide deposit has been found and developed but is not producing. About 1% miles south of this a small body of sulfide ore was developed by open cut, but the operation was unsuccessful. The Universal Exploration Co. entered the district in 1926 and, after extensive exploration, has been operating an oxidized ore-body since Janual:y, 1928, and has been developing a sulfide ore body since July, 1928.

The clay particles of 2 microns or less required for modern paper coating are predominantly flat plates, lying smoothly on the sheet and producing a high gloss. Operating speeds of today's coating machines necessitate a clay composition of 60 and sometimes 70 pct solids as against the 35 to 40 pct required in the past. Since clays in suspension may solidify in flow, only those of intrinsically low viscosity can be used as high coating solids. THE literature of paper technology contains a number of articles having reference to developments in the field of coating and filler clays for use in paper manufacture. Much of this information has not been included in mining publications and has therefore not been readily available to all in the mineral industry. Recent developments in this field, including spray drying of clays, are presented here. U. S. Bureau of Mines figures for 1952 indicate that the paper industry consumes more than 50 pct of all kaolin produced and sold in the U. S. As most of the kaolin used by the industry comes from Georgia producers, the fraction of their output destined for paper use is thus appreciably higher than 50 pct. Small wonder that the kaolin industry, especially in Georgia, is highly sensitive to the quality requirements of paper mills and must respond promptly to technological developments in paper manufacturing. The paper industry itself is not the ultimate consumer. For the greater portion of the clay the end product is the printed page, and the demands of printing and publishing have sparked some of the technological advances in paper making which have, in turn, brought about methods employed in the kaolin industry. As compared with the product of 20 or 25 years ago, one of the most striking characteristics of the graphic arts today is the mass production of quality printing of fine pictorial work, much of it in full color. During this time periodicals with printing standards close to those of yesterday's slick-paper publications that were printed on a slow schedule and for a limited circulation have grown to the point where they go out to many millions of readers, often at weekly intervals. The complexity of technological improvements brought about by this increased circulation is probably not appreciated even by technical people, unless they have had reasonably close contact with the industry. The advance has come about through developments not only in the art of printing, but also in the field of paper making and even at the level of clay mining and processing. The smoothness required for faithful reproduction of the kind of printed matter under consideration is attained with a clay-coated paper. Since the distribution expense of the publication will depend to a great extent on its weight, the paper used must not be too heavy. This means a lower basis weight than was normal for conventional clay-coated papers some 25 years ago. And for this mass production market it becomes necessary to provide a paper having these and all the other required characteristics at a very moderate price—not the premium price conventional clay-coated papers formerly demanded. This challenge has been met by a new method of producing coated paper. In the past, application of clay coating to paper was a conversion operation, performed separately from the making of the base sheet. The newer development is called machine coating. Here application of the coating is an integral step in a continuous process by which wood pulp, clay, and other ingredients are manufactured into a sheet of coated paper. Many more problems are involved in this procedural change than are apparent at a casual glance. The coating operation, for example, must function at much higher linear speed than could be obtained with coating mechanisms previously employed. The application machinery developed to meet this requirement necessitated changes in composition of the coating color.* This created new requirements, summarized below, for the clay employed as coating pigment. In addition to smoothness, a relatively glossy printing surface is needed, and to a large measure it is the function of the coating clay to make possible the development of both these surface characteristics. Traditionally, pigments such as satin-white, prepared by reacting lime with paper-makers' alum, were used to assist in producing a high finish. However, economic considerations and others preclude large-scale use of such material in the new processes. LOCKE, Cambridge, Mass.-In this country, we have come to think that we should use smaller size of feed in our ball-mills. I will admit that a ball-mill is not comparable to a tube-mill, as conditions may not be the same, but there we have an unusual demonstration of the advantage of a coarser feed. Further investigation along this line is going to lead to some valuable results. The authors have overcome the difficulty of this coarse feed by taking out what I would call the difficult lumps, It is not clear from the paper whether many of these difficult lumps' may not be 'reduced portions of their grinding media. H. W. HARDINGE, New York, N. Y.-The idea is not exactly new because in 1911 they used the miner to reduce the finer material. We proceeded three or four years using many tons, about 15 tons. or nearly the same proportion of ore to grinding medium. Another thing to be taken into account is the hardness of the ore being ground. In South Africa, the transportation costs must be, taken into account. They are also making progress in the method of using tube-mills and ball-mills instead of stamps. Experiments are to be conducted with 10-ft. diameter mills there, with the object of increasing the mass action and agitation which, as has been demonstrated under different circumstances, increases the overall efficiency.

A brief resiclence in Virginia hasenabled me to examine some of its crystalline strata, and a few hints, concerning their correspondence with similar rocks elsewhere, may be of service to those who are studying them. In comparing the crystalline rocks of Virginin and New England, we may first recall the similarity of their geographical position. They constitute a continuous belt, being traceable through the Highlands of New York and yew Jersey, Southeastern Pennsylvania, in the counties of Bucks, Montgomery, Philadelphia, Delaware, and Chester, and Marylund. Thus the Green Mountains of Vermont and the White Mountains of New Hampshire seen] to be topographically continuous with the Blue Ridge and Midland districts of Virginia. This tract of country has been termed the Atlantic area in distinction from the Appalachian territory, whose eastern limit is the great, Lower Silurian limestone valley extending from the St. Lawrence and Champlain valleys to Alabama. The Appalachian formations were studied by the brothers Rogers, forty years since, and found to refit, unconformably upon the western flank of the Blue Ridge, the oldest of the series adjoining the gneisses, followed westerly by the other Palseozoic members in a regular ascending order, to which numercial designations were applied—Number 1 being the Cambrian, Number 2 the Lower Silurian Iimeqtones, etc?. In Vermont the same conclusion Was presented in the State reports: the Green Mountains were said to possess the anticlinal structure, and to underlie the quartzites and limestones. Inasmuch as this Atlantic area is' topgraphically continuous from the Middle to the Northern States, and is unconformably overlaid upon the west side by the same succession of strata, the presumption ii very strong that the history of bath sections has been the same, and that the entire area is of Eozoic age. Cross sections, in both districts, illustrate the existence of gigantic overturns, causing the strata of 'the Appalachian region to dip to wards the Atlantic gneisses. To the beginner it would appearthat tile Silurian group must dip beneath the crystallines, and hence many of the geologists in the beginning of the study of the stratigraphy of this easters border of the continent believed that

The application of evolutionary operation is proposed for the cleaning of coal by the heavy media process. Analysis of the data given suggests some benefits that may not be immediately appreciated unless evolutionary operation is applied. For example, while it may seem obvious to increase specific gravity when the ash and sulfur content of the clean coal is lower than that allowed, evolutionary operation may show that an increase in feed rate or an increase in both feed rate and specific gravity would be a more profitable alternative. In addition, by using evolutionary operation, up-to-date knowledge of the effect of change of feed rate or specific gravity on yield and product quality is available. This information facilitates confidence about decisions made in regard to the day-to-day operation of these units. A number of other applications in the minerals industry are proposed. An application of evolutionary operation in a related field is also given where a large number of variables were required to be optimized.

A university is a place to build minds and develop leaders. It provides the tools necessary for the development of new ideas which come from the inquisitive mind and is one of the stepping stones to management responsibilities for the truly ambitious. However, it is not always a financially sound investment! Lately, there have been several articles published on the economic advantages of a college education. These articles tend to average wages together according to education and years of service. Their tabulations generally include the chairman of the board, various vice presidents and plant managers and do not reflect the achievement of the average graduate. They consistently fail to include an analysis of the investment a college education requires. In reality, the bright high school graduate would make more real money over a 20-year period if he went directly to work "on the hill" than he would if he graduated from college. Furthermore, he would find little difference between his wages and those of the college graduate in the period from 20-30 years after high school graduation.

Are from the Greater Butte Project is hoisted through the new Kelley shaft. In 1946 when plans were formulated for the Kelley mine, two test cave blocks were mined by using the facilities of the old St. Lawrence mine. These blocks, known as the Adams No. 1 and Adams No. 2, produced more than half a million tons of ore. The experiment proved beyond all doubt that cave mining was possible- and economical-in Butte. Adams No. 1 was patterned after Inspiration cave blocks. Adams No. 2 was a slusher type, with the slusher lane on the first floor above the haulage crosscut and at right angles to it. Thirty-horsepower electric hoists slushed ore from 48-in. scraper buckets directly into cars for haulage to the shaft. These cars were the 57-cu ft Granby type hauled by 6-ton battery locomotives over 40-lb, 18-in. gage track. Prior to this time the largest slushing machines used at Butte were 15-hp electric hoists pulling 36-in. scrapers.

IF New England were located in some distant and almost inaccessible region, there is no doubt that its mineral resources would have been ere this well developed and generally acknowledged, but laboring under the disadvantage of nearness, it has been neglected. Its surface, moreover, is not cut up by mountains and canons, and the remnants of many of the old ridges are extensively covered by glacial drift. Having for the past ten months been engaged in the development of a. mineral district in Southeastern Maine, I would take this opportunity to lay before the Institute sketches of results, and try to give some idea of the formations as found. The Sullivan Mining District extends from the town of Franklin, through Hancock, Sullivan, and Gouldsborough, from northwest to southeast, about sixteen miles. A general idea of this locality may be gathered from the map accompanying. (Fig. 1).

When Agassiz and his party of geologists commenced their exploration of the interior of Brazil and the Amazon region, one of the first and, to the last, one of the most novel and striking phenomena which met them everywhere was the great depth of decomposed or partially decayed rock in situ, which mantles, and for the most part conceals, the underlying strata. The same facts strike all geological observers from the North who happen to penetrate the middle and southern latitudes of the Atlantic States. In North Carolina, e. g., the entire middle and western regions, outside of the Quaternary clays, sands, and gravels of the East,—that is, all that portion of the State occupied by the Archæan and Mesozoic rocks,—show everywhere this peculiarity, so new to those accustomed to glaciated surfaces. (written discussion?).- I embrace ace the opportunity to take part in a discussion of Mr. Woodruff's paper because a successful discerning of what actually constitutes pet-roliferous areas from the geologists' standpoint is worthy of our endeavors, not only from the intellectual side, but also because it may lead, as Mr. Woodruff hopes, to the more certain establishment of principles that can be applied to other continents in exploiting them for petroleum. This discussion will also embrace the results of two other recent papers, one by Alexander W. McCoy and one by Maurice G. Mehl.1 Sources of Petroleum.-Mr. Woodruff is agreed that petroleum comes from plants and animals, or possibly from both, and that it has ac-cumulated by migration into reservoir rocks. These reservoir rocks must of course be porous to become catch basins for the oil and gas, and then, too, their present structures are variable, as they occur in anticlines, domes, terraces, etc. , The structures, he states, are more widespread than are the oil pools, and the same is true for the reservoir rocks. THE valuable mineral content of the current feed to the Miami concentrator is as follows: copper, 0.7 pct total; molybdenum, 0.01. Flotation of this ore yields a sulphide concentrate containing: chalcocite, 44 pct; molybdenite, 0.5; pyrite, 50.0; insol, 5.5. A combination of potassium ethyl xanthate and pentasol amyl xanthate as collectors, and pine oil, as frother, are used in this flotation. Rejection of pyrite is encouraged by holding the amount of collectors used to the minimum consistent with copper recovery and by operating at high alkalinity (equivalent to 0.35-0.40 lb CaO per ton solution of pH 11.0).

Until recently, the universal practice in New Zealand was dry-crushing and direct cyaniding. With ores containing no mineral sulphides, and little or no coarse gold, 'this method, in spite of its many disadvantages, gave excellent results, and was by far the best one available, pending the solution of the slimes-problem. But the situation has now been changed. The successful treatment of the slimes, enabling the mines not only to do away with dry-crushing, but also to deal with the mineralized ores of the lower levels, which are, for obvious reasons, quite unsuited to that method of treatment, has made wetcrushing universal; and this may be taken as satisfactory proof of its superiority over the former practice. With some uncertainty as to the type, rate and scope of adoption of air pollution control regulations, and with limited information on the availability of low-sulfur fuels, it is possible at best to make only a rough assessment of the impact of such regulations on coal. It is apparent from the following discussion that regulations of the type already effective or being considered, if adopted and enforced on a widespread basis over a short-term period and if substitute fuels were available, both quantitatively and economically, could result in a loss of more than one-half of coal's markets. Depending on the areal sequence of adoption of such regulations, some areas would be able to obtain limited amounts of low-sulfur coals. Others would not. Because of the usually greater distances from the large industrial coal consuming areas to new sources of coal supply, and because of the higher mine prices for low-sulfur coals, the delivered prices of such coals as might be available would be much higher than those for high-sulfur coals. A large and sudden demand for low-sulfur coals would exert further upward pressure on prices.

Introduction Drilling is the initial operating step In open pit mining. It goes hand-in-hand with the blasting operations to ensure adequately broken material for the excavation equipment employed. The drilling effectiveness is highly dependent on the quality of the drill evaluation. This discussion will center on the parameters that are needed to evaluate drill requirements for a new mine The procedure that is generated can, however, be used to evaluate whether to expand existing operations and replace existing equipment. Methods of breaking ground, other than blasthole drilling and blasting, such as ripping, will not be discussed. The importance of correct drill evaluation extends to the other facets of open pit mining. Inadequate fragmentation, the direct result of poor drilling and blasting techniques, results in oversized, hard digging for the excavating equipment. The result is higher secondary blasting costs, reduced excavation efficiencies, higher excavation costs, higher road repair costs, and higher haulage equipment costs. The main objective of evaluating drill fleet requirements, therefore, is to determine the equipment needed to minimize the operational constraints, caused by blasthole drilling, on other facets of open pit mining at the lowest cash flow costs.

The mathematical problem considered by the author1 can be given another physical interpretation which is of some practical significance. The alternative physical problem involves the approximate behavior of a single well which is producing at a constant rate through an axially symmetric, horizontal fracture of infinite flow capacity which is located at the center, top or bottom of a uniformly thick, horizontal, homogeneous, anisotropic reservoir of infinite lateral extent which contains a single, slightly compressible fluid. Using Coats' asymptotic results, the wellbore pressure in the fractured system is given by the following equation.

The senior author of this paper has expressed the belief that when gamma iron transforms into alpha iron on reaching the A3 point, each gamma grain does not change bodily into one or more alpha grains but that the alpha phase forms first at the boundaries and along the crystallo-graphic planes of the austenite grains.1 To quote: On cooling through the point As, at about 900° C, iron passes from the gamma condition to a new allotropic form generally designated as alpha. This transformation, however, is not instantaneous. There are good reasons for believing that it begins at the grain boundaries and along the octahedral planes of the crystals and that it progresses until each grain of gamma iron is changed into a grain of alpha iron, the resulting structure being similar to that of gamma iron.
