INTERNAL The year 1976 was another outstanding year in the operation of the Institute and in the success of its varied activities. Total AIME membership reached 59,773 for a gain of. 6.4 percent. Total revenue increased to $5,111,2 10, up 22.4 percent, and balance sheet assets increased to $8,479,612, up 12.2 percent from the previous year. AIME and its constituent units conducted 30 technical meetings during the year, and attendance was up at most of them. Publications issued by the Constituent Societies continued a healthy growth. During the year 9 new local Sections were established, and at the end of the year the Institute had 150 Sections, with 19 of them overseas. Details on all of these operations are on pages 2 and 3 of this report.

Energy conservation has been the keyword in many plant expansions. Far many years, most of the phosphate industry has been dry grinding their phosphate rock. Agrico Chemical in Florida has recently been evaluating the wet grinding of phosphate rock, a process which eliminates a pre-dry stage for mill feed while allowing higher through- puts. This same company also plans to open a new phosphate facility in Louisiana that will use wet grinding in both ball mills. The Eveleth Expansion Co.'s Fairlane concentrator will have the largest rod and ball mills in the US mining industry. The plant will consist of three lines, each with one rod mill and one ball mill, and will process 464 ltph. The rod mills will be 15 x 20% ft, drawing 2035 hp. The ball mills will be 17 x 41½ ft, drawing 6900 hp and driven by dual 3000- hp motors. The plant is scheduled for startup in the fall of 1976.

THE magnetic powder method, long used for roughly mapping mag-netic fields, has recently been refined 1,2 for investigating the microscopic variations in the surface magnetization of ferromagnetic crystals. Bitter2 first discovered regular powder patterns connected with the crystal structure of such specimens. Several other investigators3 have used Bitter's original technique, with slight modifications, to study the varia-tion of the patterns with variations in the magnetizing field applied parallel to the surface, and their dependence upon the state of strain, of polish and of crystal cut. All of the explanations-of these patterns on metallic ferromagnetics have been couched in general terms. In a preliminary report we have described an improvement in the powder technique which led us to the discovery of a new effect throwing con-siderable light on the magnetic secondary structure of alpha iron4 and of nickel5 single crystals. We now report additional evidence confirming the existence and stability of a magnetic block secondary structure.

Some twenty years ago the author of a book,* by which, for the first time, molecular action was made to account for nearly all phenomena in hydrodynamics, began his preface as follows: " It is contrary to all experience, that any branch of science should suddenly cut short its own line of reasoning, and drop all connection with its past, and yet as quickly re-establish itself on an entirely new basis. It is, therefore, not without justification that this book should be met with caution and even distrust." When the newly-discovered natural facts and laws presented in this paper were, in 1891, first laid before the officers of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, they might have been preceded by a preface to the same effect; and the expression would have found its justification by the actual experience these facts and laws met with. Criteria for deciding when rock should be ripped and what ripping equipment and techniques should be used in given situations are discussed in this article. The relation between ripper performance and seismic wave velocities in various types of rock is also discussed. The ripper is not a new tool. In fact, it dates back as far as the Roman Empire. The Roman's ripper-mounted on wheels and shaped something like a plow — was pulled by oxen and used to loosen the earth for the shovelers and basket carriers building the Appian Way. There are records of rippers being used in this country in railroad construction between 1860 and 1880. However, the ripper as we know it today did not appear until about 1930. Tractor-drawn models were in use in 1931 on the Hoover Dam project. At that time they weighed about 7500 lb and were pulled by tractors with about 75 flywheel hp and up to 30,000 Ib total weight. We did install one 100% brick bottom in our #33 furnace which is basically the same design as Inland's furnace. We had previously embarked on a program of replacing all bottoms in our 300 ton furnaces every 2nd campaign which would be about every 2000 - 2300 heats. This had been necessitated by the effect of our rather high oxygen blowing rates and our desire to maintain a minimum bottom interval level. This meant that we were able to compare bottom performance of various types of materials on a realistic bas is. Since furnace availability is critical to our operation, we are organized to employ every piece of equipment and all the necessary man power to complete a rebuild in the shortest possible time. A 300 ton furnace requires 7.5 days to rebuild. If a new bottom is to be installed an additional 2.5 days is added - 24 hours for tear out and 36 hours for bricklaying - making a total of 10 days.

(written discussion?).-On page 2680, under the heading Junction Box and Zone Box, the authors say, with reference to the zone-box principle of connections between primary couple, compensator couple, and copper leads, which method in its appli-cation to a single couple is shown in Fig. 34, that if this principle is adopted for a multiple installation, so as to save compensating leads; a selective switch may be (and the inference is that it must be) inserted between the zone box and the different couples, putting the switch at an inconvenient point, or putting up with some complicated interlacing of connections.. Wilson-Maeulen Co. has employed the zone-box method extensively for several years and in none of the many multiple installa-tions has either of those alternatives been resorted to. Instead there has been used a method of wiring with the switch at the indicator and involv-ing no more complications than the junction-box method shown III

On account of the tremendous increase in the production of steel there has been much speculation as to the reserves of iron ore. A number of estimates of world scope have been published, which show that these reserves are definitely limited if a long range view is taken. There are, however, optimists who believe that in perhaps two generations the metallurgy of iron will have advanced to the point where any kind of iron mineral combination of perhaps 20 pct iron will be usable. This thinking has been particularly applied to the new taconite developments of the Mesabi Range, for here is an iron formation of such vast extent that its iron could almost last forever. Let us briefly examine this most favorable of all low grade ore reserves in North America. Nothing will be said about the 1,000 million long tons of material now classified as ore, for they will be largely gone in less than 20 years.

The rapid development of the southern coal and iron-ore fields during the past few years, and especially in the latter half of the year 1886, and the avidity with which everything relating to the industrial situation there is read and absorbed by the professional and non-professional public, has led to the preparation of a brief paper for the Institute upon a comparison of the raw materials available on or about January 1st, 1887, at three prominent centers of consumption. The discovery of the gold deposits of the Jerritt Canyon district, with proven recoverable reserves in excess of 67.6 Mg (2.4 million oz) of gold, has contributed greatly to the tremendous resurgence in exploration for disseminated gold deposits in Nevada and throughout the west. The Jerritt Canyon project, including the Bell mine, is a 70130 joint venture between Freeport Gold Co. and FMC Gold Corp., both of which are wholly owned affiliates of the respective parent companies, Freeport-McMoRan Inc. and FMC Corp. The Jerritt Canyon district is located in the center of the Independence Mountains in north-central Elko County, Nevada, approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of the Carlin gold mine and 68 km (42 miles) north of Elko. Although the discovery of a commercial gold mine at Jerritt resulted from Freeport's exploration activities, the initial identification of a gold prospect in this area was a consequence of a program by FMC in the search for antimony. Their program was, in part, based on data in the Nevada Bureau of Mines Bulletin 61, "Antimony Deposits in Nevada." Work on the property began in 197 1 with geologic mapping followed by sampling and geochemical analyses. FMC geologists, including Robert Hawkins, Russell Hayden, and Hal Hurst recognized the striking similarity of the area to the geologic environment of Newmont's nearby Carlin gold deposit and soon focused on the gold potential. Increases in the price of gold served to stimulate interest and support for the exploration program. Geochemical samples were collected and analyzed for gold and trace elements usually associated with gold. A strong gold anomaly was found on the North Fork of Jerritt Canyon, which was called the Alchem anomaly. Drill-testing of this anomaly in 1973 revealed significant grades and thicknesses of gold mineralization in the lower portion of the Roberts Mountain formation. This initial discovery and subsequent close-spaced drilling proved the existence of several small pods of low-grade, gold-bearing material which cropped out at their up-dip edges, causing the surface anomaly. The mineralization was very encouraging, but was not, by itself, of economic importance from the standpoint of either grade or tonnage. Freeport Exploration Co. established a district office in Reno in late 1974 with responsibilities for exploration of hard minerals in the Basin and Range Province. Emphasis of the program was directed to the discovery of precious metal deposits. Enfield Bell, as District Manager for this new office, was particularly interested in the Independence Mountains and when the opportunity for a joint venture with FMC became available in 1976, it was aggressively pursued. Enfield Bell and David Stevens evaluated the FMC data and with the support of management formulated a bid in competition with 23 other companies. Freeport was selected by FMC as partner and a joint venture agreement was successfully negotiated. In mid-summer of 1976, Freeport Exploration Co. began an expanded program of detailed mapping and geochemical sampling under the direction of Bell and Stevens that led to new interpretations of the structural and alteration patterns. Hawkins' contribution during this period must be recognized since he not only was one of the original geologists assigned to the antimony and subsequently the gold investigations, but shortly after the start of the joint venture exploration, he was hired by Freeport Exploration Co. as the project geologist for the venture. Hawkins had studied the central Independence Mountains for his thesis and his understanding of the regional geology provided an excellent background for the continued exploration of the gold de- posits. His interpretation of the structure in the vicinity of the Alchem anomaly was of significant help in the Freeport exploration program. Drilling, based on this new under- standing of the geology, revealed the edge of the Marlboro Canyon ore body, which is now being exploited in the Bell mine. The Present report represents the conclusions drawn from the investigations and deliberations undertaken since it was first organized. These studies have shown that the evolution of geophysics has proceeded along lines that differed from those marking the advance of classical geology. The latter science developed as a descriptive one, dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena, and the elementary, rational explanations that could be offered therefor. The fact that these phenomena were also chemical and physical in nature was seldom given more than passing acknowledgment. During the last half century, however, a new approach to problems of terrestrial phenomena has become of greater significance. This new attack has come through the sciences of physics and chemistry, as the people trained therein have investigated the facts of the earth as problems in their respective sciences. This development has been chiefly at the hands of European investigators, and European universities have long recognized it by establishing departments or institutions of geophysics. In the universities of North America, their arbitrary departmentalization into fields of physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, etc., has prevented the academic recognition of such domains of science as geophysics and geochemistry. In consequence, the development of these subjects in the United States has been largely at the hands of nonacademic institutions, while the universities themselves are evidently in a state of confusion as to how the subject should be handled. In some places an attempt to teach geophysics is made in the physics department, in others in the geology department, in some in the engineering school, and occasionally as a cooperative effort; a Department of Geophysics is seldom found in North America. In some instances, proper academic plan. ning has been precluded by interdepart. mental jealousies, or by lack of appreciation of the significance of the subject. DEMANDS upon power plants by the war program in 1941 intensified problems of coal utilization. It was an outstanding year in that field. The domestic heating stove witnessed outstanding development; the research folks progressing so rapidly that the design of the "perfect" stove is just around the corner. Use of colored motion pictures in analyzing fuel-bed performances has reached a new high with the colored pictures taken at minute intervals and projected at sixteen frames a second as shown by the Koppers Coal Co. and the Anthracite Institute (on domestic stokers) and the Consolidated Edison Co. (industrial stokers). Continued efforts of this kind will be beneficial in analyzing further some of the "Code for Testing Coal" problems confronting Subcommittee No. 2 of the Joint A. I. M. E. - A. S. M. E. Committees.

THE CHAIRMAN of the fast growing Petroleum Division is not only a graduate of the University of California, but a third generation native son. After a few years spent in hard-rock geology, his professional efforts were transferred to the sedimentaries and to petroleum investigations, as a consulting geologist. For ten years these investigations covered the Rocky Mountain, Oklahoma, Texas, and eastern districts. After the war he returned to Casper, Wyo., as chief geologist for the Consolidated Royalty Oil and Western Exploration Companies. This employment afforded him the opportunity to study particularly the economic relationship between the lessor-lessee interests in development and production, a somewhat unusual type of petroleum specialization.

IT IS becoming increasingly evident to management that it has other obligations than merely to earn dividends for stockholders. The head of one of America's largest organizations has stated it in these words: "There rests upon them a far broader responsibility than the mere production of goods and services, or solely the interests of their stockholders. They must assume the important obligation, through proper policy, of attuning industry to a rapidly changing world, from social as well as economic standpoints." Stockholders might as well reconcile themselves, therefore, to the fact that management cannot always put their interests first in the obligation of business enterprise: and that the legitimate requirements of customers and employees have acquired a new significance which must be recognized if the business of today is to prosper.

BATTELLE Memorial Institute is an endowed in stitution for scientific research in metallurgy, fuels, and allied fields, established by the will of Gordon Battelle, 2nd, as a memorial to his father, Colonel John Gordon Battelle. Before I tell you more of what Battelle Memorial Institute is, I want to go back a bit and tell you why it is. Colonel Battelle began his services in the iron and steel industry in Wheeling in 1866 and in 1883 came to Ohio, where he successively engaged in the iron and steel industry in Cincinnati, Piqua and Columbus. The family had been prominent in Ohio affairs since 1788, when Gordon Battelle's great-great-grandfather came from New England to settle in Marietta. He was one of the pioneers and a member of the famous "Ohio Company."
