HIGH rock and surface temperatures combined H with small deep shafts create a difficult ventilation problem. At the Magma operation in Superior, Ariz., booster fans take air off the bottom levels, directing it first through cooling coils and then through the working places and out to the exhaust shafts. All air drawn from the intake shafts below the 3400 level is cooled before it goes to the stoping areas. Most of the ore mined at Magma has come from steep-dipping vein deposits developed for a maximum distance of 9000 ft along the strike of the vein. At present approximately one third of the tonnage is coming from a new section of the mine where the ore occurs as replacement deposits along a favorable horizon in limestone beds. The deepest mining level is now the 4800.

Geological study of the Prony Nilaterite (New Caledonia) began in 1969 and included drilling, geological mapping and laboratory studies. The deposit is the product of weathering of basic rocks. From top to bottom, the following zones can be distinguished: a compact ferruginous cover; ore associated with yellow laterite, containing 1.0-1.5% Ni and low in impurities (SiO2, Mg); an intermediate silicated ore containing 1.3-2.0% Ni and higher percentages of impurities; garnierite ore much richer in nickel (2-4%) but high in SiO, and Mg contents (Mg up to 20%) ; and parent rock, largely peridotites. Distinction between types of ore is essential because the high grade ore (silicated and granierites) is penalized for its high Mg contents that demand additional acid treatment. All studies made distinguish two types of ore, laterite and silicated.

THE nature of a collector-coated mineral surface has been the subject of some experimentation and much speculation. Various aspects of the problem have been isolated and studied; it is probable, however, that there exist aspects as yet unrecognized, which are needed for a complete description of the system. The recognized elements of the problem are: 1-The nature of the chemical units comprising the film and the nature of the forces holding these chemical units to the mineral surface; 2-The orientation of the chemical units at the surface; and 3-The disposition of the collector units at the mineral surface. This report touches upon all three aspects of the broad problem; it deals, however, with a new and heretofore unrecognized element-the mobility of the collector units in the two dimensions of the solid-liquid interface.

This year the metal mining industry is in for some difficult decisions as the nation struggles to control inflationary pressures resulting from higher production costs and a money-squeeze policy. Re- clouding these problems will be campaign oratory as Congress seeks reelection. Charges will be hurled back and forth between a Republican White House and a Democratic Congress. Inflation and Vietnam will be the big one. Hut pollution i. coming on strong. President Nixon has formed a new Council on Environmental Quality although he already had named a similar unit within his Cabinet six months ago. Both are charged with bringing 1.0 bear all of the Federal Government's talents on the focal points of antipollution measures The biggest task will be to find out how many different "units" are currently mixed up in these efforts.

Discussion of the paper of F. C. NEWTON, presented at the New York meeting, Feb-ruary, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 473 to 477. H. 0. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.-The results of these large-scale experiments, which were carried on at Perth Amboy, show that there are many differences between theoretical conceptions and their applications to work on a large scale. The author has given reasons why the results of bringing a desilverizing kettle to the high melting point of the zinc-silver alloy, Zn3Ag2, melting at 665° C., are not satisfactory. In all probability the alloy is dissolved in the lead; it may also be decomposed by the lead; the practical result is that this high temperature does not work. It remains now for the laboratory man to carry on systematic experiments

Pumping solids through a pipeline is not new but until very recently other means of transportation were cheaper. Many proposed pipelines for transporting solids, while technically feasible, have not been attractive enough to warrant the financial risk involved. In some instances, the difference in transportation cost was negligible. In others, the threat of pipeline competition resulted in a slashing of rates on existing transportation to the point where a pipeline could no longer be justified. In others, a competitive product was cheaper. FIRST IN PLACERS The earliest record of solids being transported in a pipe was in the late 1850s in California placer mines. Water under pressure was used to force gold-bearing gravel up through a pipe, from 30 to as much as 55 ft, to a point where it could be discharged into a flume or sluice.

In the dry regions of the globe many silver-deposits display certain remarkable features, which at the same time are so totally unlike anything met with among ore-bodies elsewhere that they hare long presented exceptional dificulties, not only to a satisfactory explanation of their origin, but to economical milling. A most striking peculiarity of these ores is the haloid character of many of their bonanzas. To this fact more than to any other may be ascribed most of the unusual uncertainties of mining-operations in desert countries—the marvelous local richness of the ores under certain conditions and the often abrupt transition to utter poverty; the inadequacy of ordinary prospecting customs and the constant devising of new exploratory methods; the unaccountable losses in smelting and the continual change in treatment-practice. For these anomalies certain climatic conditions seem to be chiefly responsible.

Investigators in the field of temperature measurement have long sought a thermoelectric couple fulfilling the following requirements: 1. It should be useful up to and including high industrial temperatures; i. e., 1000 to 1800 C. 2. Its thermoelectric variation with temperature should be linear and be maintained after heating to high temperatures for long periods of time. 3. It should be reproducible; i. e., different couples of the same elements should have similar calibration curves. 4. Its thermoelectric power should be large so as to allow the industrial use of rugged recording instruments. 5. Chemical reactions with, and physical changes within the elements of the couple should not alter its calibration. No thermocouple proposed to date exhibits simultaneously all of these characteristics, whereas the couple about to be described fulfills all requirements to a satisfactory degree. New Thermoelectric Materials A thorough survey of the literature on thermoelectricity revealed that present-day thermocouples could not meet the specifications mentioned above because their thermoelements are metallic. Metals have a marked tendency to deteriorate chemically and their melting points limit their use to low temperatures. Refractory substances, however, are usually resistant to chemical attack and are quite stable at high temperatures. Hence a survey of refractory substances having thermoelectric possibilities was made. One class of thermocouples considered was that in which carbon and a carbide of some metal or nonmetal were the thermoelements. Previous investigators neglected to study this field but certain recommendations were made by them for the use of couples in which carbon served as one element. These proposals are listed in Table 1. The couples suggested are unsatisfactory because of their low thermoelectric powers, the low melting points of their metallic elements, etc. The

THE Cartersville mining district, 35 miles northwest of Atlanta, Ga., has been of varying but continuous importance in the southern mineral industry during the past century. Noted chiefly for its production of brown iron ore, manganese oxide ores, barite, sienna, and magnesian limestone, the district and its environs have produced brick and tile clays, slate, gold, bauxite, and graphitic schist. Minor deposits of serpentine, sericite schist, copper ore, and red iron oxide have been prospected. The obvious deposits of brown iron ore, together with some associated specular hematite, were mined out years ago, although a little ore was left in the workings. Moderately steady production of sienna reached a peak about 1930, then declined rapidly. Manganese mining passed through a relatively active period from the World War to 1931, but has subsided to a small but rather constant output for the Birmingham market. How-ever, the White Manganese Corporation has prepared for possible increased production by constructing a new washer capable of handling about 300 tons of ore per day. Principal activity in the district proper has centered for some years in the production of barite and magne-sian limestone.

Talc, when it can be isolated as a pure mineral, has a composition of 63.36% Si02, 31.89% MgO, and 4.75% H20. However, as an industrial commodity, talc rarely approaches theoretical purity. Nevertheless, the impure talc products of commerce find a multitude of uses and few substitutes in many industrial applications. Minerals commonly associated with and sold together in talcose mixtures are tremolite, chlorite, dolomite, mica, and magnesite. Steatite was originally a mineralogical name applied to pure talc. In today's commerce steatite generally refers to the massive variety of talc suitable for electrical insulator manufacture. Block steatite ore can be machined into various shapes. Impure varieties of massive or block talc are still commonly referred to as soapstone. Soft massive talc, suitable for crayon manufacture, has been referred to as French chalk. It has been common practice to discuss talc, soapstone, and pyrophyllite under the same general heading. In the case of soapstone and talc, this is a natural thing since many different types of platy, soft minerals exhibiting a high degree of lubricity (commonly referred to as "slip") have been grouped together and called soapstone or talc. Further, there is a mineralogical relationship of pyrophyllite to montmorillonite and talc to hectorite. Thus, talc and pyrophyllite are sometimes referred to as clay minerals. When finely divided talc or pyrophyllite are combined with water in proportions to make a slurry, the end product does have the appearance of a clay-water mixture. Soapstone for utensils and ornaments was mined by prehistoric Indians on Santa Catalina Island, CA. In the mid-1800s, soapstone from deposits along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains was used by white settlers for building and ornamental stone and in the linings and foundations of furnaces (Anon. 1956). Previous to 1916, the annual recorded production in California did not exceed 2000 tons. In the period 1912 to 1918, output rose sharply when the Talc City, Western, and Silver Lake mines were put into operation. From 1916 to 1935, the state's annual output of talc was in the range of 9,000 to 20,000 tons. In the mid-1930s, the use of talc in wall tile grew rapidly. In California, the production of talc grew to 63,000 stpy in 1943. The post-war building boom helped California production to grow to 120,000 tons in 1951. In 1968, production was 165,000 tons, 1969 was 145,000 tons, 1970 was 185,000 tons, and 1972 was 155,000 tons. Talc mining in New York state dates to about 1878 when a Colonel Palmer and associates opened the first commercial talc mine on the Nelson Freeman farm near Talcville, New York. In 1893, this operation was sold to the International Pulp Co. which changed its name to the International Talc Co. in 1944. The company was acquired by R.T. Vanderbilt Co., Inc. in 1974. A new talc operation, the Gouverneur Talc Co. owned by the R.T. Vanderbilt Co., began operations near Balmat, NY, in 1948. The initial capacity of the processing plant was 200 stpd (Gillingham, 1950). Subsequent expansions have increased capacity to over 600 stpd. The Vermont talc industry began just after the start of the 20th century. Talc was discovered in the area of the present Johnson, VT, talc mine in 1902. The American Minerals Co. initiated plant operations at Johnson in 1904. The Magnesia Talc Co. opened a plant at Waterbury, VT, in 1913 (Burmeister, 1963; Trauffer, 1964) and acquired American Minerals Co. in 1923. The Waterbury mine has a long history as a producer of talc crayons. The Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. was formed in 1924 by a merger of the Eastern Talc, Co.

Do not write until you have something to say. Think first; then write. In order to be understood, you must know what you wish to say. Clear writing is the consequence of clear thinking. Therefore consider your subject well before you begin to write; ruminate on it; marshal the salient facts in your mind; saturate yourself with the ideas you wish to express and with cognate ideas; then express yourself deliberately. If you are bubbling over with your subject the words will come, but you might as well expect to sail without a breeze as hope to give life to words without the living thought. Here I may advert to the fact that among the uneducated it is a common expectation to acquire the knack of writing without taking the trouble to study the art of literature. I overheard a woman in a suburban train remark to her neighbor: "I'd like to be able to write well without stopping to think about it". She was one of many that would like to do a thing well without the trouble of thinking; but it cannot be done in respect of anything to which thought is essential. The possession of a good voice does not justify a person in expecting to sing successfully to a large audience; before singing in public one has to master the technique of singing; one has to learn first how to breathe properly, how to enunciate, and many other things. The successful singer is an artist, not a megaphone. Most of us would regard a man or a woman without any training in the art of singing as a fool or an impostor if he or she were to give a public concert, yet we do not recognize the equal foolishness and imposture of persons that write books before they have studied the technique of writing. A typical example of a piston containing a ferronickel insert is shown in Fig. 1. The high coefficient of expansion of silver made it worthy of consideration, while the small size of the insert would render its use feasible in Germany as an emergency measure. The coefficients of linear expansion of several metals and ailoys are as shown in the table above. Obviously the melting point of the insert must be high enough to prevent it from melting when the light alloy is cast around it. This imposes a lower limit of about 850" C. for the solidus of the silver alloy. Pure silver melts at about 961" C., so that the tolerable depression in the solidus is rather small. To avoid deformation of the insert during use a Brinell hardness number of at least 60 appears necessary.

A new electrical logging method called Laterolog is described which provides for better recording of formation resistivity. In this method a current, preferably of constant intensity, is forced into the formation perpendicularly to the wall of the hole as a sheet of predetermined thickness by means of a special electrode arrangement and of an autonlatic control system. The essential advantages of the Laterolog over the regular resistivity logs are explained. With the Laterolog, the mud column has much less influence than with conventional methods. The Laterolog is, therefore. particularly useful in wells drilled with highly conductive mud. Moreover. when the electrode system is located opposite a bed of moderate or small thickness, the disturbing effect of the adjacent formations becomes practically eliminated, provided the bed is thicker than the sheet of current. which itself is usually a few inches to a few feet thick. The sequences of beds are. therefore, much more sharply differentiated, and, in many cases, it is possible to read directly from the logs values close to the true resistivities of the formations without further corrections. Field examples are shown to illustrate the results of the method in various types of formations. INTRODUCTION As soon as it was introduced into the petroleum industry, electrical logging roved to be a powerful instrument for the delineation of the strata traversed by bore holes and for correlation of such strata." Research and engineering efforts were mostly devoted at this early time to the design of the techniqurs which could provide the best data for these purpoes. Later, attention was directed toward the quantitative analy5i.s of electrical logs, in order to obtain information on. reservoir characteristics, and, in particular, on oil and water saturation.3,4 Efforts have been made, accordingly, with a view to improving the already existing methods, or to finding new methods which could satisfy these new requirements." Quantitative analysis implies a determination as accurate as possible of the true resistivity of the formations. In fact, however; the "apparent resistivity" recorded in front of a given bed by a conventional electrical logging method is frequently quite different from the true resistivity of this bed. This is due to the combined influence of the mud column, of the adjacent formations both above and below the bed, and of the invaded zone, in which the original fluid has been more or less replaced by mud filtrate. When the beds are thick enough, and, as is frequently the case in sand and shale formations, when their resistivity is not much greater than that of the mud, it is generally possible to obtain their true resistivity directly on the electric log, or at least to obtain an approximate value which can be corrected without undue difficulty by means of recently published charts known as "departure curves."" When the beds are thin, and particularly when, in addition. their resistivity is substantially greater than that of the mud column, the apparent resistivities recorded on conventional logs are seriously affected, and it is generally very difficult, if at all possible, to estimate their true resistivity with a good enough accuracy. In the most severe cases, such as are encountered in holes drilled through hard formations with muds of high salinity, the conventional logs are so distorted and rounded that they do not even show clearly the houndaries of the different beds. In order to overcome the effect of the mud column and of the adjacent formations, it is possible to make use of appro. priate systems whereby the measurements involve a comp3ratjvelv thin slice of space at the level of the measuring device. Inflation, tight money and keen competition spur companies to consider advanced material handling systems capable of reducing cost per ton of moving ore, waste or men and supplies. Since transportation charges account for an average of about 25% of the total delivered price of a product, then this cost center may actually determine the economic value of a new deposit. This being so, it is interesting to note that of the 1.4 billion tons of revenue freight carried by all Class I carriers of the nation in 1967, over 247 million tons or 17.5% were industrial minerals or products dependent on industrial minerals, i.e., glass, gypsum board, brick, etc. Because most bulk commodities have a comparatively low market value and are usually classified for lower than normal freight rates, railroads rely on large volumes and better equipment utilization to effect an equitable return. It is for this reason that the unit and shuttle train concept came into being. The average rate per ton-mile of all materials hauled by rail in 1968 was 1.31 cents. The low rates existing for industrial minerals contributed to this low average as did unit and shuttle train rates.

THE development of the modern blast furnace began more than one hundred years ago, with the abandonment of the small hillside furnaces. Its development, especially during the past 50 years, has been accomplished through a rapid succession of enlargements and improvements. The remarkable growth in furnace output during this period is a tribute to the engineers and operators who have constantly endeavored to build larger and more efficient blast furnaces. The blast-furnace operators and their mechanical and electrical maintenance staffs have originated most of the furnace improvements as a result of their practical operating experience. FURNACE LINES About 50 years ago furnaces consisted of hearths about 11 ft. in diameter, which merged into rather high flat boshes, with no cylindrical section between the bosh and inwall and no cylindrical section at the stock line. Since then the lines of the furnace invariably have included a cylindrical section above the bosh and a cylindrical section at the stock line. Notable increases have been made in both hearth diameters and furnace heights. During the past 10 years hearth diameters in new and replaced furnace stacks have rather consistently fallen within the range of 25 to 28 ft. while their heights have varied between 100 and 106 ft. The lines of most large furnaces using Mesabi ores have followed a fairly uniform pattern (Fig. I) in which the principal dimensions for 25-ft. hearth furnaces are as follows: [Hearth diameter 25 ft. o in. Height of bosh 10 ft. o in. Bosh angle 8 1 ½° Diameter top of bosh 28 ft. o in. Inwall batter per foot 15/16 Stock-line diameter 19 ft. 6 in. Large-bell diameter 14 ft. 6 in. Height from iron notch to top ring casting 100 ft. o in.] In determining the size of a new furnace for the replacement of an existing stack or for an addition to productive capacity, it is not possible to formulate a procedure that can always be followed. Local conditions, requirements as to capacity, available raw materials and prospects for future expansion dictate the size of such proposed improvements or additions. However, where the immediate requirements indicate a stack or furnace of a certain productive capacity, and the future prospects indicate that more capacity can be utilized, it is well to consider building the furnace for the ultimate capacity rather than to install a smaller hearth with provision for future enlargement. The decision to build the larger hearth and stack for the ultimate capacity probably will require no greater initial investment, since the saving in the cost of brickwork will about offset the greater cost of the hearth jacket, tuyere breast and bosh bands. In the meantime, the furnace of larger hearth dimensions, while operating below its ultimate output, will yield a better coke rate and

INTRODUCTION The first installation of large, commercial, high gradient-high field cannister and matrix magnetic separators for removal of impurities from kaolin was made in 1973 (1). Since then the technology and equipment have been widely adopted for clay processing with about 12 units in commercial use. These new separators have filled a need, caught the imagination of many and become a technology worth fighting for. A fight has occurred, and a resolution on royalties for kaolin processing, at least, has been achieved. LIMITATIONS TO APPLICATIONS OF MAGNETIC SEPARATORS Other than the use of these magnets on kaolin clay, no other application has yet achieved widespread adoption. Dr. Iannicelli blames inertia, and1 would agree that it is a factor. There are other reasons too, and if they are examined, they may isolate problems that R&D can significantly assist in solving. I'd like to break the problems into two areas. Machine limitations - the mineral properties are there but performance is insufficient or uneconomic. Separation limitations - the mineral properties aren’t there, but the magnetic separation would perform well if the properties were there (size is right; concentration is right, etc).

AIR conditioning, or air cooling, for the improvement of ventilation in the Butte mines has come into increasing use during the past 10 years. In part, the methods practiced have been described in previous publications of the Institute, but some improvements on earlier methods have been made and a number of new features have been developed. This paper is presented as a record of progress made, and for the sake of completeness describes all general features of the work. The need for air conditioning in the ventilation of mines in the district arises from the fact that the temperature of the ground and mine water has shown a very great increase with increase in mining depth, and has now reached a maximum of slightly over 130°F. The most difficult part of the ventilation problem is the maintenance of temperature and humidity of a satisfactory standard in the working places, especially on the lower levels. Although ordinary ventilation is adequate to maintain good conditions in most of the working places it is subject to a number of limitations at great depth. Most important among these limitations is that with increase in depth the air becomes heated before it reaches the working places, both by compression from increase in atmospheric Pressure and by heat transferred to it from rock at high temPerature, so that its capacity for lowering temperatures is greatly reduced before it reaches the operating zone. Increasing depth of mining also increases the distance traveled by the air in its passage through the mine, and this causes a corresponding increase in resistance to air flow, so that there is greater difficulty in maintaining even the same volume in circulation. Thus, in the face of a demand that the ventilating system have a very much greater capacity to remove heat from the mine, the tendency is for that capacity to diminish. The only evident alternatives were (I) the opening of additional air shafts to increase the volume of air in circulation, (2) an extension of the existing system that would be subject to the same limitations, or (3) the adoption of an entirely different method such as air cooling. Fortunately for an economic solution of the problem, the mean annual temperature of the surface atmosphere at Butte is about 40°F., with very low relative humidity in summer, so that there is unlimited natural cooling power at a temperature range adaptable to air-conditioning methods. Methods Two similar methods of air conditioning are used, as necessitated by service requirements and dependent upon the equipment available. In one, which is the more important and has the greater cooling capacity, water is circulated in a closed circuit, and, alternately, first absorbs heat from warm mine air and then dissipates it in the surface atmosphere by cooling at a cooling tower.
