The Tz-Zr system was reinvestigated using both metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. It mas found that titanium and zirconium are soluble in all proportions in both the a and 0 phases. The minimum in the transformation was found at 50 at. pct and 535°C. THE Ti-Zr system has previously been the subject of several investigations.1-6 A study by Hayes et al.5 using magnesium-reduced titanium and zirconium melted in graphite crucibles indicated that the system was a continuous series of solid solutions in both a and 0 phases with a minimum at approximately 545°C and 65 pct* Zr. These conclusions were substantiated by the work of Duwez4 as well as by the limited data of Craighead et al.,3 Fast,2 and deBoer.1 However, a more recent investigation of the titanium-rich region by Ence and Margolin6 indicated that the solubility of zirconium in a, titanium at 500°C is approximately 22 pct with the a + 0 field extending to approximately 47 pct Zr. Therefore in order to resolve this discrepancy the following investigation was initiated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The alloys used in this investigation were prepared as 20- to 30-g buttons by nonconsumable electrode melting in a helium atmosphere. The starting materials were Bureau of Mines titanium BHN 71 and Foot Mineral iodide crystal bar zirconium. The titanium was premelted before the alloys were prepared to avoid excessive weight losses in the final melting. The compositions of the alloys prepared were as follows: Ti-12.0, 22.2, 29.0, 39.6, 50.0, 58.0, 72.4, 83.5. and 90.8 pct Zr. Prior to heat treatment the alloys were cold-worked 10 to 20 pct, stopping at the first signs of cracking. Specimens for heat treatment were wrapped in molybdenum sheet and annealed in argon-filled quartz capsules for the following times and temperatures: 750°C-40 days, 675°C-61 days, 600°C—109 days, 575°C-112 days, 550°C-112 days, 525°C—127 days, and 450°C —153 days. Quenching was accomplished by breaking the capsules in an iced-brine solution. The standard techniques used for polishing the specimens involved belt grinding, grinding on emery paper, polishing electrolytically, and etching with Remington "A" etch7 or "R" etch 8 Debye-Scherrer X-ray powder photograms were obtained for a number of samples using a 114.6-mm camera and CuK, radiation. Exposure times were from 19 to 23 hr. The powder samples were obtained by filing to 270 mesh size. After filing the samples were wrapped in molybdenum foil capsuled in quartz and reannealed at the temperature of original heat treatments; following the heat treatment the samples were quenched into iced brine without breaking the capsules. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS On the basis of the microstructural examinations of the heat-treated samples and of the X-ray diffraction data, the Ti-Zr system shown in Fig. 1 was constructed. The data indicate that a, and 0 titanium form a complete series of solid solutions with a, and ß zirconium. The minimum was found to occur at 65 pct (50 at. pct) Zr and 535°C, in excellent agreement with the earlier investigations,1-5 see Fig. 2. Typical microstructures are shown in Figs. 3 to 7. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 show the 22.2, 39.6, and 50.0 pct Zr alloys after heat treatment at 675°C for 61 days with the 22.2 pct Zr showing equiaxed a, and the 39.6 pct Zr alloy a + transformed ß, while the 50 pct Zr alloy shows only transformed B. Figs. 6 and 7 show the 29.0 and 39.6 pct Zr alloys after heat treatment for 109 days at 600°C. The 29 pct Zr alloy has an equiaxed a structure while the 39.6 pct alloy has a partially recrystallized a+ß structure. X-ray diffraction data obtained from the 50 pct Zr alloys after heat treatment at 525° and 450°C as well as from the as-cold-rolled material showed only those lineos which couid be indexed a: a titanium, good agreement with the previously published values. 2,4,5,9 Chemical analysis* of the 50 pct Zr alloy

Fifteen and 18 pct Ni maraging steel and several binavy and ternary alloys of the iron-rich corner of the Fe-Co-Ni system have been studied. After annealing in the austenite range, these alloys were deformed slightly by cold rolling and subsequently aged. Compavison of experimental measurements at various processing stages indicates that small degrees of deforn~ation (5 to 10 pct reduction in thickness) do not influence hardness and strength or the aging kinetics. Electrical resistivity and ductility are somewhat redu]ced and the coercive force is substantially lower when compared to identical samples which were not deformed. The results are explained in terms of retained austenite which transforms into martensite with the small amount of deformation. RECENTLY there has been increasing interest in maraging steel for applications in electric power generators requiring a high ratio of power to weight.' Fifteen pct Ni maraging steel has been investigated to evaluate its properties and performance for application as high-strength magnetic rotor steel,' and a thorough investigation of the precipitation and transformation processes in this alloy has been conducted in this laboratory.3 The influence of deformation, which preceded the aging treatment, was also studied. It was found that a small deformation in the order of 5 pct has a rather striking effect in reducing the coercive force. Other interesting effects on the properties caused by such deformation have led to the more detailed studies reported herein. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The methods used to produce the samples from 15 pct Ni maraging steel have been described elsewhere.3 The general procedure of hot forging and cold rolling to sheet has been followed. The composition is included in Table I which also contains the composition of the 18 pct Ni maraging steel grade 250 studied. More data about the material and the processing of the 18 pct Ni maraging steel have been recently reported.4 The experimental alloys of binary and ternary Fe-Ni-Co alloys were made by levitation melting in an argon atmosphere and casting into rod-shaped ingots 7 mm thick weighing 20 g. From these ingots 25-mm-long rods were machined to study the phase transformation by a dilatometer. These rods were then cold-rolled to strips, 2.4 mm thick. Annealing for austenitizing was done in tube furnaces in an argon or helium atmosphere followed by cooling in the water-cooled portion of the tube. Aging was done in a salt bath containing a neutral blend of Alkali nitrates and nitrites. Vickers hardness was measured using a load of 50 kg for 15 sec. Tensile tests were carried out on a hard beam tensile tester at a strain rate of 5 X lo-' per sec using flat samples with a gage length of 37.5 mm and a cross section of 1.25 by 6.25 mm. Estimated sensitivity was 5 K x strain and 0.35 kg per sq mm stress. Magnetic saturation was determined on small cylindrical samples, 2.5 mm in length and diameter, by measuring the force exerted by the gradient of a magnetic field of 1000 oe per cm in a mean field of 11,500 oe. The measured values could be reproduced within *1 pct. Coercive force was measured by a precision-type magnetic field probe in a magnetic coil as described by Foerster.5 The magnetizing field was 1300 oe. The samples were 5 cm long, 1 cm wide, and 2.4 mm thick. he coercive force was measured to within +0.1 oe. Electrical resistivity was measured by using a potentiometer on flat strips with a gage length of 100 mm and a cross section of 2.5 by 0.5 mm. The accuracy of the measurement was 0.1 pct but the reproducibility of the measured specific resistivity among different samples was in the order of 1 pct. The method used to prepare the samples for electron transmission has been reported elsewhere.3 RESULTS Fig. 1 shows the influence of deformation after annealing on the resistivity, hardness, and coercivity. R. F. Dornagala and D. J. McPherson (Armour Research Foundation, Chicago)—I should like to compliment the authors for a workmanlike job in determining the partial phase diagram of a system comprised of two rnetals which are certainly not easy to work with. We are completing work at Armour Research Foundation on an Atomic Energy Commission-sponsored project for the determination of eight zirconium binary diagrams. Work on the Zr-Cr system has been completed and should be published within the next year. For our work, Westinghouse Grade 3 iodide crystal bar served as the zirconium melting stock. Johnson-Matthey, electrolytic chromium, specially treated for oxygen removal, was employed. The overall constitution of the system determined at Armour Research Foundation is in very good agreement with the present work. We found a eutectic at 18 pct Cr and 1280 °C, somewhat lower than the value reported. This temperature was confirmed by thermal analysis, incipient melting studies, and regular isothermal anneals. The eutectoid was located close to 1 pct Cr and 835°C by metallographic analysis of annealed specimens. Maximum solubility of chromium in /S zirconium was 4.5 pct at the eutectic temperature. Chromium solubility in a zirconium was less than 0.28 pct at all temperatures. We found the compound at 53 pct to melt around 1700°C, with an open maximum, but determined its crystal structure to be hexagonal close-packed (MgZn, type). The lattice parameters were in excellent agreement with those determined by Wallbaum in 1942. The diagrams are in substantial agreement, and .part of the differences are undoubtedly due to the use of different zirconium melting stock. M. K. McQuillan (Birmingham, England)—I read this paper with a great deal of interest, as it covered the same field as some work of my own.' There are a number of points in the present paper on which I would like to comment. First, I should say that I, too, used zirconium prepared by magnesium reduction of the tetrachloride and electrolytically prepared chromium, and melted the alloys in a Kroll-type arc furnace. The purity of my alloys should, therefore, be comparable with the purity of those of the present authors, and any differences in our observations would not be expected to be attributable to this cause. The differences between my observations and theirs concern the presence of the eutectic, the temperature of the eutectoid, and the melting point of the compound. I would be very much interested in any further evidence the authors may have for the occurrence of the eutectic at 1380°C. During the course of my work I noted that a number of my alloys containing 60 to 90 pct Zr melted at about 1400 °C, and for a time assumed that a eutectic occurred at this temperature as described in the paper. On further investigation, however, I found that the structures of the as-melted alloys could not be made to fit in with this interpretation of the system. If a eutectic exists in this region of the system it would be expected that the as-melted alloys would show the usual type of cast structure, i.e., dendrites of the compound plus eutectic. This, however, does not occur, as may be seen from Fig. 9. The compound seen there is not dendritic in form, and the remaining material is by no means certainly eutectic. It may be argued that a compound such as ZrCrl would not form dendrites but would tend to crystallize in geometric shapes. In this case, however, I have evidence to the contrary, as on the chromium side of the compound, where a eutectic occurs at about 1545"C, the compound formed from the liquid takes on a conventional dendritic form, and the eutectic is observed in the interdendritic spaces in the usual way. There is no reason to suppose that the compound would behave differently in an alloy lying on the zirconium side of the compound composition if a eutectic existed there too.

Electrical resistivity variation with temperature was measured on a series of alloys containting up to 33 at. pct of oxygen over the range 77° to1500°K. The resistivity behavior is highly anomalous and itzconsistent with simple metallic conduction. Both composition and temperature-depended resistivity singularities were observed. A few experiments carried out on Ti-N and Zr-O alloys indicate the presence of similar anomalies. These observations, together with the published data on effects of substi-tutional alloying on the resistiuity of titanium, suggest that the anomalies are inhevent in the electron structure of this group oj metals. The existence of two-band conduction, and a significant shift of bands relative to each other with temperature and/or the electron concentration are suggested. CONSIDERABLE advances have been made in recent years in the alloy theory of simple metals. Very little, however, is known about the bonding in transition metals and their alloys.&apos; Titanium, with its relatively few electrons, may be expected to show simpler alloying behavior than the more complex transition elements. Its alloys with the interstitial elements appear particularly attractive in an investigation of bonding characteristics because of a) the simple nature of the solute elements, b) the remarkable similarity between the equiatomic structures Tic, TiN, and TiO, and c) the extensive solid solubility ranges of oxygen and nitrogen in a titanium reported.2,3 The Ti-O system was chosen for the most extensive investigation because of the relative ease of preparation of suitable specimens. Since the main object of the work was to obtain data on the bonding and its changes on alloying, electron-sensitive properties were primarily investigated. The present work describes the investigation on the electrical resistivity-temperature-oxygen content relationships. A few experiments were also carried out at selected compositions in the Ti-N and Zr-O systems. EXPERIMENTAL Materials and Method. Polycrystalline specimens were prepared in the form of hairpin strips some 50 by 5 by 0.15 to 0.50 mm by direct metal-gas reaction. This was carried out by controlled oxidation followed by a homogenizing anneal at a higher temperature. All the test specimens were fully homogenized as judged from the uniform microstructure and microhardness. To avoid preferred orientation, each strip specimen was annealed in the ß range prior to the oxidation, this procedure assuring random orientation in the strip;4 hence any texture resulting from the oxidation reaction itself affected all the specimens to a similar extent. Titanium used was of high purity (66 DPN, 10 Kg load; major impurities 0,-43G ppm, N,-70 ppm, C-25 ppm, Fe-14G ppm). The solute content of the alloys was determined by weighing, after the reaction with a known amount of oxygen. The specimens in which the discrepancy between the volumetric and gravimetric measurements exceeded 2 pct (or 0.2 mg for the low oxygen alloys) were rejected. The mean between the two measurements was then taken as the oxygen content of the alloy. Check analyses showed no measurable nitrogen contamination. All oxygen contents are given in atomic percent. Zr-O alloys were prepared in identical manner from hafnium-free crystal bar metal, cold-rolled to strip 0.25 mm thick. Ti-N alloys required very long reaction times at the maximum temperature available (1250°C). In order, therefore, to detect possible oxygen contamination, duplicate specimens were reacted in every experimental run, and one of these was analyzed both for oxygen (vacuum fusion) and for nitrogen (Kjeldahl). Only the specimens in which the check analysis showed < 1000 ppm O were then used for resistivity investigation. Since only relatively high nitrogen alloys (7.1 at. pct; i.e., 2 wt pct N,) were investigated, this oxygen contamination was considered permissible. Dc resistance was measured by the four-probe method as previously described.= The temperature was determined with a calibrated thermocouple placed in the center of the specimen hairpin. The errors in the specimen resistance values thus obtained were estimated at 1 pct due almost exclusively to the finite thickness of the potential wires and the consequent uncertainty as regards the true resistance length of the specimen. ROGERS*—The conclusions drawn in this paper have important practical significance to the steelmaker and the metallurgist if, in practice, it is demonstrated that metallic copper in the charge will pick up sulphur from the furnace atmosphere and thus increase the sulphur content of the bath. The problem of residual copper arising out of increasing copper in the scrap available to the industry is, in itself, a matter of concern to the steel maker. If, in addition to the often detrimental effects of high residual copper upon the physical properties of some important steel grades, there is to be a complication of the sulphur problem, then we have a set of conditions that bodes no good for the open hearth melter and the open hearth metallurgist. THE Berlin gold quartz mine is situated in Nye county, Nevada, on the west flank of the Shoshone range, about 40 miles south and 30 miles west from the town of Austin, the county-seat of Lander county. The distance from Austin is about 60 miles by stage-road. The outcrop of the vein, at the top of the incline-shaft, is situated just at the base of the mountain proper, almost exactly at the intersection of the mountain-side with the gravelly bench that slopes for about three-quarters of a mile to the flatter sage-brush plain, or desert valley, below. The -vein itself consists almost entirely of quartz, with perhaps 2 per cent. of sulphide of iron, copper, lead, zinc and antimony, and perhaps a trace of some of the compounds of tellurium with gold and silver, although none of the latter have been as yet positively identified. The relative proportion, by weight, of silver and gold in the ores, varies in different parts of the vein, from 12 silver for 1 of gold, to 7 silver for 1 of gold. The quartz vein-filling is usually frozen fast to the walls, and is very hard and compact, seldom showing the friable, fissured, or shelly structure often to be found in quartz veins. Comparatively little evidence of relative motion of one wall of the vein upon the other is to be found-a fact indicating that during the formation of the vein, and prior to the extensive movements herein described, little disturbance had taken place. No evidence whatever of metasomatic origin has been observed. On the other hand, occasional occurrences of comby structure, in which the axes of the quartz crystals are at right angles to the plane of the vein, rather indicate deposition from solution in a pre-existing fissure. The following paper, submitted by the Russian petroleum authorities, was secured through the courtesy of G. V. Ackerman, Vice President of Amtorg Trading Corporation, and N. V. Vannikoff, Representative in the U.S.A. of the United Oil and Gas Industries of the U.S.S.R. It gives an excellent view of the Russian petroleum industry as seen through Russian eyes. Noteworthy is the tremendous area over which the Russians are searching for petroleum, for this paper refers to such far-flung areas as the Arctic Tamir Peninsula, Kamchatka and Sakhalin on the Pacific, Lake Baikal in Central Siberia, the great new discovery at Neftadag in the plains of West Turkestan, and the oil of the Ferghana oasis, where the derricks look out over to the mosques of Kokand. Of interest also is the new pipe line to supply the industrial centers of Ukraine grouped around the great hydroelectric plant built at Dneprotroy on the falls of the Dnieper. The technical achievements have been noteworthy and we must pause to consider the scope of the undertakings being carried forward. Russia is at the worst a good second to the United States in petroleum reserves and for a long time to come will be a most important factor in the petroleum markets of the world. Her story should be of interest to everyone in the industry. The First Five Year Plan The first Five Year Plan, covering the period 1928-29 to 1932, accomplished the task of transforming the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from an agricultural, backward land into a powerful independent industrial country, with an advanced technological foundation of its own for finally achieving the social reconstruction of the entire national economy. Along with the gigantic forward &apos;strides in industry and transportation, radical changes took place in agriculture. The creation of more than 5000 great state farms and of more than 200,000 collective farms serviced by a widespread network of machine-tractor stations has brought the U.S.S.R. to the fore as the largest agricultural country in the world. Imports of tractors and other agricultural machinery in the initial years of the Five Year Plan and the intensive output of this equipment by the great plants of the U.S.S.R. in the latter years of the plan have brought about the mechanization of agriculture in the Soviet Union. DEFINITION THE term lightweight aggregate implies material which may be substituted for the usual rock, sand and gravel commonly used as the major part of concrete, but distinguished by being much lighter in weight. BACKGROUND The art of making and using concrete is old and well developed. Research and experience have pretty well determined the qualities necessary in its constituents, and time has tested theories and applications. Elaborate specifications and tests have been devised and generally adopted governing all phases of concrete work, from selection of material, through engineering design and down to mixing and placing. Standard practices have become routine to executives and laborers, and operations have been simplified and costs lowered. Though many lightweight aggregates meet the basic specifications necessary for usefulness, their physical qualities are so different that they frequently will not pass standard tests, and some of them cannot be mixed and placed with the usual formulas for water and slump. As a rule their use produces a concrete with a lower modulus of elasticity which requires design change, and being produced in much smaller quantities than ordinary aggregate, production costs are higher. This latter works in a vicious circle to restrict their use and maintain prices that are not competitive, except as against each other. INCREASED DEMAND In spite of such handicaps consumption has grown steadily for the past two decades and is apparently growing even faster today. It is evident that lightweight concrete must have better qualities, and be sufficiently better to overcome the higher cost and the other difficulties and disadvantages pertinent to the use of a new and different material in an old industry. Hence the study of its main ingredient should be of interest to all engineers. Our group has a double interest in the subject since most of the materials which have been used as sources of lightweight aggregate are either mined, or are by-products of mining operations. We are directly interested in their production as well as their use, and since available supplies of materials suitable are limited, the increasing use, and rising demand, make the discovery of new sources, or the development of processes to adapt other natural materials to this use, a promising field; and one in which our profession should take an active part. RECENT DEVELOPMENT Descriptions of ancient work contain references to the use of spalls of tuffs or pumice in concrete masonry, but it is only since the nineteen twenties that serious attempts have been made to produce and market lightweight aggregates. This paper discusses the major portion of the hoist (drag or crowd) system and it shows how static control accomplishes its major aims. In 1959, the first truly static control for Ward-Leonard equipped electric excavators was designed, developed and placed in service. The control system, originally intended only as a more modern electronic type of alternate to the proven rotating amplifier control system has since proven to be much more. When they conceived the original system, the designers had much more in mind than simply replacing the rotating amplifier with one that had no moving parts. The long range plan, which started with the initial system consisting of an SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) preamplifier and magnetic amplifier power amplifier, called for eventually, a control system low in cost and maintenance, relatively simple in design and extremely reliable. The plan also included the elimination of as many of the shortcomings of the rotating system as possible. No small accomplishment, when it is considered that the rotating control system had been, with only minor modifications, the standard of the industry for 20 years. The final step in the original design plan called for the eventual development of an amplifier that could be used as one of the basic building blocks of the future. DEVELOPMENT RESULTS Since the successful unveiling of the first static control system, continuous development has resulted in a slow, but sure progression along the path described by the original plan. The first version of the new control corrected one of the shortcomings of the rotating system by removing the necessity of operator anticipation. This was accomplished by making the system faster in response so that the operator noticed virtually no delay between his movement of the master controller and that of the machine. Thus, after the operator became familiar with the operating characteristics of the machine, he was able to become more relaxed while digging. The natural result of this accomplishment was higher production. All of the subsequent versions of this new control were even faster than the initial design. Although it was not distinguishable by the operator, the further increase in response resulted in large gains in the limiting of transient torque peaks applied to the machine while digging. Also, a more effective control of the torque and power peaks was obtained when plugging the motion being controlled to a stop. IN anticipation of a shortage of labor for hand-tram-ming at the Cliffs shaft mine of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Ishpeming, Mich., early in 1923 three 4-ton Goodman storage-battery locomotives, equipped with Edison batteries, were purchased. Storage-battery locomotives were chosen for this work because the expense and time required to put up trolley-wire and to bond the rails of the complicated system of tracks on the levels, where the locomotives were to be used, would not have been warranted by the amount of ,ore to be handled. The only changes in the tracks necessary for storage-battery locomotives were new switches and extra ties and braces on curves. The tracks were 24-in. gage, and were laid with 20-lb. rail. Edison batteries were chosen, because it was desired to charge the batteries from the trolley circuit already, in the mine, and this would have been impracticable with lead batteries. Each locomotive is equipped with 126 A-4 Edison cells, which are charged in series from the 240-volt trolley circuit while the trolley locomotives are running; and are discharged in parallel in two banks of 63 cells each. These locomotives were so successful that later 5 smaller locomotives, weighing 11/2 tons each, were pur-chased for use e with cars that are filled by hand and on levels where the amount of ore handled is small. These locomotives, built by the Geo. D. Whitcomb Co. of Rochelle, Ill., are equipped with batteries of 40 A-4 Edison cells each, the cells being the same as those, on the larger locomotives. They are charged from mer-curial-are rectifiers. These locomotives are operated by the trammers themselves, and have not special oper-ators like the larger machines. The trammers are all young men of American birth, and take quickly to the operation of machinery, and the simplicity of the con-trol on these locomotives has made special training unnecessary. A survey of the results was made by the A. C. Nielsen So., an excerpt from which follows: Eight Edison-equipped battery locomotives are now in use at an Ishpeming mine of the Cleveland-. Cliffs Iron Co. This equipment was installed to take the place of men who formerly pushed loaded cars by hand. Results have been very satisfactory and the de-pendable, trouble-free operation of the Edison batteries is considered to have been an important factor in the effectiveness of the new hauling method.

Exploration activities were maintained at a high level throughout 1966. Numerous significant discoveries and developments in which geologists played an important part were announced. Although the complete results of exploration activities carried out during the year by private companies have not been announced, the following are among the more important developments that have been made public knowledge. In the western states, exploration for practically all of the metals continued at a high rate. Substantially increased interest in uranium occurred this year, and it is felt by many that a real boom in the demand for uranium may come about in the near future. The reasons have been the more rapid acceptance of atomic power than had been anticipated, and that uranium producers can now sell their product to private interests and even foreign countries. A tremendous demand for uranium is anticipated by many, and this has rekindled exploration activity. On the Colorado Plateau, in Wyoming, and in the area around Grants, N. M., a number of companies have undertaken uranium exploration programs, among which are Kerr-McGee, Homestake, Anaconda and Utah Construction. A new uranium orebody in Texas was brought into production early in 1966 by Susquehanna Western.

Two methods for the rapid valuation of oil properties are in common use. The one best known and most widely used is the "per barrel" value, based on the present daily production of the well, without regard to its past performance or the history of the sand or pool from which it produces. The second method is the "time to pay out," or the lengt of time required for a well to place itself upon the credit side of the ledger, from which time the returns from its production (less the operating expenses) will be clear profit. The time basis for valuation is also commonly used in the appraisal of an undeveloped lease. In most oil fields, it is not thought good business to invest in production that will not pay out in at least 4 to 5 years. Nearly all buyers (except in certain regions of very persistent production like the deep-sand territory of the Appalachian field) expect wells to pay out in considerably less time than this. Like the barrel-per-day price, the time necessary for a well to pay out has been determined for each field, so that one frequently hears a field or district referred to as having a certain time to pay out. This is considered the norm for that field or district and the buyer and seller base their value, to greater or less extent, on their belief in the accuracy of this time. The writer long ago became convinced of the inaccuracy of the barrel-per-day method, except when greatly modified for local conditions, such as the age of the wells, their economic limit, operating conditions in the field, the future price of oil, and the persistence of the sand as a producer. When so modified, this method becomes more of an analytic or predicted probable-yield valuation. While the appraiser may not go through each step in a valuation based on future returnable revenue, his knowledge of the field and the local conditions surrounding his leases make it possible for him to estimate a fair sales value that, in many cases, will be a close approximation to the truth. It seems a common opinion among metallographists that all light-gray inclusions seen with the microscope in polished sections of steel are manganese sulphide. Examples of this belief are continually appearing, as for instance in the paper by Dr. Henry Fay on manganese sulphide as a source of danger in steel railsll and in Lieutenant-Commander Cook&apos;s paper on Metallography of Steel for U. S. Naval Ordnance.² Slate- colored inclusions are considered to be silicates, and dove-gray inclusions, manganese sulphide. To show the danger in the latter unqualified assumption, it should be sufficient to examine the edge of any piece of steel that is covered with a fairly thick scale, and that has been polished in such a way as to prevent the scale from breaking away entirely below the polished surface. This paper presents an evaluation of compressibility factor data and a discussion of their application to the estimation of gas reserves. A correlation is presented which provides compressibility factors for use in both two-phase and single-phase hydrocarbon systems. Accuracies comparable to those obtained previously for single-phase systems only can be expected. A simple means of predicting the presence or absence of a liquid phase in a condensate system of known composition is illustrated. The correlation is based on 1,030 compressibility determinations from 21 hydrocarbon samples taken from eight oil fields. Of the data used, 75 per cent were from California, 15 per cent were from the Mid-Continent area, and 10 per cent were from South America. The average numerical deviation of the experimental data from this compressibility chart is 1.22 per cent. Charts and tables are included and discussed which illustrate the errors involved through the misuse or nonuse of compressibility factors in estimates of gas-in-place. INTRODUCTION The compressibility factor is a coefficient which expresses the deviation of a gas of given composition from the Perfect Gas Laws. A factor such as this is necessary in any calculation involving volumes of gaseous mixtures, and finds extensive application in the estimation of natural gas and condensate reserves. It is used in the decline curve, the volumetric, and the material balance methods of gas reserves estimation. The behavior of gases at high pressures has been investigated extensively in recent years and considerable data have been assembled on the compressibility characteristics of a number of gases. Notable among the investigators of high pressure gas relationships are Kvalnes and Caddya, Kay" Sage and Laceys, and Brown, Standing" and Katz4. Other contributors are Smith and Watson, Roland and Kaveler&apos;, and Stevens and Vance". The data on compressibility factors assembled by these investigators have been presented and correlated in numerous ways; particularly noteworthy is the method first presented by Kay5 which relates compressibility factor "Z" to pseudo-reduced temperature and Pseudo-reduced pressure. Other investigators have used this empirical relationship successfully and numerous charts covering a large number of gases have been constructed on this basis. It is the purpose of this paper to evaluate compressibility factor data and to illustrate the importance of their proper use in the estimation of gas-in-place for both gas and condensate reservoirs. EVALUATION OF COMPRESSIBILITY FACTOR DATA The compressibility chart presented by Standing, Katz, Brown and Holcomb in 1941 is probably the most recent and reliable chart for natural gases. The reliability of the Katz chart has been investigated by the writers for a fairly large number of gases (single-phase) in the pressure range from 500 to 10,000 psia and temperature range from 80 to 400°F. A summary of this comparison is presented in Table I. The numerical average deviation of the chart compressibility factors from the experimental compressibility factors is 1.05 per cent, and the algebraic deviation is -0.28 per cent. The Katz correlation appears to be quite accurate for single-phase hydrocarbon systems. It was based on single-phase systems and does not necessarily provide a means of accurately predicting the behavior of two-phase systems which might be encountered in condensate work. Data published recently by Sage and Oldsl&apos; have enlarged the knowledge of phase behavior in condensate systems by covering extensively the Compressibilities of systems in the two-phase as well as single-phase regions for a wide range of temperatures, pressures and gas-oil ratios. An evaluation of these data indicates that conditions can arise, especially in condensate systems having fairly low gas-oil ratios, in which two phases occur and the usual gaseous compressibility factors do not accurately apply. The measured PVT data of Sage and Olds covering two-phase systems have been correlated with additional such data from the Mid-Continent area and South America; these are presented in Fig. 1. Mr. Shaw&apos;s work showed the dodecyl mercaptan as a very good collector compared with other collectors on Cu-Mo ores, Mo ores, and for Au and Au-Ag ores plus Pt ores. However, as one who has had extensive experience on Cu-Mo ores, the work is not complete in making only a rougher concentrate with a collector; the work must be carried on in making a Cu-Mo separation. Did Mr. Shaw do any of this work? Before trying the dodecyl mercaptan as a Cu-Mo collector for the Cu-Mo ore it would be well to have any new work conducted knowing how the reagent acts on the Mo. Will it allow a good separation? The use of the collector at Palabora was also mentioned. From some earlier literature I thought that the reagent has been used as an oxide Cu collector after the sulfide mineral was floated out. I thought the pH at this point was about 1.5-3.0. I would like to have this point clarified.
