On Nov. 11, 1909, M. Alexandre Pourcel, of Paris, France, upon the proposal of a large number of distinguished members, and the unanimous recommendation of the Council, was elected by the Board of Directors an Honorary Member of the Institute. M. Pourcel has devoted forty-three years to the metallurgy of iron and steel ; and the work which he did between thirty and forty years ago constitutes an important part of the founda¬tion of the practice of to-day. Among his striking contribu¬tions are : (1) his perfection, in 1869, of the manufacture of high-grade ferro-manganese in a carbon-lined open-hearth furnace, instead of the costly crucibles previously used; (2) his discovery, in 1874, of the method of making solid steel cast¬ings; (3) his manufacture, in 1875, of ferro-manganese and silico-spiegel in the blast-furnace; and (4) his anticipation, in 1875, of modern American blast-furnace practice, by the pro¬duction, in a very small furnace, of Bessemer pig containing 2.5 per cent. of silicon, from a burden yielding only 46 per cent. of iron, and with a consumption, per ton of pig, of only 1,8401b. of coke, containing 15 per cent. of ash. These brilliant pioneer achievements, together with his contributions to cur¬rent technical literature, won for him the Bessemer gold medal of the Iron and Steel Institute ; the great" medal of honor," which is the highest award of the French Society of Mineral Industry, and other gold medals, as well as the distinction of honorary membership of the Comité des Forges de France, which was conferred upon him in 1891. Pourcel has been instrumental, as consulting engineer of the Société de Commentry-Fourchambault, at Decazeville, France, in an extraordinary development of the manufacture of special steels. Emphasis on publications related to coal mining subsidence and damages is appropriate at present in view of the energy crisis and increased coal production and public alertness. I have worked in Harrisburg with the state government Public Utilities Commission on energy-fuel matters and issues (Parate, 1978-80). I have participated in the communication on subsidence/ damage reviews and status with the Bureau of Mines Liasion Office (Kebblish, 1978-79). I have done research (Parate, 1965) and published papers (Parate, 1972; Parate, 1967) in Britain on coal mining subsidence and damages around Sheffield-Nottinghamshire coal fields. I have a few comments on the recent paper titled, "Pennsylvania Subsidence Control Guidelines," by C.J. Bise. 1) What is the basis of the empirical formula or guideline, LD _ (0.27 x D) ± 4.6, defining the support area? 2) The particular structure may not be damaged due to vertical uniform displacement caused by mining beneath unless the displacement is differential (King, 1964). 3) The author mentions the limited subsidence research in the US, and quite rightly so. But he fails to quote any work reference by continental investigators except the British or review work by the US. What are the reasons? 4) The author has not mentioned the importance and role of angle of draw for Pennsylvania, Kentucky, or Illinois coal fields. Is there any current research investigation on the relationship between subsidence research investigation, damage, and transference of strains to structures? There have been a number of newspaper reports on subsidence damage in Wilkesbarre and other areas in Pennsylvania. Is the author aware of such instances and traditional attitudes to such issues? Many times government agencies--due to lack of funds, technical expertise, and public policies--are unable or do not find it interesting to keep updates on these issues, as per the author's knowledge and experience with state governments. 5) What is the net effect and role of the D.E.R. Insurance Office on the monitoring, reducing, or controlling subsidence damage, particularly in Pennsylvania?

THE purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the importance and the usefulness of phase measurements in electrical prospecting for ore, a subject about which virtually nothing has been published. The paper describes a new field method for ore prospecting, the "Turam" method, which makes use of phase measurements, and which has been used with great success for five years. Of the principal geophysical prospecting methods, the gravimetric and magnetic methods determine the direction and strength of the static fields of force of the earth. By seismic and electrical methods, fields of force are applied to the block of ground under investigation. By these methods a third parameter can be measured, besides the direction and strength of the field; namely, the time of arrival of the applied field at the different observation points. This time of arrival has been practically the only parameter measured in seismic work, while in electrical pros-pecting it has generally not been considered, the measurements having been limited to determination of direction and strength of the applied field.

In a device known as the electron-beam microprobe, the mining industry has lately acquired a sophisticated new analytical tool that can dig out answers to a broad range of questions spanning all phases of mining activity. Essentially, the microprobe is a specialized X-ray fluorescence unit that makes it possible to obtain chemical analytical data for volumes as small as 1 cup. With this capability, it can be used both for determining the composition of small inclusions in rocks or metallic products and for monitoring changes in composition that proceed from a reacting surface. At the Research Center of Kennecott's Metal Mining Division, this versatile probe has successfully solved problems in mineral operations ranging from exploration through refining. A few instances of how the probe has been applied at the Center are presented here. At a special inaugural ceremony in Blue Hill, Maine on August 3rd, Governor John H. Reed detonated the first blast to signify the beginning of development work on a new copper-zinc mining venture that seems destined to focus increased interest in the mineral potential of that State. The property which is the first new base metal mine to be discovered in the northern Appalachians in 30 years, is owned by Black Hawk Mining Co., a subsidiary of Denison Mines Ltd. of Toronto. When it goes on-stream in 1966, it will join Ducktown, Tenn., as the only active copper producing region, east of the Mississippi River. According to official reports submitted by the Company to Robert G. Doyle, Maine's State Geologist, Black Hawk has found ore reserves totalling 4.5 million tons. Assays show 2.8 million tons of 2.0'; copper and 0.4 oz. of silver per ton; 1.2 million tons of 16.75% zinc and 0.58% copper; and 0.5 million tons of 6.75% lead with 4.25 oz. of silver per toil and some zinc.

There are some simple theoretical approaches to pillar design but they leave much to be desired. There are also more complex theoretical approaches, but at this time the most realistic approach is to go into the mines and observe and measure how real pillars are performing under real conditions; to allow the information thus gathered to ferment in our minds - then to project the behaviour of those pillars into our new designs and mining techniques, probably with no formulas at all. Examples, from half-a-dozen different mines, show how a simple- minded approach, through observation and measurement, led to changes in pillar design which often contradicted the textbook but made very significant contributions to mining safety, efficiency and costs. The good news is that we know a lot more about pillar design than we realize. We have, between us, looked at millions of pillars of all kinds, under all conditions, but we have overlooked what they are trying to tell us. We can take problem situations and turn them into opportunities and, in that way, become better stewards of the resources which have been given to us.

In 1943, Illinois produced 82,256,000 bbl. of oil, or 5.5 per cent of the total for the United States, and ranked sixth in the nation in oil production. This represents a decline of 23 per cent from 1942, when the total Illinois production was 106,ggo,o~~ bbl. and Illinois ranked fifth. The daily average production for 1943 was approximately 225,000 bbl. When a binary alloy is oxidized to form simultaneously an internal oxidation zone and an external scale which grows at a constant rate, the oxidation should reach a condition of steady shale, in which the internal oxidation zone is maintained at a time-independent thickness. Assuming an ideal model for the steady-state oxidation, the diffusion equation is solved for the steudy-state concentration profiles for oxygen and alloying- element in the metal. A theoretical prediction of' the steady-state thickness of the internal oxidation zone is made in terms of the experimental parameters. FOR the oxidation of binary alloys, Rhines, Johnson, and Anderson,1 as well as Mask: have derived equations describing the kinetics for the simultaneous formation of an internal oxidation zone and an external scale which was assumed to mow according to a parabolic rate law. Experimental determinations of internal oxidation zone thicknesses beneath a Cu2O scale for Cu-Be and Cu-A1 alloys3,4 have shown some deviation from Maak's theoretical expressions, because the ideal model assumed for the calculation is not met experimentally. Some pure metals, such as columbium and tantalum oxidize at elevated temperatures and high oxygen pressures to form nonprotec-tive external scales which thicken at a constant rate. If such a base metal is alloyed with a solute element which may form a more stable oxide than the solvent oxide, then internal oxidation of solute may occur beneath the growing external scale. A review of the internal oxidation of alloys has been published recently.5 The purpose of this paper is to analyze theoretically for a binary alloy the kinetics for the simultaneous formation of an internal oxidation zone and an external scale which grows at a constant rate. Consider an alloy A-B in which A is the more-noble solvent and B is the less-noble solute. The solute oxide is assumed to precipitate in internal oxidation as stoichiometric particles of BO, which are assumed to have a negligible solubility product in the A matrix. It is further assumed that the diffusion of oxygen through the zone of internal oxidation is not impeded by previously precipitated BO, particles. The specimen is assumed to be sufficiently thick so that the solute content in the center of the specimen does not change. For consistency: the following notation of Maak2 has been used:

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) INTRODUCTION CRUDE oil attracted attention because of its excellence as a fuel for open-hearth furnaces; for making crucible steel and brass; for melting copper, lead, tin, zinc, nickel, silver, malleable iron, gray iron; and for the production of steam in all sizes and types of boilers. For heating furnaces, mold-drying ovens, core ovens, ore roasters, calciners, hot-air furnaces, sand drying, asphalt road work, etc., its superiority over other fuels is due to the fact that the heat is at all times under perfect control, so that a constant temperature may be attained and maintained at the will of the operator. This means a maximum amount and uniform quality of work. Crude oil is of two kinds, paraffine base and asphaltum base, and varies from 11 to 46 gravity Baumé. The light-gravity oil does not require heating before use; but oil of less than 20 gravity Baumé should be heated to just below its vaporizing point, in order to reduce its viscosity and to obtain the highest efficiency of combustion. Heavy California oil vaporizes at 230°'F., Mexican crude oil at from 175° to 210° F., and Beaumont, Texas, oil at 142° F. Fuel oil vaporizes at 130° F.

In a study of the structure and properties of tungsten wire used for lamp filaments, it became desirable to perform transmission electron microscopy on the wire in the annealed as well as in the drawn condition. Wire used for lamp filaments is generally drawn to diameters less than 0.010 in. which is too fine for the preparation of transmission samples from single wires. Thus, it is clear that some assembly of wires must be used to form a "wire sheet" similar to that used by Glenn and Duff.' Also, because recrystallized tungsten wire is brittle at room temperature, the "wire sheetJ' must be rigidly contained during any subsequent grinding and polishing operation. With these conditions in mind, a technique was devised for thinning tungsten wire of 0.001 to 0.010 in. diam for transmission electron microscopv. Sample Preparation. An open tube vapor phase epitaxial growth system has been used for large area (multiple substrate) growth of GaAs1-xPx on GaAs substrates. The GaCl-GaCl transport reaction is used with either a GaAs or Ga (nonsaturated) source. Selenium and tellurium have been used for donor impurities, and zinc as an acceptor. The useable substrate area in this system is approximately 20 sq cm. The uniformity of thick-ness of the epitaxial layers are typically better than ±5 pct across a given wafer. Electrical and optical measurerments indicute comparable uniformity in electrical and luminescent properties within a wufer. The application of this system to the large scale pro-duction of GaAs1-x Px for display devices, both discrete and arrays, is discussed. Typical electrical and luminescent properties of light emitting diodes fabricated front material produced by this technique are presented. THE most promising materials currently being utilized for visible injection electroluminescence are GaAs1-xPx, Ga1-xAlxAs, and Gap. All have reasonably efficient emissions in the red portion of the visible spectrum at room temperature; Gap also has an efficient green emission.' At present, GaAs1-xPx has a technological advantage over Ga1-xAlxAs and Gap for display applications, since relatively large (several sq cm) areas of GaAs1-xPx suitable for use in electroluminescent devices may be readily grown by vapor phase growth techniques. In contrast, the preparation of Gap and Ga1-xAlxAs for electroluminescent device applications generally employs solution growth techniques which are at present not well suited for the growth of large areas of uniform thickness and doping level. The capability of uniform growth over large substrate areas and the use of multiple substrates is necessary for the practical utilization of electroluminescent devices. This is particularly important when quantity production or monolithic devices are required. Furthermore, in many display applications arrays of light emitting devices are used, the individual elements of which are of a size resolvable by the unaided eye. Thus the overall dimensions of display are substantially larger than those of most semiconductor devices. It is also necessary to achieve a high degree of control over the growth parameters to attain the required degree of reproducibility of materials properties for electroluminescent devices. In the case of GaAs1-xPx it is necessary to accurately and precisely control the phosphorus content of the alloy, both on a macroscopic and microscopic scale, in addition to the parameters generally associated with epitaxial growth such as thickness and doping level. This value is critical, as it has a major effect on the performance of electroluminescent devices. This paper describes the epitaxial growth of GaAsl-xPx suitable for electroluminescent display devices using a system developed specifically for this purpose, and which contains several novel features. The results of studies of selected physical properties of the epitaxial layers are also discussed. Finally, a brief summary is given of the characteristics of display devices fabricated from GaAsl-xPx grown in this system. EXPERIMENTAL A) Reactants. A number of techniques suitable for the vapor phase epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx have been reported in the literature.'-' The method selected for this investigation is that in which the Ga is transported by the GaC1-GaCI3 reaction in an open tube process. The results reported here were obtained using either the combination of GaAs, AsC13, and pH3, or Ga, AsH3, pH3, and HC1 as the initial re-actants.* The ASH3 and pH3 were obtained as dilute *Several different sources of supply were used for these reactants, y~elding comparable results._____________________________________________________ mixtures in HZ; the HC1 was obtained from the reduction of AsC13 by Hz at elevated temperatures. Both selenium and tellurium were employed as donor impurities, and zinc as an acceptor impurity. Selenium was introduced in the form of H2Se, tellurium in the form of tellurium-doped GaAs, and zinc in the form of diethy1 zinc. B) Apparatus. The prinicipal difference between the apparatus used in the present study and that of Tietjen and Amick,8 in addition to size and other related design features, is that RE induction heating is utilized in place of resistance heated furnaces. Induction heating was selected for this application because it appears to have several advantages, including: 1) It is possible to keep all fused silica portions of the apparatus at temperatures well below those of the reaction zone, thus minimizing a possible source of contamination. 2) The thermal mass of an induction heated system can be made small, thus reducing the total time required for the growth process. 3) Sharp temperature profiles (desirable for high deposition efficiency) are easily achieved. 4) The volume of the system for a given substrate area can generally be made smaller than a comparable resistance heated unit. THE sound made by ball, pebble and rod mills has long been used by the operator as the "telltale" of their operation. The nature of this sound depends upon local conditions and the type of mill used. By experience an operator can tell whether the mill is running properly or not. Some operators are able to detect the difference in sound much better than others and get better results running the same mill tinder the same conditions. The automatic operation of a mill using sound as the fundamental means for maintaining control presents many problems.
